Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: No doubt about it. And me and news from right
- 0:02Speaker 1: here in Las Vegas not long ago, but before we
- 0:05Speaker 1: came up here on set fancy Gold Nights, could be
- 0:09Speaker 1: very happy. Jack Eichel eight more years here in Vegas,
- 0:13Speaker 1: thirteen and a half million bucks per year per our
- 0:18Speaker 1: friend Darren Dreger. But the two biggest headlines contract wise,
- 0:22Speaker 1: one of course the Minnesota Wild and career Caprice off
- 0:25Speaker 1: they break the banking record setting NHL contract eight years,
- 0:30Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty six billion, most ever, most ever
- 0:33Speaker 1: per year at seventeen million dollars a year, So we
- 0:37Speaker 1: had the biggest contract ever and then just days later,
- 0:40Speaker 1: arguably the biggest discount in all of sports. Connor McDavid
- 0:45Speaker 1: signed a two year extension twelve point five million dollars
- 0:48Speaker 1: a year, So he doesn't get a lot of term
- 0:50Speaker 1: there for Edmonton, but he wants to run it back.
- 0:53Speaker 1: He said he wanted to win there. But it feels
- 0:55Speaker 1: like Gretz right now. The pressure is on that Edmonton
- 0:59Speaker 1: team for the next couple of years to surround him
- 1:02Speaker 1: with pieces so they can get this dumb.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no question. First of all, we all know
- 1:06Speaker 2: he's worth way more than that. He gave a home discount.
- 1:08Speaker 2: He wants to win. There you can utilize some of
- 1:11Speaker 2: that assets and that money to get other players to
- 1:14Speaker 2: make their team better. It doesn't do him any good
- 1:17Speaker 2: to take all the money he can take at the
- 1:19Speaker 2: maximum rate and not be able to build a team
- 1:21Speaker 2: around him. But I think that Edmonton is going to
- 1:23Speaker 2: be a surprise team this year. I think they're a
- 1:25Speaker 2: better team this year than they were last year. I
- 1:27Speaker 2: think they're younger, they're faster, and they got two of
- 1:30Speaker 2: the best players in the game. So, you know, good
- 1:32Speaker 2: for him, good for the city of Edmonton, and I
- 1:35Speaker 2: expect Govermington have a wonderful year.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I mean, that's charity work right there, that he's doing that.
- 1:39Speaker 3: He should be getting a cut of the fifty to
- 1:41Speaker 3: fifty at that, you know, all of a sudden, that
- 1:45Speaker 3: makes the Darnell contract not look as bad the Bouchard
- 1:47Speaker 3: where he had to get paid ten and a half.
- 1:49Speaker 3: And obviously they end up linking in a Wallman so
- 1:51Speaker 3: they get a little bit more familiarity in that locker
- 1:54Speaker 3: room at Colm as well, which I think that's another
- 1:56Speaker 3: part of doing the fact that he's at four million ware,
- 1:59Speaker 3: he's an incredible two way defenseman. So it's nice that
- 2:02Speaker 3: he's given that team the luxury in order to compete now,
- 2:04Speaker 3: and in order to compete with these other teams, you know,
- 2:07Speaker 3: you have to bend at some point, and I think
- 2:09Speaker 3: he's done an incredible job of giving them an opportunity
- 2:12Speaker 3: to win now.
- 2:12Speaker 4: You know, you start looking at these contracts, these signings.
- 2:15Speaker 4: To me, it's just a great sign where the league
- 2:18Speaker 4: is at right now. We used to start sweating around
- 2:21Speaker 4: eleven twelve million dollar contracts. I think GMS now is like, okay,
- 2:25Speaker 4: we got to sign good players for ten to eleven
- 2:28Speaker 4: twelve million. The top guys going to make sixteen seventeen
- 2:31Speaker 4: million dollars. So I'm just happy that the league is,
- 2:34Speaker 4: you know, trending in the right direction. They're doing a
- 2:36Speaker 4: great job of you know, optimizing everything that comes into
- 2:40Speaker 4: the sport right now, and then obviously the players are
- 2:43Speaker 4: benefiting from that. So a couple of surprising numbers for sure,
- 2:48Speaker 4: over the last couple of weeks. But the thing I
- 2:51Speaker 4: take away though is still that we're we're at with
- 2:54Speaker 4: the game right now and the league itself.
- 2:56Speaker 5: And I thought it was smart for McDavid to wait
- 2:57Speaker 5: for capriceof to sign because now he can sign it
- 2:59Speaker 5: a discount and he looks great to the fans at
- 3:02Speaker 5: Edmonton coming in at twelve and a half million dollars
- 3:04Speaker 5: versus Caprice Soft seventeen. I know people are up in
- 3:07Speaker 5: arms saying the deals are going towards seventeen eighteen nineteen.
- 3:11Speaker 5: I think about like Bobrovski when he signed and he's
- 3:13Speaker 5: made ten million dollars a year, we all thought, oh,
- 3:15Speaker 5: he's going to make ten million dollars a year. No,
- 3:17Speaker 5: he's a bit of an outlier. And I think with
- 3:19Speaker 5: Caprice Soft dealing it's a little bit different because they've
- 3:21Speaker 5: been trying to get renovations done in the arena the
- 3:23Speaker 5: last couple of years. They want to get some unisful money.
- 3:26Speaker 5: So what better way to show the local government that
- 3:28Speaker 5: you're fully invested by keeping your top talent and showing
- 3:31Speaker 5: the local government there that you're willing to do whatever
- 3:32Speaker 5: you can to make sure the minister weill the top
- 3:34Speaker 5: team the National Hockey League and.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Back to the Oilers. I mean, you get to spend
- 3:37Speaker 1: that money specifically, you would think they'd have to look
- 3:39Speaker 1: maybe in goal to booster bolster things there. But all right,
- 3:42Speaker 1: let's say it's a three year deal essentially, because he's
- 3:44Speaker 1: on the books. This year could be too if you
- 3:47Speaker 1: feel like maybe you have to trade him going finally year,
- 3:49Speaker 1: if you're uncertain about him staying. Do you think they
- 3:53Speaker 1: get a Cup with Connor McDavid the Edmonton Oilers.
- 3:57Speaker 3: As a betting man, I'd say yes, and I hope
- 4:00Speaker 3: that he brings one home. And then at that point,
- 4:02Speaker 3: I think that nobody's going to hold anything against him,
- 4:04Speaker 3: even if he doesn't. At this point, I don't think
- 4:06Speaker 3: they're holding anything there. He's given them the opportunity. But
- 4:09Speaker 3: if I'm a betting man, I would say in the
- 4:10Speaker 3: next two years they bring one up to Canada for
- 4:12Speaker 3: the first time in over thirty years.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree. I think they're a much better team
- 4:16Speaker 2: this year than last year. I think, as I said, younger,
- 4:18Speaker 2: they're faster, and I like their goaltending. You know, I
- 4:22Speaker 2: think the goalie is not the big issue. I would
- 4:25Speaker 2: have played him in Game five last year. We talked
- 4:28Speaker 2: about this. In Game four it was three, not that
- 4:31Speaker 2: after the first period, it could have been seven to
- 4:33Speaker 2: them for Florida. He was the best player. And then
- 4:35Speaker 2: he didn't play in Game five, which I'm still kind
- 4:37Speaker 2: of trying to figure out why he didn't. But I
- 4:40Speaker 2: think he's a goaltender that can win big games for them.
- 4:44Speaker 2: And like I said, when you got the best player
- 4:46Speaker 2: in the game, he always got a chance to win,
- 4:48Speaker 2: right And now he's taken all the pressure off of
- 4:50Speaker 2: himself and the fans of the city. He can go
- 4:53Speaker 2: out and play and just concentrate. I'm trying to bring
- 4:55Speaker 2: a Stanley Cup. And don't forget he's got drive Citle too,
- 4:58Speaker 2: who happens to be a pretty good hockey player.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And it's you know, a lot of people are comparing
- 5:02Speaker 3: that in the Caprisoft situation, where I don't think that
- 5:04Speaker 3: Connor has the luxury of where they got the Boldies
- 5:06Speaker 3: all of a sudden making eight million, where that's a
- 5:08Speaker 3: forty goal guy, forty assist guy, you know, the Fabers
- 5:11Speaker 3: who are under a very healthy contract. For me, the
- 5:14Speaker 3: big thing in Edmonton right now is getting a Hyman
- 5:17Speaker 3: back to where he was a few years ago. A
- 5:19Speaker 3: devastating injury and a devastating loss for them going into
- 5:22Speaker 3: that finals, especially against such a loaded Florida team. So
- 5:25Speaker 3: if they can get him playing at the bargain that
- 5:27Speaker 3: he's at to where he was a few years ago
- 5:29Speaker 3: in that fifty goal season. That to me is going
- 5:31Speaker 3: to be a big underliar and also maybe where they
- 5:35Speaker 3: don't have to necessarily address how did you pronounce that
- 5:37Speaker 3: word underliar?
- 5:38Speaker 1: Bargain a bargain.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And you know, injuries they're part of it. Look at Florida,
- 5:44Speaker 2: they get two of the best players in the game
- 5:46Speaker 2: that are not going to start, and we don't know
- 5:48Speaker 2: when barkav will be back, and looks like Chuck won't
- 5:50Speaker 2: be back to December or January. That's unfortunately part of
- 5:54Speaker 2: our game. These guys are so big and fast and physical.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Now you never know when one of your best players
- 5:59Speaker 2: is going to get.
- 6:00Speaker 3: And as much as we want to talk about Edmonton,
- 6:01Speaker 3: there's a few other teams in the West that are
- 6:03Speaker 3: are very loaded, this one being one of them, especially
- 6:06Speaker 3: with the big move they made this offseason. Colorado's not
- 6:09Speaker 3: going anywhere. And you know, is Dallas still that team
- 6:12Speaker 3: that we think they are? And every year we seem
- 6:14Speaker 3: to push the Chips on, So it's it's going to
- 6:16Speaker 3: be a grind to get out of the West. And
- 6:18Speaker 3: Edmonton's got their hands.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, And how about Winnipeg, We don't even really talk
- 6:21Speaker 2: about that. They were one of the best teams in
- 6:23Speaker 2: hockey last year and they got one of the best
- 6:24Speaker 2: goalies in hockey, So Winnipeg don't count Demo. They're going
- 6:27Speaker 2: to be a tough out this year too.
- 6:28Speaker 5: And we signed Kyle Connor too.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Yep, that's right, another great agent off the market, potential
- 6:32Speaker 1: free agent. Anyway, they were the President Trophy winners last year.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Not the only contracts though.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Oh money, money, Okay, money, somebody's money.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And then right after that, yeah, boy said.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Show me the money.
- 6:50Speaker 1: They didn't put that up when you signed.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no money left for us arms for the poor.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Knowing you guys, I don't think we need to take
- 7:00Speaker 2: a hat.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I'm going to be working at the Spearmid Rhino and
- 7:02Speaker 3: no time makes a lot, guys,
