- 0:00Hello. I considered my options before making
- 0:03a choice. But stuff still happened. So what's
- 0:08up? New cat just dropped. You can't have it.
- 0:11But new cat. Roller coaster of emotions. In Bolivia,
- 0:14there is a new cat. Found it. Researchers were
- 0:17going over the genetic code for samples from
- 0:20various cats within the leopard family, the generally
- 0:23spotty boys. I should say the Lepardus genus.
- 0:28Leopardus genus. the genus of leopards. And so
- 0:32the scientists were like, look, we really want
- 0:33to know what's making these kitties want to bop
- 0:35fuzzy things on the head. So they took some DNA
- 0:37samples and checked them out. And when they looked
- 0:39hard enough, they found a new cat. Specifically,
- 0:43they identified a new genetically unique species
- 0:45of cat within this genus that is basically a
- 0:48leopard that is also smaller than a house cat.
- 0:51This little guy is called El Tikalo. T -T -Tilkayo.
- 0:56T -I -L -C -A -Y -O. I did great on that one.
- 1:04Um, it's a good thing that they named it. I probably
- 1:06would have just named it Buster. Which actually
- 1:10I think I'm just gonna call it Buster. The Buster
- 1:12breed of cat can be found in these misty forests
- 1:15of Bolivia where it's prowling around wondering
- 1:18where its dinner is. ever searching for a person
- 1:21sound asleep in their bed so they can jump on
- 1:24their face. We only know of a few of these little
- 1:27guys. It's not like you're gonna go to the pet
- 1:29store and pick yourself up a little mini leopard
- 1:31anytime soon. We've got one in captivity and
- 1:34we saw another and we've got some pictures of
- 1:37some more maybe, but we don't really have, you
- 1:39know, a pet store's worth. But to be clear, also,
- 1:42they're wild animals. Please don't go to Bolivia
- 1:45and find a misty forest. Walk up to a wild cat
- 1:47and try to go pss pss pss pss pss. Not a good
- 1:49idea. That said, they are painfully adorable.
- 1:53And they're literally just like house cats. And
- 1:55there's one at a zoo that's basically just like
- 1:58a cat at a zoo, just hanging out. Neat. Maybe
- 2:02just pause and think about this cat for a little
- 2:04bit longer until you're ready for the next section.
- 2:07Here we go. The United States federal government
- 2:09has been occupying cities across the nation,
- 2:12typically cities that are known for being Democrat
- 2:14-leaning and did not go for Trump. Said another
- 2:17way, the federal government is trying to punish
- 2:19the citizens of given cities based on their politics.
- 2:23Which is fucked. One of the highest profile examples
- 2:25of this would be Washington DC, where we are
- 2:27spending millions of dollars of taxpayer money
- 2:29daily to have the National Guard roam around
- 2:32carrying guns. All the while, there has been
- 2:35no meaningful drop in violent crime in Washington
- 2:37DC, which is purportedly the reason that they're
- 2:40there in the first place. We all know that's
- 2:42not why they're there. Let's just be clear about
- 2:45that one. Let's turn our attention to Memphis,
- 2:48Tennessee, a city that has already seen dropping
- 2:51crime rates since 2024 and throughout 2025, before
- 2:56a task force of federal agents was sent into
- 2:59the city to harass people. The Memphis Safe Task
- 3:03Force is a coalition of local and state police
- 3:07as well as federal agents from across a bunch
- 3:09of different agencies. ICE, HSI, FBI, it's a
- 3:12real who's who of agents that we don't really
- 3:15want mucking around in our business. Americans
- 3:18famously love having the federal government meddle
- 3:20in their day -to -day lives. Memphis is a generally
- 3:23Democrat -leaning city in a Republican -leaning
- 3:26state. It makes sense that they want to punish
- 3:28this place in particular. And so, of course,
- 3:31despite dropping crime rates already happening,
- 3:33they sent in this task force and then claimed
- 3:35responsibility for dropping crime rates. The
- 3:38task force is essentially causing havoc. It's
- 3:40what happened in Minnesota all over again. On
- 3:43August 30th, ICE raided a bar in Memphis and
- 3:46rounded up over 100 people, throwing them in
- 3:48buses and bringing them to detention centers.
- 3:50At time of writing, at least four people have
- 3:53been shot and killed by members of this task
- 3:55force. One of these victims, Tyron Johnson, was
- 3:58shot by a member of the U .S. National Guard,
- 4:01who then lied about it. Accounts from authorities
- 4:03say that Tyron was a direct threat, pulled a
- 4:06gun facing the National Guard member, and so
- 4:08the National Guard member shot him in the chest
- 4:09to take care of the situation. One problem. The
- 4:12medical examiner ruled that he was shot in the
- 4:15back and the chest was an exit wound. So I have
- 4:20some questions, as does his family and lawyers.
- 4:23To be clear, they said that he reached for a
- 4:25gun in Tennessee, the states where I would bet
- 4:29money that there are more guns than pants. Can
- 4:33someone pull that stat, actually? Another case
- 4:36involved the killing of Darren Pegram. A DEA
- 4:39agent went to a Burger King where Darren was
- 4:40working to serve an arrest warrant. None of the
- 4:43DEA agents who were there were wearing body cams,
- 4:46and the cameras in the facility itself did not
- 4:48capture the actual shooting. And yet the DEA
- 4:50has already said that no charges will be coming
- 4:52to these people, while also acknowledging that
- 4:54this is a lot of killing. He said that the use
- 4:56of force was justified. We have literally no
- 4:59proof of that, except for the account of the
- 5:01DEA agent who did the killing. Non -law enforcement
- 5:05eyewitness accounts say that he was behind the
- 5:07counter being like, what are you going to do?
- 5:08Shoot me? You're going to shoot me? And then
- 5:11he was shot. So in response to this occupation,
- 5:13local businesses in Memphis have been trying
- 5:15to figure out a way to push back because this
- 5:17kind of situation has a chilling effect on businesses
- 5:20on top of the whole human right violations. We
- 5:23saw the same thing in Minnesota. If people are
- 5:24afraid to go out of their house, they're not
- 5:27going to go to businesses and spend money. And
- 5:29if people are afraid to even go to work, you
- 5:32can't really have businesses. And so eventually
- 5:35a pizza shop in Memphis refused service to a
- 5:37member of the National Guard, sparking what would
- 5:39ultimately become a big coalition of businesses
- 5:42doing the same. This, of course, was also creating
- 5:45a bunch of online right -wing backlash against
- 5:48the business owners, which is rich as hell. Like,
- 5:51it's important to not get tripped up on, like,
- 5:54conservatives in the U .S. being hypocrites,
- 5:56right? But here is a business owner making a
- 5:58decision about his business based on his own
- 6:00values, and then a bunch of people are like,
- 6:02you shouldn't be able to do that. Ignore gay
- 6:05cakes! Like, it's not about that, right? It's
- 6:07only about punishing the liberals. That is literally
- 6:10the only thing that they care about. That explains
- 6:13every bit of reaction and policy coming out of
- 6:17the entire conservative movement right now. Anyway,
- 6:19what was I saying? Ah, despite a bunch of online
- 6:22right -wing harassment, it turns out online right
- 6:24-wing harassment is not the same as actual normal
- 6:27people living in a place. And the actual normal
- 6:30people living in a place were like, hey, yeah,
- 6:32These federal agents that we didn't want here
- 6:34in the first place are stomping all over us.
- 6:37We are happy that these businesses are banding
- 6:39together and we're going to support you." That
- 6:41pizza shop reported a spike in revenue as did
- 6:43a whole bunch of other businesses that joined
- 6:45in. This economic chilling effect can be seen
- 6:47in more than just cities where these kind of
- 6:50task forces are being sent into. A joint statement
- 6:53from a coalition of cattle rancher associations
- 6:55basically said, hey, Trump, fucking stop. we're
- 7:00not going to be able to keep doing cattle ranching
- 7:03at this rate. Citing that even the quote unquote,
- 7:06documented immigrants are afraid to go to work.
- 7:10And that's because it's not about if they're
- 7:12documented or not. It's about getting rid of
- 7:13brown people. It was never about actually going
- 7:16after criminals. Again, we know this. Punish
- 7:18the people that they don't like. That's the point.
- 7:21Unfortunately, the people that they don't like
- 7:22do the things that enable them to have the life
- 7:24that they have. So whoops. Anyway, perhaps this
- 7:27is just a guess, but perhaps. when a group of
- 7:31people live in a given place and don't vote for
- 7:33a guy, they're not going to be happy when the
- 7:35guy that they didn't vote for uses federal agencies
- 7:39to harass them. Weird that. Hey, thank you so
- 7:43much for being here. It really means a lot that
- 7:45folks are liking what I'm doing, and I put a
- 7:47lot of effort into making this for you. So thanks
- 7:49for being here. If you like what I do, I've got
- 7:52a Patreon. You can support me there. Otherwise,
- 7:54just like sharing my content, subscribing, all
- 7:56that stuff. It's genuinely helpful. Thank you.
- 7:59Anyway. Speaking of ranchers. John Deere. They're
- 8:04like the HP of farming equipment. Hear me out.
- 8:07I've got an explanation. You know HP printers
- 8:09and how they suck and how you have to like get
- 8:11an ink subscription or they'll like lock you
- 8:14out of printing with like third party black market
- 8:17ink canisters or something? John Deere is really
- 8:20taking that business model to heart. John Deere
- 8:22is virtually synonymous with farm equipment.
- 8:26Big rig farm equipment. That's what they do.
- 8:29That's what they specialize in. If you're running
- 8:30a large -scale farming operation, you probably
- 8:32have a lot of John Deere equipment, and over
- 8:34the years, the company has been putting in a
- 8:36lot of work to make it so that you can't repair
- 8:39your own stuff. Two different complaints filed
- 8:41against John Deere, one coming from farmers and
- 8:43one coming from the FTC, both got at parts of
- 8:46this issue. The farmers were basically saying,
- 8:48hey, yo, John Deere is making it so that we have
- 8:51to go to specifically them to get any kind of
- 8:54repairs because they are holding away their diagnostic
- 8:57software behind a lockbox. So, like, you can't
- 9:00go to a mechanic that would otherwise be able
- 9:02to do the thing. You have to specifically go
- 9:04to John Deere. Simultaneously, the FTC was like,
- 9:07John Deere is holding a monopoly on repair systems
- 9:10and is not letting anybody else get a hold of
- 9:12the actual tools and kits needed to do the repairs.
- 9:16All of this makes for a very profitable scheme
- 9:18for John Deere. Sell equipment that is absolutely
- 9:21necessary for one of the core business models
- 9:23in the entire country, and then also require
- 9:26that they only ever come to them for service.
- 9:28Free market capitalism. But there's been movement.
- 9:32At time of recording, Deere has agreed to settlements
- 9:34on these cases, and they're gonna have to pay
- 9:36out like 99 million dollars in damages, they're
- 9:38gonna cover legal fees, but more importantly,
- 9:41they're going to have to open up their repair
- 9:43systems. It's a right -to -repair argument. Do
- 9:46consumers have the right to make repairs to the
- 9:49things that they purchased after having purchased
- 9:51it? Typically that's what purchase means. So
- 9:54according to the settlement, moving forward,
- 9:55John Deere is going to have to make sure that...
- 9:57third parties can get a hold of the equipment
- 9:59that's actually necessary to do diagnostics and
- 10:02repairs. They are also required to encourage
- 10:05dealerships to promote the sale of such things.
- 10:10That part's a little iffy. At the end of the
- 10:13day, it's a settlement. John Deere has not admitted
- 10:16fault, and that the details may change, and also
- 10:19it's definitely not as impactful as it could
- 10:21have otherwise been. But it's at least something.
- 10:24I think people are pretty tired of an entire
- 10:26economic culture of strip mining your customers'
- 10:29wallets. So hopefully we see more of this in
- 10:32the future. It's a birthday. It's a big birthday.
- 10:35For a big boy. Kind of. And it's not a boy. Today
- 10:41marks the kind of birthday for Yosemite National
- 10:43Park, a place that is as beautiful as it is troubled
- 10:46in its history. I say it's the kind of birthday
- 10:48because the park was established in, like, multiple
- 10:51chunks of legislation. and it went back and forth
- 10:54a little bit, and there's a lot of stuff that
- 10:57happened. So here is the history of Yosemite
- 10:59National Park. Yosemite. It's big, there's a
- 11:02valley, some other places, and for a while there
- 11:06were native people living there. By 1851, the
- 11:09Gold Rush was in full swing, and there were gold
- 11:12in them hills. A state -sponsored militia was
- 11:15sent into what is now Yosemite National Park
- 11:17to eradicate the native people living there,
- 11:20expunge them to a reservation. Despite two raids,
- 11:23they failed to actually accomplish their goal,
- 11:25but they did leave a lot of carnage in their
- 11:27wake. Some of the native people living there
- 11:29stayed for quite a while, and they would do things
- 11:31like make baskets to sell to tourists and stuff
- 11:32like that. 1864 is the first time that there
- 11:36was some semblance of national parkery going
- 11:39on. There weren't really national parks yet,
- 11:41but they earmarked a chunk of land around Yosemite
- 11:42for public use. Then in 1890, October 1st, they
- 11:46did more of that. They passed another piece of
- 11:49legislation that... lumped up other bits of land
- 11:52around Yosemite into national public usage. So
- 11:56at this point we've got like Yosemite and Yosemite
- 11:59DLC, kind of. In 1906 they combined them. But
- 12:09before that, 1903, President Teddy Roosevelt
- 12:12spends a few nights camping in Yosemite, and
- 12:14he's like, this place pretty good. This place
- 12:16pretty good. Let's make it bigger. So he goes
- 12:19back and he's like, hey, we're going to make
- 12:20it bigger. And they decide to lump in more, more
- 12:23parts of the area around Yosemite into Yosemite.
- 12:26Now we've got a nice big old mass. To be clear,
- 12:29I want to just pause real quick. These American
- 12:32politicians were not moving land. They were just
- 12:35designating land. OK, cool. Making sure. 1913
- 12:38Woodrow Wilson signs a bill into law that says
- 12:40that San Francisco can dam up a river in Yosemite
- 12:44to get municipal water. Despite a bunch of conservationists
- 12:48being like, hey, this is a bad idea, but they
- 12:50did that anyway. 1914, the U .S. Army, who had
- 12:53been up until now, stewarding the land, passes
- 12:56this over to a civilian organization that will
- 12:59eventually become National Park Service. 1970,
- 13:02mounted park rangers attack a bunch of parkgoers,
- 13:05hitting them with tear gas because they were
- 13:07annoying. For real, basically a bunch of hippies
- 13:09were hanging out in Yosemite, and that pissed
- 13:11off a lot of people for some reason, and national
- 13:13park rangers went after them. When the park goers
- 13:16defended themselves by throwing like rocks and
- 13:18bottles and stuff, they were hit with tear gas.
- 13:20It was a mess. Where have I heard that before?
- 13:23We've got gold rushing, we've got genociding,
- 13:26we've got Teddy Roosevelting, we've got going
- 13:28after peaceful citizens for being peaceful. It's
- 13:32really just a microcosm of America. Side note,
- 13:35there is a recurring event in Yosemite up until
- 13:37like the late 60s called the Yosemite Firefall
- 13:40where workers would push a bunch of burning embers
- 13:44off the side of a cliff in Yosemite to make it
- 13:47look like a waterfall of fire. They don't do
- 13:50that anymore. Because obviously, it has since
- 13:54been replaced with, um, hey, there's this waterfall
- 13:56over here that glows in the setting sun. We'll
- 13:59call that the fire fall. So happy birthday, Yosemite.
- 14:03Sorry that we dumped a bunch of burning embers
- 14:06on you. Lightning Round. The Witcher 3 has a
- 14:09remaster out if you own the game. It's a free
- 14:11upgrade. Thanks. There was this, like, big ring
- 14:14of concrete in England and they had no idea what
- 14:17it was for for years and we recently found out
- 14:20that it was for, like, nuclear monitoring stuff
- 14:22during the Cold War. The Trump administration
- 14:24has motioned to pull back about $800 million
- 14:26worth of funding that Congress has already appropriated
- 14:30because that money might be used to help asylum
- 14:32seekers. Republican Senator Susan Collins, who
- 14:35heads up the Senate Appropriations Committee,
- 14:37has concerns. Starbucks has announced that they
- 14:40are going back on their climate initiatives.
- 14:42So if you weren't already boycotting, you might
- 14:44want to get on that. Due to the arbitrary trade
- 14:46war that the US finds itself in with Canada,
- 14:49there's now a bunch of bans on more Canadian
- 14:51products, including like motorcycles, booze,
- 14:54and dairy products. A database of US military
- 14:57service members was hacked, leaking information,
- 14:59including unredacted social security numbers
- 15:01for people in the military. And finally for today,
- 15:04Six Flags in Valencia, California has shut down
- 15:06their X2 roller coaster after multiple people
- 15:10suffered a brain hemorrhage after riding it.
- 15:12X2 looks too intense for me. Thank you so much
- 15:15for listening to today's episode of Stuff Keeps
- 15:16Happening. Head to skh .news for sources, bonus
- 15:19content, and a secret underground pass to get
- 15:22into my perfect replica of the X2 roller coaster.
- 15:26My name is Endeavourance. We'll talk again soon.
- 15:28Take care and be well.
