- 0:00Speaker 1: Mark Vandermere, played by play voice of the Houston Texans
- 0:02for joining us there, and he said he loved ambrosia,
- 0:04so we throw back with a roll back here with
- 0:07a little more ambrosia here with you're the only woman there.
- 0:11So yeah, So going to that tomorrow night, so we'll
- 0:17see that. Somebody mentioned on the text line he said
- 0:20Journey nineteen eighty three. Brian Adams was the opening act.
- 0:23I still left the T shirt. It's a little snug
- 0:25these days. I sold those T shirts that went on
- 0:29the on the road with Journey. We did City Park
- 0:34Stadium in New Orleans because they couldn't come to an
- 0:36agreement with the Superdome, so it was outdoor venue on
- 0:38the fourth of July pouring rain. But we did that Albuquerque,
- 0:43New Mexico, Dallas, Houston, Norman, Oklahoma, which a daw Kansas,
- 0:51Vegas for three nights at the Aladdin Theater, Let's see,
- 0:58and then up into the Pacific northwest to Poka Tella, Idaho,
- 1:04and Boise, Idaho. When we were in Pocatello, Brian Adams
- 1:09Uh was the lead act and he was a real
- 1:12he was just getting started and he was a real
- 1:14down to earth guy. This is how down to earth
- 1:16Brian Adams was. When we flew from New Orleans to Dallas,
- 1:20Me and the the other three guys that I worked
- 1:22with on my particular crew with this with the T
- 1:25shirt vending thing working for the band. Uh, Brian Adams
- 1:30flew with us on Southwest Airlines. This is you know,
- 1:34he became a mega rock star, but he was just
- 1:37starting out then. That was when his first album and
- 1:39cuts like an Ikea and all that. And he was
- 1:41sitting on the sitting on the plane with us and
- 1:43just regular guy chatting with us. By the time we
- 1:46got to Pokatella, Idaho, Uh, he had seen a few
- 1:49things and and uh was pretty pretty loose with his
- 1:55conversation to the extent that he got up on stage
- 1:59opening up for Journey and what was then called the
- 2:02Mini Dome's It's one of those old fashioned older dome stadiums.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It was concrete.
- 2:07Speaker 1: It looks like an airplane hangar seats like fifteen thousand,
- 2:13and they would hang the goal post for the football
- 2:15team Idaho State plays at home football games there. They'd
- 2:18hang up from cables from the season the ceiling. There
- 2:21was no bottom bar that went up to the crossbar
- 2:24and it would just hang from the ceiling like that.
- 2:27We saw that at both ends. I always remember that.
- 2:29And it was called the Mini Dome back then. It's
- 2:31got a corporate name on it now. But he was
- 2:33up there and he gets on stage. He goes, Poka,
- 2:34tell Idah, how about you spud Butts? Hey, spud Butt
- 2:39And people were kind of like, kind of like is
- 2:42he kidding or what? But yeah, Brian Adams was the
- 2:47opening act. So there you go. So anyway, that was
- 2:56some memories there, and like I said, we're going to
- 2:58see and let's hear some more from long words. Basketball
- 3:02coach Rodney Terry, who's asked about a couple of guys,
- 3:06including Jason Kent, is another guy that they're pretty excited
- 3:10about in his development.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yes, Ed, I'll tell you what you know. Jason Kent.
- 3:16You know we've known his dad a long time. Dad
- 3:18was a.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Was was a coach here at Houston Jellison at one time.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Mom worked on our campus at one.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Time as well, so very familiar with with the forty acres.
- 3:29He himself, going on, played a couple of years at Bradley,
- 3:32played the last two years in Indiana State. But he's
- 3:35one of those guys again that can make an open shot.
- 3:38He's an elite cutter, you know, we pride ourselves to
- 3:41being a really good cutting team. He's a space that
- 3:43got floor guy, really good offensive rebounder, you know, has
- 3:49a body to play physical and get up and down
- 3:51the floor, you know, and stuff. So I think he
- 3:53brings that along with obviously a lot of experience as well,
- 3:56you know, and and hopefully the guy that wants to
- 3:58continue to try to play with the chip on the shoulder.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Now, one thing that coaches always stress and they talk
- 4:03about quite a bit is rebounding. The the art, the science,
- 4:08the effort, everything about rebounding. And Kirk bowls from the
- 4:12Austin American instead way it used to be the Austin
- 4:14American Station now the Houston Chronicle. Kirk asked Roddy about rebounding.
- 4:18Does he want to see more out of his guys
- 4:20in terms of, you know, crashing the boards and getting
- 4:24to the glass and getting rebounds this season.
- 4:26Speaker 3: I think every team in the country goes into the
- 4:28year worrying about rebounding. Because what makes you a great team,
- 4:31makes you a great team, you got to be a
- 4:33team that takes care of the basketball. You don't beat yourselves, right,
- 4:36So value and taking care of the basketball. Physical mindset
- 4:41that allows you to play physical, all five guys blocking out,
- 4:45rebounding down, you know. You know, we want to try
- 4:48to play fast as well, where every time down we
- 4:51want to want to get a shot. But and then
- 4:53you know, obviously having a really good defense, you know,
- 4:56and a big part of having a really good defense
- 4:58and finishing possessions.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Is being able to block out. So you know, we
- 5:02work at it.
- 5:03Speaker 3: We've got a great strength coach that's really done a
- 5:05great job with our guys body over the course of
- 5:07the summer to hope they give them a mindset to
- 5:10come out and have application on the floor to play physical.
- 5:14You know, when that shot goes up, you look to
- 5:15hit somebody. If you don't get the rebound, your man
- 5:19doesn't get.
- 5:19Speaker 2: It, you know, and stuff.
- 5:20Speaker 3: So a lot of times it's not the biggest team
- 5:22we could roll out. You know, three or four or
- 5:24five seven footers does no good for us, right, It's
- 5:27what's in your chest in terms of if you want
- 5:29to do it. Can't you want to play physical? It
- 5:32doesn't matter what size you are, you know what I mean?
- 5:34We got good size, you know and stuff. But I
- 5:37do think that, you know, on the perimeter, we've got
- 5:39good size. I think our guards are rebound down really
- 5:41well for us, and that'll be a plus for us
- 5:44because we'll be able to get up and down the
- 5:46floor and play fast the way we want to.
- 5:48Speaker 1: All right, And then there were a couple of questions
- 5:50about this new world that the log Worts are going into,
- 5:55into the Southeastern Conference. One of the questions asked point
- 5:58blank was did he feel that the Big twelve is
- 6:03a better basketball league than the SEC? Because the Big
- 6:06twelve is, you know, it's got some good basketball programs
- 6:09in it, and it's made some runs. And so it
- 6:11was asked thing that the SEC is behind the Big
- 6:14twelve conference in terms of basketball and Rodney was saying,
- 6:16absolutely not.
- 6:18Speaker 3: I think the SEC, you know, obviously has great leadership
- 6:22with Greg thank He's done a great job came really
- 6:26building up the profile of the SEC from top to bottom,
- 6:31and no Knights. All great coaches, really good venues to
- 6:34play in, and really good players in the SEC. So
- 6:38they put eight teams in the tournament the last two
- 6:40years in the Big Twelve, you know, we had eight
- 6:43teams in the tournament this past year. We had seven
- 6:46the year before, So you know, there's no drop off
- 6:50in the SEC. Man, We're right at the top and
- 6:52one of the.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Best leagues in the country on basketball.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Stam one okay, and then one other thing about the
- 6:56SEC and just kind of diving into what the sky
- 7:00els of play and Rodnie was asked, if do you
- 7:03notice anything appreciably different about how the SEC goes about
- 7:07its business and playing as opposed to the Big twelve?
- 7:09Speaker 3: Well, they think again, if you if you really get
- 7:11down to it now, you're talking about you know what.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Translates in the NCAA tournament.
- 7:15Speaker 3: You know, is the Big twelve more physical than the SEC?
- 7:20You know who files the most right when you when
- 7:23you get to the NCAA tournament.
- 7:24Speaker 2: You know, I think you start looking at those kind
- 7:26of things.
- 7:26Speaker 3: But I think there are teams in the SEC that
- 7:29play extremely physical. I mean, we played Tennessee the last
- 7:31three years and been easily probably the most physical team
- 7:35we've played on our schedule, you.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Know, and everything.
- 7:37Speaker 3: So you know, I think there's you know, on any
- 7:40given night, you're gonna have to deal with some physicality.
- 7:42You have to deal with teams that could you know,
- 7:44push the ball really fast in transition the teams that
- 7:47can really score the ball.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yeah, And as a result of that, they played Tennessee again.
- 7:52Now in conference play, Tennessee will come to Austin for
- 7:55one game after they have played them in some price
- 8:00years and that Hey, I want to do something before
- 8:03we get to the break here. Last week, all week long,
