- 0:17for how to climb out of the pit of depression.
- 0:21These are practical tools that you can use right now to
- 0:25get out of that pit. Welcome to the
- 0:29Daily Audio Torah. Today is August 15th. Now let's
- 0:33continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in one year.
- 0:37This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old Testament and
- 0:41for the New Testament.
- 0:45Deuteronomy 7:1-11.
- 0:49When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are about to enter
- 0:52and occupy, he will clear away many nations ahead of you.
- 0:56The Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites,
- 0:59Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
- 1:04These 7 nations are greater and more numerous than you.
- 1:09When the Lord your God hands these nations over to you and
- 1:12you conquer them, you must completely destroy them.
- 1:16Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy.
- 1:21You must not intermarry with them. Do not let your daughters
- 1:25and sons marry their sons and daughters. For they will lead
- 1:29your children away from Me to worship other gods. Then the
- 1:33anger of the Lord will burn against you, and He will quickly destroy you.
- 1:38This is what you must do: You must break down their pagan
- 1:42altars and shatter their sacred pillars. Cut down their Asherah
- 1:46poles and burn their idols. For you are a holy people who belong to
- 1:50the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has
- 1:54chosen you to be His own special treasure.
- 1:59The Lord did not set His heart on you and choose you because
- 2:03you were more numerous than other nations, for you were the smallest
- 2:07of all nations. Rather, it was simply that
- 2:11the Lord loves you and He was keeping an oath it sworn to
- 2:15your ancestors. That is why the Lord rescued you with such a
- 2:19strong hand from your slavery and
- 2:23from the oppressive hand of Pharaoh the king of Egypt.
- 2:26Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God.
- 2:31He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for
- 2:34a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing
- 2:38love on those who love him and obey his commands.
- 2:43But He does not hesitate to punish and destroy those
- 2:47who reject Him.
- 2:50Therefore, you must obey all these commands,
- 2:53decrees, and regulations I am giving you today.
- 3:02Nehemiah 9:22-10:39.
- 3:07Then You, the Lord, helped our ancestors conquer great
- 3:11kingdoms and many nations, and You placed Your people in every
- 3:14corner of the land. They completely took over the land of King
- 3:18Sihon of Heshbon and the land of King Og of Bashan.
- 3:23You made their descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and
- 3:26brought them into the land You had promised to their ancestors.
- 3:31They went in and took possession of the land. You subdued whole nations
- 3:35before them. Even the kings and the Canaanites
- 3:38who inhabited the land were powerless. Your people could deal
- 3:42with them as they pleased. Our ancestors captured fortified
- 3:46cities and fertile land. They took over houses
- 3:50full of good things, with cisterns already dug, and vineyards and
- 3:53olive groves and orchards in abundance. So they
- 3:57ate until they were full and grew fat and
- 4:00enjoyed themselves in all Your blessings. But despite
- 4:04all this, they were disobedient and rebelled against You.
- 4:08They threw away Your Law, they killed the prophets who encouraged
- 4:11them to return to You, and they committed terrible blasphemies.
- 4:16So You handed them over to their enemies. But in their time of
- 4:20trouble they cried to You, and You heard them from heaven.
- 4:24In great mercy You sent them deliverers who rescued them from their
- 4:28enemies. But when all was going well,
- 4:31Your people turned to sin again, and once more You let Your
- 4:37Their enemies conquer them. Yet, whenever Your people cried to You again for help,
- 4:40You listened once more from heaven. In Your wonderful mercy,
- 4:44You rescued them repeatedly. You warned them
- 4:48to return to Your Law, but they became proud and
- 4:52obstinate and disobeyed Your commands. They did not follow
- 4:56Your regulations by which people will find life if
- 5:00only they obey. They stubbornly turned their
- 5:04backs on You and refused to listen. In Your love,
- 5:07You were patient with them for many years. You sent
- 5:11Your Spirit who, through the prophets, warned them about their sins.
- 5:16But still, they wouldn't listen. So once
- 5:20again, You allowed the pagan inhabitants of the land to conquer them.
- 5:25But in Your great mercy, You did not destroy them completely
- 5:29or abandon them forever. What a gracious and merciful God
- 5:34You are! And now, our God, the great and mighty and
- 5:38awesome God who keeps His covenant of unfailing love,
- 5:43do not let all the hardships we have suffered be as nothing to
- 5:47You. Great trouble has come upon us and upon our kings
- 5:50and princes and priests and prophets and ancestors,
- 5:54From the days when the kings of Assyria first triumphed
- 5:57over us until now. Every time You punished us,
- 6:01You were being just. We have sinned greatly, and You gave
- 6:05us only what we deserved. Our kings,
- 6:08princes, priests, and ancestors did not obey Your Law or
- 6:12listen to Your commands and solemn warnings.
- 6:15Even while they had their own kingdom, they did not serve You, even though
- 6:19You showered Your goodness on them. You gave them a large,
- 6:23fertile land, but they refused to turn from their wickedness.
- 6:27So now, today, we are slaves here in the land of plenty
- 6:31that You gave to our ancestors. We are slaves among all this
- 6:35abundance. The lush produce of this land piles
- 6:38up in the hands of the kings whom You have set over us because
- 6:42of our sins. They have power over us and our cattle.
- 6:46We serve them at their pleasure, and we are in great misery.
- 6:51Yet, in spite of all this, we are making a solemn promise
- 6:54and putting it in writing. On this sealed document are
- 6:58the names of our princes and Levites and priests. The document was
- 7:02ratified and sealed with the following names: Nehemiah
- 7:07the governor, son of Hakaliah. The priests who signed were Zadakiah,
- 7:11Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah,
- 7:14Pashhur, Amariah, Melchijah,
- 7:17Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch, Harim,
- 7:20Meremoth, Obadiah, Daniel,
- 7:24Ginnathon, Baruch, Meshullam, Abijah,
- 7:27Midjimam, Maziach, Bilgai, and Shemaiah.
- 7:32These were the priests. The Levites who signed were Jeshua
- 7:37son of Azaniah, Binnui from the family of Henadad,
- 7:41Hadmiel, and their fellow Levites, Shebaniah,
- 7:44Hodiah, Khalita, Pelaiah, Hanan,
- 7:47Micah, Rehob, Hashabiah, Zakur,
- 7:51Sharabiah, Shebaniah, Hodiah, Bani, and Beninu.
- 7:56The leaders who signed were Parosh,
- 7:58Pahath-moab, Elam, Zattu,
- 8:01Bani, Buni, Azgad, Bebai,
- 8:05Adonijah, Bigvai, Adeen, Ater,
- 8:08Hezekiah, Azur, Hodiah, Hashum,
- 8:11Bezaiah, Hariph, Ennathoth, Nebai,
- 8:15Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezer,
- 8:18Meshazzabel, Zadok, Jedua,
- 8:21Pelatiah, Hanan, Aniah, Hoshea,
- 8:25Hananiah, Hashub, Hallohesh, Pilha,
- 8:29Shobek, Rehum, Hashabnah,
- 8:32Maaseiah, Ahiah, Hanan, Enan,
- 8:35Malluch, Harim, and Bana. The rest of the
- 8:39people— the priests, Levites, gatekeepers,
- 8:41singers, Temple servants, and all who had separated themselves from
- 8:45the pagan people of the land in order to serve God,
- 8:49and who were old enough to understand— now all heartily
- 8:53bound themselves with an oath. They vowed to
- 8:57accept the curse of God if they failed to obey the Law of God as
- 9:00issued by His servant Moses. They solemnly promised
- 9:05to carefully follow all the commands, laws, and regulations
- 9:09of the Lord their God. We promise not to let our daughters
- 9:12marry the pagan people of the land, nor to let our sons
- 9:16marry their daughters. We further promise that if the people
- 9:20of the land should bring any merchandise or grain to be sold
- 9:23on the Sabbath or on any other holy day,
- 9:27we will refuse to buy it. And we promise not
- 9:31to do any work every 7th year and to cancel the
- 9:34debts owed to us by other Jews. In addition,
- 9:39we promise to obey the command to pay the annual Temple tax
- 9:42of an 8th of an ounce of silver, so that there will be enough
- 9:46money to care for the Temple of our God.
- 9:49This will provide for the Bread of the Presence, for the regular grain
- 9:53offerings and burnt offerings, for the offerings on the Sabbaths,
- 9:56the New Moon celebrations, and the annual festivals.
- 10:00For the holy offerings and for the sin offerings to make atonement
- 10:04for Israel. It will also provide for the other items necessary
- 10:08for the work of the Temple of our God. We have cast sacred
- 10:12lots to determine when, at regular times each year,
- 10:16the families of the priests, Levites, and the common people should
- 10:20bring wood to God's Temple to be burned on the
- 10:23altar of the Lord our God as required in the Law.
- 10:27We promise always to bring the first part of every harvest
- 10:31to the Lord's Temple, whether it be a crop from the
- 10:35soil or from our fruit trees. We agree to give to God our
- 10:38oldest sons and the firstborn of all our herds and flocks,
- 10:42just as the Law requires. We will present them to the
- 10:46priests who minister in the Temple of our God. We will store the
- 10:50produce in the storerooms of the Temple of our God.
- 10:53We will bring the best of our flour and other grain offerings,
- 10:57the best of our fruit, and the best of our new wine and olive
- 11:00oil. And we promise to bring to the Levites a
- 11:0510th of everything our land produces, for it is the Levites
- 11:09who collect the tithes in all our rural towns. A priest,
- 11:13a descendant of Aaron, will be with the Levites as they receive
- 11:16these tithes, and a 10th of all that is collected
- 11:20as tithes will be delivered by the Levites to the Temple of our God and
- 11:24placed in the storerooms. The people and the Levites must
- 11:28bring these offerings of grain, new wine, and olive
- 11:32oil to the Temple and place them in the sacred containers near
- 11:36the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers. So we
- 11:39promise together not to neglect the Temple of
- 11:44our God.
- 11:481 Corinthians 9:19-10:13.
- 11:53This means I, Paul, am not bound to obey people just because
- 11:57they pay me. Yet I have become a servant of everyone so
- 12:01that I can bring them to Christ.
- 12:07When I am with the Jews, I become one of them so I can bring
- 12:10them to Christ. When I am with those who follow the Jewish
- 12:13laws, I do the same. Even though I am not subject to
- 12:17the Law, so that I can bring them to
- 12:21Christ. When I am with the Gentiles who do
- 12:25not have the Jewish Law, I fit in with them as much as I can.
- 12:29In this way I gain their confidence and bring them to Christ.
- 12:33But I do not discard the Law of God; I obey the
- 12:38Law of Christ. When I am with those who
- 12:42are oppressed, I share their oppression so that I might bring
- 12:46them to Christ. Yes, I try to find common
- 12:49ground with everyone so that I might bring them to
- 12:54Christ.
- 13:00I do all this to spread the Good News, and in doing so,
- 13:04I enjoy its blessings. Remember that
- 13:08in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets
- 13:12the prize. You also must run in such a way
- 13:15that you will win. All athletes practice strict
- 13:19self-control. They do it to win a prize that
- 13:23will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.
- 13:28So I run straight to the goal with purpose
- 13:31in every step. I am not like
- 13:35a boxer who misses his punches. I discipline my body like an
- 13:39athlete training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear
- 13:43that after preaching to others, I myself might be disqualified.
- 13:52I don't want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters, what happened to
- 13:55our ancestors in the wilderness long ago.
- 13:58God guided all of them by sending a cloud that moved along
- 14:02ahead of them. And He brought them all safely through the waters
- 14:06of the sea on dry ground. As followers
- 14:10of Moses, they were all baptized in the cloud and the sea,
- 14:14and all of them ate the same miraculous food, and all of them
- 14:18drank the same miraculous water. For they all drank from the miraculous
- 14:22rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ. Yet,
- 14:27after all this, God was not pleased with most of them, and He
- 14:31destroyed them in the wilderness. These events happened
- 14:35as a warning to us so that we could not crave evil things as
- 14:39they did, or worship idols as some of them did.
- 14:42For the Scriptures say, the people celebrated with feasting and
- 14:46drinking, and they indulged themselves in pagan revelry. And we must
- 14:51not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000
- 14:56of them to die in one day. Nor should we
- 14:59put Christ to the test, as some of them did and then died from
- 15:03snakebites. And don't grumble, as some of them did, for that is why
- 15:07God sent his angel of death to destroy them. All these events
- 15:11happened to them as examples for us. They were written
- 15:15down to warn us who live at the time when this age is drawing
- 15:19to a close. If you think you are standing strong,
- 15:23Be careful, for you too may fall into the same
- 15:26sin. But remember that the temptations
- 15:29that come into your life are no different from what others
- 15:33experience. And God is faithful. He will
- 15:36keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can't stand
- 15:41up against it. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so
- 15:46that you will not give in to it.
- 15:51Psalm 34:1-10.
- 15:55I will praise the Lord at all times; I will constantly
- 16:00speak His praises. I will boast only in the Lord.
- 16:04Let all who are discouraged take heart. Come,
- 16:07let us tell of the Lord's greatness; let us exalt His name
- 16:11together. I prayed to the Lord, and He answered me,
- 16:14freeing me from all my fears. Those who look to Him
- 16:18for help will be radiant with joy. No shadow of
- 16:21shame will darken their faces. I cried out to the
- 16:25Lord in my suffering, and He heard me. He set me free from all
- 16:30my fears. For the angel of the Lord guards all
- 16:33who fear Him, and He rescues them.
- 16:37Taste and see that the Lord is good.
- 16:41Oh, the joys of those who trust in Him.
- 16:45Let the Lord's people show Him reverence, for those who honor Him
- 16:50will have all they need. Even strong young lions sometimes
- 16:53go hungry, but those who trust in the Lord will never lack
- 16:58any good thing.
- 17:02Proverbs 21:13. Those who shut
- 17:06their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time.
- 17:10Of need. I want to speak to you today from our
- 17:13reading from 1 Corinthians chapter 9 and 10,
- 17:17and I want to open with a question.
- 17:20Have you ever struggled with depression?
- 17:24Being sad, discouraged,
- 17:28in a pit, hard to get out of bed in the morning?
- 17:31I want to talk to you about what the Scripture can teach us about how
- 17:35to get out of the pit of depression.
- 17:39And in 1 Corinthians chapter 9, Paul speaks about
- 17:45having purpose in life. He says in verse
- 17:4924, chapter 9, verse 24, remember that in a race
- 17:52everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize.
- 17:56You also must run in such a way
- 18:00that you will win. All athletes practice strict self-control.
- 18:05They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we
- 18:09do it for an eternal prize. So I run straight
- 18:13to the goal with purpose in every step.
- 18:18So what is the goal? The goal is we are running towards
- 18:22Jesus Christ. He is the one who initiates,
- 18:26who starts us in the race. He's with us every step
- 18:30of the way in the race. And He is with us when
- 18:34we cross the finish line. He is our goal,
- 18:39to be one with Christ, to see
- 18:44Him face-to-face, to step into the wedding supper of the Lamb,
- 18:48that we are His bride. He is our goal. But here's
- 18:52the key. He says, I run the race with purpose in every step.
- 18:57He also compares it to, I'm not like a boxer
- 19:01who misses his punches. Or if you were an archer and
- 19:05you had arrows in your quiver, you don't just send the arrows out with
- 19:09your bow willy-nilly in every random direction.
- 19:13There's a target, and you're aiming for the target.
- 19:16You're aiming for a bullseye. So one way out of
- 19:20the pit of depression is to seek the Lord and
- 19:24ask Him to give you His purpose, to give
- 19:28you His assignment. That you have an assignment,
- 19:32you have a mission, you have a task, you have purpose,
- 19:36and that brings meaning to your life.
- 19:39Now, it could be something simple, something small, that maybe
- 19:44his purpose for you is, I want you to be the very best father
- 19:48that you can be, or I want you to be the very best
- 19:52mother that you can be.
- 19:56It may be a short-term purpose. I want you to go on that
- 20:00missions trip to Mexico and serve and love on
- 20:04the people. It may be a longer-term purpose
- 20:08or mission. I want you to serve at
- 20:12your church in the children's ministry department
- 20:16and love on those children that are in your classroom.
- 20:21Whatever it is, you get it from Him. You don't just dream it
- 20:25up or drum it up or just decide willy-nilly. You seek the
- 20:29Lord and ask Him, Father, I need You
- 20:33to give me purpose. And often that purpose is very much
- 20:37wrapped up in serving others.
- 20:41Sometimes we get into a depression pit when we're focused on self.
- 20:46We get into self-pity, woe is me. We feel sorry for
- 20:50ourselves. Things didn't turn out the way we had hoped. And the more we
- 20:53focus on self, the more we can go deeper into that pit
- 20:57of depression. But when we start focusing on others
- 21:01and serving others, maybe serving at a food bank once a week,
- 21:05maybe an outreach to the homeless,
- 21:09whatever it might be, volunteering in some capacity,
- 21:13serving others, then the focus comes off of
- 21:17self and you become other-centered.
- 21:21So the other way out of depression is to practice an attitude
- 21:25of gratitude. You can get a notebook or a journal,
- 21:29and every day in that gratitude journal,
- 21:33write down 5 things that you are grateful and
- 21:36thankful to God for. Father God,
- 21:39today I'm thankful that I have my health. Father God,
- 21:43Father, today I am thankful for my family.
- 21:46Father, today I'm thankful for this beautiful day, the lovely weather,
- 21:50the blue skies, for the beauty of your
- 21:53creation. Father, I'm thankful for my sweet little dog
- 21:57Benji, who keeps company. He keeps me company,
- 22:00and he is just the sweetest, most loving little dog in
- 22:04the whole world. Just the small things.
- 22:07Father, thank you for the roses that are in bloom in my front yard.
- 22:13Just when you practice gratitude, it's hard to get into the negativity route,
- 22:18the thoughts of negativity. Take a
- 22:23break from reading the news. The news can be very depressing.
- 22:27Put on some worship music. Very, very uplifting
- 22:31when you are worshiping God, when you are focused on Him
- 22:35and on His nature and His character, His loving kindness,
- 22:39His patience, His goodness,
- 22:42His provision,
- 22:45how kind He is, how patient He is.
- 22:50So these are some tools for your toolbox for how to get out of
- 22:53the pit of depression.
- 22:57Have a blessed day and we'll see you tomorrow. Shalom.

- 24:21you. Adonai lift up his countenance upon you and
