Rare La Pérouse expedition letters surface ahead of Paris auction
Rare personal letters from the 1785 La Pérouse expedition have emerged within a collection of engravings being prepared for auction in Paris. Written by Jean-André Mongez to Louise Victoria Le Cloustier, the daughter of a minor noble family, the letters appear to express regret over his past behavior and unhappiness about her marriage. Mongez was with the expedition, which disappeared in 1788. Ludovic Miran, an expert for the auctioneers, told The Guardian that personal documents from the voyage are extremely rare; most surviving records are scientific.
