- 1:34is The Bomb Steer Matter from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar howdymus
- 1:45dollar. My name is Jake Dennim. I own a cattle ranch out here
- 1:48in Creag, Colorado. How'd you like to come out here and see me
- 1:51Colorado? That's right, I have a policy. You're going to be a
- 1:53company, try Western Off Silver and Denver. Well, what seems to be
- 1:57the trouble, mister Denham? Trouble? Oh, nothing like that, not
- 2:00at all. Then why have you called me? Well? You see,
- 2:02the brand I use in my beef cattle is a lazy JD. Yeah,
- 2:07you said your name is Jake Denner. That's right. But JD is your
- 2:09initials too? Oh yeah, yeah, and the lazy part fits me to
- 2:14a t. But now why have you called me? Leg? You see,
- 2:16I listened to your radio program every week, all those insurance cases you
- 2:20handle all over the country, glad to hear it, and I just well,
- 2:23I thought the lazy JD being your initials too, and all the local
- 2:28color out here, and well, maybe you'd like to come and get some
- 2:31local atmosphere or what are your starting Oh no, wait a minute, mister
- 2:35Dnham, If you have some insurance matter you'd like me to investigate? Oh
- 2:38no, no, I told you why I thought you ought to come,
- 2:39so can you right away? You sure there's nothing wrong out there? No,
- 2:45Like I said, A lot of local color, A nice place to
- 2:46stay at the ranch, how about it? Well, I've a couple of
- 2:51days work on some reports to finish up. Then right after that, huh
- 2:53oh, good good, I'll be waiting for you. Goodbye. Oh look,
- 2:59and everything's really okay. Huh right, mister Denham, I think you're
- 3:07lying through your teeth. Bob Bailey and The Exciting Adventures of the Man with
- 3:19the Action Fact expense account, America's fabulous freelance insurance investigator is truly Johnny Dollar.
- 3:30Now act one of yours, Truly Johnny Dollars. Expense account submitted by
- 3:49Special Investigator Johnny Dollar the tri Western Life and Casually Insurance Company, Home Office,
- 3:53Denver, Colorado. Following is an account of expenses incurred during my investigation
- 3:59of the Bumsteer matter. Expense account out of one three seventy long distance call
- 4:08to hal Vursky, my contact to try Western and Denver. Johnny good to
- 4:13hear Brodian, you want this neighborhood. No, I'm still in Hartford,
- 4:15Hell. I want you to okay. An expense account for me. Well,
- 4:18now that depends. Listen, you know a client of yours for the
- 4:21name of Jake Denham. Yes, as I recall, he owns a big
- 4:25cattle ranch over here, the little town of Craig. Huh, Gary's a
- 4:28straight life for something like forty fifty thousand. Well, look, I got
- 4:30a phone call from him begging me to come out there and see him.
- 4:33Oh, something wrong, he says, not, but I don't believe it.
- 4:36Do you any reason to think something is wrong? Well, only the
- 4:40half baked excuse he gave me for wanting to see me. Look, now,
- 4:43I realize this is just a hunch, but certainly sounds like it to
- 4:46me. But my hunches have saved your company a lot of dough on occasion.
- 4:48So how about it. Okay, put it this way, if you
- 4:53run into something out there and clear it up, we'll pay the break and
- 4:56not well, you just go ahead and have yourself a vacation at your own
- 5:00expense. Oh, now, why don't you relax that iron grip on the
- 5:03purse strings for a change? What what would you do? Okay? Okay,
- 5:08But I warn you how if this does turn into a case for your
- 5:11company, my expense account is going to knock you right off your feet.
- 5:15Bye bye, Johnny. It took me nearly four days to clare if the
- 5:21reports I had to finish. I wish now it happened that I had left
- 5:25Hartford immediately expense account had them two one hundred and thirty three dollars plain flair
- 5:30and all the incidentals I could think of. Hartford to Denver. I got
- 5:32there shortly after seven am. I had them three fifty dollars deposit on a
- 5:36drive your own car, in which I promptly headed north and west on Highway
- 5:40forty. That is, after getting out of the traffic in Denver itself.
- 5:44And believe me, that town hasn't. The two hundred mile drive to Craig
- 5:47was routine, except for the lush green hills, the snowtop mountains, the
- 5:53vast meadows and forests. Colorful Colorado they call it, and it's sure it
- 5:58is. Finally, about noon, I pulled in the Craig and stopped at
- 6:01the Cosgrive Hotel for lunch. That's not him. Four three fifty. From
- 6:05the waitress, I got directions to the Lazy JD Ranch, about eight miles
- 6:10out on the Amber River, just off Route seven. Eight nine. You
- 6:13want some dessert? Oh no, thanks, this is fine. Hey you
- 6:18one of the relatives. Relatives, how stars that you're too late? Too
- 6:23late for what? It was real beautiful though half the town turned out,
- 6:27but most of the big ranchers. What are you talking about? Oh my
- 6:30gosh, it's a too one thirty. Look, I'm not supposed to be
- 6:31on duty now, and I got a date with my bike friends. They
- 6:34well out a second just paid a cashier in the law. But look,
- 6:39okay, I paid my check to the cashier, went out to my car,
- 6:47climbed in and headed for the lazy JD. That must have been several
- 6:51thousand acres to the ranch, all rich, green, healthy looking pasture.
- 6:57Land lord knows how many ahead of beef fantels. The main ranch house was
- 7:00a rather small but well kept. It fair and he had a gate to
- 7:03the roads in the highway. And then I saw it, a long piece
- 7:16of black crape hanging on the door front. Yes, how do you do?
- 7:29My name is Dollar, Johnny Donner, Oh, Johnny Dollars. Why
- 7:33didn't you come before? What he begged you to come to me, to
- 7:36come right away? Yes, but I told him, why didn't you you
- 7:41might have saved him. Saved him, Yes, saved him. We buried
- 7:45him this morning, and I think he was murdered. Act two of yours,
- 8:03truly, Johnny Dollar in a moment. The American writer Christopher Morley once
- 8:09wrote, when you sell a man a book, you don't sell him just
- 8:13twelve ounces of paper, ink and gloom. You sell him a whole new
- 8:18way of life unquote. Now that goes double when you give not sell a
- 8:24book, but the gift of five hundred and fifty books the little children increases
- 8:31the legacy tenfold. Near the end of nineteen sixty, the employees of the
- 8:37Chase Manhattan Bank started a Peopled People program with such a gift to school children
- 8:43of a town in Tanganyika. It's on the southeast coast of Africa. And
- 8:48I'll give you an idea how the books were received by the children. Let
- 8:52me first quote from Francis Bacon. He's an English writer of a few centuries
- 8:56back. He said, some books are to be tasted, others to be
- 9:01swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. In the past,
- 9:09children in Tanganyika may have done a little tasting and chewing and a little swallowing
- 9:13and digesting that there's one certain thing. They wound up devouring the books they
- 9:20received from the United States, and they did so much of it that they
- 9:26the ones in high school anyway, were able to reach the level of English
- 9:30children their age and pass the exams at the same time. It takes a
- 9:35lot of book learning, As they said, the gift of these books from
- 9:39the United States of America may have seen a small thing to the senders,
- 9:45but the boys in Tanganyika who received them know that they've opened a whole new
- 9:50way of life. They've greatly increased understanding in the classroom of freedom, the
- 9:56right of all men everywhere, and no two of yours truly. Johnny Dollar
- 10:01and the bum steer Mutter. The tall, beautiful girl standing in the doorway
- 10:07of the ranch house with the lazy jd outside of Craig Colorado was dressed in
- 10:11black. The right about her eyes showed that you've been crying, but there
- 10:16were no tears in them now, Jake Jennaen was my father, mister Dollar,
- 10:20I'm Virginia. And do you think he was murdered? Why do you
- 10:22think he called and begged you to come out here? Any idea who might
- 10:26have done it. Yes, Big Mike, Mike crazy. He owns to
- 10:30see Lucky Star and one Stone every other ranch around here, and he will
- 10:33unless somebody stops him. How did your father die? And track? That's
- 10:37what they said it was. I thought that was a disease of cattle people
- 10:41too, They get infected from the cattle, and that's what happened to your
- 10:45father, That's what they say. But there's no amtracks around here. Our
- 10:48ranch is clean. Look, let's go inside and sit down and talk about
- 10:50this. Sure, I'll talk about it. Only somebody will listen here,
- 10:56Johnny Nice, Are you all alone? Now that Dad's gone? He and
- 11:01I ran the ranch. Now it's up to me with you. Virginia,
- 11:07were you trying to tell me out there that you think somebody tried to infect
- 11:09your herd with anth rex? What would you think? Who is your father's
- 11:13doctor? Doctor Regis Ross from in town? Who are you? My name
- 11:18is Dollar Insurance investigating. So you fellas like pretty fast? Don't you sometimes?
- 11:24Doing all right? Now? Honey? I guess so? I told
- 11:26the hands if you're in full charge now, they'll take their orders from you
- 11:31or from me's from sure? Sure, I guess that's best, thank you
- 11:35to They might as well get used to it because after we're married. Look,
- 11:39honey, why wait any longer. I know this is a bad time
- 11:43to talk about it, but I also know and you know that this is
- 11:46no time for you to try to go it alone. It's what about your
- 11:48medical school? I'll give it up. This is a lot more important than
- 11:54you're a lot more important. Oh look, Jenny, you stalled me for
- 11:58a long long time. I know, Pete, because don't you see I
- 12:03can run this ranch alone. No, you need me, honey, and
- 12:07I'm here to help you. Do you know how Dad felt sure that all
- 12:11I wanted was this ranch, the same as he felt about anybody else who
- 12:13ever came here. Just who are you, Pete? This is Pete Tram
- 12:16johnny Man fiance? I guess that's right. Didn't I see a Kermer ranch
- 12:22on the way out here? A small one? That's right? My pause,
- 12:24he's Karl Kremer. Or what do you think caused the death of Virginia's
- 12:28dad? Just what everybody says, mister Donnar galloping anthrax from that Herford?
- 12:33Then why did he send for mister Dollar to come? I'm afraid we'll never
- 12:37know, honey, Well I do. It's because he knew something was going
- 12:41to happen to him. Where is that stair now? Buried on orders from
- 12:45the VET and the State inspector. Mister dollar, Now, you said investigator,
- 12:52hadn't you better talk to doctor Ross? Yeah? I guess, so
- 12:56let me have his address. Sure, I'll write it down for it.
- 13:00And while you're at it, tell me where I can find the veterinarian.
- 13:05And that's stayed inspected too, huh? Sure? Why not? When I
- 13:13left them a few minutes later, people was still making it quiet. But
- 13:16I must say effective pitch for Virginia's hands expense con had him five ten cents
- 13:22from a phone call to the state infector. He told me he'd never seen
- 13:26the infected steer on the lazy JD, but he was confined to his bed
- 13:30at the time. I called the vet's office and he was expected back shortly.
- 13:35So I sat around a hotel lobby and glanced over some magazine and then
- 13:39in one of them I found an article that made my eyes fairly pop out
- 13:43of my head. I had them six. I called the VET again.
- 13:45He was in. He taught me this entire essterday. I was about to
- 13:50drive over to the Sea Lucky Star range for dinner. Mike Craven and I
- 13:54old friends, that's all. Yes, it was in his new room together
- 13:56at college. Oh, I see, I understand you other man who spotted
- 14:01the anthrax out of the Lazy d yes, it is well just that one
- 14:05heard it. Oh, never got the human. I'll never know the rest
- 14:07of that herds absolutely clean that pool. Jake Denham too, You think he
- 14:13became infected from that steer? Well, how else could it be? Galloping
- 14:18end trucks? Doctor? Where is that steer buried? You know I had
- 14:22it buried myself. It's some miles out in the far corner of the Lazy
- 14:26JD property and fall in the Sea Lucky Star and call out your dinna date.
- 14:31You and I are going out to take a look at that carcason.
- 14:33Well no, just imagine, investigator, did you say? That's right?
- 14:39I suppose you have some power what I don't have I can get. Tell
- 14:45me, doctor, is there some reason why you don't want me to see
- 14:48the carcass of that Steer's let's go along the way. We've pick up two
- 15:00fellows who were handy with pick and shovel, it was almost dark now,
- 15:03so I bought a couple of powerful flashlight in one of the local hardware stores
- 15:07that item seven nine twenty five. It took a couple of hours for the
- 15:11two men to dig down to the carcass of the steer, but they finally
- 15:15exposed one flank of the unfortunate animal. Yeah, so you you sure planet
- 15:18this critter, deep doc part. I mean, give us a few more
- 15:22minutes. We were having no wait, Chris Dollar, come down here into
- 15:28the hole. Sure, Oh, what's the man that the color of that
- 15:37Caucasus and understands what are you talking about? This doesn't make sense. The
- 15:43deteriation, cutrefaction, it always occurs, and it simply isn't here. You
- 15:50mean, it's possible that was an anthrax killed this steer, But I'm sure
- 15:54that all the symptoms, the swillings in the subcuctenus connected tissues in the interstices
- 16:02of the muscles and emphatic glens in the membranes of the mountain too. They
- 16:07were all there, and they were a demothist too. But some poison have
- 16:12possibly produced those symptoms. Look, I read in the magazine this afternoon that
- 16:18strictly often produces symptoms very much like those of tetanus. Lock yow is that's
- 16:22true? Are a poison that would good heaven? Yeah? Well I haven't
- 16:27heard of it since my college days. Quintennigen souliphigh? But why good question?
- 16:36No dollar, because it wouldn't explain me the death of old Jake Denham
- 16:40If it was anthex? I was he poisoned? Too? Good heavens?
- 16:44You mean you doctor? The brand on the rump of this animal, Well,
- 16:48that's Denham's own brand of lazy Ja. Yeah, but it looks to
- 16:51me like it was put on over another brand. Yes, yes, sure
- 16:56right? Any way of finding out what the original brand was? No?
- 17:00Yes, yes, missus Allen the other side the inside of a hide might
- 17:04short and doctor, you've got a skinning job to do? Hand me murs
- 17:08bag there, okay, here go to a doctor. Kid that poisons?
- 17:15How much to infect a man? Even a small scratch on the skin,
- 17:19it's sore of enough to be fatal. No wonder the doctor Ross Ross was
- 17:25the one who treated taken him. No wonder we couldn't understand why death came
- 17:29to Wow? Can you see what the original brand was? Yes? Yes,
- 17:37like phrase, sue, let me hold the line up. Oh,
- 17:44I see, but I can't believe it, mister Doll. Pretty clear though,
- 17:48isn't it. See Lucky Star act free of yours truly Johnny Dollar.
- 17:59In a moment a couple of thousand years ago, the ancient sage Diogenes remarked
- 18:04that all things are in common among friends. Ali didn't mean that only material
- 18:11goods were in common among friends, but that they shared their troubles as well.
- 18:17For a long time, the United States Armed Forces have been a friend
- 18:21in time of need, during fires, floods, and pestilence all over the
- 18:26world. Many peoples of the earth have come to believe in the friendship which
- 18:30the U. S. Military personnel have spread for so many years, and
- 18:36the calls for help they answer in time of personal emergency, a response which
- 18:41has always been immediate. Not long ago, a Korean Buddhist nun was suffering
- 18:48from berry berry, an advanced form of acute malnutrition. But she was living
- 18:52in an isolated monastery deep in the Korean hills and valleys. Her sister nuns
- 18:57contacted the nearest Army Signal Corps relay station, and wheels began turning. In
- 19:04no time. An Army helicopter landed at the station's helipad. American soldiers carried
- 19:11the stricken nun to the copter. She was flown to a waiting ambulance and
- 19:15whisked away to the hospital. Her recovery was rapid thanks to the United States
- 19:22Army, her new found friends. Army helicopter men helped in many other ways.
- 19:27Over the one hundred eight islands of the Ryukus that spread from southern Japan
- 19:33to northern Formosa, Army helicopters are constantly whirling their blades as they hop from
- 19:38one island to another on missions of mercy. They bring food donated by American
- 19:44women on Okinawa, or they bring vital medicine to save a life. They
- 19:49also bring friendship, an understanding, and freedom, the right of all men
- 19:56everywhere, no act free of your yours coolly, Johnny Dollar and the bum
- 20:02steer matters right. Looks pretty bad, doesn't the mister Dallar, Yeah,
- 20:15Doc, And looks as though this Herbert Steele was brought over from the sea.
- 20:18Lucky Star was rebranded with a lazy JD was given the poison and make
- 20:22it look like a dynamanthraxis. But Mike Curven wounds the sea, lucky Star.
- 20:26I know him Dollar, knowing the members is our college days, medical
- 20:30college. Oh no, this during the preparatory years. But Dug Mike couldn't
- 20:34have done a pig lankers. Big Mike has wanted to get his hands in
- 20:37the Lazy JD for years. There's the course of a lot of other big
- 20:41ranches. But I'd just take my life on it. He'd never do it.
- 20:45Wait, wait, wait, you should have taken that left turn to
- 20:47get to the sea, Lucky time. That's not where we're heading. Well
- 20:49then where if I remember correctly, it's this road to the right here.
- 20:53Well, you mean the k barcade got any fetter iteas ranch House has done,
- 21:07It won't be for long. But you call this a good ranch?
- 21:11Don you? Who Carl is from? Just a hangar around? He hasn't
- 21:15made the place paved on out there? Who is it Johnny Dollar, Pete?
- 21:22Oh, I want to talk to you. Oh, George, will
- 21:26I'll be right down. Come on, doctor, let's see how the light
- 21:36sweet the flash. I'll do, and we're going on upstairs. Wait down
- 21:41there, I'll be right down. We'll be right up. Well, now,
- 21:42wait a minute, if you don't mind. Wow, wow, wow,
- 21:47nice place you have up here. Look, I asked you to wait
- 21:49down, doctor Cummings. I'm shiry. Ho'd you make up? Was Virginia
- 21:55denhim Pete invincent to marry Inn? That's not your business, mister Dollar.
- 22:00I got what do you want? Pretty nice ranch? To get your hands
- 22:03on that lazy JD. I beg your Pardoner combination bedroom and study. As
- 22:10Virginia told you, I've been going to college. Yeah, medical school,
- 22:15I said, A books you have here? Of course I'll have to give
- 22:18that up now. Well you're going to have to give up a lot of
- 22:22things. What where did you get at, Pete? I wasn't even that
- 22:26stuff? Doctor twim Tannage's sofa? What do you know about? Well,
- 22:33I don't know what you're talking about? Then? Why the marker in this
- 22:34book on toxicology? That was the folliest thing to do, Pete dead give
- 22:40away? I told you, I don't know what you're talking about. Yep,
- 22:45right here Canagan stuff I had never heard of there lying Peach No giving
- 22:52it that Herbert was probably a cinch. Listen to you, But how did
- 22:56you give it to Jake Tennam? Dollar? That's something you'll never live to
- 23:02know. I'm gonna put that thing away. I'll stand back, I said,
- 23:06Look, I get oh nime stock. I guess he'd forgotten all about
- 23:15you until he landed that share and his head. Yes, yes, suppose
- 23:21I'll have to patch this patch. Oh absolutely, you don't have to look
- 23:27nice for the trial, won't he do? Expense a cont hatem eight fifty
- 23:36five ninety five living expenses in Craig while waiting for the autopsy on Jake Denham,
- 23:41And yes, the same drug was used on him as on the Herbert
- 23:44Steer. A small bottle of the rere drug was found in pete Kermis trunk.
- 23:48So Pete's not only lost a chance for a nice ranch, but for
- 23:52living very long expense a con total including incidentals and fairback to Hartford six eighteen
- 23:57fifty. On second thought, how's about just sending that check to the community
- 24:03chest. Then I'll feel a little better about this case and about myself To
- 24:11yours truly, Johnny Dallar. And now here's our star to tell you about
- 24:26next week. Story Next week an old ghost town out in Montana, but
- 24:32one of the ghosts carries a thirty eight coat. Join us won't you Yours
- 24:36Truly Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey, originates in
- 24:45Hollywood. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone, who also wrote tonight's
- 24:48story. Heard in our cast were Virginia Greg Geane Tatum, Will Wright,
- 24:52Jack Edwards, Howard mcneer, Sam Edwards, and Boris Lewis. Be sure
- 24:56to join us next week, same time and station, or another exciting story
- 25:00of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Dan Cumberly speaking, This is the United States
- 25:19Armed Forces Radio and Television Service, Welcome back. Wow. I have to
- 26:48admit that the beginning of this episode, with somebody actually calling Johnny up because
- 26:56they had heard him on the radio program, it had to be one of
- 27:00the most surreally. Word that is often used for more modern shows is meta
- 27:08moments in UH I've had while listening to a radio program. The idea of
- 27:15somebody being a fan of the show and actually calling Johnny Dollar to come out
- 27:21and solve their problem is it's It's just wow that that was an amazing opening.
- 27:30Now, I should say that Johnny Dollar is not the only program UH
- 27:37to make reference to having a radio program. Many of course followed the format
- 27:45of being a bit of a retelling of things that had happened. But this
- 27:52is probably one case where they were very much where people are aware of it.
- 27:57And this is the second time, but this was hardly This was a
- 28:03lot more explicit, you know, right off the bat, listen to the
- 28:07radio program would you like to come out to My Ranch? And I think
- 28:11that the case was very cleverly done. But this was one where pretty much
- 28:21as soon as we met the boyfriend, I was kind of like, Okay,
- 28:27so how did he commit the murder? This was just a matter of
- 28:32guessing, but it was solidly solved and I did like at the end the
- 28:37you know. And this is the second fee that Johnny has given to the
- 28:42community Chess campaign, but this one I think for a different reason. I
- 28:48think that Johnny felt bad about what happened with the man who called him and
- 28:52didn't want to take on payment for it, even though I don't think I
- 29:00think it was really Johnny's fault. Well, Johnny sensed that something was going
- 29:07on, he did have some other things to finish up, and he worked
- 29:12quite a ways just on a hunch. But I think that does show Johnny's
- 29:18general heart attitude, and I think it's definitely a good thing in one of
- 29:25those reasons why we lock him so much. All right, Well, onto
- 29:30listener comments and feedback, and we begin with a comment from Joan regarding the
- 29:37ideal vacation matter. She says, it was a great show. I was
- 29:41really surprised when you said the cleverness of the solution, which you definitely see
- 29:45coming, because all the way along I kept on saying to myself the ideal
- 29:49vacation was just to stay home. Ideal vacation because no one would ever think
- 29:55of looking for him at home. A great show, Adam, as all,
- 30:00Adam, you are the best at finding and presenting to us shows that
- 30:03will hold our interest right to the end. Well, thanks so much,
- 30:08John, And I guess I was a victim of misdirection because while I would
- 30:17myself probably prefer a stay home vacation, they threw up so many things to
- 30:22suggest that he had gone somewhere very nice and where there were going to be
- 30:26a lot of girls, and to find out that he just stayed home,
- 30:36and yeah, fool everybody. Yeah, it was not something I was expecting
- 30:40at all, So they definitely got one over on me. Also, a
- 30:48comment from Bobby Lee who says it was a great, simple story. And
- 30:53then we also had a comment just on Johnny Doller in general from when who
- 31:00says, I'm a young man in my early twenties. After months of listening,
- 31:03I'm finally caught up on yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. It may
- 31:07sound strange, but I found Johnny Doller has had a big influence on my
- 31:12ideas of manliness and how a man should be. That maybe one reason I
- 31:17enjoy it so much. Who knew I could learn so much from a fictional
- 31:19character. Keep up the good work and thanks for all you do well.
- 31:23And I think that at other times, I think, particularly during the Golden
- 31:30Age, there was more of that idea of the heroes representing ideal of goodness
- 31:45and manliness. And of course there were some that are were kind of silly
- 31:53or even a cartoonish, and that's kind of what our culture remembers, somebody
- 32:00who's just, you know, totally totally brawling or bland and with no real
- 32:15show of emotion. But I think that there were characters who were very well
- 32:20craft and well created, and certainly Johnny Dollars Bob Bailey is one of them.
- 32:24And there's I think a great deal of balance about the character. He's
- 32:30obviously not a perfect human being, but he's got a great balance of compassion
- 32:37and toughness. It's something I actually write about in my ebook a little bit
- 32:44in regards to Joe Friday too, But I think with Johnny dollars a balance
- 32:49it's even stronger and mixing in having these different things at work in his life.
- 32:57And certainly, you know, if you're looking for a role model or
- 33:00a picture of what a man could be, if you could do a lot
- 33:04worse than Johnny Dollar, particularly in today's culture. All right, well,
- 33:10that will actually do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with Dragnet
- 33:16and then join us next Friday for another episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar.
