Chapter eighteen. Away to the South, Dorothy wept bitterly at the passing of
• 0:06
her hope to get home to Kansas again. But when she thought it all
• 0:10
over, she was glad she had not gone up in a balloon, and
• 0:13
she also felt sorry at losing Oz, and so did her companions. The
• 0:18
tin woodman came to her and said, truly, I should be ungrateful if
• 0:22
I fail to mourn for a man who gave me a lovely heart. I
• 0:26
should like to cry a little because Oz is gone. If you will kindly
• 0:30
wipe away my tears so that I shall not rust with pleasure, she answered,
• 0:35
and brought a towel at once. Then the tin woodman wept for several
• 0:38
minutes, and she watched the tears carefully and wiped them away with the towel.
• 0:43
When he had finished, he thanked her kindly and oiled himself thoroughly with
• 0:47
his jeweled oil can to guard against mistap. The Scarecrow was now the ruler
• 0:52
of the Emerald City, and although he was not a wizard, the people
• 0:55
were proud of him, for they said, there is not another city in
• 0:59
all the world that is ruled by a stuffed man, and so far as
• 1:03
they knew they were quite right. The morning, after the balloon had gone
• 1:07
up with Oz, the four travelers met in the throne room and talked matters
• 1:11
over. The scarecrow sat in the big throne, and the others stood respectfully
• 1:15
before him. We are not so unlucky, said the new ruler, for
• 1:19
this palace and the Emerald City belonged to us, and we can do just
• 1:23
as we please. When I remember that a short time ago I was up
• 1:27
on a pole in a farmer's cornfield, and that now I am the ruler
• 1:30
of this beautiful city, I am quite satisfied with my lot, I also
• 1:36
said the tin woodman, AM well pleased with my new heart, And really
• 1:41
that was the only thing I wished in all the world. For my part,
• 1:45
I am content to knowing I am as brave as any beast that ever
• 1:49
lived, if not braver, said the lion modestly. If Dorothy would only
• 1:53
be contented to live in the Emerald City, continued the scarecrow, we might
• 1:57
all be happy together. But I don't want to live here, cried Dorothy.
• 2:02
I want to go to Kansas and live with Aunt em and Uncle Henry.
• 2:07
Well, then, what can be done? Inquired the woodman. The
• 2:10
scarecrow decided to think, and he thought so hard that the pins and needles
• 2:15
began to stick out of his brains. Finally, he said, why not
• 2:19
call the wing monkeys and asked them to carry you over the desert. I
• 2:23
never thought of that, said Dorothy joyfully. It's just the thing. I'll
• 2:28
go at once for the golden cap. When she brought it into the throne
• 2:30
room, she spoke the magic words, and soon the band of wing monkeys
• 2:34
flew in through the open window and stood beside her. This is the second
• 2:38
time you have called us, said the Monkey King, bowing before the little
• 2:43
girl. What do you wish? I want you to fly with me to
• 2:46
Kansas, said Dorothy. But the Monkey King shook his head. This cannot
• 2:51
be done, he said. We belong to this country alone and cannot leave
• 2:54
it. There has never been a wing monkey in Kansas yet, and I
• 2:59
suppose there never will be, for they don't belong there. We shall be
• 3:02
glad to serve you in any way in our power, but we cannot cross
• 3:06
the desert. Goodbye, and with another bow, the Monkey King spread his
• 3:10
wings and flew away through the window, followed by all his band. Dorothy
• 3:15
was ready to cry with disappointment. I have wasted the charm of the golden
• 3:19
cap to no purpose, she said, For the wing monkeys cannot help me.
• 3:24
It is certainly too bad, said the tender hearted woodman. The scarecrow
• 3:29
was thinking again, and his head bulged out so horribly that Dorothy feared it
• 3:34
would burst. Let us call in the soldier with the green whiskers, he
• 3:37
said, and ask his advice. So the soldier was summoned and entered the
• 3:40
throne room timidly, For while Oz was alive, he never was allowed to
• 3:45
come farther than the door. This little girl, said the scarecrow to the
• 3:49
soldier, wishes to cross the desert. How can she do so? I
• 3:54
cannot tell, answered the soldier, for no one has ever crossed the desert
• 3:59
unless it is Oz himself. Is there no one who will help me,
• 4:02
asked Dorothy earnestly. Glinda might, he suggested. Who is Glinda, inquired
• 4:09
the scarecrow. The Witch of the South. She is the most powerful of
• 4:13
all the witches and rules over the quadlings. Besides, her castle stands on
• 4:17
the edge of the desert, so she may know a way to cross it.
• 4:21
Glinda is a good witch, isn't she asked the child. The Quadlings
• 4:27
think she is good, said the soldier, And she is kind to everyone.
• 4:30
I have heard that Glinda is a beautiful woman who knows how to keep
• 4:34
young in spite of the many years she has lived. How can I get
• 4:39
to her castle, asked Dorothy. The road is straight to the south,
• 4:43
he answered, but is said to be full of dangers to travelers. There
• 4:46
are wild beasts in the woods, and a race of queer men who do
• 4:50
not like strangers to cross their country. For this reason, none of the
• 4:55
Quadlings ever come to the Emerald city. The soldier then left them, and
• 5:00
the scarecrow said, it seems, in spite of dangers that the best thing
• 5:04
Dorothy can do is travel to the land of the South and ask Glinda to
• 5:08
help her. For of course, if Dorothy stays here, she will never
• 5:11
get back to Kansas. You must have been thinking, again, remarked the
• 5:15
tin woodman. I have said the scarecrow. I shall go with Dorothy,
• 5:20
declared the lion, for I am tired of your city and long for the
• 5:25
woods in the country. Again, I am really a wild beast, you
• 5:28
know. Besides, Dorothy will need someone to protect her. That is true,
• 5:33
agreed the woodman. My axe may be of service to her. So
• 5:36
I shall go with her to the land of the South. When shall we
• 5:42
start, asked the scarecrow. Are you going? They ask in surprise.
• 5:46
Certainly. If it wasn't for Dorothy, I should never have had brains.
• 5:50
She lifted me from the pole in the cornfield and brought me to the Emerald
• 5:54
City. So my good luck is all due to her, and I shall
• 5:57
never leave her until she starts back to King Kansas for good and all.
• 6:01
Thank you, said Dorothy, gratefully. You are all very kind to me,
• 6:05
But I should like to start as soon as possible. We shall go
• 6:10
tomorrow morning, returned the Scarecrow. So now let us all get ready,
• 6:15
for it will be a long journey. End of Chapter eighteen.
