- 0:00Before we leave, can we play a game together?
- 0:03Sure.
- 0:04I love games.
- 0:04I could go in trying to look younger.
- 0:07Prime or pass.
- 0:09Pass.
- 0:10You should always want to look as.
- 0:13Best you can, matching your lipstick to your outfit.
- 0:16Prime or pass.
- 0:17Prime.
- 0:18If it's in the same family.
- 0:19Full coverage foundation after 50.
- 0:22Absolutely.
- 0:23Prime.
- 0:24Overlining your lips to make them look bigger.
- 0:26Primer.
- 0:27Pass.
- 0:28You're gonna think this is getting ridiculous.
- 0:30Prime.
- 0:30Lip liner is back.
- 0:31Bigger and better than ever.
- 0:33But not doing the way we did it back in the day.
- 0:37Not overdoing it.
- 0:38False lashes for daytime.
- 0:41Primer.
- 0:41Pass.
- 0:41Absolutely prime.
- 0:43Perfect makeup or great lighting.
- 0:45Perfect makeup.
- 0:46I agree.
- 0:47Before we leave, can we play a game together?
- 0:50A makeup game.
- 0:51Okay.
- 0:53I love games.
- 0:54Okay, Good, Good.
- 0:55I thought you would.
- 0:56After I looked at your.
- 0:57I'm like, I bet she'll be up for a game.
- 0:59Okay.
- 1:01So the name of this game is called prime or pass.
- 1:05So it is a beauty rules game.
- 1:07So I'm going to throw you a beauty trend or technique, and you just have a choice of saying prime or pass.
- 1:15So if you like it, it's prime.
- 1:16If it's pass, you can let it go.
- 1:19All right, here we go.
- 1:21Shimmer on mature eyelids.
- 1:24Prime or pass.
- 1:26Prime.
- 1:27I agree.
- 1:29Black eyeliner on the lower waterline.
- 1:33Primer.
- 1:33Pass.
- 1:35Prime.
- 1:35Okay.
- 1:36You just have to be really okay on the waterline.
- 1:39Not.
- 1:39Not underneath.
- 1:41Okay.
- 1:42Because you see, that can do inside.
- 1:44Okay.
- 1:45But you have to be soft underneath.
- 1:47Okay.
- 1:48Very soft Would be my first recommendation.
- 1:51Okay.
- 1:51It's not a definitive rule that you shouldn't.
- 1:54Okay.
- 1:54Especially if you have big eyes.
- 1:56Right.
- 1:56It works, right?
- 1:57It could work.
- 1:58Absolutely.
- 1:59It's luxury.
- 2:01Full coverage foundation after 50.
- 2:04Absolutely prime.
- 2:06Prime.
- 2:07But is not heavy and cakey looking.
- 2:09Yes.
- 2:09100% over lining your lips to make them look bigger.
- 2:14Primer.
- 2:14Pass.
- 2:15You're going to think this is getting ridiculous.
- 2:17Prime.
- 2:18Okay.
- 2:18I mean, lip liner is back bigger and better than ever.
- 2:22But not doing it the way we did it back in the day.
- 2:26Not overdoing it.
- 2:28Just working on the outside and doing it ever so slightly deeper than the color lipstick you're wearing.
- 2:35You can cheat and make your lips look fuller.
- 2:39So that would.
- 2:40If done right, it's a prime.
- 2:42Wrong.
- 2:42It's a pass.
- 2:43Pass.
- 2:44Okay.
- 2:45I know we went through, like, a good.
- 2:46What was it, like, one or two decades where no one was using lip liner and it was just like the smudgy lipstick.
- 2:52And I'm glad lip liner's back.
- 2:54Oh, me too.
- 2:55Right.
- 2:56Contouring after 50, it's prime.
- 2:59Pass.
- 3:01Because, I mean, prime.
- 3:04If you are very square, if you need wring out the cheekbone because the volume of your face is not there the way it used to be.
- 3:14It depends on the face.
- 3:16As I'm speaking as a makeup artist.
- 3:18Right.
- 3:19I would say more of a pass than a prime because it's done wrong.
- 3:24It's bad.
- 3:25It's also an extra step that we don't really need.
- 3:28Okay.
- 3:29So we don't really need to contour as much.
- 3:31Okay.
- 3:32Yeah.
- 3:32I always tell women, if you're wearing blush, put on blush in a way where your cheekbone shows.
- 3:40So not just like, putting a little here and a little here and a little here.
- 3:43Like, be thoughtful about your application.
- 3:46If you put it on the way you would contour, then your cheekbone will look defined and enhanced.
- 3:53And you don't need to do contour.
- 3:55Yes.
- 3:55Okay.
- 3:56This is a good point.
- 3:56I'm going to, like, put my little contour stick down.
- 4:01You don't have to.
- 4:02Okay.
- 4:02Just maybe a touch.
- 4:03Maybe a touch.
- 4:04False lashes for daytime prime or pass.
- 4:07Absolutely prime.
- 4:09Have fun.
- 4:11Not to stop the game for a minute, but I would say that if you do everything thoughtfully and it's not like these, like, when I see people with those big fake lashes, it's like, you do know people realize
- 4:25you're wearing fake lashes.
- 4:26Right.
- 4:26I just want to make sure.
- 4:27And if you don't mind that look, you go, girl.
- 4:31But, you know, if you don't have lashes, and that happens a lot after years of, like, pulling on our eyes, a natural pair of false lashes during the day, if it makes you feel more confident and you did
- 4:44them right where they're put on.
- 4:46Right.
- 4:46Go for it.
- 4:47Yes.
- 4:47Okay.
- 4:48I need to, you know, I've been using, like, the single lashes that individuals they know.
- 4:53No, I need to learn how to do the individuals, because when I've done them, they kind of get all wonky.
- 4:57They're like, there's some right here.
- 4:59Yes.
- 5:00Is there a secret?
- 5:01Very hard.
- 5:01Yeah, very hard.
- 5:02Why do you want to use only individuals?
- 5:05Why wouldn't you just do a stress strip?
- 5:06I think the strip is just always the way to go.
- 5:08I was, like, trying to get all, like, okay, I need to try individuals.
- 5:11Right.
- 5:12Okay.
- 5:12So I'm going to do the strip strap.
- 5:13Right.
- 5:14Because even with the individuals, if you are doing that.
- 5:17Because you think, I only need a few, and it will be more natural when you put them on.
- 5:22Even if they're the short ones, they will look different than the rest of the lash.
- 5:27If you're only using them on the outer corner.
- 5:30So then you wind up having to put it across the whole thing.
- 5:33And one's going to get wonky, if not more so.
- 5:36And if one falls off, you're in trouble.
- 5:39So I would say a strip is quicker, faster.
- 5:43And they make so many great ones now.
- 5:45They do.
- 5:46They really do.
- 5:47It's so easy, right?
- 5:48You just kind of throw the glue on and you stick it on.
- 5:50It's not easy.
- 5:51It's not easy.
- 5:53I have so many people asking me, like, what am I doing wrong?
- 5:56You.
- 5:57It's a practice and it's a skill that will take time.
- 6:01So do it when you're not going out, practice a lot when you don't have to be somewhere and until you master it.
- 6:09And then once you master it, you can wear it comfortably when you go out.
- 6:14Do you usually cut yours too, to, like size it, or do you just usually.
- 6:17I don't need to.
- 6:18Okay.
- 6:19The ones I buy because I know now what to buy from.
- 6:22My shape buys never need to be cut.
- 6:26They're shorter in here and then they flutter out to a fuller.
- 6:30But they're.
- 6:31They're not heavy.
- 6:32They're.
- 6:33They're more natural looking.
- 6:34Natural.
- 6:34But always carry glue with you.
- 6:38And you know those pointed things that you clean your teeth with?
- 6:41Yes.
- 6:42They're so convenient.
- 6:43Yes.
- 6:44Take one of those.
- 6:45Okay.
- 6:45With the point on it.
- 6:47Keep your glue with you and from time to time, check in a mirror because it could go all wrong if half of it is hanging off and it could come off easily.
- 6:59Your eye waters by accident.
- 7:01You touch your eye.
- 7:02So there's those scary mistakes that could happen.
- 7:07What is in your emergency makeup bag?
- 7:09Do you carry one in person?
- 7:11Yeah, always.
- 7:12I'm sorry.
- 7:12Okay.
- 7:13I don't even have a makeup bag, so I just throw in my handbag.
- 7:17I have my baked double take foundation.
- 7:22Because if I get warm and a little perspiry or whatever it may be, I want to blot myself.
- 7:30If I want to touch up, like, because I got dark under my eyes, I use that foundation right under my eyes.
- 7:38I carry lipstick, lip liner.
- 7:42I always have a magnifying.
- 7:43I have the compact that has magnifying and regular small ones.
- 7:47I'm trying to think what else.
- 7:49That's really all I carry for touching up.
- 7:52But then if I go a night out and I have to look, I'll take a little blush also.
- 7:59And that's it.
- 8:02Okay.
- 8:02Okay, that's good.
- 8:03That's a good solid kit.
- 8:05Yeah.
- 8:07Matching your lipstick to your outfit.
- 8:09Primer.
- 8:10Pass.
- 8:10What was the person prime is yes.
- 8:13By the way, that.
- 8:14That happens, too, at my age.
- 8:16Prime.
- 8:17If it's in the same family.
- 8:19Okay.
- 8:19Like, I wouldn't wear anything orangey, given that I'm wearing pink.
- 8:24But I don't need to match the exact color.
- 8:27Okay.
- 8:28As long as I'm in a mauve, a rose, a pink, and it complements the color.
- 8:33You should use lipstick.
- 8:34It's the one piece of makeup that should enhance and accessorize with your wardrobe.
- 8:40Not your blush, not your eyeshadow, but lipstick.
- 8:43Oh.
- 8:44Cause it's the most dominant thing on your face, so you should always be thinking about how it's going to come.
- 8:50I always leave this off till after I get dressed and decide what I'm wearing.
- 8:54Then I pick a lipstick out that will complement my outfit.
- 8:57That's a great tip because you think maybe you think your whole face needs to somehow coordinate with what you're wearing with your eye makeup and everything.
- 9:04But that's a great point.
- 9:05Point that it should be the lipstick.
- 9:08Just the lipstick.
- 9:09Good.
- 9:09Okay.
- 9:10That's a great tip.
- 9:11Keeping the same makeup routine you've had for 20 years.
- 9:14Primer.
- 9:15I know.
- 9:15That's a yes.
- 9:16Do you change up.
- 9:18How often are you.
- 9:19I mean, you probably change up a lot, but, like, what would you say to the woman out there listening?
- 9:23How often should she be changing up her.
- 9:25Her?
- 9:26Well, if you're looking in the mirror or somebody is gently saying to you, I think you are wearing too bright a blush, or your foundation looks heavy, or if you feel that way or it's cakey, or your lipstick
- 9:41is feathering and migrating, or your liner is too dark around your eyes, I think sometimes we don't see ourselves, and we're used to a habit of how we make up ourselves and we think it's right.
- 9:55I know as a makeup artist, when I changed a few things on women's faces and it was change for them, it was eyebrow shape.
- 10:05When I did their eyebrows, when I put lipstick color on, that's different from what they always wear or shape their lip differently than what they always.
- 10:14Those were the things.
- 10:15They were like, oh, no, no.
- 10:17This is the color I want.
- 10:18This is what I wear, and my eyebrows look too dark.
- 10:22But you need to change it or let a makeup artist do you that you trust and know or gets recommended and go throughout the day and see what people say to you who know you.
- 10:37Because if you gave positive feedback, that's big.
- 10:41That's big.
- 10:41That's a great meter of how to, like, judge something like that for sure.
- 10:45Trying to look Younger, prime or pass.
- 10:48Pass, Pass.
- 10:51I mean, embrace who you are.
- 10:53Listen, do you should always want to look as best you can and wear makeup that enhances your skin, not covers your skin.
- 11:03But don't try to look at trends that someone who is much more young than yourself is.
- 11:11Meet your.
- 11:12Meet the needs of your skin and where you are in your life.
- 11:17And with makeup.
- 11:19Yes.
- 11:20It's supposed to be fun.
- 11:21You're supposed to enjoy it.
- 11:22Right.
- 11:23Just 100% and play with it and have a good time.
- 11:26Doesn't mean those.
- 11:27Seriously?
- 11:28Yes.
- 11:28You know it's wiped off.
- 11:30Exactly.
- 11:31It's not stuck to your face forever.
- 11:32Right.
- 11:33Okay, so which one do you prefer, Perfect makeup or great lighting?
- 11:37Perfect makeup.
- 11:38Okay.
- 11:39Yeah.
- 11:40Okay.
- 11:40Because you're not always going to be in great lighting.
- 11:43So what happens after good lighting and you walk out and the sun's shining on your face or you have to go meet somebody and it's a different set of your makeup?
- 11:53Better be perfect.
- 11:55Here's another little tip.
- 11:57Make yourself up with the harshest light, and that's usually sunlight.
- 12:02So if you can get in front of a window and look at your makeup when you're done, or do your makeup in front of daylight, it's the harshest light.
- 12:11If you look good there, you're going to look right great no matter where you go.
- 12:15But if it's nighttime and you're making yourself up, use a lighted makeup mirror that gives you daytime light.
- 12:23So which is the strongest?
- 12:24Okay.
- 12:25And my other tip is, I know women don't want to do it.
- 12:29Not at all.
- 12:30Women want to do it.
- 12:31They don't want to have to look into a magnifying strength that they see too much because it scares them.
- 12:38It's like, I didn't know I had that.
- 12:41But if you can make yourself up in the strongest possible magnification that you need and your makeup looks good there, you're golden.
- 12:52That is a fantastic tip.
- 12:53I'm like, note to self.
- 12:55I'll be doing my makeup in front of my window from here on out.
- 12:59Or take the mirror to the window.
- 13:01Yes.
- 13:01Okay.
- 13:02Afterwards.
- 13:03Now, if you could only keep one product forever, would it be lipstick or mascara?
- 13:09Ooh, that's such a good question.
- 13:11Right?
- 13:12Lipstick.
- 13:14Yep.
- 13:15Because you can always put on a pair of sunnies.
- 13:17It's such a good point.
- 13:19We can always cover up up there.
- 13:20It's like you gotta have your mouth,.
- 13:22You know, visible 100%.
- 13:25Women all over New York wearing fabulous sunnies with a great mouth, and nobody knows what's happening underneath here.
- 13:33Yes, that's such a good point.
- 13:34It's like a cheat code.
- 13:35You can just do, you know, do your mouth, do it quick, throw on the sunglasses and you're good to go.
- 13:40Out the door.
- 13:41That's right.
- 13:42Well, Laura, it's been amazing.
- 13:45Thank you so much for joining me on the iconic Midlife.
- 13:48It's been amazing.
