- 0:00Welcome everyone to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:03I'm Ryan Muhammad, writer and moderator with Becker's
- 0:06Healthcare. And I'm thrilled to have with me
- 0:07today, doctor Jane Abraham,
- 0:09chairman of the department of hematology and medical
- 0:12oncology at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute.
- 0:15Doctor, welcome to the podcast. I'm very excited
- 0:17to have you join us today. I know
- 0:19you recently did another Becker's oncology webinar with
- 0:21me, so it's nice to speak with you
- 0:23again. But to get us started, would you
- 0:25mind please introduce yourself for the audience and
- 0:27tell us a bit about your background?
- 0:29Sure. Thank you, Mariah, for having me again.
- 0:33So I'm Jame Abraham. I'm the department chair,
- 0:37for the hematology and oncology,
- 0:40at Cleveland Clinic, and, I'm a professor of
- 0:43medicine
- 0:44at the Leona College of Medicine.
- 0:46So as the department chair or, if I
- 0:49can say the enterprise
- 0:50chair of the HemOnc,
- 0:52I'm responsible for our
- 0:55cancer caregivers,
- 0:56in Ohio and Florida
- 0:59and then Abu Dhabi.
- 1:00Our goal is to make sure
- 1:02we provide,
- 1:03the best care and across
- 1:06our enterprise
- 1:07for patients with cancer.
- 1:11Yeah. Wonderful. Thank you so much for giving
- 1:13us that background.
- 1:14As a fellow Ohioan that now lives, in
- 1:17another state, I'm glad that you're doing what
- 1:18you're doing for the state. So what are
- 1:20some of your top priorities for the rest
- 1:22of the year, do you think?
- 1:25So 2025,
- 1:28we will continue to focus on our mission,
- 1:31that's providing the best care for our patients,
- 1:34making sure,
- 1:36we can provide
- 1:37most advanced and and then new cancer
- 1:42treatment for our patients who are coming through
- 1:43our doors, you know, here at,
- 1:45Ohio,
- 1:46in Florida,
- 1:47and Abu Dhabi.
- 1:49To do that, we need to continue to
- 1:52make sure we continue to support our team,
- 1:55recruit
- 1:56number of doctors, continue to recruit number of
- 1:58doctors to our team
- 2:00because
- 2:01we are expanding our services
- 2:04and our we continue to grow.
- 2:06So our my number one number two priority
- 2:09is continue to recruit people,
- 2:12doctors, and other team members to the team.
- 2:15And the third priority is continue to look
- 2:17for newer
- 2:18treatment options,
- 2:21so that we are
- 2:22staying
- 2:23ahead of the curve
- 2:25as far as the cancer treatment is concerned,
- 2:28as standard of treatment,
- 2:30and then, of course, in our clinical trials.
- 2:33So, and then, of course, we continue to
- 2:35educate. We have a you know, one of
- 2:37the largest fellowship program in the country.
- 2:39We continue to educate our fellows,
- 2:42and and we have APP fellowship.
- 2:44So we train in a huge workforce
- 2:47to support,
- 2:49that increasing
- 2:50need for cancer care in our country.
- 2:55Got it. Yeah. Thank you so much for
- 2:56giving us that that overview.
- 2:58Are there any programs
- 3:00or initiatives that have been the most needle
- 3:02moving for you or the organization,
- 3:05in 2024?
- 3:07So 2024,
- 3:09we continue to grow.
- 3:12We saw more patients than before.
- 3:15Some of the unique programs,
- 3:17we introduce
- 3:19a large number of new clinical trials for
- 3:22our patients.
- 3:24Most of them are first in humans.
- 3:28So number of novel treatment
- 3:30options came through
- 3:32in our site, mostly at our main campus
- 3:34in Cleveland.
- 3:36So that is one of our biggest this
- 3:37thing. And then our team has made tremendous
- 3:41progress in
- 3:42cellular therapy,
- 3:43mainly in Till,
- 3:46tumor infiltrating lymphocytes,
- 3:47and, of course, and other CAR T products,
- 3:51CAR t treatments in, heme malignancy.
- 3:55So we are really proud of our team's
- 3:57clinical
- 3:58and research effort. And then if you look
- 4:00at
- 4:01a number of our colleagues have press have
- 4:04published
- 4:05journals which are, you know, really practice
- 4:08changing,
- 4:10across the country or across the world.
- 4:15Yeah. Absolutely. And and, doctor, before I let
- 4:17you go, the last thing I really want
- 4:19to ask you is, how are you thinking
- 4:21about growth in member experience,
- 4:23as a whole?
- 4:25So,
- 4:27again,
- 4:28let let me rephrase that question. Again, when
- 4:30we continue to grow,
- 4:32we want to make sure
- 4:34our
- 4:35patients
- 4:36get the best experience,
- 4:38and has you number. I know cancer is
- 4:41not the easiest diagnosis.
- 4:43We want to make sure,
- 4:45we,
- 4:46take care of patients
- 4:48holistically, you know, from the diagnosis to treatment
- 4:52to supporting them physically and emotionally.
- 4:56So patient experience,
- 4:58is, our forefront. I know that's we continue
- 5:01to focus on that. And at the same
- 5:03time, we continue to support our team.
- 5:06How do we continue to support them
- 5:08when
- 5:09we see more patients
- 5:11than before?
- 5:13And as you know, Maria,
- 5:15the world is getting complicated with
- 5:18genomics,
- 5:20new treatments coming through every day,
- 5:23and now the AI is really coming to
- 5:26disrupt
- 5:27the existing
- 5:28care delivery,
- 5:30diagnostics,
- 5:31and even, you know, the drug discovery.
- 5:34So how do we continue to support our
- 5:36team
- 5:37in this disruptive
- 5:39environment? So we continue to focus on all
- 5:42these things,
- 5:44when we look for look forward to 2025.
- 5:48Got it. Yeah. Absolutely. That makes a lot
- 5:50of sense. And thank you so much for
- 5:51those final thoughts. It's definitely been, a very
- 5:53informative discussion, doctor. So I wanna thank you,
- 5:56for coming back on Becker's HealthCare,
- 5:58and I look forward to connecting with you
- 6:00again soon.
- 6:02Thank you, Maria.
