- 0:02Davina Frederick: Hi and welcome to the wealthy woman lawyer
- 0:04Podcast. I'm Davina Frederick. And a few months ago on this
- 0:08podcast I shared with you a list of books that had been life
- 0:13changing. For me, there are books that I've read, that
- 0:16really helped me to change my mindset or how I was showing up
- 0:20in the world, how I thought about wealth and money, and
- 0:26improving you know how I function in business. Now, of
- 0:29course, I've read hundreds and hundreds of books, as I'm sure
- 0:31most of you listening to this have if you're, if you're
- 0:33readers, if you love Audible. If you love Kindle, if you are like
- 0:38hardback books, if you know me very well, you'll know that I
- 0:41have three huge bookcases in my office, plus all these other
- 0:46books stacked in other places. And this is after consistently
- 0:49cleaning out books. And I also have, you know, as many on my
- 0:54Kindle, and in my audible, I tend to now listen more to books
- 0:58on audible than I do read. But I still are those things that I
- 1:02really want to be able to go back and highlight and make
- 1:04notes. And I still buy hardback books for that purpose. But I
- 1:08thought today, one of the issues with that episode I reflected on
- 1:13as I was gathering the books, and putting them out there is
- 1:17that they were all written by men. And it got me thinking
- 1:25that, you know, this is the wealthy woman lawyer podcast.
- 1:28And so I really wanted to just call through my collection of
- 1:32books, and share with you some books that also helped me in
- 1:36business that were written by women, and a diverse number of
- 1:42women. So I collected if you if you're watching the video on
- 1:46YouTube that I'm you'll see the book, if not, I'll read the
- 1:49title and the author, and hopefully I'll pronounce
- 1:51people's names correctly. But I'm going to start with coach
- 1:56yourself to success. And this is by to lane dander. Think I'm
- 2:03saying that correctly. And coach yourself to success. I'll put it
- 2:07back here. So maybe you guys can see it sort of holy, it's so
- 2:09close to the camera, this coach yourself to success. Let me just
- 2:13tell you this book. I discovered before I even knew what coaching
- 2:17was, this was my entree into the coaching world and I bought this
- 2:22book. Back when I was young and single and living alone and
- 2:29really had some life goals I wanted to achieve to Elaine is a
- 2:33life coach, I got this book when I was in my 30s Somebody sorry,
- 2:39let's see 3020s or 30s, late 20s, maybe early 30s. Let me
- 2:43just say that this copy was copyrighted in 2000.
- 2:49She has since probably done some updated editions of this. But
- 2:52what I liked about this book coach yourself to success, it's
- 2:55one 101 tips for personal from a personal coach for reaching your
- 3:00goals in work and life. And there are some things in this
- 3:04book that just stick with me even to this day, I probably
- 3:10could go back and reread it and with a different perspective now
- 3:13and you know, learn a whole lot more about myself. I haven't
- 3:17read it in years, but it was a life changing book for me.
- 3:21Another book is let go now. And this is by Karen Casey and I
- 3:28have bought multiple copies of this book, I have sent it to
- 3:32friends I have sent it to clients. What I love this is
- 3:36Karen Casey let go now embracing detachment is the name of it.
- 3:41Now this book is really written more with the it's a collection
- 3:46of essays about the power of detaching yourself from other
- 3:53people's business basically. And it's written from the
- 3:57perspective of fine of addiction and overcoming that codependency
- 4:01and that need to fix other people and be responsible for
- 4:04other people. And there is you can read literally read an essay
- 4:08a day and there's some pause and reflect moments that help you.
- 4:12But this book was instrumental in helping me a, you know, board
- 4:18fixer into learning to set boundaries around myself and my
- 4:26business and really learn to separate other people's problems
- 4:31from my problems and finding out where even when I'm helping
- 4:34people solve problems either as a lawyer or as a coach. It's
- 4:38really looking for how to establish those boundaries. And
- 4:42it works as well with family and friends as well and really have
- 4:47some emotional detachment from taking on other people's
- 4:51problems as though they are your own. When you do that you do a
- 4:54disservice not only to yourself, but also to the other person who
- 4:59is on a journey of discovery and becoming who they are, and the
- 5:03greatest gift you can give someone as a friend once told me
- 5:06is the space and room to solve their own problem. So, let go
- 5:12now I give this to people all the time. Okay? Jensen cero. A
- 5:18lot of you probably are very familiar with Jensen Chero this
- 5:21is you are a badass at making money. Her original book you are
- 5:26a badass is somewhere in my office, but this was the one
- 5:29that I grabbed from her, you are a badass, and then you are a
- 5:32badass making money. What I like about Jensen cero is she takes a
- 5:36lot of concepts that I have learned from other coaches and
- 5:39other places. But her manner of delivery is so approachable and
- 5:45so enjoyable. So I like to listen to Jen, she reads
- 5:48herself. I like to listen to her on Audible while I'm walking. So
- 5:54I've listened to a number of her books while I'm out walking
- 5:56keeps me walking more miles because I keep listening to her.
- 5:59And invariably everything that she says I'm like, yes, yes,
- 6:03yes. So if you need that encouragement, and that sort of
- 6:08resurgence of thinking of yourself as a badass and maybe
- 6:11shifting some of your limiting beliefs and mindset blocks that
- 6:15you want to get just one of Jensen Cheras book I recommend
- 6:18you are a badass, or you are a badass making money. All right.
- 6:22Rachael Rogers, if you haven't heard of Rachael Rogers, you
- 6:26need to get familiar with who Rachael Rogers is because this
- 6:30woman is so inspirational. This is her book, we should all be
- 6:34millionaires. It is also the name of her force. Rachel is
- 6:39someone who grew up in Queens, New York. She grew up in
- 6:46poverty circumstance, and she has become a multimillionaire
- 6:50now, and she's done that she is an attorney for you, Lady
- 6:53lawyers out there you I know you're gonna love that. She's a
- 6:56lawyer, and she built her own law practice. And she scaled it
- 6:59to probably high six figures. And she realized this wasn't
- 7:02really what she wanted to do. And so she leveraged her
- 7:08intellectual property, and began to create courses. And so now
- 7:13she coaches other women in how to become millionaires
- 7:16themselves. And in particular, it's a great fit. If you are
- 7:20somebody who is a course creator, or you want to be a
- 7:24course creator, you want to leverage your intellectual
- 7:27property, turn it into courses that you can sell the millions,
- 7:31that Rachael Rogers, but this is a great book, it really is kind
- 7:35of her story. And it's a little bit of an inspiration,
- 7:38inspirational. And in particular, she focuses on women
- 7:43of color, marginalized groups, and, and really is someone who
- 7:50wants to inspire people who've been marginalized in the past or
- 7:55currently, and encourage them and say, Yes, you can't do it, I
- 7:59did it. If I did it, you can do it too. And so for, I recommend
- 8:03this book, highly for you to get to know her, follow her on all
- 8:06your socials. Because she's, I've even in the time that I
- 8:12have been following her. And I was enrolled in one of her
- 8:16courses. The she has grown so much, even in the amount of time
- 8:21that I've known her the pandemic was a huge boon for her
- 8:25business. And it really scale quickly. So, if you're a course
- 8:28creator, that's great for you, if you're an attorney who wants
- 8:31to be inspired, if you're a woman of color, you know, read
- 8:34this book, if you think all women should read this book is
- 8:37very inspiring. Okay, the Charisma Myth, how anyone can
- 8:41master the art and science of personal magnetism. This is by
- 8:46Olivia Fox Cobain. I hope I say I hope I'm saying that right.
- 8:49cabanes see a B, A and E. And she is French. She wrote this
- 8:55book and what I really liked about this is so I I was
- 8:59somebody you know, coming up in the world, I've been told that
- 9:03I'm charismatic and blah, blah, blah. And I was curious about
- 9:08and I've always been fascinated by women like Jackie Yau and
- 9:12Marilyn Monroe and how they, how they fascinate as Holly hag
- 9:17Hogshead would say in her book, but how people become more
- 9:23charismatic and how you attract people to you. And this is a
- 9:27great book if you want to be a powerful attractor. A lot of you
- 9:34may be familiar with Susan Kane's book quiet the power of
- 9:38introverts in a world that can't stop talking. The power of
- 9:42introverts in a world that can't stop talking. If you if you are
- 9:48saying to yourself, Well, I'm an introvert, it's easier for an
- 9:50extrovert to get out and network and meet people and make money.
- 9:55You need to read Susan Kane's book quiet because quiet is For
- 10:00those of us who are introverts and who think, on some level
- 10:04that that is a detriment to our ability to have everything that
- 10:07we want in the world, because we're not equal people. And this
- 10:13book really dispels a lot of myths about introversion and
- 10:16extraversion and what it actually means. So if you have
- 10:19not read Susan Kane's book, quiet, this was a huge
- 10:21bestseller. A number of years came out a number of years ago.
- 10:26I'm sure it was probably on Oprah's book club was two but
- 10:30Susan Cain, quiet, okay. Breaking money silence. I
- 10:35interviewed Kathleen burns, Kingsbury, Kathleen burns,
- 10:39Kingsbury on my podcast and another episode. If you haven't
- 10:43listened to that, go back and listen to it. This is her book
- 10:45breaking money silence, how to shatter money taboos talk openly
- 10:49about finances and live a richer life. Kathleen is absolutely
- 10:54doing just super intelligent, delightful to speak with. And I
- 11:00really enjoyed her book breaking money silence because, you know,
- 11:03I think that's one of the things that keeps women from growing
- 11:09into their full potential and wealth is that there's so much
- 11:13taboo around discussion of money, particularly in intimate
- 11:17relationships. And so this is a great book for you. And then
- 11:21lastly, on my list, I do have other books, but I'm gonna wrap
- 11:24it up today with this one. And this is Angela, duck or No,
- 11:28actually, I
- 11:29have two more I want to share with you after the sorry about
- 11:30that. This is Angela Duckworth and the book is grit. If you
- 11:36have not read this book, you want to read this book. This is
- 11:39the power of passion and perseverance. So what Angela
- 11:43Duckworth, who's a psychologist says that really makes those
- 11:51successful people stand out from others is that they have grit.
- 11:56And grit is kind of this not only passion, but it's it is
- 12:01also about being tenacious and persevering and sort of that not
- 12:06giving up thing and that's what really is the standout. So if
- 12:10you're an entrepreneur, this is a must read for you, Angela
- 12:13Duckworth, it's RIT Okay, and the other two books are just
- 12:16kind of inspirational books. One is the way women are. And this
- 12:21is the transformative opinions and dissents of Justice Ruth
- 12:27Bader Ginsburg, the transport to the transformative opinions and
- 12:32dissents of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg the way women are, and
- 12:36if you have any doubt, why we need feminism in this country
- 12:41why women need a special place to gather and to to come
- 12:48together as a force to exercise our power and why we need more
- 12:52economic power in the world, then you want to read this
- 12:54because she any book about Ruth Bader Ginsburg is worth reading,
- 13:00because she was such a key figure in helping women get the
- 13:05rights that women have today. If you're not familiar with the
- 13:09women's movement of the 70s, you need to get familiar because I
- 13:12have a feeling we're going to need to be stepping it up more
- 13:15and more in in our current state with the way things are going.
- 13:21And then lastly, this one is self made. This is inspired by
- 13:25the life of madam CJ Walker, it was written by her I want to say
- 13:33a niece or grandchild I don't remember now. But Alia, bundles,
- 13:39and I don't particularly like the one with this cover because
- 13:43there was a TV program or a movie of this saying that they
- 13:48took this book and they made it into a movie. And I didn't care
- 13:51much for the movie because I thought it was a little
- 13:53farcical. And you know, the way that they did it, I think they
- 13:56were trying to cram the life of this woman is very inspirational
- 14:00woman into a couple of hours. And I just didn't think that it
- 14:03came off very well. But I do recommend reading the book,
- 14:07Madam CJ Walker, for those of you do not know is the first
- 14:10woman millionaire in the United States. And she also was black
- 14:15woman, and she created hair products for women of color. And
- 14:22so it is truly truly remarkable that the first woman oftentimes
- 14:27people think that that black woman had, you know, would not
- 14:32have been able to create a billion dollar business back
- 14:36during the 1800s which is when she did at 1900s. But this story
- 14:44will open your eyes to what life was like in certain areas or
- 14:50people of color at that time. And of course there's a lot of
- 14:52things that came after that. That change that dynamic for for
- 14:59black people. In and white people in this country as well.
- 15:02But this is a truly inspirational story. If you are
- 15:05a woman in business, I highly recommend you read this book as
- 15:08well. So there you go, those are books by women, books by women,
- 15:13for women, there are actually four other for everybody. But I
- 15:17really thought it was important to do that. And also, one thing
- 15:21I noticed as I was going through my bookcases, and I was sort of
- 15:24pulling out some favorite books by women, I realized how so many
- 15:30of the books in my bookcase, the vast majority of books that I
- 15:33have, that are business books, or marketing books, or
- 15:35inspirational books, or, you know, whatever related to
- 15:40develop, you know, self help and development are written by men.
- 15:46And that could be because there's discrimination in the
- 15:52publication industry, probably, that we certainly know it exist
- 15:55in the movie making industry and entertainment industry and every
- 15:59other industry out there. It exists in the legal industry.
- 16:02And so I was really disappointed and how difficult it was to pull
- 16:07out sort of some, not just books written by women, but really
- 16:15famous books, you know, books that are bestsellers, and known
- 16:18throughout the world. And so these, these are some, I invite
- 16:23you to share with me and to others, any other books that are
- 16:27written by women, particularly women of color, just a different
- 16:33Asian American women, Native American women, Hispanic women,
- 16:40people have different experiences. If you will share
- 16:43those books, I would so appreciate it, share them in the
- 16:46comments of this video, share them if you're listening to it
- 16:50on YouTube, or on Instagram, do or in Facebook or LinkedIn,
- 16:55share those comments, share those book recommendations in
- 16:59the comments, or you can send them to me through direct
- 17:02messaging me on Instagram. And as I begin to collect more, I'll
- 17:07do another one of these and share some other books that are
- 17:09reader recommendations about that. So if you're listening to
- 17:12the podcast, you can connect with me on Instagram and comment
- 17:16there or send me a DM it's at wealthy woman lawyer at wealthy
- 17:20woman lawyer. So I hope you've enjoyed this episode, I will
- 17:25have links to these books in the show notes of this podcast
- 17:30episode as well. So you can go and check them out for yourself.
- 17:35And I welcome your feedback and find out what what what you
- 17:39experienced when you read some of these books or when you went
- 17:41looking for women who have written life changing books.
- 17:46Also, lastly, I would just say to you if if you have not
- 17:51written a book, then that's something that I encourage you
- 17:55to do. Write a book because writing a book not only changes
- 18:00other people's lives by giving them information that you have
- 18:03that they may not have, but it also changes your life. And
- 18:06because there's nothing about learning a subject on a deep
- 18:09love deep level that will do it for you other than teaching
- 18:14others right, which is what the book writing process is about.
- 18:17If you would like some help with the book writing process, reach
- 18:21out to me. I'm going to share a link on this podcast. You can I
- 18:27have a colleague who I've introduced you to before who has
- 18:30a writing program. So either DM me DM me and I will send you
- 18:36that information if that's something you're interested in
- 18:38doing. And I hope you enjoy this episode. Thanks so much for
- 18:41being here and listening, going through my library with me and
- 18:45hearing some of my favorite books
