- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to an Airwave Media podcast. Hi, and welcome
- 0:17Speaker 1: back to week two. Yeah, we did it. I came back. Hooray.
- 0:23Speaker 1: So I just stop saying so so much. But I
- 0:26Speaker 1: love saying so so much because then I say it
- 0:28Speaker 1: so so so much. On No, Welcome back everybody to
- 0:33Speaker 1: Who Did What? Now? The History Podcast with me your host,
- 0:38Speaker 1: Katie Charlewood, Gin Drinker and reader of books. Disclaimer, this
- 0:43Speaker 1: is not your history class. For instance, I was going
- 0:46Speaker 1: to call this the funck word history show, but my
- 0:50Speaker 1: mother said no. So we're moving back in time a
- 0:54Speaker 1: little bit from last week. We spoke about the nineteen
- 0:58Speaker 1: seventeen Miss World contest. Ah, now we're going back to
- 1:02Speaker 1: the fifties, in sixties. It's fine. I mean, it's gonna
- 1:07Speaker 1: go up to the eighties, but we're starting in the fifties.
- 1:10Speaker 1: It doesn't matter. One of my favorite favorite people in history,
- 1:16Speaker 1: Grace Kelly, Princess of Monica. You probably have a perception
- 1:21Speaker 1: of what you think Grace Kelly was, like, let me
- 1:23Speaker 1: tell you that perception was wrong, fucking wrong. I'm so
- 1:27Speaker 1: happy I love Grace Kelly. Grace Kelly, Oh, Grace Kelly
- 1:31Speaker 1: lived her life the way any of us would if
- 1:34Speaker 1: we were Grace Kelly. Oh, the beauty, the confidence, and
- 1:39Speaker 1: allegedly the ability to have multiple orgasms through penetration. What
- 1:45Speaker 1: would you explain a lot later on? Just just you wait.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Grace Kelly was the daughter of John Brendan Kelly. And
- 1:53Speaker 1: if he was an Irish immigrant or his parents were
- 1:55Speaker 1: Irish immigrants, somebody was an Irish immigrant whatever ended up
- 2:00Speaker 1: having a building company because Ireland. Effectively, what happened is
- 2:05Speaker 1: all the Irish people fled Ireland, moved to different countries
- 2:09Speaker 1: and built everything for everybody else. So being Irish, very Catholic,
- 2:15Speaker 1: Chris Kelly grew up a strict Catholic, you know, except
- 2:17Speaker 1: for the banging her way through Hollywood situation, and she
- 2:21Speaker 1: attended mass regularly. Just keep that in your mind. So surprise, surprise, Kelly.
- 2:28Speaker 1: John Brendan Kelly was an urse. Her father was the business.
- 2:36Speaker 1: He was quite wealthy. Some might say flush, others might say.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Her uncle George was a playwright and she spent a
- 2:47Speaker 1: lot of time with him because her dad wasn't really
- 2:50Speaker 1: that keen on her existence in general. Her dad was
- 2:56Speaker 1: a womanizer, you know, a man I know what you're saying.
- 3:00Speaker 1: In the twenties and thirties. What no shock, gasp. And
- 3:07Speaker 1: he made sure that they had a very strict Catholic upbringing.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'm knailing this point home, not quite nailing it on
- 3:14Speaker 1: the cross. I'm gonna I'm going to hell for that one,
- 3:19Speaker 1: isn't the funny thing? He didn't think that his daughter
- 3:23Speaker 1: Grace was his prettiest daughter, Grace Kelly, who looks what
- 3:28Speaker 1: you would imagine a beautiful person to look like. If
- 3:31Speaker 1: you would to imagine a beautiful person, you'd think Grace Kelly.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And to add insult to injury, her dad said that
- 3:41Speaker 1: acting was a slim cut above street walking. Good on
- 3:47Speaker 1: you there, John Brendan, No worries. That's a that's some positive,
- 3:52Speaker 1: a positive reinforcement there for your girl. No worries. She
- 3:56Speaker 1: wanted to go to New York to be an actress,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and he's like, fine, what you're saying in the barber's
- 4:03Speaker 1: in hotel. So the barber's and hotel for women was
- 4:06Speaker 1: very strict. If you've ever seen ancient Carter, I don't
- 4:09Speaker 1: know if they do that one or they have something
- 4:11Speaker 1: that's similar. And that's where Peggy Carter stays in the
- 4:16Speaker 1: Agent Carter TV show something too like that. So the
- 4:21Speaker 1: barbers in hotel, that's where sort of everybody stayed. Everyone
- 4:25Speaker 1: stayed there, So Ali McGraw, Candice Bergen, Lisam and Ellie
- 4:30Speaker 1: and just everybody. Everybody stayed there because it was where
- 4:34Speaker 1: respectful ladies stayed. So the barber's in hotel, it was
- 4:39Speaker 1: very much like no men above the first floor. There
- 4:42Speaker 1: was a code of conduct. There was a fucking dress code.
- 4:45Speaker 1: But Grace had to get her goods going, and goods
- 4:50Speaker 1: going they did so. When she was nineteen, she had
- 4:53Speaker 1: a Jewish boyfriend. So naturally, her mother, missus Kelly, assumed
- 4:58Speaker 1: that he was going to defill her daughter. Oh no, no, no,
- 5:03Speaker 1: she was so naturally missus Kelly's digging around in a
- 5:07Speaker 1: suitcase and finds condoms in it, and she throws an
- 5:12Speaker 1: absolute shit fit. And what does Gracey do. She goes
- 5:17Speaker 1: straight to New York, goes to his apartment and bangs him.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Mishah of Iran was in love with Grace and her
- 5:25Speaker 1: magical vagina, and she andy begged her to marry him,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and he even gave her some sweet sweet jewelery and
- 5:31Speaker 1: is sweeten the deal? And she knocked out of that one.
- 5:35Speaker 1: But she kept the Deuleira in anyway, because damn right, sir,
- 5:39Speaker 1: do not offer someone a gift a if it has conditions,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and b if you're gonna demand it back of things.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Most ever, not kill the aforementioned Jewish boyfriend of the condom.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Saga clocked that the frankly fabulous emmal bracelet that Grace
- 5:57Speaker 1: was wearing was one that Ali Can gifted to his lovers,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and so he latered out of there and Grace was like,
- 6:05Speaker 1: bye bye. I mean, she was probably classer than that.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm thinking, I wish you luck on your future endeavors.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Fun fact, Grace h never actually got on with Gary
- 6:22Speaker 1: Cooper or Carrie Grant. Good for her, I think she
- 6:28Speaker 1: did cause a bit of an uproar because she did
- 6:31Speaker 1: do a lot of her co stars, including Clark Cable
- 6:35Speaker 1: and Mogamble. When she was after that, she was shagging
- 6:40Speaker 1: William Holden, who was married and Grace, who Grace was
- 6:47Speaker 1: very Catholic, you know, and even with all of her extracurriculars,
- 6:50Speaker 1: she never actually missed mass. That's just skill at that
- 6:56Speaker 1: point anyway, So she's screwing William Holden and Holden's wife
- 7:02Speaker 1: was Protestant and Grace thought was that he could just
- 7:05Speaker 1: chuck the wife and marry her instead. Holden Hobert did
- 7:10Speaker 1: not agree because as far as Grace was concerned, like
- 7:13Speaker 1: in the eyes of God, you know, you're not really
- 7:15Speaker 1: married because you're married a Protestant and I'm Catholic. Kadda YadA,
- 7:18Speaker 1: YadA whatever. Next Ray Miland and dial m for murder
- 7:26Speaker 1: this who This almost destroyed her career because missus Meland
- 7:31Speaker 1: was a good body of head of Hopper. So head
- 7:35Speaker 1: Hooper was the gossip columnist of like the forties and fifties.
- 7:38Speaker 1: She was at she could make or break a career,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and she she publicly roasted Grace for getting on with Ray. Oh.
- 7:51Speaker 1: And then after that there was this sitch with Ben
- 7:56Speaker 1: Crosby and he wanted to her, but she just woned
- 8:02Speaker 1: the ride. You know. Yes, after that there was all
- 8:08Speaker 1: a cassine and he proposed to the effervescent Grace. When
- 8:12Speaker 1: her good Catholic parents shut that down. There was a
- 8:16Speaker 1: new way that their girl was marrying someone twice divorced
- 8:19Speaker 1: because of sacrilege and shit. During this time, during the
- 8:23Speaker 1: time she's engaged to him, he confessed like years later
- 8:27Speaker 1: that she had a that she had had an abortion
- 8:30Speaker 1: during that time. I mean, there's nobody to confirm and
- 8:32Speaker 1: deny it, but maybe she did. Who knows. And also
- 8:37Speaker 1: good for her. Your body, your choice, you look after yourself.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So in nineteen fifty five, she wins an oscar for
- 8:47Speaker 1: the Country Girl and she was up against Judy Garland. Now,
- 8:51Speaker 1: the legend goes that Grace was enjoying a lovely evening
- 8:56Speaker 1: with Marlon Brando and Judy Garland phones her, screaming down
- 9:01Speaker 1: the phone, calling her a bit and saying that Grace
- 9:05Speaker 1: stole the oscar from her. And then at some point,
- 9:10Speaker 1: I don't know whether this was before or after that,
- 9:13Speaker 1: but Judy Garland was asked if Grace Kelly was an
- 9:15Speaker 1: informaniac and her response was, if you could calm her down,
- 9:21Speaker 1: that's fucking savage, Judy. So back to the men. Grace
- 9:26Speaker 1: had an affair with Jean Pierre Omont. He proposed and
- 9:30Speaker 1: he was Jewish and parents Vito that and then Prince Rainier,
- 9:36Speaker 1: the third of Monaco, bursts into the scene. And this
- 9:40Speaker 1: dude just really wanted to marry a beautiful American starlet.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I mean, first of all, there's all the inbreeding in
- 9:48Speaker 1: European royalty, so you know, I get it. But secondly,
- 9:52Speaker 1: think of the stumps, such a lovely profile, and thirdly,
- 9:58Speaker 1: the Grimaldi are a petty, petty bunch. The Grimaldi is
- 10:04Speaker 1: the royal family Monocle. Okay, sure, wondering. Initially, Rainier wanted
- 10:11Speaker 1: to marry Marilyn Monroe, but she was deemed unsuitable for
- 10:17Speaker 1: a myriad of reasons. So here's the thing. Courting is weird.
- 10:23Speaker 1: There's chaperones and other nonsense to be followed, and so
- 10:27Speaker 1: they barely saw each other before they got married. So
- 10:31Speaker 1: technically the courtship lasted a year, but they didn't really
- 10:35Speaker 1: see each other for more than before they could get
- 10:37Speaker 1: the marriage going. The Grimaldi family again, the royal family
- 10:41Speaker 1: of Monca sent a doctor over to Grace to make
- 10:44Speaker 1: sure she could conceive, because you know you're gonna keep
- 10:48Speaker 1: those bloodlines going, just ask ken, really, So, Grace was
- 10:53Speaker 1: so worried that the doctor would discover that she had
- 10:55Speaker 1: been you know, deflowered several times over that when she
- 11:00Speaker 1: was being examined, she told the doctor that she had
- 11:03Speaker 1: actually busted her hymen playing field hockey, whether he bought
- 11:07Speaker 1: it or whether he just wanted an easy life. I
- 11:10Speaker 1: don't know either way. Grand so Monicle, a fledgling country't
- 11:17Speaker 1: expected a dowry, so they wanted a two million dollar dowry.
- 11:23Speaker 1: What do they referred to as substantial? Our father Brent
- 11:27Speaker 1: John Brendan, John Brendan, he was like fuck. So he
- 11:31Speaker 1: did eventually pay it because royalty when he wasn't happy
- 11:36Speaker 1: about it, but he was a dick, so it doesn't matter. Also,
- 11:41Speaker 1: Grace had to sign over custody of any future children
- 11:45Speaker 1: they had if they ever got divorced, because you know,
- 11:48Speaker 1: Gomaldi's are ass hats. Two weeks after the official announcement
- 11:53Speaker 1: of their engagement, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner published he
- 11:57Speaker 1: the first of a ten part series entitled My Daughter
- 12:02Speaker 1: Grace Kelly, Her Life and Romances that Missus John B. Kelly.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So this was basically it circulated to HER's newspapers all
- 12:11Speaker 1: across the country, and Grace's mother produced a stream of
- 12:17Speaker 1: revolutions regarding all the men in her life. So this
- 12:22Speaker 1: was at the point where even even Prince Rainier said that, like,
- 12:26Speaker 1: how could her own mother do that? Like, come on,
- 12:30Speaker 1: so when she had to travel over, so we had
- 12:32Speaker 1: to travel over to Monaco and g went by boat
- 12:35Speaker 1: and it became a very big thing. So before the
- 12:40Speaker 1: wedding happens, all of this, his family are basically stressing
- 12:45Speaker 1: her out to the point that she just starts losing weight.
- 12:48Speaker 1: She is freaking out. She's I think she's chain smoking.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I can't remember if that if I've just imagined her
- 12:55Speaker 1: chain smoking with she's actually chain smoking, But I guess
- 12:57Speaker 1: we'll figure out. At the time, when she was getting engaged,
- 13:01Speaker 1: Grace Kelly was still under contract to MGM. They were
- 13:04Speaker 1: pissed off because as a royal, she wouldn't be working anymore.
- 13:08Speaker 1: You know, she use a money ticket, she'd want an oscar.
- 13:11Speaker 1: She was again one of the most beautiful people to
- 13:15Speaker 1: ever have existed ever. In the end, MGM actually stage
- 13:19Speaker 1: managed the wedding. She was fair enough. You know, as
- 13:23Speaker 1: a royal you're expected to produce a orser. But she
- 13:28Speaker 1: got on that right away, right out of the gate.
- 13:30Speaker 1: She got pregnant on her honeymoon. Yeah, and she used
- 13:34Speaker 1: a bag to cover up the bump for a long time,
- 13:36Speaker 1: which is why it's actually a thing. Now there's like
- 13:39Speaker 1: a Grace Kelly bag or the Grace bagger, And the
- 13:42Speaker 1: whole point is like it's designed to hide a baby
- 13:44Speaker 1: bump so you know they're married, and turns out marrying
- 13:48Speaker 1: someone you don't really know isn't the you know, the
- 13:52Speaker 1: best idea. I mean, maybe spend a week or more
- 13:55Speaker 1: with someone before getting patrothed. It's you know, just said
- 14:00Speaker 1: so Prince Rainier was how do I put this? What's
- 14:03Speaker 1: the term a moody bastard? Right? He once smashed neck,
- 14:08Speaker 1: shattered a glass when Grace cut her hair short without
- 14:14Speaker 1: consulting him. Mate, fuck you. Oh, and he would storm
- 14:21Speaker 1: off and ignore her and or go to sleep. That
- 14:25Speaker 1: was how he finished a fight. That was how we
- 14:27Speaker 1: avoided fights. That was his sil I don't know if
- 14:29Speaker 1: you've ever been ignored and after a fight, or in
- 14:31Speaker 1: the middle of a fight, or what should be the
- 14:33Speaker 1: middle of a fight, and they just ignore you, Like wow,
- 14:40Speaker 1: how little do you mean to them? If they will
- 14:43Speaker 1: not acknowledge you. That's fucking that's some manipulative doll shit.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And I'm fucking sick. I hear it so much. But nope,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna get angry now. So Grace just throws herself
- 14:57Speaker 1: into parenting, raising her kids. Mother time. Here's the thing
- 15:02Speaker 1: I don't understand why he could be such a shitty
- 15:05Speaker 1: human when if it wasn't for Grace Kelly, he would
- 15:07Speaker 1: be fucked. So Grace Kelly effectively single handedly saved Monaco
- 15:13Speaker 1: from imploding. It was nearly bankrupt, hence the need for
- 15:17Speaker 1: a dowry, and it was about to get annexed by France. Boom.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Grace arrived and flipped everything around. That was how Monacle
- 15:27Speaker 1: became the place to be, became, you know, a gambling paradise.
- 15:32Speaker 1: It was for you know, the elite. And this happened
- 15:35Speaker 1: because it was the only way to save it effectively. Now,
- 15:39Speaker 1: the prince was irritated that he had to have his
- 15:44Speaker 1: picture taken all the time. Honey, no, they were not
- 15:50Speaker 1: interested in you. I'm sorry. I'm not sorry. It's sort
- 15:54Speaker 1: of a price to pay. You know, you don't want
- 15:57Speaker 1: your photo taken? What you want to marry a fucking starlett?
- 16:00Speaker 1: Who will? The whole point of which is to make
- 16:04Speaker 1: your country popular. I mean, everybody loved Grace. She was huge.
- 16:09Speaker 1: The was it like that. The people of monicch the
- 16:12Speaker 1: people of Monica loved her, The foreign dignitaries loved her.
- 16:16Speaker 1: She had grace, she had points, She had that skill
- 16:19Speaker 1: of making men think she was you know, intentive, attentive anyhow,
- 16:25Speaker 1: get mad at the thing. Oh, I want to go
- 16:28Speaker 1: to the top of the mountain, but I don't want
- 16:29Speaker 1: to have to climb to the top of the mountain.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Well there's only one way up, buckle, So put on
- 16:34Speaker 1: your fucking hiking boots and smile on the way up.
- 16:38Speaker 1: So Grace Kelly always wanted to go back into acting.
- 16:43Speaker 1: She was like, you know, I'll do this, but I'll
- 16:45Speaker 1: go back. So Hedgecock wanted so Edgecock wanted Grace to
- 16:51Speaker 1: start in Marnie with Joan Connery. But MGM remember them.
- 16:56Speaker 1: They were pissed because she still was under contract. Although
- 17:01Speaker 1: it was the entire principality of Monaco who vetoed the
- 17:04Speaker 1: idea torch and pitchfork style effectively, they didn't want to
- 17:09Speaker 1: see her play a thief who was being seduced or
- 17:12Speaker 1: was going to seduce Sean Connery. Either way, they were
- 17:17Speaker 1: not into that. They were like, not our princess. When
- 17:20Speaker 1: the tenth anniversary of their wedding anniversary hits, Prince Reini
- 17:24Speaker 1: asks her what she wants and she says she wants
- 17:26Speaker 1: a year off, but instead she ends up having kid
- 17:29Speaker 1: number three. Oh yeah, so ciebar I've got this. Back
- 17:34Speaker 1: in the USA, Grace's brother was He basically left his
- 17:38Speaker 1: wife and kids and married a trans women and they
- 17:42Speaker 1: were happy. The media were not, but Grace effectively completely
- 17:47Speaker 1: supported her brother in this you know, lovey, you love man.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Grace decided to just up and fuck off to Paris
- 17:55Speaker 1: because why get divorced when you can just go to
- 17:58Speaker 1: another country? And then she bumps through a conveyor belt
- 18:02Speaker 1: of younger men because sure, why not. Then it gets
- 18:05Speaker 1: to a point where Grace and Rainier they actually reconcile
- 18:11Speaker 1: and things start going really well again. So then if
- 18:14Speaker 1: she gets older, she actually they reconcile her and Rainier
- 18:18Speaker 1: actually reconcile. I guess old age mellowed him out a
- 18:21Speaker 1: lit bit. So September fourteenth, nineteen eighty two, and this
- 18:26Speaker 1: is where it gets somber. Grace and her youngest daughter,
- 18:30Speaker 1: Princess Sephanie basically were arguing over where Stephanie was to
- 18:34Speaker 1: go to the prestigious Institute of Fashion Design and Pilis
- 18:40Speaker 1: or race driving school with her then boyfriend paulman Filmondo. Now,
- 18:46Speaker 1: so they're filling up the car with you know gowns
- 18:49Speaker 1: and outfits and bags and all their holiday stuff that
- 18:52Speaker 1: they had, and they realized that once they filled up
- 18:54Speaker 1: the car, there isn't space for Grace the princess, and
- 18:58Speaker 1: then the driver. So Grace is like, you know what,
- 19:01Speaker 1: I'll do it, I'll drive. It's fine instead of maybe
- 19:04Speaker 1: taking some stuff out and sending it later but whenever, Okay,
- 19:06Speaker 1: do your own thing. And it's basically what's supposed to
- 19:10Speaker 1: be like a thirty five minute drive. So they're going
- 19:13Speaker 1: back to Monaco from their their vacation residents. So ten
- 19:18Speaker 1: minutes into the journey, they're heading down this narrow, winding
- 19:22Speaker 1: road and it's leading out of the village of Letter B.
- 19:25Speaker 1: They're they're in this brown landover and she's basically Grace
- 19:30Speaker 1: has been learning what a headache all day, but you know,
- 19:33Speaker 1: so there's a hairpin turn and the car basically jerks
- 19:39Speaker 1: back and forth and the sides are scraping on the mountain,
- 19:43Speaker 1: and so the car behind blasts the horn and there's
- 19:47Speaker 1: the next carve after it called the Devil's Curse. Oh spooky,
- 19:51Speaker 1: and the car just like suddenly accelerates and to like
- 19:54Speaker 1: sixty miles per hour and just flies over the edge,
- 19:58Speaker 1: going over tree tops and and rolling down an embankment
- 20:02Speaker 1: and just smashes into a tree at the bottom and
- 20:05Speaker 1: rolls onto a pile of rocks. So it basically crushes
- 20:08Speaker 1: the passenger side door and the roof, and neither passengers
- 20:12Speaker 1: are in a seat beltze, so Stephanie and Grace are
- 20:16Speaker 1: just bollocked around the car. So Stephanie manages to climb out,
- 20:21Speaker 1: the climb out the driver's side because of every other
- 20:26Speaker 1: option is just crushed and she's like hysterical and sobbing,
- 20:31Speaker 1: and the ambulance crew has to pull has to pull
- 20:34Speaker 1: Grace from it. The legend is that this is the
- 20:37Speaker 1: same road used in to catch a thief. It's not,
- 20:41Speaker 1: it's actually we bit, actually I got like a good
- 20:44Speaker 1: bit of part. Stephanie basically gets pulled out and Grace
- 20:50Speaker 1: has been thrown into the back. This is why some
- 20:53Speaker 1: people think that Stephanie was the one who was driving,
- 20:55Speaker 1: because she was behind because she got out the driver's side,
- 20:58Speaker 1: but there was no other way to get out of
- 20:59Speaker 1: the car, you know. So Grace gets taken to hospital
- 21:03Speaker 1: in Monaco, and the story goes if she'd been taken
- 21:09Speaker 1: to a hospital over in Nice, which had better equipment
- 21:12Speaker 1: that she may have had a better chance of surviving.
- 21:16Speaker 1: But by the time the doctors realized she was in
- 21:19Speaker 1: there was like how bad the brain damage was from
- 21:22Speaker 1: just being smashed around the car, like she had a
- 21:25Speaker 1: reversible coma. There was nothing they could do after the
- 21:29Speaker 1: car was the car itself was like the landover was
- 21:32Speaker 1: like physically crushed into a metal cube and then just
- 21:34Speaker 1: dropped into the ocean, just gotte any. On the eighteenth
- 21:41Speaker 1: gas Kelly is buried and the funeral is attended by
- 21:46Speaker 1: the King and Queen of Belgium, the Queen of Spain,
- 21:50Speaker 1: the Prince of Speeding, the Prince Speeding, the Prince of Sweden,
- 21:55Speaker 1: Prince Philip of Luchtenstein, Nancy Reagan, Princess Diana, and Carrie
- 22:02Speaker 1: Grant showed up. When they put her on her coffin
- 22:05Speaker 1: there they they tried to cover up her head wounds
- 22:10Speaker 1: with like this big yellow wig and it's it's ridiculous.
- 22:15Speaker 1: But Stephanie couldn't attend, if you know, because because of
