- 3:08Speaker 3: you can speak my friend.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Thank you, David.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I appreciate that you're welcome. John Thanks for being here,
- 3:14Speaker 3: Thanks for being.
- 3:14Speaker 6: I've been called Johnson's I was in trouble.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Get a closer to that microphone. I act like you've
- 3:18Speaker 3: been here before.
- 3:18Speaker 6: I haven't been called Johns since I was in trouble.
- 3:20Speaker 3: When I was I was going to say, when you're where, well,
- 3:22Speaker 3: you know you started acodom me, David.
- 3:24Speaker 2: That is correct, So there you go.
- 3:25Speaker 3: All right, I'm going to start on a serious note
- 3:29Speaker 3: and then we'll get into some more serious things. But
- 3:31Speaker 3: because it's you and me, sometimes we kind of you're offload.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I do want to talk about Kenny Bass. Kinny Bass
- 3:35Speaker 3: quurse passed away two nights ago, sixty two of cancer.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Your your recollections with Kenny Bass.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Yeah, you asked me what was on my mind, and
- 3:43Speaker 5: I think we both sort of decided that Kenny was
- 3:44Speaker 5: kind of on our mind this morning. And you know,
- 3:47Speaker 5: I spent eight years as the auditor and Kenny for
- 3:50Speaker 5: all eight of those years was the investigative reporter for
- 3:52Speaker 5: the news station right, and so Kenny and I spent
- 3:55Speaker 5: a lot of time together. From the Supreme Court impeachments
- 3:59Speaker 5: through the end of my term as auditor. He was
- 4:04Speaker 5: really the pre eminent investigative reporter around here. And Kenny
- 4:07Speaker 5: did things the right way. He researched his stories, he
- 4:10Speaker 5: got first hand sources, and when Kenny wrote something or
- 4:14Speaker 5: said something, there was there was meaning behind it, and
- 4:17Speaker 5: he really set a standard for journalists in the area here.
- 4:20Speaker 6: But when you look at all the national awards.
- 4:22Speaker 5: And things that he won, he was respected and set
- 4:25Speaker 5: the same sort of standard nationwide. And the world would
- 4:29Speaker 5: be a lot better if Kenny was still here, and
- 4:30Speaker 5: the world would be a lot better if all of
- 4:32Speaker 5: our journalists had the same compassion and intelligence and ethics
- 4:37Speaker 5: that Kenny had. And so he's going to be really
- 4:39Speaker 5: really missed around the Capitol and in my office.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And the public viewing. We learned yesterday on the show
- 4:45Speaker 3: yesterday mentioned News Midday will be at the Clay Center
- 4:48Speaker 3: on Friday evening.
- 4:49Speaker 5: I can't imagine that Kenny would have wanted that Kenny
- 4:52Speaker 5: Kenny to be publicly viewed all that.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you never know, but but you know, and a
- 4:57Speaker 3: lot of people didn't know this about Kenny because he
- 4:59Speaker 3: only saw the guy on television.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Now.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I think probably those of us in the Kanaw Valley did,
- 5:03Speaker 3: but maybe elsewhere did not. He was a big lover
- 5:05Speaker 3: of the arts involved with you know, the various productions, plays,
- 5:10Speaker 3: dinner theaters, animal lover did all that stuff.
- 5:13Speaker 5: He was a great actor and and and Kenny also
- 5:15Speaker 5: got married a little bit later in life and just
- 5:17Speaker 5: absolutely loved is his bride and his family.
- 5:20Speaker 6: And you know, he was pretty private about that stuff.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Kenny was.
- 5:24Speaker 6: Kenny was an.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Awesome husband and an awesome person and a great dad
- 5:27Speaker 5: to his to his children that he sort of got
- 5:30Speaker 5: later in life.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Turned to General J. B. Mccusky's Here of a Dave
- 5:32Speaker 3: Allen Show and Fine Eddielie brought to you apart by
- 5:34Speaker 3: Love Healthy West Virginia presented by wv you Medicus one,
- 5:37Speaker 3: a podcast promoting healthier lifestyles going to be on the state.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Check have of latest episodes wv metronws dot com and
- 5:43Speaker 3: of the podcast menu. I was kind of keeping an
- 5:45Speaker 3: eye on the national news here with everything going on.
- 5:48Speaker 3: It seems that the biggest, biggest story of the last
- 5:50Speaker 3: couple of days has has been this uh reno that
- 5:57Speaker 3: the President is doing uh to the White House. A
- 6:00Speaker 3: lot of people are upset about it. Some people are not.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Is there any truth in the room that you're gonna
- 6:04Speaker 3: be doing a similar thing at the Capitol?
- 6:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:06Speaker 5: So if you've seen outside the Capitol, there's a lot
- 6:08Speaker 5: of back hoes and jack hammering going on. And so
- 6:11Speaker 5: the mccusky family wing, which will be a ballroom and
- 6:14Speaker 5: also a golf simulator, will be added right on the
- 6:18Speaker 5: river side to make sure that the Capitol has all
- 6:20Speaker 5: the facilities that somebody needs.
- 6:22Speaker 3: You probably need to follow that up by saying you're joking.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I am joking because this is where we live right now.
- 6:28Speaker 4: JB.
- 6:28Speaker 5: You know that if Randall Reid Smith is listening, I'm
- 6:30Speaker 5: sorry Randall for giving you a heart attack.
- 6:33Speaker 3: We were kidding. What do you make of all that?
- 6:35Speaker 3: In all seriousness, then we'll get to state issues.
- 6:37Speaker 6: Heres.
- 6:38Speaker 5: I mean, at the end of the day, I think
- 6:40Speaker 5: people the twenty four hour news cycle and everybody is
- 6:43Speaker 5: just conditioned to try to be mad about something all
- 6:46Speaker 5: the time. And you know, it's the White House. It
- 6:49Speaker 5: was built from whole cloth, like not that long ago.
- 6:53Speaker 5: And so the idea that this president thinks that that
- 6:56Speaker 5: building should have a should have a ballroom in it, fine,
- 6:59Speaker 5: I mean, whether you like it or don't.
- 7:00Speaker 6: Like it, it just isn't that big of a deal.
- 7:03Speaker 3: And I'm kind of right there with you. And I've
- 7:04Speaker 3: been somebody that's not always been on board with this
- 7:06Speaker 3: president the administration, but that's just kind of where I am.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I mean, and you look back at all these folks
- 7:11Speaker 3: that all these other presidents that have done all these
- 7:13Speaker 3: things to it. I mean, you know, Truman basically redid
- 7:16Speaker 3: the White House, and first Ladies have done it, and
- 7:19Speaker 3: Obama put in a basketball court.
- 7:21Speaker 6: And they used to have a swimming pool. It's had
- 7:23Speaker 6: a golf hole out there.
- 7:24Speaker 5: I mean, and I guess if a Democrat, God forbid,
- 7:28Speaker 5: wins presidency next time, they won't use the ballroom.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I mean, it's going to say. It's not like they
- 7:31Speaker 3: can take it with them. You're not going to put
- 7:33Speaker 3: it in a mobile home.
- 7:35Speaker 5: And you have to assume that the next president is
- 7:37Speaker 5: going to go in there and be like, oh, this
- 7:38Speaker 5: ballroom is actually pretty sweet and it's great that I
- 7:40Speaker 5: don't have to go all over God's creation to have
- 7:42Speaker 5: these state dinners, and you know, and then everyone will
- 7:45Speaker 5: forget about it when the first time they have an
- 7:47Speaker 5: event with a Democrat in that ballroom, everyone will say, Oh,
- 7:50Speaker 5: this ballroom's really nice.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, What else is on your mind? What
- 7:53Speaker 3: are you working on these days?
- 7:54Speaker 6: A lot of stuff.
- 7:56Speaker 5: You know, we've talked about this before, but we have
- 7:58Speaker 5: the BPGA case coming up at this Supreme Court that's
- 8:00Speaker 5: taken up a whole lot of our energy. We have
- 8:03Speaker 5: some really interesting cases coming up involving data privacy and
- 8:07Speaker 5: child safety as it relates to the ways that kids
- 8:11Speaker 5: and and people that pray on children interact with them online.
- 8:14Speaker 5: I think in the coming months we're gonna have some
- 8:17Speaker 5: really exciting announcements about some actions we're taken against those folks.
- 8:21Speaker 5: And you know, just in general, we have a government
- 8:24Speaker 5: shutdown going on right now, and that takes up a
- 8:26Speaker 5: lot of oxygen everywhere that we go, and you know,
- 8:30Speaker 5: everybody wants to sort of figure out why it's happening.
- 8:33Speaker 5: And I think the answer is usually right right underneath
- 8:36Speaker 5: everybody's nose, and that's that Congress has a really hard
- 8:38Speaker 5: time getting along.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Is there any impact as it trickles down to your
- 8:44Speaker 3: office from the from a federal government show.
- 8:46Speaker 6: Yeah, there would be.
- 8:46Speaker 5: We have a pretty significant interaction with the Medicaid system
- 8:50Speaker 5: because we run the Medicaid Fraud Unit. But you know,
- 8:52Speaker 5: our grants are are are annual, so not necessarily. I
- 8:58Speaker 5: think it's time for people that are it's funny to
- 9:02Speaker 5: me that that there's a whole group of people that
- 9:04Speaker 5: vote to close the government down and then blame the
- 9:06Speaker 5: people that voted for keeping it open for shutting it down.
- 9:09Speaker 5: It's time for those who are voting no to vote
- 9:11Speaker 5: yes and figure out a more productive way for them
- 9:14Speaker 5: to try to make their point. And that's probably going
- 9:17Speaker 5: to come at the ballot box as it's supposed to.
- 9:19Speaker 3: And I mean, any idea from you, any gases to
- 9:23Speaker 3: when when the whole thing comes to an end, you know.
- 9:25Speaker 6: The longer it goes, the longer it can go, right.
- 9:27Speaker 5: And I think we had the number two Democrat in
- 9:30Speaker 5: Congress yesterday saying that she is she understands that this
- 9:35Speaker 5: is causing enormous consternation to American families and the most vulnerable.
- 9:39Speaker 5: And I think her exact quote was that our that's
- 9:42Speaker 5: our biggest leverage point and so the people who are
- 9:45Speaker 5: voting no, I think understand what they're doing, uh, and
- 9:49Speaker 5: they are willing to cause that level of pain in
- 9:51Speaker 5: order to achieve the non budgetary goals that they have
- 9:55Speaker 5: that really need to be dealt with in in individual bills.
- 9:59Speaker 5: And I think when you look at the totality of
- 10:02Speaker 5: what Congress does, they've become, you know, sort of a
- 10:05Speaker 5: biennial budget convention. And it is difficult to legislate when
- 10:11Speaker 5: every single piece of legislation has five thousand topics in it.
- 10:15Speaker 5: And if you look at our state legislature, one of
- 10:17Speaker 5: the really great rules that we have as the single
- 10:19Speaker 5: issue rule. And what that does is it prevents this
- 10:21Speaker 5: problem where everybody is voting on one thing. Right, Are
- 10:25Speaker 5: we going to change this tax? Are we going to
- 10:27Speaker 5: allow this behavior? Are we going to change this regulation?
- 10:30Speaker 5: Instead of lumping them all together so that everyone can
- 10:33Speaker 5: find something they like and everyone can find something they
- 10:35Speaker 5: don't like, they legislate on individual issues. And if I
- 10:39Speaker 5: think if our United States Congress were to move towards
- 10:42Speaker 5: that sort of concept, a lot of these problems would
- 10:44Speaker 5: be would be mitigated.
- 10:46Speaker 3: If you were in DC, if you were in the
- 10:48Speaker 3: seat of Senator Capito, or Senator Justice or.
- 10:52Speaker 6: Which more or will not be.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Okay, Well, I understand that, I understanding, But if you
- 10:57Speaker 3: were to be in Washington, what would you be doing
- 11:00Speaker 3: right now?
- 11:01Speaker 6: What would I be doing?
- 11:03Speaker 5: I would be doing every single thing that I could
- 11:07Speaker 5: to convince people voting to shut the government down that
- 11:11Speaker 5: there is a pathway for the issues that they find
- 11:14Speaker 5: important on the other side of voting to reopen the government.
- 11:17Speaker 5: And it's about building trust, and it's about building friendships,
- 11:20Speaker 5: and it's about building an understanding that all of us
- 11:24Speaker 5: are here to do a job, and the job is
- 11:26Speaker 5: to run the federal government. And when one part of
- 11:30Speaker 5: the government isn't completing that task, the rest of the
- 11:33Speaker 5: government shuts down. And so I think you have to
- 11:36Speaker 5: start convincing your colleagues that this idea that us not
- 11:43Speaker 5: performing our most fundamental task is causing pain to American
- 11:46Speaker 5: citizens is not appropriate. And you know, there's just a
- 11:52Speaker 5: baseline level of achievement that has to happen in passing
- 11:55Speaker 5: a budget is one of them.
- 11:56Speaker 3: And I think what happens too and can we're talking
- 11:58Speaker 3: to atourney Attorney General mccusky. I think what happens to
- 12:01Speaker 3: people as just the kind of creatures we are. We're
- 12:05Speaker 3: always worried about, well, what's it going to do to me,
- 12:08Speaker 3: no matter whether it's this or whatever. And maybe right now,
- 12:11Speaker 3: when you start looking at the federal government, you think, well,
- 12:14Speaker 3: you know, this doesn't impact me. I get up and
- 12:16Speaker 3: I go to work every day. And it's a fair point.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I completely get that. But however, the longer this thing goes,
- 12:20Speaker 3: it is going to impact everyone involved. And if you
- 12:24Speaker 3: right now we're not seeing a lot of issues in
- 12:27Speaker 3: West Virginia as far as air travel and stuff like that,
- 12:30Speaker 3: we are going to It's going to happen eventually. I've
- 12:33Speaker 3: got some friends that plan on a trip to Texas
- 12:37Speaker 3: for Thanksgiving and they were saying, well, we may be
- 12:39Speaker 3: looking at running a van and hauling the family down there, because.
- 12:42Speaker 6: I striving to Texas before, and that's a long drive.
- 12:44Speaker 3: It is a long drive. I've never done it, but
- 12:46Speaker 3: I'm fully aware that it probably is. I think a
- 12:49Speaker 3: lot of times people will see how does this affect me,
- 12:52Speaker 3: and maybe maybe they'll react and care a little bit
- 12:55Speaker 3: more then yeah.
- 12:55Speaker 5: And I think on the other side of that, though,
- 12:57Speaker 5: is that the power of incumbency is so strong in
- 13:00Speaker 5: Congress that that we have this system, the situation where
- 13:03Speaker 5: everyone likes their congressman, but they hate Congress.
- 13:06Speaker 6: And so when you then go to.
- 13:08Speaker 5: The ballot bruth you say, well, my person was doing
- 13:11Speaker 5: a great job, but I hate all the rest of them, right,
- 13:14Speaker 5: And so then the changes don't don't end up happening,
- 13:17Speaker 5: and we end up with people who are there for
- 13:18Speaker 5: a very, very long time. And you know, that used
- 13:21Speaker 5: to be a situation where everyone had these wonderful relationships
- 13:24Speaker 5: with each other. There were these long term friendships in Congress,
- 13:26Speaker 5: and a lot of those internal relationships, especially across party lines,
- 13:30Speaker 5: appear to have deteriorated.
- 13:31Speaker 3: All Right, what's on the on the agenda the next
- 13:34Speaker 3: couple of weeks for you for your office?
- 13:36Speaker 5: Yeah, so I am speaking at a group called America's
- 13:40Speaker 5: Power in d C. In a couple of weeks, and
- 13:42Speaker 5: they're the pre eminent coal oriented power plant advocacy group.
- 13:48Speaker 5: I have a speech at a place called the Federalist Society,
- 13:50Speaker 5: which is a rule of law group, and we're talking
- 13:53Speaker 5: about all of the incredible things that our office is
- 13:55Speaker 5: doing on the energy front. I have just an enormous
- 14:01Speaker 5: amount of work to do in the office, so we
- 14:03Speaker 5: have to we have a case that involves drug prices.
- 14:06Speaker 5: It's something called three point forty B that we're working
- 14:08Speaker 5: really hard on. We're spending a lot of time on
- 14:10Speaker 5: these vaccine cases and preparing, like I said before, for
- 14:15Speaker 5: a United States Supreme Court argument.
- 14:16Speaker 6: Is no small task.
- 14:18Speaker 3: What goes into that, what goes into that at the
- 14:21Speaker 3: kitchen table is night with the index cards.
- 14:23Speaker 5: Yeah, it would, yeah, kind of. It's a little bit
- 14:27Speaker 5: more involved than that.
- 14:28Speaker 3: There's just about two hundred people doing that with you.
- 14:30Speaker 5: It's mostly about research and then it's about practice. So
- 14:34Speaker 5: we do these things called moot courts where we find
- 14:36Speaker 5: really really good lawyers from all around the country who
- 14:38Speaker 5: will act as the Supreme Court justices and then find
- 14:41Speaker 5: somebody to act as the lawyer on the other side.
- 14:43Speaker 5: And so you practice the arguments so that when you
- 14:46Speaker 5: get into the actual room in the Supreme Court, you're
- 14:50Speaker 5: as prepared as you can be for what are the
- 14:51Speaker 5: potential questions and explanations that you have to give based
- 14:56Speaker 5: on the arguments that you've made in your written briefing.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Do you have you on the show?
- 15:01Speaker 4: Sir?
- 15:01Speaker 3: You like this? You liking this weather?
- 15:03Speaker 6: This is a great job. I love I love doing
- 15:05Speaker 6: this job.
- 15:05Speaker 3: What about the weather. You like the weather? The weather's
- 15:08Speaker 3: the weather is I love I've always said this long,
- 15:11Speaker 3: this time of year, I love it all.
- 15:12Speaker 5: So I am glad that it's cooled off a little bit.
- 15:14Speaker 5: I love the four seasons. I don't the Indian summer
- 15:17Speaker 5: gets a little hard.
- 15:17Speaker 3: As as do Attorney General JM. McCuskey. Always a pleasure

- 18:39Speaker 3: Pecozy joined us now. Bill, Good morning, Welcome to the show.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Good morning, Thanks for having me, Thanks.
- 18:44Speaker 4: For being here.
- 18:44Speaker 3: I want to talk about how you got in to
- 18:46Speaker 3: this whole promotions business. To begin with, It's a wild,
- 18:49Speaker 3: wild world and yours started with the circus.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Talk about it well, actually, my grandfather, which scepting my
- 18:57Speaker 4: grandfather was the biggest promote in the United States back
- 19:01Speaker 4: in the twenties and thirties, and he owned a big
- 19:04Speaker 4: circus in a carnival and he had to rent forty
- 19:07Speaker 4: four railroad cars to travel with all his equipment around
- 19:10Speaker 4: the United States to the shows. My mother was part
- 19:14Speaker 4: of that, and she was a vaudeville star. A lot
- 19:18Speaker 4: of people remember Judy Garland, which became a big star
- 19:21Speaker 4: during that time, and she was my mother's warm up
- 19:24Speaker 4: act and they both traveled with Bob Hope during the
- 19:27Speaker 4: USO shows us during the World War Two. So I
- 19:32Speaker 4: grew up in the show business ever since. I was
- 19:35Speaker 4: a kid on the West Side.
- 19:37Speaker 3: And so I guess if your parents threatened you and
- 19:39Speaker 3: said we're going to send you off to the circus,
- 19:41Speaker 3: it was a real possibility for you.
- 19:43Speaker 4: Right, absolutely, absolutely so every summer I was never home.
- 19:49Speaker 4: I was born and raised on the West Side, and
- 19:51Speaker 4: my mother and father owned a carnival and we traveled
- 19:53Speaker 4: throughout the state of West Virginia, mostly Ohio and Kentucky,
- 19:57Speaker 4: and went to school at alsin Catholic High school and
- 20:04Speaker 4: didn't know what my direction in life was. When I
- 20:06Speaker 4: was a senior, I didn't know what I wanted to do.
- 20:08Speaker 4: I played football at West Virginia State and got into
- 20:12Speaker 4: a reconditioning shop business. I don't know how I came
- 20:15Speaker 4: up with that idea, but I was the first in
- 20:17Speaker 4: West Virginia to do that. And what that means is
- 20:20Speaker 4: I would take a used car, use truck from a
- 20:23Speaker 4: car dealer, take it to my shop and clean it,
- 20:27Speaker 4: steam clean the engine, blax, a complete detail, you know,
- 20:31Speaker 4: detail shop exactly. And I was making a lot of
- 20:34Speaker 4: money and I quit college, and of course, three years later,
- 20:39Speaker 4: excuse me, three months later, after I dropped out of college,
- 20:41Speaker 4: I got drafted and spent a year in Vietnam as
- 20:45Speaker 4: a veteran and so really involved in helping veterans here
- 20:50Speaker 4: in West Virginia. I do that without announcing it too much.
- 20:55Speaker 4: And then from there I bought my first neighborhood bar,
- 20:58Speaker 4: the Anchor over on West Side, and it just like
- 21:02Speaker 4: snowballed into other clubs and I bought the old Customer Theater,
- 21:05Speaker 4: which I used to pay a quarter to go to
- 21:08Speaker 4: when I was a kid. And I remember one day
- 21:11Speaker 4: in the two way mirror office that I had, saying,
- 21:14Speaker 4: I can't believe that I bought this theater after going
- 21:17Speaker 4: to it, you know. So it just seems like God
- 21:21Speaker 4: blessed me and almost everything I did turned to gold.
- 21:24Speaker 4: And I used how I got in a promotion business
- 21:27Speaker 4: to answer your question is, while I was that part
- 21:30Speaker 4: of my life, I started getting phone calls for people
- 21:33Speaker 4: wanting to book bands, and I would tell them, I says,
- 21:37Speaker 4: I don't book bands, I hire them, you know at
- 21:40Speaker 4: Capital City Janbury, which I turned the theater into. Well,
- 21:44Speaker 4: actually I bought it from Jim Cunningham. He started it
- 21:46Speaker 4: and I bought it from him. Every Friday night was
- 21:49Speaker 4: top bluegrass axe from around the country, and every Saturday
- 21:52Speaker 4: night was country artists. And I had a lot of
- 21:55Speaker 4: people from he Hall and whoever whoever. I booked them.
- 22:00Speaker 4: And so I went to Ned Guthrie, who was the
- 22:04Speaker 4: president of the local Musicians Union here in Charleston, and
- 22:10Speaker 4: I asked myself, I'm getting a lot of calls I'm
- 22:12Speaker 4: booking bands. How can I get into that? He says,
- 22:15Speaker 4: What's very easy. You become a talent agency and you
- 22:18Speaker 4: signed the bands up as under exclusive contract and you'll
- 22:22Speaker 4: make a percentage on every time they play. That's what
- 22:25Speaker 4: I did, and I signed up about eighty two bands
- 22:28Speaker 4: and was making a lot of money and being in
- 22:30Speaker 4: the club business. From there, I bought another club, and
- 22:33Speaker 4: then I bought the King's Inn over on Patrick Street,
- 22:38Speaker 4: and I came up with a wild idea of having
- 22:42Speaker 4: Ladies Night on Tuesday night. And I thought, well, wherever
- 22:45Speaker 4: the ladies are, the mental come and we could get
- 22:48Speaker 4: fourteen hundred people in this place. And I sponsored eight
- 22:52Speaker 4: bowling teams over right across the street at the Bowling Alley,
- 22:56Speaker 4: and bands six nights a week. And something I did
- 23:00Speaker 4: never get away with nowadays is Coder Tile on Friday
- 23:05Speaker 4: and Saturday night. No blue jeans and no tennis shoes
- 23:08Speaker 4: anytime to get in. And of course I had the
- 23:11Speaker 4: monopoly on the club business during that time. The only
- 23:15Speaker 4: competition I had, and really wasn't a competition, it was
- 23:18Speaker 4: the growing twenties over on Hell Street. So that's how
- 23:22Speaker 4: my life started. And then I started promoting shows at
- 23:26Speaker 4: the theater that I owned, and then each stepped with
- 23:30Speaker 4: further and bigger ax from Kentucky Headhunters to Confederate Railroad,
- 23:37Speaker 4: all the Charlie Rich you name it. I've done over
- 23:41Speaker 4: five hundred major shows in the last fifty years. So
- 23:44Speaker 4: that's how I started in the promotion business.
- 23:46Speaker 3: And eventually you kind of transition because you know, and
- 23:49Speaker 3: we'll talk about your book in a moment, Bill, but
- 23:50Speaker 3: I know you had relationships with people like Muhammad Ali
- 23:53Speaker 3: and Pete Rose that you brought to town. Talk about
- 23:55Speaker 3: some of those.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Yes, Well, how Muhammad Ali came out was Jerry, which
- 24:03Speaker 4: was a sergeant at the Charleston Police Department. They sponsored
- 24:07Speaker 4: the Golden Gloves here at Charleston, and he says, Bill,
- 24:10Speaker 4: it's a dying and we need a big promotion this
- 24:13Speaker 4: year to keep it above water. So I came up
- 24:18Speaker 4: with the idea of what do I need to do
- 24:21Speaker 4: to bring a lot of people to the Civic Center
- 24:24Speaker 4: and I I went out on a limb and said, well,
- 24:28Speaker 4: I'm going to bring Muhammad Ali here and everything everybody
- 24:34Speaker 4: thought I was crazy. I locked him in, told him
- 24:38Speaker 4: that we needed help here, and I went to WHS
- 24:45Speaker 4: this is a funny story about your station and John
- 24:47Speaker 4: Dickens sheets, which him and I became very good friends.
- 24:50Speaker 4: I love John. I said, Hey, how would you like
- 24:54Speaker 4: to sponsor Muhammad Ali? Being at the Golden Gloves. He says, well,
- 24:58Speaker 4: you're crazy. He says, you can't bring my Mohammad Ali here.
- 25:01Speaker 4: I said, John, have I ever misled you? He says,
- 25:05Speaker 4: I just don't believe you. So I said, Okay, you're
- 25:08Speaker 4: gonna will You're gonna be sorry. And of course I
- 25:10Speaker 4: did bring Muhammad al here Ali to the gold in
- 25:13Speaker 4: one year was this? Uh, this was probably eighty I'm
- 25:18Speaker 4: gonna say eighty six. Get a little older some of
- 25:21Speaker 4: my mind.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Yees I understood, understood eighty six. Okay, we'll go with that.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Yeah and uh. And ever since then, every time John
- 25:31Speaker 4: Dickens see the Muhammed Ali's name would come up, all
- 25:35Speaker 4: he would do is bragg on Bill Bercoe's and listen,
- 25:37Speaker 4: he says, I'll never doubt Bill because he ever again,
- 25:39Speaker 4: if he tells you something, you can take it to
- 25:41Speaker 4: the bank.
- 25:42Speaker 9: Uh.
- 25:43Speaker 4: And I appreciate that with John. But so Ali came in.
- 25:47Speaker 4: And then the next thing I know, I get a
- 25:49Speaker 4: call from Dutch Miller in Huntington and he was a
- 25:53Speaker 4: big backer of the Golden Gloves with his car dealer
- 25:57Speaker 4: who was a big a fight fan. And he called me.
- 26:03Speaker 4: He says, listen, can you bring Ali down to Huntington
- 26:07Speaker 4: for the Golden Gloves like you did Charleston. And of
- 26:10Speaker 4: course I raised over thirty thousand dollars went to the
- 26:14Speaker 4: Golden Gloves, and I says, okay. So I met with
- 26:18Speaker 4: mister Miller and I says, I think we have a
- 26:21Speaker 4: good chance. So, making a long story short, I set
- 26:24Speaker 4: up a big one hundred dollars plate dinner fundraiser for
- 26:28Speaker 4: the Little Gloves and I had Ali locked in. And
- 26:33Speaker 4: not too long after that before I brought Ali down,
- 26:37Speaker 4: and this event happened. Buster Douglas knocked out Tyson in Japan, Tokyo,
- 26:44Speaker 4: and I got the bright idea, well, he's in Columbus.
- 26:49Speaker 4: I'll give him a call see if he'll could come over.
- 26:52Speaker 4: And I called and couldn't get him to the phone.
- 26:55Speaker 4: So the next day I called him again. I said, listen,
- 26:58Speaker 4: I have Muhammad Ali here and he wants to talk
- 27:00Speaker 4: to Buster. And uh, And I was sit fibbling a
- 27:05Speaker 4: little bit. I'm just a little bit.
- 27:07Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 4: You know, my mother always taught me, you know, it's
- 27:09Speaker 4: still a good to lie. But if you're going to lie,
- 27:11Speaker 4: tell a little phib that doesn't hurt anybody. I said, okay, Mom,
- 27:16Speaker 4: I'll remember that. So Buster got on the phone. I says,
- 27:19Speaker 4: I only be right back. I says, but he wants
- 27:22Speaker 4: you to come to the Golden Gloves. We'll raise a
- 27:24Speaker 4: lot of money. I says, uh uh. He says, well
- 27:27Speaker 4: you will, you come and get me. I'll send I'll
- 27:29Speaker 4: send a private jet over and get you. So, to
- 27:32Speaker 4: make a long story short, we got Buster, Douglas and
- 27:35Speaker 4: Ili in Huntington. It was a big, big event, a
- 27:39Speaker 4: lot of money to the Golden Gloves.
- 27:41Speaker 3: And uh so, what kind of guy was only away
- 27:44Speaker 3: from the crowd.
- 27:45Speaker 4: I was going to get into that. We we we
- 27:47Speaker 4: became such good friends that I would bring him in.
- 27:52Speaker 4: He said, Bill, whatever you want me to do. He
- 27:54Speaker 4: loved chocolate, chocolate cake, and we got to be so many.
- 27:58Speaker 4: He a lot of times with fly in and stay
- 28:01Speaker 4: at my house for two or three days. He loved
- 28:02Speaker 4: the state of West Virginia. A lot of stories in
- 28:05Speaker 4: my book about Ali and Tonny Hauntsecker, which was his
- 28:08Speaker 4: first professional opponent. That he would never charge me for
- 28:13Speaker 4: appearance of a show that I would do and fly
- 28:16Speaker 4: pay for his own way in. That's how close we became.
- 28:20Speaker 4: But very kind, great humanitarian. I always used to say,
- 28:25Speaker 4: Jimmy Carter probably wasn't the best president that we had,
- 28:29Speaker 4: but he was a great humanitarian. And Ali was the
- 28:31Speaker 4: same thing. And I remember one time we were flying
- 28:35Speaker 4: from here to Atlanta and we were on our way
- 28:38Speaker 4: down to Florida and he wouldn't get on the connecting
- 28:42Speaker 4: flight because there was kids still wanting autographs. I says, Ali,
- 28:46Speaker 4: we're going to miss the flight. He'd go like this
- 28:49Speaker 4: and taking it off. He he loved love kids, and
- 28:55Speaker 4: you know, him and I used to have a lot
- 28:56Speaker 4: of conversations about him not wanting to go into service.
- 29:03Speaker 4: I was going to ask you, have you been a
- 29:04Speaker 4: Vietnam veteran? Was that a sore spot for you? It
- 29:07Speaker 4: was in the beginning, and you know, I couldn't understand
- 29:10Speaker 4: why he wouldn't. I told him, I says Ali. A
- 29:12Speaker 4: lot of times we'd be in my living room and
- 29:14Speaker 4: be baby two o'clock in the morning, just him and I.
- 29:17Speaker 4: I says, Ali, you know, as a veteran, I've got
- 29:19Speaker 4: a bad taste in my mouth about you not going
- 29:22Speaker 4: into the service. I says, you're a big celebrity, You're
- 29:24Speaker 4: not going to go to Vietnam. You're gonna probably do
- 29:26Speaker 4: a tour of different bases and you know, goodwill tour
- 29:30Speaker 4: and promote the United States and the service. Uh So
- 29:35Speaker 4: we did have some back and forth on that, and
- 29:37Speaker 4: then I remember one morning, two in the morning, I say,
- 29:42Speaker 4: you know, all you did was run your mouth. He says,
- 29:44Speaker 4: you don't understand. There was one reason why I ran
- 29:47Speaker 4: my mouth, and he went like this to me, I
- 29:49Speaker 4: just can't see it, but I'm putting my fingers together. Money, money, money,
- 29:53Speaker 4: he says. The more I ran my mouth, more people
- 29:55Speaker 4: wanted to see my ass get kicked. So how did
- 29:58Speaker 4: you go from that into over the last couple of years.
- 30:00Speaker 4: When I first met you, you were doing you know
- 30:02Speaker 4: and still do rib Fast and things of that nature.
- 30:04Speaker 3: So that just kind of goes along with the whole
- 30:05Speaker 3: promotions thing.
- 30:06Speaker 4: I guess, right, Well, yeah, I've been told by my
- 30:11Speaker 4: agent and other people in the promotion business. You know,
- 30:15Speaker 4: you had Don King and Bob Aaron doing boxing. They're
- 30:18Speaker 4: noted for that, that's what they do. You have Jim
- 30:22Speaker 4: McMahon that does the rastling mince mcman. Yeah. Uh yeah,
- 30:28Speaker 4: it sounds like I'm bragging. I'm just stating the facts,
- 30:30Speaker 4: you know. I did boxing, I've done wrastling, I've done
- 30:33Speaker 4: arch and crafts. I've done sports shows, I've done music concerts.
- 30:37Speaker 4: You name the type of promotion and I've done it,
- 30:41Speaker 4: which I'm very proud of. So how the book came
- 30:44Speaker 4: about is my daughter, So Dad, you ought to you
- 30:49Speaker 4: want to write a book about this? And that's how
- 30:52Speaker 4: that got started. Where will the book be available? Is
- 30:54Speaker 4: it out now or the book is I'm holding it
- 30:57Speaker 4: in my hand as you can see it. We're gonna
- 30:59Speaker 4: I'm gonna be featured author of Headline Books the publishing
- 31:04Speaker 4: company at the West Virginia Book Show at the Charleston
- 31:07Speaker 4: Civic Center this Saturday, and I'll be they can get
- 31:10Speaker 4: the book there and I'll be signing the book from
- 31:14Speaker 4: probably nine thirty to five pm all day on Saturday.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Okay, all right?
- 31:18Speaker 4: And will it be available online or anything? That will
- 31:20Speaker 4: be available on Amazon? And I'm pretty sure my publisher
- 31:23Speaker 4: I talked to her yesterday. I think it'll be ready
- 31:26Speaker 4: to buy online by Saturday on Amazon.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Good Christmas. Give you know Danny Jones, who's another Charleston icon,
- 31:32Speaker 3: has got a book coming out too. Maybe you two
- 31:33Speaker 3: guests could get together and compare books.
- 31:37Speaker 4: I wish I hadn't said that.
- 31:39Speaker 10: I'll leave it at that.
- 31:40Speaker 4: You leave it at that. Yeah, I'm not a big
- 31:43Speaker 4: fan of anymore.
- 31:44Speaker 3: All right, we'll leave it at that, then, yes we will.
- 31:46Speaker 3: But both books will be very interesting reading.
- 31:50Speaker 4: I'm sure he has a very a lot of stories
- 31:52Speaker 4: he's been in Charleston, have had held a lot of
- 31:56Speaker 4: different positions, So I'm supposed to be a good book
- 31:58Speaker 4: to read.
- 31:58Speaker 3: True Confessions of a Bill Pocosey. I appreciate you being here,
- 32:02Speaker 3: good luck with the book, and we'll have you back on.
- 32:03Speaker 3: We'll talk soon because I want to get into some
- 32:04Speaker 3: more of these stories when we have more time.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Well, I appreciate you having me and good Luck and
- 32:09Speaker 4: everybody come down to the Civiction And not only will
- 32:11Speaker 4: I be there, but be a lot of nice authors
- 32:14Speaker 4: and books that you can look at.

- 37:07Speaker 14: it's Called gymnastics For all Gym. Fest it's a it's
- 37:10Speaker 14: an event under THE Usa gymnastics. Umbrella we're very excited about.
- 37:14Speaker 14: That it's ANOTHER Usa Olympic sports governing body that we

- 38:42Speaker 14: See Simone biles In, Charleston West virginia next. Summer but
- 38:45Speaker 14: what we do have is this is the. Pipeline so
- 38:48Speaker 14: when you watch The olympics or you watch gymnastics on
- 38:51Speaker 14: television and you see these athletes Like Simone, biles this
- 38:54Speaker 14: is the pipeline that got them to where they are.
- 38:56Speaker 14: Today so what you're going to see In charleston is
- 38:59Speaker 14: again these kids that are, young that are growing in the.
- 39:02Speaker 14: Sport they're In charleston to compete for a national. Championship

- 39:15Speaker 14: yeah it's a big deal because this is the. Pipeline
- 39:18Speaker 14: and AGAIN i can't stress enough it's another governing body
- 39:21Speaker 14: that we're developing relationships with and when they have a
- 39:24Speaker 14: good experience In, charleston they bring more events to us
- 39:27Speaker 14: and they also tell other sports about what a great host. City,
