Transcript
- 0:04All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:07Monday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:09back at it for the next 6 hours. Appreciate you starting your
- 0:13afternoon here with us. Trent Condon, myself, Kendall,
- 0:15or we will be with you until 2O clock and then off the bench.
- 0:19Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain at that time.
- 0:21Here's what's coming up with Trent and I at the bottom of the
- 0:24hour. The columnist for the Des Moines
- 0:27Register, Hawkeye's columnist Chad Leista Cow will be here
- 0:30year. He was in New Jersey over the
- 0:32weekend and we will talk to Chad, what he saw with his own
- 0:36two eyes about that Hawkeye victory over Rutgers.
- 0:39Nice 10 point comfortable win on Friday night.
- 0:42Lichtakau at the bottom of the hour, Bama, Bob Trenton, I will
- 0:46recap the weekend in college football.
- 0:48We'll do that to kick off our second hour at one O clock.
- 0:51And then Bill Seals previews what lies ahead for Iowa State.
- 0:54They will host Arizona. It's a whiteout 6 O clock kick
- 0:57on Saturday night and Bill Seals will talk about about that,
- 1:00where the Cyclones are four games into the season, etcetera.
- 1:03Maybe some Big 12 stuff as well. And we'll make way for Mr.
- 1:06Monday Night with his pick tonight.
- 1:08Just a classic, potentially classic of a Monday night or
- 1:11Baltimore and Detroit, those two teams.
- 1:15If we can't be in front of your TV, you can keep your radio
- 1:18right here. And we have the game on Des
- 1:20Moines Sports Station, the flagship of the Iowa Sports
- 1:23Radio Network. Coverage starts at six, kick off
- 1:26about 7:15 or thereabouts. How was your weekend, Trent?
- 1:29Pretty good, got a little apple picking in.
- 1:31Other than that, I'm pretty lazy.
- 1:34Uh huh. Did you get the apple picking
- 1:35done in time to see your bears run the cow?
- 1:37Yes, this was Saturday. We went right after soccer, so
- 1:40got that done. Was able to get back and get
- 1:42back for the afternoon window so got that knocked out.
- 1:45Cross that one off the list. Be a good dad, good husband and
- 1:48and do it the wife one before. You knew it.
- 1:49Before you know it, you'll be searching for a Christmas tree.
- 1:52Oh absolutely. Well, no, we got artificial.
- 1:54Yeah. So we're good there we're good
- 1:55there don't have to worry about that.
- 1:57But I'm sure there's gonna be another one before we get to
- 1:59Halloween and some of the pumpkin patch is gonna be there.
- 2:02But for sure good weekend tons of football and boy, I, I don't
- 2:07I, I guess we start with the Hawkeyes Friday have.
- 2:08To it was it was what a start to the game.
- 2:11Obviously region doing what region does.
- 2:14Boy, he's unbelievable. He really and truly.
- 2:16Is unless he's playing the cyclist.
- 2:17Unless he's playing Iowa State, and I don't know if that was
- 2:20just a bad day for him or a really good day for Iowa State
- 2:22game plan. Maybe a little bit of both.
- 2:24And at the end of the first half, I mean, I thought, Oh my
- 2:26God, first of all, what the hell are you doing kicking anywhere
- 2:29near right? And then you're watching the
- 2:32clock, you're watching him. You're trying to is there a
- 2:34pathway get out of bounds, get down, you know, give the give
- 2:37the opportunity to kick a field goal.
- 2:39But obviously the clock ran out before Stevens had a chance to
- 2:42run on and maybe put a three spot on the board.
- 2:45But look at it, great game. Gronowski with his legs is such
- 2:47a different difference maker back there.
- 2:50Missed a couple of throws, but he's his arrow is pointing in
- 2:53the right direction. Starting to see some quarterback
- 2:56play. They're quite honestly haven't
- 2:58seen in a long time right. And you have to feel good about
- 3:00that Now. The good, good news is it was
- 3:03you. You saw it on Friday.
- 3:04The bad news is here come the Hoosiers, right?
- 3:06And we'll get to that at some point because my good God, look
- 3:08out. But so many, so many different
- 3:10pathways you can go. Obviously the Howard Pass and
- 3:12catch was remarkable. I'd love to see that.
- 3:17Love to see Moulton back in the playing field.
- 3:20That was good, mentioned Gronelski with his legs, the
- 3:23the, the adjustments that Parker and his secondary and his
- 3:27defense made in the second-half. Those windows, and I give Kelek
- 3:31Manis credit, man, he was throwing that ball into tight
- 3:33windows. He's a better quarterback than I
- 3:35think he gets credit for when he finished 2440 / 300 yards.
- 3:41But and those windows were tight and it was just a different
- 3:44defense in the second-half. Yeah, Calico Madness has
- 3:48definitely improved throughout his career, but I think the
- 3:50credit needs to go with those wide receivers.
- 3:52No, they're good. They're good dudes.
- 3:55Ian Strong is his. I don't know where he ranks in
- 3:57the pecking ward of the big. 10 number two behind Jeremiah
- 4:00Smith, you can make an argument. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:03I'll listen to that. And if that's Ian Strong, not at
- 4:06100% exactly, I don't want to see that dude at 100%.
- 4:08You're exactly right, because he was incredible.
- 4:12The defensive backs for Iowa in the second-half were playing
- 4:14well. They were playing great, they
- 4:15were right with them. That drive that gave Rutgers a
- 4:18lead 2824, they were right there on 4 different passes and the
- 4:21guys just made plays. And they've thrown in the tight
- 4:23windows and the guys made plays and.
- 4:25That's what happens. You mentioned the game plan in
- 4:29the second-half, and I can't remember Iowa defense getting
- 4:33shredded like that in the first half and then not being able to
- 4:36clamp down. You know, we see that so often.
- 4:38All right, they're going to give up some yards in between the
- 4:4020s. And there was no clamping doubt
- 4:41at all. They did not have an answer or
- 4:43response. It was guessing.
- 4:45Every guess was wrong. It was that they were making.
- 4:47I thought the highlight, well, obviously region, but after you
- 4:50after you started to see that they couldn't cover anybody.
- 4:53I thought the highlight might be the Julian Edelman Cooper to
- 4:56Jean commercial. Did you see that for Denali?
- 4:58The begin is pretty good actually, but I hadn't seen it
- 5:01before, but but yes, all of a sudden the coverage was night
- 5:06and day in that second-half. And and and all of them, not
- 5:10just one of them that tightened up, it was it was all of it was
- 5:13Luttmer who was beaten badly early in the football game.
- 5:16Him coming to life. Yeah, adjustments at the at the
- 5:19half give him credit. You mentioned Dayton Howard, a
- 5:22play that preceded that, a couple of plays when he got
- 5:24held, and I think he was running the same route on that one, on
- 5:28that third down play where he's getting held.
- 5:30The throw was over to the right for it was third down.
- 5:32They weren't going to be off the field and putting it back to
- 5:35Rutgers defensive holding. It was Dayton Howard trying to
- 5:38get up the field. That kid that was playing
- 5:40defense came off the field and where did they target?
- 5:43They went right back to Dayton. Howard went up and made that
- 5:46play. This is the Mark Gronowski we
- 5:49saw Friday night. I thought we were going to get
- 5:50from the get go. We did.
- 5:52And whatever the excuses, whatever the reason, that's not
- 5:55the guy that we saw. This is the guy I anticipated we
- 5:58see shaking off the rust too amped up, whatever it was.
- 6:02This is the guy. He had a couple of drops again,
- 6:06including a big one early. Missed a couple of throws that
- 6:09he he piss him off I'm sure when he watches.
- 6:10Him. Yeah, the Wortworth 1.
- 6:11With one was bad and there was one on the third down and five
- 6:15to the right hash there. Anyways, you missed a couple,
- 6:19but it's going to happen, right? How much?
- 6:21Bonex missed 3 of him yesterday. God, he's bad.
- 6:24Anyways, we'll get to the NFL at some point.
- 6:26But Gronowski was tons better, you know, And the arrows
- 6:29pointing in the right direction. One guy really felt bad for it
- 6:32is we heard leading into the game, Moulton, he's going to go
- 6:35because he has to go, but he probably could use another week
- 6:38and then he had to play a lot more than probably they wanted
- 6:41to. I think he.
- 6:41Had more carries than anybody. Because jazzy on Patterson went
- 6:44down. Now we've talked about Jazz
- 6:46finally getting the opportunity, finally get this is going to be
- 6:49a game where I thought people were going to see him run it 20
- 6:51times and then. Probably that was the game plan
- 6:54going into I would imagine. And then he sprains his ankle
- 6:56and he's going to be and we'll see and we'll get availability
- 6:58tomorrow and we'll hear a little bit of more.
- 7:00But I just, I felt bad for the guy that has stuck around.
- 7:03How many guys would stick around in a a running backroom with
- 7:07this kind of depth that has shown ability?
- 7:08At a minimum, he could go back home to Florida and play for FIU
- 7:11or something like that and probably be a starter.
- 7:13But instead he stuck it out. Here's the opportunity.
- 7:16And then he turns his ankle and just, I really felt bad for him
- 7:20in the moment that that happened.
- 7:21I was a little bit surprised we didn't see more McNeil and we
- 7:25just saw him for the one carry in there.
- 7:27And it was, and it was a successful play of memory.
- 7:29Search it was, but it was just because of Bolton I think now
- 7:32ball security, he almost had one pop out too, as I always.
- 7:35Meant. Maybe that has something to do
- 7:37with it? No, no, Bolton almost fumble
- 7:39that ball when it was when they had the lead.
- 7:42It was 3128. It was the run.
- 7:44I think it was the first run of it.
- 7:45He's coming up. It was like a 10 yard gain, but
- 7:48as he's going down, that ball popped out.
- 7:50Yeah, there's. A good camera angle of it coming
- 7:53out. Excellent point.
- 7:55Excellent point. Well, it's good to see him in
- 7:56there. Nice win on the road.
- 7:58I don't care if it's Rutgers. Rutgers is a better team than
- 8:01the Rutgers we remember back in the day.
- 8:03Shiano's got that team going well.
- 8:05Their defense isn't the greatest in the world, but you know, and
- 8:08it looked like in the first half it was too bad defenses.
- 8:11But Iowa wins and wins comfortably.
- 8:12And at the end of the day, they put one in the win column and
- 8:15get set to face an Indiana team. Oh my good God, get out of their
- 8:20way. This.
- 8:20This team is on a absolute. Roll right now.
- 8:23I mean, is that the biggest national story of the week?
- 8:27Two of them, Texas Tech, Texas. I want to put them in the
- 8:31conversation. Well, let's start with Indiana
- 8:33because it connects here to Iowa.
- 8:34We'll get to get to the Big 12 in Texas Tech, But Indiana, I
- 8:38told you I liked them coming to the week.
- 8:40Yep. I was never a believer in
- 8:41Illinois all offseason. I didn't anticipate that.
- 8:45Though no, they crushed them. The inability of Illinois's
- 8:48offensive line to do anything, that's a problem, and you can
- 8:52get away with that against Duke and Zig.
- 8:54Daddy said as much. Well, they turned it over.
- 8:56That's what he said. We don't turn it over.
- 8:58No, and they didn't, Mendoza. Is absolutely legit, and he
- 9:02should be. If you like to buy futures on
- 9:05Heisman tickets, you gotta get one on him.
- 9:07You think so? I do.
- 9:08I'm not saying he's gonna win it, but he's a guy that shot
- 9:10now. I mean, I look back the
- 9:12preseason. Who's 50 to one?
- 9:13Yeah, he's 5 to 1 now. Really. 12:50 Somewhere in
- 9:17there, yeah, he's a he's a short, short price.
- 9:20And I like Altmeyer. I like both quarterbacks going
- 9:23into that game, but Mendoza was so he was 21 out of 23.
- 9:27Trent. And it's just RPOSI mean it's up
- 9:30and down the field and the running game is excellent.
- 9:32Sarat is one of the best wide receivers you're going to find
- 9:34out there. And this defense?
- 9:36And they were making plays. They were running free.
- 9:39Altmeyer didn't look like he had a clue at times.
- 9:41But it's back to that Illinois offensive line.
- 9:43They were not good enough against Indiana and they will
- 9:47take any little slight. The Hoosiers will sure they
- 9:49will. Cignetti.
- 9:49This is something that he is on that is taking it.
- 9:52The slights that he's gone through in his career and using
- 9:55them and the motivation where. Does he end up?
- 9:58Is this it for him? Is this what is he 63?
- 10:01You know, it's a good question, Trent, He looks like he's late
- 10:0450s, early 60s. So somewhere the does he have
- 10:07one more move in him? Well, let me Google him because
- 10:10that's what he likes people to do, right?
- 10:11Google him. That's right.
- 10:13Kurt Zanetti is 64 years. Old all right, so maybe he
- 10:16doesn't have a lot left. If you're, if you're a here's
- 10:19one, if you're a Florida, if you're an Alabama, Do you mean
- 10:21do you want to hire a guy that's 64?
- 10:24Well, Alabama would make a lot of sense.
- 10:25He was there for, what, four years under Saban?
- 10:27Yeah. He was, yeah, but 64.
- 10:32Fix the program, get you a good 5-6 years maybe, and then figure
- 10:36it out from there. Well, he's.
- 10:38He wins. He sure does.
- 10:40And he's he's bringing a scary football team into Kennick
- 10:43Stadium on on Saturday, 2:30 The kickoff on that one airs down
- 10:47the hall 1040 WHO? So a lot of the lines that
- 10:50started to post on Saturday night had the Hoosiers favored
- 10:53by 6 1/2. I saw both FanDuel and
- 10:55DraftKings I had that Saturday night and then it was up to 7
- 10:591/2 in both of those places pretty quickly.
- 11:02And then with Circa, the sharpest book out there, they
- 11:04posted four, they released four, and they got bludgeoned right
- 11:09away. This is going to be all week
- 11:11long. If you listen to anything in the
- 11:12gambling space, you're going to hear that everybody is going to
- 11:16be on the Hoosiers. The public money is going to be
- 11:18there, and I would anticipate that early money.
- 11:20Do you have? Breakdowns now of of money
- 11:22that's come in on the game. I do they're, you know, these
- 11:25ones are early in the week because there's so few bets.
- 11:29Normally I don't think it's the best time to get a good
- 11:33encompassing look, but I'm going to guess.
- 11:34And there it is, 87% of the money, 75% of the tickets
- 11:38already on the Hoosiers. It is 7 1/2 at circa 7 1/2 at
- 11:42the big books. There are a few sevens in the
- 11:45market. 2 sevens in the market. Has anyone hit 8 or do what?
- 11:48What do you expect this circa did.
- 11:50Yesterday and they got up to 8 1/2, I believe.
- 11:53Yeah, 8 1/2. And then the buyback started at
- 11:55the 8 1/2 number. So then it's been back and forth
- 11:58between 7:00 and 7:00 and 1/2 at Circa.
- 12:00That's probably what you're gonna see throughout the most of
- 12:02the week until we get to Friday, Saturday when the public money
- 12:05really starts to come in. Yeah, fascinating.
- 12:09Certainly scary. A scary, scary thought of what's
- 12:13coming. We'll see.
- 12:14I mean, we've had good teams at Kinnick Stadium in the past,
- 12:16right? And it's gone the Hawks way.
- 12:18We'll see if that's the case this week.
- 12:20I want to get to Texas Tech and Utah because I thought Utah was
- 12:25going into the season. I thought this was a a team that
- 12:28was poised to poised to win a conference.
- 12:30I, I like Texas Tech. I said as much.
- 12:33I didn't like the way their schedule set up for them.
- 12:36That was my my big question when it came to when it came to Texas
- 12:40Tech because seemingly all of their most difficult games were
- 12:44were on the road. They had to go to take on a Utah
- 12:48team, They had to go to Arizona State, they had to go to K
- 12:51state. Now obviously that game doesn't
- 12:53look as daunting as it did at at one point, but they from the
- 12:59jump you could tell where where I thought Utah had the best
- 13:03offensive line in football. That's what we were told pre
- 13:06season. The defensive line for Texas
- 13:09Tech. I don't know how much money they
- 13:10invested in that unit, but money well spent because this is a
- 13:14bunch of dudes. This is a really good football
- 13:17team and they're going to be a pain in the ass.
- 13:20You know, one of the biggest things we need to talk about
- 13:22that offensive line, I just go back to the trace reportal, was
- 13:25Zambrano, their right tackle, who was at Illinois State.
- 13:28Iowa got involved with him right away and they liked him.
- 13:31You know, he'll compete. We'll see if he can be a left
- 13:33tackle and kind of what they ended up with Bryce George, but
- 13:36we'll see. But they didn't see him as a
- 13:38surefire. I wouldn't see him as a surefire
- 13:40starter like this is a no doubter and then he goes to
- 13:42Texas Tech and gets all this money and like, oh boy, if if
- 13:45they're spending for guys that at least for one of them, you.
- 13:48Thought he was fringe. Maybe at that level, yeah.
- 13:50Zaprotos played well and the rest of that offensive line the
- 13:53less the rest of those guys have also clicked.
- 13:56I don't want to fall victim though of the final score in
- 14:00this game because I don't think it's indicative of what it
- 14:03actually it was close for 3/4 it was and I don't want to.
- 14:08But don't forget their starting quarterback got hurt.
- 14:11Morton got hurt. Now Hamlin came in.
- 14:12He was really good. He he was better.
- 14:15My depend, you know, he was good.
- 14:18Morton threw 2 picks of the game and.
- 14:21So does damn fear, by the way, who's maybe you're not quite as
- 14:24good as maybe some of the press clippings would allude.
- 14:26To He can run, yeah, but it's the same thing we said coming
- 14:28into the air. He's a great runner, you know,
- 14:30Questions about the passing. Is Hammond a freshman or a
- 14:33sophomore? I think he's a freshman.
- 14:35He's a freshman. A red shirt freshman.
- 14:37Yeah, OK. Yep.
- 14:40Do they have a controversy though?
- 14:41I mean, we'll see about the injury to Morton.
- 14:46Not expected to miss but all of a sudden.
- 14:49Are they off this? Week they are, and maybe their
- 14:51most difficult game. Left Texas Techs.
- 14:54Might be their next one. At Houston.
- 14:57Yeah, Houston's good. Houston's good.
- 15:00Houston's good and they'll be ready.
- 15:03Willie Fritz, Dude wins. Yeah, Google him too and he wins
- 15:06everywhere. JUCO.
- 15:07Doesn't matter where he's been, he has been a winner every
- 15:09single stop along the way. Just those were the two teams
- 15:13that caught my eye. This.
- 15:14Weekend. Yeah, they did.
- 15:15I just want to maybe temper. I like Texas Tech a lot.
- 15:18I liked him coming there. I had been the Big 12
- 15:20Championship, as you did. However, 3410 I don't think was
- 15:24completely indicative of the way that.
- 15:26Game. No, the game was closed for a
- 15:27while. No 100%.
- 15:28All right, let's spend a couple of minutes.
- 15:30Since Iowa State didn't play, let's let's talk about the NFL
- 15:34in this block. I guess we got to start with
- 15:37your Bears. Now we I watched two weeks ago.
- 15:39I didn't watch a ton of it, but I saw enough of it.
- 15:42Russell Wilson beat the Cowboys. It looked like Russell Wilson in
- 15:45his prime in Seattle because there was no prime at Denver,
- 15:48Pittsburgh or now New York. So he beat the brakes off the
- 15:52Cowboys made a bad play in the game, but numbers wise, he put
- 15:56up huge numbers. So is this Cowboys defense just
- 15:59bad it's or the Bears? Are they they're going in the
- 16:02right direction or is it just maybe a little bit of both?
- 16:05Did you see the the flea flicker?
- 16:06I did on only on on replay. I mean, I think it looked dead
- 16:10when it started. I mean, see 8 yard pass, 8 yard
- 16:15flea flicker. You don't you don't throw the
- 16:16ball backwards that far, right? Right.
- 16:18And it worked. That's how bad this Dallas
- 16:20defense is. I think that's just that shows
- 16:22you there's guys running Jerry. Jones said today they're a
- 16:24playoff team. They expanding.
- 16:28They're going up to 16 in each. Yeah.
- 16:31Playoff team. Worried about Jerry.
- 16:32Come on, Jerry. That's not a playoff team.
- 16:34No, she has with that defense. They are brutal.
- 16:38I thought DAC played well. Did he?
- 16:40Yeah, he was. The two interceptions, one of
- 16:43them was a tip ball, the other one was late and had.
- 16:46A Chuck. So the Bears defense was OK?
- 16:48It was all right. Wasn't great by me.
- 16:50I didn't say, oh, things are fixed or anything like that.
- 16:52But Caleb fixed. No, not fixed.
- 16:55He had a great game against a bad team, a bad defense.
- 16:57That's what he was able to do. But no, that is not anything
- 17:00that I say. All right, everything's good.
- 17:02It's going to be hunky Dory going forward.
- 17:03Now for the Bears. Good win, fun win, got to win.
- 17:06Those are all things. Yes, absolutely still this week
- 17:11now do it again you go to Vegas well, let's do winnable.
- 17:14It's a winnable game before you hit it early by this year get to
- 17:182 and two get a little bit of hope.
- 17:19But if you drop this one in Vegas, who has their own issues
- 17:22spot with Gino, how about? Genti too.
- 17:24Oh absolutely. Look at a couple of the guys
- 17:26went behind him, including offensive line when you get
- 17:31blocked. Bunch of dudes when you're 678
- 17:35guys away for being a good team. You don't need a running back.
- 17:37You don't need a running back. You don't need a running back.
- 17:39I agree with you 100%. We'll, we'll see how that one
- 17:42works out, but boy, oh boy, have to be some questions there.
- 17:45So I watched I, I think one of the best teams in in the AFC, in
- 17:52the Chargers. I didn't see your Bears because
- 17:54watching my Broncos go down in flames again on the last second
- 17:56field goal. Justin Herbert's really good.
- 18:00Justin Herbert is, I know the playoffs aren't there, but you
- 18:04got to get to him and and have a decent team around your
- 18:06supporting cast. I think he does.
- 18:08I think he does. Keenan Allen looked like he hit
- 18:11the mountain of youth. He absolutely did.
- 18:13He looked really good, saw a couple of plays out of a Marion
- 18:16Hampton who'd been a disappointment 2 weeks in,
- 18:18looked like maybe there was a little something there and they
- 18:20used him a whole lot more. No question that they had the
- 18:23first couple of weeks as Naja Harris.
- 18:25Quinton Johnson, who looked like a boss, absolutely is a
- 18:29legitimate WR1. I'll add Mcconkey's, and
- 18:34Mcconkey's terrific. He's going to he's going to do
- 18:36what he always. Does good, solid that defence.
- 18:40They're better. They're better.
- 18:41Yes, the offensive line concern, because I think the I know the
- 18:44Broncos got to, oh, they had to have four or five sacks in the
- 18:48game. What are the stats they had?
- 18:50They had to have team stats. Where's the sacks?
- 18:54Trent Hill, me with the sacks. Sacks. 5.
- 18:57They had five sacks. 5 sacks. Yeah.
- 18:59So that's a concern. Well, that was what going into
- 19:01the game, I thought we'd see the return of what we thought we
- 19:04were going to see out of the Broncos defense after not
- 19:06forcing a pun against the Colts the week before.
- 19:09Even the few shaky moments of Week 1, you know, I thought and
- 19:11they were for the most part back to that level.
- 19:14But Herbert makes place he. Does and Bonex doesn't.
- 19:17Bonex had wide receivers running wide open, couple of them not
- 19:21nobody within 10 yards down the field.
- 19:23Now his he he couldn't set his feet properly and he's got a
- 19:27cannon for an arm. So the 45 yards in the air,
- 19:30whatever had to be that's that's not a problem.
- 19:33But it was there. There was one at the end of the
- 19:34game where he had no excuse and an opportunity to win the
- 19:37football game and couldn't get it done.
- 19:39But but the Chargers are good. The Chargers are good.
- 19:42Feel awful for Naja Harris, the Achilles, you could just tell.
- 19:46You can see it from behind, you know, just roll right up the
- 19:49leg, back of the leg. Soon as you saw that, you know,
- 19:51there goes there goes Najee Harris for the remainder of the
- 19:55season. Nice win for the Brownies, got
- 19:58to give them. Yes, absolutely.
- 20:00Knocking off those Packers making the NFC North a little.
- 20:03Bit more that defense is so good.
- 20:05They really are. They really are.
- 20:08I got to. I got to give something to you.
- 20:11I think you'll like. What is it?
- 20:13Chiefs are in trouble. Chiefs are in trouble.
- 20:17Why? There is nothing.
- 20:21Other than 15. When you don't have playmakers
- 20:25and they don't. They don't.
- 20:26They have one. Who?
- 20:29Well, I I beat out of this skill set, guys.
- 20:32No, they don't. They don't.
- 20:33Not at this point, they don't. Kelsey's old.
- 20:35He is, and he looks old. Kelsey should have retired.
- 20:38He's going to be one of these guys.
- 20:39I think that we're going to look like I stayed a year too long.
- 20:43If Rashe Rice, there's no guarantee that he's Rasheed Rice
- 20:47when he returns. He's missed a lot of.
- 20:49I agree. There's no guarantee that Worthy
- 20:52Worthy is a nice gadget guy, but is he a guy that's going to get
- 20:56you a consistent, you know, 7 catches for 85 yards and a
- 20:59touchdown every week? Well, there's going to be those
- 21:02weeks, he goes. Sure, the only reason I hesitate
- 21:04is look what Mahomes is turning Taekwon Fortin into the.
- 21:07Guy that was cut by the Patriots.
- 21:09A legitimate A legitimate threat.
- 21:12This Mahomes made a couple of plays in the game yesterday.
- 21:15You know what I thought is most important?
- 21:17His most impressive play was it was a combined the worst play
- 21:20I've ever seen him make and then the best play I've.
- 21:22Ever seen him make Yep. The, the, the, the backwards
- 21:26pass and how nobody on the Chiefs realized this is backward
- 21:30because it happened twice. It happened twice in the game.
- 21:32Pacheco got billed out. And then when it was a backwards
- 21:35pass and somehow #58 or know who has for the Giants, he's got the
- 21:39ball instead of just, you know, falling on it.
- 21:41How Mahomes was able to steal that ball away from him and get
- 21:46the ball back and a, at the very least prevent the Giants from
- 21:49being set up at the 10 yard line.
- 21:51What a play, What a play. What are the more interesting
- 21:54parts we hear right away at the beginning?
- 21:55Graham Cano's hurt, yes, And so they tried their punter.
- 21:59He gets the extra. He was awful, yes, and then they
- 22:02put him back out there for a short field goal.
- 22:04But in today's NFL, you got a guy that's close and kicking how
- 22:09you can run them out there. Kicking is so important, I know.
- 22:12And now with the kickoff rule on top of it, it just it takes it
- 22:15to another level. I walked away with Kansas City,
- 22:18even with the win, the first one of the year, more concern going
- 22:21forward than I had been all since.
- 22:22No, I don't think they're a playoff team, Trent.
- 22:24I don't think they're a playoff train.
- 22:26And they get Baltimore this week.
- 22:27Yeah, good luck. OK, I'll give you the short week
- 22:30for Baltimore, but that's going to be a fantastic.
- 22:33We how we got a hell of a game tonight with Baltimore.
- 22:35Can Detroit win this game? Of course, I agree with you.
- 22:38I agree. I think Detroit obviously better
- 22:41than we what we thought they were after they got just taken
- 22:43to the woodshed by the Packers. God, I love this time of year.
- 22:48So much fun. All right, it's coming up on
- 22:491225. Chad Leistakow, I see.
- 22:52Chad Leistakow ran 1/2 marathon over the.
- 22:54Weekend. And won his age group.
- 22:57Great work out of here. How about that?
- 22:59We'll talk to Chad on the other side before we go to break.
- 23:01One more thing I want because I don't want to forget about this.
- 23:04Hats off to a guy who did it for four decades.
- 23:08And what by mean did it all the changes with the Iowa Cubs and
- 23:12the stadium and the floods and everything that the I Cubs have
- 23:16gone through to etcetera, to working behind the scenes to get
- 23:20the funding to build the ballpark, to make it look like
- 23:23the gem that we have here in central Iowa.
- 23:26San Bernardino be calling it a career after over 4 decades as a
- 23:30general manager. Well done.
- 23:32Sam Burnaby, tip of the cap to you my friend.
- 23:35We'll take a time out. We'll come back.
- 23:36We'll talk to Chad Leistekow. Miller and Condon.
- 23:39Underway on a Monday, it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:50I'm Hillary Condon. Welcome back.
- 23:51Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller,
- 23:54wherever listening in the state of Iowa.
- 23:56Grateful that you are. Well, let's talk to the best in
- 23:59his age bracket when it comes to running a half marathon.
- 24:02He's Chad Leistakow. He's burning up the track
- 24:05yesterday. Well done.
- 24:06Chad Leistakow, how are you? Thanks guys, Appreciate it.
- 24:10I'm sore today. Yeah.
- 24:12Day off? Yeah, day off from running.
- 24:14Good. So how did you get into that?
- 24:16Obviously I see in the hall periodically you can tell you're
- 24:19in really good shape. How long you been doing this and
- 24:21what is this? The first time you've run in 1/2
- 24:25marathon? You've been working up your way
- 24:26up to it. Yeah, this is my SO.
- 24:29I ran cross country in high school and long time ago.
- 24:32We won state championship my senior year as a team, 1992.
- 24:37So it's been a long time. So you can do the math.
- 24:39I'm in the 50 to 54 age group now, so it's easier to win.
- 24:43But but yeah, I just kind of got back into it in the last couple
- 24:46of years. My son as a sophomore at 8:00
- 24:49AM, he's on the varsity team, and my daughter is just getting
- 24:52into it and she's in 7th grade. So we've all kind of gotten into
- 24:55it as a family. So yeah, I just kind of got the,
- 24:59you know, been ramping it up a little bit.
- 25:00Thought I'd try the half and I did all right.
- 25:03I was happy with. That so is the goal then 26.2 at
- 25:06some point. You know what, like yesterday
- 25:09was the longest round of my life I've ever run that far.
- 25:12So we're going to go baby steps on that one.
- 25:14And I, I think another half though, I think because I
- 25:17stomped up, yeah, quite a bit in the end.
- 25:19So I would like to run a little bit better.
- 25:21Well, well done. Yes.
- 25:22Well, Speaking of baby steps, we've seen some baby steps
- 25:25forward out of Mark Garnowski at the quarterback spot.
- 25:28Let's start at the top and Gronowski missed a couple, but
- 25:31overall, a very solid game doing it with his legs.
- 25:35One thing jumped out, listen to Kirk in the postgame press
- 25:37conference, though, is maybe too many carries for it.
- 25:40No, no, no, this guy, this is his strength running the
- 25:43football. What do you see from the
- 25:44quarterback? And hope going forward that this
- 25:46is going to continue to build on what we saw Friday night.
- 25:50Well, I know we'll get into the Indiana match up and that's
- 25:52going to be a tougher animal here as we go.
- 25:54But just in terms of, you know, how this offense has looked the
- 25:58last couple weeks, I mean, UMass, you just had to roll your
- 26:00eyes and just say, you know, throw whatever they wanted to
- 26:04out there. Let's see if he can throw deep
- 26:06against Rutgers or throw, you know, intermediate.
- 26:09And he really did a pretty good job with that.
- 26:11I mean, honestly, the first play of the game with a little under
- 26:13thrown to Seth Anderson, but I still thought he should have
- 26:16caught it or at least got API flag.
- 26:18And then the second deep shot to Sam Phillips was like right on
- 26:21the money and he just dropped it.
- 26:23I mean that I thought Gronowski, I mean that was just kind of the
- 26:26sum up of the day is they kept trying it and then they hit it
- 26:29late with Dayton Howard. That was the longest pass play
- 26:32of the season. I liked that they liked the
- 26:35Lester's going back at it. I thought that was what was
- 26:37missing against I was it not? I would say was giving that, but
- 26:42I thought you could have tested Iowa State a little bit deeper
- 26:45with their safety play. But anyway, that's hindsight.
- 26:48But I think he's just kind of growing into the position going
- 26:51into the role 4 weeks and that's about the length of spring ball.
- 26:54Feel like that's he's kind of made-up for that now.
- 26:57And now you sort of get to see the Granowski, you know that we
- 27:00thought we were going to be watching.
- 27:02And I think it's encouraging. Finally, he has.
- 27:04He's got a little moxie. He's got a little, you know,
- 27:06he's got a little flare out there holding his ear to the
- 27:08crowd. I.
- 27:10Think that's, I think it's, I think it's, it gets your offense
- 27:13to rally right around you. You know, I think that's that's
- 27:15a really big deal. Got to have confidence in the
- 27:17quarterback position. Absolutely.
- 27:19Kamari Moulton, I'm not sure that it was going to plan that
- 27:22he was going to lead the team in carries.
- 27:24Obviously the Patterson injury probably was the the 100% the
- 27:28reason behind that. But what any update on
- 27:31Patterson? What do you expect expecting to
- 27:33hear tomorrow, Chad? I haven't seen it.
- 27:36I don't think they've come out with the depth chart yet, unless
- 27:38I just missed it in the last few minutes, but it looked like a
- 27:42pretty decent ankle sprain to me.
- 27:45So my guess would be that, you know, he might be on the shelf
- 27:49this week to try to get him to the bye week.
- 27:53But I think that's OK Moulton was, you know, Moulton's our
- 27:56best running back. And I thought he looked pretty
- 27:58good. He maybe just like, was a little
- 28:00excited too much. I felt like he tripped over his
- 28:02own feet a little bit, had some nice holes.
- 28:05But he's the best back. So I think he gives him the best
- 28:07chance to win on Saturday. And and certainly Nathan McNeil
- 28:11is, would be my #2 if it was my pick because he's just got,
- 28:15every time we've seen him, he's got something.
- 28:17He got one carry the other day, made 10 yards out of it and got
- 28:20a flag, a face mask flag. So really 23.
- 28:23And so that would be about 1-2 punch on Saturday, but they
- 28:28really don't have that much after that.
- 28:29I mean, Terrell Washington junior has been a little bit of
- 28:31a disappointment running the ball.
- 28:32So he does give you something out of the in the past game.
- 28:35But I think it's probably Moulton's week this week and
- 28:39Granowski's of course, with the with the running.
- 28:41We look over at the defense and boy, that first half was rough.
- 28:45Even in the second-half as they start to apply a lot more
- 28:47pressure, bringing a lot more blitz packages, calling Manas,
- 28:51he was making throws all over the place.
- 28:53The defensive backfield I thought played a lot better.
- 28:55Even the scoring Dr. that Rutgers had in the second-half,
- 28:58guys were right there. What did you see out of the
- 29:00growth there? And I also thought, Speaking of
- 29:01that defensive backfield, Jalen Watson was in and that one of
- 29:05those final drives of the ball game in for Deshaun Lee.
- 29:08I thought that was a little bit eye opening.
- 29:11Yeah, let me start with Watson because you know, he's obviously
- 29:14the next man. He's a #3 corner, so he's next
- 29:16man in after Deshaun Lee and my I haven't you know, we didn't
- 29:20get to talk to we don't get to talk to coordinators after the
- 29:22game. And but my guess is if if we
- 29:26talk to Phil Parker this week, for example, and he might well,
- 29:31whether he tells you or not, I think what happened there is
- 29:35records was kind of more in a past first situation in the last
- 29:38two drives. And I think Watson's probably
- 29:41your better cover corner over Lee, but I think Lee is a lot
- 29:44better in run defense. And so when you know they're not
- 29:46going to throw, we're not going to run.
- 29:48I think that's my guess just based on what I know.
- 29:52So I don't think like necessarily like a benching is
- 29:54coming or anything like that. And I didn't really see them
- 29:57test Watson, but I do think he's got I mean, he's right there.
- 30:01He's just young. So I would guess Deshaun Lee
- 30:04would be the first guy out there on Saturday.
- 30:08But but Watson ready to go, go. Parker's usually, you know,
- 30:11he'll pull you if you're not having a good game.
- 30:14And then as far as the rest of the defense goes, yeah, it was
- 30:17it was just a real incrementally increased pressure.
- 30:24I think on Kelly Mass, I wrote my CVR Monday that posted was I
- 30:28think he just continued to get hit.
- 30:29I thought Brian Allen hit him really hard on that 4th.
- 30:32Dr. Ethan Hurt hit a couple plays later, hit him hard on one
- 30:35of those best plays where, you know, doesn't show up in the box
- 30:38score. But I think he started to take
- 30:39some hits and then I think he got a little quicker jittery and
- 30:44just, you know, if you get that that quarterback off rhythm and
- 30:46helps. And I think that's what
- 30:47happened. What did you think of Calic
- 30:49Manus's play from what you've seen when you saw him at
- 30:51Minnesota? The progression he's made.
- 30:53I mean, he had some tight windows in the second-half,
- 30:55Chad, and I was relatively impressed by him.
- 30:58How about you? Yeah, it really was especially,
- 31:02especially early, I mean, he has I think 13 of his 1st 16 and and
- 31:07then he, you know, he finished about less than 50% in his last
- 31:1025 passes. So, so that like I said, the
- 31:13pressure I think did get to him. But yeah, I was impressed, but
- 31:16more so I was impressed with the receivers.
- 31:17I didn't really understand how good he was.
- 31:21Now I do after seeing him in person.
- 31:24He was tough. And like Trent just said, like
- 31:26they were making some really tough catches on that, that 4th
- 31:29touchdown Dr. the only one they so they scored 21 on the 1st 3
- 31:32drives. They scored seven in the last 8
- 31:34drives. And the only, the only scoring
- 31:37drive there was I was like tight coverage constantly.
- 31:40Like one guy caught one with his knees.
- 31:43It was pretty impressive actually, those receivers.
- 31:45So and Indiana's going to have the same thing it's going to be
- 31:48except a little bit better. So it's going to be a tough
- 31:50challenge this week looking ahead.
- 31:51Before we get to that, just one more on records.
- 31:53What? What's a game day environment
- 31:55like at Rutgers? It was cool.
- 31:58You know, the Rutgers fans are pretty passionate.
- 32:02I mean, you'd kind of be surprised by that.
- 32:03I was maybe, but I mean, it was like, it was like a carnival on
- 32:07black outside. It was, it was a real big party.
- 32:09I mean, it was, I wouldn't say it was like 100% full even
- 32:12though it was a sellout, but it was good.
- 32:15But I think that, you know, it's, it's also a little bit
- 32:17fair weather also like the traffic I think coming in was
- 32:20pretty bad. And you know, it reminds me of
- 32:23Maryland a lot. Like if you're winning, they'll
- 32:26come out, but if you're losing, you know, they got other things
- 32:28to do. So yeah, so but I like, you
- 32:32know, it's like a 50 some thousand seat stadium.
- 32:34I'm guessing that's the smallest in the big 10.
- 32:36I haven't really like compared, but it's got to be right I would
- 32:39think. Northwestern's new one will be
- 32:41smaller. But but yeah, it was all right.
- 32:48You know, it was actually my first time out there since 16.
- 32:51I missed the 22 game out there. So yeah, it's been a while.
- 32:54Drew Stevens, He makes a field goal, misses another, talked
- 33:00about snapping the Boston College transfers, the guy
- 33:03that's been doing the extra points And, you know, going back
- 33:05to the UMass game, there are a couple of low snaps in that one.
- 33:08What's going on now? And it's unfortunate, but I'm
- 33:11sure I'm not alone. My mind goes back to the end of
- 33:13the year 2 years ago. Didn't get the opportunity to
- 33:16kick the game winner against Nebraska, then didn't get to
- 33:18kick against Michigan or Tennessee because they didn't
- 33:20get in scoring rage. Neither of those games but Drew
- 33:23Stevens. I guess there's always that
- 33:24concern, boy, because we saw the meltdown before.
- 33:27When it goes bad, it could go really bad.
- 33:30Yeah, at this point, I'm not too concerned with it.
- 33:32I think it was just, I don't know, you know, I'd love to talk
- 33:35to him, of course, you know, after every game.
- 33:37And he's he's a real open book. The one he missed against UMass,
- 33:43he was talking about, you know, he was, he had adjusted his
- 33:46kickoff style and he thought he just kind of didn't dial it back
- 33:51on like that, that other mess he had.
- 33:54And then and that's why I don't know what happened because he
- 33:56just missed it so badly. Like it wasn't even close.
- 34:00And that's just very unlike him. And in warmups, he looked great.
- 34:04Like, I mean, I don't think anything is awfully with him and
- 34:07maybe just the snap operation hasn't been perfect.
- 34:10Maybe he's a little thrown off with that.
- 34:12So hopefully for Iowa, they get that kind of dialed in here on
- 34:16this week. But I thought the snaps look
- 34:17good the other day. I mean, I watched him.
- 34:18I know it's kind of crazy, but kind of looked at him.
- 34:21I thought the snaps look pretty good today.
- 34:23Is Fernando Mendoza and I always got a bunch of really good
- 34:26quarterbacks that they'll play against coming up.
- 34:28Might Mendoza be the best of the bunch, Chad?
- 34:32Oh man, yeah, maybe, yeah, because, I mean, everyone was
- 34:34staying aller for the I mean, I've never been like overly
- 34:39impressed with it. And and so, yeah, I think maybe
- 34:42and I do think Kelly act Mass was a good.
- 34:45He was good. You know, a good warm up for
- 34:47that because I thought he was pretty good, pretty accurate and
- 34:50on time and so. But yeah, this is in that
- 34:54Illinois game from Charlotte airport.
- 34:58I was waiting for my flight was that was impressive.
- 35:03That's an impressive looking Indiana team.
- 35:05I think they're second in the country in offense and 3rd in
- 35:08defense or vice versa in that total.
- 35:11So and they played a really good, they played a top ten
- 35:13teams. So it's not like it's all
- 35:15cupcakes. So yeah, it's impressive.
- 35:17It's no wonder the lines move so dramatically.
- 35:19For Indiana. Final thing for me, Chad, Iowa,
- 35:23one thing we talked about a lot in the offseason this year with
- 35:25this schedule, they're going to have to score points to win some
- 35:28games and they did it Friday night against Rutgers.
- 35:30It was a game they had to score and they did it.
- 35:31How many points does Iowa have to score Saturday afternoon to
- 35:35beat the Hoosiers? Yeah.
- 35:37I mean, I think you got to probably put that number close
- 35:39to 30 because yeah, yeah, Cignetti is going to find their
- 35:44weaknesses. That's the linebacker and the
- 35:47second quarter, and he's going to go after those sides.
- 35:50He's going to pick at it just like Rutgers.
- 35:52I mean, Rutgers did the same thing with probably slightly
- 35:56less talent than Indiana has an offense, and then Indiana has a
- 35:59much better defense and Indiana can run the ball, which Rutgers
- 36:02couldn't do. So it's a tough challenge, I
- 36:04would say. I mean, you're going to have to
- 36:06probably win like 30 to 27 type of game.
- 36:08I'm guessing. I don't.
- 36:10But I think, you know, I think they have kind of woken.
- 36:13I wrote that after the Iowa State game.
- 36:15They can't like try to win these games like 1310 against Penn
- 36:19State, Oregon, Indiana. You got to open it up and you
- 36:23got to try to win these games and not just try to feel
- 36:25positioned way that these wins. And I think they're getting more
- 36:28confidence in doing that. By the way, I had no idea about
- 36:33the Shiano Kirk Ference ties and how that story, great story last
- 36:36week. It really was.
- 36:38I mean, how no one was able to pick up on that over the years
- 36:41because it's not the first time they've played faced off against
- 36:44each other. That was a really good nugget,
- 36:46Chad, and it was surprised it hadn't seen the light of day
- 36:49until you wrote about it. Yeah.
- 36:51So, yeah, for those who didn't know, Shianna was very high on
- 36:55Ference's list. I wasn't able to confirm if he
- 36:57was like the number one choice, but he was.
- 36:59But I do know that Shianna was seriously considering it.
- 37:02And then the Miami of Florida, BC job opened up in 99 and
- 37:06Shianna took that and then Norm Parker came to Iowa.
- 37:08The rest is history. And so, yeah, and unfortunately,
- 37:12neither coach would talk about it.
- 37:14I really, I pushed for it. They you know, I would say this
- 37:18that Ference kind of acknowledged that it was
- 37:21accurate and everything, but it just didn't want to, you know, I
- 37:24understand like you don't want to give the insinuation that
- 37:26someone else and not Norm Parker was the number one choice.
- 37:29And I don't know that he was, but but Shianna was definitely
- 37:32running because he got fired by the Bears or wants to have got
- 37:35fired by the Bears. And so he was available and
- 37:38parents knew him from the NFL. So it's really interesting.
- 37:42I've always respected each other and so I was glad I could kind
- 37:44of make that connect and I just wish they would have talked
- 37:47about it, but maybe after you retired.
- 37:48Yeah, that or maybe media days. But you're right.
- 37:51You don't want to show Norm Parker in a bad light.
- 37:52But great scoop. Great scoop.
- 37:54I was born away that that hadn't been brought to light by the
- 37:58Jack. Congrats on the half marathon.
- 38:00Thanks for jumping on with Trent and I.
- 38:01We appreciate it. We'll hear you on Wednesday
- 38:04night. Hawk Central six to seven.
- 38:06Thank you, Chad Leisto. Appreciate it.
- 38:08You bet you guys. Thanks.
- 38:09Yeah, good to talk to you, Chad Liceko on the Hawks beating
- 38:12Rutgers and what lies ahead against the Hoosiers.
- 38:14Brett Mcburk Mcmurphy has his updated bowl projections
- 38:21pinstripe for Iowa. The Hawkeyes are heading back to
- 38:24to. Take on the Yankee Stadium to
- 38:27take on who? Syracuse.
- 38:30Syracuse after they # Klepsum, good God.
- 38:35And then Iowa State. Is Tex Tech the best thing in
- 38:40the Big 12? Right now.
- 38:41Right now. Clones are going to the Alamo
- 38:44Bowl. They are, aren't they?
- 38:46Yes. Who do?
- 38:46They play in the Alamo Bowl. Same uniform US.
- 38:50SC yes, OK. Would you take that right now?
- 38:56I don't think there's a Cyclone fan in the world that would
- 38:57they. Yeah, boy, they had a lot of fun
- 39:00in San Antonio. You're not signing up for San
- 39:02Antonio. Right.
- 39:03Did they watch TV on Saturday? Maybe they just watched the 1st
- 39:063/4. Maybe.
- 39:09OK, All right, I'll give it to you.
- 39:10Miller and Con did back the wrap up hour number one.
- 39:13It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network flagship at Des Moines
- 39:16Sports Station One O 6.3 KXNO. I'm Miller Condon.
- 39:26Welcome back. Final minute here of the first
- 39:28hour of the program. A little breaking news.
- 39:30Bruce Pearl stepping down, effective immediately.
- 39:34His son Stevens. Taking over.
- 39:35That's right. You run out the clock.
- 39:37This is the old Oh Ryan thing that he did for Greg Garden.
- 39:42Absolutely. We've seen this.
- 39:44Well, this is how Lincoln Riley got the job at Oklahoma.
- 39:46That's right, Stoops did. The same thing happens often in
- 39:49college athletics. What do you know about Steven
- 39:51Pearl? Nothing.
- 39:53Nothing. So that makes.
- 39:54Sense Bruce's kid. Yeah, well, of course.
- 39:56Nailed it. Yeah, I was ready for that one.
- 39:58So Bruce Pearl is 65, and the rumors he's stepping down
- 40:02because he's gonna enter the political theater.
- 40:04Yes. At 65.
- 40:06So this has been out here now for a couple of weeks.
- 40:08That's when I first heard it and I just rolled my eyes at it.
- 40:10And whenever I get on that garbage app and I said, well,
- 40:16that's stupid and here we are and it's reality.
- 40:18So we'll see if the reality is that he is going to run for
- 40:21either Senate, governor, There's both of those have been out
- 40:23there. 65 You want to get into the political ring?
- 40:26Hey, there's some dirty money out there, might as well go get
- 40:28it. There's dirty money in college
- 40:30sports, too. He's been a part of it for a
- 40:32long time. No way.
- 40:33Tell me all about it. All right, Hour 2 is coming up
- 40:35next. Miller and Condon, glad you're
- 40:37with us. Bama, Bob, Trent and I will go
- 40:40round college football. How about my Oscars?
