- 1:11Speaker 3: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I am Brian and joining me once again for this
- 1:17Speaker 1: very special episode.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Is Sammy D. I don't know about all that. I
- 1:41Speaker 4: love throwing it to you and then being horrified by
- 1:44Speaker 4: whatever you did.
- 1:45Speaker 1: No, we got to start over.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Start over.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Start over. Let's do it again. Let's do it again.
- 1:50Speaker 1: That's part. Back to one. Back to one, everybody. I
- 1:53Speaker 1: can do it better. I can do it better, Brian.
- 1:56Speaker 4: That's part of it, though. You are your own crazy creation.
- 2:00Speaker 5: I'm going to beat myself up for the rest of
- 2:04Speaker 5: the day about how I introduce myself now.
- 2:06Speaker 6: Oh, my gosh.
- 2:07Speaker 4: No, you're always crazy.
- 2:08Speaker 1: It's cutting. You're cutting. I'm coming to cut my legs.
- 2:12Speaker 6: Anyway, all right.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Much like Dr. Frankenstein, you are your own creation. You
- 2:19Speaker 4: created this evil creature that comes on this show. We
- 2:24Speaker 4: may or may not murder people before you're done.
- 2:26Speaker 6: That's it.
- 2:27Speaker 5: I think if you have an alter ego, you've got
- 2:30Speaker 5: to buy a top hat, though. It seems to be
- 2:33Speaker 5: you've got to have a big stovepipe top hat.
- 2:37Speaker 3: This is very Dr.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Jekyll of you, all right.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah, well, that's what I'm saying. I think maybe that's
- 2:41Speaker 1: where it all came from.
- 2:42Speaker 5: But I've seen a lot of things where their alter
- 2:44Speaker 5: ego has a top hat.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Anyway, all right.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I expect to see you in a top hat next
- 2:51Speaker 4: time I see you.
- 2:52Speaker 5: Yeah, well, you'll know who I am by the top hat,
- 2:55Speaker 5: how to address me. If I'm wearing, oh man, that
- 2:57Speaker 5: was a celebrity stuff. If I'm wearing this top hat,
- 3:00Speaker 5: you will call me by this. If I don't have
- 3:03Speaker 5: the top hat on, I am just regular old John.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Send your people into the room first.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I'll send in my handlers. I have my handlers. They
- 3:12Speaker 1: come in. They prep everybody. It's John today. It's Sam today.
- 3:17Speaker 2: All right. Anyway. All right. Whatever. Whatever.
- 3:21Speaker 1: The show's already ruined.
- 3:22Speaker 5: The show's already ruined.
- 3:30Speaker 2: All right.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So, no, but we're good. We're good.
- 3:33Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 3:33Speaker 1: What were we talking about, Brian? You proceed. Proceed.
- 3:37Speaker 7: This is a very special episode, and I specifically picked you,
- 3:42Speaker 7: crazy as you may be, because I knew this, again,
- 3:47Speaker 7: I got to figure out who the other half of
- 3:49Speaker 7: this conversation will be.
- 3:51Speaker 4: So I've been planning this a very long time.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 3:55Speaker 4: And so as I got into this scenario where I
- 3:58Speaker 4: was like, oh, maybe I can hand off the other
- 4:01Speaker 4: part of this episode to myself because I started the
- 4:04Speaker 4: first one. As we get into this, we've got two
- 4:07Speaker 4: different interviews to get to first before we start our rambling.
- 4:12Speaker 4: But the first of it, I went back to find
- 4:16Speaker 4: the original session when I sat down. Because there were
- 4:20Speaker 4: several times in my life where I talked to Sid Haig,
- 4:24Speaker 4: and I've realized over the years, none of them were
- 4:26Speaker 4: all that long. But I think it was all so
- 4:29Speaker 4: very early for me. So my early interview segments were
- 4:32Speaker 4: like 10 minutes long of like, hey, here's this. Okay,
- 4:36Speaker 4: what else do I know? So it was a very
- 4:39Speaker 4: figuring it out type of process. Whereas now, the people
- 4:42Speaker 4: are just like, oh my God, stop talking. Why are
- 4:44Speaker 4: we still here? So at the time, early on, when
- 4:47Speaker 4: I first did the very first interview with him, like,
- 4:50Speaker 4: I don't even know if it was 10 minutes, the
- 4:52Speaker 4: whole thing all together. And then this was one that
- 4:55Speaker 4: was like, maybe, this was like the last time I
- 4:58Speaker 4: talked to him, actually. So I went back to find it.
- 5:01Speaker 4: It is from... September 2014. Wow. That was when I,
- 5:10Speaker 4: and I don't think it was the last time I
- 5:12Speaker 4: saw him. I think I saw him, that became its
- 5:14Speaker 4: own running joke of like, I saw Sid on such
- 5:18Speaker 4: a regular basis that the joke for us as a
- 5:21Speaker 4: cast was like, I see Sid Haig and Bill Moseley
- 5:24Speaker 4: more often than I see my extended family. Because literally
- 5:28Speaker 4: during the middle months out of the year, I would
- 5:30Speaker 4: be at a convention every other weekend. So like, and,
- 5:33Speaker 4: They worked so much on these that I've just been like, hey,
- 5:36Speaker 4: there's Sid again. All right.
- 5:37Speaker 8: See you later.
- 5:38Speaker 4: See you in two weeks. It's just I saw Sid
- 5:41Speaker 4: all the time, which is why I think I kept going, oh, well,
- 5:44Speaker 4: I still want to ask him about this movie. So
- 5:46Speaker 4: next time I run into him, I'll ask him about this.
- 5:48Speaker 4: So it became a recurring like a couple of times
- 5:51Speaker 4: over the years. I'd be like, let's go back. Let's
- 5:53Speaker 4: talk about this. And like, you know, eventually. We got
- 5:58Speaker 4: to this one, but more than anything, I will give
- 6:00Speaker 4: him credit. He was very patient because, you know, I
- 6:03Speaker 4: don't know that anyone wants to deal with me that often.
- 6:05Speaker 4: And like several times over the years, he sat down
- 6:08Speaker 4: and had a nice conversation with me. So bonus points
- 6:12Speaker 4: to Sid Haig for being the coolest guy ever.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 6:16Speaker 5: You got it documented before he, he, he's unsurped this
- 6:20Speaker 5: mortal coil.
- 6:21Speaker 1: That's not how you say it. Shuffled off this mortal coil.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Shuffled off. Yeah. Not unsurped.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Shuffled.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:26Speaker 1: He didn't unslurp anything.
- 6:27Speaker 4: That's only for mortal soup.
- 6:29Speaker 1: That's it. That's right. He unslurped this mortal soup.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Which kind of feels like that some days.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:36Speaker 4: But yeah, so that was as I got into the...
- 6:38Speaker 4: that i was like okay for for years i'd already
- 6:42Speaker 4: kind of been a fan of of this movie that
- 6:45Speaker 4: we're going to be talking about and um i i
- 6:48Speaker 4: wanted to once i realized i'm like oh wait that
- 6:51Speaker 4: because he he's so young he almost kind of looks
- 6:54Speaker 4: different once you're used to seeing him as the the
- 6:56Speaker 4: older version of him that had the big comeback so
- 6:58Speaker 4: like right you're like, oh, look, there he is as
- 7:01Speaker 4: a kid. So he's just out of college more or
- 7:04Speaker 4: less at this point. So he's pretty young in this.
- 7:07Speaker 4: But once I realized it was him, I was like, oh, well,
- 7:09Speaker 4: now I want to go talk to you about that.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Because other than that, everybody's talking to him about clowns
- 7:15Speaker 4: and all his later horror movies. But I'm like, this
- 7:18Speaker 4: is an old one that I want to drag out
- 7:20Speaker 4: and talk to him about. So I did specifically plan
- 7:23Speaker 4: a time and go and sit down. And we got
- 7:26Speaker 4: this interview that we're about to get to. And then
- 7:30Speaker 4: it kind of, just to set up the extended time
- 7:33Speaker 4: period here, then it just fell into this weird area
- 7:36Speaker 4: of like, I went back and found the episode where
- 7:39Speaker 4: I set it up and was like, oh, I just
- 7:41Speaker 4: talked to Sid today. At that point in that year,
- 7:44Speaker 4: I said, and we're doing a Spider Baby special episode,
- 7:47Speaker 4: just letting you guys know I recorded a thing. I
- 7:50Speaker 4: planted the flag right then. I'm like, we're doing an
- 7:53Speaker 4: episode for it. But then it sort of fell into
- 7:57Speaker 4: like a little time lapse of like trying to figure
- 7:59Speaker 4: out what else to do on that one. Cause I
- 8:01Speaker 4: just had that one short clip with Sid and like
- 8:04Speaker 4: had to figure out what else we were going to
- 8:06Speaker 4: do on the episode, who else was going to talk
- 8:07Speaker 4: about it type of stuff. And then again, real world,
- 8:11Speaker 4: I don't think it's a spoiler if you're listening to
- 8:13Speaker 4: this show, but Sid passed away. granted it was a
- 8:16Speaker 4: few years after but yeah yeah it went into like
- 8:19Speaker 4: a a period of i hadn't done anything with it
- 8:21Speaker 4: and then sid passed away and then it seemed really
- 8:24Speaker 4: weird to like the next week be like hey guess
- 8:26Speaker 4: what uh got to this recording with sid like that
- 8:28Speaker 4: seemed ghoulish even more than my normal mode so i
- 8:32Speaker 4: was like i don't want to do that so then
- 8:34Speaker 4: that kind of put it on the back burner for
- 8:36Speaker 4: that reason of like well i don't want to turn
- 8:38Speaker 4: around and do it right after he passed away because
- 8:40Speaker 4: that seems weird and But then it became a really
- 8:43Speaker 4: long period. And like, oh, well, now I don't want
- 8:46Speaker 4: to like never get to it. So every year or
- 8:48Speaker 4: so I'd be like, yeah, I still got that Sid interview.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I want to do the episode about Spider Baby. So
- 8:54Speaker 4: I kept sort of reminding myself, I want to get
- 8:57Speaker 4: to that. I want to get to that. And then
- 9:00Speaker 4: what sort of made me dust it off, I will
- 9:04Speaker 4: be coming to the next interview. And once I saw
- 9:07Speaker 4: Beverly was coming to a town near me, I was
- 9:10Speaker 4: just like, hey, I have wanted to talk to somebody
- 9:13Speaker 4: else involved in the movie. One of the three is
- 9:15Speaker 4: not around anymore. So like this, this is it. Like
- 9:17Speaker 4: this is my chance to have another piece to put
- 9:20Speaker 4: with the Sid interview and then, you know, put together
- 9:23Speaker 4: this whole Spider Baby episode. So that is sort of
- 9:27Speaker 4: what led us to this. And I think just to
- 9:31Speaker 4: kind of go ahead and jump into it, we should
- 9:33Speaker 4: go ahead and throw the Sid interview in right now.
- 9:37Speaker 4: The teased Sid interview that I sat down with him.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Many years ago. And again, it's not a long interview.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Most of mine weren't. And I will say, sorry for
- 9:48Speaker 4: the background noise. This one was at a convention, unfortunately.
- 9:53Speaker 4: And this also proves why, if you'll listen to stuff lately,
- 9:56Speaker 4: I don't really do stuff at conventions that much anymore because.
- 10:00Speaker 4: number one I find it annoying to bother them while
- 10:04Speaker 4: they're already doing they've got a lot of stuff going
- 10:06Speaker 4: on and I've done it more than I'm comfortable with
- 10:08Speaker 4: over the years But also, the sound is so bad.
- 10:11Speaker 4: And depending on what convention you're at, they won't shut
- 10:15Speaker 4: up on the loudspeakers, which you'll hear. So just in general,
- 10:19Speaker 4: you get a drone in those rooms that's terrible. And
- 10:21Speaker 4: then on top of that, there's weird background noise going on.
- 10:25Speaker 4: So it is what it is. But again, I'm just
- 10:28Speaker 4: glad that I have the audio from the time. So
- 10:31Speaker 4: I will take it and work with it. So there
- 10:33Speaker 4: we go. But I think he gets to the heart
- 10:36Speaker 4: of what made this movie so different for him. And
- 10:39Speaker 4: then part of why it sort of hung around afterwards
- 10:44Speaker 4: and became sort of the cult favorite that it was.
- 10:47Speaker 4: And then I left in, there was a snippet from
- 10:49Speaker 4: that old episode that was him sort of giving his
- 10:51Speaker 4: take on, on life. You know, I gave him a
- 10:54Speaker 4: sort of wrap up your career type of thing, which
- 10:57Speaker 4: I guess is also kind of ghoulish, you know, Since
- 10:59Speaker 4: he was sort of towards the end of his life.
- 11:01Speaker 4: But I left it in specifically on this because I
- 11:04Speaker 4: think it is very uplifting. And it tells you a
- 11:07Speaker 4: lot about Sid and how he looked at things, both
- 11:11Speaker 4: his career and life in general. And so, like, I
- 11:13Speaker 4: thought that was important to kind of leave in at
- 11:15Speaker 4: the end there of, like, him sort of sending you
- 11:18Speaker 4: off with the way that he approached his, you know,
- 11:23Speaker 4: acting as well as the rest of life.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 6: No.
- 11:26Speaker 3: No.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I agree.
- 11:27Speaker 5: After listening to it, you know, and everything, I was
- 11:29Speaker 5: going like, oh, that does, man, kind of charge you
- 11:32Speaker 5: up at the end.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:34Speaker 4: So I'm glad that's in there. So that was why.
- 11:36Speaker 4: And in addition to the Spider Baby wrap up, we've
- 11:39Speaker 4: also got a little bit of that at the end.
- 11:40Speaker 4: So this is Mr.
- 11:42Speaker 6: Sid Haig.
- 11:58Speaker 4: I was a huge fan of Spider-Baby. I kind of
- 12:00Speaker 4: wanted to go back in the history. What was the
- 12:03Speaker 4: first time you met Jack Hill? Because I know you're
- 12:05Speaker 4: in his student film at UCLA, aren't you?
- 12:08Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right. I got a call from one of
- 12:12Speaker 6: my teachers at the Pasadena Playhouse after I had graduated.
- 12:17Speaker 6: And Jack was having a tough time casting the lead
- 12:22Speaker 6: for his student film. So she said, get down there
- 12:26Speaker 6: and get the job. So I went down there and
- 12:29Speaker 6: I got the job. And Jack and I have been
- 12:32Speaker 6: friends and worked together since 1961. Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Is the host available anywhere?
- 12:41Speaker 6: The host is available as a companion disc on Switchblade Sisters.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Well, I guess going into Spider Baby, how did he
- 12:52Speaker 4: give you that script or how did that first come
- 12:54Speaker 4: into being?
- 12:55Speaker 6: He gave me a call and he said, do you
- 12:57Speaker 6: want to do this thing that I, you know, it's
- 12:59Speaker 6: a crazy, whacked out film. And I said, of course
- 13:03Speaker 6: I want to do it. And he said, it's strange
- 13:07Speaker 6: because the guy doesn't have any dialogue and that's because
- 13:11Speaker 6: he's regressing. And the older you get, you regress more
- 13:17Speaker 6: until you just become an animal. And I said, got
- 13:22Speaker 6: to do it. So, He wanted me to meet the
- 13:26Speaker 6: producers and everything. So I went down and met the producers.
- 13:29Speaker 6: And he said, you know, just do a couple of things,
- 13:32Speaker 6: something you think the character might do. And I was,
- 13:36Speaker 6: you know, there's no point of reference there, you know.
- 13:40Speaker 6: So I started sucking my thumb and playing with my
- 13:43Speaker 6: toes and all kinds of stuff. And I finished and
- 13:47Speaker 6: I looked at the producers and they had this look
- 13:49Speaker 6: on their face like, oh, my God, what did we
- 13:51Speaker 6: just do? So, but it all worked out.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Did he already have the look in mind for him?
- 13:57Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, because I had hair at that time, but
- 14:04Speaker 6: shaved it off, and there we go.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Well, and then I guess when did you find out
- 14:09Speaker 4: Lon Chaney Jr. was going to be involved?
- 14:13Speaker 6: I found out actually I guess maybe a week before
- 14:19Speaker 6: we started shooting, and that just jacked me up. Like crazy,
- 14:24Speaker 6: you know, because, I mean, as a kid, I used
- 14:26Speaker 6: to go watch all the Wolfman movies and all that stuff.
- 14:29Speaker 6: And the first two days, I was just in awe.
- 14:35Speaker 6: And then settled in, and we used to just sit
- 14:39Speaker 6: and talk for, you know, hours.
- 14:41Speaker 4: See, I mean, he was still kind of having problems
- 14:46Speaker 4: at that point. Was it something that he... you kind
- 14:49Speaker 4: of could tell was going on or I mean that
- 14:52Speaker 4: was towards the end for him I don't know was
- 14:54Speaker 4: was he still I was just trying to figure out
- 14:57Speaker 4: what you guys relationship was he sort of taking you
- 14:59Speaker 4: under his wing and giving you instructions as far as
- 15:02Speaker 4: the the professional end.
- 15:03Speaker 6: Of it yeah he was basically acting like a mentor
- 15:06Speaker 6: yeah and which was I mean you know what better
- 15:09Speaker 6: mentor could you have than you know somebody that's been
- 15:13Speaker 6: through everything that he had yeah and He had a
- 15:17Speaker 6: problem with alcoholism and stuff like that, but he wanted
- 15:20Speaker 6: to do this picture bad enough that he had them
- 15:26Speaker 6: put in the contract that he could not have a
- 15:29Speaker 6: drink while he was doing the film.
- 15:31Speaker 4: And who was there to keep track of that, Jack,
- 15:34Speaker 4: or everybody?
- 15:35Speaker 6: Everybody was just kind of looking, and he was cool.
- 15:39Speaker 6: There was some rumor that he... He liked oranges and
- 15:43Speaker 6: he was kind of spiking the oranges with vodka or something.
- 15:46Speaker 6: But I never saw that happen.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Well, then I guess what about working with the girls?
- 15:52Speaker 4: I guess Jill and Beverly both were really young at
- 15:54Speaker 4: that point. What was it like working with them?
- 15:57Speaker 6: Yeah. Beverly was like 20 years old, 22 years old,
- 16:03Speaker 6: something like that. And Jill actually lied about her age.
- 16:12Speaker 6: She said she was 18, but she was 17. Her
- 16:15Speaker 6: mother didn't even know she was doing that film. When
- 16:19Speaker 6: she left the house in the morning, she thought she
- 16:22Speaker 6: was going to school.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Wow. Yeah. She really wanted to make that movie.
- 16:26Speaker 6: Yeah. So there was that little element that we all
- 16:31Speaker 6: had to deal with. And you know, there's a lot of,
- 16:34Speaker 6: I mean, there's some kind of, sexual implications that go
- 16:39Speaker 6: along with that whole family. They're all screwed up. And, um, so, we, uh,
- 16:47Speaker 6: you know, we, we pulled through that and, uh, it
- 16:51Speaker 6: all worked out. And it, it's such a, a quirky, odd,
- 16:57Speaker 6: creepy kind of movie. And, and it's the only horror
- 17:01Speaker 6: film that I've really seen that there's not a drop
- 17:05Speaker 6: of blood.
- 17:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 17:06Speaker 4: But it's so creepy and weird. Yeah. I mean, at
- 17:11Speaker 4: the time, it had issues with, like, the producer going
- 17:14Speaker 4: bankrupt and the name changes. So how was it? I mean,
- 17:17Speaker 4: it wasn't received well because it had trouble getting distribution
- 17:20Speaker 4: at the time. So, I mean, how was it as
- 17:22Speaker 4: it unrolled with you guys kind of dealing with, you know,
- 17:24Speaker 4: people not even getting to see it, I guess, in
- 17:27Speaker 4: the beginning there?
- 17:28Speaker 6: Yeah. And that was disappointing. And, you know, Jack was
- 17:32Speaker 6: the one that had to deal with all of that.
- 17:34Speaker 6: But a guy named Johnny Legend happened to be in
- 17:39Speaker 6: New York. And there's all these cheap theaters on 42nd Street.
- 17:44Speaker 6: And he went in and the manager of the theater
- 17:47Speaker 6: tried to talk him out of seeing Spider Baby. He goes, no,
- 17:51Speaker 6: Lon Chaney Jr., man, he's cool. So he came in
- 17:55Speaker 6: and saw it. And then he got behind it and
- 17:58Speaker 6: started pushing for a release. And that's how it all happened.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Well, you've just kind of wrapped up. You've been doing
- 18:05Speaker 4: this for quite a while now. Midway, I mean, I
- 18:09Speaker 4: know I've heard you tell stories of your ups and
- 18:11Speaker 4: downs professionally over the years. Midway in, would you have
- 18:14Speaker 4: chosen something different? You know, midway in on the rough times,
- 18:17Speaker 4: were you like, I should have gotten to become a
- 18:19Speaker 4: carpenter or something? But I don't know. What is your
- 18:22Speaker 4: take on the long haul of being a performer?
- 18:25Speaker 6: Well, the thing is I had a passion for it, okay?
- 18:28Speaker 6: Was I happy with the kind of work that I
- 18:30Speaker 6: was being offered?
- 18:31Speaker 3: No.
- 18:32Speaker 6: But I was being offered work in something that I
- 18:37Speaker 6: love to do. And my message to everybody, and I
- 18:41Speaker 6: don't care if it's in show business or selling cars
- 18:45Speaker 6: or whatever, if you have a passion for it, then
- 18:50Speaker 6: you can't quit. You just have to keep going. Keep
- 18:53Speaker 6: your head high, keep moving forward, and eventually it'll all
- 18:58Speaker 6: come together.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Sir Sid Haig.
- 19:13Speaker 4: He should be knighted. We can do that after the fact.
- 19:18Speaker 4: He doesn't have to still be around. Sir Sid Haig.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 5: So I got something to say about that interview and everything.
- 19:29Speaker 5: So a personal connection to that is my father-in-law, who
- 19:38Speaker 5: lived with us for a while until his passing He
- 19:41Speaker 5: was actually an actor at the Pasadena Playhouse at the
- 19:46Speaker 5: same time as Sid.
- 19:48Speaker 2: And.
- 19:50Speaker 1: And he actually told a story of he knew.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Sid back then and remembers him getting a part in
- 20:01Speaker 5: a movie where they had to go out and get
- 20:05Speaker 5: Sid drunk and shave his head.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Which seems to be a running thing, because even in
- 20:11Speaker 4: this movie, he had the hair and they got rid
- 20:14Speaker 4: of it, so later it just became his signature thing
- 20:16Speaker 4: as he got older, but when he was young, he
- 20:19Speaker 4: had hair.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:21Speaker 4: But it seems to be a go-to for all his roles.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Yeah, so I think it was probably Spider-Baby that he
- 20:28Speaker 5: had gotten the role on and everything. And so, yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 5: it jogged my memory when Sid in the interview says,
- 20:36Speaker 5: Pasadena Playhouse, and.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I go like, oh my gosh, my father-in-law was talking
- 20:40Speaker 1: about it.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:42Speaker 5: And so, so anyway, you know, uh, so, uh, my father-in-law,
- 20:48Speaker 5: he was, Sid was in town for Dragon Con and
- 20:50Speaker 5: he goes like, uh, I think I might go down
- 20:53Speaker 5: there and see him.
- 20:54Speaker 1: And, uh, so he drives down to Atlanta and, uh,
- 20:57Speaker 1: goes up to Sid's booth and he.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Goes like, Sid, it's Paul. And Sid was like, you know,
- 21:03Speaker 5: who the hell are you?
- 21:04Speaker 4: And, I mean, it had been a few years.
- 21:10Speaker 1: It had been, what, you know, what, 40 years? Yeah, sure, sure. So,
- 21:15Speaker 1: you know, anyway. But it's kind of interesting, you know. No, no, no,
- 21:22Speaker 1: but you see the.
- 21:26Speaker 1: You know, I mainly, I had not seen Spider-Baby until
- 21:29Speaker 1: just recently.
- 21:30Speaker 5: So, you know, I just mainly knew Sid from like older,
- 21:34Speaker 5: you know, exploitation movies or something like that. And, you know,
- 21:37Speaker 5: but never really, you know, it was mainly from the
- 21:40Speaker 5: Rob Zombie stuff, you know? And so it's real interesting
- 21:43Speaker 5: to go back and see Spider-Baby and realize that really
- 21:47Speaker 5: is the whole reason he's in these Rob Zombie movies
- 21:50Speaker 5: is he's, he's such a, you know, Rob is, uh,
- 21:55Speaker 5: you know, just so enamored with spider baby. Uh, so
- 21:58Speaker 5: he wanted to get a person from it.
- 22:00Speaker 1: You know?
- 22:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 22:01Speaker 4: It started there. Well, and leading him to all these others.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Cause yeah, he leaves this movie and then does another
- 22:07Speaker 4: one with Jack Hill. And then like Jack Hill has
- 22:10Speaker 4: that same connection that leads him to all these other
- 22:12Speaker 4: weird B movies and horror movies and weird sci-fi he
- 22:15Speaker 4: went on to do. And like, so it's just sort
- 22:18Speaker 4: of domino effect after this movie of like, this is,
- 22:21Speaker 4: this is where you're going to be, man. This is
- 22:22Speaker 4: your crowd. Like, And he knew that and he embraced
- 22:26Speaker 4: it and he came to love it, you know, as
- 22:28Speaker 4: much as it was, I'm sure, a challenge to keep
- 22:31Speaker 4: your head above water financially. Like a lot of these
- 22:35Speaker 4: were big money jobs as he struggled through a lot
- 22:39Speaker 4: of decades there. But like he had a hell of
- 22:41Speaker 4: a career in the process.
- 22:42Speaker 2: So.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And you just see him everywhere.
- 22:44Speaker 5: You'll be watching a movie and you go, there's Sid
- 22:47Speaker 5: Haig walking by.
- 22:48Speaker 1: You're going, what the heck? I didn't even know he
- 22:50Speaker 1: was in this. What the hell is going on?
- 22:51Speaker 4: More than that, he worked on TV so steadily. You
- 22:56Speaker 4: needed a random tough guy in a movie from the
- 22:59Speaker 4: late 70s through the mid 80s. He was probably there.
- 23:03Speaker 4: He was a dude with a shaved head that got
- 23:05Speaker 4: in a fight with whoever the lead on this show is.
- 23:08Speaker 4: And like, there's just so many times when I'm just like, oh, look,
- 23:11Speaker 4: there's Sid. Like, I'll just be watching me TV with
- 23:14Speaker 4: the old man footage that I'm usually watching. And it's
- 23:17Speaker 4: just like, hey, look, there's Sid. That's it.
- 23:21Speaker 5: Yeah, and so, you know, you can say whatever you
- 23:23Speaker 5: want to say if you like the Rob Zombie movies
- 23:25Speaker 5: or not. You know, you got to give them props
- 23:27Speaker 5: for putting, you know, Bill Moseley and Sid Haig, like,
- 23:32Speaker 5: in the front of a movie franchise, you know?
- 23:37Speaker 4: That's what I've always said. It's like, regardless of what
- 23:39Speaker 4: I think about his movies... Right. He and I as
- 23:43Speaker 4: people have the exact same tastes.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Rob Zombie has the best taste because we like all
- 23:50Speaker 4: the same stuff. Yeah. So it's always weird sometimes when
- 23:54Speaker 4: even like I see one of the later movies and
- 23:55Speaker 4: I'm just like, I don't I don't know what he's
- 23:57Speaker 4: going for here. But like all of his references throughout,
- 24:01Speaker 4: I love.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Like we all love the same stuff. Yeah.
- 24:05Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 5: You know, I like what's happening here. I don't know
- 24:09Speaker 5: if I like the movie, but I like what's happening.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I like all these things that you're pulling from. I
- 24:14Speaker 1: like these things, right.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Because we all have the same, you know, core memories
- 24:19Speaker 4: that we grew up loving these cheesy things.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. That's right.
- 24:23Speaker 4: This is what led us here.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he just needs to turn the volume
- 24:28Speaker 1: down sometimes. Sometimes.
- 24:30Speaker 4: You know how rock stars are. Yeah, that's true.
- 24:32Speaker 1: He's too loud. I guess I'm too old and everything.
- 24:35Speaker 1: That's what it is. That's what it is. Oh, man. So, yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Cool interview. What I found fascinating from some of the
- 24:43Speaker 1: special features I watched was supposedly the sound.
- 24:50Speaker 5: There was like all these problems recording the production sound
- 24:54Speaker 5: during the movie, you know, and like generators in the
- 24:58Speaker 5: background and like all this other random noise and everything.
- 25:01Speaker 5: And so the version that you get now on a
- 25:04Speaker 5: DVD is a, the, the sound as the, the sound
- 25:08Speaker 5: mix has been cleaned up a lot, you know? So
- 25:12Speaker 5: supposedly they were able to like really fix a lot
- 25:14Speaker 5: of the problems that, you know, the, the, the random
- 25:17Speaker 5: background noise, you know, and, own spider baby that they
- 25:21Speaker 5: had and so it got a real professional mix for
- 25:26Speaker 5: the re-release so that's that's pretty awesome.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I bet it was very different if you were watching
- 25:31Speaker 4: it in like the in between years when it like
- 25:34Speaker 4: if some grindhouse got a hold of it and just
- 25:36Speaker 4: showed whatever physical copy got shipped to them one day
- 25:40Speaker 4: like how messy that print must have been and how
- 25:43Speaker 4: messed up the audio probably was and scenes that were
- 25:46Speaker 4: missing because i think they even talk about adding a
- 25:49Speaker 4: scene back in when the re-release happened so like right
- 25:52Speaker 4: it's yeah i bet it's a very different experience watching
- 25:55Speaker 4: it in the theater back in the day for the
- 25:57Speaker 4: few people as yeah you know we'll be discussing like
- 26:01Speaker 4: it right didn't get a huge response at the time
- 26:04Speaker 4: yeah a while before the the fan base caught up
- 26:07Speaker 4: with it so.
- 26:08Speaker 5: Definitely definitely yeah no they uh supposedly you know it
- 26:13Speaker 5: was just like a you know, if it showed on
- 26:15Speaker 5: TV was from a scratched up, beat up 16 millimeter
- 26:19Speaker 5: print of it that just looked terrible. And I think
- 26:22Speaker 5: that's my first, my first exposure to the movie was
- 26:27Speaker 5: actually on like a VHS. I had called a horrible horror,
- 26:34Speaker 5: which is like something you would get at a, like
- 26:37Speaker 5: at a drugstore, you know, when they had like VHS
- 26:39Speaker 5: racks and that was just one of the random cheap,
- 26:42Speaker 5: you know, made for the VHS market, where it was.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Or stuff that fell into public domain. It's where you
- 26:49Speaker 4: picked up every copy of Night of the Living Dead
- 26:51Speaker 4: over the years for $ 6 sitting next to the register
- 26:54Speaker 4: at Halloween.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Yeah, next to the freaking Skittles and the Twizzlers, you know,
- 26:59Speaker 1: and everything.
- 26:59Speaker 4: You're like, ooh, I do need a copy of, a
- 27:02Speaker 4: really bad copy of Night.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Of the Living Dead.
- 27:03Speaker 5: A terrible copy of Night of the Living Dead. Well,
- 27:06Speaker 5: this thing was like a collection of just clips.
- 27:09Speaker 1: From like cheesy.
- 27:11Speaker 5: be you know public domain horror movies stuff and live
- 27:14Speaker 5: and breathe you know basically basically and it was hosted
- 27:18Speaker 5: by that host zacherly you.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Know yeah yeah.
- 27:21Speaker 4: He was he was kind of the last old school
- 27:24Speaker 4: guy like i guess yeah it's been passed off to
- 27:26Speaker 4: spin gooley but sure really used to be like the
- 27:29Speaker 4: go-to old school leftover horror host.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Yeah absolutely absolutely And so this was just one of
- 27:37Speaker 5: the multiple movies on that, where they showed some clips from.
- 27:41Speaker 5: And I was going like, what the hell is this?
- 27:43Speaker 4: Which is a legit question.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:46Speaker 1: I was like, what?
- 27:47Speaker 5: You know, because it's like a highly featured Sid Haig, like,
- 27:52Speaker 5: you know, acting like a baby man.
- 27:54Speaker 1: And you're going like, what is baby man movie anyway?
- 27:58Speaker 1: You know? A masterpiece.
- 28:00Speaker 4: That's what it is.
- 28:01Speaker 1: A masterpiece.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Who knew?
- 28:03Speaker 2: Who knew?
- 28:03Speaker 6: You know?
- 28:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:05Speaker 4: The only other thing I was going to say as
- 28:06Speaker 4: a follow up, because at the time, back in the
- 28:09Speaker 4: olden days when I sat down with him, I did
- 28:11Speaker 4: ask him where the host was. If you buy the
- 28:14Speaker 4: special edition of Spider Baby, it also comes with a
- 28:17Speaker 4: version of the host on that disc. So I was
- 28:20Speaker 4: watching it myself a week or so ago. And it's
- 28:23Speaker 4: pretty awesome. Once again, it's cool seeing a young version
- 28:26Speaker 4: of Sid in this weird little like. homemade movie more
- 28:30Speaker 4: or less it's just his student film at the time
- 28:33Speaker 4: jack kill was putting this together and needed an actor
- 28:35Speaker 4: and that's how they came together was making this movie
- 28:38Speaker 4: the host so.
- 28:39Speaker 10: Yeah yeah yeah absolutely yeah i watched a little bit
- 28:42Speaker 10: of it i went out and bought the uh two
- 28:44Speaker 10: disc set too so and so all my movies i've
- 28:47Speaker 10: been buying lately are old well that one i got
- 28:49Speaker 10: before this was faster pussycat and then now this one
- 28:52Speaker 10: you know so I mean.
- 28:54Speaker 4: That's most of my purchases.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:56Speaker 4: Everything I'm getting, and I'll find, I just get suckered in.
- 28:59Speaker 4: I'm a sucker for physical media anyway, but specifically any
- 29:02Speaker 4: special edition version, which is how this happened and why
- 29:06Speaker 4: we're doing it now, because if you'll remember.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 29:08Speaker 4: We were going to do this episode, and then after
- 29:11Speaker 4: it was a couple of days in, I was like,
- 29:13Speaker 4: I think I'm going to go ahead and get that
- 29:14Speaker 4: special edition.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:15Speaker 4: And then I can lay into all these special features
- 29:19Speaker 4: and come into it with all this extra stuff that
- 29:21Speaker 4: we now hear about.
- 29:22Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 29:23Speaker 4: That's why we're doing it now instead of just after
- 29:25Speaker 4: I watched it, you know, the random streaming version that
- 29:27Speaker 4: I watched a couple of weeks back before.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 29:31Speaker 4: And then I suckered you into it. So you're welcome,
- 29:34Speaker 4: the people that make that Blu-ray, because now you've sold
- 29:36Speaker 4: two more copies. and absolutely i sold you on one
- 29:39Speaker 4: of them.
- 29:39Speaker 5: So yeah no i it was kind of a crappy
- 29:42Speaker 5: copy on amazon streaming and everything that i watched and
- 29:45Speaker 5: i was going like this all right so you know
- 29:48Speaker 5: spoilers i mean i was so impressed by this that
- 29:51Speaker 5: you know i was going like oh i'd like a
- 29:52Speaker 5: have a cleaned up copy you know a decent print
- 29:55Speaker 5: you know of this you know um So yeah, yeah,
- 29:58Speaker 5: I mean, it was, yeah, I'm glad I got it,
- 30:03Speaker 5: and I'm glad I got a good print, because, yeah,
- 30:06Speaker 5: it was a real revelation to me, watching this.
- 30:09Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:11Speaker 4: I am about to get into, I watched a cleaned-up
- 30:15Speaker 4: copy with.
- 30:16Speaker 9: Our next guest, but before we get out of this,
- 30:18Speaker 9: I will say that that wrap-up at the end, that his,
- 30:22Speaker 9: you know, his advice to all of us out there is, keep.
- 30:26Speaker 4: Going, keep your head high, keep moving forward. And eventually
- 30:30Speaker 4: it'll all come together.
- 30:31Speaker 1: That's it.
- 30:31Speaker 4: And I was like, that's just such a, an all encompassing,
- 30:34Speaker 4: like it's not even about the business. It's just kind
- 30:37Speaker 4: of your day-to-day life, man, is you just, you just
- 30:40Speaker 4: got to keep going. Like you just got to keep
- 30:42Speaker 4: moving forward and, and, you and I know it's rough.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:47Speaker 4: We have our discussions like this because they're therapy and
- 30:50Speaker 4: there's a lot going on in our lives. And like,
- 30:52Speaker 4: sometimes you just need to hear that. And like hearing
- 30:55Speaker 4: it from, from Sid, you know, he's, he's a hero
- 30:58Speaker 4: to all of us. So it's really nice to kind
- 31:01Speaker 4: of know, you know, even, even somebody as cool as
- 31:03Speaker 4: Sid had, had that, that, you know, sometimes you just,
- 31:06Speaker 4: it's a fight, but you got to get through it, man.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Yep.
- 31:09Speaker 5: Yep.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Everybody has to like, you know, he had been there,
- 31:14Speaker 1: He had to keep his head up. He had to
- 31:15Speaker 1: keep moving. And so, yeah, he had been there, and
- 31:17Speaker 1: he had done it, and, you know.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Eventually he was able to have some peace and some
- 31:21Speaker 5: recognition and some, well, you know, just be okay. You know,
- 31:25Speaker 5: it's kind of like this person who's been through war
- 31:27Speaker 5: and said, like, it's going to be all right.
- 31:29Speaker 1: You know, just got to keep walking forward.
- 31:32Speaker 4: And eventually, like, he found all that. That's why I
- 31:35Speaker 4: said earlier, like, the decades of fighting, because it really
- 31:39Speaker 4: wasn't until that comeback in the, like, 2000 you know
- 31:44Speaker 4: the very early yeah once he started with the rob
- 31:47Speaker 4: zombie stuff like that sort of flipped the switch and
- 31:49Speaker 4: it's like you know then he's in jackie brown and
- 31:52Speaker 4: he's in like all of this like he had that
- 31:54Speaker 4: little resurgence and then like then the convention world discovered
- 31:58Speaker 4: he was out there and like he from that point
- 32:00Speaker 4: on like everybody would line up and go see sid
- 32:04Speaker 4: and he was so cool and they all loved him
- 32:06Speaker 4: and like so he felt that love it just took
- 32:09Speaker 4: long time to get there you know it's like think
- 32:12Speaker 4: about all those years of working in an industry yeah
- 32:15Speaker 4: and just barely getting by for a lot of those
- 32:18Speaker 4: years and and to the point that he was finding
- 32:20Speaker 4: other careers midway in you know I remember talking to
- 32:23Speaker 4: him years ago about that of like you know you
- 32:25Speaker 4: just had to make do but I kept at it
- 32:27Speaker 4: and yeah still trying to make the make ends meet
- 32:31Speaker 4: and pay the bills and like get on to the
- 32:33Speaker 4: next thing and like he stayed with it but yeah,
- 32:37Speaker 4: it took him that long before the, the fan base
- 32:39Speaker 4: caught up and was like, Oh no, we love you.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Like it just, so I'm so glad he got to
- 32:45Speaker 4: it because that's the sad thing that we'll be covering
- 32:48Speaker 4: soon is that, you know, several people in the cast
- 32:50Speaker 4: didn't really get to have that moment. So I really
- 32:53Speaker 4: am glad that, that I'm glad that, that Sid got
- 32:56Speaker 4: to have that. And then we, we definitely talk about
- 32:58Speaker 4: that with our next guest. So I did, uh, as
- 33:02Speaker 4: I said, uh, Beverly Washburn was coming to town and
- 33:05Speaker 4: I was like, Oh, that's, that's awesome. That's the reason
- 33:08Speaker 4: I want to start getting this going again and put
- 33:11Speaker 4: everything together. So, um, ended up sitting down with her.
- 33:15Speaker 4: This wasn't, and I've said earlier with, with, uh, you know,
- 33:18Speaker 4: celebrities being patient with me. Um, I always assume they're like,
- 33:23Speaker 4: all right, let's get this over with. And so we,
- 33:25Speaker 4: we sat down and we, we were, we had to,
- 33:27Speaker 4: find a good place. Cause once again, it's noisy everywhere.
- 33:31Speaker 4: This is my fight with audio is just, where can
- 33:33Speaker 4: I be away from all this noise? So the best
- 33:36Speaker 4: option I found was outside actually. Cause in the, in
- 33:39Speaker 4: the whole, it was like a hotel and all these
- 33:42Speaker 4: big rooms and people milling around everywhere. I was like, Oh,
- 33:45Speaker 4: this is terrible. But there was like a little outside
- 33:48Speaker 4: area that was like a courtyard more or less and
- 33:51Speaker 4: had tables set up and some chairs and like, it
- 33:54Speaker 4: was just late enough in the day. It wasn't hot.
- 33:57Speaker 4: And I was like, all right, let's try this. So
- 33:59Speaker 4: I went and set everything up and, um, I assumed again, we,
- 34:03Speaker 4: we would just kind of sit there long enough. And like, I,
- 34:06Speaker 4: I tried to give a, a get out of jail
- 34:08Speaker 4: free card. I was like, you know, we can just
- 34:10Speaker 4: kind of cover this and wrap it up quickly. And
- 34:13Speaker 4: she seemed okay with that. And then we got into
- 34:15Speaker 4: it and we do this session, which is, which is
- 34:18Speaker 4: a very, a really nice discussion about the movie. Um,
- 34:21Speaker 4: But this is what's interesting and what you don't, I
- 34:23Speaker 4: won't leave, you know, audio running for the whole rest
- 34:25Speaker 4: of the time. But we then, after we were done,
- 34:28Speaker 4: I was just like, okay, I assumed I'm just going
- 34:31Speaker 4: to pack it up and go. And she just kind
- 34:33Speaker 4: of hung out there.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Nice.
- 34:35Speaker 4: And this was amazing to me. And this is like
- 34:38Speaker 4: when I wonder, because it's such an ordeal trying to
- 34:40Speaker 4: put these shows together sometimes, that I ask myself, why
- 34:43Speaker 4: do I do this? I give myself so much work
- 34:47Speaker 4: putting these episodes together. And most of the time, I
- 34:50Speaker 4: don't know that anybody cares. But I got to that
- 34:53Speaker 4: moment and I was like, we sat there for a
- 34:56Speaker 4: really long time after the interview. And we talked about
- 34:59Speaker 4: her life now. And we talked about just the convention
- 35:03Speaker 4: scene and like, you know, what. what the industry has
- 35:07Speaker 4: been like over these years since she's, you know, she's
- 35:09Speaker 4: still kind of working, but like, you know, when she
- 35:12Speaker 4: was working, you know, a lot back in the day
- 35:14Speaker 4: and what she's been doing in the years since. And like,
- 35:17Speaker 4: it just became a really long, relaxed conversation sitting outside.
- 35:23Speaker 4: And it was nice. Amazing. And I'm like, so I'm
- 35:26Speaker 4: so thankful to her for being cool and hanging out
- 35:29Speaker 4: with me, but also just the, that's the reason I'm
- 35:32Speaker 4: doing this. Like I have those moments and I'm like, yes,
- 35:35Speaker 4: I want the episode to come together and we can
- 35:37Speaker 4: do these cool things. But at the same time, every
- 35:40Speaker 4: once in a while, I have those moments that I'm
- 35:42Speaker 4: just like, this person was awesome. And I got to
- 35:45Speaker 4: be here because of the show. And like, so that's
- 35:48Speaker 4: why I keep at it. Like I hit those moments
- 35:51Speaker 4: every once in a while. And Beverly was one of those.
- 35:53Speaker 4: And I thank you to her because yeah, this, this
- 35:56Speaker 4: interview is great. And she was awesome to hang out
- 35:59Speaker 4: with even after the interview. So. I will go to
- 36:03Speaker 4: that courtyard right now, and we will welcome Beverly on
- 36:08Speaker 4: right now. So you'd actually been acting for quite a
- 36:22Speaker 4: while by the time you got to Spider Baby, so
- 36:24Speaker 4: I guess in reference to that, my question is, How
- 36:29Speaker 4: did it come to you, I guess, as a script first?
- 36:31Speaker 4: And then what did you think of it? Because it's
- 36:34Speaker 4: a little different than what you'd been doing when.
- 36:35Speaker 1: You were younger.
- 36:36Speaker 11: Yes, it is very different than anything I've done. That's
- 36:39Speaker 11: why I was so excited to get the part. I
- 36:42Speaker 11: had never done that kind of a role because I
- 36:45Speaker 11: had done things like, you know, Old Yeller and Superman
- 36:50Speaker 11: and the Mole Man and Lone Ranger and Wagon Train
- 36:53Speaker 11: and Leave it to Beaver.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Epic stuff.
- 36:54Speaker 11: Things like that. And so I got cast in a
- 36:58Speaker 11: very strange way. I happened to be, like usually when
- 37:03Speaker 11: you get a part, you have an agent. And they'll
- 37:05Speaker 11: call you and they say, you know, we've got an
- 37:07Speaker 11: audition for you to go read for the role or whatever.
- 37:10Speaker 11: And so this one time I was grocery shopping. And
- 37:16Speaker 11: it seemed like every time I turned down an aisle,
- 37:18Speaker 11: this man was kind of like following me or something.
- 37:22Speaker 11: And I got a little nervous. And this went on
- 37:24Speaker 11: for a few minutes. And then he came up to me.
- 37:28Speaker 11: And he said, excuse me, I'm not stalking you or anything.
- 37:32Speaker 11: You look familiar. You're an actress, right? And I said, yes.
- 37:36Speaker 11: And he said, well, I'm getting ready to do a film.
- 37:40Speaker 11: And at the time, it was going to be called
- 37:42Speaker 11: The Cannibal Orgy. And right off the bat, it's like, what?
- 37:45Speaker 4: That line is in there, so it's not out of
- 37:47Speaker 4: the blue. Just a little weird.
- 37:49Speaker 11: And so I thought it sounded kind of strange. And
- 37:51Speaker 11: he said, we're looking to cast a couple of roles,
- 37:56Speaker 11: and I think you might be right for one of
- 37:58Speaker 11: the girls, would you be interested? And I thought, well,
- 38:01Speaker 11: first of all, the cannibal orgy sort of threw me off.
- 38:07Speaker 11: And so he said, well, let me give you all
- 38:08Speaker 11: the information and have your agent call. So then when
- 38:13Speaker 11: he said that, I thought, well, maybe it's legitimate because
- 38:15Speaker 11: it wasn't like he said, you know, come up to
- 38:17Speaker 11: my hotel room or something. And so when I got
- 38:21Speaker 11: home the next, you know, the next day I called
- 38:23Speaker 11: my agent and I said, this is weird, but somebody
- 38:26Speaker 11: at the Ralph's grocery store was there and he told
- 38:30Speaker 11: me they're casting a film and that I should call
- 38:33Speaker 11: you and find out about it. So I gave him
- 38:36Speaker 11: the information that this guy, Bart Patton, who was, um,
- 38:39Speaker 11: in the film and not in the film, he was
- 38:41Speaker 11: like one of the, not a producer. He was something rather,
- 38:47Speaker 11: I don't know, in production. Anyway, he was a really
- 38:49Speaker 11: nice guy. So, my agent checked on it and he
- 38:53Speaker 11: called me back and he goes, yeah, it's legitimate. They're casting.
- 38:56Speaker 11: So he said, you know, your audition time, whatever it was,
- 39:00Speaker 11: a Thursday or something. So he said, go there. They
- 39:04Speaker 11: want you to read for the role. So when I
- 39:06Speaker 11: went there, there were like so many girls in the
- 39:09Speaker 11: lobby waiting to go in and read. And, um, so
- 39:13Speaker 11: they brought us, it's called the sides, which is, it's
- 39:16Speaker 11: not the whole script. Cause they're not going to give
- 39:18Speaker 11: you the whole script then, but they give you like,
- 39:21Speaker 11: two or three scenes to read and they let you
- 39:24Speaker 11: look it over while you're waiting and then you go
- 39:27Speaker 11: in and read. So I looked at the part and
- 39:29Speaker 11: I went in and they brought us in two at
- 39:31Speaker 11: a time. And then they would say, okay, you can
- 39:34Speaker 11: stay and you go, you stay, you go. And each
- 39:37Speaker 11: time I kept making the cut, I was excited because
- 39:40Speaker 11: they would tell the other girl to go and I
- 39:42Speaker 11: could stay. So this went on for quite a while.
- 39:44Speaker 11: And then finally they came to me and they said, okay,
- 39:47Speaker 11: you can go. And I was disappointed because I thought
- 39:50Speaker 11: that meant I didn't get the part. And so, but anyway,
- 39:55Speaker 11: then it was like the next day. This was many,
- 39:58Speaker 11: many years ago, as you know. And anyway, so back
- 40:03Speaker 11: then we didn't have cell phones or anything.
- 40:05Speaker 4: Didn't page you. Yeah, right.
- 40:08Speaker 11: And I was in my 20s. And so my older
- 40:11Speaker 11: sister always knew where I was as a backup. So
- 40:15Speaker 11: my agent had my sister's. number as well. So my
- 40:20Speaker 11: mother and I, the following weekend, we went to San
- 40:23Speaker 11: Francisco because Jack Jones was going to be singing there.
- 40:27Speaker 11: And while we were there, my sister called and said,
- 40:30Speaker 11: you got a call from your agent and you got
- 40:33Speaker 11: the part in this movie. So I was so excited.
- 40:37Speaker 11: And I asked Jack about that later, you know, because
- 40:40Speaker 11: I thought for sure when they told me I could go.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:43Speaker 11: And he was so sweet. He they decided that I
- 40:49Speaker 11: would be playing Elizabeth, but they needed to keep seeing
- 40:51Speaker 11: more girls for the part of, oh my God.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Jill, right?
- 40:57Speaker 11: Jill, no. Well, yeah, Jill Banner. But the part was Virginia,
- 41:02Speaker 11: her name was. They needed somebody to fill that role.
- 41:05Speaker 11: So anyway, I was thrilled. And at the time, I
- 41:11Speaker 11: had no idea that, this movie would be so loved
- 41:15Speaker 11: by people now all these years later because it was
- 41:19Speaker 11: a very low budget film and we filmed it I
- 41:23Speaker 11: think it was 13 days and it sat for a
- 41:27Speaker 11: long time but Quentin Tarantino is a good friend of
- 41:31Speaker 11: Jack Hill's and you know he's kind of a quirky
- 41:33Speaker 11: guy and he loved the film and so thanks to
- 41:37Speaker 11: Quentin he kind of went to bat and had it
- 41:40Speaker 11: all re-digitized or whatever it is they do because At
- 41:43Speaker 11: the time, it was kind of grainy and stuff, so
- 41:46Speaker 11: now it's out on DVD and Blu-ray and everything.
- 41:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I was telling you before we started, I was
- 41:52Speaker 4: watching it streaming last night, and as I'm sitting there,
- 41:55Speaker 4: I was just like, it looks so good. I was like,
- 41:57Speaker 4: even this sent through the Internet. after it's been digitized
- 42:03Speaker 4: and like the fact that it this many years later
- 42:05Speaker 4: looks that good that you're getting in your home for free.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Like that's crazy.
- 42:09Speaker 11: Well, thank you, Brian. That, you know, I've, I've been
- 42:11Speaker 11: very blessed and fortunate that I've done a lot of
- 42:14Speaker 11: work over the years, mostly as a child and a teenager,
- 42:17Speaker 11: but spider baby is always just, just one of my
- 42:22Speaker 11: favorites and it touches my heart and makes me feel
- 42:25Speaker 11: so happy that people still embrace it and how much
- 42:29Speaker 11: they love it. And, um, you know, they've got merchandise,
- 42:33Speaker 11: they've got t-shirts and backpacks and blankets and shower curtains
- 42:39Speaker 11: and everything. And it's amazing to me. And I always
- 42:43Speaker 11: am so happy when people remember it.
- 42:47Speaker 4: Well, you, you mentioned Jack Hill. What, what was he
- 42:50Speaker 4: like as a director?
- 42:51Speaker 11: He was fabulous. In fact, you know, I'm going to
- 42:54Speaker 11: be doing, um, a convention, Monster Bash, coming up in
- 42:59Speaker 11: a couple of weeks. And Jack was supposed to be there.
- 43:02Speaker 4: I was wondering if he... traveled at all now.
- 43:05Speaker 11: You know he's in his 90s and so you know
- 43:08Speaker 11: as you get older it gets harder and harder to
- 43:11Speaker 11: travel and everything but he was planning on being there
- 43:13Speaker 11: because last year he was at um monsterama and he
- 43:18Speaker 11: loved being there and he has such a big fan
- 43:21Speaker 11: following and he's so dear and he was wonderful as
- 43:25Speaker 11: a director he was just kind and um i'm just
- 43:29Speaker 11: so happy But sadly, he and I are pretty much
- 43:32Speaker 11: the only ones left from Spider-Man. Mary Mitchell is still alive,
- 43:37Speaker 11: but she's in retirement. She doesn't do any conventions or anything.
- 43:41Speaker 11: So basically, it's just Jack and Mary and I are
- 43:46Speaker 11: the only ones still alive from the movie.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Well, that was, I mean, as far as, I guess,
- 43:51Speaker 4: was he directing you? Because, as we said, you were
- 43:54Speaker 4: doing a lot of Leave it to Beaver. Literally, Leave
- 43:56Speaker 4: it to Beaver. So, like, as you get into the
- 43:58Speaker 4: weirder subject matter... did you already kind of have a
- 44:00Speaker 4: handle on it or was he just sort of steering
- 44:03Speaker 4: you in the like, go down this road?
- 44:04Speaker 11: Yeah, well, you know, it's such a campy kind of,
- 44:07Speaker 11: you know, there's one outtake. In fact, well, Rob Zombie,
- 44:11Speaker 11: who you're horror fans, who all know Rob Zombie, he
- 44:14Speaker 11: was a big fan or is a big fan of
- 44:17Speaker 11: Spider Baby. And he put out the soundtrack. And he
- 44:21Speaker 11: was such, I haven't met him in person, but we've
- 44:23Speaker 11: emailed and he's so nice. And he asked me if,
- 44:27Speaker 11: you know, I would be part of the soundtrack and
- 44:32Speaker 11: so he interviewed me and he put my picture on
- 44:35Speaker 11: the cover and it's if anybody has seen that soundtrack
- 44:39Speaker 11: it's the craziest picture because I'm making this stupid face
- 44:43Speaker 11: and there's a story behind that because I had forgotten
- 44:45Speaker 11: my next line and I didn't know The camera was rolling.
- 44:51Speaker 11: And so I looked straight in the camera and made
- 44:53Speaker 11: like a stupid face. And it's so campy, this film,
- 44:56Speaker 11: that they actually left it in the film. It was
- 44:59Speaker 11: not scripted. But it's very quick. You have to look
- 45:02Speaker 11: for it. Because I think it's after that scene where
- 45:05Speaker 11: I have the pitchfork. Somewhere along there. You're usually messing
- 45:09Speaker 11: with your sister a lot. It's quick. But it's just
- 45:14Speaker 11: sad that Jill Banner, who was wonderful as Virginia, Spider Baby,
- 45:20Speaker 11: and Lon Chaney, that they didn't live long enough to
- 45:24Speaker 11: see the popularity of it.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Because.
- 45:28Speaker 11: Lon Chaney, he was a joy to work with, and
- 45:31Speaker 11: that was what got me so excited when they said
- 45:34Speaker 11: it was going to be Lon Chaney in the star.
- 45:36Speaker 11: To work with him was amazing. And Jill was a doll. But,
- 45:41Speaker 11: you know, typically on a film you work like three months,
- 45:43Speaker 11: or sometimes, you know, in today's world you work like
- 45:46Speaker 11: a year.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Could be, yeah.
- 45:47Speaker 11: And this was so quick that we didn't have enough
- 45:50Speaker 11: time to really, like, bond and hang out because we
- 45:53Speaker 11: had to get this film done. But we all got
- 45:55Speaker 11: along so well. Sid Haig, for horror fans. I love Sid.
- 46:01Speaker 6: I know.
- 46:02Speaker 11: Anybody that had the fortune of meeting Sid will attest
- 46:08Speaker 11: to the fact that he was one of the nicest
- 46:10Speaker 11: guys ever. And he loved his fans.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 46:14Speaker 11: He absolutely loved his fans.
- 46:16Speaker 4: And it took him, I remember talking to him about this,
- 46:20Speaker 4: like it took him so long before he found that love.
- 46:23Speaker 4: Like he was just a struggling actor for so long.
- 46:26Speaker 4: And then, like, he hit that, like, comeback phase. And, like,
- 46:30Speaker 4: people lined up to see him. So, like, it took him.
- 46:33Speaker 4: He had to hang in there. But, like, eventually he
- 46:35Speaker 4: just was so beloved.
- 46:36Speaker 11: I loved him. And he was so good in that.
- 46:38Speaker 11: And then Jack cast the two of us in another
- 46:41Speaker 11: one of his films, Pit Stop, to get to play
- 46:44Speaker 11: with Sid again. And just, you know, losing Sid was just,
- 46:49Speaker 11: it was just tragic. He just was such a joy
- 46:53Speaker 11: to be around. And I just feel so fortunate. that
- 46:57Speaker 11: I was able to work with him twice. And Jack,
- 46:59Speaker 11: he was a fabulous director because, you know, a director
- 47:03Speaker 11: is there to direct and that's what he does, but
- 47:05Speaker 11: yet he gives the actors kind of some leeway to,
- 47:09Speaker 11: you know, incorporate their interpretation. I mean, and he's so
- 47:15Speaker 11: soft-spoken and just so sweet. Did you ever get to
- 47:18Speaker 11: meet him?
- 47:19Speaker 2: No.
- 47:19Speaker 11: I wish you could have.
- 47:20Speaker 4: I think he hasn't done much. We've been doing this
- 47:23Speaker 4: for a lot of years, but I think he just
- 47:24Speaker 4: hasn't ventured this far into the country that we've crossed over. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:28Speaker 11: And he was supposed to be, of course, you know,
- 47:31Speaker 11: next month in Pennsylvania, and he was looking forward to it,
- 47:36Speaker 11: but sadly he fell.
- 47:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:39Speaker 11: I'll tell you a cute story about him. He's very
- 47:43Speaker 11: quiet and soft-spoken, a real gentleman. And a couple years ago,
- 47:47Speaker 11: they had a screening of Spider Baby somewhere. And afterward,
- 47:52Speaker 11: it was just Jack and me because Sid was doing
- 47:55Speaker 11: something else and everybody else was already gone. And so
- 47:59Speaker 11: after the screening, they asked if Jack and I would
- 48:02Speaker 11: go up and do this little kind of I guess
- 48:05Speaker 11: it was a podcast or maybe a local TV station
- 48:08Speaker 11: or whatever it was. So the moderator guy, the interview guy,
- 48:11Speaker 11: he turns to Jack and he goes, Jack, I have
- 48:15Speaker 11: to ask you this question because Spider Baby is such
- 48:18Speaker 11: a quirky little, out there, bizarre, strange little film. And
- 48:23Speaker 11: he said, I'm just curious, like, how did that come about? Like,
- 48:27Speaker 11: how would you sit down and write such a strange
- 48:31Speaker 11: little film? So Jack goes, well... I was smoking a
- 48:36Speaker 11: lot of weed back then. It's like, okay, that explains it.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Honesty.
- 48:41Speaker 4: That's what we like. That's what we like.
- 48:42Speaker 11: It was just so cute because nobody expected that coming
- 48:46Speaker 11: from him. And he's like 90, you know. It was
- 48:48Speaker 11: just cute. But that sort of kind of sums it up,
- 48:52Speaker 11: doesn't it?
- 48:52Speaker 4: Definitely. Well, and I did want to ask a little
- 48:56Speaker 4: bit about Jill because she was so young. Yes. you'd
- 49:00Speaker 4: grown up in it but she also hadn't really done.
- 49:02Speaker 11: Anything before she was wonderful she was so perfect in
- 49:05Speaker 11: the role and such a pretty lady and so sweet
- 49:08Speaker 11: and we got along great and um it was tragic
- 49:12Speaker 11: i'm sure the fans know that sadly she passed away
- 49:15Speaker 11: in an.
- 49:16Speaker 4: Automobile yeah i didn't know for the longest time and
- 49:19Speaker 4: i went, why haven't, you know, I hadn't seen her
- 49:22Speaker 4: in anything or I hadn't seen her at any of
- 49:24Speaker 4: these conventions. And then I looked it up. I was like, oh,
- 49:26Speaker 4: that's terrible.
- 49:26Speaker 11: I wish so much she was here and Sid and Lon.
- 49:30Speaker 11: You know, every day is a gift that we're here.
- 49:33Speaker 4: You never know.
- 49:34Speaker 11: But I'm just grateful. You know, and like, Brian, thank
- 49:37Speaker 11: you for doing this, because it's always fun to talk
- 49:40Speaker 11: about Spider Baby, and Spider Baby is one of my
- 49:44Speaker 11: all-time favorites. In fact, two years ago, I was in Italy.
- 49:49Speaker 11: It was for a Star Trek convention. It was all
- 49:52Speaker 11: about Star Trek, which I did an episode, and I
- 49:55Speaker 11: love doing Star Trek, too. But anyway, this young, really
- 49:58Speaker 11: cute guy, he was like in his 20s, came up.
- 50:01Speaker 11: He couldn't speak English or anything, but he wanted my autograph.
- 50:05Speaker 11: And he wanted my autograph on a Spider Baby DVD.
- 50:10Speaker 11: It was like, what?
- 50:10Speaker 4: It was so cute.
- 50:12Speaker 11: It just cracked me up. Here I'm in space. In Italy,
- 50:15Speaker 11: and he's got a spider baby.
- 50:16Speaker 4: Yeah, it goes beyond language barriers and across the oceans.
- 50:21Speaker 11: Isn't that funny? Yeah.
- 50:23Speaker 4: Well, and then just the shoot itself, I was going
- 50:25Speaker 4: to ask about that. That house doesn't make any sense, really.
- 50:28Speaker 4: So where were the scenes where you shot?
- 50:30Speaker 11: Well, the house was a real house, and as the
- 50:33Speaker 11: story goes, from what I learned, is that it was
- 50:37Speaker 11: an abandoned house, and it was kind of off the
- 50:40Speaker 11: side of a freeway. And, you know, typically when you
- 50:43Speaker 11: do a film, you have to get permits and everything
- 50:45Speaker 11: to film there.
- 50:46Speaker 4: If you're a big budget movie.
- 50:48Speaker 11: And so Jack, this is what I heard, was driving
- 50:53Speaker 11: by and spotted this old house. And it looked like,
- 50:55Speaker 11: you know. It looks cool. It looked like it would
- 50:58Speaker 11: fit the Mary family. And so basically we just kind
- 51:02Speaker 11: of took a chance and went there without a permit
- 51:04Speaker 11: and shot there the whole day. And nobody cared. Nobody cared.
- 51:08Speaker 11: We got arrested or anything. And then the interior, we
- 51:13Speaker 11: couldn't go inside. It was like really broken down inside.
- 51:16Speaker 11: And so the inside was filmed on a studio, Alpha
- 51:22Speaker 11: Omega Studios. And I think it was either... I don't remember,
- 51:27Speaker 11: Eagle Rock or Pasadena or Glendale or something so long ago.
- 51:30Speaker 11: I don't remember exactly where it was. But it was
- 51:33Speaker 11: a very cool set with the cobwebs and the whole thing.
- 51:36Speaker 11: And the rocking chair that Uncle Peter gets tied up in,
- 51:39Speaker 11: that was actually Jack's rocking chair that he brought from home.
- 51:43Speaker 4: And broke.
- 51:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:45Speaker 4: And got in trouble.
- 51:46Speaker 11: Yeah. But it was such a fun movie to do.
- 51:50Speaker 11: But as I said, after we did it, nothing happened.
- 51:53Speaker 11: It just kind of sat there for the longest time.
- 51:56Speaker 11: And to think now that there's merchandise and that it's
- 51:59Speaker 11: out on Blu-ray and Rob Zombie did the soundtrack and
- 52:03Speaker 11: it's been in a lot of fans and I get
- 52:06Speaker 11: fan mail from it. And I just feel so grateful
- 52:10Speaker 11: to have been a part of Spider Baby. I really do.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:15Speaker 4: It's an amazing movie, I have to say.
- 52:16Speaker 11: Well, thank you. I mean, I guess it's not for everybody.
- 52:19Speaker 11: Definitely not.
- 52:20Speaker 4: Well, I think that's why I was so drawn to it.
- 52:22Speaker 4: That first time I saw it years ago and I
- 52:23Speaker 4: was like, it's just so different. And especially for its time,
- 52:27Speaker 4: because there's like horror going back to the dawn of cinema.
- 52:30Speaker 4: But even for its time, it's so weird and different
- 52:33Speaker 4: from all the other movies coming out around then.
- 52:35Speaker 11: Yeah, it's different and it's like a... horror film but
- 52:38Speaker 11: it's not really a slasher film like with a lot
- 52:41Speaker 11: of blood and gore it's just kind of kind of
- 52:43Speaker 11: campy and throughout there's these little innuendos that some people
- 52:48Speaker 11: pick up more.
- 52:48Speaker 4: So as it goes on i forgot as we get
- 52:50Speaker 4: to the end i'm like oh yeah it's very it's
- 52:52Speaker 4: almost racy.
- 52:53Speaker 11: At this point and you know in the movie business
- 52:56Speaker 11: as people i'm sure already know this if an actor
- 52:59Speaker 11: can't cry they have a makeup person on the sidelines
- 53:03Speaker 11: and what they do is If they want you to
- 53:06Speaker 11: look like you've got tears in your eyes, I've never
- 53:09Speaker 11: fortunately had to do this because I cry at supermarket openings. Anyway,
- 53:15Speaker 11: they blow something in your eyes or something to make
- 53:18Speaker 11: your eyes water. And if they want tears coming down,
- 53:22Speaker 11: they have an eyedropper and they put something like glycerin
- 53:26Speaker 11: or whatever so that it picks up on the camera.
- 53:29Speaker 11: So in the scene where Lon Chaney's crying, the makeup
- 53:32Speaker 11: person is like standing there you know, off waiting to
- 53:37Speaker 11: do that. They never needed the makeup person because Lon
- 53:41Speaker 11: Chaney was so into being Bruno. He loved that role
- 53:45Speaker 11: and he was immersed in it. And he loved that
- 53:49Speaker 11: part so much that when he had to start crying,
- 53:52Speaker 11: those are his real tears. Those were his honest to God,
- 53:56Speaker 11: real tears. There's no makeup person needed. it was real.
- 54:00Speaker 4: He's yeah. He's so good in that. Like, especially that scene,
- 54:04Speaker 4: like that's like, it's like building, he's just sort of
- 54:06Speaker 4: doing what he needs to do most of them, but
- 54:08Speaker 4: then it's like he stops and realizes what he's going
- 54:11Speaker 4: to have to do and what's best for the kids.
- 54:13Speaker 11: And yeah, it's actually very touching. And then of course,
- 54:17Speaker 11: Mantan Moreland, I mean, he just having him in the
- 54:21Speaker 11: film was cool. And, um, and Quinn, you know, he, Sadly,
- 54:26Speaker 11: he passed away not too long ago. And, yeah, one
- 54:29Speaker 11: by one, everybody's. So I feel fortunate that I'm still
- 54:33Speaker 11: above ground.
- 54:34Speaker 4: I think that myself some days. You never know.
- 54:38Speaker 11: Yeah. So, but it's always fun to talk about Spider Baby.
- 54:43Speaker 11: And I, I mean, I, I can't get over how
- 54:48Speaker 11: well loved it is from people from literally. I got
- 54:51Speaker 11: a letter from Hong Kong. and one from Holland, and from,
- 54:57Speaker 11: you know, like, all these different countries, and I think,
- 55:00Speaker 11: how do they know about Spider-Babies?
- 55:01Speaker 2: It's amazing.
- 55:02Speaker 4: Movie fans are hardcore.
- 55:03Speaker 11: Yeah, and wonderful. It means so much, you know, and like,
- 55:08Speaker 11: doing these conventions, like this one, Wonderfest, it's the first
- 55:12Speaker 11: time I'm here, but the fans are just so kind,
- 55:16Speaker 11: and it's so nice, they come up to us at
- 55:19Speaker 11: our table, and they always say, thank you for being here,
- 55:22Speaker 11: and I think, you know, That's so nice, but I
- 55:25Speaker 11: think it should be the other way around, that we
- 55:27Speaker 11: should be thanking the fans. Because honestly, if it weren't
- 55:31Speaker 11: for the fans, we'd have no reason to be here
- 55:34Speaker 11: or to do any of this. So I'm always grateful
- 55:37Speaker 11: to the fans.
- 55:38Speaker 4: Well, that's amazing. Well, is there anything else you want
- 55:42Speaker 4: to tell people? You did say you've got another appearance
- 55:45Speaker 4: coming up, or is there anything new you want to
- 55:48Speaker 4: tell people about or where they should look for you?
- 55:51Speaker 11: Well, I'm going to be doing a little documentary in August.
- 55:55Speaker 11: I don't know when it'll be finished. I'm doing a
- 55:58Speaker 11: little cameo in it. And then I did a pilot
- 56:05Speaker 11: for a film that will probably be streaming. It's called
- 56:09Speaker 11: Dusty Bluffs, and that's supposed to be coming out in August.
- 56:13Speaker 11: And that was a fun role because I play this over-the-top,
- 56:17Speaker 11: crazy woman um it was a lot of fun so
- 56:20Speaker 11: i'm still doing it i'm still doing what i love
- 56:24Speaker 11: and i just feel very grateful to still be doing
- 56:29Speaker 11: it and meeting the fans is always one of my
- 56:32Speaker 11: favorite parts because without fans none of this would mean
- 56:36Speaker 11: anything you know and.
- 56:38Speaker 4: You can still play crazy is what we found out
- 56:40Speaker 4: after all these years.
- 56:41Speaker 11: Crazy is still just.
- 56:43Speaker 4: Right below the surface Do you still send people to
- 56:47Speaker 4: find your book? I know you've got the.
- 56:49Speaker 11: Yeah, I do have a book. It's called Real Tears,
- 56:53Speaker 11: and it's spelled R-E-E-L, because that's how old I am.
- 56:57Speaker 11: Back in the days when I first started, they didn't
- 56:59Speaker 11: have digital stuff like they do now. It was actually
- 57:03Speaker 11: a film reel.
- 57:04Speaker 4: It's coveted now. Again, the hardcore fans love it when
- 57:07Speaker 4: they get to see something on film.
- 57:08Speaker 11: Oh, really? And so, you know, most people remember me from...
- 57:14Speaker 11: I don't know why, but it seemed like just about
- 57:17Speaker 11: every part I ever had, I had to cry. And
- 57:20Speaker 11: people would say, were those real tears or were they fake?
- 57:23Speaker 11: So it was kind of a play on words. So
- 57:25Speaker 11: it's called Real Tears because the films I did were
- 57:28Speaker 11: unreal and the tears were real. So it's called Real,
- 57:34Speaker 11: spelled R-E-E-L, Real Tears, take two, and it's available on
- 57:38Speaker 11: Amazon and And it's my autobiography. And I wrote with
- 57:43Speaker 11: the help of Donald Vaughn. And it's out there on
- 57:46Speaker 11: Bear Manor Media as well as Amazon. And it's my
- 57:50Speaker 11: autobiography and all about growing up in Hollywood as a
- 57:54Speaker 11: child actress and my whole life story. And there's a
- 57:58Speaker 11: lot of photos in it and everything. And also, I
- 58:02Speaker 11: write a column for the Vegas Voice. and that's a
- 58:07Speaker 11: monthly magazine that comes out. It's on the Internet. It's
- 58:12Speaker 11: just called The Vegas Voice. It's a magazine basically for seniors,
- 58:16Speaker 11: but my column is called Hollywood Memories, and I've been
- 58:19Speaker 11: writing for 15 years. So that's been fun, and that's
- 58:23Speaker 11: what I've been doing.
- 58:24Speaker 4: That's terrific. Well, thank you for being here, and thank
- 58:26Speaker 4: you for sharing your stories.
- 58:31Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 58:34Speaker 8: Yeah no no kidding man yeah no that was cool
- 58:37Speaker 8: there was a human moment there uh that you shared
- 58:40Speaker 8: with her that's pretty cool and uh awesome yeah yeah
- 58:44Speaker 8: no she seemed real laid.
- 58:45Speaker 1: Back and uh real uh down to earth and you
- 58:49Speaker 1: know just kind of like you know cool lady you
- 58:52Speaker 1: know she.
- 58:52Speaker 4: Was she was very cool um also again like somebody
- 58:56Speaker 4: that was just came into it and and just was
- 59:00Speaker 4: the threw herself into it early I suppose and then
- 59:03Speaker 4: like because I was looking today I was like what
- 59:05Speaker 4: is the overall number IMDB which again you can put
- 59:09Speaker 4: as much faith in that as you want uh it's
- 59:11Speaker 4: around 90 different film and tv projects over these you
- 59:15Speaker 4: know so it's like starting off as early as she
- 59:18Speaker 4: did and being in some pretty huge projects early on
- 59:21Speaker 4: while she was still a child essentially like that's, that's
- 59:25Speaker 4: crazy to have that much. And then, you know, as,
- 59:28Speaker 4: as you heard, I talked to her about like going from,
- 59:31Speaker 4: you know, at this point you can use leave it
- 59:34Speaker 4: to beaver as a generic term for like mainstream America
- 59:39Speaker 4: or something super square and boring, but like, no, she
- 59:42Speaker 4: literally was on leave it to beaver and then went
- 59:45Speaker 4: on a few years later to be in spider baby,
- 59:48Speaker 4: you know, it's like to be thrust into the middle
- 59:51Speaker 4: of this, craziness that is spider babies so that that
- 59:54Speaker 4: was my you know like how how crazy is this
- 59:58Speaker 4: part of your career that you're like going from very
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: normal mainstream sitcoms to yeah crazy abandoned house with jack hill.
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: Yeah no you could you could imagine like kids who
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: probably had a crush on her in uh the leave
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: of the beaver years and everything growing up and then
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: you know, she growing up and like being in spider
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: baby and spider baby being like their favorite movie because like, Oh.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: Man, she's so cool now, you know? But, um, no, no,
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: it's what's so interesting.
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: What she says is like this thing shot in 67,
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: you know, or whatever, you know, 67 was, uh, you know,
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: like 14 days of their lives or something like that. Like, like,
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: about two weeks of shooting, you.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: Know, that we're still talking about all these years later.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: It's so weird. Two weeks. So she says like, not really,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: you know, it wasn't like, you know.
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: They, it was like something they did and it came
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: and went and then it got released like barely and came.
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: And went sitting around on a shelf for a while.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: Cause the, yeah, the people funding it like went bankrupt
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: and then it had like legal issues like they always do.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: And like, so yeah, it, it wasn't an easy release
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: even then. And then after that kind of like, didn't
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: have that much of a response and like, it's only
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: years since then of like, then showing up on home
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: video kind of upped it a little bit. And then the, the,
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: the weirdo next level of film geeks that like latched
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: onto it. And, and I definitely want to get to
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: that later, but yeah, I think that's what sort of
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: raised it up to a new level where it then
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: could eat out there and get out there in a
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: good format and a good version of it. But yeah,
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: yeah yeah so even the streaming version that's what i
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: said there the the streaming version i watched for free
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: in my house was really good so i think it's
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: hit and miss i think you have to you just
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: have to figure out which one is the better version
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: because it's out there so many different places over the
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: years but the random one that i happened to pick
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: was streaming for free on whatever streaming format popped up
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: on roku And, like, it was the remastered version, and
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: it looked great, and the sound was great. And, like,
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: so even, you know, it's filtered its way through to
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: that version when they redid everything.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: And, like, that's awesome.
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: That's one more reason to redo movies and to get
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: these good copies out there, because... we're going to latch
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: onto it at some point. So it's like, we need
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: a good copy of it. Don't, you know, I, I'm
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: always so concerned when some of these like old movies
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: are disappearing and like, nobody bothers to take care of them.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: Certainly back in the old days when like the film
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: itself was deteriorating. But even now, like if you don't
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: remaster it and like put out a good copy of it,
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: you may not have a version of it to do
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: that after enough time passes. So yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: thankful that they did that because it looks really good.
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: Absolutely absolutely if you don't get it when it's like
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: 12 bucks and five years or six years from now
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: you'll only be able to find like a 200 version
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: of it on you know ebay or something like that
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: you know so it's like you kind of gotta swipe
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: up a version sometimes.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: When you when you can you know pick and choose
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: that's what i'm saying yeah yeah physical media grab the
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: good versions when they're out there that's right that's right
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: So once again, yeah, I thank you to Beverly. I
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: do like her wrap up is maybe a little more
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: grim than Sid's because hers is I feel fortunate that
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: I'm still above ground.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: That's kind of the takeaway from this and where we're
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: eventually going is the fact that, you know, of the
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: four main people kind of in this, you know, family cast,
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: like two of them never got to see it be beloved.
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: You know, it's like the other half of the cast.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: One almost immediately was gone, and the other shortly thereafter. So, like,
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: you didn't... You know, for them, you didn't get to
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: see that it became this cult favorite and that people...
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: Decades later, we're still loving it, but... Right. Yeah, so.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: They had no idea.
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: It was just something they did for two weeks, and
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: then it disappeared, and they moved on with life, you know?
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: Moved on with life. But yeah, luckily, she and Sid
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: both got to experience it, and like she said, she's
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: getting letters from Hong Kong and Holland. Like, it's just,
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: it's amazing the way that it's, like, worked its way
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: into pop culture and finds its audience regardless, so.
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: Yeah, totally.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Totally.
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: And yeah, she did put her book out. So I was, yeah,
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: once again, go find her book. She's got an amazing story.
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: So go out there and pick it up and send
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: her a message. She's still glad to hear from people.
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: So she really seemed to appreciate people showing up at
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: the show and even just me sitting there talking to her.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: She liked, you know, that somebody wanted to hear the story.
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: So like that's, not everybody has that response I've found
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: over the years. So it's really nice when somebody sort
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: of still likes talking. Again, a thing that they did
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: for two weeks decades ago. Like some weirdo is going
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: to come up and be like, Hey, tell me about
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: that time. You know, can I tell you about a
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: time I went to work 40 years ago? No, exactly.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: She still kind of has to do that and like,
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: and appreciates it and was really great about sitting there
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: telling stories. So like, yeah, that, that was awesome. So
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: thank you once again to Beverly. That was, that was
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: really cool. All right, are we ready to dig into
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: the movie as a whole?
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: As the movie proper. Yeah, yeah, let's do it. Let's
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: do it. Let's get in there. It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: American General Pictures imprisons you in a bloody web of terror.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Spider-Baby has the seductive innocence of Lolita and the savage

- 1:06:00Speaker 2: sweet kisses engulf you in a bloody web of horror.

- 1:06:08Speaker 2: Lon Chaney. For the horror thrill of your life, see
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Spider Baby from American General Pictures.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: Spider Baby, Spider Baby, Spider Baby, Spider Baby, Spider.
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: Baby, yeah!
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: Spider Baby, Spider.
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: Baby, Spider Baby, Spider Baby, Spider Baby, yeah!
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: I met Spider-Baby when I.
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: Went to her house.
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: Yeah!
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Then I met her sister. Bring this girl around.
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: Yeah!
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Dark and horror, web of terror. Savage hunger, getting nearer.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: Spider-Girl walk everywhere. Spider-Girl walk everywhere.
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: Spider-Baby, Spider-Baby, Spider-Baby, Spider-Baby.
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: This special edition Silver Theater feature is Spider-Baby, or The
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: Maddest Story Ever Told. The year is 1967. The director
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: is Jack Hill. And the plot, according to IMDb, and
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: I already said you can put as much faith in
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: them as you want. I don't so much with this.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: Their breakdown is, a household of cannibals take drastic measures
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: when distant relatives question their sanity. So, not exactly... 100%.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: I mean, it's accurate, but not really.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: It sounds like a different movie.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: Yeah, not really a good representation of what the movie
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: actually is.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Absolutely not.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: I don't know about that one. But either way, spoiler alert,
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: we're going to ruin the hell out of this. But again,
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: why would you be this far in listening to all
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: this if you haven't watched the movie? But just in case,
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: go watch the movie. Yeah, it's definitely worth it.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: The other reason, as I said, I was putting this together,
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: and I've Been working on it for years and years.
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: But once I got to recording with Beverly and I
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: was like, okay, now I got to put the rest
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: of this part together as the sort of wraparound of
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: our interviews. So I was like, well, who's coming along
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: on this journey with me? And I almost immediately was like, well, obviously,
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: like this is right in your wheelhouse of things that
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: you're super dorky about.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: So I kind of assumed that you'd seen it. But
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: as you said, you hadn't in its entirety seen it before.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: So I guess that's going to be my take for
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: you on this. You came into it with fresh eyes recently.
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: So I guess what was your overall view of it
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: once you watched it this first time in its entirety?
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Okay, right, right, right.
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: So its reputation precedes it. And a lot of the time,
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: sometimes with these movies, these cult films, You know, people
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: saw them when they were 12 and it really affected
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: them and then you know you went by the if
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: you didn't grow up with it and you know idolize
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: it and.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: You know it didn't hit you at the right time
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: when your brain.
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: Was soft and you know when you had an open
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: mind on things you know these movies don't you know,
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: hit the same way sometimes. Some of you go like, ah, well,
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: it's got that one good scene in it, but it's
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: not really my thing, you know?
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: Or sometimes it doesn't hold up either. There's definitely stuff
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: I watched as a kid and thought was awesome, but
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: then 15, 20 years go by before I watch it again.
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: And then I'm like, oh, look, here's a copy of it.
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: I'm going to watch it. And I'll watch it again
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: and be like, oh, this isn't really that great. But
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: that is not the case with this movie.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: No, no, absolutely not.
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: So, uh, so I am, you know, comfortably middle-aged here and, uh,
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: walking into this movie, having just sort of known, you know,
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: people love it. And, uh, and, uh, whatchamacallit, knowing from
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: those these little grainy, crappy, uh, clips from a public,
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: you know, a public domain compilation horror thing, uh, that
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: I talked about earlier. And, um, but not really knowing anything,
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: then putting it on and actually sitting and watching it
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: from beginning to end, you know, so you got to
- 1:10:24Speaker 5: get past the first scene where the character is kind
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: of doing a, a step and fetch it kind of, uh,
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: you know, uh, stereotype.
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: You know i don't know i think we get into
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: the best part right away because you get those opening
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: credits oh right those animated versions of everyone are a
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: adorable and creepy which is always what i'm looking for
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: yeah anything i want i want to also have a
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: little creepy element to it but they're also so cute
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: it's ridiculous the little drawing of sid you know it's like.
- 1:10:57Speaker 12: Yeah most adorable thing no the opening credit music with
- 1:11:02Speaker 12: the music which is again the Most adorable creepy thing
- 1:11:07Speaker 12: ever brought to you by Lon Chaney Jr.
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: Lon Chaney Jr. singing that opening song is so... Yeah,
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: you just know already you're in good hands or like
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: this is going to be different. And the fact is
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: so sad. I mean, because he sounds.
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: I've heard entirely separate stories, some of which said, I
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: didn't see him drinking. So, I don't know. I mean,
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: we definitely know in life he had a problem. But
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: at this point, he was trying to not drink. So, like,
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: I don't know. Maybe he was. Maybe that's just how
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: he sounds.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. It sounded real slurry to me.
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: But maybe he had to get loosened up a little
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: bit for singing, making his singing debut.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: It's as much.
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: Talking as it is singing, but it's fun regardless.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: It's great. It's great.
- 1:12:04Speaker 5: And I'm not making light of the problems he had
- 1:12:07Speaker 5: and everything, but it's a fantastic opening credit, and that...
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: opening theme song is just so perfect it's kind of
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: like got monster mash kind of yeah you know.
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: For the dorky monster kids that are out there like
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: and we all sort of fall into that same category
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: of like hit and miss specifics you may not like
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: but there's just a mode that you fall into that
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: you're just like oh no this is my thing And
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: like you, you, you know, the same dorks that rock
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: out with Monster Mash year in and year out, not
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: even Halloween. Like you could be listening to it in
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: the middle of July.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: Right, right, right.
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: So yeah, it's like, those are the same people that
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: are going to come to this and be like, this
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: song is the greatest song.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: I've ever heard.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: Totally, totally.
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: And Jack did that on purpose. Like in that special
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: edition stuff, like he specifically says, I wanted to let
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: people know right away. He's like, I wanted them to
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: know right up front. that this is going to be
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: a fun movie. And like, because again, like there's always
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: been like sort of horror comedy mixed in there, but
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: this was still kind of early on for that concept
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: because it is almost equal parts sometimes. Like it's definitely
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: still a horror movie, but it knows it's being silly
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: a lot of the time. So it's, it's pretty close
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: to just horror comedy full on. And yeah, He wanted
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: to let people know that, like he wanted to kind
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: of give them a heads up right from the start
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: of like, it's okay. Like this is, we're not taking
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: ourselves too seriously. So it's okay for you to have
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: fun with this movie too. That's, I love it.
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: You know, I think, I think this movie, what it
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: got so perfect was that tone.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:13:48Speaker 5: Well, of where it almost just makes it impervious to
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: criticism and, because it's, it knows itself so well, and
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: it just has just the right, it, it, it's really,
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: it kind of, like, made me go, like, I kind
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: of need to see all Jack Hill's movies now, because
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: I don't think I've seen any of them. I was
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: looking at the list, and even, like, you know, like
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: his Pam Greer work and everything.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: I haven't seen it.
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: I've seen some of those, but yeah, there's definitely a
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: lot that I'm still missing that I want to go
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: fill in those holes.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: And so I was just going like, this is so
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: assured in like knowing what kind of movie this is
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: and making it, it's telling you exactly, it's okay to
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: like this because we know we're in on the joke.
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: And so if we're not trying to like, you know,
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: give you nightmares or anything. We're kind of, as kind
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: of what we were saying earlier, it's just like a
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: good hang, you know, it's like, we're going to hang out,
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: we're going to do some crazy stuff. And, you know,
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: we have these severe limitations on what we're able to do,
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: but the tone is so perfect that you don't care.
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: Like when the dynamite goes off and they just shake
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: the cameras up like that, you.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: Just kind of like, you're kind of like, that's actually
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: so charming, you know?
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: And, uh, I think the scene that got me where
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: I was going like, oh man, this movie is totally
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: in on it, is when the lawyer comes up on
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: the dumb waiter, you know, and he's still got the
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: cigar in his mouth, you know?
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: And I was just like, that is so funny.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: It doesn't matter if it's realistic it's funny is more
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: important than whether it's what would actually happen if you
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: murdered someone with a cigar in their mouth absolutely so you're.
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: Just kind of like oh this movie no this movie
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: is not meant for you to because some of the
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: stuff is like real like you know the weird psychosexual
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: stuff in the movie is or you know there's I
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: guess there's like really rape in the movie you know, and.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Really, because had this movie.
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: It's getting there.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: We don't really know what happens at that one point,
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: and the other parts sometimes get interrupted, so yeah.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: I try not to think too much about that, but... Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: I mean, there's a lot of stuff in this movie,
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: had it not been handled with, like, a lighter touch,
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: would be very disturbing to watch, you know?
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: Definitely.
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: So, the fact that it's It's handled in such a
- 1:16:33Speaker 5: monster kid fashion and such a light hand to it.
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: It makes it all just flow and be very palatable.
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: You know, you're not eating, you know, a heavy meal.
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: You're just kind of having a light dessert version of
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: the story.
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: Those light greens that Virginia was enjoying.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, right, right. It looked like
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: scrub brush, right?
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: It looked like black sludge.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Oh, oh, right, right.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: Whatever the hell she was actually eating, I don't know.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: Just randomly, just talking about that scene, one of my,
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: besides movies where nothing happens, my favorite, just my favorite
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: thing in movies in general are dinner table sequences, you know?
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: And people, like, because I think it's just, like, most
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: people know real psychological warfare in their day-to-day life as
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: happening at the dinner table, you know?
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: Specifically with your family.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: Yes. Yes.
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: And when you go over to somebody's house and you
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: sit at their dinner table with them and you see
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: the weird power dynamics going on behind the scenes and
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: you're going like, oh, man. There's what's happening here, and
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: then there's what's really happening here. I always find that fascinating.
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: I always find it so... It's like when I go
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: to somebody's house and I'm at their dinner table, it's
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: just like Stranger in a Strange Land. Movies like this,
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: I love these movies. I love movies where there's a
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: weird scene around a dinner table, and... And this movie
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: has a great, it has such a great dinner table
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: sequence of a mixture of what's.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: Normal for a family can.
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: Look insane to people who, from the outside, you know?
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: So I love that. I love this. We're all over
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: the map on this thing. We just skipped. That's what
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: I was thinking.
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: I mean, we don't necessarily have to go beat by beat,
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: but there are a lot of bigger things along the
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: way that we definitely need to hit so yeah we
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: can just kind of do whatever yeah we can ping
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: pong we can do we again if we're if we're
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: going to do the dinner table scene like we can
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: talk about how ahead of the curve this movie is
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: yeah Like, because we're referencing, you know, what will then
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: become a standard in these type of movies. And, like,
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: this is still many years before Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: is sort of your go-to of, like, the most horrifying
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: dinner table scene ever. You know, it's like, this is...
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: Years before that. So you're assuming that, you know, you've
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: got people involved in that movie watching this movie beforehand
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: in some, you know, theater somewhere seeing some scratched up
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: print of this going, oh, you know, whether or not
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: it was specifically meant to, but it planted that seed.
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: I'm assuming that it's just like, well, yeah, we can
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: do a version of that. And ours will be even scarier,
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: which is a little more disturbing in that one, perhaps, but.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: But just in general, like the concept of what that,
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: cause that's usually your go-to for people that are like, oh,
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: those crazy backwoods families and they're probably cannibals. And like,
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: this was well before Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Hills Have Eyes,
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: Wrong Turn. Like it just becomes a running theme of like,
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: the scary people that are out in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: And like, you, you don't have no idea what's going
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: on in that weird house. Like that's, that's become a
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: staple of horror now. And like, this was well before that, like,
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: you know, it's like specifically that dinner table scene, but
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: also just the crazy family dynamic that again, you'll see
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: somebody like Rob Zombie kind of stealing from in that
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: first movie of like, It's a family in quotes that
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: like come together and do a lot of weird stuff
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: in a house. And like, how is that any different?
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: So it's, I don't know. It is interesting how much
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: it does something that then becomes part of horror culture,
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: but it does it so far ahead of everybody else.
- 1:21:02Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:21:03Speaker 5: And, and like, as yeah, the chainsaw, you can definitely,
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: I mean, it's like a, almost a straight line, uh,
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: evolution chart of spider baby to chainsaw to house of
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: a thousand corpses, you know, it's like, it's, I mean,
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: it's just like almost like, I mean, good grief, you know,
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: it's just reinterpreted per the era that it's, that it's
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: going through, you know, and, and, and with three different
- 1:21:30Speaker 5: kinds of tones, I think, Rob Zombie's movie is trying
- 1:21:34Speaker 5: to hit more of a spider baby tone.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: But it's very purposefully doing it too.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: But it's very heavy handed.
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: I don't know if it was purposely trying to do
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: it in Chainsaw versus this is not even doing it
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: as like, again, it's almost as a lark. Like it's
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: a joke.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: Sort of. But at the same time, I've seen like,
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: I've seen it referenced and this may just be horror
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: geeks that want to sit around and overthink things now.
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: But I definitely see it referenced because you are coming
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: out of out of that TV era where you're like,
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: it's not just Leave it to Beaver, but it's your
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: Ozzie and Harriet's and like, it's the family gathered around
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: the table and they're the perfect American family. So now
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: we like cut to this, which is like, maybe they're
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: doing it for fun, but at the same time, here's
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: your society decaying in front of you. Here's the horrible
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: bastardized version of the nuclear family that we have here.
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: You know, it's like, well, this is like, almost commenting
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: on the Ozzie and Harriet-ness of, you know, your normal
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: family sitcom, sit around the dinner table kind of a thing.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: Well, definitely.
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: Well, this is kind of like, this one's kind of
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: like making fun of like, because of the inbreeding and
- 1:22:46Speaker 5: stuff like that, they're kind of like making fun of
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: like the upper class, how the upper class kind of
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: is this hermetically sealed thing world of deviance you know
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: and then Chainsaw kind of takes it on the other
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: side it's kind of like poor people and rich people
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: kind of like being the same you know and so
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: it's kind of like how these hermetically sealed cultures just
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: kind of start becoming copies of copies and they start
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: falling apart and coming apart on the seams and going
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: insane and so like isolated you know stagnant communities you
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: know And then like in Chainsaw, it's like these folks
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: have become stagnated due to lack of economic opportunity and
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: just kind of like being isolated from all things.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: And so they're kind of like.
- 1:23:36Speaker 5: The farmer, you know, blue collar, you know, heartland of
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: America being cut off and then, you know, going insane,
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: you know? And so you're kind of saying like, you know,
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: the backbone is insane. The, the, and spider baby is
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: saying like, you know, the people that should know better,
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: you know, like the, the elite, the elite are.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: Insane, you know? And, uh, so yeah, I mean, it is,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: this is basically.
- 1:24:07Speaker 5: You know, talking about, you know, uh, family falling apart, things,
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: things that should be, you know, things that we, we,
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: put our trust into, like, oh, they, you know, the Joneses,
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: you know, and, you know, the Joneses are insane, you know,
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: and they've got a man baby that's.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: Well, he's regressing. What do you want?
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: He's regressing. He's regressing. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: The other thing with these characters in particular, too, is, like,
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: we certainly, you know, throughout film history, you get a
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: lot of villains, and, like, in the earlier days, there's
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: definitely ones that are very, you know, black hat, white hat.
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: This is the bad guy. Let's make it very obvious.
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: This is the bad guy. You start to see that
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: change in the, those mid years there where we get
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: a lot of crazy dramas and you start to see like,
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: maybe you start to identify with the villains a little bit,
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: but it's rare that you get like, this is like, again,
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: still seemingly. Cause now you get to like antiheroes are
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: the norm.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Like it's rare.
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: If you get to a movie, that's about a regular
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: clean cut kind of a person that's your lead. Like now,
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: You just, everything is like, how flawed can we make
- 1:25:20Speaker 4: our main character?
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: But this is pretty early on for that kind of thing.
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: And yet these are completely sympathetic characters. villains like they
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: should be the villains of the movie right they're kind
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: of not like as you get into it you're like
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: well i'm not rooting for these rich weirdos that show
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: up and like want to take everything away from them
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: right so i'm left with you know which of these
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: two groups do i want to root for well i
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: want to root for our kids because they're awesome like
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: even though they're doing horrible things like they are from
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: scene one murdering people and then everything they do along
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: the way should make them villains of the story but
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: by the end you still at least sympathize with them
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: if not completely side with them and be like no
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: i want them to be okay like you care about
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: these characters which again for something that's as funny as
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: this is And as villainous as they are, like, you shouldn't, really.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: But you do. Like, you care about these kids. And
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: you want them. You want the best for them. And
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: in the end, maybe we get the best for them.
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: You know, you have, you know, Lon Chaney in that scene, like,
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: kind of breaking it down. And, like, this is what
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: I need to do. Like, this is what's best for
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: everyone involved.
- 1:26:35Speaker 5: That's why this movie is so much better than it
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: has any right to be.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:26:40Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: And probably why it has the staying power it does,
- 1:26:44Speaker 5: that kind of moral ambiguity of everything is so good
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: in this. Because, yes, you are, yes, the family, you're
- 1:26:54Speaker 5: going like, well, yeah, they're murderous and crazy and everything,
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: but it's really not their fault. They have, like, a
- 1:27:02Speaker 5: genetic disorder.
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: In general, you can say just the way they were
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: raised has also raised them to be abnormal. But then
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: on top of that, they literally genetically have a problem
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: going on too.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: Two strikes already.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: But they're very loving towards each other. I mean, they're
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: sibling bickery, but those sisters stick together, man.
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: They do. As much as the older one wants to
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: mess with... And you see it's very calculated. Beverly's performance
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: is really interesting because hers is very calculated. And you
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: see her... manipulating the sister when she needs to and
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: you see her assessing what's going on where we don't
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: ever get that from virginia like she is she is
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: like it's animal instinct it's like she does right she
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: is almost still kind of a child because she does
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: what makes her happy and like playing with sid makes
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: her happy so she's like yay let's go run around
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: and play right murdering you know people it was like
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: playing playing her game of like the spiders caught a
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: bug like that's what makes her happy and like she
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: does it without even thinking about it it's just what
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: she does versus you see like the way that the
- 1:28:17Speaker 4: older sister is sort of assessing what's going on and
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: like what do i need to do to make sure
- 1:28:24Speaker 4: you know i come out okay in this scenario and
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: like some something as simple as I don't get in trouble. Like, Oh,
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: look what Virginia did. So that's a very sibling thing too,
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: is like narc on your sister. But like, it's also
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: just very, the thing that, the scene that I think
- 1:28:41Speaker 4: is really impressive, and I didn't even get a chance
- 1:28:43Speaker 4: to ask her this, but it's so funny because it
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: so perfectly encapsulates how she operates, is her, after most
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: of the murders have happened, like, the puzzle at the end.
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: Did you watch her putting the puzzle together as they're
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: sitting in the living room or wherever they are?
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: Oh, and she's cutting the pieces to make it.
- 1:29:01Speaker 6: Fit, right?
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: She just rips off pieces of the puzzle piece that
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: doesn't fit and jams it in there. And like, that's
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: her as a character. I was like, that is so
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: amazing because it's just her. How do I deal with
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: this problem? I take care of it. Like, it's just
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: her like assessing the situation. I don't like what I've
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: been handed here. I'm going to fix it. Like, so
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: that as a character is just like amazing. So I
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: was like, I wonder how much thought was put into that.
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: Was that in the script? Like, I do want to
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: want to go back and be like, where did that
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: part come from? Cause that's one of the few things
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: I noticed that it was like, this is so specific.
- 1:29:37Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: Like if it just accidentally ended up there and she
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: thought it would be funny to tear a piece off is,
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: is amazing because it also perfectly fits the character that
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: she is.
- 1:29:47Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: No, I thought that was pretty cool.
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: And, you know, I kind of interpreted it as like,
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: you know, what a child would, you know, how they
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: would interpret fixing a problem, you know, and everything. Or
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: like how, you know, you wish you could when you're
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: frustrated with a puzzle, you know, you wish you could
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: just like, you know, reform the pieces to make them fit. But,
- 1:30:06Speaker 5: you know, it's like, well, it's just like a really,
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: it's just a cool detail. It's a really cool detail
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: that does show character.
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: Or just kids that are spoiled. Of like, no, I
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: don't want this to be wrong. I want it to
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: be the way I want it. And then her fixing
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: it in her mind. Again, these are kids who have
- 1:30:24Speaker 4: had little... supervision you know it's like he's trying his
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: best but you got one guy trying to take care
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: of them they're special right right they have special needs
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: and like he's doing his best but like they've had
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: little supervision so these are kind of spoiled because even
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: when they do something horrible like murder people the most
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: he does is like girls now what did i tell
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: you like yeah yeah yeah he does what he can
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: but they've they've been left to run wild and like,
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: so they are kind of spoiled in their own weird
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: way of like, I get to do what I want.
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: I get to have fun in the way I want. Like,
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: so yeah, it's, it's, it is a little bit of
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: that too, that like, they don't have a lot of
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: rules telling them not to do this thing or that.
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: So they kind of do whatever they want.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: It was kind of like a comment on, you know,
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: you know, high society, you know, they, they have their
- 1:31:15Speaker 5: own moral code, you know, they, they, They, you.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: Know, there's not consequences.
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: I think it's kind of, you know, maybe a, you know,
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: I like it.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: I like it.
- 1:31:26Speaker 5: It's kind of a class. This thing is kind of
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: a class commentary, you know.
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: Or we're also coming into that teenager era. Yeah. Where
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: teenagers are starting to take over America and having a
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: voice and are being marketed to now. So it can
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: also be kind of that, like, These kids today, look,
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: they don't have nobody's, you know, putting down the nobody's.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Laying down the wall.
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: Nobody's like setting up the rules. So it's like these
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: kids have no consequences. And now look at them running wild.
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: So it can also be interpreted that way. I don't know.
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: That's really what he meant. But but it's definitely like
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: something that gets added into the situation as we get,
- 1:32:06Speaker 4: you know, where it is in the timeline, too.
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: I think it's really cool because it's like, what this
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: movie has is like, you know, you've got like, okay,
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: like the crazy family that loves each other, you know,
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: so you do sort of, you're pretty much on their side,
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: you know, because the, then you've got like the evil,
- 1:32:30Speaker 5: you know, ice queen woman who wants their property and
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: her lawyer, which, you know, you're just going like, well,
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: that's like, Normal society, but that's cold and calculating and
- 1:32:41Speaker 5: there's no heart.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: They're very numbers, efficiency-driven.
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: Just doing business.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: Doing business, right?
- 1:32:49Speaker 4: Taking care of business.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Right, right. And so, had it been just those two sides,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: it would have been very.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Very, you know, it wouldn't have been as good.
- 1:32:58Speaker 5: What makes it cool is they have just like the nice,
- 1:33:02Speaker 5: amiable guy and the nice, amiable girl who are just like, yeah,
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: this is, you know, the live and live, you know, hey,
- 1:33:11Speaker 5: this is fine.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: You know what? You know, go with the flow. You know,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: and that is, that makes it so, that makes it so.
- 1:33:18Speaker 5: Much better for me, you know, where you have, yeah, like,
- 1:33:22Speaker 5: like you have like a representation of like just somebody
- 1:33:25Speaker 5: you might know. So you, it makes you, it kind
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: of gives you an in into the story, you know?
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: He's the fun uncle.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: He's not there to calm down on you with all
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: this dumb rules and money and all that. He just
- 1:33:40Speaker 4: wants to hang out, you know?
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:33:43Speaker 5: He's not judgmental on anybody. And, you know, he wants
- 1:33:46Speaker 5: to date the blonde and they want to go out and,
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: you know, but they all have.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: Very understandable urges and motivation.
- 1:33:54Speaker 5: They're not trying to dispossess anybody or they're not trying
- 1:33:57Speaker 5: to play spider. You know, they're just they're just they've
- 1:34:00Speaker 5: got very normal drives and you go like, OK, all right.
- 1:34:03Speaker 5: So these are these are these are a good entry point.
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: And so what what what drives me crazy about like
- 1:34:10Speaker 5: the Rob Zombie.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: Movie is like there's nobody you were like. connect with
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: you know everybody's.
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: Trashy like he wants everyone to live in the trailer
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: park and be trashy right so you have no entry
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: point you have no norm for anybody else unless yeah
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: the trailer park person yeah there are plenty yeah sure
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: but it's not it's not balancing out your story.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Either Right, right.
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: It's unbalanced.
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: So, you know, you have like in Thousand Corpses, you
- 1:34:40Speaker 5: have like the super nerds, you know, and then you
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: have like.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: Fish boy!
- 1:34:45Speaker 5: Yeah, and then they're so like, you know, and then
- 1:34:49Speaker 5: like all the female characters, they're just screaming the whole time,
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: you know. And so, but you don't get to know
- 1:34:54Speaker 5: them as like people. They're like cartoons, you know. And
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: so this one here, you know, it's not like, you know,
- 1:35:01Speaker 5: the amiable people are like, you know, realistic. I mean,
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: but in the universe of the movie, this is what
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: a normal dude is, you know?
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: And, but it's also just so, it adds.
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: So much humor that no matter what is thrown at
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: that guy, the, the nice guy, he.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Just goes with it.
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: He's just like, it's just like, he's not saying this
- 1:35:25Speaker 5: is weird. You know, you've got the ice queen that
- 1:35:27Speaker 5: can like, Oh, I can't believe, you know, they live
- 1:35:30Speaker 5: like this.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: And he's just like, well, what are you talking about?
- 1:35:32Speaker 4: This is like, I mean, my favorite part, because again,
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: the girls can kind of cover up. If they don't talk,
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: you might not know they're crazy.
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: But Sid is on presentation like weird. So like he
- 1:35:45Speaker 4: sees him crawl out of the dumbwaiter looking like Sid does.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: And he's just like, he's so amused by it. He's like,
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: he's like a big kid and he's like super excited
- 1:35:55Speaker 4: to see him. And like he wants to like. what
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: do you want to do now? Like, he's just like,
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: it's so fun that like, he just loves the idea
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: of this big kid, you know, being able to go
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: have fun. And like, that's sort of, he's like one
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: graduated step up from that. It's like, and he has
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: a job, but otherwise he's kind of the same as Sid.
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: Like he's just like, yeah.
- 1:36:15Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:36:15Speaker 5: It's like a, it's like, for me, it's, that's like,
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: you know, I understand like, you know, dark brooding psychosis
- 1:36:22Speaker 5: and like, you know, acting, uh, selfishly for my own gain,
- 1:36:27Speaker 5: you know, but, uh, but, uh, I like the, uh,
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: almost like he's, he's almost freakishly nice. You know, he's
- 1:36:35Speaker 5: kind of like a freak in his own way. It's like,
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: I wish I could It's kind of like, man, to
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: go one day with that kind of attitude would be like.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: Happy.
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: And disconnected from all your trauma.
- 1:36:50Speaker 5: Yeah, happy and disconnected and not upset about anything or
- 1:36:54Speaker 5: not letting anything upset you. It's just going like, you know,
- 1:36:58Speaker 5: I think I'm learning a lot about life from Spider-Baby.
- 1:37:02Speaker 5: Just going like, these are different examples of how you
- 1:37:05Speaker 5: can handle life and everything.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: And this guy is just like, You know, just like, yeah, yeah, well,
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: all right, let's go do that.
- 1:37:12Speaker 5: I'm going like, yeah, man, he is completely unburdened by
- 1:37:16Speaker 5: psychosis and everything.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: So I'm going like.
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: I mean, the more, yeah, talking about it now, like,
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: I do see, like, he really is almost so weird
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: in his own right that he is closer to our
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: family than anybody else, like, that we come in contact
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: with in this movie.
- 1:37:34Speaker 12: That's it.
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: Like, everybody else is so... you know, in the regular world,
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: like even, even the way Bruno like takes things on,
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: like he's just burdened by responsibility. Like he just wants
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: to take care of these kids and do what's best
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: with them. But like, he's still like a grownup as
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: much as they have in this life of theirs versus
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: uncle Peter is just kind of like a grownup child himself.
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: So like he is almost.
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: As freaky as our three because like, He's.
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: So happy about everything and so seemingly unburdened by regular
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: life that he is almost weird.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: You can see he comes from that family. It's just, yeah, yeah.
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: I mean, it is weird. It is weird. And I
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: go like, yeah. But what's also interesting is if you
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: see the.
- 1:38:23Speaker 5: Interviews with the actor who played him, he seems like
- 1:38:27Speaker 5: he was that guy.
- 1:38:28Speaker 4: He's a pretty weird guy.
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:38:30Speaker 5: But he's very– in the panel discussion, he was a
- 1:38:34Speaker 5: little old, so he was like– but you could tell
- 1:38:36Speaker 5: that's kind of the way he is, and then he
- 1:38:38Speaker 5: would just go off on– stories that had no ending
- 1:38:41Speaker 5: and everything.
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: Crazy tangents.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: Yeah, crazy tangents.
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: He was crazy, but very lovable. Like, even then, he
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: was just like, look at this guy.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: He's awesome.
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:38:51Speaker 5: You would want to buy a car from him. I mean,
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: he was just like so, yeah, I don't know. You
- 1:38:56Speaker 5: would trust him at a car lot. You know, kind
- 1:38:59Speaker 5: of like the game show host personality, and you just
- 1:39:04Speaker 5: go like, you know, wow, you know. It's just, it was, yeah,
- 1:39:09Speaker 5: just the the contrast of how like the ice queen
- 1:39:14Speaker 5: handles the situation versus how he says, and the, and
- 1:39:17Speaker 5: the secretaries, they're just like, you know, uh, very, so
- 1:39:23Speaker 5: it just adds another layer to the, how they present
- 1:39:26Speaker 5: the story that just makes it so much more interesting
- 1:39:29Speaker 5: than it should be.
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: Yeah. Then it has any right to be once again.
- 1:39:34Speaker 5: Then it has any right to be. You're going like,
- 1:39:36Speaker 5: why is this getting it? You're watching this movie going like,
- 1:39:38Speaker 5: why is this getting its hooks in me so much,
- 1:39:41Speaker 5: you know?
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: And pulling you along.
- 1:39:43Speaker 5: You know, we said the first scene where the black
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: character actor comes out and, you know, kind of does
- 1:39:48Speaker 5: an outdated, you know.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: Caricature you know uh.
- 1:39:53Speaker 4: He stood by that though like he was i remember
- 1:39:56Speaker 4: talking about him years ago when i first like he
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: was upset that the changes that happened in this country
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: happened because he's like that's that's my job man like
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: this is what i do so like yeah the shifting
- 1:40:08Speaker 4: in the way the the country looked at you know
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: these portrayals of characters right all of his obviously weird
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: caricatures of black characters that like right he just was like,
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: this is what I do. This is my job.
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: Things change. I don't have a job anymore. Like again,
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: he was very real world.
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: About it all.
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: And he was just like, I'm just acting scared. What's
- 1:40:30Speaker 4: wrong with that?
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: That was the quote they had for him. I was like, yeah.
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: And I don't feel like this version, I think some
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: others in the past are even more atrocious, but like
- 1:40:40Speaker 4: this one, he's just kind of, you know, he's scared.
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: Like it's fine. Like I expected this to actually be
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: a little more dated than, I feel like this was
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: sort of the very end of this run of seeing
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: this kind of performance in a movie.
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: He's just, you know, he's scared. With good reason, because
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: he gets murdered.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Yeah, in the same scene. Absolutely. Yeah, no, it's definitely motivated.
- 1:41:06Speaker 5: And it's really not that bad when you really look
- 1:41:09Speaker 5: at it, but it does set you back for a
- 1:41:11Speaker 5: second and go like, oh yeah, that's something you don't
- 1:41:13Speaker 5: see anymore.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: And also, you know, I don't even know if my.
- 1:41:16Speaker 5: Kids would interpret it the way I interpret it, you know, because.
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: That's... Because it's so far back, yeah.
- 1:41:22Speaker 5: It's so far back that, you know, I mean, they
- 1:41:24Speaker 5: might just see it and just not even think about,
- 1:41:27Speaker 5: you know... racial implementations or something like that. And, and
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: also the, you know, the fact that he was okay
- 1:41:32Speaker 5: doing it. So then, you know, and.
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: Everybody else seemed to really like him. Like the, yeah.
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41:37Speaker 4: Sid's quote was like, man, Tam was so cool. And like,
- 1:41:40Speaker 4: I think they just liked working with him and like,
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: he'd been working since the dawn of cinema. So like,
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: they had probably really cool stories about working on stuff
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: back then. And like, so yeah, the fact that he
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: didn't see anything wrong with what he was doing and,
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: he came at it with a good attitude and like
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: everybody liked working with him. So I don't know. Again,
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: you can take it different ways, but yeah, I think
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: this was the best version of this, you know, being thrown.
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: Into this movie.
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:42:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, yeah.
- 1:42:09Speaker 5: I mean, considering that, you know, some things you watch now,
- 1:42:13Speaker 5: you know, are so much more racist than, but, but,
- 1:42:19Speaker 5: but you, when you watch Jack Hill, he wasn't doing
- 1:42:22Speaker 5: it for like racial reasons. purposes it's really you know
- 1:42:26Speaker 5: he got an actor to do this and it's kind
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: of setting the tone that this is a comedy you
- 1:42:32Speaker 5: know and that you know it's it's comedy mixed with
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: some really freaky horror stuff you know and.
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: Probably was just excited to work with him like he
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: was a successful actor like he worked in like all
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: the charlie chan movies like yeah he was actually like
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: really well known back in his day you know maybe
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: for the wrong reasons but like still i think Jack
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: at the time was probably just like, look who we got.
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: Just excited to work with a successful actor.
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:43:00Speaker 5: To get Chaney and anybody recognizable for your 12-day, $ 50, 000 movie,
- 1:43:04Speaker 5: it's a huge boon for the movie.
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: But that scene where he dies is pretty.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: Fantastic.
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: And even more fun to find out that the ear
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: that they find is an actual prosthetic ear and came
- 1:43:29Speaker 4: from a guy on the crew. The guy on the
- 1:43:34Speaker 4: crew offered that up for them to use. He lost
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: his in Korea. And I think they painted it to
- 1:43:41Speaker 4: match and used it for those purposes. But yeah, that
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: was an actual prosthetic. ear off of a guy on.
- 1:43:47Speaker 5: The crew dude that's a great that i did not
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: hear that story this is the low.
- 1:43:52Speaker 4: Budget kind of movie we're talking about absolutely here use
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: my ear yeah i'm i'm can't hear with this anyway
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: go ahead do what you need to do in the
- 1:44:00Speaker 4: scene it's fine.
- 1:44:01Speaker 5: Yeah yeah it shows you just enough it shows the
- 1:44:04Speaker 5: the reaction and the sounds and the and the the
- 1:44:08Speaker 5: ear coming off and everything it just gives you enough
- 1:44:10Speaker 5: to go like what a horrible way to die you
- 1:44:12Speaker 5: know and uh Yeah, it's great.
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: It's great.
- 1:44:16Speaker 4: Well, and it just sets into motion, like, who this
- 1:44:19Speaker 4: character is, too.
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:44:21Speaker 4: Like, seeing Virginia do her thing, like, that is the
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: rest of the movie. Like, she is Spider-Baby. Like, she
- 1:44:28Speaker 4: is what you're in for the rest of this movie.
- 1:44:31Speaker 4: And then if you're the right kind of person, you're like, oh,
- 1:44:34Speaker 4: this is awesome. Like, this is the best intro to
- 1:44:38Speaker 4: a character ever because that's how she is the rest
- 1:44:40Speaker 4: of the movie. This wasn't her putting on an act.
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: this is who she is. And like, it's, it's just
- 1:44:46Speaker 4: so much fun dealing with her as a, as a character. So.
- 1:44:51Speaker 5: And just that, that wide shot, the fact that they
- 1:44:53Speaker 5: shot her from kind of his point of view, you know,
- 1:44:57Speaker 5: like seeing her come into the, she screams and comes
- 1:45:00Speaker 5: into the room, you know, and you just see her
- 1:45:03Speaker 5: sneaking up to the camera. You just got to give
- 1:45:05Speaker 5: it up to Jack Hill being, you know, just smart
- 1:45:10Speaker 5: enough to know how to, shoot that shot, you know,
- 1:45:13Speaker 5: and just to make it so freaky, you know?
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: It's engrossing as the viewer, but also like points to
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: him and the, I think the director of photography is
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: the one that came up with the plan because number one,
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: they're not supposed to be in that house. It was
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: a dilapidated old house that they at first were just
- 1:45:32Speaker 4: going to shoot the outside shots. Like all the other
- 1:45:37Speaker 4: inside stuff is like in the On the soundstage. But
- 1:45:42Speaker 4: the stuff on the porch, they had to get on
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: the porch and that reverse shot of him in the window,
- 1:45:47Speaker 4: they wanted to get. So they are in there. And
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: then you realize, based on the stories from Sid, there's
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: no power. So they had to set up six reflectors
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: to bounce sunlight from the outside in and around the
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: corner and back towards him so that they had enough
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: light to get that shot of him in the window.
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: Like that's crazy. Again, like I always say this of
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: like the low budget movies are the most creative movies.
- 1:46:12Speaker 4: Like you, you get that kind of impressive thing and
- 1:46:15Speaker 4: probably what led to piecing that shot together is because
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: they had to get it from that window. And like,
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: so like, that kind of a reaction you're not going
- 1:46:24Speaker 4: to get by somebody who's been given, here's $ 30 million,
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: go make your movie and, you know, use whatever technical
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: advantages you need to versus like, I have no money
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: and I want to get this shot somehow. How do
- 1:46:38Speaker 4: we do this? And like, they did it. Like he
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: found a way and like bounced light in there to
- 1:46:44Speaker 4: get that shot. Like, that's amazing.
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:46:47Speaker 5: I mean, now, you know, if you have no money,
- 1:46:50Speaker 5: you just end up green screening the whole darn thing,
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: you know?
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: And so it doesn't have the same.
- 1:46:54Speaker 4: Also looks worse. Like, I don't know. I have such, yeah,
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: there's so many movies I've seen lately. And some of
- 1:47:02Speaker 4: them are actually from, I've noticed like bigger name directors
- 1:47:06Speaker 4: that maybe aren't huge, but like back in the day
- 1:47:08Speaker 4: did really cool movies that are well known. And then
- 1:47:11Speaker 4: now just don't get the budgets they used to. So
- 1:47:14Speaker 4: they try to come up with these ideas. And I've
- 1:47:16Speaker 4: seen two or three like recognizable directors that, do entirely
- 1:47:21Speaker 4: in front of a green screen movies yeah they just
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: don't look good like i know i want to like
- 1:47:27Speaker 4: yay independent film like let's make something but like there's
- 1:47:30Speaker 4: just something about that that like yeah it's hard to
- 1:47:34Speaker 4: do period but especially with a limited budget version of
- 1:47:37Speaker 4: it like it just does not look good and i'm
- 1:47:40Speaker 4: like i'd rather you just go out and shoot something
- 1:47:42Speaker 4: in a field somewhere you know like Find a way
- 1:47:45Speaker 4: to write something that works better in a real location
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: than in front of a green screen.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:47:50Speaker 4: It just looks so bad most of the time.
- 1:47:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:47:54Speaker 4: It doesn't feel real. It legitimately feels like you're standing
- 1:47:56Speaker 4: in front of a green screen.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: Exactly. Exactly. It takes you completely out of the movie.
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: It does.
- 1:48:03Speaker 5: So, yeah, this was like a, yeah, I mean, this
- 1:48:06Speaker 5: is a textbook, great example of like how to make.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: Something with no money, and just, you know, it.
- 1:48:16Speaker 5: Just has A, imagination, and B, it just has, it's
- 1:48:20Speaker 5: a pretty smart script despite it being silly. And D is, it's, uh, it,
- 1:48:27Speaker 5: I was just going like, this is so well.
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: Directed and acted and put together, you know, uh, for something.
- 1:48:32Speaker 4: That way better than it has the right to be for. Absolutely.
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: You wouldn't know. everybody outside of Beverly was super inexperienced.
- 1:48:41Speaker 4: Like Jack specific is like, Hey, I don't know if
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: you noticed, but I didn't know what I was doing
- 1:48:45Speaker 4: as a director. And like, this is Sid's first real movie.
- 1:48:49Speaker 4: And like this, uh, Virginia, like she's never been in anything.
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: Like she's lying about the fact that she's making a movie.
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: She didn't tell her mom when she was leaving the
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: house that she was going to make a movie.
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: She said she was going to school before. Yeah.
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: She said she was going to school. She was 17,
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: you know, or something.
- 1:49:07Speaker 5: So she's like, I'm going to school and sneaking out
- 1:49:09Speaker 5: and hanging out with these showbiz people.
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's so.
- 1:49:15Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's a very instinctual movie, you know? The
- 1:49:21Speaker 5: director was just operating off instinct. And so were the actors.
- 1:49:26Speaker 5: And so you kind of feel that, you know? You
- 1:49:29Speaker 5: kind of feel like this is not overthought. It's really
- 1:49:33Speaker 5: a guy... His first, you know, writing, directing, going at it,
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: you know, with a little bit of money. And his
- 1:49:42Speaker 5: instincts were not being second-guessed or, you know, overthought. And
- 1:49:48Speaker 5: he just said, hey, let's just do it this way.
- 1:49:50Speaker 5: You know, this is the way we can do it.
- 1:49:52Speaker 5: And he just shot it the way he, you know,
- 1:49:55Speaker 5: I mean, I guess, yeah, he went through USC and,
- 1:49:58Speaker 5: you know, had training on it. But, you know, so
- 1:50:01Speaker 5: he had enough technical skills. Uh, education to be able
- 1:50:06Speaker 5: to pull it together, but it doesn't, it doesn't come off.
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: As, uh, over.
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: He, he was just not, he, he hadn't done enough
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: to have any kind of weight to it.
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: You know, and he just, and also, is it cocky
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: about it? Because he's right. He was like hiding that, like,
- 1:50:25Speaker 4: cause he's telling it to Sid decades later. He's just like,
- 1:50:28Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys noticed, but I didn't
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: know what I was doing. And they were like, no, we,
- 1:50:31Speaker 4: we all thought you do what you were talking about.
- 1:50:33Speaker 4: And like, we just, we showed up for work and
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: we did what you said. And like, you know, we
- 1:50:37Speaker 4: had faith in you as our director. And like, so
- 1:50:39Speaker 4: he was covering it up, but like he himself didn't
- 1:50:42Speaker 4: feel like he, he didn't have, you know, uh, this
- 1:50:46Speaker 4: weird cocky attitude that is like, I know how to
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: make a film. Like he was winging it and like it,
- 1:50:51Speaker 4: it works. Like he just, it, everything feels really genuine
- 1:50:55Speaker 4: because of that. Like all the performances and even just
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: the story that he's putting together is just, it's not overthought.
- 1:51:02Speaker 4: It's in the moment and like it works.
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:51:06Speaker 5: And I guess he knew that this was so low budget. He, he,
- 1:51:09Speaker 5: he didn't have a lot of pressure on him. You know,
- 1:51:11Speaker 5: it was like, It wasn't like, yeah, it's like this
- 1:51:14Speaker 5: real estate money. They had like real estate guys giving
- 1:51:17Speaker 5: him like $ 50, 000 and it was like an old buddy
- 1:51:20Speaker 5: of his. And, and like, so, you know, it wasn't
- 1:51:22Speaker 5: like a, you know, it wasn't like making Spartacus, you know,
- 1:51:26Speaker 5: where this has got to go out and make, you know,
- 1:51:28Speaker 5: you know, $ 80 million or we lose money, you know?
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: So it was kind of like he had you, there
- 1:51:34Speaker 5: is a playfulness to it, you know, uh, that, professional playfulness.
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: There's a technical competence because he had a great DP
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: and the acting is elevated and very believable.
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: So it's not like a crappy horror movie that.
- 1:51:58Speaker 5: You would see nowadays where it's like the acting's not
- 1:52:02Speaker 5: good so there's no human connection to anything because everybody
- 1:52:06Speaker 5: sounds like you know uh you know drama school rejects
- 1:52:10Speaker 5: you know uh so everybody's like there's a certain level
- 1:52:14Speaker 5: of professionalism to everything so it it feels like you're
- 1:52:18Speaker 5: watching a movie but there's also such a low budget
- 1:52:21Speaker 5: affair to it that there's a lightness to it and
- 1:52:25Speaker 5: so the tone is perfect for the budget and the
- 1:52:29Speaker 5: for the story and it's really kind of a hat
- 1:52:32Speaker 5: trick it's kind of a miracle.
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: The movie's kind of a miracle.
- 1:52:36Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:52:37Speaker 4: Well, and it's good because that's the thing. I've said
- 1:52:40Speaker 4: even on recent episodes, I was like, I'm so forgiving
- 1:52:43Speaker 4: on older movies. Yeah. Because I know... technically they're dealing
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: with stuff that's different than now but like there's also
- 1:52:52Speaker 4: just a charm to them in that period so it
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: like i could very easily like just like it for
- 1:52:58Speaker 4: the a cheesy old movie but this is above and
- 1:53:01Speaker 4: beyond that like it does that and it is charming
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: for those reasons But then on top of that, there's
- 1:53:07Speaker 4: like these other things going on, some of which were
- 1:53:10Speaker 4: purposefully put in by, you know, the director and writer.
- 1:53:13Speaker 4: And then the other stuff just sort of happened in
- 1:53:17Speaker 4: the moment with these amazing actors. And like, there's just
- 1:53:20Speaker 4: stuff that came together that makes this like greater than
- 1:53:23Speaker 4: the sum of its parts, which were super low budget parts.
- 1:53:26Speaker 4: And like, it somehow became bigger than that, especially as
- 1:53:31Speaker 4: time's gone on. And we all just sort of like,
- 1:53:33Speaker 4: spend way more time focusing on it than we probably
- 1:53:36Speaker 4: were ever meant to.
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:53:38Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:53:39Speaker 5: We, we gotta, we gotta mention like what one thing
- 1:53:42Speaker 5: that happens in this movie that you can't believe you're
- 1:53:46Speaker 5: seeing is the Chaney, uh, monologue, uh, about what he's
- 1:53:52Speaker 5: got to do with the family and, uh, him coming
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: to grips with, you know, uh, his responsibilities and, uh,
- 1:54:02Speaker 5: That powerful performance, which, you know, he had been so discarded.
- 1:54:09Speaker 5: It's almost like the, what do you call it, the
- 1:54:11Speaker 5: Bella thing, you know, all my life, you know, despised.
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:54:18Speaker 4: Most of those guys fell into that. Like, Karloff was
- 1:54:20Speaker 4: the one that, like, had a, he wasn't, like, he didn't,
- 1:54:24Speaker 4: deal with near as much. He came into it more
- 1:54:26Speaker 4: as just a normal actor and then got successful and
- 1:54:29Speaker 4: then just kind of continued acting, but he didn't have
- 1:54:31Speaker 4: the crazy drama in his personal life. Whereas Bella and
- 1:54:35Speaker 4: Lon Chaney Jr. like just had so much they were
- 1:54:39Speaker 4: fighting against, you know, and, and never really had the career, uh,
- 1:54:43Speaker 4: they came back around and like delivered them to a
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: higher status in Hollywood. Like they went out making cheap movies,
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: you know, this one and, you know, Bella, make it out.
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: Ed Wood movies, you know, it's just like, they're just
- 1:54:56Speaker 4: glad to be working at that point. And like, they're
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: dealing with their demons, whether it's in a bottle or
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: a vial, like, you know, these guys are fighting a
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: lot and yet like, they still have these great performances
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: in them. And they just weren't really taken seriously by
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: the industry from, you know, the thing that made them
- 1:55:15Speaker 4: the most famous was the backhanded compliment that came with the, oh,
- 1:55:21Speaker 4: by the way, you're never going to work again in
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: any real capacity because this thing that you're famous for
- 1:55:26Speaker 4: has undercut your entire career.
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 1:55:29Speaker 4: Yay! Like, have fun!
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 1:55:33Speaker 5: And so they were the toast at one point or
- 1:55:36Speaker 5: marketable at one point. And so now they're doing like
- 1:55:39Speaker 5: the bottom of the barrel kind of movies, but even the,
- 1:55:42Speaker 5: you see these moments, these sparks, you know, where you
- 1:55:46Speaker 5: see like the talent that they have, you know, and, uh,
- 1:55:51Speaker 5: despite through all the demons and the struggles and the
- 1:55:55Speaker 5: hard times that, that sometimes they just kept, they still
- 1:55:59Speaker 5: have that lightning in the bottle, you know, and it
- 1:56:02Speaker 5: just feels so good when you see it come out,
- 1:56:04Speaker 5: you know, like, uh, Chaney in the Wolfman is so
- 1:56:09Speaker 5: good and so tortured and, and you really see a
- 1:56:13Speaker 5: journey with that character. You know, I went back and
- 1:56:16Speaker 5: watched all the mummy movies, uh, that he was in
- 1:56:20Speaker 5: and I felt so bad for him because sometimes, and
- 1:56:24Speaker 5: some of those, depending on the one, he had a,
- 1:56:27Speaker 5: like a rubber mask over his face. So it, why
- 1:56:30Speaker 5: did you have even have him in that book other
- 1:56:32Speaker 5: than just put his name on that.
- 1:56:34Speaker 4: Poster yeah they definitely wanted the name recognition.
- 1:56:36Speaker 5: But exactly but you don't you don't even get to
- 1:56:39Speaker 5: see him emote you know like in in in some
- 1:56:42Speaker 5: of them you know it's like a jack pierce kind
- 1:56:44Speaker 5: of thing where you know it's it's glued to his
- 1:56:46Speaker 5: face so you can sort of see some emotion but
- 1:56:50Speaker 5: that was there in his real drinking days you know
- 1:56:52Speaker 5: so the on the commentary of the mummy movies they
- 1:56:55Speaker 5: say like when he's carrying those women up the stairs,
- 1:56:58Speaker 5: I mean, they were terrified that he would just fall
- 1:57:01Speaker 5: over because he was barely walking drunk.
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: It's a good thing he had to drag his leg.
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: Most of the time it kept him steady.
- 1:57:11Speaker 4: He wasn't stumbling as much.
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: Exactly, exactly.
- 1:57:15Speaker 5: So for him to be so plagued by those demons
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: and then for him to get this little thing it's
- 1:57:27Speaker 5: kind of like, and they said in the commentary that,
- 1:57:30Speaker 5: you know, they said like, this is Lon Chaney. He's
- 1:57:32Speaker 5: not going to do it for that amount. And then
- 1:57:33Speaker 5: they were going to give it to John Carradine. And
- 1:57:35Speaker 5: then they said like, well, I don't want John Carradine
- 1:57:38Speaker 5: to get it.
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: So he said, yeah, you know, but.
- 1:57:40Speaker 5: John Carradine, also an amazing actor who just did endless, endless,
- 1:57:45Speaker 5: terrible movies.
- 1:57:47Speaker 4: Because that's what he was offered and like you just
- 1:57:50Speaker 4: again working actors man you just gotta keep working like.
- 1:57:53Speaker 5: You just keep working and so i've seen a hundred
- 1:57:55Speaker 5: john carradine where you know he just says the dialogue
- 1:57:59Speaker 5: and he made the check and uh you know blah
- 1:58:02Speaker 5: blah blah so you don't really expect them to swing
- 1:58:04Speaker 5: for the fences in these paycheck movies that they got.
- 1:58:08Speaker 5: You know, they're just showing up. You know, it's like
- 1:58:10Speaker 5: a Lance Hendrickson movie. You know, you just go like,
- 1:58:13Speaker 5: he's there, it's cool.
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: Sometimes he's amazing and other times he's there. He's doing
- 1:58:18Speaker 4: what he needs to do. He's a professional, you know.
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: He showed up, he played the character.
- 1:58:22Speaker 5: But to see in this movie Lon Chaney get a
- 1:58:25Speaker 5: moment to really shine... you know, it's just, it's such
- 1:58:30Speaker 5: a special thing, you know, just.
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: It shows like he was a good actor and that
- 1:58:35Speaker 4: was always in there. Like no matter what he went through,
- 1:58:38Speaker 4: it was still the core of him is still this
- 1:58:40Speaker 4: talented actor and you give him a chance. You give
- 1:58:43Speaker 4: him even a silly low budget movie. Like you give
- 1:58:46Speaker 4: him a chance to shine and like, there it is.
- 1:58:48Speaker 4: Like it's still there.
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: He still got it, man. He still got it.
- 1:58:52Speaker 5: So, so yeah, that, that was fantastic, you know? And, uh,
- 1:58:58Speaker 5: And Virginia, yeah, just her natural instincts in the scene
- 1:59:04Speaker 5: are so great. You know, the way she plays with
- 1:59:08Speaker 5: the uncle about the spider, playing spider with her. You know,
- 1:59:14Speaker 5: definitely Lolita-type subtext-type stuff. But, you know, A, the guy
- 1:59:19Speaker 5: caught in the chair, you know, he's handling it.
- 1:59:23Speaker 4: As best as you could in that scenario.
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: Like a champ, man.
- 1:59:28Speaker 5: You go like, man, I really like this guy, you know?
- 1:59:33Speaker 5: But her performance is just so instinctually interesting, you know? Yeah,
- 1:59:43Speaker 5: so everybody... That's what I'm saying. The acting is just
- 1:59:46Speaker 5: so much better than what you would expect from something
- 1:59:48Speaker 5: like this, you know?
- 1:59:49Speaker 4: I guess, again, because we just... Talking about both of
- 1:59:53Speaker 4: those people, that is eventually where I wanted to get to,
- 1:59:56Speaker 4: was the fact that neither of them got to see
- 1:59:59Speaker 4: this movie become what it was. That, like, it was
- 2:00:03Speaker 4: shortly after this that Lon Chaney Jr.
- 2:00:05Speaker 3: Died.
- 2:00:06Speaker 4: So, like, I don't even know that it was released
- 2:00:08Speaker 4: by the time he was gone. So, like, his was
- 2:00:10Speaker 4: a really quick turnaround. But then with her, like, she
- 2:00:14Speaker 4: was 36.
- 2:00:15Speaker 3: When she died.
- 2:00:16Speaker 11: Oh, wow.
- 2:00:17Speaker 4: Went on to she did some episodes of like uh
- 2:00:21Speaker 4: dragnet and like she's she's got a couple other acting
- 2:00:24Speaker 4: credits but like she she just didn't become like the
- 2:00:29Speaker 4: biggest thing in the world and never really had a
- 2:00:31Speaker 4: chance to even come back around to see the cult
- 2:00:34Speaker 4: following and then you know even like you know beverly
- 2:00:37Speaker 4: was saying it's a shame she can't you know go
- 2:00:39Speaker 4: to the conventions and like see these like dorky kids
- 2:00:42Speaker 4: still showing up wearing spider baby shirts you know it's
- 2:00:45Speaker 4: like yeah yeah still beloved this many years later and
- 2:00:49Speaker 4: that like she is still like people are still amazed
- 2:00:52Speaker 4: by her performance this many years later and like we
- 2:00:55Speaker 4: just she didn't get a chance to see that so
- 2:00:58Speaker 4: it's it's sad that you know of our you know
- 2:01:02Speaker 4: core family there it's like we've got we've got half
- 2:01:05Speaker 4: of them that just never got to see how beloved
- 2:01:08Speaker 4: this movie became.
- 2:01:10Speaker 5: Yeah absolutely yeah she's uh, really good in it. And,
- 2:01:14Speaker 5: you know, it's just kind of like the proto creepy girl,
- 2:01:17Speaker 5: you know, that, uh, again, ahead of the curve of like,
- 2:01:21Speaker 5: of like the Wednesdays and, you know, the kind of,
- 2:01:24Speaker 5: it's kind of a type now, but it's, yeah. Again,
- 2:01:27Speaker 5: where the movie is ahead of it is like, they,
- 2:01:29Speaker 5: they discovered, yeah, there's a total market for creepy girls.
- 2:01:34Speaker 4: Well, I mean, you don't get Beetlejuice without this. You know,
- 2:01:38Speaker 4: you don't get a movie centering around a creepy girl
- 2:01:41Speaker 4: without this performance. You know, it's like we needed this
- 2:01:45Speaker 4: to sort of set everything in motion that, you know,
- 2:01:47Speaker 4: our creepy girl type becomes a type for a reason.
- 2:01:51Speaker 2: Yes, right.
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:01:52Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: And also I was just thinking, you know, like kind
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: of like the.
- 2:01:55Speaker 5: Whole early 90s grunge Babes in Toyland, Courtney Love look.
- 2:02:00Speaker 5: you know, like grown women basically walking around in baby dresses,
- 2:02:05Speaker 5: you know, that was popular.
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 2:02:07Speaker 5: I just sort of see that kind of echoing spider
- 2:02:10Speaker 5: baby as well.
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: You know, I don't know.
- 2:02:13Speaker 4: Rocking the look.
- 2:02:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: Rocking the look. That's it.
- 2:02:16Speaker 4: That's another one of those that, that was kind of interesting.
- 2:02:19Speaker 4: And you definitely hear Jack reference it quite a few
- 2:02:22Speaker 4: times in the special features stuff on the movie. The
- 2:02:25Speaker 4: fact that like for him, the thing that was so
- 2:02:28Speaker 4: weird was how much young girls were attached to this movie.
- 2:02:32Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 2:02:33Speaker 4: I guess maybe because it's got, you know, of our leads,
- 2:02:36Speaker 4: most of them are young girls. You know, we've got
- 2:02:38Speaker 4: two main characters that are around that same age as
- 2:02:41Speaker 4: the girls that are just getting into horror movies, I guess.
- 2:02:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:02:44Speaker 4: But his take on it, and I think this is interesting,
- 2:02:47Speaker 4: is this movie is about unconditional love. These kids that
- 2:02:53Speaker 4: no matter how much you screw up, no matter what
- 2:02:56Speaker 4: you do, your family loves you. It is, I guess,
- 2:03:03Speaker 4: it just makes you feel okay. It's a security thing that,
- 2:03:06Speaker 4: I guess, you're a dumb teenager, you feel like you
- 2:03:09Speaker 4: screw stuff up all the time. So it's like knowing
- 2:03:11Speaker 4: that no matter what you do, these people still love
- 2:03:15Speaker 4: you even if you just murdered a guy in the
- 2:03:17Speaker 4: front window you know it's like it's that level of
- 2:03:20Speaker 4: taking it you know all the way up to crazy
- 2:03:23Speaker 4: and yet they still love her so like and they're
- 2:03:25Speaker 4: still there to support her as the rest of the movie.
- 2:03:28Speaker 5: Goes on I think that's the I think that's why
- 2:03:32Speaker 5: this movie is so palatable or like why you like
- 2:03:34Speaker 5: that family so much even though they're crazy is that
- 2:03:38Speaker 5: that the love they have for each other that they
- 2:03:41Speaker 5: all like each other what I don't like about the
- 2:03:44Speaker 5: Rob Zombie movies is they're going like, oh yeah, the Fireflies,
- 2:03:47Speaker 5: they all supposed to love each other, but they're nothing
- 2:03:49Speaker 5: but assholes towards each other.
- 2:03:51Speaker 4: That's my issue with that second one. Like it all
- 2:03:54Speaker 4: just kind of works mostly as like a knockoff of
- 2:03:57Speaker 4: this movie and Chainsaw in that first movie. But the
- 2:04:00Speaker 4: second one, Devil's Rejects, they're all just hanging out together
- 2:04:03Speaker 4: and like all they do is bicker. Like it's just
- 2:04:05Speaker 4: them arguing the whole movie. And I'm like, this isn't
- 2:04:08Speaker 4: really fun anymore. Like at least it's kind of fun
- 2:04:10Speaker 4: in the first one, but like, yeah. all they do
- 2:04:13Speaker 4: is argue that second movie. So yeah, I don't get that.
- 2:04:15Speaker 4: Like they argue a little bit here, but it's the
- 2:04:19Speaker 4: very sibling real world version.
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: It's just like needling.
- 2:04:22Speaker 4: At your sister because you know that you can, because
- 2:04:25Speaker 4: that's kind of your job. But when it comes down
- 2:04:27Speaker 4: to it and you know, she's going to be in trouble.
- 2:04:30Speaker 4: If this lady gets away, you're out in the field.
- 2:04:33Speaker 4: With a pitchfork ready to take somebody out because they're
- 2:04:36Speaker 4: going to threaten your sister's safety. And, like, so together,
- 2:04:39Speaker 4: you know, they always come together and back each other
- 2:04:41Speaker 4: when they need to. But anytime you can, like, mess
- 2:04:45Speaker 4: with her, like, that's what you do. That's how siblings work.
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah, so that seems real, you know. So
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: you go, you feel this real love. Like, the zombie movies, you.
- 2:04:55Speaker 2: Go, like, why?
- 2:04:57Speaker 5: These, I would have no contacted any of these people,
- 2:05:01Speaker 5: you know, that's a new thing. They go, I have
- 2:05:03Speaker 5: gone no contact with my parents, you know, uh, all
- 2:05:06Speaker 5: over the internet, you know? Uh, and I go like, yeah,
- 2:05:09Speaker 5: I mean the, the fireflies, I would just be like, man,
- 2:05:12Speaker 5: this is like a toxic environment because there's.
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: No love here, you know?
- 2:05:16Speaker 5: But the, you can see like how you would, uh,
- 2:05:19Speaker 5: kind of like circle the wagons if you were in the, uh, yeah, the,
- 2:05:23Speaker 5: the spider baby family, you know?
- 2:05:25Speaker 4: Definitely. The other thing I was thinking, as they presented
- 2:05:29Speaker 4: that thing with the young girls, the other thing that
- 2:05:31Speaker 4: I thought was interesting, and maybe why girls are sort
- 2:05:35Speaker 4: of drawn to this as they're getting into horror movies,
- 2:05:37Speaker 4: is they're also in charge of the action.
- 2:05:39Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 2:05:40Speaker 4: Both of our female leads are doing what they want, essentially.
- 2:05:47Speaker 4: They might be scolded by the quote-unquote grown-up afterwards, which,
- 2:05:50Speaker 4: because they only have one, but... some of it's because
- 2:05:54Speaker 4: they're not, you know, being watched, but at the same time,
- 2:05:57Speaker 4: it's also just, you're getting this. And that may be
- 2:05:59Speaker 4: more of like a fantasy, like fulfillment type of thing
- 2:06:01Speaker 4: of like, these girls get to do whatever they want
- 2:06:04Speaker 4: and they're following their primal instinct.
- 2:06:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:06:08Speaker 4: More or less of like they, they stalk their prey
- 2:06:10Speaker 4: or capture their bugs. And like, right. If they want
- 2:06:13Speaker 4: to do that, that's what they do. And like, they
- 2:06:15Speaker 4: don't worry about, you know, being scolded till after the fact.
- 2:06:20Speaker 4: They don't worry about being caught because they don't care.
- 2:06:22Speaker 4: Some of it's also they're crazy. But I think it
- 2:06:26Speaker 4: is something that girls could latch onto and be like, well,
- 2:06:28Speaker 4: these girls aren't listening to what some guy says. Even
- 2:06:31Speaker 4: the authority figure, they don't listen to him. They just
- 2:06:34Speaker 4: don't want to get in trouble afterwards. But they do
- 2:06:37Speaker 4: whatever they want to do. And like, that might be
- 2:06:40Speaker 4: why it's so appealing to these like new audiences coming up,
- 2:06:43Speaker 4: specifically young girls that are like getting into horror movies
- 2:06:46Speaker 4: of like, look at these two strong female characters. They're
- 2:06:50Speaker 4: also crazy, but they're strong female characters.
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:06:54Speaker 5: And yeah, you know, there's, there's something, you know, there's like,
- 2:06:58Speaker 5: I guess the veneer of whatever this Lolita kink is,
- 2:07:03Speaker 5: this movie kind of plays with, but also beyond that,
- 2:07:07Speaker 5: Beyond that, you know, there is, like, they're not written
- 2:07:14Speaker 5: as just, like, sex kittens. You know, at one point,
- 2:07:17Speaker 5: it's like, you know, these are, like, grown women or,
- 2:07:20Speaker 5: you know, they're, like, you know, young women that either
- 2:07:27Speaker 5: kind of play in it infantile, but at the same time,
- 2:07:31Speaker 5: what I give the movie credit for It's not like
- 2:07:35Speaker 5: an Anne Margaret.
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: Sex kitten role or anything like that.
- 2:07:39Speaker 5: And they're not here to be subservient to any male character.
- 2:07:46Speaker 5: They really are, as you said, driving the action. You
- 2:07:52Speaker 5: see their relationship with each other.
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: They're not one note. And they have real pathos.
- 2:08:00Speaker 5: You know, they, they have these scenes where they have
- 2:08:03Speaker 5: these fear of like, what's going to happen to our
- 2:08:05Speaker 5: family and these, these changing times and how, how can
- 2:08:10Speaker 5: we just all stay together?
- 2:08:12Speaker 2: You know?
- 2:08:12Speaker 5: I mean, so it's like, it's, it's deep. You know,
- 2:08:16Speaker 5: it's got it's got meat to the bone. It's not
- 2:08:19Speaker 5: just as what they say, the male gaze, you know,
- 2:08:22Speaker 5: and everything, you know, is not is not just here
- 2:08:25Speaker 5: to cater. I mean, it might that might be maybe
- 2:08:29Speaker 5: the rapper to the movie, but the meat of the
- 2:08:32Speaker 5: movie is like you're actually going to get like a
- 2:08:35Speaker 5: real character here.
- 2:08:37Speaker 4: It's like you have that with the other two girls.
- 2:08:40Speaker 4: And like, I kind of forgot about that. The fact
- 2:08:42Speaker 4: that we get the extended scene of the older lady
- 2:08:46Speaker 4: among the family. I mean, she's not old either, but
- 2:08:48Speaker 4: like the grownup of the bunch, like parading around in
- 2:08:51Speaker 4: her underwear for an extended amount of time. And I
- 2:08:54Speaker 4: kind of forgot that was even there. And I was like, oh,
- 2:08:57Speaker 4: well again, they're making their drive-in money. Like again, this
- 2:09:00Speaker 4: is just him going, and then we've got her in
- 2:09:02Speaker 4: her underwear. And so like people will like that. And
- 2:09:05Speaker 4: then even the secretary, like, eventually, like, when she's being attacked,
- 2:09:08Speaker 4: is getting, you know, her clothes torn off. So it's like,
- 2:09:11Speaker 4: if you want that, it's still thrown in there to
- 2:09:13Speaker 4: make your drive-in fans happy. But as far as the
- 2:09:17Speaker 4: younger girls, and specifically, like, Jill in particular, like, the
- 2:09:20Speaker 4: performance with her is amazing because it's there, and you
- 2:09:25Speaker 4: definitely see the dynamic, but it's played, and this is
- 2:09:28Speaker 4: why it's amazing that she has no professional, like, certainly
- 2:09:32Speaker 4: no experience at that point in minimal training ever like
- 2:09:35Speaker 4: school plays at that point but like because she's playing
- 2:09:39Speaker 4: it so realistic that like she doesn't even know what
- 2:09:43Speaker 4: she has Like, an older girl or a girl who's
- 2:09:46Speaker 4: more mature and out in the world, like, very quickly
- 2:09:50Speaker 4: by the time you're a teenager, knows what she has.
- 2:09:53Speaker 4: And the way most girls are, will learn how to
- 2:09:56Speaker 4: use it very quickly. And, like, can manipulate men and
- 2:09:59Speaker 4: can manipulate situations to her advantage if they feel like
- 2:10:03Speaker 4: doing that. Again, not that that's something you should do
- 2:10:06Speaker 4: or be expected to do.
- 2:10:07Speaker 2: But.
- 2:10:09Speaker 4: With her, the way she plays it is almost like
- 2:10:12Speaker 4: she's discovering it for herself in those moments. It's so
- 2:10:16Speaker 4: genuine that she's like, well, I sort of feel like this,
- 2:10:21Speaker 4: but at the same time, I don't understand why or
- 2:10:24Speaker 4: what to do with it or what it's for. But
- 2:10:27Speaker 4: I feel this way, and I've got this guy who's not...
- 2:10:30Speaker 4: I'm calling you uncle, but technically everybody else in this
- 2:10:32Speaker 4: household is like my family, so I don't have anybody to...
- 2:10:35Speaker 4: to use this on. But now here's this guy that
- 2:10:38Speaker 4: I've kept captive here. And I all of a sudden
- 2:10:42Speaker 4: kind of want to make use of my feminine wiles
- 2:10:44Speaker 4: because I can. And like, so it's a very minimal
- 2:10:47Speaker 4: little moment of it, but it's also played innocently because
- 2:10:52Speaker 4: she doesn't even know what she has to be able
- 2:10:56Speaker 4: to use it to her advantage. Like she doesn't even
- 2:10:58Speaker 4: understand it. enough to be manipulating with it. Like she's
- 2:11:03Speaker 4: just sort of discovering it in the moment herself as
- 2:11:06Speaker 4: she's like, you know, also terrorizing him. So it's like,
- 2:11:10Speaker 4: it's such an amazing scene because, because he's playing it
- 2:11:13Speaker 4: so straight and trying to not get roped into this literally,
- 2:11:17Speaker 4: I guess he is. And then on top of that,
- 2:11:19Speaker 4: like she's just coming at it so naturally and some
- 2:11:23Speaker 4: so unknowingly about what it is she has that like it, it, again,
- 2:11:28Speaker 4: it could be way more awkward than it is. I
- 2:11:30Speaker 4: feel like because of that, it doesn't read as creepy
- 2:11:33Speaker 4: to me from like the watching the film standpoint of like,
- 2:11:36Speaker 4: it doesn't feel that way because it's played so innocently
- 2:11:40Speaker 4: that like she's not even using it. Like whether or
- 2:11:43Speaker 4: not Jack was using it for his own drive-in purposes, maybe,
- 2:11:46Speaker 4: you know, that's certainly arguable, but I don't read it
- 2:11:49Speaker 4: that way in the scene and definitely not the way
- 2:11:51Speaker 4: that Jill is playing it. It's such an amazing performance.
- 2:11:55Speaker 5: Absolutely agreed agreed it's like had jack hill been a
- 2:12:00Speaker 5: different director a different kind of guy that could have
- 2:12:04Speaker 5: been a much sleazier scene that you know probably would
- 2:12:07Speaker 5: not have aged well and you go like yeah that's
- 2:12:10Speaker 5: that weird movie that nobody talks about anymore because or
- 2:12:13Speaker 5: only pervs talk about you know i mean there's there's
- 2:12:17Speaker 5: definitely like a you know, just like a, there's a
- 2:12:20Speaker 5: weird kind of kink to it or something like that.
- 2:12:22Speaker 5: But it's also just kind of like, but you are
- 2:12:24Speaker 5: going like, uh, her performance. I just exactly how you
- 2:12:29Speaker 5: describe it. It's more like a school girl crush, you know.
- 2:12:34Speaker 4: And not like, uh, understand herself. Yeah.
- 2:12:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:12:37Speaker 5: And not like a poison Ivy kind of thing, you know,
- 2:12:40Speaker 5: not like a Drew Barrymore kind of.
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: Thing, you know, it's a, so yeah, it's, it's, it's
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: really well done.
- 2:12:46Speaker 10: So you don't feel, you know, it's, it's, uh, You
- 2:12:48Speaker 10: feel like, oh man, I'm watching.
- 2:12:50Speaker 1: A good scene, not like I'm watching exploitation.
- 2:12:54Speaker 5: I'm watching two real characters having this moment, not just...
- 2:12:59Speaker 5: And the lady, I would even say the lady prancing
- 2:13:02Speaker 5: around in her underwear, yeah, that's driving stuff. But also,
- 2:13:06Speaker 5: that's even character motivating. You know, I mean, that's like, like,
- 2:13:10Speaker 5: she's such a.
- 2:13:11Speaker 4: They're the rich weirdos. Like, and she feels like it
- 2:13:14Speaker 4: in that moment.
- 2:13:15Speaker 2: Like.
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:13:16Speaker 4: Because that's the part when, again, I nitpick about real
- 2:13:18Speaker 4: world stuff in every episode. So, like, I'm sitting there going,
- 2:13:22Speaker 4: how many weird negligees did you bring with you on...
- 2:13:27Speaker 4: I mean, you didn't have a lot of bags. So
- 2:13:29Speaker 4: most of what you packed are these. And you're there
- 2:13:32Speaker 4: to be around for... family members you don't know, and children.
- 2:13:37Speaker 1: I'm just like, didn't she find them?
- 2:13:39Speaker 4: What is going on?
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: Did she bring those?
- 2:13:42Speaker 5: I got the feeling when I watched it that she
- 2:13:44Speaker 5: had found them in a drawer or.
- 2:13:45Speaker 4: Something like that. I mean, maybe they were.
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: Either way, it's interesting.
- 2:13:49Speaker 4: But I will say, also as far as being exploitation,
- 2:13:54Speaker 4: the actress, Carol, was into that. Hearing Jack talk about it,
- 2:13:59Speaker 4: he's like, he and she went to Frederick's of Hollywood
- 2:14:03Speaker 4: in the the legit Hollywood version of Fredericks of Hollywood
- 2:14:07Speaker 4: and picked out her quote unquote wardrobe, he said. And
- 2:14:10Speaker 4: she was like super excited to do it because she
- 2:14:12Speaker 4: wanted to go there and shop and look at those. Like,
- 2:14:14Speaker 4: so she wasn't being exploited. She was totally into the
- 2:14:18Speaker 4: idea and, and, you know, being the grownup of the movie,
- 2:14:22Speaker 4: I guess it made it okay if she wanted to
- 2:14:24Speaker 4: get in her underwear. So like that, that was kind
- 2:14:26Speaker 4: of fun. I thought that like, she was totally into
- 2:14:28Speaker 4: that idea. It was like, hell yeah, let's go pick
- 2:14:30Speaker 4: out some lingerie.
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:14:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:14:33Speaker 4: So that made me feel better about that part of
- 2:14:35Speaker 4: it too. Cause I was like, at that point I
- 2:14:37Speaker 4: was like, well, yeah, this is definitely moving into the,
- 2:14:40Speaker 4: you know, exploitation territory. But yeah, I didn't, I didn't
- 2:14:45Speaker 4: feel as bad once I found out that she was
- 2:14:47Speaker 4: totally into the idea.
- 2:14:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 2:14:49Speaker 5: No, she, she still had it. So, I mean, she
- 2:14:51Speaker 5: was like, probably like, you know, dude, I'm still hot.
- 2:14:55Speaker 5: I'm still hot, you know? Um, you know, and so,
- 2:14:59Speaker 5: uh yeah yeah no she uh that was pretty cool
- 2:15:03Speaker 5: but yeah it's a cool character you know the ice
- 2:15:06Speaker 5: queen who's got like you know the secret you know
- 2:15:08Speaker 5: uh side to her you know it's like it's like
- 2:15:14Speaker 5: it's like uh yeah that's kind of cool it was
- 2:15:17Speaker 5: kind of cool and then and.
- 2:15:18Speaker 4: Then that like presentation wise when you're at the dinner
- 2:15:22Speaker 4: table this is how you react and how you respond
- 2:15:25Speaker 4: to things But then when you're behind closed doors, you're
- 2:15:28Speaker 4: also a freak. So don't be so judgy because you're
- 2:15:30Speaker 4: also a weirdo.
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:15:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:15:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:15:34Speaker 5: You like to entertain those, you know, primal instincts, you know.
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: You're not so different.
- 2:15:42Speaker 4: Again, not so far removed from the primal people that
- 2:15:45Speaker 4: live in the basement of this building.
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 2:15:49Speaker 5: And which is also charming that they just have no
- 2:15:52Speaker 5: money for the.
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: you know, freaks, uh, in the, in the pit.
- 2:15:57Speaker 5: So it looks like they have carpet stapled to their faces.
- 2:16:00Speaker 4: You know, it's just, it's just random people that they
- 2:16:02Speaker 4: were like, here, come climb in this hole for me.
- 2:16:05Speaker 4: I need to, I need a favor today.
- 2:16:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:16:08Speaker 5: It was just like, here's some, we'll put some, I
- 2:16:10Speaker 5: don't know, a fake beard on you.
- 2:16:13Speaker 4: I think the one was on the crew that he
- 2:16:15Speaker 4: was just like, Hey, we need somebody else in the hole.
- 2:16:17Speaker 4: Get down there. I feel like he was talking about
- 2:16:19Speaker 4: just wrangling people to be in the, in the shots
- 2:16:22Speaker 4: when they needed people in the basement.
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 2:16:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:16:25Speaker 5: I think it was just hilarious. I mean, just there,
- 2:16:27Speaker 5: the whole thing is, is great.
- 2:16:29Speaker 4: You know, this last time when I was like, uh,
- 2:16:32Speaker 4: watching it, the other thing I started thinking about that's
- 2:16:35Speaker 4: so ahead of its time, it's self-referential horror, right?
- 2:16:40Speaker 2: Yes!
- 2:16:41Speaker 4: Like, it is, like, you didn't see that this early on. No!
- 2:16:44Speaker 4: But it's, like, it's talking about being a fan of
- 2:16:47Speaker 4: classic horror movies in a horror movie. And, like, so you're, and, like,
- 2:16:52Speaker 4: the joke upon joke of, like, you're talking about werewolves
- 2:16:55Speaker 4: across the table from Lon Chaney Jr. Yeah.
- 2:16:59Speaker 1: You give him the line.
- 2:17:01Speaker 4: There's going to be a full moon tonight.
- 2:17:03Speaker 5: Yes!
- 2:17:04Speaker 4: That is like geek territory right there.
- 2:17:07Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 2:17:07Speaker 5: It's basically what all movies are nowadays. If you watch
- 2:17:11Speaker 5: something like The Flash, it's basically like... You know, it's like,
- 2:17:16Speaker 5: it's almost feels like you're at a comic book convention
- 2:17:19Speaker 5: when you watch a movie nowadays.
- 2:17:21Speaker 4: It's just references, which again, this was so different for
- 2:17:24Speaker 4: that time. But like, you can't have Scream without this
- 2:17:28Speaker 4: moment right here. Like, no, you can't get to Tucker
- 2:17:32Speaker 4: and Dale versus evil without this movie. Like this is
- 2:17:35Speaker 4: laying the groundwork for all those self referential horror in
- 2:17:40Speaker 4: on the horror joke kind of movie. And like this
- 2:17:42Speaker 4: one's playing it like for fun but also to the
- 2:17:46Speaker 4: point like of all the squares sitting in the audience
- 2:17:48Speaker 4: like you're just watching it and they're just talking about
- 2:17:50Speaker 4: monsters but like if you're a geek you're like but
- 2:17:54Speaker 4: that's Lon Chaney Jr. like you're getting an extra layer
- 2:17:59Speaker 4: of geekiness right then and there that I'm like that
- 2:18:02Speaker 4: just wasn't really happening until this moment almost like yeah
- 2:18:08Speaker 4: And it was almost like a generational thing is what
- 2:18:10Speaker 4: I was thinking. Like, you know, like there's always been horror,
- 2:18:14Speaker 4: like going back to silent, but you get that first
- 2:18:16Speaker 4: wave of like the universal era. So it's like your
- 2:18:19Speaker 4: Todd Brownings and James Whale, like they were old school horror.
- 2:18:23Speaker 4: They were weirdos because they were weirdos, you know, like
- 2:18:25Speaker 4: they were into this because it's just what appealed to them.
- 2:18:28Speaker 4: And they, from the get go, like they were obsessed
- 2:18:31Speaker 4: with that kind of, you know, horror material to some extent.
- 2:18:34Speaker 4: And you see it come through in their directing, even
- 2:18:36Speaker 4: when they're making less horror friendly. Sometimes it's just how
- 2:18:40Speaker 4: they work. But you get I was thinking like you
- 2:18:43Speaker 4: get the Jack Hill. He's like the first generation of
- 2:18:46Speaker 4: kids that grew up on these classic monster movies like
- 2:18:50Speaker 4: he would have been just the right age to have
- 2:18:52Speaker 4: been watching those as a little kid. So now he's
- 2:18:55Speaker 4: I'm getting out of college and I want to start
- 2:18:57Speaker 4: working on movies myself. So these are his references. Like
- 2:19:01Speaker 4: he's the first generation of filmmaker, much like Corman, that's
- 2:19:06Speaker 4: like coming at this, like equipped with the knowledge and
- 2:19:10Speaker 4: all of those references that they grew up with. And like,
- 2:19:13Speaker 4: this is that first wave of filmmaker that you're going
- 2:19:16Speaker 4: to see doing that.
- 2:19:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:19:18Speaker 4: And it's like that generation just before, then you get
- 2:19:20Speaker 4: to the, like the seventies kids that are like a
- 2:19:22Speaker 4: whole new batch of like film school kids that are
- 2:19:24Speaker 4: doing a different version of references. There may be a more,
- 2:19:28Speaker 4: fancy polished version of references. And then I was like,
- 2:19:31Speaker 4: and then we've already referenced several times in this episode.
- 2:19:35Speaker 4: The next generation that comes after that, that's the big
- 2:19:38Speaker 4: directors are the ones that are obsessed with this as well.
- 2:19:41Speaker 4: So you get Tarantino, you get Rob Zombie, that are
- 2:19:45Speaker 4: definitely fans of these type of movies and influenced by
- 2:19:49Speaker 4: these specific movies. And both of these, I mean, both
- 2:19:52Speaker 4: of them came on board to put together the restoration,
- 2:19:54Speaker 4: put together the soundtrack. Like these guys were so into
- 2:19:57Speaker 4: this movie because like it, it found that again, it's
- 2:20:02Speaker 4: just like geeks referencing geeks. Like it just backtracks of like, Yeah.
- 2:20:07Speaker 4: The horror obsessed film fan that makes a horror obsessed
- 2:20:10Speaker 4: movie that then influences horror obsessed film fans two generations later.
- 2:20:14Speaker 4: Like it's.
- 2:20:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:20:16Speaker 4: It was so interesting looking back at this and like
- 2:20:18Speaker 4: this is kind of that first moment or one of
- 2:20:21Speaker 4: them anyway of them being like, no, this is the
- 2:20:25Speaker 4: kind of movie I grew up with as a kid.
- 2:20:27Speaker 4: And I want to work these references into my movie.
- 2:20:31Speaker 4: But I'm doing it subtle enough that it doesn't stop
- 2:20:34Speaker 4: the movie to make a reference. It works just fine
- 2:20:37Speaker 4: if you're just grandma watching this movie with the kids.
- 2:20:39Speaker 4: But if you're the kid that was like, oh, no,
- 2:20:42Speaker 4: I got that joke. Like, you know.
- 2:20:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:20:44Speaker 4: All of a sudden it adds an extra layer of
- 2:20:47Speaker 4: storytelling going on here. That's like an extra real world
- 2:20:51Speaker 4: geek level that kicks in that like you didn't get
- 2:20:54Speaker 4: before this.
- 2:20:56Speaker 1: That's, that's very well, very well stated.
- 2:20:59Speaker 5: Uh, the, uh, uh, yeah, the, and the fact that
- 2:21:04Speaker 5: the normies in the movie are, are like horror movie fans.
- 2:21:09Speaker 1: Too, you know?
- 2:21:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:21:10Speaker 4: Like, like in there, like the, again, the grandma that's
- 2:21:13Speaker 4: sitting in the, in the audience is also grandma enough
- 2:21:16Speaker 4: to bring her grandkid with her. But like, so it's,
- 2:21:18Speaker 4: it's sharing it with sort of normal people, but some
- 2:21:22Speaker 4: of us still have that, you know, the primal instinct
- 2:21:24Speaker 4: still in there that like, you're still a horror fan
- 2:21:27Speaker 4: because you saw Bela Lugosi a million years ago, you know,
- 2:21:30Speaker 4: it's like, it's, it, it seeps its way into like
- 2:21:34Speaker 4: the mainstream culture.
- 2:21:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:21:36Speaker 4: This, this was that point of it just totally crossing over.
- 2:21:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:21:40Speaker 5: I mean, basically Jack Hill just like basically kind of
- 2:21:45Speaker 5: was the, the Oracle of, that showed where movies are
- 2:21:51Speaker 5: kind of going to go.
- 2:21:54Speaker 1: He's from, I believe it was USC, but it was.
- 2:21:59Speaker 5: Just maybe a class or two before the Lucases and
- 2:22:04Speaker 5: all those other guys. Star Wars is basically his Flash
- 2:22:06Speaker 5: Gordon love letter. And, you know, I mean, that's sort
- 2:22:13Speaker 5: of like what... And Tarantino was, you know, just, like,
- 2:22:16Speaker 5: making love letters to the movies that he grew up loving.
- 2:22:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Hong Kong movies and Black Splendidation that Jack Yule made.
- 2:22:23Speaker 1: That's right. That's right.
- 2:22:25Speaker 2: You know?
- 2:22:26Speaker 5: And so, yeah, I mean, it's so cool to see, like,
- 2:22:29Speaker 5: you know... It's when you watch a movie and... You know,
- 2:22:34Speaker 5: the director that was behind it is, you know, one
- 2:22:38Speaker 5: of us, one of us, you know. And, you know,
- 2:22:42Speaker 5: it can go so overboard, you know, where sometimes, you know,
- 2:22:49Speaker 5: things feel like the movies that are coming out now
- 2:22:51Speaker 5: feel like they're almost like fan fiction, you know, and
- 2:22:55Speaker 5: they don't feel like.
- 2:22:55Speaker 1: They have their.
- 2:22:57Speaker 5: Yeah, they don't have their own voice. They're not adding
- 2:23:01Speaker 5: anything to it. They're just going like, you remember this,
- 2:23:03Speaker 5: you remember this, you remember this. So it doesn't feel like,
- 2:23:09Speaker 5: I don't know, you don't feel like you're making your
- 2:23:10Speaker 5: own movie. It's just kind of like you're doing the
- 2:23:13Speaker 5: Chris Farley interview.
- 2:23:16Speaker 2: Of a movie.
- 2:23:19Speaker 5: But this is like, Hill's definitely got his own point
- 2:23:22Speaker 5: of view coming from it because this is like, you know,
- 2:23:25Speaker 5: this is like referencing those old universal horror movies, but
- 2:23:29Speaker 5: it's very much the template of what the modern horror movie.
- 2:23:33Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:23:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:23:34Speaker 4: You know, setting the standard for what would happen from
- 2:23:37Speaker 4: that point on and didn't even realize it.
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:23:40Speaker 5: It's kind of like the, the, the in between movie,
- 2:23:43Speaker 5: you know, it's kind of like the missing link, you know, between, uh,
- 2:23:47Speaker 5: you know, cave man and, uh, and the modern man,
- 2:23:50Speaker 5: you know, uh, it's, it's really neat, you know?
- 2:23:55Speaker 1: Um, I don't know. It's, you said it best, but
- 2:23:59Speaker 1: this movie is very much like, uh, uh, a movie
- 2:24:03Speaker 1: made by fans for fans.
- 2:24:05Speaker 5: Oh, like another, another group of people that I, I
- 2:24:07Speaker 5: feel like are kind of like this are the, uh,
- 2:24:10Speaker 5: radio silence guys who did, uh, the ready or not movie.
- 2:24:14Speaker 6: And, uh, the.
- 2:24:15Speaker 4: First two reboot screams and right.
- 2:24:18Speaker 1: The reboot scream, the, what'd you call it? The, uh, Abigail?
- 2:24:22Speaker 1: Have you seen Abigail about the ballerina vampire girl?
- 2:24:26Speaker 4: I think they're really good at it.
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 2:24:28Speaker 5: But you watch those movies, you go like, these guys
- 2:24:32Speaker 5: are fans. And they know what they've got, like that
- 2:24:37Speaker 5: perfect tone of also funny, but They can just get
- 2:24:40Speaker 5: the tone right of funny and scary, you know, and
- 2:24:45Speaker 5: make reference back. Even if it's not a direct reference,
- 2:24:47Speaker 5: you know what they're kind of doing, you know.
- 2:24:49Speaker 4: They were the perfect person to hand off Scream.
- 2:24:52Speaker 1: To, you know.
- 2:24:52Speaker 4: It's just like Wes got that joke and did it
- 2:24:55Speaker 4: so perfectly in the first movie and sort of continued
- 2:24:58Speaker 4: it on through the sequels. But like if anybody like
- 2:25:01Speaker 4: because there could have gone wrong in so many ways.
- 2:25:04Speaker 11: Oh, yeah.
- 2:25:04Speaker 4: And some people don't love those movies anyway. And that's fine.
- 2:25:07Speaker 4: But like you can't argue like they got it. They
- 2:25:10Speaker 4: got the joke of it. They got how to continue
- 2:25:14Speaker 4: a story and still make it horror and still make
- 2:25:16Speaker 4: it scary. So, yeah, it's like you see one generation
- 2:25:19Speaker 4: sort of handing the baton to the other. Whether willingly
- 2:25:22Speaker 4: or not, you know, they may be gone at that point.
- 2:25:24Speaker 4: Like that one was. And kind of, you know, the
- 2:25:27Speaker 4: same here. It's like you've got this guy that's like
- 2:25:30Speaker 4: watching directors that weren't even around anymore growing up. And
- 2:25:35Speaker 4: like by the time he makes his movie, he's like, well,
- 2:25:37Speaker 4: you know, I'm inspired by that, but I'm going to
- 2:25:40Speaker 4: do my own thing too. And like he, I think
- 2:25:42Speaker 4: Jack in particular, has like such a different take on it,
- 2:25:47Speaker 4: even though he's not doing anything. Again, like with all
- 2:25:49Speaker 4: of his movies, he's taking... your basic, you know, a
- 2:25:52Speaker 4: horror story and a blaxploitation stories and action movies. And like, he,
- 2:25:56Speaker 4: he takes your standard situation, but he definitely puts his
- 2:26:00Speaker 4: own brand on each and every one of them. So
- 2:26:03Speaker 4: like he, he definitely wasn't like hacking from other people.
- 2:26:06Speaker 4: Like he, he definitely came to it with his own
- 2:26:08Speaker 4: take and his own perspective. And like, you can kind
- 2:26:12Speaker 4: of feel it in this movie. And again, it's, it's
- 2:26:15Speaker 4: reason to go watch more of what he did as
- 2:26:17Speaker 4: a director.
- 2:26:18Speaker 1: I am so excited to go back.
- 2:26:19Speaker 5: I know Tarantino's re-released Switchblade Sisters, which I've never seen.
- 2:26:26Speaker 5: I'm just really interested in going back and seeing his movies.
- 2:26:29Speaker 5: I saw that his last movie was way back in 82,
- 2:26:32Speaker 5: and he seemed real spry in his interviews. I was
- 2:26:36Speaker 5: sad that I was wondering what he was doing for
- 2:26:38Speaker 5: the last 40 years. Why he didn't work after There's
- 2:26:46Speaker 5: something in 82 called Sorceress, which.
- 2:26:49Speaker 4: Which I think I've seen. I looked at this list
- 2:26:52Speaker 4: today and I was like, wait, it's one of those
- 2:26:55Speaker 4: weird ones that I start to mix up with other
- 2:26:57Speaker 4: movies around that time. So I have to go back
- 2:27:00Speaker 4: and double check. But I'm like, I think I remember
- 2:27:01Speaker 4: watching that one and kind of liking it back in
- 2:27:04Speaker 4: the day.
- 2:27:04Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:27:05Speaker 5: I think it looks like from IMDb has name taken
- 2:27:08Speaker 5: off of it. So I'm like wondering if he just
- 2:27:10Speaker 5: had such.
- 2:27:10Speaker 1: A terrible experience. He just goes like that.
- 2:27:13Speaker 4: He just broke the whole deal. He's like, I'm done. Yeah.
- 2:27:15Speaker 5: Yeah he's like i guess he did 20 years and
- 2:27:17Speaker 5: then you know directing and then he's like ah forget
- 2:27:21Speaker 5: it he's like.
- 2:27:22Speaker 4: The one i definitely want to revisit or i guess
- 2:27:25Speaker 4: watch for i don't think because i remember uh talking
- 2:27:28Speaker 4: to beverly and she asked is like have you seen
- 2:27:30Speaker 4: pit stop and i'm like i don't think so pit
- 2:27:32Speaker 4: stop is the one he does after spider baby but
- 2:27:35Speaker 4: it's got beverly and sid in it so they both
- 2:27:38Speaker 4: were in that same movie with him. So I'm like,
- 2:27:40Speaker 4: now I definitely seen what type of movies he puts
- 2:27:43Speaker 4: together and having these same two actors in it. It's like,
- 2:27:47Speaker 4: I definitely want to go watch that one too.
- 2:27:49Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe real.
- 2:27:52Speaker 5: It was, it's like, I'm so happy that, uh, uh,
- 2:27:57Speaker 5: there are things in life that get, held off and
- 2:28:01Speaker 5: not revealed to you until later you know that you
- 2:28:04Speaker 5: didn't you know that there's still things to discover and
- 2:28:07Speaker 5: that there's still you know new things to geek out
- 2:28:11Speaker 5: on you know that it that you know it's not
- 2:28:14Speaker 5: like i'm going like oh i've seen all the movies
- 2:28:16Speaker 5: i want to see you know it's like holy cow
- 2:28:19Speaker 5: there's this whole director that everybody knows about Or he's
- 2:28:23Speaker 5: got an entire filmography.
- 2:28:25Speaker 1: A whole catalog. A whole catalog.
- 2:28:28Speaker 5: I can do a deep dive into Jack Hill now
- 2:28:31Speaker 5: and see how his movies progressed or regressed or his
- 2:28:36Speaker 5: golden years, his top three movies.
- 2:28:39Speaker 1: You know, and everything.
- 2:28:40Speaker 5: It's kind of like discovering a new band, you know,
- 2:28:42Speaker 5: and you go like, Oh crap. Or like a new,
- 2:28:45Speaker 5: you know, a new author. You go like, Oh shit,
- 2:28:47Speaker 5: he's got 72 books that, you know, if I want
- 2:28:50Speaker 5: to get dig into all of this, dude, I've got
- 2:28:53Speaker 5: like an, I've got like the next five years set,
- 2:28:56Speaker 5: you know, of what I'm going to be doing, you know,
- 2:28:59Speaker 5: as far as pop culture goes, you know? So, um, yeah,
- 2:29:03Speaker 5: I mean, I think it's real exciting. It's, it's, it's
- 2:29:05Speaker 5: cool that, you know, There's just new things, always new
- 2:29:09Speaker 5: things to discover, you know, and get on with, you know.
- 2:29:14Speaker 4: I think that's a good direction, rounding it out. You know,
- 2:29:19Speaker 4: we've hit the specifics and the grander points and everything.
- 2:29:24Speaker 4: We can be like the little girl at the end
- 2:29:26Speaker 4: and be ready to go be crazy in the future.
- 2:29:29Speaker 4: I do like that. They set that up so perfectly.
- 2:29:33Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. How does this movie even work?
- 2:29:36Speaker 5: I mean, they open it with the guy addressing the camera. Like,
- 2:29:41Speaker 5: that's such a cheesy thing. And you don't even care.
- 2:29:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:29:46Speaker 4: It would get worse from there but yeah somehow it's
- 2:29:49Speaker 4: like that silly opening that's like yeah the let's see
- 2:29:53Speaker 4: it's the dictionary of rare and peculiar diseases yeah.
- 2:29:57Speaker 1: Yeah i mean it just go like what.
- 2:29:59Speaker 4: You're like flip over a few i think see what
- 2:30:01Speaker 4: the one i've got because i've got something something ain't
- 2:30:03Speaker 4: right with me so let's.
- 2:30:04Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah yeah.
- 2:30:07Speaker 4: So yeah we get to savagery and cannibalism and It
- 2:30:12Speaker 4: seems like it shouldn't work. And yet somehow bookending it
- 2:30:15Speaker 4: with the, it makes it okay. Because again, we have the,
- 2:30:19Speaker 4: this is what needs to be done for the kids moment.
- 2:30:22Speaker 4: And it makes it a heartfelt version of this story.
- 2:30:25Speaker 4: But then we also kind of want a cheesy horror
- 2:30:28Speaker 4: movie stinger at the end. So we set it up
- 2:30:30Speaker 4: that like, well, the family's not really dead. There's our
- 2:30:35Speaker 4: new little spider baby right there waiting for us.
- 2:30:38Speaker 1: That's right. The creepy girls are internal.
- 2:30:40Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 2:30:41Speaker 4: Creepy girls will continue on.
- 2:30:43Speaker 1: That's right. That's right.
- 2:30:45Speaker 5: I am pissed when I see a horror movie and
- 2:30:47Speaker 5: it doesn't have a stinger. I mean, I, I, I
- 2:30:50Speaker 5: need to know that the evil progress is still out
- 2:30:53Speaker 5: there in some form and everything.
- 2:30:54Speaker 4: Especially a movie like this. It's like, this is such
- 2:30:57Speaker 4: a fun movie that you want to set it up.
- 2:31:00Speaker 4: And like, yeah, they could have come back and done a,
- 2:31:03Speaker 4: you know, at least a spiritual sequel if they wanted to.
- 2:31:06Speaker 4: But yeah, I, I, Maybe it's best that they didn't
- 2:31:08Speaker 4: because who knows what would have happened.
- 2:31:10Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:31:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's such a fun way to wrap up that movie.
- 2:31:16Speaker 5: And just a nightmare would be somebody with a little
- 2:31:20Speaker 5: bit of clout remakes this. And then they make three
- 2:31:24Speaker 5: more sequels and then a TV show. And then, you know,
- 2:31:28Speaker 5: I mean, it's.
- 2:31:29Speaker 4: Like, it's like, they kind of did that.
- 2:31:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 2:31:33Speaker 1: I guess so.
- 2:31:33Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:31:33Speaker 1: I guess so.
- 2:31:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:31:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:31:35Speaker 4: I have not watched that one. I watched the trailer. Ah,
- 2:31:39Speaker 4: more power.
- 2:31:39Speaker 1: What do you do?
- 2:31:41Speaker 4: A remake of this like a couple of years ago. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:31:46Speaker 4: And that was, that's why I didn't go down that road.
- 2:31:49Speaker 4: Cause I was like, in preparation originally, I was like,
- 2:31:51Speaker 4: all right, maybe I'll watch the third. And I was like,
- 2:31:54Speaker 4: I watched the trailer. I was like, no, I'm just
- 2:31:56Speaker 4: going to be sad. Like, it's just going to upset me.
- 2:31:59Speaker 4: It is fun that Beverly has a cameo in it.
- 2:32:02Speaker 4: So they did bother to work her in as a,
- 2:32:05Speaker 4: as a nice little, little tie in there.
- 2:32:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:32:07Speaker 4: But watching the trail. And again, it was almost like
- 2:32:10Speaker 4: our green screen discussion. It was like, of the, I
- 2:32:13Speaker 4: don't even know that it's green. I'm just like the,
- 2:32:16Speaker 4: it doesn't feel the same. Like I'm so forgiving of,
- 2:32:20Speaker 4: these older movies that, that have a low budget and
- 2:32:23Speaker 4: somehow just put a spin on it and make it work.
- 2:32:26Speaker 4: And then like something about the current movies that like,
- 2:32:29Speaker 4: there are tons of low budget movies that I really love,
- 2:32:32Speaker 4: but it is an uphill battle, man. Like there's something
- 2:32:35Speaker 4: that just doesn't always translate. And I was afraid that's
- 2:32:38Speaker 4: where we're going. So I avoided it, but, Oh, I
- 2:32:41Speaker 4: didn't realize, I.
- 2:32:42Speaker 1: Didn't realize there was a remake out there. It sounds
- 2:32:44Speaker 1: very much.
- 2:32:45Speaker 5: Like, You know, another very similar movie with a very
- 2:32:49Speaker 5: similar terrible remake, Carnival of Souls, you know, and everything.
- 2:32:54Speaker 5: The first one's all charm and wonderfulness and perfection. And
- 2:32:59Speaker 5: then there is a Wes Craven Presents remake that nobody remembers.
- 2:33:04Speaker 4: Yeah, for a reason, I'm sure.
- 2:33:06Speaker 1: For a reason.
- 2:33:07Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 2:33:08Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 2:33:08Speaker 5: No, I was on another podcast and somebody talked about
- 2:33:11Speaker 5: it and I got very upset.
- 2:33:13Speaker 4: That does sound like it. I know you're quite a
- 2:33:15Speaker 4: fan of the original as I recently became, I avoided
- 2:33:19Speaker 4: that one for a long time for some reason. And
- 2:33:21Speaker 4: then watching it went, Oh no, this is amazing. So like, yeah, yeah.
- 2:33:24Speaker 4: Carnival of souls. Another one of those that fell through
- 2:33:27Speaker 4: the cracks and fell in the public domain. And now
- 2:33:30Speaker 4: you can buy a cheap copy anywhere and you should,
- 2:33:32Speaker 4: because it's.
- 2:33:32Speaker 1: An awesome movie. Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 2:33:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:33:36Speaker 1: Anyway, anyway. So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:33:38Speaker 5: And another movie that was on that darn, uh, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible,
- 2:33:43Speaker 5: vhs that i had i was like going like all
- 2:33:45Speaker 5: these movies are supposed to be horrible but that two
- 2:33:47Speaker 5: of them are now my favorite movies some.
- 2:33:49Speaker 4: Of these are classic films.
- 2:33:54Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely anyway.
- 2:33:58Speaker 4: Man so yeah i i was just glad to put
- 2:34:02Speaker 4: this together i did once again thanks to you know
- 2:34:07Speaker 4: definitely beverly most recently then Sid, wherever you are now
- 2:34:11Speaker 4: in the great beyond, I hope you're enjoying, uh, watching
- 2:34:15Speaker 4: horror movies. I don't know. That's what's going to go
- 2:34:17Speaker 4: on in my great beyond.
- 2:34:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:34:18Speaker 4: Watch a bunch of cheesy horror movies. So I hope
- 2:34:21Speaker 4: Sid knows how much he was loved and like, you know, that,
- 2:34:24Speaker 4: that the fans are still out there talking about him.
- 2:34:26Speaker 4: Cause I will, I will talk about Sid any chance
- 2:34:28Speaker 4: I get. So, and, and that was my putting this together.
- 2:34:32Speaker 4: I was like, God, it's, it's sort of, this is
- 2:34:34Speaker 4: how I was, cause I was like, well, I need
- 2:34:36Speaker 4: to go and get it done or I'll never get
- 2:34:38Speaker 4: it done. And like, you could piece together a bunch
- 2:34:40Speaker 4: of other stuff along the way, but I was like, no,
- 2:34:43Speaker 4: this is the closest we're going to get to a
- 2:34:46Speaker 4: merry family reunion.
- 2:34:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:34:48Speaker 4: Like we've got three kids, two of which are represented here.
- 2:34:52Speaker 4: The other one never got a chance to even talk
- 2:34:54Speaker 4: about it. Like I've never even seen an interview with
- 2:34:57Speaker 4: her talking about this because it was still kind of
- 2:34:59Speaker 4: a lost movie at that point. So yeah. you really
- 2:35:02Speaker 4: won't find any of the third kid. So it's like,
- 2:35:04Speaker 4: this is the closest we get. The maddest family reunion
- 2:35:07Speaker 4: ever told. So here we are. We've got two of
- 2:35:11Speaker 4: the three kids together, giving their take on it, and
- 2:35:14Speaker 4: then us rambling about how amazing it is.
- 2:35:17Speaker 1: Yeah, for real. I'm enamored with this movie, man.
- 2:35:20Speaker 4: Yeah, that is what brought it all together. So I'm
- 2:35:23Speaker 4: glad we got a chance to talk about it in
- 2:35:26Speaker 4: both ways. acknowledge how amazing it is because it is
- 2:35:29Speaker 4: one of those that is so much better than it
- 2:35:31Speaker 4: has any right.
- 2:35:32Speaker 5: To be absolutely yeah it's it's shocking it's shocking how
- 2:35:37Speaker 5: good this movie is.
- 2:35:40Speaker 4: And yet fun. Like it'd be different if it were
- 2:35:42Speaker 4: just like a classic film that's really well made, which
- 2:35:45Speaker 4: it is to some extent, but it's also so fun
- 2:35:49Speaker 4: and so enjoyable. And the characters are so likable, even
- 2:35:52Speaker 4: though they're murdering people, like it shouldn't be this much fun.
- 2:35:55Speaker 4: And yet it is. So it's, it's, it's truly, yeah.
- 2:35:59Speaker 1: Lightning in a bottle, you know? And so it's great
- 2:36:01Speaker 1: when you find these things. So definitely. Yep.
- 2:36:06Speaker 4: Anything else to pass along? I'm sure we'll be back
- 2:36:09Speaker 4: talking about some other movies in the near future. But
- 2:36:12Speaker 4: for now, let's let's round this one out.
- 2:36:15Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:36:15Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:36:16Speaker 1: Yep.
- 2:36:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:36:18Speaker 4: Well, once again, thank you to Sid and Beverly and
- 2:36:21Speaker 4: anyone else who has decided to come along on this journey.
- 2:36:24Speaker 4: And thank you for showing up. And again, I knew
- 2:36:28Speaker 4: you were the other person who would hold the other
- 2:36:31Speaker 4: side of this craziness.
- 2:36:33Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:36:33Speaker 4: Yeah. piece this together with me so thank you for
- 2:36:37Speaker 4: recording this wonderful episode.
- 2:36:39Speaker 5: No no thanks for having me on i i wanted
- 2:36:42Speaker 5: a chance to talk about it so yeah.
- 2:36:45Speaker 4: All right otherwise that about does it we will turn
- 2:36:47Speaker 4: next time same geek feed thanks for listening.
