- 0:00Speaker 1: Section twenty two of the Heart of the New Thought
- 0:05Speaker 1: by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. This LibriVox recording is in the
- 0:10Speaker 1: public domain wisdom. A great many people are attracted to
- 0:18Speaker 1: the New Thought of the day by its declaration of
- 0:22Speaker 1: our right to material wealth, and by its claim that
- 0:27Speaker 1: the mind of man can create, command, and control conditions
- 0:32Speaker 1: which produce wealth. There is no question concerning the truth
- 0:38Speaker 1: of this claim. But wo unto him who cultivates his
- 0:44Speaker 1: mental and spiritual powers only for this purpose, his gold
- 0:51Speaker 1: shall turn to dross, his pleasure to dead sea fruit.
- 0:56Speaker 1: He shall be as one who drags a beautiful garment
- 1:00Speaker 1: through the mud of the streets, And while clothed in
- 1:04Speaker 1: purple and fine linen, is yet a repulsive object. Into
- 1:09Speaker 1: the great scheme of existence, as first conceived by the Creator,
- 1:15Speaker 1: money did not enter. He made this beautiful universe, and
- 1:21Speaker 1: all that it contains was meant for the enjoyment of
- 1:26Speaker 1: his creatures. There was no millionaire and no proper soul
- 1:31Speaker 1: created by God. Each soul contains the spark of the
- 1:37Speaker 1: divine Spirit, and by the realization of that spark and
- 1:42Speaker 1: all it means, whatever is desired by mortal man may
- 1:46Speaker 1: come to him. But Wise is he who remembers the injunction.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Seek first the kingdom of Heaven, and all other things
- 1:57Speaker 1: shall be added unto you. Wise is he who understands
- 2:03Speaker 1: the meaning of the words unto him that hath more
- 2:07Speaker 1: shall be given. Not until you obtain the faculty of
- 2:13Speaker 1: being happy through your spiritual and mental faculties, independent of
- 2:18Speaker 1: material conditions. Not until you learn to value wealth only
- 2:24Speaker 1: as a means of helpfulness, can you safely turn your
- 2:28Speaker 1: powers of concentration upon the idea of opulence. To demand,
- 2:34Speaker 1: assert and command wealth for its mere sensual benefits. To
- 2:39Speaker 1: focus your mind upon it because you desire to shine, lead,
- 2:44Speaker 1: and triumph, is to play spiritual football with spiritual dynamite.
- 2:50Speaker 1: You may obtain what you seek. You may accumulate riches,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but at the cost of all that is worth living.
- 2:58Speaker 1: For the merely ignorant or stupid or holy material man
- 3:04Speaker 1: who stumbles into a fortune through inheritance, dogged, persistent industry,
- 3:11Speaker 1: or chance, may enjoy it in his own fashion and
- 3:15Speaker 1: do no harm in the world. But the man who knows,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and who has developed his spiritual powers only for the
- 3:24Speaker 1: purpose of commanding material gain, might better have a millstone
- 3:30Speaker 1: tied about his neck, for he makes himself a spiritual outcast,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and his money shall never bring him happiness. Make therefore
- 3:41Speaker 1: your assertion of opulence the last in your list. As
- 3:45Speaker 1: you make love first, call unto yourself spiritual insight, absolute unselfishness,
- 3:54Speaker 1: desire for universal good, wisdom, justice and usefulness, and of
- 4:00Speaker 1: all opulence. Think of yourself as possessed of all these
- 4:05Speaker 1: qualities before you picture financial independence. For without love for
- 4:11Speaker 1: your kind, without the desire for usefulness, and the spiritual
- 4:15Speaker 1: insight and the wisdom to be just before being generous,
- 4:20Speaker 1: your money would bring you only temporary pleasure and would
- 4:25Speaker 1: do the world no good. Neither should you labor under
- 4:31Speaker 1: the impression that God's work is lying undone, because you
- 4:36Speaker 1: have no fortune to command and wisely distribute where most needed.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Rest assured if you do the work which lies nearest
- 4:46Speaker 1: to you, relieve such distress as is possible to you,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and keep your faith in the ultimate justice of God's ways,
- 4:56Speaker 1: that the world will move on and humanity will slowly
- 5:00Speaker 1: at in its destined goal, even if you never become
- 5:04Speaker 1: a millionaire. End of Section twenty two
