- 0:09Speaker 1: Brokenness is the place where God stops us, where he
- 0:14Speaker 1: halts our progress, where he causes us to see the
- 0:18Speaker 1: end to which we will come if we continue to
- 0:21Speaker 1: go down that road. Brokenness is the place to which
- 0:26Speaker 1: we come when we recognize that That all that we are,
- 0:31Speaker 1: all that we have, and all that we do in
- 0:34Speaker 1: and of ourselves is sorely and miserably insufficient. God crushes
- 0:44Speaker 1: us under the weight of our own sin. But I
- 0:49Speaker 1: want to suggest to you tonight that brokenness is absolutely
- 0:53Speaker 1: an appropriate response to sin. Let me take you to
- 0:58Speaker 1: a couple of places in history. Place number one in
- 1:01Speaker 1: history is that place where David sins with Bathsheba, where
- 1:06Speaker 1: David is out on the roof of the king's palace
- 1:10Speaker 1: during this very strange time in his life. The author
- 1:14Speaker 1: says it was the springtime, the time when kings go
- 1:17Speaker 1: off to war, but David stayed home at Jerusalem. David
- 1:24Speaker 1: is a warrior king. That's how he made his name
- 1:28Speaker 1: for himself. It's springtime. It's time to go to war.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And he sends the fellas off. And just happens to
- 1:37Speaker 1: be up on his roof. And just happens to look
- 1:42Speaker 1: over at a beautiful woman who lives close enough for
- 1:46Speaker 1: him to see her bathing on the roof.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It just happens to work out that way.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Wink, wink, nod, nod. Seduces this woman. depending on your
- 1:57Speaker 1: reading of the text, rapes this woman. Has her husband killed.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It's all this time later when he sits down and
- 2:10Speaker 1: pens Psalm number 51. One of the most poignant, poetic,
- 2:18Speaker 1: beautiful pictures of brokenness that you will find anywhere. right
- 2:25Speaker 1: here in Psalm number 51.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Let's read.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love.
- 2:34Speaker 1: According to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgression. Wash
- 2:37Speaker 1: me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
- 2:42Speaker 1: For I know my transgression and my sin is ever
- 2:44Speaker 1: before me. Against you, you only have I sinned and
- 2:47Speaker 1: done what is evil in your sight so that you
- 2:50Speaker 1: may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold,
- 2:55Speaker 1: I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my
- 2:57Speaker 1: mother conceived me. Behold, you delight in truth and the
- 3:00Speaker 1: inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean. Wash me,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear
- 3:13Speaker 1: joy and gladness. Let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Let the bones that you have broken rejoice. The bones
- 3:22Speaker 1: that you have broken. Oh no, that's not God. God
- 3:26Speaker 1: doesn't do that. God would never do anything against your will.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I guess David asked to be broken by God. That
- 3:36Speaker 1: the bones that you have broken rejoiced. Hide your face
- 3:39Speaker 1: from my sins. Blot out all my iniquities. Create in
- 3:42Speaker 1: me a.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Cast me not away from your presence and take not
- 3:48Speaker 1: your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy
- 3:51Speaker 1: of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Then I will teach transgressors your ways and sinners will
- 3:58Speaker 1: return to you. Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God,
- 4:02Speaker 1: O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing
- 4:04Speaker 1: aloud of your righteousness. Oh Lord, open my lips and
- 4:08Speaker 1: my mouth will declare your praise. Several reasons we see
- 4:13Speaker 1: here that brokenness is an appropriate response to sin. We're
- 4:17Speaker 1: talking about an appropriate response to a holy God when
- 4:21Speaker 1: we recognize that we have offended him. The first one
- 4:25Speaker 1: that he says here, he says, according to your steadfast love,
- 4:28Speaker 1: according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgression. That
- 4:31Speaker 1: term blot out, that term wipe out is a word
- 4:35Speaker 1: that's used a number of times in the Hebrew Bible.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But perhaps the most pertinent one is that's precisely what
- 4:42Speaker 1: God says he's going to do in the flood.
- 4:48Speaker 2: The same Hebrew verb. God sent the flood out.
- 4:52Speaker 1: In order to wipe the slate clean and start all
- 4:56Speaker 1: over again. David says, I need the slate washed clean.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I need you to take all of this away from me.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I need it to wash it away, just like you
- 5:13Speaker 1: cleansed the earth with the flood. There's a second term
- 5:17Speaker 1: that he used here. He said, wash me thoroughly from
- 5:20Speaker 1: my iniquity. Now that verb is more akin to a
- 5:24Speaker 1: woman washing clothes down at the river and scrubbing them
- 5:28Speaker 1: and dipping them and plunging them again and again into
- 5:31Speaker 1: the water and scrubbing them on a washboard.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Scrub me. as though you were washing clothes on a washboard.
- 5:39Speaker 1: So wipe it off the record, scrub me, make me clean.
- 5:43Speaker 1: And then the final word he says, and cleanse me
- 5:45Speaker 1: from my sin. That word that he uses is a
- 5:48Speaker 1: reference to a ceremonial cleansing, making something ready for religious use.
- 5:56Speaker 1: So in other words, David understands that what he has
- 5:59Speaker 1: done has scarred him, has stained him. We heard it
- 6:05Speaker 1: earlier today. God says in Isaiah 1, and we're going
- 6:07Speaker 1: to read it. Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean.
- 6:13Speaker 2: It stains us. It scars us.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And we ought to be broken when we sin because
- 6:21Speaker 1: we recognize what we have done. We recognize what we
- 6:24Speaker 1: have brought upon ourselves. We recognize that we have just
- 6:29Speaker 1: attached something to us that has consequence. We ought to
- 6:35Speaker 1: be broken over our sins because it scars us, because
- 6:40Speaker 1: it stains us. And when we have a flippant attitude
- 6:45Speaker 1: towards sin, when we don't experience brokenness, when we are
- 6:49Speaker 1: not crushed under the weight of our own sin, one
- 6:52Speaker 1: of the reasons is that we do not understand the
- 6:56Speaker 1: consequences of sin.
- 6:59Speaker 2: We don't get it.
- 7:03Speaker 1: We think that, especially for believers, we think, okay, Jesus
- 7:07Speaker 1: died for my sins, for all of my sins, past, present,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and future.
- 7:11Speaker 2: They're paid for.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And yet, there's scar tissue. The sin also creates memories
- 7:20Speaker 1: that remain with us. Now stay with me on this one.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Because oftentimes when we talk about this, you want to
- 7:26Speaker 1: get people upset. Just talk about this. The idea that
- 7:29Speaker 1: sin creates memories that stay with us.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, brother. As far as.
- 7:34Speaker 1: The east is from the west, that's how far away
- 7:38Speaker 1: it takes my sins from me. Yep, but you remember them. No,
- 7:42Speaker 1: he cast them into the sea of forgetfulness. Yeah, see,
- 7:45Speaker 1: here's the interesting thing about that. God can forget stuff.
- 7:49Speaker 2: You, not so much. That's not the way we were created.
- 7:53Speaker 2: It's not.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It's not. And so people come up all the time
- 7:56Speaker 1: and they just, I don't know what to do. I
- 7:59Speaker 1: pray and I pray and I pray and I just
- 8:01Speaker 1: keep having thoughts about this horrible thing.
- 8:04Speaker 2: That I did.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Well, what do I do?
- 8:11Speaker 1: Recognize that sin creates memories that stay with you. People
- 8:19Speaker 1: actually believe that you can give them a magic formula
- 8:24Speaker 1: and the heinous things that they do should be erased
- 8:27Speaker 1: from their mind and they should no longer be broken
- 8:30Speaker 1: over them. Folks, did I remind you that he wrote
- 8:33Speaker 1: this a year after his sin? And look at what
- 8:36Speaker 1: he says in verse 3. For I know my transgression
- 8:40Speaker 1: and my sin is ever before me. A year later,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I know my transgression and my sin is ever before me.
- 8:50Speaker 1: It's always there. Don't believe me? Ask a woman who's
- 8:55Speaker 1: had an abortion. Somebody convinced her that it would be okay.
- 9:02Speaker 1: You could erase it as though it never happened. And
- 9:04Speaker 1: then you can go on with your life. And then
- 9:06Speaker 1: a year later, she sees a baby who's about the
- 9:11Speaker 1: age her baby would have been.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And she crumbles. Why?
- 9:18Speaker 1: We were not created to forget things. But by the way,
- 9:22Speaker 1: that's good. Let me give you at least three reasons
- 9:23Speaker 1: why that's good. that we're not created to forget things.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Number one, if you could forget your sin, you could
- 9:29Speaker 1: never testify of the goodness of God. Amen?
- 9:33Speaker 2: Do you have a testimony of the goodness of God?
- 9:36Speaker 2: You know what?
- 9:37Speaker 1: I think I used to one time, but I can't
- 9:39Speaker 1: remember any of my sin. Therefore, I really can't testify
- 9:43Speaker 1: to the goodness of God. Do you hear how ridiculous
- 9:45Speaker 1: that is? But again, people walk around all the time
- 9:48Speaker 1: talking about forgetting their sins.
- 9:51Speaker 2: It's not the way human beings were put together.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And we ought to be broken over our sin because
- 9:56Speaker 1: when we sin, we.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Create an HDD.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Blu-ray picture in our mind that will be there for
- 10:04Speaker 1: years and years and years how many individuals even in
- 10:14Speaker 1: the church how many testimonies have you heard of individuals
- 10:17Speaker 1: who came to Christ late in life had sexual partners
- 10:21Speaker 1: before they got married and now absolutely wish that they
- 10:26Speaker 1: could erase the faces, the familiar sense, the memories of
- 10:36Speaker 1: their former partners so that they could enjoy their spouse
- 10:41Speaker 1: more thoroughly. How many of us have heard those testimony?
- 10:47Speaker 1: How many of us could give that testimony We ought
- 10:51Speaker 1: to be broken over our sin because it creates memories
- 10:56Speaker 1: that stay with us. And first and foremost, if we
- 10:59Speaker 1: couldn't remember our sin, we couldn't testify. Here's the second thing.
- 11:02Speaker 1: If we couldn't remember our sins, we wouldn't be warned
- 11:06Speaker 1: against doing them again. Could you imagine if we could
- 11:11Speaker 1: literally forget that fire was hot? It should be walking
- 11:15Speaker 1: around a bunch of crispy people, you know. What's the matter?
- 11:20Speaker 1: I'm not sure, man. These things just keep on coming
- 11:23Speaker 1: on my hands.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Folks, that's what we would be like towards sin if
- 11:33Speaker 2: we couldn't remember it.
- 11:36Speaker 1: God.
- 11:37Speaker 2: gives us the gift.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Of the memory of our sins so that it continues
- 11:42Speaker 1: to remind us of the consequence.
- 11:45Speaker 2: And he uses us, uses that.
- 11:47Speaker 1: To urge us, to correct us, to corral us, to call.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Us to repentance, to call us to brokenness.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Here's the other thing. We couldn't rejoice in our victories.
- 12:07Speaker 1: If we couldn't remember. We couldn't see growth that the
- 12:13Speaker 1: Spirit has produced in us if we couldn't remember.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Isn't that good?
- 12:18Speaker 1: Has anybody ever gone back home with those folks and
- 12:24Speaker 1: just had God put you in a closet where you
- 12:27Speaker 1: laid down on your face and said, God, thank you
- 12:31Speaker 1: for removing me from this place. Thank you for getting
- 12:35Speaker 1: me out of here. I remember the first time as
- 12:39Speaker 1: a grown man going back to the streets in South
- 12:43Speaker 1: Central LA where I was raised. I'll never forget that
- 12:46Speaker 1: time and I'll never forget the time in April of
- 12:48Speaker 1: 2006 when I went back and buried my father who
- 12:53Speaker 1: was dead at 55 years old because of an addiction
- 12:57Speaker 1: to cocaine. I'll never forget riding around those streets. I'll
- 13:05Speaker 1: never forget going back home and realizing that that the
- 13:08Speaker 1: gang's not all there. The guys I ran with, the
- 13:13Speaker 1: guys I grew up with, they're not all there. I
- 13:18Speaker 1: stood and preached at my father's funeral. I just had
- 13:24Speaker 1: to go away afterwards in a corner by myself and
- 13:28Speaker 1: lay on my face and weep and weep I remembered
- 13:35Speaker 1: who I was before God saved me You can't have
- 13:41Speaker 1: the memory of my sin I won't let you take
- 13:43Speaker 1: it It reminds me of God's goodness to me. It
- 13:48Speaker 1: reminds me of his grace in my life. It reminds
- 13:51Speaker 1: me of where I was and where I never want
- 13:53Speaker 1: to be again. It reminds me that his work in
- 13:58Speaker 1: me may not be.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Complete, but it is effectual. I'm not who I ought
- 14:03Speaker 2: to be, but hallelujah, I'm not who I was.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Brokenness is an appropriate response when you understand that. That
- 14:23Speaker 1: you create a memory. You create a snapshot and it
- 14:27Speaker 1: stays with you. And not so that we can dwell
- 14:34Speaker 1: on it and beat ourselves up. But brokenness is important. Thirdly,
- 14:42Speaker 1: brokenness over our sin is appropriate because our sin is
- 14:45Speaker 1: an affront to a holy God Listen to what he says.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Against you and you only I have sinned and done
- 14:53Speaker 1: what is evil in your sight so that you may
- 14:56Speaker 1: be justified in your words and blameless in your judgments. Behold,
- 15:00Speaker 1: I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin did
- 15:03Speaker 1: my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in
- 15:07Speaker 1: the inward being. You, you teach me wisdom in the
- 15:11Speaker 1: secret heart. In other words, here's what God desires and
- 15:15Speaker 1: God delights in, and yet, against you I've sinned. Notice
- 15:19Speaker 1: he didn't say against Bathsheba I've sinned. Against Uriah I
- 15:22Speaker 1: have sinned. No, against you, God, and ultimately against you
- 15:27Speaker 1: only I have sinned. Because who was Uriah but the
- 15:30Speaker 1: man that you created? Who was Bathsheba but the servant
- 15:36Speaker 1: of the Most High God I sinned against? That's what
- 15:41Speaker 1: worries me about the rebels of the world. That's what
- 15:45Speaker 1: worries me about those who don't want to preach on
- 15:48Speaker 1: sin because people already know that they're bad.
- 15:51Speaker 2: No, we don't. No, we don't.
- 16:00Speaker 1: We watch the nightly news and we think those people
- 16:02Speaker 1: are bad, not us. We don't recognize that we have
- 16:10Speaker 1: sinned against the holy and righteous God.
- 16:15Speaker 2: We don't get that. We don't see that.
- 16:19Speaker 1: But I despise the picture that's painted in our culture
- 16:24Speaker 1: of this sissified, needy Jesus.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Amen? And that's who he is.
- 16:31Speaker 1: He's a sissified, needy Jesus. He's just yearning for you.
- 16:37Speaker 1: He's longing for you. He wants friendship and relationship with you.
- 16:43Speaker 2: He needs you.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Oh, you're breaking his heart. No, he's going to break you. Newsflash.
- 16:58Speaker 1: By definition, God is self-sustaining, self-existent, and self-sufficient. Therefore, by definition,
- 17:06Speaker 1: he needs nothing else. God does not need you. And
- 17:10Speaker 1: he's going to prove it one day because you're going
- 17:12Speaker 1: to die and the world's going to keep on spinning
- 17:15Speaker 1: at the same rate it was before you were here.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And somebody's going to get all your stuff. He's waiting
- 17:30Speaker 1: for you, all right. Revelation 19, beginning of verse 11.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Then I saw heaven opened and behold, a white horse,
- 17:41Speaker 1: the one sitting on it called faithful and true. And
- 17:44Speaker 1: in righteousness, he judges and makes war. He judges and
- 17:47Speaker 1: makes war. It's my God. Yeah, I've got some issues,
- 17:53Speaker 1: but that's all right. His eyes are like a flame
- 17:58Speaker 1: of fire. On his head are many diadems. And he
- 18:02Speaker 1: has a name written that no one knows but himself.
- 18:05Speaker 1: He's clothed in a robe dipped in blood. And the
- 18:09Speaker 1: name by which he is called is the word of God.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And the armies of heaven arrayed in fine linen. white
- 18:16Speaker 1: and pure were following him on white horses from his
- 18:20Speaker 1: mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down
- 18:23Speaker 1: the nations and he will rule them with a rod
- 18:26Speaker 1: of iron he will tread the wine press of the
- 18:29Speaker 1: fury of the wrath of the god almighty on his
- 18:33Speaker 1: robe and on his thigh he has a name written
- 18:37Speaker 1: king of kings and lord of lords that's my jesus
- 18:42Speaker 1: That's the God whom I serve, not the sissified Christ
- 18:46Speaker 1: that's preached in pulpits around the United States of America.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I serve the great God of the universe who gets
- 18:54Speaker 1: angry and pours out his wrath.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I serve the great God of the universe who.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Demonstrated his wrath when he poured it out on his
- 19:02Speaker 1: own son. And it amazes me that we believe this,
- 19:07Speaker 1: that God would crush and kill.
- 19:09Speaker 2: His own son, but let you slide. Not for a minute.
- 19:17Speaker 1: The spotless, sinless lamb of God suffered and bled and
- 19:23Speaker 1: died because of the wrath of God. That propitiation, the
- 19:29Speaker 1: satisfaction of the righteous wrath of God, that's what was
- 19:34Speaker 1: experienced on the cross. How dare we take that lightly?
- 19:41Speaker 1: That's the one against whom you've sinned. Not this sissified
- 19:48Speaker 1: Jesus with hair like the brick. girl with a lamb
- 19:51Speaker 1: across his shoulders. Hands look like he never worked a
- 19:56Speaker 1: day in his life. Uh-uh. When we sin, we sin
- 20:07Speaker 1: against the almighty creator of the universe. the maker of
- 20:12Speaker 1: heaven and earth. And here's the kicker. Though he should
- 20:21Speaker 1: have killed me in my sleep for what I thought, said,
- 20:24Speaker 1: and did on yesterday, yet by his grace, he has
- 20:29Speaker 1: allowed me to live another day. Oh, I think brokenness
- 20:35Speaker 1: is very appropriate. I think when we understand that, Brokenness
- 20:42Speaker 1: is an extremely appropriate response. In fact, what other possible
- 20:47Speaker 1: appropriate response is there but brokenness when we understand that
- 20:52Speaker 1: about our God? Fourthly, and we'll spend a minute here,
- 21:02Speaker 1: not only is sin an affront to a holy God,
- 21:04Speaker 1: but sin is a hindrance to the true worship of God.
- 21:10Speaker 1: brokenness is an appropriate response to sin because sin is
- 21:14Speaker 1: a hindrance to the true worship of God. Now, listen
- 21:17Speaker 1: to what he says here in verses seven through nine.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Don't miss this, please. He says, purge me with hyssop
- 21:27Speaker 1: and I shall be clean. Wash me and I shall
- 21:29Speaker 1: be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Let the bones that you have broken rejoice. There's no rejoicing,
- 21:39Speaker 1: there's no joy, there's no gladness. He needs that and
- 21:43Speaker 1: only God can provide that. Look at this, verse 9.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Hide your face from my sins and blot out all
- 21:48Speaker 1: my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God,
- 21:51Speaker 1: and renew a right spirit within me. Away from your
- 21:53Speaker 1: presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore
- 21:56Speaker 1: to me the joy of your salvation. Here's the problem.
- 22:04Speaker 1: We've created this system and here's how it goes. We
- 22:09Speaker 1: look upon men as consumers to be satisfied. And we
- 22:14Speaker 1: create services designed for those consumers. And sometimes in these churches,
- 22:21Speaker 1: what we do is we poll the consumers to find out,
- 22:24Speaker 1: what would you like for us to sing for you?
- 22:29Speaker 2: How long would you like for us to preach to you?
- 22:31Speaker 2: 20 minutes? Fine. We'll do it in 17. What kind
- 22:38Speaker 2: of songs do you like?
- 22:40Speaker 1: And so what they do is they'll get a band
- 22:42Speaker 1: up here, you know, they get a bunch of young kids,
- 22:45Speaker 1: you know, their mother's hairdo. Guys who know every member
- 22:54Speaker 1: of U2, but don't know who Horatio Spofford was. I mean,
- 22:57Speaker 1: you know, those guys, they get those guys up there
- 23:00Speaker 1: and they'll rock out for you and play all the
- 23:02Speaker 1: stuff that you like to hear. And you can, you know,
- 23:04Speaker 1: come on, enjoy. It'll be man-centered. And even when it's
- 23:09Speaker 1: not man-centered, that there'll be enough mantras and repetition in
- 23:13Speaker 1: it that you won't even mind that it's not man-centered.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Even then, musically, it'll be man-centered. Even when it's not
- 23:19Speaker 1: lyrically man-centered, we'll do all that for you. We'll keep
- 23:23Speaker 1: changing it for you. We'll keep updating it for you
- 23:25Speaker 1: so that we can continue to satisfy and continue to
- 23:27Speaker 1: keep you coming. Why? Because apart from brokenness, you're incapable
- 23:35Speaker 1: of authentic worship.
- 23:37Speaker 2: You think you're owed something.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And so you come in looking to be satisfied, looking
- 23:47Speaker 1: to be appeased.
- 23:49Speaker 2: But God has a little something to say about that.
- 23:51Speaker 2: In Isaiah chapter one, beginning at verse 10.
- 24:06Speaker 1: He writes, Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers
- 24:09Speaker 1: of Sodom. Give ear to the teaching of your God,
- 24:12Speaker 1: you people of Gomorrah. By the way, Sodom and Gomorrah
- 24:14Speaker 1: are toast already. He's talking to Israel. What to me
- 24:22Speaker 1: is the multitude of your sacrifices, says the Lord? I've
- 24:26Speaker 1: had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat
- 24:28Speaker 1: of well-fed beasts.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I do not delight in the blood of bulls or
- 24:33Speaker 2: lambs or goats. Does that sound familiar?
- 24:35Speaker 1: That's what's happening at the end of Psalm 51. When
- 24:40Speaker 1: you come to appear before me, who has required of
- 24:43Speaker 1: you this trampling of my courts? That's what God calls it.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Trampling of my courts. That's what's happening all.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Over our land.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Trampling of my courts. That's what God calls it. People
- 25:01Speaker 1: call it relevant.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Contemporary.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Now. Now. And again, I'm not talking about the age
- 25:09Speaker 1: of a song. That's not what I'm talking about here.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I'm talking about a theology of worship that is completely man-centered.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I'm talking about a service that is openly identified as
- 25:24Speaker 1: having lost sinners as its target and not the God
- 25:30Speaker 1: of the universe who is the only one worthy of
- 25:33Speaker 1: our worship. That's what I'm talking about. You see, without
- 25:41Speaker 1: a sense of brokenness over our sin, all we have
- 25:47Speaker 1: is the appeasement of the.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Tyrannical old man. And appeasement never works for long.
- 25:59Speaker 1: It is only when we experience genuine brokenness that authentic
- 26:05Speaker 1: worship makes any sense at all.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Then and only then does it make sense.
- 26:16Speaker 1: In fact, it's when we come to that place of brokenness,
- 26:19Speaker 1: where we come to the end of ourselves, where we're
- 26:21Speaker 1: crushed under the weight of our own sin, that we're
- 26:24Speaker 1: actually able to magnify the Lord. But when we come
- 26:28Speaker 1: to the end of ourselves, it's only then that we
- 26:32Speaker 1: see the matchless majesty of Christ. And it's only then
- 26:38Speaker 1: in our brokenness that we recognize the answer to our problem.
- 26:42Speaker 1: And I'll do this. Just look at this for me,
- 26:45Speaker 1: if you will. Go back to our text. And I
- 26:47Speaker 1: want you to look at the verbs here. Verse one,
- 26:53Speaker 1: have mercy, blot out. Verse two, wash me. Verse seven,
- 27:00Speaker 1: purge me, wash me. Verse 8, let me hear. Verse 9,
- 27:05Speaker 1: hide your face. Verse 10, create in me. Verse 11,
- 27:08Speaker 1: cast me not. Verse 12, restore to me. Verse 14,
- 27:13Speaker 1: deliver me. Verse 15, open my lips. In other words,
- 27:18Speaker 1: what's happened? David recognizes that everything.
- 27:22Speaker 2: He needs can only be found in God.
- 27:28Speaker 1: But before we come to brokenness, we believe that we
- 27:32Speaker 1: can make it happen. Are you right with God? Yes,
- 27:38Speaker 1: I prayed a prayer. Are you right with God? Yes,
- 27:42Speaker 1: I've rededicated my life. Are you right with God? Yes,
- 27:45Speaker 1: I've been having my quiet time. Are you right with God?
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yes, I've been, I, I, I, I, I. David says no.
- 27:53Speaker 1: No.
- 27:58Speaker 2: There's no I.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I can't do this. I've seen what I can do.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I don't want what I can do. I'm sick of
- 28:08Speaker 1: what I can do. I'm broken over what I can do.
- 28:12Speaker 1: But I'm not letting go. I'm not giving up. Because
- 28:15Speaker 1: I've also seen what you can do. I need you
- 28:19Speaker 1: to watch me. I need you to cleanse me. I
- 28:23Speaker 1: need you to purge me. I need you to restore me.
- 28:27Speaker 1: I need you to create in me. I need you
- 28:31Speaker 1: to make me whole. I need you to love me.
- 28:34Speaker 1: I need you to forgive me. I need you to
- 28:37Speaker 1: save me. I need you to wash me. I need
- 28:40Speaker 1: you to pick. I need you, you God, because in
- 28:45Speaker 1: and of myself, all I can do is continue to
- 28:51Speaker 1: crumble under the weight of my own blood guiltiness.
- 28:59Speaker 2: How is that ever going to happen?
- 29:04Speaker 1: How is it ever going to happen when we continue
- 29:07Speaker 1: to paint this picture of the sissified Christ who.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Is so empty and weak and needy How's it going
- 29:20Speaker 2: to happen?
- 29:22Speaker 1: If we are actually communicating to people that brokenness is
- 29:26Speaker 1: not of God. It's actually an inappropriate response to sin.
- 29:37Speaker 2: You're a Christian. You're beyond that. May it never be.
- 29:48Speaker 1: May I never get over the fact that God saved
- 29:51Speaker 1: a wretched sinner like me. May I never get over
- 29:57Speaker 1: the fact that he allowed me to see another day
- 30:03Speaker 1: May I never get over the fact that he's patient
- 30:06Speaker 1: with me, that he's long-suffering with me, and that in
- 30:09Speaker 1: me dwells nothing, nothing that can satisfy him. May I
- 30:18Speaker 1: never get over being broken over my sin. May I never,
- 30:25Speaker 1: ever become complacent. May I never, ever Stop realizing the
- 30:31Speaker 1: incredible distance between me and my Jesus because that's the
- 30:36Speaker 1: only way I appreciate the distance he traveled to make
- 30:40Speaker 1: me his child. Yes, brothers and sisters, brokenness is an
- 30:50Speaker 1: appropriate response to sin. It's the only appropriate response to sin.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Not to wallow in it. Because the beauty in this
- 31:02Speaker 1: picture is he's crushed under the weight of his sin,
- 31:05Speaker 1: but God doesn't keep him there. It's only there that
- 31:09Speaker 1: he is able to worship rightly. Brokenness is not just
- 31:15Speaker 1: for you to feel bad. Brokenness is to get you
- 31:22Speaker 1: in the place where you understand the magnitude of God's
- 31:25Speaker 1: grace and mercy. And this is what's so sad about
- 31:30Speaker 1: what's going on. In the name of grace, people are being.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Robbed of it. Because what grace.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Is there in the God who needs me so badly,
- 31:47Speaker 1: yearns for me so desperately? No, I'm the one who
- 31:51Speaker 1: just showed grace to him because he was so needy
- 31:55Speaker 1: before I came along. You can have that, Jesus, all day,
- 32:05Speaker 1: every day, and twice on Sunday. Give me the one
- 32:07Speaker 1: on the white horse.
