- 0:06Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, welcome, welcome.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It's time now for car Talk with the Dungeons family
- 0:12Speaker 1: of Autos. Dungeons Toyota, Brad Dungeons in the house and
- 0:16Speaker 1: Brad you brought brands of course.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Good morning, Tom. How are you today? Everyone? Thank you
- 0:21Speaker 2: for joining us. We're so glad you're with us today.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We're getting on in May twenty twenty five and it's
- 0:26Speaker 2: almost the end of school and summer baseball and vacations,
- 0:29Speaker 2: and it's been very busy at the dealership this week. Today,
- 0:33Speaker 2: my guest, Shavon Robel, is from the West Side Community Center,
- 0:37Speaker 2: the executive director there for now about a year.
- 0:39Speaker 3: I think about a year.
- 0:40Speaker 2: You are correct, Welcome to the show. I can't wait
- 0:43Speaker 2: to learn more about what's going on at west Side
- 0:45Speaker 2: now and kind of the rebirth of west Side and
- 0:49Speaker 2: with the big plans and downs that you guys are
- 0:53Speaker 2: building and where that's all going, because it's so important
- 0:57Speaker 2: that all the community connections you guys make and support
- 1:01Speaker 2: for the kids, which is often a theme of our
- 1:04Speaker 2: show here and making sure Bartlesville is all connected. Absolutely
- 1:08Speaker 2: a great places for our kids to go and learn
- 1:13Speaker 2: things right, Absolutely so yeah, I first heard your story
- 1:18Speaker 2: at Rotary a few months ago. And you've been around
- 1:22Speaker 2: Bartlesville for a long time, right, tell us a little
- 1:26Speaker 2: bit about your history and how you got to where
- 1:28Speaker 2: we are today.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Okay, absolutely, Well, I'm actually born and raised in Bartlesville.
- 1:33Speaker 4: I am a Barshon as we like to call ourselves,
- 1:37Speaker 4: and I attended the Westside Community Center as a kid.
- 1:39Speaker 4: So I started out when I was about six years old,
- 1:41Speaker 4: taking tap in, ballet and soap carving and all the
- 1:45Speaker 4: things that go into that nature.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Is a wonderful place.
- 1:47Speaker 4: It's actually the first place ever received a job as well.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Then you know how you go off to college, move away.
- 1:54Speaker 4: And last year I received a phone call that the
- 1:57Speaker 4: Westside Community Center was on the verge of closing. I
- 2:00Speaker 4: put together a strategic plan, presented it to the board
- 2:03Speaker 4: and to the community, and.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Here we are.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Okay. So it's like just a real dream. I mean,
- 2:08Speaker 2: you found a need and you said we can't let
- 2:11Speaker 2: this go, and yeah, no, I think I thank you
- 2:14Speaker 2: for that. I think it's great. I know Morris was
- 2:17Speaker 2: a great friend of mine, and I know I've been
- 2:19Speaker 2: in such a passion it is for so long. Yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 2: but it goes way back in our community and tell
- 2:27Speaker 2: us a bit about that history and how west Side
- 2:31Speaker 2: got started.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely, so Westside Community Center has been a part
- 2:35Speaker 4: of Bartlesville's history for seventy four years. Actually next year
- 2:39Speaker 4: marks are seventy fifth anniversary, so we're super excited about that.
- 2:42Speaker 4: But what most people don't know is that the plans
- 2:44Speaker 4: for the West Side started in like the twenties, about
- 2:47Speaker 4: the late twenties, early thirties, and there's actually news clipping
- 2:51Speaker 4: showing meetings that were taking place between individuals here in
- 2:55Speaker 4: Bartlesville to bring those plans to fruition.
- 2:58Speaker 3: So it just kind of shows you too that when
- 2:59Speaker 3: you have a.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Dream, don't give up on it, because what were plans
- 3:02Speaker 4: in the thirties came to fruition in their early fifties
- 3:05Speaker 4: and that's all thanks to who most people know, ks
- 3:08Speaker 4: Boots Atoms. When they were preparing to build the west
- 3:11Speaker 4: Side Community Center, the war was going on, they put
- 3:14Speaker 4: a halt on building new, on any new constructions, and
- 3:18Speaker 4: so he was building the Atoms building, which we all
- 3:21Speaker 4: see when we go downtown. And so those buildings that
- 3:24Speaker 4: his engineers and different people that were constructing that building
- 3:28Speaker 4: were kind of stationed in. He donated those to the
- 3:31Speaker 4: west Side Community Association, and that is how our first.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Building came about on sixth and Oak. So if you
- 3:38Speaker 3: passed by where I believe.
- 3:39Speaker 4: It's the County Jail down Oak, we were right along
- 3:43Speaker 4: the lines of there was a first original building and
- 3:45Speaker 4: it was there until nineteen eighty six when it burnt
- 3:47Speaker 4: down and then we ended up moving over to cast
- 3:52Speaker 4: FIVA on South Ucy.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah, use, yeah, right, absolutely. And you have so many
- 3:57Speaker 2: great programs that go on all the time, and you
- 4:00Speaker 2: know some of those are you know, just like I mentioned,
- 4:03Speaker 2: involved kids and tutoring and mentoring and all that. But
- 4:08Speaker 2: tell us about the core programs and what it is
- 4:11Speaker 2: that you guys do and your main mission.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Well, I love obviously get really excited when we talk
- 4:17Speaker 4: about the Westside Community Center. But one of our core
- 4:20Speaker 4: programs for our students is called CASH is Community Advanced
- 4:23Speaker 4: Steady Hall, and so it's an after.
- 4:25Speaker 3: School program for kids, but it's a little bit different.
- 4:28Speaker 4: So what we are reimagining with that program is to
- 4:31Speaker 4: not necessarily recreate another place for kids to go, but
- 4:35Speaker 4: we want to be an addition to the wonderful programs
- 4:38Speaker 4: that we already have in Bartosville. As you know, we
- 4:40Speaker 4: have the Rock, we have the Why, we have the
- 4:41Speaker 4: Boys and Girls Club. We don't want to take away
- 4:44Speaker 4: from that or compete with them. We want to be
- 4:46Speaker 4: an addition to that. So that's where we offer our
- 4:48Speaker 4: Esteam initiatives. We have a youth entrepreneurship program that we have.
- 4:52Speaker 4: We have a community garden that's intergenerational, so there are
- 4:56Speaker 4: some really awesome things as well as like VR so
- 4:58Speaker 4: we have some kind of force development that we're teaching
- 5:01Speaker 4: the kids at an early age to kind of get
- 5:03Speaker 4: them involved in some things that we believe will be
- 5:06Speaker 4: beneficial for the city of Bartlesville as a whole.
- 5:08Speaker 3: But that's one of our main programs.
- 5:10Speaker 4: And you mentioned Morris McCorvey, who was one of my
- 5:14Speaker 4: late mentors as well. Him and James Abraham were the
- 5:18Speaker 4: executive directors that.
- 5:19Speaker 3: I came up under.
- 5:21Speaker 4: But he was a major part of Summer Fine Arts
- 5:24Speaker 4: and that is a program that we haven't had in
- 5:26Speaker 4: Bartlesville in over a decade and we're bringing it back
- 5:29Speaker 4: next month. We are super excited about that. So you
- 5:32Speaker 4: have a week of painting, a week of theater, you
- 5:35Speaker 4: have a week of entrepreneurship, a week of writing, and
- 5:38Speaker 4: then we have something fun. We are adding in dejaying
- 5:42Speaker 4: and podcasting for a week because we were It is
- 5:47Speaker 4: fourth through eighth grade for the program, and then we
- 5:49Speaker 4: have apprenticeships for ninth through twelfth grade. So any ninth
- 5:53Speaker 4: through twelfth graders that think they want to want to
- 5:55Speaker 4: be involved in social media marketing, business marketing, event planning,
- 5:59Speaker 4: they will actually come along and kind of direct that program.
- 6:03Speaker 4: And so on August second, they'll have their finale and
- 6:05Speaker 4: it's going to be completely youth rane like it's going
- 6:08Speaker 4: to be awesome.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Super exciting. That kind of sounds like I'm id.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Yes, I think every person in like everyone that went
- 6:16Speaker 4: through the West Side that has like a love for poetry,
- 6:19Speaker 4: we can all accredited to him just everything that has
- 6:21Speaker 4: to do with arts and poetry. And he was just
- 6:24Speaker 4: a pioneer in that area. And there's I don't believe
- 6:27Speaker 4: there's anyone that came through the West Side that does
- 6:29Speaker 4: not have a really cool more story in some way
- 6:33Speaker 4: that's awesome.
- 6:34Speaker 2: That's that is so cool and yeah, no that's neat
- 6:38Speaker 2: So quotas what are the dates of the Fine Arts Camp?
- 6:42Speaker 4: Yes, it is June twenty third through August second, So
- 6:46Speaker 4: we have our June teenth on June twenty first, and
- 6:49Speaker 4: not following Monday.
- 6:51Speaker 3: That center is going to be past the kids.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Busy summer is a busy summer, is yeah. And I
- 6:56Speaker 2: wanted to talk about June teenth. That was you know,
- 6:59Speaker 2: kind of you coming out a little bit last year
- 7:01Speaker 2: when you kind of we're just getting going and announcing
- 7:05Speaker 2: them Dowmon and stuff like that, and so but you're
- 7:09Speaker 2: going to continue to keep that Juneteenth going here in Bartlesville,
- 7:12Speaker 2: which is so cool.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Absolutely, and we're excited about this year. As you mentioned
- 7:17Speaker 4: last year it was it was a kind of a
- 7:18Speaker 4: mix between wcc's grand reopening and then Juneteenth. Well, this
- 7:23Speaker 4: year we're taking a different direction. So in March, we.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Took a trip.
- 7:28Speaker 4: We visited some of the Oklahoma historical black towns and
- 7:31Speaker 4: we learned something about our history that none of us
- 7:33Speaker 4: on that bus knew, which was there was a Civil
- 7:35Speaker 4: War that was fault right here in Oklahoma and it
- 7:38Speaker 4: was right up the street from one of the historical
- 7:40Speaker 4: black towns. But what we learned from that is that
- 7:44Speaker 4: these are just black infantrymen that came and fought alongside
- 7:48Speaker 4: Union soldiers, some from tribal soldiers as well, that came
- 7:53Speaker 4: together to fight in that war. And because of that,
- 7:57Speaker 4: it had a direct impact into Juneteenth, because Juneteenth is
- 8:01Speaker 4: a celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation and how it was delayed,
- 8:05Speaker 4: and usually it's centered around Texas, but many people don't
- 8:09Speaker 4: know that right here in Oklahoma when that when that
- 8:12Speaker 4: proclamation came about, these enslaved people in the state were
- 8:17Speaker 4: not necessarily freed at that time because we were Indian
- 8:19Speaker 4: territory and it was a sovereign nation.
- 8:22Speaker 3: So it's very.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Interesting to talk about how that Civil War played a
- 8:27Speaker 4: part in how those tribes let go those individuals, how
- 8:32Speaker 4: those individuals joined together and then created these very cool communities.
- 8:38Speaker 4: And so what some people can see as a really
- 8:40Speaker 4: horrific part of history also ends up coming into a
- 8:44Speaker 4: beautiful part of history because it's.
- 8:47Speaker 3: It's not just black history or Juneteenth, but it is
- 8:50Speaker 3: Oklahoma history.
- 8:52Speaker 4: So we have someone from the Battle at Honeyfield that
- 8:55Speaker 4: we'll come and talk about that, and I'm working on
- 8:57Speaker 4: one of our local historians and hopefully he hears me
- 9:01Speaker 4: to come alongside as well and talk about that that
- 9:05Speaker 4: aspect of really just kind of even honoring those soldiers
- 9:08Speaker 4: that played a pivotal role in that that often go
- 9:10Speaker 4: overlooked in just our Oklahoma history Black history.
- 9:13Speaker 3: It's just a really cool aspect. So we really just
- 9:17Speaker 3: want to educate the community. But it's family reunion.
- 9:19Speaker 4: So we will have our first annual barbecue cookoff.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Who doesn't like barbecue?
- 9:24Speaker 2: Of course barbecue.
- 9:25Speaker 3: I'm just saying like you cannot go wrong with that.
- 9:28Speaker 3: And so you know, you.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Pay a little entry feet.
- 9:31Speaker 4: It's a contest, So the whole street in front up
- 9:33Speaker 4: between Agape and the West Side will be filled full
- 9:37Speaker 4: of people like smokers, ready to compete in this competition.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Judges.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Well, so that's the fun part.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Everyone gets like a certain number of tickets, so you
- 9:48Speaker 4: get to go try all these sample all these different foods.
- 9:51Speaker 3: You get to vote on who you think is best.
- 9:53Speaker 4: And then we're going to tap local some local people
- 9:55Speaker 4: to be some celebrity judges as well on that.
- 9:59Speaker 3: That we think is fun. But yeah, we have that
- 10:01Speaker 3: car show, kid zone and.
- 10:02Speaker 2: A car show.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Yes, so we're just kind of excited. Guys got some cars, Well,
- 10:07Speaker 3: then we have to happen to you in your cars.
- 10:09Speaker 4: But no, it really is just a community wide celebration,
- 10:13Speaker 4: and that's what we're.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Calling it, a family re union. We're a community and.
- 10:17Speaker 4: We want to celebrate every aspect of history and our
- 10:21Speaker 4: culture that makes this city so great.
- 10:23Speaker 2: That's awesome, it's such a great story and it's good,
- 10:26Speaker 2: great to hear about all this stuff going on. We'll
- 10:29Speaker 2: come back to that in a minute. I want to
- 10:31Speaker 2: talk car business just for a second. We've had, like
- 10:34Speaker 2: I said earlier, a busy week at the dealership. We're
- 10:37Speaker 2: getting lots of transports of cars in. At this point,
- 10:41Speaker 2: it's still kind of a lot of uncertainty in the
- 10:43Speaker 2: business world with the tariff stuff going on and the
- 10:46Speaker 2: automotive supply chain issues that that represents. What's cool is
- 10:52Speaker 2: Toyota at this point is continued shipping all the cars.
- 10:55Speaker 2: They are not passing through any of the tariff costs
- 10:58Speaker 2: at this point. So their plan is to basically, you know,
- 11:02Speaker 2: see where everything settles out, and you know, I think
- 11:06Speaker 2: we'll see as it goes. It is. There's been some
- 11:09Speaker 2: press this week about the big cost that it is
- 11:13Speaker 2: having for them, so I'm sure they're going to have
- 11:16Speaker 2: to adjust at some point, but at this point, there
- 11:19Speaker 2: have no ben taraf increases on car prices, so we've
- 11:23Speaker 2: continued to have availability of them. Not you know, if
- 11:26Speaker 2: you're looking for something specific on a Toyota side, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 2: in some models it's it is kind of hard to
- 11:32Speaker 2: get exactly what you want, but do reach out to
- 11:35Speaker 2: our team. We've got about I think this as of
- 11:38Speaker 2: this morning, we had fifteen on the ground and three
- 11:41Speaker 2: of those were sold, and there were about I think
- 11:45Speaker 2: it was twenty or so on the that are on
- 11:49Speaker 2: the way, and it'll be here in the next few weeks.
- 11:51Speaker 2: And they just are turning so fast. And I'm talking
- 11:55Speaker 2: to the cars that are available though, like the whole
- 11:57Speaker 2: new four Runner, we've got a TRD pro for Runner
- 12:02Speaker 2: allocated to us, plus two others that will be here soon.
- 12:05Speaker 2: And if you haven't seen the all new four Runner,
- 12:08Speaker 2: there is one on the ground over there right now,
- 12:10Speaker 2: beautiful red SR five. That's really a nice update on
- 12:14Speaker 2: the on the vehicle. I think you want to check
- 12:17Speaker 2: that out. The other one that you want to might
- 12:20Speaker 2: interest a lot of pilks these times these days is
- 12:23Speaker 2: the land Cruiser, another all new comeback for our land
- 12:28Speaker 2: Cruiser model, and uh, you know a little bit different
- 12:30Speaker 2: from the previous land Cruiser, so this one is slotted
- 12:33Speaker 2: in uh not as the the premiere luxury suv for Toyota,
- 12:40Speaker 2: but the Sequalia is now now essentially that and land
- 12:44Speaker 2: Cruisers back to its original heritage. Is more of a
- 12:47Speaker 2: of a rough and tumble off road vehicle. It's it's
- 12:51Speaker 2: a little bit more I guess functional and uh and
- 12:56Speaker 2: but it has all the technology and really cool cool
- 13:00Speaker 2: design and it's neat for like adventure stuff and getting outside.
- 13:05Speaker 2: And last week I talked a bit about our new
- 13:09Speaker 2: trail hunter addition on these vehicles. We had a Tacoma
- 13:13Speaker 2: on the ground that's did sell already, but it was
- 13:17Speaker 2: a beautiful vehicle that had all kinds of cool tech.
- 13:21Speaker 2: It was bought by a guy who who had a
- 13:25Speaker 2: Ranger that he had modified completely, had solar panels on it,
- 13:28Speaker 2: a air compressor in it. He was a guy who
- 13:32Speaker 2: liked to get out there and use his truck. You
- 13:34Speaker 2: get to do stuff and go places, which so many
- 13:37Speaker 2: people do. And that's what Toyotas are so great at
- 13:40Speaker 2: that being able to help you get where you want
- 13:42Speaker 2: to go and get back. And then they have all
- 13:45Speaker 2: kinds of great modifications and things that can help you
- 13:49Speaker 2: get there and get back. Safely and have fun while
- 13:52Speaker 2: you're out there and get all your stuff out there
- 13:54Speaker 2: with you so that you can you can play and anyway,
- 13:58Speaker 2: that's that's good. I wanted to congratulate all the spring
- 14:03Speaker 2: sports teams they're wrapping up their seasons now, and soccer,
- 14:07Speaker 2: the boys' soccer team, you know, you know which you know,
- 14:09Speaker 2: my both my sons played on the soccer team at
- 14:12Speaker 2: the high school here and but they made it to
- 14:16Speaker 2: the state semi finals this year, you know, for I
- 14:18Speaker 2: don't know that that's ever happened all and every thing,
- 14:22Speaker 2: so and you know, it was a great season. A
- 14:25Speaker 2: lot of those young men played with body as our
- 14:28Speaker 2: youngest son, and congratulations to them. It's a it's a
- 14:32Speaker 2: it was a great season. Also seen some great signs
- 14:35Speaker 2: of life over at the Price Tower as the new
- 14:38Speaker 2: new owners owners have taken up, you know, started getting
- 14:43Speaker 2: the water out of the basement and s touch which
- 14:45Speaker 2: which we've you know, through the years, I know we
- 14:48Speaker 2: dealt with that at different times and uh so, but
- 14:51Speaker 2: I hopefully there they they've got the resources to do
- 14:56Speaker 2: what needs to be done over there and can get
- 14:59Speaker 2: thatuilding back to the condition that it needs to be.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I don't think it's as you know, as bad as
- 15:04Speaker 2: it could be. Truthfully, I mean it was well, you know,
- 15:08Speaker 2: I know, you know, well it was. It needs it
- 15:12Speaker 2: needs love. You know. I'm very involved in the previous
- 15:15Speaker 2: nonprofit that that owned it, and we did, you know,
- 15:20Speaker 2: we invested a lot, many millions of dollars in that
- 15:23Speaker 2: building and it but it takes a lot of money
- 15:27Speaker 2: to sustain it, to maintain it, to keep it alive,
- 15:30Speaker 2: just to pay for the electricity and the maintenance on
- 15:33Speaker 2: the building itself. So anyway, they've got a great plan.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I know that their success in running the Mayo Hotel
- 15:40Speaker 2: and and the Triangle Building Hotel over in Pasca, that
- 15:44Speaker 2: they can really take care of historic buildings that they know. Uh.
- 15:48Speaker 2: You know these new owners too, were we talked to
- 15:52Speaker 2: them before the the as we were trying to figure
- 15:57Speaker 2: out what to do, uh, and when we it up
- 16:00Speaker 2: passing it on to the people who owned it for
- 16:03Speaker 2: a few years there, but it was yeah, they at
- 16:08Speaker 2: that time, they didn't pull the trigger and make an offer.
- 16:12Speaker 2: And it's great that they have finally done it. I
- 16:14Speaker 2: think it's going to be great for our community and
- 16:17Speaker 2: I wish them all the luck in the world. I
- 16:19Speaker 2: hope I can help in a lot of in a
- 16:21Speaker 2: lot of ways make that a great thing. You know,
- 16:24Speaker 2: tomorrow night there's a the Summer Citizling event out there
- 16:28Speaker 2: at Unity Square. We all need to go out and
- 16:31Speaker 2: be proud of that and a great, great, beautiful venue
- 16:37Speaker 2: for our community events and such. Have you been out
- 16:40Speaker 2: to some events out there.
- 16:41Speaker 1: It's neat and the weather's going to cooperate nicely.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Good, that's good. You know, it's been we've had a
- 16:51Speaker 2: bit of summer recently and then yeah, it went from.
- 16:54Speaker 1: May to August twenty four hours.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Seems like it was definitely very warm yesterday particularly, but
- 17:01Speaker 2: thank goodness for the breeze. And when I left the
- 17:03Speaker 2: office this morning, it seemed like it was kind of
- 17:06Speaker 2: freshened up a little bit and it seemed pretty nice today.
- 17:10Speaker 2: So come on out and look at vehicles if you want.
- 17:13Speaker 2: We've got a great selection on the ground of new
- 17:15Speaker 2: and used vehicles. If you've got one you're looking to sell,
- 17:18Speaker 2: we certainly would make you an offer for that. And
- 17:21Speaker 2: you know, I once again i'd want to draw attention
- 17:23Speaker 2: to our great noncommissioned sales team. They're there to take
- 17:27Speaker 2: care of you and make sure you get treated right
- 17:29Speaker 2: and get a great deal on your vehicle, and you know,
- 17:33Speaker 2: to really try to take the stress out of that process.
- 17:36Speaker 2: And I guess I'll get back then to other stuff
- 17:40Speaker 2: that's going on. I did want to also mention the
- 17:45Speaker 2: Tri County Career Fair that was last Friday was awesome.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I had so much fun out there talking to people,
- 17:52Speaker 2: the great youth in our community, and you know, as
- 17:56Speaker 2: they're reaching that stage in life where they they're starting
- 18:01Speaker 2: either some of them are just in their first year,
- 18:03Speaker 2: so I'm not really sure what they're doing. Many and
- 18:07Speaker 2: somehow are on tracks, and it was just great to
- 18:09Speaker 2: talk to them about about the career paths and the
- 18:12Speaker 2: car business in general and get to meet so many
- 18:16Speaker 2: of them and met a lot of great people. I
- 18:19Speaker 2: heard from several students and other people who were out
- 18:23Speaker 2: there at the fair that they were listening to the
- 18:25Speaker 2: radio shows, so I shout out to them. That's always
- 18:28Speaker 2: good to know people are out there listening. But it
- 18:32Speaker 2: was fun. We talked to probably fifty or sixty people,
- 18:35Speaker 2: and you know people body shop experience, service and sales
- 18:41Speaker 2: office administration, and you know that some people don't often
- 18:44Speaker 2: think about, but the car business gives you an opportunity
- 18:47Speaker 2: and just about any kind of career path about everything
- 18:50Speaker 2: happens at a car dealership. The only ones that I
- 18:54Speaker 2: had that stumps me were like people in medical and
- 18:57Speaker 2: plumbers that I couldn't figure out what we would do
- 19:01Speaker 2: with plumbing.
- 19:02Speaker 1: And there's a little bit and when something happened, you're
- 19:06Speaker 1: gonna need one.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Yes, and there are there definitely we do. We do
- 19:10Speaker 2: use them, but.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Both fixed claws clack.
- 19:17Speaker 2: But that's funny, Okay, Well, that we'll go back to
- 19:25Speaker 2: the West Side Community Center probably is a good good segue,
- 19:29Speaker 2: don't you think. Thank you for bearing with us, and
- 19:36Speaker 2: that that was fun, and of course Eldercare is good.
- 19:39Speaker 2: The bad The barbecue was Saturday night and that was
- 19:41Speaker 2: a huge, huge event. Beautiful weather for that and and
- 19:46Speaker 2: we hadn't been for a couple of years because the
- 19:48Speaker 2: conflicts with soccer. But it was great to get back
- 19:51Speaker 2: out there. And it's a great event, perfect weather. And
- 19:54Speaker 2: and you were out there, Tom, I saw you there.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I made sure that chair I was sitting and was
- 19:59Speaker 1: never gonna move. It was a great event job and
- 20:04Speaker 1: I did it right.
- 20:05Speaker 2: So you know, you talked a lot about other you know,
- 20:09Speaker 2: the core programs at West Side Community Center. But there's
- 20:12Speaker 2: other stuff that goes on all the time every you know,
- 20:15Speaker 2: not probably every day really, I mean everything from yoga
- 20:19Speaker 2: classes to adult events and things. And you can even
- 20:23Speaker 2: rent the facility. So tell me about that, things like
- 20:28Speaker 2: how to get find out what is going on? Are
- 20:32Speaker 2: there volunteer opportunities? What is it that how can people help?
- 20:38Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 20:38Speaker 4: Absolutely, so we do have different things during a day.
- 20:42Speaker 4: On Mondays, we have yoga and we have high energy
- 20:45Speaker 4: dance classes.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Yoga's at five thirty. High Energy dance classes are at
- 20:48Speaker 3: six thirty.
- 20:49Speaker 4: They are amazing. Lisa has been a part of that's
- 20:52Speaker 4: the yoga instructor. She has been a part of the
- 20:55Speaker 4: West Side teaching classes there for a number of years
- 20:58Speaker 4: over a decade. So it is amazing because most people
- 21:01Speaker 4: don't know that either. So that's an opportunity for people
- 21:04Speaker 4: to come as well as the high energy dance classes
- 21:06Speaker 4: at are Monday evenings, Wednesday and Thursdays. So we've had
- 21:11Speaker 4: participants as young as six years old in there, and.
- 21:13Speaker 3: We've had a woman who was eighty.
- 21:17Speaker 4: I absolutely love her, but she came in and she
- 21:20Speaker 4: was like, I've got it.
- 21:21Speaker 3: I'm gonna get these moves down.
- 21:23Speaker 4: So it really is just this fun intergenerational type place
- 21:27Speaker 4: that bridges the gap with all those generations.
- 21:29Speaker 3: But we have a garden.
- 21:31Speaker 4: We're a little bummed out a couple of months ago
- 21:33Speaker 4: when the wind came and pretty much collapsed our greenhouse. However,
- 21:38Speaker 4: we did get some things planned. We have about twenty
- 21:40Speaker 4: six different things from Pepper's to cilantro to a little
- 21:43Speaker 4: olive tree thing that is growing there.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I mean, we literally have a bunch of everything that's there.
- 21:49Speaker 4: So we definitely welcome the community to come out and
- 21:51Speaker 4: just learn about gardening, participate in that.
- 21:54Speaker 3: We have cooking classes. Next Thursday.
- 21:57Speaker 4: We actually have a financial class, so we have two
- 21:59Speaker 4: gentlemen that are coming just to teach people everything from
- 22:02Speaker 4: savings to investing to what even happens if you've done
- 22:05Speaker 4: all the right things. You've saved, you've invested, have you
- 22:07Speaker 4: taken a look at your portfolio to make sure that
- 22:09Speaker 4: you have things in the right place. So they just
- 22:11Speaker 4: kind of provide some insight into that things that people
- 22:14Speaker 4: never think of.
- 22:15Speaker 3: You kind of get in something and stick and stay.
- 22:17Speaker 4: But we're really excited about a initiative that we're working
- 22:22Speaker 4: on which ties into what you were talking about at
- 22:24Speaker 4: Tri County Tech with the Career Fair, So we are
- 22:28Speaker 4: right now. We'll be releasing it here within the next
- 22:32Speaker 4: sixty days or so. But it is a workforce development bridge.
- 22:36Speaker 4: And so as you know, we have two amazing companies
- 22:40Speaker 4: that are coming into Martlesville that will generate what well
- 22:43Speaker 4: over three hundred jobs. When it comes to trade and
- 22:46Speaker 4: so oftentimes we tell kids that they need to go
- 22:49Speaker 4: to college, they need to go to university or a college,
- 22:53Speaker 4: but we don't ever consider well, some people do, but
- 22:55Speaker 4: I really also believe that not every.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Kid isn't meant for college.
- 22:59Speaker 4: You don't want to push a young person somewhere where
- 23:01Speaker 4: they're not able to thrive, but many of them can
- 23:04Speaker 4: pick up a trade. And the beautiful part of that
- 23:06Speaker 4: is we have Tri County Tech that's right here, which
- 23:08Speaker 4: is an amazing program.
- 23:11Speaker 3: You absolutely can which is great that.
- 23:13Speaker 4: You said that because one of the companies that's coming
- 23:15Speaker 4: in that gentleman, I believe he actually did go to college.
- 23:19Speaker 4: He has a degree, but he is heading up a
- 23:22Speaker 4: trade industry. So it just kinds of show you how
- 23:24Speaker 4: both of those things kind of interconnect. But we want
- 23:26Speaker 4: to be that bridge for people to do that. So
- 23:29Speaker 4: even if it's the young kids helping them understand that
- 23:32Speaker 4: trade is a very good profession. There are many different
- 23:35Speaker 4: trades that you can go into and make a really
- 23:37Speaker 4: great living from that. But then also we have situations
- 23:40Speaker 4: where we have individuals who were once homeless and are
- 23:43Speaker 4: finding themselves housed again and they're needing to re enter
- 23:47Speaker 4: back into society. We want to be that bridge for
- 23:50Speaker 4: them to help them get all the.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Resources that they need. Because when you have people who
- 23:54Speaker 3: are let's say, leaving.
- 23:58Speaker 4: After being incarcerated or coming from an unhused situation, not
- 24:02Speaker 4: all of them are in the position to immediately enter
- 24:05Speaker 4: into school or to immediately enter into a job. You
- 24:08Speaker 4: have some gaps that are there. And so the West
- 24:10Speaker 4: Side wants to come along and be that resource connector
- 24:14Speaker 4: that connects people to the resources that they need, but
- 24:17Speaker 4: also provides them with some training to be able to
- 24:20Speaker 4: fill in some of those gaps when it comes to employment,
- 24:23Speaker 4: so that we can be that resume builder for them
- 24:26Speaker 4: and also be the one that can speak on behalf
- 24:28Speaker 4: of them when they're going to get those jobs. And
- 24:30Speaker 4: so Bartlesville is just booming in some really great ways,
- 24:34Speaker 4: and so we want to make sure that we are
- 24:37Speaker 4: stewarding and cultivating relationships with individuals, with our donors, with
- 24:41Speaker 4: even different organizations, so that we can really be that
- 24:45Speaker 4: impact into the city intentionally. And so, you know, we
- 24:49Speaker 4: live in a really great city, a really great city
- 24:52Speaker 4: that has so many different organizations and resources and very
- 24:56Speaker 4: caring people, but oftentimes you don't know who they are
- 25:00Speaker 4: or how to get to them.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Sometimes it goes on behind the scenes. You know. It's
- 25:04Speaker 2: cool how and you mentioned it earlier, how they the
- 25:06Speaker 2: organizations kind of work together to build that network of
- 25:12Speaker 2: support for everybody.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Absolutely wherever it's needed.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And it is one of the great things about Bartlesville.
- 25:19Speaker 2: It is, and it's very beautiful, especially for a community
- 25:23Speaker 2: our size.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Absolutely, But I don't forget to say if anyone wants
- 25:26Speaker 4: to volunteer, you're welcome.
- 25:27Speaker 3: You can visit us at wcc Bartlesfield dot org.
- 25:31Speaker 4: We need volunteers for Juneteenth, we need volunteers for Summer
- 25:34Speaker 4: Fine Arts, and then we just need volunteers just in.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Generally, there's a membership.
- 25:38Speaker 4: You can become a members It is very very very affordable.
- 25:42Speaker 3: It's thirty dollars a year for an individual.
- 25:44Speaker 4: It is forty dollars a year for a family, and
- 25:48Speaker 4: so that gets you access to all the different things.
- 25:50Speaker 4: We have discounts on facility rentals as well as like
- 25:54Speaker 4: I said, we have cooking classes and financial classes that
- 25:57Speaker 4: you will be able to be a part of. And
- 25:58Speaker 4: we have some initiatives that we are ready to release
- 26:02Speaker 4: and so some things that will be membership exclusive as well.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Awesome. Wow, Well, it's been great to hear about everything
- 26:11Speaker 2: coming up at west Side Community Center and we'll look
- 26:15Speaker 2: forward to your juneteenth event and the summer arts program.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Find arts and people are interested in that and all
- 26:21Speaker 2: the other programs can visit your website. You mentioned what
- 26:25Speaker 2: is that again.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Wccbartlesville dot O RG.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Awesome and well thank you to coming and for coming
- 26:34Speaker 2: into all your volunteers and members that have helped resurrect
- 26:41Speaker 2: I guess the west Side Community Share to make sure
- 26:44Speaker 2: that it continues, I think, is what else I'll say that,
- 26:46Speaker 2: And I really want to congratulate you on that and
- 26:52Speaker 2: your vision for that, and we hope to be able
- 26:57Speaker 2: to help in that process. And anyway, we'll be out
- 27:01Speaker 2: at the dealership here this afternoon looking to take care
- 27:05Speaker 2: of our customers. If you want to come to see us.
- 27:08Speaker 2: We're at at nineteen eleven Southeast Washington Boulevard, and I've
- 27:12Speaker 2: got a website that done just Choice or done just
- 27:15Speaker 2: Toyota dot com the way you want to get there,
- 27:18Speaker 2: and you can call us at nine one eight three
- 27:20Speaker 2: three three oh nine hundred and I guess other than that,
- 27:27Speaker 2: check out all the deals on on the website. You
- 27:30Speaker 2: can work your own deal in there. Go in there
- 27:33Speaker 2: and actually calculate payments to compare lease to purchase and
- 27:38Speaker 2: a cash price you can, so it's really easy to
- 27:41Speaker 2: actually do those that research you want to do to
- 27:44Speaker 2: find out exactly what it's going to cost. We try
- 27:48Speaker 2: to keep everything fast, transparent and feel good is what
- 27:51Speaker 2: we call it, and just want to be your local
- 27:55Speaker 2: small town dealer. Were true family business and have been
- 27:59Speaker 2: around about it a little longer in fact than West
- 28:02Speaker 2: Side Community Center. So that's that's great, and the congratulations.
- 28:07Speaker 2: She'll be on the upcoming seventy fifth year next year. Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 2: and we'll be looking forward to again to all the
- 28:15Speaker 2: events this summer.
- 28:17Speaker 1: And remember in summertimes coming and all brass vehicles have air.
- 28:21Speaker 2: That's true. Yes, folks, you've.
