- 0:46And welcome back to The Foundry Corner podcast.
- 0:50I'm Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian Sigler, buddy.
- 0:54How you doing tonight? It's a Tuesday night, man.
- 0:57We are coming off a dub. I'm tired.
- 1:00I haven't shaved this week. You do numerous things going her
- 1:04from the house here. But doing good, man.
- 1:08How about yourself? Man, it's been a few days of
- 1:13recovery but I'm getting back in the swing of things.
- 1:18Now we got a good Tuesday under the belt.
- 1:21Monday was a little rough, but what can we do?
- 1:24What can you do? Well obviously, before we get
- 1:27into the recap mr. Siegel, let's go ahead and he'll
- 1:31hear cigs Adventure in the bird on Saturday.
- 1:37Yeah, I ended up taking my son with me to the game.
- 1:41We had a good trip in hit a little little traffic there just
- 1:48just before, 220 on 81. So that's load us up a little
- 1:53bit. Did a little tailgating took my
- 1:56son up to hook, you Village for a bit.
- 2:00He got got some photos with the cheerleaders, which eventually
- 2:03made the the official. Yo, the, for the postgame vid.
- 2:08So, that was pretty cool, yet. The, the 10-second Mark
- 2:11approximately, it was pretty. Yeah, pretty sickening 10
- 2:14seconds. My kids, they're hanging out
- 2:16with the cheerleaders. Those smells pretty nice.
- 2:18He got got a picture with the Hokie bird.
- 2:20So did a little bit more, tailgating ate some food, hit
- 2:26the game, found my seats. Jump to Sandman.
- 2:31Yes. And then we proceeded to beat
- 2:34BC's ass. For four quarters.
- 2:37Yes, we did. And apparently, the seats you
- 2:39got were like creme, de La Creme, right?
- 2:41Like, middle up, 50-yard line about.
- 2:44Yeah, we're about middle. Middle.
- 2:46Middle middle? Yeah.
- 2:47It's awesome. In East.
- 2:48Yeah. And you're in East, which means
- 2:51you, if you're a middle middle, you were probably about what two
- 2:53sections from the student section, which was pretty
- 2:56electric Saturday night. Yeah.
- 2:59Yeah. Yeah sweet.
- 3:01Good times. It was real good time.
- 3:03It was loud on our side for sure.
- 3:05Awesome always is loud. Only she got to be yeah.
- 3:07Be careful over in West People shush you for no apparent
- 3:10reason. All right, but let's get into
- 3:12it. The game itself or mr.
- 3:14Siegel was at on Saturday night, it's great to be wrong sometime.
- 3:19And see, I love being wrong when it involves a hokie dub.
- 3:24Yes, Hokies win for dub. I'm okay.
- 3:27Being wrong, Hokies win. 9:33. And, you know, let's just start
- 3:34it straight out and let's talk about that the defense man
- 3:38because this defense is kind of reminiscing of Defense as we've
- 3:44seen throughout our lifetime. And I'm going to tell you, it's
- 3:46started quick. Second play of the game Armani
- 3:50Chapman. Absolutely.
- 3:51Set the tone with that interception.
- 3:55Yeah. Out the gate, the Roar and lame
- 3:58was Spectacular. Like, It felt like the old Lane
- 4:05like right out the gate, all of a sudden punch him right in the
- 4:09mouth, get a turnover get in scoring Grange.
- 4:14And then we were able to punch it in quickly.
- 4:16Take the Lead 7. Nothing already.
- 4:20They're kind of out of what they want to do.
- 4:22Absolutely. And that play was great.
- 4:24I mean, I couldn't understand. I don't quite understand the
- 4:27leverage, but he essentially just wrote his guy out of bounds
- 4:30and your Kovac. I don't know why he threw the
- 4:32ball. All, I mean I don't know if it
- 4:34was a 1 read and he thought he was going to come back in or
- 4:37something, but when he threw it it was almost like as soon as
- 4:41you saw the ball in the air, it was like, that's a, if Armani
- 4:45can catch it. That's a pig because he played
- 4:48it perfectly. Yeah, I me through its Jordan
- 4:50inside when our money had already ran his Man Out of
- 4:52Bounds. So, not a good throw.
- 4:55Well, it was a good decision or not, it won't get through.
- 4:58Absolutely. And that's sort of set the whole
- 5:00tone for the defense, the whole night, I I mean five sacks total
- 5:04on defense, the defensive line as a whole shows out.
- 5:09We saw Cole Nelson, get on the board.
- 5:12Sigue McRae. Get on the board with sacks but
- 5:15obviously, Garbutt, flashed more than anyone.
- 5:22He was named the ACC defensive lineman of the week and then
- 5:25that picture. I don't know if you've seen it
- 5:28with him carrying the lunch pail and if you didn't know y'all, go
- 5:31find this picture on. Around the lunch, pail is a dog
- 5:36collar. And, I mean, I don't know whose
- 5:40idea this is. I hope that David Cunningham and
- 5:43he better. Somebody asked that question and
- 5:46tomorrow's our Thursday's press conference because I don't smash
- 5:50because that looks nasty. Yeah, I mean the combination is
- 5:54pretty sweet and I mean, I liked it to the defensive line is kind
- 5:57of getting in on their own kind of tradition here, right?
- 6:01I think that's going to be fun to see.
- 6:03See and see who ends up with that, that dog collar going
- 6:06forward. But Garbutt big game, he was
- 6:10playing, he was all over the field.
- 6:12He did he did well against the run but he did a great job
- 6:15pressuring to Kovac the entire night.
- 6:19Your Kovac was in hell for flawless quarters, pure.
- 6:23Hell for four quarters and what garbage said after the game is
- 6:26he played like a dog that hasn't eaten for three days.
- 6:31And if you mess with a dog that has a need For three days, they
- 6:34will bite you and he bit them all night long.
- 6:36He only get credited with one sack it should have been too
- 6:40because of the one you're Kovac is running away from him and he
- 6:43falls down the statistician. Took it away from him which you
- 6:47wonder like what the hell like The nearest man to that.
- 6:51They made it a rush instead of a sack and but whatever he had
- 6:54three tackles for loss in that game as well.
- 6:57And you know, a total for Thailand garment.
- 7:02So all of his tackles were for loss hit three tackles but it
- 7:06was just the constant pressure all night and already backfield.
- 7:10Oh yeah, McRae had, you know tackles for loss Will for
- 7:14Pinette with a half a sack Pollard with half a sack.
- 7:17We saw Kendrick a couple times. The ball and get up in there
- 7:20quick, the defensive plot line essentially played possessed.
- 7:25Yeah and they were going against, I think they really are
- 7:29Leone smell blood in the water with that offensive line.
- 7:32Yes. And once they saw that, they're
- 7:34like, all right, we're in attack mode.
- 7:36We're in attack mode. They can't, they can't block
- 7:38this in the Rush game. They're not gonna be able to run
- 7:40the ball pin. Your ears back go after gjakova,
- 7:44absolutely, and if that wasn't good enough, Ten total tackles
- 7:49for loss. I mean, so not only the
- 7:52defensive line show up the linebacking.
- 7:55Sure short core showed up, as well with Dax and Jaden, both
- 8:00James Keller and Mc Donald Jr. Walker everybody, that touched
- 8:06the field. Had some sort of impact, play it
- 8:10scene and, you know, Brian, you went back and watch the game
- 8:16again. I felt like the tacking was
- 8:19better Saturday night because we caught more in the backfield
- 8:22when you watched it not only live but then come back.
- 8:25Did that reaffirm that the tackling improved from Week 1 to
- 8:28week? Two best tackling came.
- 8:31I've seen in at least the last three years.
- 8:34Pittsburgh 2019. Correct.
- 8:38Last time you were in laying. Yeah, exactly.
- 8:41And you know, maybe I should go to lay more often, maybe, maybe.
- 8:46Maybe maybe that's that. Maybe that's the Message, I
- 8:48think that's the key but I think in general, we mentioned last
- 8:51week that it had already taken a significant step forward
- 8:55compared to the last two years. We were we are almost there.
- 9:00We left a few in the backfield last week but still last week,
- 9:03they were getting that 223 yards.
- 9:06I don't think Pat, garlow got maybe back to the line, maybe
- 9:12the line of scrimmage because obviously, you know, when you
- 9:15get this isn't incorrect. Folks, for total yards on 26
- 9:21carries. I mean that's pretty insane.
- 9:27Yeah, I mean that says, that's as good as you could expect
- 9:30against any opponent, let alone a power five conference
- 9:33opponent, what the running back who it went over, 1,000 yards
- 9:36and I know they're lying is hurting.
- 9:39But you still see guys who get over 1,000.
- 9:42Usually can put up something but I mean absolutely nothing.
- 9:47I I think he may have actually had it up here.
- 9:52He had 15 total yards. Yep.
- 9:57Hear what 12 carries? 10 carries one carries weight 5
- 10:02per carry so yeah, get it was just flying to the ball in and
- 10:10did the um go off with some of those open field.
- 10:14Tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
- 10:16I mean, you can, you can hear it, especially the one key on to
- 10:20be brought down the running back.
- 10:22You have got a big one there. I think the one word Cray made
- 10:26the play at the flat. Got a pretty big one.
- 10:32Absolutely. So those and the other thing and
- 10:35he only had one tackle but it was a big one.
- 10:37The screen pass where Jaylen strowman again, it was no
- 10:41hesitancy, when jaelen strong and came on that screen.
- 10:45He went straight to the ball. He didn't try to read it.
- 10:48It was just like he's got the ball mount to go tackle him.
- 10:53Yeah, he made some good plays and we're seeing like them mix
- 10:56up things on nickel, right? You saw.
- 10:59Yeah, more strobing. We saw a lot more DJ Harvey this
- 11:02week. Obviously, saw more Breann
- 11:05Murray with some, some coming in there, to spell for Dorian
- 11:08strong. So it was kind of a mix of
- 11:10everything, the secondary. And we got got some additional
- 11:13reps in there. And I think that kept everyone,
- 11:16you know, more fresh for the the later quarters there.
- 11:18When we kind of need it that that extra oomph at the end.
- 11:22We The crazy part is you talk about strowman and you talk
- 11:25about some of the guys that played nickel so Harvey played
- 11:28nickel. Connor played nickel, Lawson
- 11:31played, nickel Jenkins played nickel and actually Jr.
- 11:33Walker started the game at nickel and it's that position
- 11:37flexibility, right? We're okay.
- 11:40We can take you out to here, will bring tamari down, we trust
- 11:43Jalen on the back where you can start mixing things up.
- 11:46And again, like you just mentioned guys, get to stay
- 11:48fresh and that Sam linebacker? Spot stayed fresh all Night and
- 11:53I mean to the to the tune of the BC offense, only four yards,
- 11:57rushing only 155 total yards offense, I mean 3rd and 8 3 of
- 12:0418 on third and fourth Downs. And I mean right now you know
- 12:10you look on ncaa.com Hokies are the best third down conversion
- 12:16percentage defense in the country and 13%.
- 12:21Yep. And when you look at it you know
- 12:24almost a third of their total yardage came on one plate is a
- 12:27flowers. Yeah.
- 12:29And that was the only big catch. He had all night.
- 12:33Yeah. And I mean, it's pretty wild to
- 12:36think about that. But then you start digging into
- 12:38the data and I know we're a couple games in.
- 12:40So it'll be interested in how this goes out.
- 12:42But the Hokies are a top 15 passing efficiency defects.
- 12:46I mean, that's, it's slowly getting there.
- 12:51I think we expected, you know, Brent prior to improve the
- 12:55defense significantly. You're talking about a team, a
- 12:58defense right now. I don't know where one in one in
- 13:00losing at ODU game sucks. But you're talking about a top
- 13:05five, Total Defense. You're talking about a top 15
- 13:08scoring defense. Yep.
- 13:10It's you know and and we're talking about getting people
- 13:15down behind the line of scrimmage with the 10:00 on
- 13:17Saturday night. You know, we've got 24 total,
- 13:22We've got a lot and we're another again, top 20 team
- 13:26tackles for loss and as much as it was holding Day.
- 13:30Flowers, big, I thought, if anything Cactus, once I saw how
- 13:35quick we were getting, I thought Cactus would get some catches
- 13:40Yeah, they really didn't have. I don't know if it's just
- 13:44because they were playing from behind.
- 13:45But, you know, we did a good job of taking him away as well.
- 13:47He wasn't that kind of reliable check down, he wasn't the guy
- 13:52that was kind of helping them move the sticks.
- 13:53They weren't able to get him the ball consistently he had one
- 13:55catch so he not only shut down flowers, but we kept them from
- 14:01being able to go to any Outlets as well.
- 14:04Yeah, absolutely, you have Z flowers, 79 yards and the big
- 14:08one was 50. So he had 2029 on three other
- 14:12caches. So they did the job on him and
- 14:16don't get me wrong the movie put on Dorian was nasty.
- 14:20But we is it was a good double move.
- 14:22It was a great double move but guess what?
- 14:26You know, that's when you kind of sit there and say, all those
- 14:29under throwing balls suck, but in that situation when you're
- 14:32putting that pressure on and he has to come back to it instead
- 14:35of being a 70 yard gain or a touchdown, he had to come back
- 14:39to it by that time Dorian and the Seer people's got down
- 14:43there. Leveraged in tackling.
- 14:46Yeah, PS. He pulls probably had an angle
- 14:48on him but he could have if he had caught that industry.
- 14:50He probably going to be, you could have made a move on
- 14:53people's there, so him having to kind of regroup and collect it.
- 14:58Both of them were able to kind of wrangle him down there, which
- 15:00is good. Absolutely so defense playing
- 15:05Lights Out, it's going to be fun to see this group, as again, as
- 15:09guys start to mature more as guys, get more comfortable in
- 15:12the system, right? They've already, they've already
- 15:15kind of. It doesn't take much right.
- 15:17You go out there and you start hitting the quarterback.
- 15:20Picking balls all force and fumbles by and happens quick tip
- 15:25so and it seems like you know prize definitely calling the
- 15:28defense which you know for more if prize sitting there kind of
- 15:35understand what the game plan is it's getting Marvin getting the
- 15:37chance to work with his linebacker Corps.
- 15:40And again maybe that's the reason we saw such a good step
- 15:43is I'm working with the linebacking corps, I'm focusing
- 15:46on fundamentals, and we're going to, we're going to see the
- 15:49Improvement foot. Yeah, I mean, we've seen, I
- 15:53mean, we thought that the linebacking corps was definitely
- 15:57the most veteran in terms of experience, but we've seen such
- 16:01a ratchet up in play so far, that, I mean, it's hard not to
- 16:06be a little impressed and I know it's early, I never played a
- 16:09team, that is a G5. We play the team that has
- 16:12probably one of the worst offensive lines in the ACC right
- 16:15now, at least. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:18I don't necessarily think that the players on that line Are not
- 16:21talented I think they're just not ready to play the amount of
- 16:26snaps they're playing. Yeah at this point in their
- 16:30careers. Exactly that they got too much
- 16:33youth at too many positions. Yeah.
- 16:36And the big part was the best offensive lineman you know that
- 16:39they had did get called you know basically game day couldn't play
- 16:45and like you said they the the defense smelled the blood in the
- 16:49water but like like you also say is against the quality of
- 16:54competition that the defense is essentially dominated dominated.
- 17:01And that's what you want. If it's a lower team, you want
- 17:04to dominate them again. They gave they've given up two
- 17:08big plays all season, two big plays.
- 17:13If they keep progressing, they keep progressing.
- 17:17It's going to be interesting, especially what goes on roughly
- 17:2210 days from now? That's kind of going to be the
- 17:26two games, right? They're going to be those
- 17:28landmark with have that. This defense is when they face
- 17:30the West Virginia offense and when he faced the UNC offense.
- 17:33So let's let's let's just keep that in mind as we get into next
- 17:36week. All right.
- 17:37Let's let's flip it over to the offensive side of the ball.
- 17:42Out. Not not all World offense under
- 17:45300 total yards 284 total and let's go talk about Grant Wells.
- 17:51You know, you know, people were screaming, we should go ahead
- 17:54and throw in brown, throw in other players, but he comes out
- 17:59and have some self a solid but in unspectacular game, which in
- 18:05this case is what we needed, right?
- 18:08Yeah. They'll be.
- 18:08There was really no need to take a ton of risk as we got that big
- 18:14lead early. He did a good job taking care of
- 18:17the football which is what he didn't do well against though to
- 18:20you you know when we were looking at the stat line I mean
- 18:25obviously zero interceptions stands out with the thing that
- 18:27stood out more than me was looking at the bad balls that
- 18:32were thrown last week compared to you know what they were done
- 18:37with what we saw this week, there were some bad thrown balls
- 18:40but there weren't any bad decisions.
- 18:42Balls. You know, we saw those risky
- 18:46mrs. Become safe, mrs.
- 18:49And that's what I mean. That's what you want.
- 18:51You, I mean, you want some calculated risk from time to
- 18:53time, but you want to make sure that when you're taking those
- 18:56risk, you're taking those risk where it's safe to play, right?
- 19:00I'm like the Caleb Smith, throw ya deep shot, downfield.
- 19:06And let's talk about that pass because that pass is going to be
- 19:10the ACC catch of the week. Week, where he put that ball
- 19:15Brechin will bullshit. Grant Wells has a hell of an
- 19:21accurate. Default where dropped it, right?
- 19:23He dropped it right in the bucket, man, right there in the
- 19:26bad part, is Caleb. Look like literally Caleb's, the
- 19:29face mask is getting pulled amazingly Kayla, maybe catch,
- 19:34which was unbelievable. Yeah, we didn't get a flag on
- 19:37that. I mean, I'm glad it came down as
- 19:39a catch anyway, regardless book, exact, how there wasn't a flag
- 19:42on that is beyond me? But yeah, I mean, that was a
- 19:45hell of the throw and if we can Get a couple more of those at
- 19:49game, then we're cooking. Then we're on to something.
- 19:53Yeah, but you know, when we look at what he's doing, much better
- 19:57game. I'll take an efficient game over
- 20:01a 300 yard game with three or four turnovers, absolutely.
- 20:05And now, because of how this game played out, its we're going
- 20:08to, we got to mention what's his leash because we look at the, we
- 20:13look at his completion percentage, he's right at 61%
- 20:17For what we're probably asking to do.
- 20:20You say that's Valley malware? You should be about where we
- 20:22need it. Yeah, I mean, you'd like to see
- 20:25it right around that 65. So he's hovering in that
- 20:28ballpark obviously, it's fall sample size so far.
- 20:32So, you know, the bad game is disproportionately helping.
- 20:36Yeah, there's numbers right now. When I look at what he does in
- 20:40other aspects though, I think he needs to be more decisive when
- 20:44our run is called. Or when called on the Run.
- 20:47Thinking about when he scrambles being a little more decisive
- 20:51earlier in the drop back when it's the call run being a little
- 20:55bit more decisive with, you know, where he's finding the
- 20:59hole, where he wants to go and not not thinking as much when it
- 21:04comes to those, those scrambles and those design runs, I feel
- 21:08like that's holding him back a little bit.
- 21:10He had a couple good runs though for us.
- 21:13You know, he had one on that first drive where, you know,
- 21:17both guys in it up running to the flat.
- 21:18Got out of the pocket. Got about 45 yards.
- 21:22Yeah. And a couple other good runs one
- 21:26for a first down on a third and long.
- 21:29So he had he had some good runs. I'd like to see a little more
- 21:33decisiveness there. And I mean, I think the big
- 21:37thing is, is that if he can continue to show that, he's not
- 21:40going to hurt the offense, keep rolling with him until Yeah
- 21:50absolutely. The other thing you can look at
- 21:54just the data point is he's averaging a little over four
- 21:57yards or run and I think for who he is that's where we need him
- 22:04at. He's got he's averaging about 35
- 22:06a game. I would like to see him a lot
- 22:09more decisive like one of the plays there was a player coming,
- 22:13he's going to the sideline. And this is a third-down play my
- 22:20buddy, few kids me up and said, why didn't he just turn into
- 22:23that versus going out? And I couldn't explain because
- 22:26he was close enough if he turned it in and then about two series
- 22:29later is when he ran that draw and goes into like to BC
- 22:33Defender. He literally, I think he knock
- 22:35somebody out of the game with it but you are You know.
- 22:42It was. What am I looking for here?
- 22:47It was like trying to prove a point to when he went out on the
- 22:49sideline last time that he essentially he was trying to
- 22:53back himself up and say I'm not afraid to make contact with you.
- 23:00Yeah I mean I like that that aspect.
- 23:02I like the we're being more assertive.
- 23:06So you know we'll see if how we proceed with the quarterback
- 23:10situation especially with you know what we have coming up this
- 23:15week we're going to talk about a little bit.
- 23:17Absolutely. It's gonna be really interesting
- 23:19to see how we handle Wofford game.
- 23:21Let's talk about a little bit more on the offensive side of
- 23:23the ball to pass catching Prime. If I told you we won by 17
- 23:28points but Gallo had one catch it, and it did not come until in
- 23:33the second half. Would you believe me?
- 23:35Last Tuesday, not not at all. I would, I would not have
- 23:40believed you, especially after what we saw with ODU and how
- 23:46heavily targeted he was in that game.
- 23:51But we had some other guys step up, right?
- 23:52We had Caleb in particular was one big catch down.
- 23:57The field, had the touchdown Khan.
- 23:59Plumber Academy had a bunch of good plays Gosnell, had a couple
- 24:04good stick moving routes. So you know, we saw some signs
- 24:09of life from the wide receiver room, a little bit more this
- 24:13week, but we also have, you know, a couple guys, take a
- 24:17little step back, right, Lofton, two catches for -1 and what I
- 24:26hated, oh, God, I hated it Shay. Shades of that pot pass into the
- 24:31boundary was just the to me. I hate those places because I
- 24:36think it was like woman second and five and it was just like no
- 24:42not this is, you know second and one.
- 24:46Yeah sure. Second and five, it put us now
- 24:50behind the change third and seven.
- 24:52I just hate going any kind of sweep into the boundary.
- 24:55I just I get that but if you looked at the play, if King gets
- 24:59Block. He probably at least gets 223
- 25:02yards if not the first down, okay?
- 25:05Okay. You know, you kind of got to
- 25:07take the bells good sometimes you got to execute and that's
- 25:10what if you execute you at least get a positive play, okay?
- 25:13Whether whether that's still a good play in, your mind is kind
- 25:16of up to you. But you know, there are often
- 25:21times where a Jet Sweep was a good play but you fucking hated
- 25:24to see it. Well, you hated to see it when
- 25:26it was like at the most to me, it's always.
- 25:29He's down in distance for those plates because if they aren't
- 25:32blocked correctly, you said it before it those plays aren't
- 25:35block directly, you can lose a lot of yours.
- 25:38You can put yourself in a good position to a bad position again
- 25:42second and one you lose. Three hits third and four.
- 25:44We can live another day so it's really interesting, but you
- 25:46mentioned it earlier. Caleb obviously is the best
- 25:50receiver on the team and him going down again.
- 25:53So, do you definitely heard the game planned, but seen blumrich
- 25:56and Gosnell. Bloomberg had five catches For
- 26:0046 yards, hit a couple Wildcat things actually, I think he
- 26:05because of one of them was blown up, completely accidental with -
- 26:09yards there, but it shows you need to be on the field
- 26:12personnel with the stick movers. But now it's like, okay, we saw
- 26:17gallo and Drake via successful combo.
- 26:19Game one actually a trio of Gallo, Drake, Dwayne right along
- 26:24with Caleb. The second game we see blumrich
- 26:28and we see Gosnell kind of Step In so it's kind of feeling like
- 26:35that moves. Getting a little bit better.
- 26:37Overall. Yeah bro.
- 26:39We do your we do. We're going to need Caleb to be
- 26:40a consistent contributes, captain Kayla.
- 26:43You gotta get that you can get to the point where we can mix
- 26:46and match behind him. That's only the better for us
- 26:49because it means they can't just key on Gallo.
- 26:52They can't just keiondre. They can't just key on Lofton or
- 26:55blow over the whole field. Yeah.
- 26:57Cover the whole field. You get four or five guys that
- 26:59can do. Thing.
- 27:01Then that at least gives you an opportunity to really use the
- 27:04whole field of your advantage because they're not just going
- 27:07to be able to key on, you know, one or two.
- 27:09Guys, let me ask this prod. You mentioned to me that we had
- 27:15our most success with our intermediate stuff, that roughly
- 27:17five to 15 range. Why was that?
- 27:20What were they doing? That sort of made that
- 27:24intermediate range where Grant, you know, he was 64 percent.
- 27:28He was essentially I think the data was 14:16 of 25y.
- 27:33What were they doing that? Forced us to play that
- 27:36intermediate route versus running screens and obviously we
- 27:39took the one shot, but I think that was more of where the game
- 27:41was. Its kind of kind of three fold
- 27:45here. So number one we had a step up
- 27:48in competition. They were a little tighter on
- 27:50our routes in those those quick hitters, they were keen on that.
- 27:54They watch the ODU tape so we weren't getting a ton of
- 27:58separation. But to when we saw that, I liked
- 28:04it Bowen, kind of he's realized that we don't necessarily have
- 28:10guys that can consistently get separation just on their own.
- 28:15He's using the scheme to get Guys open.
- 28:18And that's where a lot of those intermediate routes are really
- 28:22heavy in terms of the scheme. So that's why you're seeing
- 28:27success there. Got it.
- 28:30All right, that makes sense. I'll be really interesting what
- 28:33we do this week against Wofford, and then obviously the West
- 28:36Virginia game coming up. Let's talk about a couple more
- 28:38things. Wrap up sort of close, the book
- 28:42Run game, 144 yards. Total the biggest ahead.
- 28:48I don't know why 200, I wanted 200 but not bad what.
- 28:52We'll take it, obviously. With some of the stuff you were
- 28:55going to talk about a minute with the offensive line.
- 28:57I think, maybe we could have gotten 200.
- 28:59But let's talk about the one, big one.
- 29:03When you saw that, he Shaun King run and you saw a develop
- 29:07because where it was, that was right at 30.
- 29:09So you had that perfect view from the West stands down, onto
- 29:14it right here. So, I'm sure you saw everybody
- 29:16moving, but when you saw that and in full and him, just go had
- 29:20to make you feel. It was glorious.
- 29:25That was the best block play. They had in the entire night,
- 29:30exactly. How you draw it up.
- 29:33What? I like we saw Clements kind of
- 29:37get out there, get the kick on the outside backer we saw JJ rap
- 29:41get a good block on the on the inside linebacker.
- 29:44But what impressed me most was was Jane blue on this play
- 29:49because he had a read where he was kind of trying to get an
- 29:52angle on the corner to get a block.
- 29:55He saw the corner ran himself out of the play.
- 29:57It immediately went up, feel got to the safety, got a block King,
- 30:01set it up for Him got to the edge touchdown Hokies.
- 30:07Yeah, they weren't going to catch Keshawn King once he got
- 30:09in that open field and it was and I'm sure that place was
- 30:12rocking because it's, you know, long touchdown runs have been
- 30:15few and far between especially last year.
- 30:18So, you know. No, unfortunately, he Shaun King
- 30:21got bang. I think everybody's saying,
- 30:23like, if they would have needed him in the second half, he could
- 30:26have came in. This is one of those management
- 30:28issues like if we need you were going to put you in stay on the
- 30:31bike. Stay loose.
- 30:32Um and after he goes out, you know, Dylan Holston, got most of
- 30:37the run after that, you know, he ended it with 25 carries.
- 30:42I mean we were running the ball a lot, but I did not realize
- 30:45Jalen got 25 carries only for 60 yards.
- 30:49We're hearing more and more about Malachi Thomas that he's
- 30:54close. He's close to the fastest
- 30:56dealer. He was practicing last week.
- 30:58He wasn't doing contact but he was practicing But he's needed
- 31:03back. And again we said it a couple
- 31:06times and we're not trying to drag but Malachi Thomas and
- 31:10Keyshawn, King give you that one-two punch of dynamic Runners
- 31:14Thomas coming back to it also gives you that opportunity to
- 31:18put him in King on the field the same time and give you even more
- 31:22looks. Yeah, because we started talking
- 31:25get split out a couple times. Like I said on the the Miss
- 31:28block but you know, we ignore that but King has the ability.
- 31:32They're on the edge where as you can Malachi probably is more of
- 31:37a back, feel specific type running back.
- 31:40So if you can get both of those guys on the field at the same
- 31:44time, you know, from time to time, I think that's going to be
- 31:46a good thing. And we saw what, you know, what
- 31:49we wanted to see this week from the from the running game
- 31:51overall, we had a big play, you know, we got some consistent
- 31:56yards, they weren't we weren't getting chunks, but we were, we
- 32:01were getting some things here. Here and there.
- 32:03The problem was, we had a little bit of trouble on first down
- 32:06where we got a little predictable.
- 32:08I think in the calls on first down and we weren't overwhelming
- 32:12them in the middle of that that defense like I thought we could
- 32:18to get to still get some positive yards even if they are
- 32:21key in on it. All right, by the way, don't
- 32:24take this back hole. So had 20 carries 20 carries for
- 32:2848 yards, I was had the wrong data point up there.
- 32:31Alright, let's talk Got it obviously, the oath offensive
- 32:34line, did some good stuff this week, which your grades overall
- 32:39and then run game passing. We're going with see this week
- 32:43overall. Okay, I like the the Run game is
- 32:48a borderline C+ for me, but I think those first down calls
- 32:54that I'm talking about there, or what kind of held them back from
- 32:57kind of taking a c plus B, minus range overall, you can't on
- 33:02First down, get your shit pressed in consistently like
- 33:06that even if they know it's coming at some point you got to
- 33:09have some pride and start getting some positive yards.
- 33:11Were consistently on that down. So that's a knock, but pass Pro.
- 33:17It was better at times and I was and I'll say I'll qualify it
- 33:23this way when they were sending for.
- 33:26Or they were just blitzing one. We did a good job when we when
- 33:31we saw it when we Had it was pretty clear Who had who
- 33:35pre-snap? We did a good job, much better
- 33:39than last week. Alright, good deal.
- 33:41Good deal when they were bringing five or more we
- 33:46struggled and I know and I know we're going to talk about that a
- 33:52little bit later. So teaser bronze, got a few
- 33:55things that he feels on why we're struggling with that.
- 33:58Is anybody in the doghouse asleep?
- 34:01The whole line because of the reason that we're talking about
- 34:03now, Are we cause if that doesn't improve when we get to
- 34:07other teams, that consistently, bring that type of type of
- 34:11pressure, we're going to have some problems, got it.
- 34:14So we will hit that in just a little while here.
- 34:16Let's split, let's, let's let's wrap this up.
- 34:18Special teams, obviously a much better day.
- 34:21Clean synapse. Will Ross is now 343 for the
- 34:25year, including the 49-yard that would have been good like from
- 34:2958 and something. If y'all haven't noticed, and
- 34:33I'm not getting what Yeah, when he kicks the ball, they're down
- 34:38Main Street. Yep, every time Every time he
- 34:44kicks a field goal, he is putting it right down the
- 34:47middle. You never gonna live that down
- 34:53ever. Don't call me out, I'm good for
- 34:56it. Yeah, you have you were in the
- 34:57bird Peter more boom, some boom. Absolutely boomed.
- 35:04One got a good bouncer seeming like he Fades at the end.
- 35:07I don't know if that's technique or just you know, just the are
- 35:10of the game. So it'll be interesting to see
- 35:12that. But I think the one piece We'll
- 35:13talk about really talk about what you about the difference in
- 35:16coaching philosophies. DJ Harvey made an error.
- 35:22His first one of the year in special teams, essentially we
- 35:27were up and he tried to make a play.
- 35:31Yep. Good evening.
- 35:32Robbie hambone. Something in Wilkesboro, he's
- 35:35got connected. He must be at the field house
- 35:36tonight. He's got to be, he makes the air
- 35:41because he was trying to make a play.
- 35:44But he did lose his job. He didn't get benched and he
- 35:48shouldn't have You mean you got a young guy and you instead of
- 35:52putting the doghouse, you coach him up and you get him back out
- 35:55there to do it again and he did it right.
- 35:57That's a novel fucking thought right there, right?
- 36:02And the next time, that was a font.
- 36:03He went up, he got it. There was some people coming
- 36:06down. Maybe you could have made a
- 36:07play, maybe he didn't but right. Yeah, but you live, you learn.
- 36:14I mean it's one of those things if you're out there making
- 36:17consistent errors and not trying to Correct it.
- 36:20Yes. Put that person in the doghouse
- 36:22if they make one mistake because they're out there trying to make
- 36:25a play. No.
- 36:28Can't do that coach him up and get him out there and do it
- 36:31again. So it was, it was glorious to
- 36:36see him. Go back out there, but special
- 36:37teams, cleaned it up. And obviously, penalties,
- 36:41cleaned up 25 penalties. And are we perfect?
- 36:45Brian know, we're not perfect at all, but let me ask this.
- 36:49In your view, did we see the coaches?
- 36:52And the players clean things up in one?
- 36:54Should say this. The amount that we saw cleaned
- 36:57up, get it shocking. We cleaned up more than I
- 37:02thought we would week-to-week. I mean I know we talked about it
- 37:05when we were on here you know I said BC made a lot of mistakes
- 37:10week one we made a ton of mistakes.
- 37:12We were deaf we definitely had the further ground to cover in
- 37:17terms of getting to a clean slate and we definitely covered
- 37:21a lot more than they did and made up that ground and then
- 37:24some, you know, again we're not perfect.
- 37:27There's still a bunch of things to clean up.
- 37:30We got tight ends that are still missing blocks.
- 37:32We've got, we got wide receivers that are still missing blocks.
- 37:36We got wide receivers that are still not able to get open
- 37:39without some scheme help you know, we got things here and
- 37:45there on special teams that we need to clean up.
- 37:47There's there's stuff all over the field that we need to clean
- 37:49up but the progress from Week, 1 to week 2, what was really
- 37:54impressive? So if we can keep making those
- 37:57strides in, this isn't kind of one of those Those, you know,
- 38:00two steps forward, one step back, type deals.
- 38:03Then I think we're working with something abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 38:07So again, let's let's close the book BC.
- 38:12We take the wind Hokies are now 1 and 1 1 and 0 and ACC play.
- 38:17As I joke with Brian. Before we got on here, we
- 38:19control our destiny to make it to shout it.
- 38:23Shout out to true it with the eleven and one in the bayou.
- 38:26So they are Brian. Let's um, let's go.
- 38:32Hokies news. Notes other college football
- 38:34notes. I don't know if you got in the
- 38:37stadium early enough. But the line of recruits that
- 38:44picture I cannot remember who put it out there and if anybody
- 38:47knows please comment so we can give them proper.
- 38:50Shout out whoever get that picture of the recruits lined
- 38:53up, literally from the 50-yard line.
- 38:54All the way back to the tunnel. Yep.
- 38:56We knew there was a lot. We you there are a lot of
- 38:58recruits on campus. I'm sure you being you around
- 39:02and show you around a lot ones and two, which is near merryman.
- 39:06Not far from Miriam, and I'm sure you saw some that's
- 39:09impressive. I don't care who you are.
- 39:12Yeah, we got 60 yards worth of recruits on campus for one game,
- 39:17and then you show out like that, not only was laying great
- 39:22laying, you know, laying his Lane is usually great on a night
- 39:25game. That's kind of a given it was as
- 39:28advertised. Yes, it was Saturday night and
- 39:31then you go out there and you put a performance like that
- 39:34especially defensive for performance where that's what
- 39:37you've hung your hat on historically, as well.
- 39:40That's Big, that's big for the program.
- 39:42It's only going to help you in terms of moving forward with the
- 39:46recruiting, not just for this cycle, but for 2024 and 2025 in
- 39:50particular because a lot of those kids were on campus to.
- 39:53Yeah. And again, it's the piece that
- 39:54you talked about, it's having them, there's great you got on
- 39:57there, the, the atmosphere, but then the stadium was full, the
- 40:00opening shots of the stadium. There was not a there was not a
- 40:04gap. I think the only little Gap you
- 40:05could see was up at the Boston College section, but sometimes
- 40:09they aren't given back in time where you can LM because
- 40:11technically it was a sellout because what is it, the
- 40:16allotment. If the allotment tickets are
- 40:17sold, you can still considered a sell out but that's all
- 40:20south-south had people in still in the fourth quarter, which is
- 40:23just impressive. So, it's love, seeing that.
- 40:27All right. Now when you got your obviously
- 40:31all over, tailgate scene of these three upsets, which one
- 40:36made you smile the most abstract and them Marshal over Notre
- 40:40Dame. Or Georgia Southern over
- 40:42Nebraska. All right, laugh or smile.
- 40:48What made you laugh? The one that made me laugh.
- 40:51Is the Braska losing to Georgia Southern?
- 40:54She was like, all right, so he's gone for three weeks.
- 41:01Yeah, we can't wait three weeks to save half the money.
- 41:04We're going to go ahead and get rid of him.
- 41:05Now, the one that made me smile, the one that made me smile was
- 41:11was App State over, am Just but, I mean, and that, let's not,
- 41:18let's not, you know, I've got a little soft spot in my heart for
- 41:21appstate anyway, so just absolutely cool campus.
- 41:27We used to practice there. Any time we went down to
- 41:29Suwannee to play them. So they were always good to us
- 41:36on those on those road trips. So got a got a soft spot in my
- 41:40heart for App State, and then you got am, which is, you know,
- 41:44I've said it on here before I say it all the time, there the
- 41:47UNC of the SEC. Yes, they are Got Talent all
- 41:51over the field and they end up shit the bed, four to five times
- 41:55a year. And they did it again and this
- 42:00it could be a case of just not starting the right quarterback.
- 42:02You got Max Johnson said in there.
- 42:05Yeah well they started changing yeah and the I don't know if I
- 42:09don't know if a quarterback change is going to be good
- 42:11enough for them but Then to get the laws, and then you get the
- 42:18yells faltered, hit the timeline that was through the timeline as
- 42:21early as Saturday. And it's just, it's kept going
- 42:24and kept going. So, yeah, that would made me
- 42:26smile. But then later, it made me
- 42:28laugh. It made you laugh.
- 42:30Yeah, that one just made me do a little bit of everything because
- 42:33the amount of money they spent on an IO, the amount of
- 42:37five-star recruit. They essentially bought the
- 42:39amount of money, they paid app state to come there and lay that
- 42:42whooping on them, 1.75 million. The almost 100 million.
- 42:47They paid Jimbo because no, it was 100 million because they
- 42:50bought out, as far as state contract and they're getting
- 42:53nothing in return and it just makes you understand that.
- 42:58Even in the highest level of football, there can be the team
- 43:01with a lot of talent that can't do shit with it and it kind of
- 43:05makes you happy. I mean, if you wanted to win
- 43:07eight or nine games and get maybe one big victory, a year,
- 43:10you should have just kept someone, yes, they could have
- 43:13done that but me the exact same. Records.
- 43:16Same time through. All right, real quick, before we
- 43:19head off to break here, the ACC hoop schedule was released
- 43:25obviously a lot of good games, both Carolina and Duke at home.
- 43:30Only do you go on the road, they quarter screwed the Hokies out
- 43:33the gate though with UNC game, because if you look on your
- 43:38calendar, Bryan, pull up that calendar on your computer and go
- 43:41down to December December. 4th is a Sunday in My anticipation
- 43:46is if it's Sunday, they're probably going to put it on
- 43:48between six and seven as to not interfere with football, or try
- 43:53to catch the back half of football.
- 43:56So, that sucks. But, you know, I like the flow
- 44:02of the schedule because you get UNC out the gate, then BC and
- 44:06wake in Clemson then state. So it's not like there's a
- 44:10murderer's row section in my opinion, anywhere in the
- 44:17schedule where it's like you can play Carolina, do state
- 44:21Louisville, Florida State back to back to back.
- 44:25Yeah, there's like a one tough stretch where they open and
- 44:28close a month with UVA but that's really the That's
- 44:33probably the meat of the schedule.
- 44:35Yep. Yep.
- 44:36But overall, I think it does schedules final be interesting
- 44:40to see how this team plays out again.
- 44:44I just don't want to start like last year.
- 44:47We've got to get over that this year because if we can be solid
- 44:53especially in conference play, I mean we didn't start the season
- 44:56awful. I think overall we had a couple
- 45:00losses that we wanted to have back but as soon as we got in
- 45:03the conference play and just drop so many out, the gate You
- 45:07know, you had to really fight to even secure your spot there and
- 45:13it we probably wouldn't have had if we had to went down to went
- 45:16up to New York and when the whole fucking thing.
- 45:19So exactly, exactly. It's pretty wild.
- 45:24You don't want to put yourself in that situation again.
- 45:26So you gotta think jump jump on that January schedule would be a
- 45:30lot better in January. Then you weren't here last year
- 45:33and be close to as good as you were in February.
- 45:37Because you get that's going to be tough.
- 45:39It's going to be tough. That's gonna be tough because we
- 45:41weren't there. The thing is be better in
- 45:43January, so you don't have to be almost perfect.
- 45:45Well, you don't have to be perfect in February, but you
- 45:48could you need to be close to consume.
- 45:50You need to be as consistent as you want to be there because I
- 45:56think we've got probably a deeper roster top-to-bottom than
- 46:01we had last year. Yep.
- 46:03I think there's more guys that were on the roster last year
- 46:06that are ready to be key. Contributors this year out, the
- 46:08gate. And then you got, you know, guys
- 46:11coming in that have played big roles on other teams, and I
- 46:15think they're ready to kind of slide in.
- 46:17So if you can get acclimated in those early months of the Season
- 46:20before you get into conference play in early December, I think.
- 46:26Going to be me what needs to happen to get the thing rolling
- 46:30abso-freakin'-lutely. Alright Braun.
- 46:32So before we get into some of our main topics tonight, we are
- 46:36going to take a quick pause for a message from our digital
- 46:39partners. As we take a quick break, we
- 46:49like to tell you about getting your free website report from
- 46:52our digital partner, Grassroots, digital marketing Studio.
- 46:55They'll tell you how your website ranks on Google on-site,
- 46:57SEO and social media. No commitment to buy anything,
- 47:00you can get your free report by visiting.
- 47:02Grassroots device is dust. Come on, four, slash four, main
- 47:06topics website. Nice, will do know, the episode.
- 47:10We're gonna do this a little different because we're not only
- 47:12going to do know the Emily. We're going to do a know that
- 47:14sell for a couple games in. We can talk about a few things.
- 47:18With Wofford being an FCS opponent, not a lot of data on
- 47:22there. They are not a good team at all.
- 47:25There Owen to, they haven't scored a point and Brian, I know
- 47:28you did a little reading earlier today and found some interesting
- 47:32stuff out on them. She got out treadmill, horse out
- 47:35there. Who did a little interview with
- 47:39JoJo games longer thinkin's? Yeah, but I'll let you go on
- 47:43that because you were asked him to before, I went to baseball
- 47:45practice. So I'll let you go on that, man.
- 47:48Yeah, so again big shout-out to treadmill horse treadmill
- 47:51horse.com then the interviews up there with Joe James from
- 47:54Wofford fans.com, I guess that's their that's the Big Blog.
- 47:59He's been running it for four years, I think.
- 48:02I think Joe actually lives if I want to if I remember correctly
- 48:05in Northern Virginia now. So he's in the area.
- 48:08But big Wofford fan goes way back and the head coach for a
- 48:17walk. It is.
- 48:20It's coach Conklin and he's on the hot seat and he might not
- 48:23make it through the year and I didn't think we were going to be
- 48:28talking Justin Fuente in this. Preview.
- 48:33But somehow we are because they're kind of looking at an
- 48:37FCS equivalent of the Fuente regime down there at Wofford
- 48:41right now I'm going to read a quote from from the interview
- 48:45that was on there and you know we'll talk about that a little
- 48:48more here in a second. All right.
- 48:50So this is the quote, a big elephant in the room is that
- 48:52basically every fan at Wofford wants, Josh Conklin fired, he
- 48:56tried to leave our program twice before we went downhill.
- 49:00Once as a defensive coordinator position in Tennessee of once as
- 49:03a head coach of South Carolina and we've been awful ever since
- 49:07from our perspective, he came in rode the coattails of a or
- 49:10success. That's the former head coach saw
- 49:13us as a stepping stone to greener pastures failed and is
- 49:17in over his head. It's wild.
- 49:19He hasn't been fired yet in my opinion.
- 49:23So the biggest difference well, I guess the Baylor flirtation
- 49:26you put on there. At least this guy.
- 49:30Either the Baylor flirtation, a years essentially is Bud Foster
- 49:35in this situation where he stays around for a couple of years, he
- 49:39modifies his offense a little bit and then he retires.
- 49:43Yeah, so there there's a lot of parallels here that are just
- 49:48that they were two. Interesting, not to note.
- 49:52And aside from the fact, I think a lot of the fanbase wanted him
- 49:56fired at the end of last year when they went 111.
- 50:00And now they are starting the year owing to when they have not
- 50:04scored a point yet. That is the really, really bad
- 50:09peace because they have not scored a point yet.
- 50:12I mean, and then played two decent teams and UT Chattanooga.
- 50:16New on. Don't get me wrong, Chattanooga,
- 50:19particular challenge. That nigga's ranked Ilan has I
- 50:22think made the tournament for a few years but I mean, I think I
- 50:28read part of that article offered had been to the playoffs
- 50:32numerous times under airs in the past few decades.
- 50:36Like I'm very good very solid football program down there so
- 50:40it's like that. I mean that's the correlation
- 50:42where you take a team that is used to a lot of success, have
- 50:47some success and then try to move to greener pastures Conklin
- 50:52had been the DC down at Pitt. He was a safety coach out of
- 50:54Tennessee and I kind of When I hear well I'm gonna go be the
- 50:58head coach of South Carolina when they fire will muschamp
- 51:01this like Homeslice know you ain't got your gonna go to
- 51:05offer. I'm not trying to be crappy to
- 51:07offered your coaching. Wofford now maybe the defensive
- 51:11coordinator to Tennessee maybe but again you're at Wofford
- 51:15there's a reason you're there. Usually if you're there and you
- 51:18have some success you would bump up potentially to a G5 you
- 51:22didn't. So it's fascinating I'd love to
- 51:29Put up the message right there from Robbie.
- 51:35So this is our coach. Is everybody coach Robbie
- 51:38Compton on? In one of their main supporters
- 51:40is a walker alumni and then don't like the guy.
- 51:43So clearly, it's reciprocated that he is not well, liked a
- 51:48pencil over. This is not just Joe James, you
- 51:51know, breaking out of raging. All right, so the question is,
- 51:56let's talk about this team now. Unless Wonder, can we hang
- 52:01enough points on this team to continually?
- 52:05What are you sleeping in black? I mean, so I don't know if
- 52:10that's the case because I mean they're expecting to get
- 52:13pummeled regardless, I think that's so bad, that's the
- 52:18expectation. When you play a game like this,
- 52:22you kind of expect to get pummeled, but I mean, that
- 52:25offense has been abysmal through two weeks against FC.
- 52:28S competition, right? They've got an inability to
- 52:31really effectively put together drives and to score points.
- 52:37They are still breaking in their new OC.
- 52:40So let's break that down. Let's break that down a little
- 52:43bit. So they are looking to see.
- 52:44I'm looking at the notes here and I'm wondering why are you
- 52:49even trying to do this at the FCS level?
- 52:52So they had it. They had a do see under airs,
- 52:54that was running the triple option, the first year under
- 52:58Conklin they ran the triple option Conklin wanted to move
- 53:02them away from the triple option so they're old coordinators
- 53:05started running. Or of he kind of modified the
- 53:09offense. It was more of a quasi West
- 53:13Coast spread RPO that was kind of getting put into place there
- 53:18and the 21 season when they played in the in the spring it
- 53:22went pretty well. And then he stepped down and
- 53:28then it was a clown show last year and then it's been a clown
- 53:33show so far this year and they got a new.
- 53:35Oh, see this year after. Conklin promoted two of his boys
- 53:42to take over the old osce's role for the start of the 2021 fall
- 53:46season last year. So it's been a, basically, a
- 53:51comedy of errors, but so, yeah. Now they're more of a spread,
- 53:54our po type of attack versus a triple option of the offensive
- 53:58line struggles heavily. As you might expect from an
- 54:00offensive line that not only, you know, is FCS, but was
- 54:05recruited to run a triple option and they consistently shoot
- 54:11themselves in the foot on offense between fumbles,
- 54:14interceptions, missed assignments and things like that
- 54:18so they are just not a good. Offense to watch.
- 54:21Yeah, I mean, luckily Brian got actually to see.
- 54:24He was afraid, he wasn't going to be able to get any tape from
- 54:26this year at. Luckily, the elongation was on
- 54:28ESPN plus over the weekend. So you actually got to see the
- 54:32tape looking through. I was just at diving and I mean,
- 54:37the, the stats are ugly. I mean, it's ugly ugly in when I
- 54:42say, ugly, ugly on offense. Y'all, I mean, to a point where
- 54:47they're averaging basically, they have D6 total yards gained
- 54:55crushing the ball, they have 192 passing, they are averaging, and
- 55:00175 yards of King, you can make an argument that they're running
- 55:06game is their strength right now.
- 55:08Yeah. I mean, the Mike Walker.
- 55:10I mean, but that poor guys only got 80 yards for the year.
- 55:14So actually go back and think about that.
- 55:16One guy is accounted for quarter their offense.
- 55:20Yeah one guy and he's put the ball on the ground three times.
- 55:26So yeah, it's not exactly great here on the offensive side of
- 55:31the ball but defensively and I go there playing FCS, it's not
- 55:36much better. Is it run?
- 55:39It's not great, especially for FCS.
- 55:41I mean, they're giving them about 29 Points a game, you
- 55:44know, we said they're kind of playing that upper mid level FCS
- 55:47competition. Right now they played
- 55:49Chattanooga's. Ranked solid solid team, not
- 55:52upper-tier though. And, you know, elon's kind of
- 55:57the upper end of that middle of the road back there.
- 56:00They run a base 3-4, which is I mean, they've ran ran that for a
- 56:06long time that that even goes back to a or so, that's one
- 56:09thing that Conklin hasn't changed all they are a little
- 56:13more multiple but they are a 34 base.
- 56:19They are better on defense. In an offense like we talked
- 56:21about but they still struggle in the trenches as you would expect
- 56:23from an FCS team. They defend the pass better than
- 56:28the run and they but they can be influence with the play action
- 56:32and misdirection in the past game.
- 56:34So I think that's something that we can take advantage of run a
- 56:37lot, what we saw at ODU. I think we can.
- 56:40We can get them kind of confused with with the flow and come back
- 56:45to the tight end on the other side.
- 56:46Come back to the Digger Cross or something like that, that kind
- 56:52of gets them away from where the, where the flow of the play
- 56:54is going. But, yeah, it's this is a game
- 57:00that we should dominate on both sides of the ball and on special
- 57:04teams. Absolutely.
- 57:07I mean they're just not a good team whatsoever and obviously
- 57:13going through a ton of turmoil I'm sure down a small community
- 57:16like wall for does players are here in it so it's going to be
- 57:21interesting to see the outcome of this game.
- 57:24Now the most the most like cringe thing though.
- 57:27What's the most cream? I guess the coach does like he's
- 57:31like weekly Is his weekly interview?
- 57:36Okay, I can see the guy that's interviewing is trying so hard,
- 57:42not to completely crush. This guy's hopes and dreams and
- 57:46keep it as positive as possible. And it's, it's, it hurts me so
- 57:50much. How it's like, you haven't
- 57:53scored a point. You're giving up almost 30 a
- 57:55game. It's one of the like he's just
- 58:01grass with re. How can I ask this question in
- 58:03the most positive way possible, considering that we're owing to
- 58:07and have not scored a point yet? Not scored a point.
- 58:10Now, we have to go to a power five opponents, home field.
- 58:14Now lucky for them it's an 11 o'clock game.
- 58:17Not even 3:30, so which yeah, those kids are going to get home
- 58:21in time to Rage. That's hilarious.
- 58:26Alright, Braun. So little so there's your little
- 58:28That ground on Wofford. But let's let's flip what this
- 58:34week is really about. We've seen us through two games,
- 58:36we've already talked about some improvement.
- 58:38Let's know that self and Ron as we always mention this as an
- 58:41offensive lineman podcast, let's start there.
- 58:45What is the biggest thing that we have to do this weekend on
- 58:49the Hokies offensive line versus Walker?
- 58:52For both are short and long-term success on the offensive line,
- 58:56we need to get Xavier chaplain and Braylon more some
- 59:01significant snaps against this competition.
- 59:04What about how? And I threw hollifield in there,
- 59:07as well. Okay, but I prefer, we got to
- 59:10get chaplain and more. You say hollyfield because that
- 59:16way if you if your Center does go down, you got someone else
- 59:19that's taking live stamps. Yeah, that's really it.
- 59:24But I think in terms of long-term Chaplain and more,
- 59:29probably more important because I feel like they can help us
- 59:31potentially this year. Whereas hollifield is truly,
- 59:34unless something happens to Johnny is a next year situation.
- 59:38Okay. What about push?
- 59:41You looked at this offensive line or just defensive line of
- 59:45Walford. You said, they're not good in
- 59:47the trenches. Is this the game?
- 59:50Where if you don't see push, you get a little worried.
- 59:55Yeah. If I don't see them
- 59:56re-establish, the line. Scrimmage at the gate then
- 1:00:01that's going to be problematic. For me we got to be better on
- 1:00:05first down runs like I said, sometimes you just got to sack
- 1:00:07up and get some yards even when they're selling out for it.
- 1:00:11And I know they're selling out for right now because we haven't
- 1:00:13been as consistent in the passing game.
- 1:00:14Is you hear me? But when we have been somewhat
- 1:00:19predictable on first down but you still got to be able to get
- 1:00:23two yards. Every time you line up at run
- 1:00:24the ball regardless of whether it's predictable.
- 1:00:28And especially against this opponent, right?
- 1:00:30So doing that, but you mentioned something to me, we didn't hit
- 1:00:36it on the BC because I kind of wanted to hit it here.
- 1:00:38You notice that some of those not ugly runs where we only got
- 1:00:43two or three yards that they were actually block directly.
- 1:00:46Write in this people were missing the lanes.
- 1:00:49I know I I pulled up one, somebody put out there, can't
- 1:00:52remember who I can remember, who I'd let you know, but somebody
- 1:00:55put up one it was a Jalen Holston run.
- 1:00:58Anybody like all terribly block and you look you slow it down
- 1:01:02and literally there's the lane lane is to the right.
- 1:01:05Yes, there's a linebacker in that hole but is it the job
- 1:01:09right there? Is you go to that hole.
- 1:01:11Your job is to try to get by him, run over him.
- 1:01:15But if nothing else, there's five yards, he tackles you on
- 1:01:19spot. You're going to fall forward to
- 1:01:20going to pick up 7 versus getting three or four dip.
- 1:01:24And I'll say this, holsten's biggest strength is How hard he
- 1:01:28runs holsten's, biggest weakness is his visibility.
- 1:01:34He does not have the best visibility in terms of picking
- 1:01:40the right lane. That's something he struggled
- 1:01:43with his entire career here. It hasn't gotten better but he
- 1:01:47runs hard and when he when he picks his Lane, he gets as much
- 1:01:50as he can get wherever it is, even if it's true, right?
- 1:01:52One on that play, he got like four yards and because he just
- 1:01:56barreled ran as hard as he could.
- 1:01:58But when I still that lane, it's like if you make that cut that
- 1:02:02line backers going to have to meet you in the hole, he has to
- 1:02:05tackle you yes to bring you down so it's interesting.
- 1:02:08All right we mentioned this is the teaser from our earlier.
- 1:02:11You mentioned past Pro had gotten significantly better
- 1:02:14against BC. You greatest as up, they went
- 1:02:16from a d and now they're into the sea categories.
- 1:02:20You said they're good with the straight up four man, Rush.
- 1:02:23That's not the issue. but you started talking about even five,
- 1:02:28they can handle, but if they started bringing more pressure,
- 1:02:34That's when the issues came and give me, give me what your
- 1:02:37hypothesis is on this. Yeah, I mean, it comes down to
- 1:02:40communication. It looks like they are not
- 1:02:43whether whether it's Wells, not getting the right checks or
- 1:02:46checking into the the right audibles for check downs.
- 1:02:52But I think it's more this, the communication on the blitz,
- 1:02:55across the board. Because anytime there was like a
- 1:02:58five-man pressure six-man pressure They were struggling if
- 1:03:05they didn't see where the blitz was coming from.
- 1:03:06Have that guy identified in advance of the stamp, there were
- 1:03:11some communication problems about who was going to commit.
- 1:03:13Take who a lot of times you had a guard or a tackle block, no
- 1:03:17one because the communication wasn't there.
- 1:03:20So you got a you got a free rusher, we had several where,
- 1:03:24you know, we had five lineman in a running back in there to
- 1:03:26block, so we had six accounting for six but we had to come free.
- 1:03:31That can't happen. You've got to be able to
- 1:03:33communicate who's taking who understand if there is any sort
- 1:03:38of Twister stunt who's passing to who That's got, that's got to
- 1:03:44be established pre-snap and that communication.
- 1:03:48And that feel is just not there yet.
- 1:03:49And I don't know whether it is not being communicated at the
- 1:03:52line or whether just we haven't repped enough and have the feel
- 1:03:56for those type of heavy pressures.
- 1:03:58Yet, we're comfortable with passing guys off or making those
- 1:04:03adjustments after the ball is snapped and we kind of see what
- 1:04:06they're actually bringing. All right.
- 1:04:08So, obviously, there and I mean is it is it a week like this?
- 1:04:11Where that is something? Rudolph can really coach knowing
- 1:04:15this is a lesser team. If there's anything, you're
- 1:04:18trying to implement with that communication or offensive
- 1:04:22coordinator talking about making the right check is this a week
- 1:04:25to really? Let's bring this to the front.
- 1:04:27Before we get into this stretch of games, we're playing nothing
- 1:04:29but essentially, good competition from here on out.
- 1:04:36I mean, it's definitely going to be a point of emphasis that's
- 1:04:38probably something they talked about during the correction
- 1:04:40period on Sunday. It's probably something that
- 1:04:42they're going to work more on probably during I don't I don't
- 1:04:46know how they break down practice in terms of, you know
- 1:04:49what they work on offense, but if they have like a third down
- 1:04:51period, they're definitely going to work on that during third
- 1:04:54down period. So that's what I want to see.
- 1:04:59Is just some improvement again. I don't expect every time they
- 1:05:04bring six for us to pick it up. That's a, that's a big ask,
- 1:05:09okay. But but if we got to be more
- 1:05:11consistent then you know one out of eight or whatever it was.
- 1:05:15Yeah, Saturday, got it. All right, so there's some stuff
- 1:05:18we want to see on the offensive line.
- 1:05:19The big piece, get the young guys involved and let's see the
- 1:05:22communication, get better on blitzes.
- 1:05:25All right. Now, let's talk about the skill
- 1:05:27positions, even though we've hit it earlier, obviously we said
- 1:05:30Caleb Smith secure the room. It was great to see, blumrich
- 1:05:32and Gosnell get more involved this week, but of all the names,
- 1:05:35we've heard. The one named we have not heard
- 1:05:39other than his nasty downfield blocking his Jaden blue.
- 1:05:42How important is it to get his confidence up this week in
- 1:05:49overall start thinking. Now we have maybe six reliable
- 1:05:53wide receiver targets. He and I think what's strange is
- 1:05:57that we've done a good job of like scheming a couple other
- 1:05:59guys open. Predictably Gosnell in blumrich.
- 1:06:03I'd like to see us start working some some scheme to get blue,
- 1:06:08some open touches chance for him to get the ball in space and let
- 1:06:12him work a little bit because I don't know if it's a confidence
- 1:06:15thing right now but he's not getting good separation.
- 1:06:18When he's on the field, he hasn't seen a lot of targets and
- 1:06:23I think we need to start calling it.
- 1:06:25A little bit to get him comfortable in this office
- 1:06:27because he's going to need to play a role in this offense.
- 1:06:29Whether he ends up, you know, playing the role that I think
- 1:06:32that a lot of us thought he could be coming into the season.
- 1:06:35That's the question. But he's going to still need to
- 1:06:37play a role for us this year. So we need to start getting in
- 1:06:39some confidence. Yeah, it's definitely he's sort
- 1:06:45of like that. I don't want to say it's the
- 1:06:47linchpin. But I feel like he is because if
- 1:06:51you feel like, if you get him going because he does have a
- 1:06:54skill set, he has it will make things a year.
- 1:06:58So you for Caleb, it will make things easier for Connor and
- 1:07:01Gosnell. Even the Wayne just, he's like
- 1:07:04that one guy. So it's really going to be
- 1:07:08interesting to see. I hope they scheme.
- 1:07:11I hope that the game plan is like you said, around scheming
- 1:07:15him to where he gets the ball and he feels comfortable.
- 1:07:19All right, um notice the depth chart that our friend, David
- 1:07:23Cunningham put out. Did you see who was 2 on The X
- 1:07:27side? Yes, I'll be got it.
- 1:07:30Christian Moss Out There. Interested.
- 1:07:35The walk on Willie officially is no longer on the wide receiver
- 1:07:38depth, so we don't know it, but could Moss have been battling
- 1:07:43something. We had heard his name, mentioned
- 1:07:45a few times, how important to get him and you know somebody
- 1:07:50else coming back, Jalen Jones, how important to get them on the
- 1:07:53field for a ton of reps this week?
- 1:07:56Yeah, I mean, those are the two guys we were talking about
- 1:07:58preseason of kind of being that, you know, fourth, fifth, six
- 1:08:02guy. In the wide receiver room that
- 1:08:04we're going to need to count on to some degree this year.
- 1:08:08It's great seeing their names back on the depth chart in the
- 1:08:102D looking forward to seeing what they can do in some
- 1:08:15extended time. I know Moss, I think got a
- 1:08:17little run against BC, we haven't seen Jones yet but he's
- 1:08:22back in the depth chart. So I'm looking forward to see
- 1:08:24what he can do out there this week.
- 1:08:26And this is the week that you can kind of let some of these
- 1:08:28young guys cook a little bit. I feel like because I don't I
- 1:08:32don't think that That they're going to match up that great
- 1:08:34with us outside so I want to see us try to get some separation.
- 1:08:39I want to see us work in some young guys and get them some
- 1:08:42targets just like we did we do we talked about with blue?
- 1:08:45I want to see at least one or two routes schemed for moss and
- 1:08:49Jalen to kind of get the ball in their hands and make a play.
- 1:08:54All right, what can we do? As far as the tight ends go, you
- 1:08:59mentioned, you were not satisfied with their blocking.
- 1:09:03When they're in line or in the wing.
- 1:09:05What can we do to help? Obviously plan or lesser
- 1:09:09opponents? A confidence Builder.
- 1:09:11But what do you look for technique-wise in a game like
- 1:09:15this? I mean, I think right now the
- 1:09:18biggest problem is that, sometimes it's the assignment
- 1:09:22they're not reading the alignment of the defense
- 1:09:23correctly and they're missing their assignment.
- 1:09:26Okay? So I think What needs to be
- 1:09:28looked at this? We can correct.
- 1:09:29It is that you know you got a lot of times where you seeing
- 1:09:33Gallo ship when he when you shouldn't.
- 1:09:38You got it. You got him going up to the
- 1:09:40wrong backer, you get. I mean there's a lot of things
- 1:09:43that are just maybe just Gallo still getting adjusted to some
- 1:09:47of the elements of the offense because we didn't see as many of
- 1:09:51these blocking snafus from him last year.
- 1:09:54But I don't know whether that's just a comfort with the offense
- 1:09:57that he had last year that he hasn't gained this year.
- 1:10:01He looks a lot better. He's picked up the passing
- 1:10:04elements quickly. Okay, it seems like he has not
- 1:10:07picked up the Run. Elements of this offense as
- 1:10:10quickly. That's interesting, especially
- 1:10:13when Gallo was known as kind of The Blocking tight end last
- 1:10:16year. I mean, he got a little warm or
- 1:10:19of the offensive play maker role in James Mitchell, went out.
- 1:10:22So I find that interesting he hadn't picked it up that quick,
- 1:10:25but again, Being asked to do different things and maybe it's
- 1:10:30just not there again. We see him.
- 1:10:32Catch the ball. So we know we can do that but
- 1:10:36hopefully this week the blocking gets better.
- 1:10:39Because as we get again, this is sort of the one where it's like,
- 1:10:44we're in the woods right now, and we're about to hit the
- 1:10:48opening, and we've got a lot of people in front of us.
- 1:10:51We got to go through. All right, Brian, let's flip the
- 1:10:54defense, let's talk a couple things on that side of Ball.
- 1:10:57Let's just go ahead and say it with their play in the first two
- 1:11:00games. Dorian strong in Armani Captain
- 1:11:03have absolutely locked down the ones.
- 1:11:06Yeah, they played well other than, like, you know, one, one,
- 1:11:10one ball here, they're not a whole lot to, you know, shake my
- 1:11:15fist at for them Strong's had some good plays, you had the one
- 1:11:20where you got Burnell, that double move buys a flowers but
- 1:11:23you know who in the ACC, hasn't at one point Chapman with the
- 1:11:27big pick to set us up to really kind of get BC off their game
- 1:11:31early. So they're locked in there.
- 1:11:34But we did see Bree on. Murray back from suspension.
- 1:11:36In this week we saw DJ Harvey gets significantly more run this
- 1:11:40week outside and in the nickel which I think was good because
- 1:11:45it gave Harvey more confidence and it gave strong and Chapman.
- 1:11:50The opportunity to get a blow and stay fresh for longer into
- 1:11:53the game. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:11:56I think that really helped as the game wore on when Marie and
- 1:12:00Harvey had been in there, getting those reps getting those
- 1:12:03chances, but You know, the one touchdown that BC scored, it
- 1:12:11doesn't look, I think very is who he is, and I don't think, I
- 1:12:16think he's good for a blow, he's good situationally.
- 1:12:19But I think the next time there is a team inside the 30-yard
- 1:12:22line, I have a feeling real Marie won't be on the field.
- 1:12:26Yeah, I mean, you know, we talked about him struggling with
- 1:12:29you guys with with speed or size and yet He does a lot better
- 1:12:37when he's able to read and react.
- 1:12:39He doesn't do a great sometimes when he's asked to, to run with
- 1:12:43those guys and I'm looking for some improvement.
- 1:12:49Because right now, it's mostly inconsistencies and technique
- 1:12:52and decision-making on his part. If he can clean some of that up,
- 1:12:57he might be a little bit more reliable but I think he's good
- 1:13:00enough again. As you said to kind of give
- 1:13:02those key guys, a blow especially in certain parts of
- 1:13:05the field. Yeah, It's like he's gonna be a
- 1:13:07between the 30s guy because the coach down he gave up to Jaden
- 1:13:11Williams. I mean, As soon as you saw the
- 1:13:15lineup in the route here and you knew he was running a fade and
- 1:13:19in something, he never got around.
- 1:13:21And it was just an easy TouchDown for Williams.
- 1:13:24So, but again, That's okay. At least I'm going to go back to
- 1:13:29something prize said know your weaknesses, now we officially
- 1:13:33know. That's prions.
- 1:13:34Will you just sit still, the weakness here to here.
- 1:13:37He's fine though, but it's going to be like we got a
- 1:13:39situationally, get him in the beginning of drives.
- 1:13:45So it's going to be such a key thing there.
- 1:13:49All right. Brian.
- 1:13:51Let's talk about the D line because I think if they're in,
- 1:13:54we're holding them off till last.
- 1:13:56Because I think, If there is a group that has now in multiple
- 1:14:00games at both positions, I think this group has now become
- 1:14:07pleasantly surprising at least to me at least to me and yeah,
- 1:14:13thank you. Yeah, I thought this group was
- 1:14:16going to be fine this year. I thought they were going to
- 1:14:19struggle depth wise but I thought they would be fine.
- 1:14:22Not much more than that. And they've really been probably
- 1:14:27Outside of the linebackers, you know, playing as well as any
- 1:14:31other group on the defense. And because we knew that we had
- 1:14:34a veteran, secondary we had a veteran linebacker Corps and we
- 1:14:39had, you know, one vet and then a one vet at defensive end one
- 1:14:46vetted, the d-tackle room and then a couple of other young
- 1:14:48guys that were riding along. We weren't really sure, kind of
- 1:14:51what the deal I was going to look like, we knew we had some
- 1:14:53depth concerns at d-tackle because we only had proven guys
- 1:14:57there and you know, they've stepped up we've gotten some
- 1:15:02additional play out of Garbutt, he played a ton of snaps against
- 1:15:07ODU and then came back and had the game of his life against can
- 1:15:10see the very next week. We saw McRae was healthy this
- 1:15:15week, he got some more run. Look, good looks at least like
- 1:15:19he's going to be able to give us that second unit for that we
- 1:15:24need. And you know, interior I'm going
- 1:15:27to give a big shout-out to Wilfred Pinay.
- 1:15:30He's improved significantly said last year.
- 1:15:34Definitely Shrunk the gap between him and those like those
- 1:15:37big three that we just talked about in that room.
- 1:15:40You know, we thought there was going to be kind of a drop-off,
- 1:15:43you know, once you get got past Kendricks, Pollard and fuga and
- 1:15:47there isn't a significant drop-off there.
- 1:15:49Well there's not he's going out there, you know, obviously got
- 1:15:54to half-sack this week and there were numerous time you could see
- 1:15:57him being this guy off the snap, he's gain that weight.
- 1:16:00You know he was he was he was undersized last year and now
- 1:16:04Now, he's getting up into the to 80 range.
- 1:16:07He's an athlete. Anyway, I know when you look at
- 1:16:09this tape, like kids an athlete, they got to figure out what to
- 1:16:13do with him and I think that's great to see because now that
- 1:16:18you've got four on that you can continue to run and we saw that
- 1:16:21Saturday night, man you saw him. You saw him and Kendricks him
- 1:16:24and who you saw fuga and Pollard, you saw Pollard and
- 1:16:27Pinette that constant rotation which I think is something we've
- 1:16:31gotten even more excited about because It feel like although
- 1:16:36Brent prize, calling the defense, I think Chris Marv is
- 1:16:39handling the rotations. I do not foresee.
- 1:16:42Brent pry, handling both in. That's a good thing.
- 1:16:48And you mentioned CJ McRae. The more I see Cole Nelson in, I
- 1:16:56don't think it's next year, I think next year, he is going to
- 1:16:59be a very good defensive end I think two years from now.
- 1:17:02I think Full Nelson is going to be special You are you're seeing
- 1:17:07the flashes getting the time this year.
- 1:17:10I think next year, there's going to be some learning because
- 1:17:12you've got to be the guy. I think 20 24.
- 1:17:16I think that kids could be all-acc.
- 1:17:19Just what I'm seeing right now. We'll see man.
- 1:17:23I mean I like his progress. I like that, he's taking some
- 1:17:26steps coming into this year because we needed it, right?
- 1:17:28Like we. Yeah, we were never said we
- 1:17:30needed somebody else to step up. I'm glad to see McRae stepping
- 1:17:33up. I'm glad to see him stepping up.
- 1:17:34I think that's going to be play pay dividends down the road
- 1:17:38because we got a lot of young guys outside of Garbutt that are
- 1:17:40that are making some plays on that defensive end position.
- 1:17:44Abso-freakin'-lutely. All right y'all for making
- 1:17:47prediction let's just go with a few hokey Keys here.
- 1:17:51I think the first one Brian. As soon as I seen wolper didn't
- 1:17:54score again is we cannot play down to this opponent.
- 1:17:59We need to force our will upon them.
- 1:18:03Yeah. And that's going on both sides.
- 1:18:05I don't think the defense is going to have a problem making
- 1:18:08plays and keeping them in check. I need to see some level of
- 1:18:12domination from the offense. And yes you that out the gate.
- 1:18:16Well you won't I think you've already said you won't 250 on
- 1:18:19the ground. And I and I think what it is, I
- 1:18:23want at least 250 on the ground. And then, I mean, I want to get
- 1:18:27the younger, guys, some experience because I feel like
- 1:18:29that is going to be the biggest biggest thing this week.
- 1:18:32That's that's key. Number two is getting young,
- 1:18:35guys experience all over the field, all of all of the field.
- 1:18:39Every position, the young guys need to play.
- 1:18:42I think specifically, we got to look at the wide receiver room.
- 1:18:45Yeah, we talked about that in our in our know thyself.
- 1:18:50Get those young guys. Out there.
- 1:18:52I want to see. I want to see brown getting some
- 1:18:54some run out there. I'd like to see Devin get out
- 1:18:57there and get, give it at least a few couple throws in a few
- 1:19:01runs if we can. Yeah, on the defensive side of
- 1:19:06the ball, get some of the younger linebackers, some more
- 1:19:08play, get some of the younger guys.
- 1:19:10In the, the safety room somewhere play.
- 1:19:13What about the inside? What about, what about the line
- 1:19:16do you think? I mean, we, I mean, Burgos, and,
- 1:19:20who am I missing? Here.
- 1:19:23Walking on that, think, moist them moist and I think they've
- 1:19:26got some run already, but I think we need to look at the
- 1:19:29detangles to because obviously, you know, after next year, we're
- 1:19:33going to be losing to, I think, give them run know this.
- 1:19:37You haven't got her out there. Why, why not for this game, why
- 1:19:41not? Because you still have three
- 1:19:44games where you can, you can still save the shirt, so I'm
- 1:19:48with you everywhere on that field.
- 1:19:50Yeah. I mean, you could, you can
- 1:19:52unload the clip in my We should be up enough where I can unload
- 1:19:55the clip, walk home walk, ons. All right, I think this is a
- 1:20:00real big one and not only to for the rest of the season or if
- 1:20:06this is a big one for the rest of you.
- 1:20:07We've got to continue to play clean and when I say clean, I'm
- 1:20:10talking about the penalties. I know turnovers are going to
- 1:20:13happen. You know, you hold your hands up
- 1:20:15on that, but I don't want to see the dumb penalties again.
- 1:20:18I don't want to see the procedural stuff.
- 1:20:20We cleaned it up. Let's continue.
- 1:20:23To do that for the rest of the season because the less tiles we
- 1:20:26shoot ourselves in the foot. It's going to make it tougher on
- 1:20:30the other team especially if our defense is still going the way
- 1:20:33it's going. Yeah.
- 1:20:35And I think the big thing is we don't have to necessarily win
- 1:20:38the turnover battle, but we can't lose it.
- 1:20:40Yeah, we look at turnovers as far as the penalties.
- 1:20:44Yeah, we got to keep it around that, you know, 45 for 25 or 30
- 1:20:49that we had this week versus, you know, 15 for 110, that's a
- 1:20:56big difference. You can't give up an entire
- 1:20:58Drive. Extra the entire drive worth of
- 1:21:01penalties really two drives and if you look at it in penalties,
- 1:21:07compared to the ODU games, so that's got to be something that
- 1:21:10we keep up with, you know, a pi here.
- 1:21:14There, you know, ahold sometimes that happens.
- 1:21:18But we can't get burned by almost 50 yards, procedure,
- 1:21:21open, and penalties like we did against ODU.
- 1:21:23So keep that clean. Keep that moving.
- 1:21:26And I think we're going to be onto something, and I'm going to
- 1:21:28say the Last one here. We need some Beamer ball this
- 1:21:32week. We meet at least one defensive
- 1:21:34respectful team score. They're going to give us some
- 1:21:37opportunities both in the in the Special Teams game and with that
- 1:21:42offense throwing and putting the ball on the turf, alright,
- 1:21:45advantage of it, and get the ball in the end zone.
- 1:21:47I mean, if we play the way we, I think we can, we have the
- 1:21:51potential to put up 14 to 21 just on defense and special
- 1:21:54teams alone. All right, well then, if you're
- 1:21:57thinking that what's your prediction This game.
- 1:22:01My prediction for this game, is that the Hokies do not sleep,
- 1:22:05walk out. The gate, they are solid on
- 1:22:07offense and they are spectacular on defense.
- 1:22:09It's a forty one to nothing win for the Hokies.
- 1:22:12All right, I am not poor. Same exact margin of Victory.
- 1:22:16I say Hokies 44. I say Wofford three.
- 1:22:19I do think they break their streak and they can average 1.2
- 1:22:22game. But when they get their field
- 1:22:24gold, it's going to be against the sixth string wall homes in
- 1:22:27the fourth quarter after the first half, when we put 31
- 1:22:31points and basically cruise home from there.
- 1:22:35So I think big wins. Do I want to see more?
- 1:22:37Yeah, I'd love to see 60. I'd love to see 63 7 or 63 but I
- 1:22:44think since we know the importance of mixing in a lot of
- 1:22:47the younger guys, I think we get up something get-ups, five or
- 1:22:52six touchdowns. We're going to start getting
- 1:22:55everybody else in absolute freak and looting.
- 1:22:58All right, Brian. Let's look at the big screen.
- 1:23:00Wieners this weekend. A lot of really good games going
- 1:23:03on. Ranked battle up in Oregon this
- 1:23:06week, and I'm going to take it down south.
- 1:23:09I'm going to go down to the plains of Auburn.
- 1:23:11Where print prize former team goes on the road to play Auburn
- 1:23:17Auburn has struggled in their first two games.
- 1:23:19They almost lost to San Jose State at Auburn last weekend.
- 1:23:24I think they want, 2416 Penn State's going in there laying
- 1:23:28three points. And I think Penn State wins this
- 1:23:32game by about ten like 3121 because they're trying to get
- 1:23:37Brian hearts and fire down there, let him lose.
- 1:23:41Let him lose Penn State. They'll probably go ahead and
- 1:23:42buy them out on Sunday morning. What about you?
- 1:23:45What's yours? My big screener is one that has
- 1:23:50a little bit of ACC flavor a little bit of.
- 1:23:54All right, let's let's pile on. I've got Miami at Texas A&M.
- 1:24:00Let's keep piling on am, while the balls are old right here.
- 1:24:04So right now am is a five and a half Point favorite at home.
- 1:24:09Okay, I'm picking Miami in this one.
- 1:24:14I'm not sure if making you, the quarterback change is going to
- 1:24:17be what is needed. And we'll see if that's what
- 1:24:19that's what happens this week. But there could, there could be
- 1:24:22another acclimation period between getting a new signal
- 1:24:26caller in there. And before this offense is
- 1:24:28humming like it needs to to win and when I look at Miami there,
- 1:24:33a better quality opponent than App State in terms of the talent
- 1:24:38that they have on the field. So I don't think that I am is
- 1:24:45quite ready for prime time again, okay?
- 1:24:49Even with the quarterback change, if that's the route,
- 1:24:51they go. So I think Miami takes care of
- 1:24:53business in a close one, but I'm picking Miami to not only cover,
- 1:24:58but to win the game outright all righty.
- 1:25:03All right, we'll write those two down.
- 1:25:06Brian, has anything broken in the last hour?
- 1:25:10And 26 minutes? I think we're good, man.
- 1:25:14I don't see anything of import. All right, well that is going to
