Latest / The Feminine Ledger / Why More Revenue Doesn't Create Stability in Your Business
Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Feminine Ledger.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: This podcast explores the deeper patterns underneath business, money, and decision making, and what shifts when you begin to see them clearly.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: My name is Allison Fisher, and my work focuses on helping women founders translate growth into structure so their businesses don't just expand, but actually hold.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: On today's episode, we are going to be talking about something that almost every founder believes at some point, and that is that once they reach a certain level of revenue, the business will feel easier.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And we're also going to discuss what actually happens instead.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Let's begin.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: There's a quiet expectation that forms early in business.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: It sounds like if I can just get to this next level, things will settle.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: More space, more stability, more ease.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And in the early stages, that's partially true.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Because revenue does solve certain problems.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: It creates breathing room, optionality, and the ability to make decisions from a less constrained place.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: But what most founders don't anticipate is this.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Revenue doesn't remove pressure.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: It changes the type of pressure inside business.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Let's look at the first the first shift from scarcity to structural pressure.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: At lower revenue levels, pressure becomes and comes from scarcity.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: There isn't enough cash, consistency, or predictability.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: So the founder is focused on generating revenue and stabilizing inflow.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: But as revenue increases, scarcity pressure is replaced with something more complex.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And that is structural pressure.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: This is a pressure created by how much the business is built.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Not whether it makes money, but how that money moves through the structure of the business.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Let's look next at fixed cost layering.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: As revenue grows, founders begin to build support.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: They hire team members, contractors, and specialists.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: They invest in systems, tools, and infrastructure.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And all of this is necessary.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: But each layer introduces something, commitment.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Commitment creates pressure.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Because now the business has a baseline it needs to sustain.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: For profit, for flexibility.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So even as revenue increases, the margin for error decreases.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: This is where founders start to feel they can't drop below this level.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: That feeling is structural, not emotional.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Let's examine complexity, the complexity multiplier effect.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: There's another layer that's less discussed.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: As a business grows, it becomes more complex to operate, not just in size, but in interaction.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: More clients means more communication, more variables, more edge cases.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: More team means more coordination, more decision pathways, and more dependency.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And complexity has a cost.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: It's not always linearly visible in the numbers, but very present in how the business feels to run.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: This is where effort starts increasing again, even at higher revenue levels.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Next, let's examine revenue quality.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: This is where we get to something that most founders don't fully examine, and that is revenue quality.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Two businesses can generate the same revenue and feel completely different to operate because one is built on recurring, predictable, and well-structured inflow, and the other business is built on constant generation, variability, and ongoing effort to maintain.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: So even at the same revenue level, one business creates stability, the other creates pressure.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Next, let's look at why more revenue doesn't fix this.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: This is where the misunderstanding happens.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Founders assume if I just increase revenue further, this will resolve.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: But if the structure underneath the business hasn't changed, more revenue amplifies the existing dynamics.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: So fixed costs increase further, complexity deepens, and pressure compounds.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And the founder ends up working harder at a higher level.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: What is the real shift?
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: The shift isn't how do I make more money?
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: It's how is this business structured to hold the money it already has?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: This is where pressure actually reduces.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: When costs are intentional, revenue is understood, and decisions are supported by clarity.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: I really want you to take this with you.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Revenue creates visibility, structure reduces pressure.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: And this is the transition I focus on inside the sovereign business audit at the sovereign ledger.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Not just how much your business is making, but how it's holding, what it's making.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Because when that becomes clear, the business doesn't just grow.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: It becomes something you can actually stand inside.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: If you would like more information about working with me, you can check out the links here in the show notes, or you can go to thesovereignledger.co.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Until next time, stay disciplined, stay discerning, and stay sovereign.
