- 0:26Music.
- 0:55Hey, everybody, welcome back to another exciting episode of Citizen Frame.
- 0:58I'm your host, Kieran. That's right, I'm back.
- 1:01And I'm with Trevor. I'm with Trevor, unfortunately. Well, what can you do?
- 1:06I just give it up, you know?
- 1:08Yeah. Give us all a break.
- 1:13It's a little late getting this one out. We've had some family stuff and so
- 1:17forth going on and working on.
- 1:19So we're going to give you a
- 1:20double bill of the little Mission Apostles here to get you all caught up.
- 1:24We appreciate your patience with this. got exciting a
- 1:27couple months here with the new the final destination retrospective coming
- 1:30mission impossible retrospective and so on and
- 1:33we're gonna even throw in shark shark month why not
- 1:37why the hell not you know why not there's some good ones out there and apparently
- 1:43apparently tommy was who was either making a shark film called big shark and
- 1:49i don't know whether it's actually being fully produced or it's being released
- 1:53or anything but apparently the trailer I saw the trailer.
- 1:56Yeah, but it was only a trailer. Yeah. It looks terrible. Yeah,
- 2:00I know. Well, what do you expect?
- 2:02Let's cover it. Fuck.
- 2:05Yeah, so we got a lot of retrospective Supermans coming out,
- 2:08but we probably won't get to a retrospective Superman until later in the year, maybe.
- 2:13But we'll see what we can do. But here we are to continue the Missing Apostle
- 2:17retrospective where we left you.
- 2:19Ethan Hunt was chasing after the rabbit's foot.
- 2:23Yes. And Chuck Philip Seymour Hoffman,
- 2:27Under a truck, under a Jeep or something that ran him over.
- 2:31So now he's back, this time with Ghost Protocol. We got Brad Bird behind the helm.
- 2:38Last time we had J.J. Abrams.
- 2:41Brad Bird is a Pixar guy. He's a Pixar director. He did like the Ratatouille
- 2:45and the Incredibles. He's a producer on The Simpsons.
- 2:49And that's where I always recognized his name from. The Simpsons credits.
- 2:53Yeah, he's a very smart guy.
- 2:54And he just seems like a hot choice for him. But you know what? He hit it out of the park.
- 2:57It's one of the best-reviewed films in Tom Cruise's career, 7.4,
- 3:01with a $700 million worldwide intake.
- 3:04So, good on him, but he walked away. He went back to animation,
- 3:08good on him, maybe he just wanted to try something.
- 3:11And a little bit odd, big hit, but he did. He did some screenwriting and went back to Pixar.
- 3:16So, there you go. This is the film that put Tom Cruise on the map when it comes
- 3:20to what he actually does for stunts.
- 3:22He's batshit crazy in this one, and he gets even crazier as we go.
- 3:26Stunts in this one are just wonderful, especially with the tallest building
- 3:30in the world, the Burj Khalifa.
- 3:34And Dubai, yes. And Dubai. Just a wonderful sequence we're about to talk about.
- 3:39Probably one of the best sequences in the entire franchise.
- 3:42So we're just going to jump into this one. This one took a late bloomer,
- 3:45getting going, probably because it was just doing some retooling.
- 3:48And there you go. So there you go. With this one, we've got Ethan,
- 3:51Jane, Benji, Hendrix, Winstrom, Leonid.
- 3:58Leonid, Briege, Sabine, Hannaway, and Luther. And a cameo by Tom Wilkinson.
- 4:05Yes, that means we got Fing Rhames, Josh Holloway, Leah Shadul,
- 4:08Michael Nyquist, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Wimmer, Paula Patton, and of course the man himself, Tommy!
- 4:14Yes, I do have to say, I don't know the reasons why, but watching this,
- 4:19I was disappointed that Fing Rhames is barely in it, apart from Makami at the end?
- 4:24It was because of, it was delayed a lot, this film.
- 4:30And so, and unfortunately he couldn't make the final cut.
- 4:34Yeah. So it happens, which we'll discuss that in the next podcast,
- 4:38why some people don't return on this one. Same thing, scheduling conflicts.
- 4:42As you know with the Mission Impossible, there's always some kind of fucking
- 4:45national disaster happening when they can't get them done.
- 4:48So something always gets shifted and moved, causing actors to have to walk away.
- 4:54But they did put him in the very end just because they could say he's in them.
- 4:58Yeah, for continuity reasons, yeah.
- 5:00Yes. Yeah. They had to do that. And that's cool. So I'm glad to see he's the
- 5:05one who's in all of them as well as Tommy.
- 5:08Yeah. I like my openings. I like my openings in The Mission Impossible.
- 5:12We'll jump into the actual opening, but I just like my little opening credits.
- 5:17Now we will get, you know, like the Fuse credit, which we will get.
- 5:21I just like the little, you know, the emblem when they introduced the Skydance,
- 5:24who's been in bed with Tom Cruise for a long time, Bad Robot,
- 5:27which is J.J. Abrams' company.
- 5:29And I just like how he just got the slowly, the heartbeat of the tune.
- 5:34Coming in as it introduces us to a sequence where we meet Hannaway.
- 5:39Well, this is a fun little sequence. It lasts for about, what, a minute?
- 5:44And at the time, Josh Holloway was kind of a get because he was hot from Lost. Yeah.
- 5:51Now, there must have been some editing. I believe there was.
- 5:53He had a bigger part in this with flashbacks with Paula Patton's character because
- 5:58he's barely in it considering where he was as an actor when this came out.
- 6:03I would say that Lost was also created by J.J.
- 6:07Abrams, who produces this. Yeah, exactly.
- 6:11Now, J.J. is here to miss with me. As a director, I like him. As a producer, I don't.
- 6:17I think his stuff, I think, yeah, I think his stuff, I think J.J.
- 6:22Abrams' stuff, a lot of it is all sort of style over substance.
- 6:27I know he doesn't direct this, but I think there's just too much of his stuff
- 6:30that I'm just not happy with, you know, in terms of, you know, being a viewer.
- 6:35Now, I did enjoy his 2009 Star Trek reboot, but whenever you really examine
- 6:41it, and once it just settles, including the sequels that he did and plus the Star Wars stuff,
- 6:47it's all nostalgia be it and essentially,
- 6:51it's all style over substance so much of it
- 6:54sadly yeah I mean you say style over substance
- 6:57it's a fair point his big breakout was he did a Super 8 for Spielberg and that's
- 7:04pretty much a Spielberg you know homage one big film but I'm okay with that
- 7:09he is that kind of a filmmaker but he got it as a producer TV shows he's done
- 7:13Alias and Lost all big hits
- 7:16And he started when he was like 18 or 19.
- 7:19Yes. He wrote a film called Regarding Henry with Harrison Ford.
- 7:23Yes, that's right. And he has a part in it. He's like 19 or something.
- 7:26So I've always respected him as a filmmaker, kind of like M.
- 7:30Night, kind of catapulted at a very young age.
- 7:33And so I've always liked him. I do like his stuff. I'm not going to agree with
- 7:38you there. I like, a lot of people don't like his, what they call it,
- 7:40I think it's called screen flare.
- 7:42Yeah. So in the lighting, in the spaceship, it goes in your eyes as well.
- 7:46And a lot of people don't like the screenplay. I like that. He did it with Star
- 7:50Trek. He did it with Force Awakens.
- 7:51He did it with Mission Impossible 3, which he directed.
- 7:55What I don't like about him, and this is the big one, I do think he puts a lot of effort into his work.
- 8:02Problem is, he has a tendency to quit and leave. Yeah, I mean,
- 8:06I don't know what exactly happened with Star Trek or Star Wars,
- 8:09but to be honest, in retrospect, looking back, yes, you know,
- 8:14the Star Trek and the first Star Wars that he did, you know,
- 8:17on the surface, they're pretty entertaining popcorn films, but if you examine
- 8:22them in any way, they do fall apart in terms of story and, you know,
- 8:26script and all that sort of thing.
- 8:27I mean, yeah, but you're describing a pretty fun time in the movie.
- 8:31You're describing summer blockbuster you know
- 8:34they're they're they're popcorn fun and i'm
- 8:37okay with that but but star trek especially was always much deeper than that
- 8:41including the films i thought he did very i thought star trek's his best work
- 8:46i well i enjoyed i mean uh you know i have to admit i i did enjoy the first
- 8:51one the 2009 one that he did and i think it's the best but probably and probably
- 8:56my favorite of all his work.
- 8:57But, I mean, the sequels were pretty bad that he did. And, you know,
- 9:02the Star Wars stuff as well, especially that recent Rise of Skywalker.
- 9:06But again, he walked away. It wasn't him. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:09So that's my problem. Because that could be damaging. You're losing the original
- 9:14director of the original material. And the same thing with the Star Treks.
- 9:18Yeah. He's producing, but he's producing 12 other things. I don't think he's
- 9:23as hands-on as he should be as a director.
- 9:25He's hands-on. That's why Star Trek is his best work, because he's there directing it.
- 9:29That's why Force Awakens is his best work, because he's there directing.
- 9:33You know, the ones he's just putting his name on seem to fall flat.
- 9:37And that's the problem I have.
- 9:39Okay, far enough. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I mean, at times his directing is very,
- 9:44there's a lot of cheats and stuff, but I mean, that's okay.
- 9:48I mean, far enough, he doesn't direct this, so let's talk about Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol.
- 9:53Yeah, Bad Robot again, I think J.J. eventually leaves his franchise after this. I'll double check it.
- 9:59But yeah, the Hannaway thing. Produces the next one?
- 10:03Yeah, he gets out of it eventually. I can't remember. Who cares?
- 10:06I don't think he, I tell you what though. I think he has rights.
- 10:10I don't think he's at all any say in these franchises anymore.
- 10:14Yeah. There's no way Tom Cruise to let him. It's Tom Cruise and Christopher
- 10:17McGlory's franchise after this film.
- 10:20After this film. Okay, yes. We got the Hannaway thing. And I do like the jumps.
- 10:24I love how he's got those little... I want one of these things.
- 10:26He throws the fucking...
- 10:28USB thing on the ground, he's jumping off a building and it turns into a big
- 10:31fucking safety net or a fucking... Yeah, uh-huh.
- 10:34That's cool. I want one of those. Right.
- 10:38Fucking awesome. You're looking
- 10:39to roll it in the next Mission Impossible film, right? Yeah, fuck it.
- 10:43Tom Cruise comes up to me. He'll go, hey, Kieran, I want to chuck you off a
- 10:46building. I'll be like, yeah. I want to chuck you off a building.
- 10:48Can I be in it? There's a villain.
- 10:50I want to chuck you. I know Tom, can we chuck him off a building?
- 10:53We have no safety net. I want to chuck you off a plane.
- 10:56So do, you know, yeah. with no safety net.
- 11:00So Hannaway escapes with the list, this mystery list, and he gets shot by our
- 11:07girl, the beautiful Lea Chadeau, as she plays Sabine.
- 11:10And he just winks and smiles out. He gets a text message saying assassin.
- 11:14It's a picture of her. He looks up. She kills him.
- 11:17The whole problem with this part, Mission Apostles are smart.
- 11:20Mission Apostle 1 is incredibly smart.
- 11:22Part 3, smart with little dumbed out.
- 11:28We'll get smarter as we go but the one
- 11:31thing i don't this guy's hanaway is supposed to be this brilliant
- 11:34blah blah blah he would have saw her coming a mile away well i
- 11:37think it was more to set her up as a proper threat and also that you know it
- 11:42adds to the drama of an opening but yes technically if he was up to the the
- 11:48standard of secret agent that ethan hunt is he should have been he should have
- 11:53been a bit more clever about it and as much more about him yeah he should have known right away.
- 11:57It should have been handled differently where she's hiding somewhere.
- 12:00Not walking in front of them with a trench coat. She had spy written all over her.
- 12:04Yeah. She even looks like it. She looks like an evil Russian sexy assassin. You know?
- 12:10She also pops up on a couple of the James Bond films. In fact,
- 12:13she marries James Bond in the Daniel Craig ones.
- 12:16That's right. Isn't she hot and heavy with somebody?
- 12:22Michael Fessbender, isn't it? Isn't she with Michael Fessbender or somebody?
- 12:26I don't know i don't know i just know that uh i know her mainly
- 12:29from the last two daniel craig um
- 12:32james bond films she's his wife basically she becomes his wife
- 12:34yeah i know yeah she's uh she she was a specter's daughter or something or something
- 12:41i can't remember yeah bluefell's bluefell's daughter yeah maybe i can't remember
- 12:45but something like that yeah he didn't really a big part no he'll come back
- 12:48in the flashbacks now the old i always like my opening sequence of the mission of possibles.
- 12:52I like it when there's a face pull or some cool escapism.
- 12:57I'm going to have to say I'm not a big fan of the prison break.
- 13:01I thought it was fun, but when I think fun, I think,
- 13:05I don't think Mission Impossible, it's hard to explain what I'm saying.
- 13:10Cheesy fun, I don't expect in a Mission Impossible film.
- 13:13Yeah. I think this opening scene of taking, I think it's Boghan,
- 13:20well, he helps him escape from the Russian prison.
- 13:24And Tom Cruise knows, so I get confused, Benji and Jane are there to get him out.
- 13:31He got busted by Russians for being a spy and that's why he's in prison so he's
- 13:38just sitting there buying his time knowing that Benji and Jane are coming he
- 13:44was supposed to get caught we will find out eventually.
- 13:48Well with it I think it
- 13:51would have worked later on in the film about midway through the
- 13:54film better but for an opening for a Mission Impossible film
- 13:57I want something really big and like
- 14:00you know i don't know tom cruise jumping off
- 14:03a plane which we do eventually get in the next one you know or something really
- 14:07over the top you know to really set things up and then you know the music kicks
- 14:11in you know the mission impossible theme with here it's a bit yeah it's a bit
- 14:14too campy and a bit sort of comedic and silly but also not very grand in scale
- 14:20for a It makes an impossible opening.
- 14:22All right. So the main story is Jane was Hineway's partner and obviously lovers, obviously.
- 14:30Yes. Hineway gets shot, who got the file in the beginning.
- 14:34Now Sabine has the file.
- 14:38So they have to get Tom Cruise out of prison to get the contract killer,
- 14:44which is Sabine, to get the file from her. Yes. Yes, that's correct.
- 14:49Yeah. And then they also have to then, you know, basically stop evil Swedish
- 14:55guy who wants to blow up the world. Hendrix. That's Hendrix. Yeah.
- 15:01So you've got, and these all happen in this.
- 15:04It's kind of fun because in all the Mission Impossible, besides the terrible
- 15:08Mission Impossible 2, you have what they call lists.
- 15:12So the first one, you have the knock list. The third one, you have the rabbit's foot.
- 15:16Yeah. This one, you have the codes for kobold.
- 15:19You've got, and then the next one will have, you know, and then obviously Dead
- 15:22Reckoning has a massive one, but they all have that.
- 15:25There's some kind of code to give away agents, I mean, launch codes,
- 15:29the identity of spies, stuff like that.
- 15:31Yeah, and usually as well, the villain is usually an ex- agent as well,
- 15:36or an ex-IMF agent, so yeah, there are certain sort of ingredients for a Mission
- 15:42Impossible film that work. Try it and test it.
- 15:45Alright, so, pretty much the bad guys are Hendrix, and Sabine.
- 15:50Sabine's just a gun for hire. Yeah. Okay.
- 15:53Then you have Winstrom, who's part of Cobalt. They want to buy it,
- 15:58But Hendricks is working with Cobalt. We think it's just Winstrom,
- 16:03Cobalt, the Cobalt team, Sabine, and then there's Hendricks.
- 16:06Hendricks is actually working with Cobalt. Yes. Right?
- 16:09Yes. I think so. Yeah. Because we see them together at the end. Because, yeah, okay.
- 16:14We're on the same page now. Right. Another thing is, again, talking about it
- 16:19is a lot clever because we have to kind of dissect it as we're talking about it.
- 16:23But it does fall flat a bit where I don't mind having three bad guys.
- 16:27But one of them has got to be batshit crazy.
- 16:30Exactly. You got to give me something where the fucker likes to rip heads off
- 16:34or something. Yeah, exactly.
- 16:36Give me that, or you need, you know what's missing? The cool henchman.
- 16:41Yeah, there is a henchman there, but he's not very cool, to be honest.
- 16:46Yeah, the Cobalt's henchman. But yes,
- 16:49yeah, I know, you know, people would say, and it is true,
- 16:53you know it's good to sort of you know not see too much of a villain but here
- 16:58you just don't see enough of the main villain kobold you know well yeah almost
- 17:03the organ kobold's the organization.
- 17:06Yes and winstrom and hendrix are part of that organization and i just think
- 17:11you got hendrix who was quite popular at the time got a soul patch just passed away a couple years back,
- 17:16but he was in the the girl with dragon 2 2 series yes he was a good actor and
- 17:22this was kind of his big American break,
- 17:24kind of like what Christoph Waltz did when he did,
- 17:27In Glorious Bastards? Yeah. Yeah, kind of catch the same thing.
- 17:30And he was kind of all in that projectory.
- 17:32Of course, he'd taken too early, too bad. Because I do like him.
- 17:35He's got a presence, got a creepiness to him.
- 17:37But again, I think kind of misused a bit. New personality, really.
- 17:41I think the problem with this one, where the new one's coming up,
- 17:45this one focuses on the cool stunts, which I love, don't get me wrong,
- 17:48but they're not focused on the bad guys enough.
- 17:51Are the plot in general, I would say?
- 17:54Where the new one, even the next one we're talking about, you're focused on the bad guys.
- 18:01Actually, the bad guys will get equal screen time in the next one.
- 18:04Yeah. So I think that's what kind of hurts this one a bit. But we'll get to
- 18:08the Kremlin scene. The Kremlin scene is brilliant. I fucking love the breaking of the Kremlin.
- 18:11I love this whole projection thing. I'm not going to explain it.
- 18:15I'm sure you guys haven't seen the film. It's the screen.
- 18:17Yeah. I fucking love that thing. That thing is so fun. Yeah.
- 18:20I mean, it's a pretty good scene. Very good explosion later on as well.
- 18:25And it does work well in terms of the overall plot.
- 18:29The whole screen projection just was a throwback. It was a short franchise.
- 18:33Two films in the 80s, which I fucking love this franchise.
- 18:36If you guys ever want to see it, we'll definitely probably get to it on the
- 18:39podcast. It's called FX.
- 18:41Yeah. And FX used this kind of stunt in the first one.
- 18:47So I was always wondering, J.J. Abrams, not he didn't write this, sorry.
- 18:50If the guys who wrote this bird and the gang and or
- 18:53even jj or even cruz being a fanboy of
- 18:56cinema himself saw that scene because it's very well apparently
- 19:00apparently it comes from the original series
- 19:03the 60s series of mission impossible now i could be wrong there and i have only
- 19:07seen bits and pieces on repeat on tv of the original series in fact i wouldn't
- 19:12mind revisiting it you know just for personal reasons you know because i always
- 19:16found it quite cool but apparently this screen thing in the Kremlin.
- 19:21Originates and is a reference to the original Mission Impossible series but I could be wrong.
- 19:26I'm sure there's a lot of these Mission Impossible putting on their hat to a
- 19:30lot of episodes we just don't, a lot of people our age haven't seen them so
- 19:33we wouldn't know that yeah, like I say, I've just seen bits and pieces of the original series,
- 19:37I know Leonard Nimoy and Martin Landau are in them and they're pretty cool to be honest.
- 19:43Yeah, yeah so you have, he wakes up in the hospital bed and there's Serov.
- 19:48I like Serov. He's the cow who's the wise one in the group. The Russian guy. The Russian guy.
- 19:53Yeah, I like how he's true, don't. And I do, and I think he's there for the
- 19:58rat-tat-tat with him and Ethan.
- 20:00And I like the whole time we'll find out that Ethan's been playing him,
- 20:05luring him to find him because Ethan needs to drag him along without knowing
- 20:10he's dragging him along so he understands why this is going down.
- 20:14In other words, what Ethan's doing, he's there to get the list,
- 20:19save the world, but at the same time, he's being framed for the Kremlin blowing up. Exactly.
- 20:24He's being wanted. So what Ethan Hunt's doing, and this is how smart this film
- 20:28is. It has layers before I'm seeing it.
- 20:30Is that at the end, we find out that he's been pulling Sidorov the whole time,
- 20:34pretty much giving him enough clues to deliberately follow him so he can understand
- 20:40that it wasn't Ethan Hunt who's caused this. And to clear his own name.
- 20:44Yeah. Yeah. So while he's trying to save the world, he's also clearing his own
- 20:48name by using this detective, which I really like that subplot.
- 20:51Yeah, no, no, it's good, especially whenever it's revealed at the end.
- 20:54You know, whenever, well, it's all resolved in India, you know with this sort
- 20:58of playboy mansion thing but yeah and he's a good character the Russian guy
- 21:02I like him yeah I like him a lot too,
- 21:05and then I do like the back and forth with Brandt and the car first of all and Alec Baldwin.
- 21:13Obviously we'll get the flip side of that soon but.
- 21:17It's nice that you have an actual deep conversation of why the IMF needs to
- 21:23be disbanded it's not one of these things where John Kru you know,
- 21:27Ethan Hunt's a bad guy, we gotta do this.
- 21:29They're actually giving pretty legitimate reasons why the IMF should be shut
- 21:33down and without it being just used as a casual, you know, story.
- 21:40Yeah, or as a, what do you call it, red herring. Yeah, well,
- 21:43I mean, IMF gets shut down quite a lot over the series, but yeah,
- 21:47but it does make sense in terms of the story.
- 21:50And so when they get deactivated and they end up being rogue. Yeah.
- 21:55That's where they're called ghost protocol. Yes. I believe that's why it's called ghost protocol.
- 22:02I don't know. Yeah, well, yeah, that makes sense. I think that's right.
- 22:06I'm thinking back because, yeah, they're basically ghost agents.
- 22:10You know what I mean? Working off the grid, you know, totally.
- 22:13They've even been abandoned by their own. So they have. So, yeah.
- 22:18Okay. The Dubai scene. Yes. Fucking, fucking love it.
- 22:23All the way to the sandstorm car chase.
- 22:27Well, I'm going to play devil's advocate here.
- 22:31Come on man no no no no let me see
- 22:33hear me out hear me out I have a lifelong
- 22:36fear of heights and this scene where
- 22:40Tom Cruise is being an absolute crazy bastard on the
- 22:43world's tallest building hanging outside it this is
- 22:46pure horror to me and it actually almost gives me like physical vertical watching
- 22:51it yes brilliantly done an amazing stunt but it scares the shit out of me I
- 22:55just I'm like oh please don't don't go there you know and the funny thing is
- 23:00about this it's not CGI, the backdrop where you can tell,
- 23:03you can look at it and go, well that's kind of fake, I can go with this.
- 23:06He's actually fucking doing it.
- 23:09And it's ballsy. And it's still CGI always amazes me when it's used like this.
- 23:16Every cord that was holding him, any device that was holding him is gone.
- 23:21You don't even see it. It's terrifying to me.
- 23:24Yeah, well, it's kind of like snakes. Like when I went to see Anaconda,
- 23:28it was the stupidest fucking, I love anaconda because it's just a big rubber snake, right?
- 23:33I can go with it. But when they start peppering real snakes, I look away.
- 23:37Yeah. This is the same thing you're going through. Yeah. So if it was just a
- 23:40guy on a CGI building, you'd be like, oh, no problem.
- 23:42Because it's real. Exactly. He's really doing it.
- 23:46I'm almost, watching it, I almost get like physical vertigo watching it.
- 23:51You know, just the thought of it.
- 23:52It's just turned to my fear of heights, which is a bit odd because I'm six foot four.
- 23:58But there is, I wouldn't even go to the, I mean I would go into that building
- 24:02if it was there, but I wouldn't even go to the higher floors that's how much
- 24:06I fear heights don't even get me started on people hanging off them like Tom Cruise,
- 24:11terra fan when he I do love when Benji's so casual about it,
- 24:16he's okay you have to go to the server room but we can't get into the server
- 24:19room from here this far, you're going to have to go outside yeah,
- 24:23and they're just looking at each other like who's fucking doing it yeah exactly,
- 24:27The gloves is the best thing to add to this little sequence. Not little sequence.
- 24:33The gloves become, because once he loses that one glove and he's hanging by
- 24:37one hand, you're like, holy fuck.
- 24:39Come on. It is extremely tense.
- 24:43Yeah, exactly.
- 24:46Yeah. I just love it. And when he gets flying into the server room and then when he gets out.
- 24:52He does that stunt where he has to get the running motion because he has no more rope.
- 24:58I love when they go, hey, you have no more rope. No shit.
- 25:01Yeah, and he has to literally run down the side of the building,
- 25:04which is not unlike the old Batman TV series when him and Robin used to walk
- 25:08up buildings. Okay, okay.
- 25:11Okay, fuck you. He's really doing it, okay? I'm joking. No fucking Batman and
- 25:16Robin in A-Team crap here.
- 25:18Fucker. but it is the same principle but obviously Cruz is doing it for real
- 25:23you know he's running down the side of the tallest building in the world but
- 25:27yeah it's just yeah I can't even,
- 25:30and then this whole time when he's fucking hanging off buildings and Bran's
- 25:36there watching him Benji's changing you know the names on the doors the numbers
- 25:40on the doors and he comes back.
- 25:43That was a close one guys yeah exactly
- 25:47and they're like hanging from the wall they're hanging
- 25:50from the building and they're looking at him like you fucker yeah
- 25:53are you for real you know yeah and then they're doing
- 25:55the double switch here as well because the masks won't
- 25:58work so they can't discuss you know what i mean they're doing the swap to the codes
- 26:01with the the russian shits you know so yeah
- 26:05no no it's the centerpiece scene of the film and it does work very effectively
- 26:10well um i i was a bit sort of uh just being a sort of nitpicker with the sandstorm
- 26:18did they not have weather forecasts I mean you know why was this a shock to people,
- 26:24including the people of Dubai that the sandstorm was coming I know it's a plot
- 26:29convenience like but it was just a bit something to nitpick I don't think,
- 26:34they can predict sandstorms,
- 26:37I don't know. I'm no meteorologist. I know you are. I'm going to say they can't.
- 26:42Right. Well, they would have seen it coming. Well, first of all. Well, they do.
- 26:47Yes. But would they not have brought it? They look and they go,
- 26:50uh-oh. And Benji goes, it's far away. Don't worry about it.
- 26:53I've got about 20 minutes or something. He says he should be all right.
- 26:55Yeah, but that's all they needed. They didn't realize all the shit was going to go down.
- 26:58Yeah. Well, okay. I'll run with it. You know what I mean? Oh, yeah.
- 27:01See, you need to sit back, relax sometimes, get the fucking A-team on your head
- 27:07and just fucking really think.
- 27:10Listen to some of the key words when they're speaking.
- 27:14How can you relax when Tom Cruise is hanging by one arm off the tallest building
- 27:19in the world? You know what I mean?
- 27:22But no, it works very well in terms of tension overall.
- 27:26And again, they're kind of playing on the first one where they end up giving
- 27:30the real codes to the bad guy.
- 27:32They have no choice, but they're going to get the coach back.
- 27:35Obviously, he has no choice.
- 27:37And this whole sequence when Jane is playing Sabine, Sabine's playing herself,
- 27:43we got the weird Winston, and then we got Winston being played by Brant in front of Sabine.
- 27:48You know, it's just really fun in two separate rooms right next to each other.
- 27:52Yes. And I thought the cut back and forth where Sabine's quite smart.
- 27:58She was looking at his eye the whole time.
- 28:00She knew something wasn't right. and I did like that, that she wasn't an idiot.
- 28:04She was catching on to something was wrong because Brant was having a problem
- 28:07with the contact thing, which is awesome. I love that little gadget.
- 28:11This movie does have a lot of gadgets, which you don't get in a lot of Mission
- 28:14Impossible, believe it or not, you don't.
- 28:16You have a lot of cool stunts jumping out buildings and motorcycle chases,
- 28:19but you don't have these cool little tweaky gadgets and you do get this in Ghost Protocol.
- 28:23Yeah, yeah. And then, of course, there's the fight with her and Agent Carter, you know?
- 28:30I do love the fact when Jane just fucking kicks her and she flies out the window.
- 28:34Fly out the window, yeah. Yeah, it's like, bye-bye, bitch, you know?
- 28:38Yeah, but overall, I would say the Dubai sequence is the best part of the film overall.
- 28:46Yeah, and even once you get out of the building and they're in the sandstorm
- 28:49and he's chasing him and he's got to get the goggles on, he's using his phone
- 28:53as best he can, and you see the cars coming and he's using the headlights to
- 28:57try to see, and the car chase, is just amazing.
- 29:01And then when everything is all said and done, once the car chase is done and
- 29:06Hendrix is escaped, the sandstorm clears.
- 29:08But also you think, we originally think it's the henchman, the blonde henchman,
- 29:12but it's actually Hendrix with a mask.
- 29:15Yeah. And then you find out, this is where you, because you'll see Windstrom again with Hendrix.
- 29:20So you know these two were in cahoons together the whole time.
- 29:24Yes. Yeah. Uh-huh. But...
- 29:27I did like the stuff with Brant.
- 29:31Where basically it's revealed that Brant was, well, we think that Tom Cruise's
- 29:36wife in it has been killed between films, although we'll find out,
- 29:40spoiler alert, later on that that's not the case.
- 29:43But Brant has always blamed himself for failing to protect her.
- 29:46So it turns out he's not really the secretary.
- 29:48He's actually a fully trained agent. So I like the sort of sparring between
- 29:51him and Cruise. And, you know, like Cruise is, who are you really?
- 29:55You know, that sort of thing. Yeah, because he calls him out.
- 29:57He goes, there's no way you're a fucking, you're a desk jockey.
- 30:00You're a fucking, you're a fighter.
- 30:02Yeah. You're not the help. As Banshee calls him, you're not the helper, you know? Yeah.
- 30:06So I do like that reveal. And I do like that side story.
- 30:09And you do have Jane as kind of wasted a bit.
- 30:14I think, again, I think scenes were cut with her and Halloway,
- 30:17the agent, because of that relationship.
- 30:20So I like Paula Patton. She's gorgeous. And I like her as an actress.
- 30:24But I thought her character was kind of wasted to be honest.
- 30:27Yeah, I was going to say that as well.
- 30:28I agree. I actually think she's I don't know what, maybe there was edits that
- 30:32went on, but I think overall her character is the weakest of the main characters here.
- 30:38Well, apart from the bad guys, certainly of the good guys of the IMF team,
- 30:41she's the weakest character and I think that's maybe why she's not in the next one.
- 30:47They say scheduling issues. But you're right, sometimes that means you're fired. Yeah, exactly.
- 30:52That can mean anything. But now we're introducing Breeze Knopf and he owns the
- 30:59code from the satellite.
- 31:01They need to get access to the satellite. Yes.
- 31:03And, okay, I'd like to see the banter between Brant and Benji.
- 31:10Brant has to jump down in this tunnel. Yes. And he's got the Magnus are going to save him.
- 31:17Yes. It's a fucking great scene, but
- 31:20the whole scene with Jane and
- 31:24her trying to seduce Nath I gotta say it's
- 31:28terrible and the reason I don't
- 31:31like it I felt I was back in Mission Impossible 2 yeah I mean even the Indian
- 31:38playboy you know super billionaire guy himself it's cringe it's just a bit stupid
- 31:44you know overall I don't think it really works but yes the seduction scene doesn't work Willie either.
- 31:51It actually reminded me a bit of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
- 31:54You know, obviously the Indians setting, but you know whenever Indy and Willie
- 31:59are, but it's done for comedic reasons, which this is as well,
- 32:02but it works much better in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,
- 32:05whereas here it's just a bit cringe and a bit out of place, actually.
- 32:10Yeah, that's kind of what we were talking about in the beginning with the Russian president. Yes.
- 32:15It's just like when the action scenes work here, they work.
- 32:19But there's not many action scenes in the film. Yeah. There's quite a bit.
- 32:23They're great. When they're there, they're fucking great.
- 32:25I mean, the ghost protocol, the tower is the big one, obviously, and the guard chasing.
- 32:31I do like the nods. Like when he goes, when Ethan goes to the ship to go talk
- 32:37to the man who knows everything.
- 32:38Yeah. It's made from President Spruller. Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:42The reason he does that is because he knows the detective will go to him. Where was Ethan going?
- 32:47Yeah. This guy's going to betray him. But did he notice the guy who made him put the mask on?
- 32:55That's the guy. He was in prison with Spruller. No, no, no.
- 32:59Okay. You know the guy when he goes to the ship and you see a guy with long
- 33:02hair and glasses? Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 33:04He was Max's. That was Max's henchman in the first one.
- 33:09Ah, right. Same character. Right. That's why he says, hey, how's it going? He knows.
- 33:14Right. I didn't know that. Yes. I just thought it was just another contact that he had.
- 33:19I didn't realize he was also in the first film. No, he kept contact with him.
- 33:23That's how he. Yeah. So I thought that was kind of fun. Fair enough. Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:28Now let's talk about this scene. Now, unfortunately, I wish we knew the bad
- 33:34guy to be more vile. Yes, he wants to kill everybody. That's bad.
- 33:37But I never saw him kill anybody. Like, I want to see some torturing.
- 33:41He's no, he's no, he's no personality.
- 33:43And yeah, you know, it's, he does kill, he does kill that poor guy,
- 33:47Linoid, Linoid or whatever, the guy who knows the codes. But that's it. But,
- 33:52But, yeah, and he kills his family. So I guess I talk about it's bad.
- 33:58Right? No, no. But for a bad guy, you want to have a real threat and a presence.
- 34:02He has a physical presence, but it's not really put to use, you know?
- 34:07And as an actor, I'm sure he was a bit pissed off himself that he wasn't given
- 34:11enough to do, you know? And I'm sure he wanted to do more.
- 34:14And, yeah, obviously there's a danger of going to Hammy, but he's not given enough.
- 34:19And so it just, it doesn't as a bad guy, you know, I think that this is one
- 34:24of the biggest weaknesses of this film, and it does have some great moments, but it has no real.
- 34:30Definable villain that you can sort of, or memorable villain would be a better
- 34:34way to put it, you know Yeah, with a villain like this, you want to say,
- 34:39you want the audience to go get him.
- 34:41Exactly He might as well just be a henchman Yeah, and it was missing that in all fairness.
- 34:46In fact, Sabrina Sabine was probably more of a badass.
- 34:50Yeah. Yeah. But I do like, I guess these things do exist. This whole car park
- 34:56elevator thing is fucking awesome.
- 34:58That's, I was about to say that actually that, you know, the car factory sort
- 35:02of finale that, that is. No, that's a car park.
- 35:05Yes, I know. But it works very well. So it does. Oh, I love it.
- 35:08And I love just the fight. And this one, we talked about you,
- 35:13Freight of Heights and Washington.
- 35:14Him taking these hits and falling on cars. You can feel this.
- 35:18It's like, ouch. No, no, it's very well done.
- 35:21And I do like, you know, the guy we never got to know wants this to happen.
- 35:28This is how evil he is. We get this one shot. You know, we talked about just
- 35:32a second ago how we want our villains to be badass and stuff.
- 35:35He does a badass move here. He sacrifices himself.
- 35:39So he can't get to him. So he can't get to him off the nuclear bomb.
- 35:42So he jumps off the car and he fucking hits.
- 35:46But when he hits the car, when he's falling down and then hits the cement splat,
- 35:51and he's still alive at the end.
- 35:53It's so good. No, no, wait.
- 35:56And then Tom Cruise gets in a car. This is where I got to go.
- 36:00Oh, okay, Tom. We like you, buddy.
- 36:02But he takes the car and just heads straight down, and he crashes head on. Yeah.
- 36:09How many miles an hour How many floors
- 36:12up And the airbag saves them But he's Tom
- 36:15Cruise you know what I mean And he probably did that stunt himself I
- 36:18would have no doubt But I would say that this is another I
- 36:21found the Bad guy's motivations for wanting to End the world a bit one dimensional
- 36:27And a bit stupid actually So I wanted a more Elaborate plan and to be honest
- 36:33I think after this I think Because Cruise is no dozer you know in terms of being
- 36:37You know as a producer and stuff,
- 36:39he's no you know he's no dozer at all i think
- 36:42that's a reason mcquarie was brought on board for
- 36:45the following ones both as director and writer mcquarie
- 36:49wrote the usual suspects and stuff and yeah i just think the bad guy here his
- 36:54motivations are stupid and one-dimensional and also we knew we're near in it
- 36:57enough i like you said but but isn't his character really just a bond villain
- 37:02yeah but with no personality at least bond villains have personalities and he, you know.
- 37:07I get, you know, trying not to show too much of the bad guy,
- 37:10but you just don't see enough of him.
- 37:12You know, I want him to snarl and, I don't know, stroke a cat or something,
- 37:16you know, or give us something, you know?
- 37:18Yeah, so at the end, Ethan's wife is
- 37:21alive. They look at each other from a distance, give each other a smile.
- 37:25Brant's okay now because he knows she's still alive. And Brant accepts the next
- 37:30mission to join the team.
- 37:32Yes. And we find out that the next, The next is about the syndicate Yes,
- 37:38and also more importantly,
- 37:40Luther pops up Yeah, Luther has his little cameo Nice to see him Oh yeah,
- 37:45always Nice to see Biggie, Bing Rames Oh yeah, I like Bing,
- 37:49As pointless as the role was Yeah, well exactly But he's Marcellus Wallace,
- 37:53you know what I mean So always great to see him,
- 37:56Alright guys, we're going to dive in now to the next one here,
- 38:00Yeah, guys, thanks for being patient with this one I hope you enjoy it And our
- 38:04next one up is going to be,
- 38:06holy shit. What is it? Rogue nation? Rogue nation. Yes.
- 38:10I think you're right, Kieran. Great phrase.
- 38:13Brain freeze. Sorry, I lose brain cells every time I'm having a conversation with Trevor.
- 38:20No, to be fair. Right. I'm more like the other way about it.
- 38:23No, to be fair, these are certainly the next three at least,
- 38:27I'm missing possible, you know, this one and the next two could all be watched
- 38:31back to back because they do run into each other in terms of the characters.
- 38:35Well, they all do, including the new one. Yeah. They're doing what they do, Daniel Craig.
- 38:38Yeah. All of Daniel Craig's movies.
- 38:41Yeah, they're all internet. and all four of them tell a story. Yeah.
- 38:46And a reason why they happened. Yeah, so they're all a continuation. Yeah.
- 38:52So there you go. We are, we're done. I think we're going to wrap this one up.
- 38:57All right, guys, listen, thanks. And give us a shout always at citizenframe
- 39:00underscore podcast on Instagram.
- 39:02And, of course, always on Facebook. That's all I got.
- 39:07I'm worn out watching all these stunts. Yeah, people jumping off the biggest
- 39:11buildings in the world and stuff. Yeah.
- 39:13My favorite stunt he's ever done is coming up in the next one.
- 39:16It's the opening scene. He's fucking nuts. I love it. Fucking love it.
- 39:20And he did like 12 takes. But listen, you guys have a good one. Talk soon.
- 39:25Music.
