Latest / Twin Cities Territory / BONUS SHOW: Mick Abel goes to the IL in another blow to the Twins
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: All right, hello, and welcome back to Twins City's territory
- 0:12Speaker 1: for a bonus show here on this Monday, April the twentieth, afternoon,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Zach Pierce here with you, editor at the Athletic Joined.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Let me make it at the point that yes, that way,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Dan Hayes, our Athletic Minnesota Twins Beat writer Tyler Duffy
- 0:29Speaker 1: has the afternoon off, but we'll be back with us
- 0:31Speaker 1: later this week. We're coming to you for a second
- 0:34Speaker 1: time today because shortly after we published our latest episode
- 0:39Speaker 1: this morning, we got some breaking news from the Twins Beat, Dan,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and what better way to show the world than to
- 0:47Speaker 1: play your tweet. Look at that Twins starter Mick Abel,
- 0:52Speaker 1: who is scheduled to start the series opener against the
- 0:56Speaker 1: New York Mets Tuesday night, is instead headed to the
- 1:00Speaker 1: injured list fifteen day with right elbow inflammation. It's obviously
- 1:08Speaker 1: disappointing news.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Dan.
- 1:09Speaker 1: We spent a good chunk of the show today earlier
- 1:13Speaker 1: today talking about how starting pitching had been the one
- 1:16Speaker 1: bright spot from a weekly sweep against the reds. Abel
- 1:21Speaker 1: did not pitch in that series, but had two great
- 1:24Speaker 1: outings his last few times out coming off a great
- 1:27Speaker 1: one against Boston last time you pitched, so he had
- 1:31Speaker 1: been a real bright spot. The Twins all of a
- 1:32Speaker 1: sudden look like they have a wealth of starting pitching,
- 1:36Speaker 1: even in a light of Pablo Lopez's spring training injury.
- 1:39Speaker 1: But now able heads to the il. Twins aren't too
- 1:42Speaker 1: worried about it, though, Dan, what's the latest there in
- 1:45Speaker 1: that situation.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, the ambiguity earlier when we talked about Connor prelib
- 1:50Speaker 2: coming up to the taxi squad and Kendrew Rojas coming
- 1:54Speaker 2: up on what they were going to do. Now we
- 1:56Speaker 2: have a little bit more clarity to it. It's funny.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I think that's a ten to fifty seven am is
- 2:01Speaker 2: when we got the news and tweeted it out, and
- 2:04Speaker 2: I think I have literally just tweeted out our new
- 2:06Speaker 2: episode a few minutes earlier. So it definitely I'm surprised,
- 2:12Speaker 2: but not surprised just because we knew something was up right,
- 2:16Speaker 2: like the fact that there were two guys coming up.
- 2:19Speaker 2: It seemed a little strange. You're right, the Twins. I
- 2:24Speaker 2: got word from one person in ables camp that they're not.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It doesn't seem like it's too serious with the injury.
- 2:36Speaker 2: It's right elbow inflammation for Mickabel, and I got the
- 2:39Speaker 2: Twins to also confirm that a little bit later. So
- 2:43Speaker 2: I guess if there's a silver lining in it. As
- 2:47Speaker 2: Cosmo walks around in the background, I guess if there's
- 2:50Speaker 2: a silver lining in this. Both parties don't seem overly
- 2:56Speaker 2: concerned about mcabel's right elbow inflammation. This is something they're
- 2:59Speaker 2: trying to get out in front of We'll get way
- 3:01Speaker 2: more information on this on Tuesday. This is something where
- 3:04Speaker 2: it's an off day. The Twins are in New York.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I'm still at home flying on Tuesday morning, but no
- 3:11Speaker 2: access to them. But I'm guessing that the MRI has
- 3:15Speaker 2: already occurred. This It's been a few days since Makeabele
- 3:18Speaker 2: pitched last Obviously it was gonna pitch Tuesday's opener in
- 3:21Speaker 2: New York. So I would imagine the MRI has occurred.
- 3:25Speaker 2: For them to come out and say it's not too serious,
- 3:27Speaker 2: that is something that you should breathe a sigh of relief.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I mean, I gotta tell you, Zach, you won't believe this.
- 3:35Speaker 2: But the reaction online when we said mick Abel has
- 3:38Speaker 2: right elbow information, everyone handled it miraculously. Well, wow, was yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 2: you know, nobody jumped off the hen Bridge nothing like.
- 3:48Speaker 2: There was no fans going crazy over it being facetious
- 3:52Speaker 2: every like I had I already to tweet somebody that
- 3:55Speaker 2: they use their jump to conclusions map because he said,
- 3:57Speaker 2: Tommy John, look, typically this is early. And Cody Laurson
- 4:04Speaker 2: also had the same elbow inflammation and was optimistic last week.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I think there's young guys that know themselves well and
- 4:13Speaker 2: speak up versus pitching through it, which is where you
- 4:17Speaker 2: get into trouble. And it's April and it's cold, so
- 4:21Speaker 2: you know, hopefully this is just a scare. The Twins
- 4:25Speaker 2: will be very cautious with Mick Abel There's no question
- 4:28Speaker 2: about that, Like this is a guy that they are
- 4:30Speaker 2: very happy with what they've seen so far. Last thirteen innings,
- 4:34Speaker 2: we talked about him finally getting some good conditioned games.
- 4:37Speaker 2: The weather was good for both those starts. Thirteen innings,
- 4:41Speaker 2: sixteen strikeouts, no runs allowed, Twins win both those games.
- 4:45Speaker 2: It's it's what his potential is. We didn't know if
- 4:49Speaker 2: he was going to reach that when he came over
- 4:51Speaker 2: last year. He struggled a little bit with the Twins.
- 4:53Speaker 2: After the trade. He was in the Joan Durant trade,
- 4:55Speaker 2: first guy from that to come to the majors and
- 4:59Speaker 2: he's definitely got the stuff. He started to show it.
- 5:02Speaker 2: So this is it. It's rough news, there's no question,
- 5:06Speaker 2: because this is a big hit to the rotation. But
- 5:08Speaker 2: it's not season ending news at the moment, and that's
- 5:11Speaker 2: a you know, given the two months ago. It really was.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I was right now two months ago when Pablo Lopez
- 5:17Speaker 2: we found out he was out for the season with
- 5:20Speaker 2: Tommy John needing Tommy John surgery. So if that's the case,
- 5:24Speaker 2: you know, comparing it to that, that's it's a much
- 5:26Speaker 2: better place to be. Still is a major hit. The
- 5:30Speaker 2: one part is they like the two pitchers that I
- 5:34Speaker 2: assume we'll see Connor Prelip and Kendrick Rojas on Wednesday.
- 5:40Speaker 2: They piggybacked in their last outing at Triple A. The
- 5:44Speaker 2: Twins have a TVD for Wednesday, Sam and Woods Richardson
- 5:46Speaker 2: on Tuesday. The Twins really like Rojas and Prelip and
- 5:50Speaker 2: we can get into them here in a second, but
- 5:53Speaker 2: you know it, they have some power arms coming up
- 5:55Speaker 2: to replace a power arm, so at least there's that,
- 5:59Speaker 2: and this is one of the few areas the team
- 6:01Speaker 2: has depth is in that starting rotation area, but unquestionably
- 6:05Speaker 2: it's still a big hit because Mickabel's been so good
- 6:07Speaker 2: those last two times out in full of promise.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Able is twenty four years old, a former first round
- 6:14Speaker 1: pick for the Phillies, came over in that trade with
- 6:17Speaker 1: Philadelphia at the deadline last year. Made four starts at
- 6:22Speaker 1: the end of last season, and actually they weren't all starts.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Excuse me, two starts, two relief appearances. The first two
- 6:30Speaker 1: did not go well, the last one very similar to
- 6:32Speaker 1: these last two games. He went six innings against his
- 6:34Speaker 1: old team, the Phillies, struck out nine, just three hits,
- 6:37Speaker 1: allowed no run. So he's had a good stretch even
- 6:40Speaker 1: dating back to last season for the Twins. Certainly certainly
- 6:45Speaker 1: a setback. Of course, the team is always going to
- 6:47Speaker 1: say it's not too serious, and I have no information
- 6:50Speaker 1: to the contrary. But we'll see how it goes and
- 6:55Speaker 1: the Twins, as you mentioned, Dan are going to have
- 6:57Speaker 1: to shuffle things up a little bit in his apps,
- 7:00Speaker 1: and we'll talk a little bit more about that after
- 7:02Speaker 1: this quick word from our sponsor.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Support for today's episode comes from Square and they've got
- 7:08Speaker 3: big news. During Squar's Biannual Releases event. They launched a

- 8:12Speaker 1: All right, we're back again special bonus episode this Monday afternoon,
- 8:18Speaker 1: after the news that mckabele Twins starting pitcher has gone
- 8:22Speaker 1: to the injured list. He was scheduled to start Tuesday
- 8:25Speaker 1: series opener against a New York Mets team that is
- 8:29Speaker 1: very desperate for a win, which we spoke about on
- 8:31Speaker 1: our show earlier today. Dan Simeon Woods Richardson was scheduled
- 8:36Speaker 1: to pitch Wednesday. He will now move up to Tuesday.
- 8:38Speaker 1: The Twins have had had days off Thursday and Monday,
- 8:41Speaker 1: so rest not an issue for moving him up. And
- 8:45Speaker 1: then what is the plan for Wednesday or do we
- 8:47Speaker 1: not know the plan yet for Wednesday?
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we won't know the plan untill sometime Tuesday night.
- 8:52Speaker 2: My guess the Twins will keep it shrouded in secrecy.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Bit that's their right to do that. They don't want
- 8:57Speaker 2: to give the Mets an advantage and looking to it. However,
- 9:00Speaker 2: it's gonna be some form I would imagine of Connor
- 9:03Speaker 2: Prelip and Kendry Rojas. Both guys have pitched in a
- 9:07Speaker 2: piggyback situation. In their April twelfth April sixteenth outing, Prelip
- 9:13Speaker 2: went five, struck out eight. Rojas came in followed him
- 9:17Speaker 2: with three scoreless out of the bullpen. So it wouldn't
- 9:19Speaker 2: shock me if we see something like that and pre Lip,
- 9:24Speaker 2: you know, Rojas is the number nine prospect in Aaron
- 9:29Speaker 2: Gleeman's Athletic Top forty rankings. Second shout out to that today,
- 9:33Speaker 2: Prelip is number five in those rankings. And this is
- 9:36Speaker 2: a guy that they've really been high on. They used
- 9:38Speaker 2: the forty eighth overall pick of the twenty twenty two
- 9:41Speaker 2: draft to select him out of Alabama. He's a Wisconsin guy.
- 9:45Speaker 2: He's from Toma, left hander. He's had Tommy John surgery twice,
- 9:50Speaker 2: including after coming to the Twins. So this is a
- 9:53Speaker 2: guy that was their minor league pitcher of the Year
- 9:55Speaker 2: last year, and basically he was on a very short
- 9:59Speaker 2: schedule last year. They were really just trying to build
- 10:01Speaker 2: him up and give him innings because Connor Prelib, you know,
- 10:04Speaker 2: because of all the arm issues, had not pitched, had
- 10:09Speaker 2: not built up much of a workload in his pro career.
- 10:12Speaker 2: In fact, we're talking about a guy that, even though
- 10:14Speaker 2: we're now talking he's in his fifth season in the organization,
- 10:17Speaker 2: he only has one hundred and twenty eight innings one
- 10:20Speaker 2: hundred and twenty eight and the third and he only
- 10:22Speaker 2: got twenty eight in college, so there's not a lot
- 10:25Speaker 2: of wear and tear on that arm. Last year he
- 10:27Speaker 2: got to eighty two and two thirds innings between Wichitah
- 10:30Speaker 2: and Saint Paul, and this year because he went that
- 10:34Speaker 2: whole season and it was on a regular starting schedule,
- 10:37Speaker 2: or they had him on a once a week schedule
- 10:39Speaker 2: last year as a starter just to build up that workload.
- 10:42Speaker 2: This year he's on a more regular starting rotation schedule
- 10:46Speaker 2: and he's added a curveball to give him a little
- 10:48Speaker 2: bit more to attack hitters from both sides of the plate.
- 10:51Speaker 2: So this is a guy that they're excited about. He
- 10:54Speaker 2: throws ninety five. There had been talk that he could
- 10:58Speaker 2: play his way into the bullpen and we'll see like
- 11:02Speaker 2: what his long term projection is. But he's got an
- 11:05Speaker 2: electric arm, and so it's somebody that you know, we
- 11:08Speaker 2: talked about Kendrick Rojas's electric arm in the earlier show,
- 11:11Speaker 2: throwing ninety eight, ninety nine with a slider, and he's
- 11:15Speaker 2: got so much stuff too. These guys both project as
- 11:18Speaker 2: starters and could be very talented guys. So you're you're
- 11:23Speaker 2: dropping off from Mickabel, but you're adding to very probably
- 11:27Speaker 2: the two hardest throwers aside from TODs Bradley on this
- 11:30Speaker 2: entire pitching staffer are now joining the team here on Tuesday,
- 11:34Speaker 2: So there is a lot to be intrigued by with
- 11:38Speaker 2: Connor Preliv coming up, and I wouldn't again be shocked
- 11:40Speaker 2: if he gets to start because he's been acting as
- 11:42Speaker 2: a starter. Both are lefties, so it's gonna be something.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Wednesday should be an interesting game to watch just because
- 11:51Speaker 2: of all that intrigue with these two guys.
- 11:55Speaker 1: With the bullpen issues the team has had to dan
- 11:58Speaker 1: currently twenty third in e r A in the league.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Five point seven I believe was the number. Any audition
- 12:07Speaker 1: of a fresh arm is probably something Twins fans are
- 12:10Speaker 1: at least intrigued to see. Obviously, you don't want it
- 12:12Speaker 1: to happen via injury to a promising starting pitcher, of course,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but certainly Kendrick Rojas and Connor Prelib will have a
- 12:20Speaker 1: chance to at least get themselves a spot in the bullpen.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Also of note, Royce Lewis returns on Tuesday to the
- 12:28Speaker 1: Twins lineup, so as one player leaves, another comes in
- 12:33Speaker 1: back from injury, so hopefully that gives the Twins a
- 12:36Speaker 1: boost as well. Four game losing streak now mckable to
- 12:40Speaker 1: the il certainly a tough few days after that nice
- 12:44Speaker 1: stretch of three straight series wins and how uplifting the
- 12:49Speaker 1: conversation seemed just a week ago after they touched up
- 12:52Speaker 1: Garrett Crochet for eleventy billion runs or whatever it was
- 12:55Speaker 1: in those first few innings. But we'll see how they
- 12:58Speaker 1: weather this storm, and we'll see whether Mickabel really can
- 13:01Speaker 1: make it back after fifteen days. Dan prediction, I think
- 13:05Speaker 1: he's going to be Okay, I'm asking you, I'm asking
- 13:08Speaker 1: you to predict an injury now. So this is this
- 13:11Speaker 1: is where we.
- 13:12Speaker 2: This is a segment for all our Calci and poly market.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Yes, yes, exactly.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I'm gonna say the Twins will be a little bit cautious.
- 13:20Speaker 2: He's too big of a prize to rush back now
- 13:26Speaker 2: them saying it's not too serious. He's gonna miss Attle time.
- 13:31Speaker 2: But it will be something I think where they think
- 13:33Speaker 2: they can rehabit. It's not gonna be fifteen days. That's
- 13:35Speaker 2: just my guess. And by the way, last time I
- 13:38Speaker 2: made this prediction was Royce Lewis Royce Lewis is guess
- 13:43Speaker 2: who I was dead wrong on Royce Lewis.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Royce Lewis so back as soon as possible? Is that right?
- 13:49Speaker 2: Yeah? Royce is first game eligible to come off the IL.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Royce Lewis has come off the Aisle so Calci and
- 13:55Speaker 2: poly market listeners don't listen to me, so.
- 13:59Speaker 1: That might be a good omen Twins fans Dan Hayes
- 14:02Speaker 1: predicting a longer absence for Mickabel. We'll see what happens.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Tuesday night.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Twins are back on the field in New York. We'll
- 14:12Speaker 1: be back with you on Wednesday, barring some more breaking
- 14:15Speaker 1: news in the meantime. But as always, thanks for listening
