- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Wednesday. It's the 26th of March.
- 0:16And you have said, come on, Sean, come into my day.
- 0:19Let us read the Bible together. And that is what we're going to
- 0:23do. We're going to be continuing
- 0:25along in this book of John where we don't just hear what Jesus
- 0:29does, but we hear the stories around why he doesn't and what
- 0:33he's thinking and what he's sharing with his disciples and
- 0:36the way that he's testing their faith and growing their faith
- 0:39and challenging their assumptions.
- 0:42And as he does that with his disciples back in those days,
- 0:46well, I think he's doing that with us as well as his disciples
- 0:49here today. So as we hear today's reading,
- 0:53let us just lay bare, hold gently all of the things that we
- 0:59think we know to be true, and let God's words wash over us and
- 1:05convict us of His truth so that our beliefs can be held up in
- 1:10the light of His Word. So let's do that, friends.
- 1:13Let us hear His words as captured in John chapter 5.
- 1:28Afterward, Jesus returned to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish
- 1:32holy days. Inside the city, near the Sheep
- 1:35Gate, there was the pool of Bethesda with five covered
- 1:39porches. Crowds of sick people, blind,
- 1:43lame or paralysed, lay on the porches.
- 1:47One of the men lying there had been sick for 38 years.
- 1:51When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he
- 1:55asked him, Would you like to get well?
- 1:58I can't, Sir, the sick man said. For I've had no one to put me
- 2:03into the pool. When the water bubbles up,
- 2:05someone else always gets there ahead of me.
- 2:09Jesus told him, stand up, pick up your mat and walk.
- 2:15Instantly the man was healed. He rolled up his sleeping mat
- 2:19and began walking. But this miracle happened on the
- 2:23Sabbath. So the Jewish leaders objected.
- 2:26They said to the man who was cured, You can't work on the
- 2:29Sabbath. The law doesn't allow you to
- 2:32carry that sleeping mat. But he replied, The man who
- 2:36healed me told me, Pick up your mat and walk.
- 2:39Who said such a thing as this? They demanded.
- 2:43The man didn't know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.
- 2:48But afterward Jesus found him in the temple and told him, Now you
- 2:52were well, so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen
- 2:57to you. Then the man went and told the
- 2:59Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him.
- 3:04So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the
- 3:07Sabbath rules. But Jesus replied, My Father is
- 3:11always working, and so am I. So the Jewish leaders tried all
- 3:17the harder to find a way to kill him.
- 3:19For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his
- 3:23Father, thereby making himself equal with God.
- 3:28So Jesus explained, I tell you the truth, the Son can do
- 3:33nothing by himself. He does only what He sees the
- 3:36Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the
- 3:40Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and
- 3:44shows him everything he is doing.
- 3:46In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works
- 3:51than healing this man. Then you will truly be
- 3:54astonished. For just as the Father gives
- 3:57life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to
- 4:02anyone he wants. In addition, the Father judges
- 4:06no one. Instead, he has given the Son
- 4:10absolute authority to judge so that everyone will honour the
- 4:14Son just as they honour the Father.
- 4:17Anyone who does not honour the Son is certainly not honouring
- 4:21the Father who sent him. I tell you the truth, those who
- 4:25listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal
- 4:30life. They will never be condemned for
- 4:33their sins, but they have already passed from death into
- 4:37life. And I assure you that the time
- 4:40is coming. Indeed, it's here now when the
- 4:43dead will hear My voice, the voice of the Son of God, And
- 4:49those who listen will live. The Father has life in himself,
- 4:54and He has granted that same life, giving power to His Son,
- 5:00and He has given Him authority to judge everyone because He is
- 5:05the Son of Man. Don't be so surprised.
- 5:09Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves
- 5:13will hear the voice of God's Son, and they will rise again.
- 5:19Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life,
- 5:24and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience
- 5:29judgement. I can do nothing on my own.
- 5:32I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgement is just
- 5:38because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own
- 5:43will. If I were to testify on my own
- 5:47behalf, my testimony would not be valid.
- 5:51But someone else is also testifying about me, and I
- 5:55assure you that everything he says about me is true.
- 5:59In fact, you sent investigators to listen to John the Baptist,
- 6:03and his testimony about me was true.
- 6:06Of course, I have no need of human witnesses, but I say these
- 6:11things so you might be saved. John was like a burning and
- 6:17shining lamp, and you were excited for a while about his
- 6:21message. But I have a greater witness
- 6:24than John, my teachings and my miracles.
- 6:28The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they proved
- 6:32that He sent me, and the Father who sent me has testified about
- 6:37me himself. You have never heard His voice
- 6:41or seen Him face to face, and you do not have His message in
- 6:45your hearts because you do not believe me, the one He sent to
- 6:51you. You search the scriptures
- 6:55because you think they give you eternal life, but the scriptures
- 6:59point to me, yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.
- 7:05Your approval means nothing to me because I know you don't have
- 7:10God's love within you. For I have come to you in my
- 7:14Father's name, and you have rejected me.
- 7:18Yet if others come in their own name, you gladly welcome them.
- 7:23No wonder you can't believe. For you gladly honour each
- 7:26other, but you don't care about the honour that comes from the
- 7:30one who alone is God. Yet it isn't I who will accuse
- 7:36you before the Father. Moses will accuse you.
- 7:39Yes, Moses, in whom you put your hopes.
- 7:44If you really believed Moses, you would believe me because he
- 7:48wrote about me. But since you don't believe what
- 7:52he wrote, how will you believe what I say?
- 8:05Jesus, thank you for your truth. Thank You that you are truth and
- 8:11that when we read the Scriptures, it's not the
- 8:13scriptures that are going to bring us to eternal life with
- 8:17you and the Father and the Spirit, but it's you, Jesus,
- 8:22it's you. So when we read this scripture
- 8:25together and when we hear your teaching, let us always be drawn
- 8:31closer to you. Jesus, come to us and meet us in
- 8:34your Word so that we can experience you more fully,
- 8:39because it's in you, Jesus, and our relationship with you and
- 8:42your magnificent generosity reaching out to us that we taste
- 8:49that life that you give us. Ah, so we come before you now,
- 8:53Jesus, our living, loving Saviour with whom we can have a
- 8:58real relationship with. And we pray that you draw ever
- 9:03closer to us. Well, your arms are already open
- 9:07with nothing between us. May we always draw nearer to you
- 9:12as you would have us. Oh, you are wonderful, Jesus,
- 9:17and we're so delighted to know you and love you and be loved by
- 9:21you. So we bask in that love and in
- 9:25your presence and your company. And we pray all of this through
- 9:28your life. Giving name Amen.
