Latest / Inside Country with Wayne D / Jake Owen Says Morgan Wallen May Have Too Many Songs?
Transcript
- 0:01Uh, excited to have this guy in studio. He just put out a
- 0:04brand spanking new album. But we're just catching up on life with Jaco and
- 0:07how you've been. What's up, man, I've been really good. I've
- 0:11been busy and been good. Though. I gotta say you look well rested,
- 0:15like do I Yeah, Oh that's good. I appreciate it. Here
- 0:18I am my buddy told me last time, he said that he thought I've
- 0:23had a good energy. He was like, dude, your energy is good
- 0:26right now. You like you feel good? I was like, I feel
- 0:28I feel really good. Yeah. Having pro for the summertime is um is
- 0:32fun for me because uh yeah, she's in school all year, so to
- 0:37spend some time on the road with her and UM and yeah, I just
- 0:40enjoy it. I just think I feel better anyways in the summertime. It's
- 0:43kind of what I grew up loving. So yeah, at one, let's
- 0:46be honest, Jaco and music, for some reasons, has always screamed summertime.
- 0:49It was better in the summer. Yeah, right, I want to
- 0:52dive into the new album in a second, But what what have you been
- 0:55up to outside of music, Because obviously, dad life is fantastic but but
- 0:59what else to catch people up on all things Jake Owen, Man, I've
- 1:02been doing all kinds of stuff outside of the music, um, trying to
- 1:07be you know, I like to be a good friend of people. So
- 1:10I just always like being there for my friends and doing things where I don't
- 1:15come across as a guy that always is the center of attention, you know.
- 1:19I try to do things for others. So I've been doing that.
- 1:22I've been playing golf. I'm playing a lot of golf. I've got some
- 1:25golf tournaments coming up. I'm gonna play in this celebrity Tahoe thing out in
- 1:30Tahoe. I played that last year, so that's coming up in a couple
- 1:32of weeks. And other than that, just playing shows on the road and
- 1:37stay busy. Well, I gotta ask you, it's I'm gonna come back
- 1:40to the charitable Jake Owen, who's doing stuff for others. But I gotta
- 1:44ask I see on social media you golf with our our morning guy, Bobby
- 1:48Bones. Yeah, we see the pictures and we see some videos every now
- 1:52and again, but we never get the outcome shared with the outcomes. How
- 1:56do how does Jake versus Bobby Pan out. We never play, We never
- 2:00play like against each other. Just go out and play some golf and have
- 2:04fun. But uh, Bobby, Bobby's getting a lot better. Actually,
- 2:07he's a he's a good athlete. He's got a good golf swing. He's
- 2:10lefty, so it's hard to kind of correlate, like this is how you
- 2:14do it from my side of the fence. Yeah, but he's he hits
- 2:16a good he hits a good. God, I gotta get out there.
- 2:19I can't tell you the last time if you gotta get out there. If
- 2:22you were like, hey, let's go golfing, I'd be like, can
- 2:23I use your Let's go golfing, But like I don't even have clubs?
- 2:28Can use yours? Yeah? Yeah, you can't take me through A show
- 2:32happened not long ago that Darius Rucker has put a lot of time and efforts
- 2:36over the years his annual Darius and Friends show for saying Jude Children's Research Hospital.
- 2:40Uh, obviously, country music and saying jud go hand in hand together,
- 2:44So duh if if they invite you. But when it comes to working
- 2:47with Darius on something that he's really put his his heart into it. For
- 2:51the last thirteen twelve thirteen years. Yeah, what was that like to be
- 2:54a part of the lineup that lineup? And what do those shows mean to
- 2:58you? Because you get to enjoy him as a in a little bit too,
- 3:00right, Yeah, there's so many others that you look forward to seeing
- 3:02here and playing. Um and I did that night for sure. But as
- 3:07I mentioned a little bit ago, um, you know, doing stuff for
- 3:12other people is always what is more gratifying than than just being selfish doing things
- 3:16for yourself. And I think in our business a lot of us as artists
- 3:20can be un can ride the line of sometimes being a little selfish and it
- 3:24always being about us and what we're doing. So to help a friend out
- 3:29who's he's helped me many times before too with my foundation and friends. Helping
- 3:35friends raise awareness and money for a great cause is always is always what I
- 3:39would rather be thought of as down the road because those are the things people
- 3:44remember well. So let me ask you that is that something you because you've
- 3:47had I don't want to say a long career because it sounds like I'm calling
- 3:51you old and I'm definitely not doing that, but but uh, the length
- 3:54of time you've had in country music and creating music is a charitable side,
- 4:00something that you learn as you go, because obviously you don't. You get
- 4:02into this because you love it. You want to make music, this is
- 4:05what you want to do for a living. At what point your careers are
- 4:09like, Man, I could I could do more than just write the music
- 4:12and create the music, Like, I can make a difference outside of that.
- 4:15Well, I bet I've had a record deal now for you know,
- 4:20sixteen years maybe, and I bet for a little over ten or eleven of
- 4:25those we've had the foundation. So I think like the first five years of
- 4:28my career, I was kind of trying to, you know, figure it
- 4:30all out. And that's understandable for a lot of young artists. But I
- 4:35think it's really important to also let people know that the sooner the better to
- 4:40start. You have a voice and you can do anything. You can help
- 4:44anyone any place. It's just a matter of using your passion and your voice
- 4:47and your platform to the best that you can outside of music, and I
- 4:53always encourage people to do that. I know it's been really fulfilling for me
- 4:56and my family in my hometown, and the people we've been able to help
- 5:00that have been affected by are not not my help. I mean, I'm
- 5:04just a piece of it. But our community comes together and we do great
- 5:09things every year, and I do and I wouldn't be able to do without
- 5:12good friends like Darius And we've had Jimmy Buffett, I've had Florida, Georgia,
- 5:15Line, a little, big town, you name it. I'm forgetting
- 5:20people that Tracy Lawrence last year, Alabama, Randy Owen. I mean,
- 5:27those people have given their time for free to come and help to raise money
- 5:31for better and bigger calls. And uh, I just man, I feel
- 5:36like I want to do the same for other people. On top of that,
- 5:41And I'm influenced this by the fact that your daughter is hanging with you
- 5:44today. How important is it for you to Obviously you want your children to
- 5:49see like you work hard and you're out there creating a living and creating a
- 5:54life, But how how important is it for you artists aside just as a
- 5:58dad, for for your kids to see like, Hey, this this part
- 6:02is nice and it's cool to have a record deal in place shows, but
- 6:05like making a difference is a big deal. Yeah that I think she knows
- 6:13that she's seen me talk to her about the importance of being good for other
- 6:19people. She's really kind too. For all, I talk about her like
- 6:23she's not sitting here, But even when her teachers write up her reports and
- 6:28talk about how she's the one in the class who's kind and looks out for
- 6:31others and takes care of people. I think that character, trait, and
- 6:36quality is something that no matter what you do in your life, whether you're
- 6:40a singer or whether she decides to do whatever she wants to do. No
- 6:46matter what you do or you may be defined as by a profession, that
- 6:49doesn't mean that you can't be defined as like a kind human that takes care
- 6:54of other people. And so that's the first thing that I think that I
- 6:58try to teach her as a as a child and um, and she's been
- 7:01great. She's seen us do a lot of really good things for other kids,
- 7:05UM, and and people that she knows that she's really fortunate to grow
- 7:10up this way. UM, so it's important for us to help those that
- 7:14aren't as fortunate. Uh. Let's jump into the new album just came out,
- 7:17Loose Cannon. What are some of the songs that that fans are gravitating
- 7:24to more than others? Are some that are like you scroll to social media.
- 7:28Yeah, I got a really good response from a lot of people about
- 7:32Um about the record, which is really flattering for me. Um scrolling through
- 7:36social media, it's funny you say that. Uh. The other day I
- 7:40asked some people about like what they were digging on, like what they like,
- 7:45and there's been a lot of really consistent reviews. Um. Just reading
- 7:49right now, it's a lot of people like it don't he Won't You Do,
- 7:53which is kind of a slower, real country song, which is surprising
- 7:57for me. Um. But the ending is getting a lot of credits.
- 8:03Somewhere South with Rum, which was written by Jordan Davis, a really good
- 8:07friend of mine. He sent that to another great golfer. Yeah, good
- 8:09golfer, but man, a lot of them. Hopeless is one that's really
- 8:16good. Hearts and habits on the Boat Again. People like on the Boat
- 8:20Again too, So but no, I've got great reviews and it's really really
- 8:26fulfilling and flattering to know that, because it's really nervous to put out an
- 8:30album that you know, you don't know people are gonna like it or not
- 8:33so and people always judge you based off your last record, like is it
- 8:37gonna be as good? As the last one. So when people told me
- 8:41that they were getting like Barefootblue g Night vibes off this new record, I
- 8:45was like, cool, then we did our job. I'm cool with that
- 8:46because I made a couple of bucks off of Barefootblue Ga Night Zone go Forth.
- 8:52Yeah, I don't even know if it's about the bucks as much as
- 8:54it was about, you know, just getting great momentum from an album that
- 8:58people genuinely like, lived with, they loved it, they identified with it.
- 9:01And that's what you try to do when you make an album, do
- 9:05you when you go in the studio you say that people are getting vibes off
- 9:07of a song that's been massive for your career. That's not a goal though,
- 9:11right, Like, hey, we need to get in the studio and
- 9:13make another Barefootblues Unite or this needs a feeling. Yeah, now, we
- 9:18don't even even reference that as much as it's just about like great songs.
- 9:22Like I was telling someone this earlier, like I wrote an incredible amount of
- 9:26songs that I did not record for my album, and they're good, but
- 9:33they're not as good as the ones I put on my album. So I
- 9:35always will put the better song at the time when you put them all together
- 9:39and you read them out, the best songs win. And I think that
- 9:43is what has helped me in my career throughout all these years is I've really
- 9:48tried to record great songs and they don't always work. Not everyone everyone loves
- 9:52everything, but that's art in general. But if you can consistently just put
- 9:58out a great song and a great lyric, a great message, I think
- 10:01people resonate with that. There's sixteen songs on the new album, which is
- 10:05available everywhere including the iHeart Radio app. Yeah, thank you guys, by
- 10:09the way, But why sixteen? Because I feel like everybody there's artists that
- 10:13are like, here's one hundred and seventeen songs, I'm a new project.
- 10:16And then there's some artists that are like, hey, here's eight, here's
- 10:18ten. Why what? Why sixteen? Yeah? I took the seventeen fulle
- 10:22off? That makes sense? Did you? But do you have a target?
- 10:28Like an odd number? You know? So why not? Do you
- 10:33don't have a goal though? Right? You're like, hey, we're just
- 10:35gonna throw all these songs together and whichever one stick they stick. I don't.
- 10:37I mean, I always have a goal of putting the best album together
- 10:43possible, and I probably had another five or six that I could have put
- 10:46on there. But at some point, too much, you know, too
- 10:48much music's too much music, you know, people just have enough time to
- 10:52like for instance, like, um, the other day I was listening in
- 10:56Morgan Wallen's album is so great obviously and everyone knows, everyone's talking about it
- 10:58and whatever. There's a lot of songs on it, and the other day
- 11:01I heard a song was like I even heard this song yet, and that
- 11:03album has been out for a while, you know, so it's like taking
- 11:05me this long to digest it. And I think people have lives, people
- 11:09have and then less you're Morgan Wallen with like that type of attention span on
- 11:13you. I thought like sixteen was a good and good number where it was
- 11:18more than usual, but not like too much where you know, you got
- 11:22to sit in the car for three days for an extra a few days.
- 11:26So I just thought, hey, I can I can give them more,
- 11:30you know, in another six months or so. Well, that's the thing
- 11:33when it comes to it. People. It feels like EPs are coming more
- 11:35popular now. Old Dominia just put on an EP the other day that kind
- 11:39of let them rest in between an album cycle. But also deluxe editions are
- 11:43a big deal now. So if you got like an extra five song sitting
- 11:46around, boom, we got a deluxe edition. Yeah, man, I'm
- 11:48just again. I'm about putting out good songs. If it's four of them,
- 11:54cool, put out four of them. If it's forty of them,
- 11:56I doubt that you can have forty awesome songs all that once. But if
- 12:01you can put them out, but just make sure it's quality, make sure
- 12:03people are going to dig it, and make sure that it's about the music
- 12:07and not just like trying to put something out there. And I'll tell you
- 12:09there's something versus the last time we talked to you, which you were aunt
- 12:13about your music. I feel like you're in a different headspace career wise.
- 12:16I mean maybe you feel like you're thinking more clear or I don't know,
- 12:20it feels like you're you're really enjoying every step more than ever unless I'm way
- 12:24off, uh no, I mean I guess you're attentive, which is cool.
- 12:31And I don't know when the last time I chatted with you where it
- 12:33may have seemed different. It's probably like a year maybe a year probably year
- 12:37ago. A year ago. It is definitely in a different place in my
- 12:39life. You know, I've just worked. I've gone through this business from
- 12:45the kid that no one knew who he was to people knowing who I was.
- 12:48And then then once you get to be known and you've had a good
- 12:52career, then the rest of your career is about like like maintaining it right.
- 12:58So I've gone through is like a lot of things that a lot of
- 13:01artists like you cannot go through unless you go through a long, extended career.
- 13:07So yeah, I would say I'm for sure fired up to be where
- 13:11I am in my life right now, and I'm grateful more than anything,
- 13:13I think for what I've done. So I'm just trying to be happy man,
- 13:18just make good music and enjoy my family and realize that like this is
- 13:22pretty awesome, pretty awesome life. Last thing I want to ask is the
- 13:26album is out. People are well consuming, digesting however you want to talk
- 13:31about music, they're doing it with your sixteen songs. Do you get to
- 13:35enjoy the work that you've put into these? Are you kind of thinking down
- 13:37the road already, like, Hey, I know there's more songs I got,
- 13:39I know I want to get them out. Are you already thinking in
- 13:43the future. Are you kind of like I'll get to that when I get
- 13:46to that. No, no, no, I'm already to that. I'm
- 13:48already yeah. Yeah, Like I did what I needed to do for this
- 13:52album and get it out in the timeframe that you know, it's a business,
- 13:56so like people, there's all people involved things that we're all trying to
- 14:01work on. But we did it and we put it out there and now
- 14:03people have it and they can listen to it. So I'm now I'm on
- 14:05what's next? Right, Like, I don't just say I'm not sitting around
- 14:09right now going cool. I got some time to just chill. I you
- 14:13only have a window in your life to like be the best and put out
- 14:16the best stuff you can. So I gotta work. I gotta get back
- 14:18to work. Now you swung the club. Now you're watching the ball fly
- 14:22getting ready for the next. Well, it's kind of like with golf.
- 14:24You use that as an analogy. Um, you know, if I went
- 14:28out today and played golf and I shot sixty four, you know, like
- 14:31eight under apart or something like career round. Like I don't think I could
- 14:35just like put my sticks down my clubs and be like, well, I'm
- 14:39good for another year or so, like I because this is what I this
- 14:41is all I've been wanting to do is shoot the best score I've ever shot.
- 14:45Yeah. No, I think like what it makes you do is is
- 14:46like you're like, I want to play tomorrow, you know, I want
- 14:50to Like I can't wait to what's next? Like what am I gonna do
- 14:52tomorrow? And usually what you do next isn't Now you're gonna be as good
- 14:54as what you just did the day before. But it's the chase that like
- 14:58keeps you coming act And that's that's what I'm doing. I love it,
- 15:01Jake, And thanks for stopping by, brother, Yeah man, see you guys,
