- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Vietnamese podcast today.
- 0:01[SPEAKER_01]: I have a little pepper.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: I've been wanting to get this moment for a long time, for a long, long time.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for coming on, man.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_01]: Dude, thank you for having me, bro.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be here.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a beautiful park.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_01]: You know, before we start, I want to really shout out to Alex Jung.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_01]: We lost him a few days ago.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I, I, I,
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: know that you are in the same community as Alex and you've kept in touch with him all these years and me too, and just wanted to hear just a little tribute before we get started.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, man, I think Alex years ago, there's not many Vietnamese comedians in the scene, so we all kind of know each other, but it's okay.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_03]: Last week, he asked my family made funtette,
- 0:43[SPEAKER_03]: And he's like, brother, I gotta try his own.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_03]: So my parents nailed him, some pentac.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_03]: No, like a week ago, or a week or two weeks ago.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_03]: And then he, like, sent me a picture of a meeting it.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_03]: And then he said, dude, this is just what I needed.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_03]: And I thought he was doing better.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_03]: So as we all said, we all thought he was doing better.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I hear stories like that all the time.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: I'm laughing because he's just a funny dude.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm laughing about that.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, the first time I met him was like,
- 1:12[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know four years ago, and then we were at this film fest.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then I didn't know anyone there, so it was kind of awkward.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_03]: So, when I saw him, I was like, I knew his face, saw him like, oh, another Vietnamese comic.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_03]: And I was just kicking it.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_03]: And he was like, I was like, talking to this girl.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_03]: Not something as a girl, and then I was like, man, I don't know what to do, I don't know if she likes me.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, bro, trust me, you're young.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_03]: I wouldn't even think my getting married or anything right now, just do anything.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_03]: We're just clapping up, so.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: He's a great dude, man.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's a great dude.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, when you study his comedy, what you realize is that he did a lot of work.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: To get to the bits that he did, you have to like work it over and over.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I think,
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: most comedians like in the real big world, not the famous ones, but the ones that are coming up, you can tell the ones that put the work in, because the bits are like, polished and tight.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's what I meant to say, yeah, they're tighter.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_03]: And um...
- 2:17[SPEAKER_03]: He's been on the grind like he's been on the grind.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_03]: He started I toy with Jason Cheney and I know they started around the same time Like this is like 13 years ago or something.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know the crazy thing is Alex was just popping off You know he opened for Ronnie and he was just getting his footing in the acting world and all that it was insane Yeah, I know but
- 2:45[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm going to try my best to honor him and doing what I do and trying to represent new stuff.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_03]: It's all we can do because we're all, I mean, we drove the same egg one time, me him, the win, and Andy van to do a show.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_03]: And he was always just like, damn, we're like the only bits in common.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_03]: We got to keep going and so I'm going to try my best.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: That dude, Viet Man, yo, that dude has, he's another level man.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, you guys are all good, but that guy is, he's so crazy, Viet is, you mean, you can't even speak English, the dude can't even speak English is like, oh, like, it's the crazy is, he, Viet is the guy for me that makes,
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: the broken English in Vietnamese, like, like, we should call it Fabi, right?
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's the one that can make it cool.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he, he stayed with me.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_03]: I did a, I had a show in Utah and he came with me and who just stayed in my house for like the whole weekend.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_03]: And my parents were, my whole family was dying whenever he was saying anything.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_03]: Really?
- 4:07[SPEAKER_03]: He's so funny.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because he's, you know, he's really smart.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I got to talk about your dad, man.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: That's your dad, right?
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: It does not feel like you're dad in these videos.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's the weirdest shit.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's really your dad.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_03]: Right, yeah, yeah.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_03]: In the cooking videos?
- 4:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_03]: Did he ever do a jail time?
- 4:24[SPEAKER_03]: Not serious.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_03]: You know, not like anything that's worth saying, but yeah, yeah, he spent a few days here and there.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_03]: You know, yeah, OG.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_03]: How much, how much older is he than you?
- 4:38[SPEAKER_03]: How old was he when he had you?
- 4:41[SPEAKER_03]: He's 50 now.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_03]: He had me when he was like, 22.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I'm your dad's age.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm your dad's age.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: I just turned 15 November.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, shit.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: This is crazy.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: Damn, I got to meet you dad one day, man.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that'd be so fun.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_03]: So wait, are they living out here in LA with you or my whole family, all in Utah?
- 5:07[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure if when I hear her.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_03]: So every time you shoot these food ones, you gotta shoot at home.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_03]: I find that to Utah and we film like three or four in a row, and then I stop piling.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, so yeah, he's a Utah, but when he moved to the states, he was in the Bronx efforts for a bit in the Atlanta, and then he did some some gang stuff.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_03]: You're laughing at it.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_03]: Some gang stuff and his parents found out and they were like, this is not good.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_03]: And they had like an uncle or something when Utah, their own grocery store.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_03]: And then they were like, oh, just come move to like, they told my dad to move to Utah to work for him.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: You got it.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so this is what I want to get into.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: I want a relationship with my children where your dad has it with you.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: How did he make that possible?
- 6:04[SPEAKER_03]: He's very honest about his mistakes in life.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_03]: He's not a perfect person.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_03]: He was a drug addict and gambling addict and did some other things.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_03]: And he's very honest with me, and he's like, this is, he told me he was like, well, don't ever do math.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, don't ever do math.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, why?
- 6:28[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, because that shit is good.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_03]: You can't, if you do math, you can't quit.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: And he went, has he had he ever?
- 6:35[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, he was on Cougan, man.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_03]: When I was in high school.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_03]: And we all went a nail salon when I was going up.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_03]: So he was, you know, he lose it.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_03]: No, he almost, like, the Nassalon was pretty busy when I was going up, but then because of his gambling, there was a one point when we went from like making like almost a million years to like a food stamps, like within two years because he was just gambling so much.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_03]: How do you think that affect you?
- 7:06[SPEAKER_03]: Me?
- 7:06[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_03]: Because you watched it, right?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_03]: You saw?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I want to look at the casinos with him.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_03]: I think for me, I think, on just for me, I would say I had no interest in doing coke, or meth, because I'm like, I know a lot of people, you know, do it here and there, but I'm like, for me, I'm like, oh, I think I'm good, you know?
- 7:27[SPEAKER_03]: I like coffee, I smoke weed sometimes, I like zin.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_03]: And I think naturally my DNA, I'm like, I have a addictive personality.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm like, I'm the biggest stick to these two, two, three things, that's more chill.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_03]: And stick away from, you know, that kind of stuff.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_03]: loss of him being so honest and being so open let me be more open with him like in our family if we're having problems we just we just talk about it in my damn you know this girl didn't respond or like I did bad at the show or whatever we just we pretty open with it
- 8:01[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: And how many of you are there?
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: I have two brothers, younger, older.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: I have two younger brothers.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: Man, because that relationship with your dad, man, I think it's really special.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: Because I was like, I won't point.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, this can't be his dad, because the bond, right?
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_01]: Because you don't see this in Jimmy's family.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, how close your dad's and sons are, you know?
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: You don't see it.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like,
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: so touched by how close you guys are.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: Because I mean, that's the work that I do too, right?
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I'm always talking about being close to our parents or being close to my kids.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I make that such a big deal in my life is something that I really want.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then I get to see it with the way you're dead.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: So in many ways, super successful to me.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: you can tell you that too.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: Well, hopefully he'll be watching this.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: Super successful.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think, um, I think being able to have that relationship with with your kids.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_03]: He was, uh, his, his relationship with his dad was more, I guess, I know, stereotypical.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_03]: Traditional.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_03]: He'll get be a lot and like, you know,
- 9:12[SPEAKER_03]: always fighting like they couldn't really be in the same room for like if we visited my grandparents and we call for like a day or two days and then I think one of that they started fighting and doing stuff arguing and it's more like um then for him he was like I think he's more Americanized to move to the states when he was like 15 or 16 so he had a good good both and was more like when I have kids I want to just be more be different open real yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: When did you get into the comedy?
- 9:44[SPEAKER_03]: I started comedy when I was in college.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I was, I was Tony Abba, a fake ID.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: Why did you get into it?
- 9:53[SPEAKER_03]: What made you, what inspired you to get into comedy?
- 9:56[SPEAKER_03]: I've always been kind of fascinated.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_03]: I've always loved watching comedies, like stamp comedy.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_03]: It wasn't until I was like, my friend told me, hey, I'm gonna go to an open, like, this is a Utah.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, I'm gonna go to an open, like, and I was like, you, I thought you had to be famous until I go through it.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_03]: You didn't know.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I didn't know.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_03]: And I wanna go watch.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, wait, so anyone can sign up?
- 10:18[SPEAKER_03]: And I was watching it.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, and this guy's suck.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, how did you know what it look?
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: How did you know that you would be better than them?
- 10:28[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_03]: I knew that I could be as bad as them.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I know I could be that bad.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_03]: Like the bare minimum.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_03]: I can do that bad.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like a fine line.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_03]: So I I watched a few timers and I signed up once or twice and then finally they let me up.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_03]: I got like one laugh
- 10:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I was like them.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_03]: I killed it.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_03]: No, but like the one love.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you did kill it.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_03]: Right?
- 10:55[SPEAKER_03]: It was my heart was beating so fast.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, after I'm like them.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_03]: I kind of want to feel this again.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, this is my meth right here.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, my crystal meth right here.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_03]: This is my addition.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so I did that and then um and then
- 11:08[SPEAKER_03]: Actually, so on the side, I was managing a social media for different brands and then I started managing a DM Jimmy O'Yang and was like, hey, can I do your TikTok?
- 11:20[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, wow.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_03]: Because people are posting your clips and you can't even have an account.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_03]: And then he responded, this is like when his first special came out.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_03]: We see on that big girl show yet.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he was on Silicon Valley.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_03]: Silicon Valley.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_03]: His first comedy special just came out.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_03]: This is like 20, 20, I think.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah, that's recent.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then I was like, let me do it.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_03]: And he was like, oh, I'm kind of looking for someone.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_03]: Let's just try it out for a month.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_03]: Let's see how it goes.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_03]: And the first month, I made his count and I blew it up from zero to like a million followers.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_03]: What?
- 11:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, his clip were going crazy by a world and I was just editing them, I'm just posting them and then after that he was like, all this, you know, let's keep doing this thing.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_03]: And then eight months later, he was like, uh, you want to move to L.A. and work from you.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god, what a story.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, very crazy story.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_03]: I just slid in the DMs.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_03]: That is crazy lucky.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a good timing, and, you know, so, yeah, so I was like, okay, I was, I was pre-med at the time for college, and then until my parents, and then I was a handgun, I'm trying to move to LA to work for Jamie, I have a job, I can afford rent just just to get by, and I want to do standard.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_03]: And then my mom was like, oh, yeah, I think, I mean, you know, if anything, this would probably help you get into medical school, this is kind of a cool, like it was standing out on your resume, who else is doing this?
- 12:48[SPEAKER_03]: Right, right.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I guess that's true.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_03]: So I went,
- 12:54[SPEAKER_03]: and moved here like 21 and then I was working for him and then I didn't have any friends at a time so I was like that might my way to get out with the house was through the comedy, you know?
- 13:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so yeah.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_03]: So how long you were for Jimmy?
- 13:10[SPEAKER_03]: For uh, up until like uh,
- 13:15[SPEAKER_03]: I think like early Tony and Tony, no, like five.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_03]: That's a long time.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_03]: Like three years, three, four years.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_03]: That's a long time.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you still keep in touch with Jimmy?
- 13:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're still pretty close.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_03]: I got to open for him a few times last year.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_03]: In San Jose actually, that was crazy.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_03]: That was like, we did two shows.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_03]: I was like 3,000 people.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_03]: And then like the biggest venue I've ever did.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: And it was, so when you, when you open for a Jimmy O'Yang, right, you basically, I mean, it's almost like you made it, right?
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you think about it, right?
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we're not talking about like, you got your Netflix special or anything like that.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: But basically, you just have to do more of that, right?
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: How does that affect the trajectory of your career?
- 14:11[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_03]: It does.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_03]: No, I don't think it does.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_03]: It's a cool credit.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: But it doesn't affect it.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_03]: No.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_03]: It's just kind of like, um, you're only as good as your last show.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_03]: I just got to go say, okay.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_03]: That's cool.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_03]: And then the big thing is, I need to keep doing that bigger venues.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_03]: So I can be more comfortable.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_03]: It's a different thing.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_03]: I got to open for my friend Jason and Asia in December.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_03]: We traveled to like six different countries.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_03]: And most of them were theaters.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_03]: It was really fun, from there.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_03]: I got more comfortable performing in front of theaters in front of over like a thousand people.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_03]: And it's like, you had to be more physical, be more talk different a little bit than that club.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: So the bigger the audience at a comedy show, the more you have more energy or it's just a different leverage.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_03]: It's not more energy, it's more like, because they can't, you're so small on the stage.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_03]: So like, I felt like I had a, like,
- 15:07[SPEAKER_03]: The a little bit more expressive how it moved.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_03]: And a club, making all seemy so they can really see like my own things.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know what I mean?
- 15:17[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, stuff like that.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_01]: Are you cold, man?
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: A little bit.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: Here, let me give you my jacket, right?
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, it's fine.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: You sure.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: I don't mind.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: You sure.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, let me get that way.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'll get you.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: We'll put it.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: first time.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: Take it off, take it off.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_03]: We've got to hide your nipples, man.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_03]: This episode about to be an only fan, you know.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: I know you manage only fans.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: Get into that.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: So all right, so then Jimmy is who started your sort of coming to Hell night.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: But what about the the Instagram
- 16:02[SPEAKER_03]: like the cooking stuff.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the cooking stuff and yeah.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_03]: You know what it was?
- 16:07[SPEAKER_03]: My, my, me and my friend Jason, the one I, I go on tour with.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_03]: We made a bit.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_03]: We're like, oh, let's just try to post three times a week.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_03]: just to keep if you want to really do this thing which you keep posting minimum three times a week.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_03]: And then I was posting some stand up stuff, I posted some skits.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, I don't know what I'm posting.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_03]: And then I also, I worked with Avarajer.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm able to kind of see how he shoots his food things.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_03]: So with that in the comedy, and I was like, and then I posted a video of me and my dad eating like, I'll be alone, like, there he is.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_03]: So, and then it did pretty good.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_03]: And I was like,
- 16:46[SPEAKER_03]: When you're doing this and then I kind of just flew back and I'm like, let's just film like two or three and see how those and then um because your dad is a riot.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_03]: No, he's crazy.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_03]: He's crazy.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_03]: We don't even skip those.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_03]: I like giving you know certain things, but like it's mostly because him saying stuff.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because it's almost like you take a back seat when he's on live, you know?
- 17:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_03]: He's such a character and a character.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_03]: I can't really let this lamb do this thing you can't really compete with that.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I see that I see them like whoa, it's like this is your dad show.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, I let him because it's so funny It needs me saying crazy shit, and I'm like I just just record this is daddy pepper show.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, he needs his own show
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: it's crazy.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_01]: So that kicked off with hope alone.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because that that that that never saw was funny because when you when you said hope it long yeah and he's like I don't know if you caught that but you tried to correct you is like because you you didn't use the right accent so it becomes a different word.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: You know it becomes a thing.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's just it's crazy right here.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_01]: But you can't say it.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_01]: Because that watch this.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's great.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's great.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like all of these things that happen in your life or like things that you don't really plan for Yeah, yeah, I guess oh, not I think about it.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't I didn't realize that.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean the open mic thing.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_01]: I mean you need it to be Exposed to that and then you do it, right and then you're like, I got a show up to that thing.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah
- 18:19[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_03]: That's a good point.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_03]: I never really thought about it.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_03]: It's more like a, I guess I'm kind of like, um, I'm not, I have goals and I have things I want to do, but I'm not, I'm still open to whatever, well, life has happened, you know, yeah.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: So as a, as a standup, right, like when you're going through this journey last five years, how do you get better?
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, is it really a matter of just like showing up to the open mics all the time or is it something else like you got to study the tape more of like, you know, Chappelle Chris Rock and and you got to just go harder.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_03]: I think watching them helps and going to the mics helps, but like the only way to get there is to get more stage time and stage time and LA is really hard to get really good like good stage time.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_03]: And how do you get, when I was planning, when I first said, okay, I'm gonna take this more serious.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, how do I get more stage time on like good shows?
- 19:21[SPEAKER_03]: I need to get booked and the only book you with your famous, if you, you know, if, yeah, public, if your famous, you can sell tickets or, or they're doing you a favor.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_03]: One of the three and I was like, okay, so what do I have to offer right now?
- 19:38[SPEAKER_03]: I can't really tell if tickets and nothing is so I started doing my own show.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_03]: I started producing a show with my friend Maddie in mid-city and it was like mainly Asian comics, that would book but yeah it was like a good show, a sold out, we had like some big people who stopped by and now everyone wants to do my show.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_03]: So then what's the name of the show?
- 19:59[SPEAKER_03]: I start doing that, but it's called, it was called the city comedy, but, and then they were like, oh, basically they're like, if you let me do your show, you can do my show, what?
- 20:13[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, when I was first starting, so then that's how I got it.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's how you got more stage time.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because they're like, they want everyone wants to do will show.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_03]: So they're like, why do you stop it?
- 20:23[SPEAKER_03]: I started going on the road and
- 20:25[SPEAKER_03]: making bigger money, getting our shows without having to do this.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_03]: So it was just a vehicle for me to get that going.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: But see, and that's the thing, these things again, you can't plan it.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: How did you know that that bartering system between you and the other comics were gonna happen, right?
- 20:44[SPEAKER_03]: it's like unspoken like everyone's like did you know that when you started i feel like a few people jimmy told me actually it was like his he he started a show at who knows when he was first first first starting so i was like okay i need to do a show that's like a good show and i want like a you know a bad show so that one and then uh
- 21:04[SPEAKER_03]: And then, I was like, because it's so hard to tell tickets.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_03]: I would have the first show sold out easily, because I just invited everyone I knew.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_03]: But then the second show, they were like, oh, I mean, I can't buy the same people.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_03]: So then, I started, I became friends with people I met off of Facebook Marketplace, Uber drivers, just like anyone, just casual conversation.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, I have a show.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_03]: You want to come out Thursday?
- 21:28[SPEAKER_03]: And then like, okay, yeah, you seem like you were making a laugh right now.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_03]: So there he is, came and then just anything, anyone that would be down to come, it's just that Phil sees so like bigger comments would come.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_03]: And then that's where I met Jason Cheney, I booked him and then I put myself before him.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_03]: So he, he had to watch my set.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_03]: And I want like if you're gonna come and then I paid like a hundred bucks for 12 or 10 minutes for like the bigger Comedians and then so he watched my set and then I booked him six months later again I did like pretty much new jokes and I put myself before him again Then he was like oh shit you want to open for me in Ontario
- 22:10[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, okay, and then I didn't go in and then we just kind of can't doing it and I've been touring with them for like two years now.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: So who are your icons?
- 22:22[SPEAKER_01]: Who do you like?
- 22:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like?
- 22:25[SPEAKER_03]: Um, how many?
- 22:27[SPEAKER_03]: I really, the first special I think I ever watched was Kimahart.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_03]: Kevin Hart.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I watch that so many times.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, really?
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: That one special you just watched it over and over and over again?
- 22:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think it's like laughing my pain or like what's called a little big man or something?
- 22:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, it's funny.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then I really like Qingwing too.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Qingwing, it's great.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_03]: I can't really do like, I can't make a lotion funny.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_03]: I can't make something so, so... Yeah.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_03]: specific, so funny, that I really like on a Moscow, you know, right?
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, very, he just drills down into like the micro details and it just expands it and that's what kind of makes it like interesting, right?
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: You just never think like buying pants at Costco is a funny thing until, you know, he talks about him specifically.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: Very specific, drills down on it.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_03]: Um, Alyssa Nink.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I do.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he's so far, I love his stories.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, I tell stories mainly in my stand-up.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so I'm like, okay, it's like someone that I like aspire to to be like, yeah.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I think,
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: The storytelling part is what Shappelle nails down because now he's just sitting and he's just like telling you a story like a very basic story, but the way it comes out is just so funny.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: So charismatic, right?
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's so relaxed and then you get absorbed into like the moment and then it just like it hits you at some point where he delivers a punch line or something like that.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_03]: You know like that's that's genius.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_03]: It's so hard, comedy so hard, it's just like, you can, two people can say the exact same thing, but it's just how they say it.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_03]: In voice or their body language, it's just like, it makes it so different.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not calling you a funny-looking guy, but you do look pretty fucking funny.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you and I look when people look at you, that's your advantage.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_01]: You try.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, this is why I look like this.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_03]: This is why I'm not bluff right now, okay?
- 24:33[SPEAKER_03]: If it wasn't from my comedy career, I'd be having a six-pack.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_01]: Do you want to do what do you want to do it?
- 24:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, eventually.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: You think, okay, I wanted to ask you about that actually.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think that would change your comedy?
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: If you recopositioned your body?
- 24:53[SPEAKER_03]: No, no, no anymore.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_03]: Um, and how it looks helps, but also I was like, you know, it shouldn't rely on how it looked I guess.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think our first, um, uh, got, uh, came across you when you're doing Uncle Roger.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: When you're, uh, Roger as the loan shark.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: How did you meet Uncle Roger?
- 25:31[SPEAKER_03]: I meant I go through, uh, Jimmy.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, okay.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_03]: It was, uh, some part, some party thing.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_03]: I think he just moved there and he was like, oh, I'm looking for a,
- 25:43[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, it makes sense.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: Since you had your shooting at Griffith Park, and you, like, it looked like it.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: It was like a number of parks around here.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_01]: You were like being tied up or like it's just like all this time.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: Time came up and yeah.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was so, yeah, I think that's when I first saw your,
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so you come up that was for me when when I began to get exposed to your work.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, cool.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's with Uncle Roger.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_03]: He's dope.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he's like super nice.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, super chill.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna ride you.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just super chill.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like Uncle Roger.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm gonna ride you.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_03]: I get scared when he's in the room.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: And somebody, I actually hung out with him twice.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: We would carry O King one time and he's just a really like quiet kind of guy.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's so yeah, super chill.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, super chill kind of guy.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_03]: And that was carry O King the Holy Five.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, he does.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_03]: We were in Dubai in January.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_03]: And for some like thing and then he
- 26:46[SPEAKER_03]: It was like, I was jet lagged and we didn't sleep and he said, yo, let's go to karaoke.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_03]: Because he had to go to the airport super early.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_03]: He was like, let's go to karaoke.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_03]: And it was like, we're like, he was going in.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_03]: And then I was, I had some to drink too.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm like, okay, this is that karaoke actually is pretty fun.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_03]: Because when I was younger, karaoke was just like, Auntie's screaming in the morning.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_03]: No pitch.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so, oh, this is kind of fun.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: When you think about like, the last, let's say, five years, right?
- 27:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think?
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: I, because I look at, I've studied you and I'm thinking, you, it feels like you did all the right things and then and then some like these things kind of like, um,
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: helped with certain dippity and people that you made along the way in the last five years.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: But what do you think?
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm just asking for guidance for like younger comedians or younger artists.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think in the last five years that you could have done more to like even propel your career and further?
- 27:53[SPEAKER_03]: Um, that's a really good question.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_03]: I mean,
- 28:02[SPEAKER_03]: I think when I was first starting out, I wasn't really sure what I was doing.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_03]: I was doing social media for a lot of people.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_03]: So I was probably not getting up as much as I should have.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_03]: Wait, getting up on stage.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, performing as much.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_03]: I were like dedicating, much to my craft as I should have been time-wise.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_03]: Because I was like, I was trying to do everything.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_03]: I was like editing for like,
- 28:28[SPEAKER_03]: I won't, with like, next show too.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_03]: And like, some other brand and stuff like that.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_03]: And I was making like 10k a month when I first moved here.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_03]: I was making way with money, but when I first moved here, then I am now, holy cow.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then, but then it's like,
- 28:44[SPEAKER_03]: I was like, oh, I just find I just work and that night I'll go do the open mic and then I'll be fine.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_03]: And then it's like, that's not how it works.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_03]: How it works is that you do work all day, you get up by eight and then you work on from home and edit it.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_03]: And by the time I guess it's seven and you're like exhausted.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_03]: And then even when even if you, so like something is out of like, I'm just too lazy, but even if I would go out, it wouldn't really be the best to my ability.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like, you can't really, if you really want to make it as artists, you have to do the art.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_03]: Do the art and then sacrifice the money and like something.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be hard.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_03]: Like, um, you got a map.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_03]: It's a user credit card.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, you know what I mean?
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: But dude, that makes so much sense.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: And that's like not usually talked about a lot because
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: What you're saying is, you need to be fresh.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_01]: You need to be like, you have to have that power going into the practice and not be spent.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_03]: Right, like you need to have time to do nothing.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_03]: And then like, really just think about what you want to say or what you want to do.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_03]: Because that takes, like, half of my comedy, I'm like, I'm like, going to walk, or I'm,
- 29:58[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, yeah, I'm just like, I need that time a few hours a day just that not do work or not do anything just the process.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_03]: And that takes time to and then you get the factor that into and you have to shower and you have to do laundry and pay bills and do all those things and sleep.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like, there's only so many hours in a day and you have to prioritize the art if you're going to take a series.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: Man, I wish somebody told me that my 20s, you know?
- 30:27[SPEAKER_01]: Because that makes all the difference in the world.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: When you think about it is, you know, you think as a young person, you're 24 years old and you're just getting into LA and your musician or a film person and you're trying to figure out like where you're going but you're talented, right?
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know you're talented.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody wants you and you're making good money.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: You make a 10k.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: You make a good money editing.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: You're doing whatever it is, but the reality is like the art of what you really brought into the world.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, suffers.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: But there is this flip side of all of this, which is being exposed to the social media side for Jimmy Yang.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_01]: exposed to all the technical things that these guys were doing.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_03]: Right, right.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_03]: I think, yeah, I think that was probably good, but also I was doing way up a bunch of other shit too.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, I just make it enough to pay rent and get by and get on stage.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and then that leaves you more time to get on stage.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_03]: You don't need to make more than that.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_03]: But I don't know, it's so hard.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_03]: I think it was that.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_03]: I think meeting people that are kind of like in the community of comedy for me helped propel me because I'm like, you feel like you're a part of something.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_03]: Instead of just like a so little thing.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that was what really helped me.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, okay, this is, it's like a fun time.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't feel like work going to help my friend are going to be there.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, right.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: Something that helped a lot too.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think makes a good comedian?
- 32:17[SPEAKER_01]: Trump makes it.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: Trump makes a good artist.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: Trump makes a good artist.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: When your dad's yelling at you and you get traumatized, right.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_03]: I think, oh man, what makes a good comedian?
- 32:29[SPEAKER_03]: There's so many different things.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_03]: I think, uh, I mean, it's, uh, yeah, honestly, it is trauma.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, what kind of trauma did you have?
- 32:37[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, man.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_03]: X. I mean, I talked about before on a different podcast.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's fine.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_03]: I think I, um, my dad, so when I was in high school, when my, and when my dad was on a peak of his job, drug terror, drug terror, and then gambling and something like that, but then he would, uh, he was, he was talking to some of the note text.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: Right and weren't she still married to your mom.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, no, they're still there still together.
- 33:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they're good now He's like sober.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_03]: He got shit, you know, I mean He's clean and he figured his life out.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm very proud of him, but When I was younger, he was not so good.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, and he was doing the fuck some fuck shit.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and And then he filmed it Because he was trying to quit.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_03]: Oh no, she was trying to quit.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_03]: They're not tank
- 33:38[SPEAKER_03]: And then he was like, oh, if you quit, I'm going to show this to your family, right?
- 33:43[SPEAKER_03]: That you, that you, because she had a family too.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you did a savage, he, he, he, he, he, he about that life, but, uh, so then he kind of find the video.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_03]: It's like somewhere in his email, but do you know who knows how to use his email?
- 34:04[SPEAKER_03]: You do me.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_03]: So I was in the nail office, it was Saturday, busy, busy, like packed, people waiting.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_03]: And did he assign you to go look for the video?
- 34:15[SPEAKER_03]: He was like, how do you, uh, will, will?
- 34:18[SPEAKER_03]: How you find the email, the video on the email?
- 34:22[SPEAKER_03]: And then I was like, you just, what do you mean, there's a search bar, you just search whatever.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_03]: So I was like, I can't find it.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_03]: So I searched it and then I saw the video, I didn't watch the video.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_03]: I did jerk off the later.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_03]: No kidding.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_03]: You're a sick man.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_03]: No, but I saw the thumbnail.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_03]: And then I'm like, what the off?
- 34:42[SPEAKER_03]: Because even in a really big tattoo, so in the thumbnail, you see him have like, all you see him.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_03]: You don't really see your girl.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm like, brother.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you're back in the new, buddy.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_03]: Huh?
- 34:53[SPEAKER_03]: How are you supposed to get a black man?
- 34:54[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm saying, I'm like, bro, if you send this to anyone, the only person you're outing is yourself.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_03]: No, it's not like, it's not like 15.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: And you, you have to sense to tell him that.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because I was like, I feel like I, since my parents had me so young, I feel like I grew up with them.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, we're like, they're parents first, but then, you know, friends also because we're just, we're, I mean, they were like, so young.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_03]: And they're really 20s having kids trying to figure it out.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_03]: It's telling like, I don't know what to do with it.
- 35:27[SPEAKER_03]: So we're just kind of, you know, so I give them some, some leeway.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: So you told my 15 dad, do not show this video.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: You're not outing anybody, but yourself.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_03]: And what he said to that, what he was, he did, he kind of forgot I was there.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_03]: Like he was so like in the moment and on drugs, he like didn't clock that like, oh, I just told by son, and I'm cheating on his mom.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_03]: Do you know what I mean?
- 35:54[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it was just like, yeah.
- 35:56[SPEAKER_03]: So then a week after my mom found out, because she found the video somewhere.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, it was, it was rough, but yeah.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_01]: And how did they stay together?
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's crazy.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_03]: I should've bought a leave.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_03]: And then she just, she kind of gave him like an automaton.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_03]: It was like, hey, you have to clean up, we could go gambling, and this is your last chance.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: Did you clean up after that?
- 36:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we did clean up.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_03]: These actually, he sold the Nelson Lines before COVID, so he got pretty lucky.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_03]: And then they moved, I grew up in Phoenix.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_03]: This is all in Phoenix.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_03]: And then they sold the business and moved back to Utah with my grandparents and the extended family.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_03]: And then me, I did Ayahuasco with my dad before.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_03]: Tell me about that.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, how did you, like, how did that even come up?
- 37:00[SPEAKER_03]: I was gonna experiment with psychedelics.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_03]: during COVID and then my friend I wasca first and then he told me about his experience and how what he thought he was and some of this trauma and I told my mom about it.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_03]: Like, oh, my friend Chris really, you know, Chris, Chris Lee?
- 37:19[SPEAKER_03]: Chris Lee.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's another videographer.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_03]: He's a creative director, but he was at Nike for like a few years.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_03]: But he's basically Utah, but he's like, kind of like, you know, in the Vietnamese community, he's just so familiar.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but anyway, he told me about it.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_03]: And I told my mom, and then she did her own research.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_03]: It was like a year after that, she was like, hey, me and your dad are going to go do Ayahuasca.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_03]: What in Orlando?
- 37:48[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_03]: They did it.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_03]: Before you.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_03]: Before me.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_03]: Because I was kind of scared.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_03]: I was out of the whole thing, but they did it.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_03]: And they came back and they seem like closer.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_03]: My God.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_03]: Wow.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_03]: They hear a lot of their own stuff.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_03]: And.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_03]: My dad actually was like, it was so intense, he was like begging for his life.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_03]: He told me, he was like, he just couldn't handle it.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_03]: And he's like, I think I had to go one more time.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_03]: And then a year after that, he invited me and my younger brother, Ethan, to go do it with him in Orlando.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_03]: And how was it?
- 38:25[SPEAKER_03]: It was beautiful, it was for me it was really nice because I had a cousin in my past away a year before that.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_03]: And I got to see him and I feel like I healed a lot of stuff that I felt.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_01]: I used to say this in the beginning of my early years in my podcast, I was like, I used to come for like a comedian, right?
- 38:45[SPEAKER_01]: I used to come to like have this conversation with the comedian or rapper or musician.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: But man, the richness, the texture of life comes out way beyond the art that they do.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what makes this work so interesting as a creative or, you know, the fact that, you know, the question is, what makes a good comedian trauma?
- 39:12[SPEAKER_01]: Trauma comes, a good comedy comes from trauma.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_01]: And then this whole thing I wasca with your father and how beautiful, like that whole trajectory is like something that I think most parents should go through with their child.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think so too.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think so too.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_03]: What kind of an awesome experience is you getting to do I wasca with your dad?
- 39:34[SPEAKER_03]: I know.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_03]: He was gone through it.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_03]: He was, he was like, don't have hours.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_03]: On the one with you.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_03]: Ah, just,
- 39:43[SPEAKER_03]: like throwing up his trauma.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you're getting it out.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_03]: But if he couldn't, nothing was coming out.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_03]: It was just to get his driving for hours.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_03]: But what about you?
- 39:52[SPEAKER_03]: I was crying a lot.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_03]: Me and my brother for like, I threw up a little bit.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_03]: But what were you crying about?
- 39:59[SPEAKER_03]: I saw my cousin like, pack away from from suicide a year before.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_03]: And then we were at one two weeks apart.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_03]: So we were very close to throwing up
- 40:13[SPEAKER_03]: We got an argument, and then it was like really dumb thing, but I just quasi-dally moved LA three months after.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_03]: So we didn't talk until I saw my undexgiving, and it was kind of awkward.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_03]: And then two weeks before your pass, he drove up to LA, and we were just hanging out for a few days, like all the times.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_03]: And then I was like, damn, I feel like this is nice.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I missed his hang.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_03]: And then he passed away.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, oh man, I should have called him.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I should have called him more.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_03]: I should have been more present.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_03]: you know, remember how a family.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_03]: But in my trip, it was just a collection of memories of us just hanging out when we were kids, when we were older, driving, singing a song, going in the gym.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, oh, I shouldn't feel guilty.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_03]: I should be grateful that I do have these memories.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_03]: You know, so yeah.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: Shout to your cousin and to Alex, man, all these guys that yeah, that's traumatic to lose people like this too, right?
- 41:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because it's not, when my grandma passed it was sad, but he was like, kind of, it was all like, yeah.
- 41:26[SPEAKER_03]: When they're young, when they're not supposed to pass and they do pass, I'm like, that's not right.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_03]: That's not supposed to happen though, but does he have you been to Vietnam?
- 41:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love it.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_03]: I've been a kid since last time.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_03]: I went that last year.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: OK. Did you ever go to any comedy shows in Vietnam?
- 41:43[SPEAKER_03]: I did a comedy show in Vietnam.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_03]: Which one?
- 41:46[SPEAKER_03]: I saw some jazz bar.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_01]: OK. Who organized it?
- 41:52[SPEAKER_03]: And Kita?
- 41:53[SPEAKER_03]: OK. Do you know her?
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: Adult.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_03]: She's like Indian.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: The Vietnamese comedy scene is blown up.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's like a cocktail.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a deal.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a deal is, yeah, it's somebody took me to a second deal last year and it was amazing.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they really good.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_03]: So my show I co-hat online with, uh,
- 42:19[SPEAKER_01]: We lay, I think we lay is like one of the OGs and second deal.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_03]: He created it.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_03]: So I got to do it and he had a comedy in English and forever.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_03]: So it was fun to see him.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_01]: But he's a good guy.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_01]: So you actually did one.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I did the last year, yeah.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_01]: How old was it?
- 42:41[SPEAKER_03]: It was smart, we didn't two shows.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_03]: It was like 60 people each.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_03]: It was fun, the crowd was great.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_01]: Did that land, did your material land?
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: I was killing the game.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_03]: It was fun, it was fun, yeah.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_03]: People weren't, they're really like.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I guess it's different, you know, like, Saigon and especially like district one or district two is like, they're pretty, they're pretty English.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they are so, everybody's recently seen American eyes and get all my references.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_03]: They did it, I was talking, I was going then they're like, oh, yeah, so they do it over there.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_03]: I tried to, two, a few jokes and Vietnamese that they did not land.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_01]: Ironically, huh?
- 43:18[SPEAKER_01]: Come on, Vietnamese is terrible.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_01]: Do you, like, what is next?
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: What is new?
- 43:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what's next next thing?
- 43:32[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I've been, uh, there's like different stages of community, uh, there's like open mic, there's bringer shows, and then your, uh, your host, or your, you know, your cold open host feature and then headliner.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, is this an official trajectory that you're describing?
- 43:50[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty much.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody knows it.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great comedy, yeah.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, one more time.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: Open Mike.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: Open Mike.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_01]: Bring your shows.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_01]: Bring your shows with that.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_03]: Bring your shows means you get booked on a show, but you only can perform if you're bringing people.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_01]: Hold on.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_03]: Four to five people.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_01]: You just need to bring four or five people.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_03]: And then you get five minutes.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_03]: So bring your shows.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_03]: And then, uh, holes are called open.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_03]: Like you pretty much open a show.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_03]: You go first.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_03]: And then host is like, you know, you're like the host.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're the host, yeah.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_03]: And then you got host gets paid.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_03]: You get booked these like in-pay for comedy.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_03]: And then feature and then headliner.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_03]: So when we meet the big, the big bucks.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_03]: I'm a feature right now.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_03]: I was a host and I was doing quote-obin last year.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_03]: Now I've been featuring for the past year.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm starting to headline smaller shows.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_03]: Maybe 10 shows so far, then Utah or Phoenix, so I've had a few here, and I'm headlighting my biggest show on April 24th, and San Francisco at Cobb's Comedy.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's that's my daughter's birthday April 24th.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_01]: We were trying to figure out we were trying to figure out is that last year or this year But it's this year this year.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_01]: This year in 26 April 24th Where's it going to be at San Francisco, right?
- 45:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah San Francisco, I call this comedy.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's the biggest venue of every headline How many people?
- 45:16[SPEAKER_03]: How many seats?
- 45:16[SPEAKER_03]: 100.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, it's a big 100.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'm like the first Vietnamese and you and it sold out yet or not yet.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_03]: I've sold three tickets
- 45:26[SPEAKER_03]: So now what I don't know I forgot I'm trying for a year out.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_03]: I think I have this well it's 400 total Yeah, but because there's like upstairs and downstairs, so if I get the 200 the downstairs would be sold out and there'll still be a good show So my goal is just 200
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: All right, well, we're trying to get people in the Bay area to go see a wheel pepper shell, okay.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: My dad will be there.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_01]: Your dad will be there.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_01]: So what what days at the Friday?
- 45:51[SPEAKER_01]: Friday.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a Friday.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: My daughter wants to go.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_01]: You have.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_01]: Right there.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, I want to go.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_03]: You want to come toast and toast?
- 45:59[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, is it PG third?
- 46:01[SPEAKER_01]: Is it?
- 46:01[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's right.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_03]: It's pretty, yeah, I mean, there's a few things as like more, but it's 18, I guess.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love my kids listen to a lot.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't, I don't hold back.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let me ask you this.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, don't you think with the way that you grew up?
- 46:17[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you're that probably didn't hold back, right?
- 46:19[SPEAKER_01]: No, he never, like, I don't, that's the thing, I don't feel like we should hold back with our kids.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_03]: It's because they're gonna grow up in the real world, right?
- 46:29[SPEAKER_03]: And they're gonna hear anyway on TikTok or whatever.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're gonna see it.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: They're gonna be exposed to all of it.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_01]: So like,
- 46:35[SPEAKER_03]: The first time I smoked weed was with my dad, actually.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_03]: Really?
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, hold where you?
- 46:40[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't miss $1, 2018, which is like older.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you can't miss my smoke.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_01]: Smoke weed would do that.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, when I was 18, at my birthday.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_03]: He was like, oh, if you're going to do it, you should do it with me.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_03]: So you know how it's supposed to feel like.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_03]: Right, right, right.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_03]: In case you go outside and you do something else, you're like, oh, this is not how I'm all.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think of asked this question with all the comedians who've been on the show before.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like in order to be a really good comedian, you kind of have to be smart.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, how, I mean, I think any job that you do in the entertainment business, you gotta be smart.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_01]: You gotta be really intelligent to do what you do in order to make it to the big leagues.
- 47:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I would say so.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_03]: Or I don't know about intelligence, but at least emotional intelligence.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 47:28[SPEAKER_03]: What do you mean by that?
- 47:32[SPEAKER_03]: Every good comedian, if you ask any comedian to do it like a ACT over there, they're retarded.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_03]: But if you're like, you think, look out person, I think they can read the room more.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_03]: You have to be able to read the room and like understand, yeah, the bare minimum.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_03]: This would be a good comment.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_03]: You have to do that.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_03]: At least that.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_03]: But most of them are books about why they're retarded.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, most of them are not.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I think a lot of comedians too have been that I met are like a lot of more introverted.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_03]: That's a good point.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, very few of them are like out there.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: Very few are like extroverts.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_03]: The weirdest thing.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I think I'm introvert.
- 48:18[SPEAKER_01]: I could feel that energy.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_01]: When you walked up, I was like, yeah, you're probably an introvert.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_03]: They're down.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_03]: You should do comedy, bro.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_01]: I swear, well, I've dreamt of it my entire life, but here's the problem with that.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think in order to be a good, anything like a singer, a comedian, like you have to have a good memory.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_01]: You have to have a really good memory, because I think other than that, I think I wouldn't, I think I could do it.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: But I just don't have the memory to like remember being in wrong.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think it's that.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_03]: Memory is not even a thing because it's like,
- 48:56[SPEAKER_03]: By the time you've heard it on Netflix, they've done that joke 10,000 times.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_03]: 10,000 times, over and over again, where it's not even a memory thing anymore.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they do it, you do it literally every night, the same joke, and then you just tweaking it slowly.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_03]: I'm telling you, it's better.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_03]: And if it's a good joke, it's not something you have to remember, it's like, that's what you would say nationally anyway.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: But even at 50, you think I've got a shot at this?
- 49:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think I wouldn't even put so much back here, just try it.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, look, this is why I joke around about it.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_01]: Is because I think when you think about a sport, like a basketball thing, or you know, you want to be a pro athlete and something, you cross-trained, right?
- 49:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like if you're in basketball, then you run.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not training as a podcaster.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_01]: It only benefits me if I've had stand up background, right?
- 49:52[SPEAKER_03]: That's true.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I think about that all the time.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_03]: Stand up, we're improv.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_03]: Improv, yeah, yeah, why not?
- 49:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think about it all the time, all the time.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_03]: But did you just... Have you ever tried to open a mic?
- 50:02[SPEAKER_01]: Never.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk to all of the comedians like Fred, Alex, all these guys, you know.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh man.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: All the time, but I'm like scared, I'm just scared.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: And then I told to myself, 20, 26 was a year that I would get up and do it.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: Just yeah, just to see what happens.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_03]: It's probably not gonna be good, but yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_03]: Also, no one is good.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_03]: Right, right, right.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_03]: If you go to Omega, they're all bad.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_03]: So it's fine.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_03]: Like I'm telling you, after you go to an open mic and you see them, and you're like, yeah, I can do that bad.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, right.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_03]: I can keep the line consistent.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_03]: won't be crazy.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_03]: And even if it is, is like, everyone's like, yeah, no one will be okay.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_01]: And getting the butterflies out is like important because sometimes when I go on stage to host the show or whatever, sometimes that butterflies, and sometimes I don't feel free enough like in a podcast, right?
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: So say whatever I want to be.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_01]: But I think if you're doing open mics enough, all that becomes second nature and you just become you.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, open mics.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_03]: I don't even know if I got better, I stand up.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes I go to an open mic and I'm like, did I get worse?
- 51:09[SPEAKER_03]: Cause it's like, it's all comedians that watch.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_03]: And comedians have a very different sense of humor than a normal crowd.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_03]: But I wouldn't say the, of my from me, I use it more of like a, I just need to get these words out and just say them in order for me to figure out how to say them.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_03]: And also you meet people and just kind of like the hang
- 51:33[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think, and then the show is once you have a tight 10 minutes or whatever, you can kind of be more free because you know I have these really good jokes.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_03]: I can fall back on and put a little bit of that kind of thing.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_01]: The future of what you do, I feel how like when I'm thinking about how to construct a bit or how to construct some ideas.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_01]: How much AI do you use?
- 52:05[SPEAKER_01]: I don't even say, why?
- 52:08[SPEAKER_03]: I just, I know, I tried it is terrible.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_03]: Why, why is it terrible?
- 52:13[SPEAKER_03]: It's too new or something.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know, I tried to like, all right, I took like this, and it's just like, very basic twist.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_03]: And I guess, I guess, for my thing is like, my thing is so personal, I wanna talk about these these traumatic things
- 52:33[SPEAKER_03]: I talked a lot in the house a lot on kids and stuff and all their parents were doing fuck straight.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_03]: I know it's relatable.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_03]: I know when these people love gambling, I know they love drugs, and it's like a, there's good and bad, but I want to talk about it because no one else is doing it.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_01]: I can't have a, it's like a, but can't AI help you kind of put the structure together?
- 52:53[SPEAKER_03]: and expanded expanded joke or I think AI is good for admin things like make me a schedule to write some jokes or something like that's what I use it more for it for looking for the ideas and stuff because I
- 53:06[SPEAKER_03]: It just sounds a little bit too robotic and not me and I kind of can tell when I watch it comic and maybe use AI, I can tell in how the structure is, it's like it's too blah blah twists.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_03]: Actually it's this, actually it's like this and I'm like,
- 53:26[SPEAKER_03]: That's not unique or you got corrupt it original.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I also I'd say, you know to each of them If it works out for you is great, but yeah, so you got one of the jobs that are going to be probably protected in the future Right because we want to see human beings being authentic right fuck shit kids from Nostalan was
- 53:48[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly, it's one thing.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_03]: It'll be really hard.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like, I mean, who knows, but it'll be really hard for AI to replace this or a comedy in general.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, actually, that's a lie.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_03]: At least, hopefully, I'm big enough where I can, like, like, just license out my voice or something.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_03]: And AI can just do it for me.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_03]: I can just stay home and play, like, call duty or something.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_01]: So let's remind everybody, so April 24th, he's only got three tickets sold.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna crank this up to 300, 400 tickets that we need to get sold at the price.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, from 300, 300.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_03]: That's got to have that's doable.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's doable, we have a month.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think the technique is to let everybody know how dire straight you're in right now, because you probably sold 100 or 200 tickets or you just wanna have more feedback.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_01]: wheel pepper one last thing I and it and you go over it all the time you're getting me but why the hell do you have pepper as a last name?
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: I know why but let's talk about that last thing.
- 54:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I was born by last name Thiu but she's pepper.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and my dad wanted to open up a nail salon.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_03]: but his credit was really bad.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_03]: And maybe he was on drugs, but he was like, oh, if we all had white sounding last names, we would get approved for the business loan.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_03]: And now it worked.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, did work.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I don't know if it worked because of that, but he changed the name and we opened up business.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_03]: So maybe he's coincidence, what?
- 55:26[SPEAKER_01]: That is hilarious, man.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_03]: I think the people don't know, is that he changed all of our names when I was in high school.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_03]: Everybody's name.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_03]: Male family, when I was in high school.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_03]: It wasn't like a, you know, he changed when you were young.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_03]: I was like sophomore in high school and he changed it on a Tuesday.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like wait till spring break or I don't know like like you can't just choose they do and come back Wednesday pepper and then like you know it was like what what happened you know and I'm like oh I dad hates salt all like I'll use make up a different story every time because I don't know how to explain it.
- 56:02[SPEAKER_01]: That's why you're so funny man.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just traumatic.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's a traumatic.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's not like no, take the whole summer off or let's move cities and then you become a wool pepper in another city It's the same place city on a two is like a Tuesday right over the year.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, that's cool year came back.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_03]: They're like pepper.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_03]: I was like yeah, I don't know
- 56:24[SPEAKER_03]: I was the only pretty much one of the few Asians in Phoenix, in my school, it was all black or Hispanic.
- 56:33[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, I was getting clowned like crazy.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_03]: I was fine for my life every day.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_03]: They were just roasting me.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_03]: So I had to learn how to say shit back.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_03]: Otherwise, I'm just going to get bullied.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like one of the few Asians there.
- 56:47[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm like, I'm not going to be like those.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_03]: You know, there was like a few Asians that were like just kind of like quiet and didn't really I'm like no, I'm not I'm gonna be the opposite I'm gonna talk to my shit But you know, you could have had a name like will deal.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that That that flows too, but I think I guess it's will pepper from now on.
- 57:04[SPEAKER_01]: I guess oh, it's a great great story man Well, thank you so much for coming on today, man.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_01]: I really appreciate you.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_01]: Well, he here dude.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for having me.

- 57:18[SPEAKER_03]: I love it.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_03]: I love it.
