- 0:00Let's get pumped up. It's time for Yukon basketball. And we have Dan
- 0:04Hurley, the head coach, with us in studio. We're here at the
- 0:10Duncan Music Lounge at iHeart Headquarters. It's hard to keep the crowd down when
- 0:15you show up. I've noticed this year. This year, we're gonna talk
- 0:20about this year. We're gonna talk about last year a little bit. We
- 0:23have Dan Hurley for the hour with us. We've got a live studio audience.
- 0:26We'll get a few questions from them, we'll have a we'll have some
- 0:29you know, giveaways and things like that between the commercial breaks. So everybody
- 0:33hang tough. We're gonna coach talk to a coach early about everything. Big
- 0:37East NCAA Bob Knight just passed away, so that that was a real loss
- 0:42for the coaching fraternity. Let's start the coach back where you were last year
- 0:48in the spring in Houston, Confetti pouring down. Have you ever experienced anything
- 0:54like that in your life? Anything? I mean just the wedding day.
- 1:02But there wasn't that much confetti was What's that? It wasn't that much confetti
- 1:04was It was just the feeling of elation? Yeah? Right, Andrea wherever
- 1:11you are, she's I don't know if she's listening, but it'll get back
- 1:14to her. By the way, she was a pretty good co star down
- 1:19there in Houston. She took on everything and then anybody who didn't respect yukon
- 1:23basketball. I liked that. Yeah, I mean listen that that was just
- 1:27that whole the relief from winning the Iona game. I think like every win
- 1:34after that just you know, just kept feeling better and better. And then
- 1:38that was the most you know, nervous I probably was for any game the
- 1:42whole season. Was the Miami was the San Diego State game, because like
- 1:48we knew we had the best team, you know, we had blown through
- 1:51the tournament, and the pressure to like not lose that game because that sucked
- 1:56if we would have lost the you know, that national championship game after dominating
- 2:00a tournament like that. Yeah, And usually you talk to coaches who've been
- 2:02through that tournament many times, there's always one game. I think PJ.
- 2:07Carlissimo said this to me in a pregame interview one day. He said,
- 2:09there's always one game. It can knock you off the railings and it could
- 2:14be over for you. Maybe you don't play, well, maybe the other
- 2:15team has a super game that didn't happen, except when San Diego State got
- 2:20within five late in that game. I'm calling the game obviously, so I
- 2:24can't think too much, but I'm just thinking, oh, my goodness,
- 2:27five points. I mean, anything could happen. Yeah, I mean,
- 2:30we just we went into those games. Really for a majority of the year,
- 2:35we were like one of the best offenses in the country, and then
- 2:39we were the best offensive rebounding team in the country, and we made threes,
- 2:44like we could post you up, and our defense was elite and you
- 2:50know, and we were a great rebounding team, and we got a great
- 2:52culture, and we had great leadership. We were just efficient everywhere. So
- 2:58we went into those games just you know, knowing that we were going to
- 3:00control how the game was going to go. We really and the preparation is
- 3:06great. I got great coaching staff, So everything just felt really automatic at
- 3:10that time of a year. And that's hard to say because you've been doing
- 3:14this for a bunch of years now. There's really no automatics. Well,
- 3:16sometimes your team, like I've had, like you know, teams that weren't
- 3:21as good offensively didn't have maybe the shooting or different components, or maybe the
- 3:27design wasn't great. It's it's a lot more stressful when you suck on offense.
- 3:31Yeah, I can't say, but that's been the trademark of your teams.
- 3:38I mean, going back, I know Wagner was listening to that,
- 3:40but Roady, I mean, when you guys were good, you were lighting
- 3:44it up and running up and down the court. It was exciting basketball.
- 3:47Now you're doing that here at Yukon. So when you go out and look
- 3:51for players to play for your teams, are you looking for those kind of
- 3:53guys? And how hard is it to find people who can play like that?
- 3:58It was the the New Mexico State game, Like losing that game and
- 4:03just and then how we lost big games that year just offensively, we didn't
- 4:10have enough shooting. It's like we hadn't really adapted all the way to the
- 4:15modern game. At the offensive end, our culture was air tight. Our
- 4:19guys played elite defense. Uh, you know, we played together at a
- 4:24high level like you could now we could. You could tell when you watch
- 4:27us play, you watch how our bench reacts like we're very connected and cult
- 4:31like more than we're team like. We all think the same, We all
- 4:35talked the same, We're completely dialed into each other. But for me as
- 4:42a head coach too, you know, to become an elite head coach,
- 4:45I had to you know, look look myself in the mirror and and change
- 4:49some things offensively that we were doing personnel wise and the scheme that we were
- 4:56running. And we worked, you know, so hard on that and it
- 5:00definitely paid dividends. Dan Hurley with US Yukon head basketball coach, national champ
- 5:04Mike Crispino with him, I remember you said something a year ago in the
- 5:09locker room, not for publication, not for broadcasts at the time, but
- 5:12you say, we got to get into the portal. We got to find
- 5:14some grown up guys, because we're playing against guys that are grown ups in
- 5:19their mid twenty some of them, and it's hard to compete against that kind
- 5:25of physicality. And you were able to do that last year and putting your
- 5:28roster together. Yeah, it's just we knew we had a Dama and Jordan
- 5:30and Andre and that they were all entering close to their prime together. You
- 5:35know, Jordan flashed as freshman year. Andre you know, it was just
- 5:41such an incredible, unique player and then a Dama. They're all in their
- 5:45prime, and we knew we had Donnava, we knew we had Alex But
- 5:49yeah, I mean I just felt with where we were at as a program,
- 5:54if we were going to become second weekend Final four National championship caliber,
- 5:57like we needed to go into portal like like literally as quickly as we can.
- 6:03And after we got back from Buffalo and we knew we needed shooting,
- 6:08I think it was more even less so about like bringing veterans, but just
- 6:14shooting guys that could process the game on offense. And then the type of
- 6:17personalities that when March hits, they're not gonna shrink when when the lights get
- 6:24bright, you know, like Joey California, he had a lot of swag,
- 6:28you know, and Naheim. You know, he made big shots of
- 6:31Virginia Tech when he played there. So and we knew we were kind of
- 6:35our first round game was going to be the most pressure back game of any
- 6:40of our coaching lives or playing. There was nothing that touched the pressure going
- 6:46into that Iona game. Yeah, losing twice in the first round, you
- 6:48mentioned it a number of times. That hurts. I mean, I know
- 6:53you were you were in pain there and until you get over the hump,
- 6:56and then you got Rick Patino who's got iona going, and then they get
- 6:59the lead at halftime. Uh, they played well in that first half,
- 7:02but what happened at halftime there, because you obviously had to get in there
- 7:05and say, fellas, it ain't happening again here today. Yeah, for
- 7:09you guys too. I don't I take responsibility for the bubble Maryland game loss,
- 7:16but not as much as the New Mexico State you were there for that.
- 7:20That was crazy, that bubble. I know, it's like low accountability.
- 7:27Everyone's like so quiet. It wasn't his fault, epic. I don't
- 7:32know what you're going to say next, No like that get like to me.
- 7:35There were two different situations that that year. Was it was tough and
- 7:40some teams didn't handle the bubble, and Book was you know, Book was
- 7:45never really got back to full strength with the elbow. But that New Mexico
- 7:49State thing, I mean, if there's a game you think about more over,
- 7:53probably wasn't a day that went by that we didn't think about that loss.
- 7:57And me and Kamani just started talking even last summer about like what the
- 8:01pressure going into that first game was going to feel like, like, you
- 8:05know, start mentally preparing for that, and and we I thought it was
- 8:11a great draw. Though they played fast, they pressed, the court was
- 8:16going to be open. It was you don't want to play teams that play
- 8:20slow, slow tempo, real discipline system, matchup zone. The first half,
- 8:28the way they were playing was just not a sustainable thing. And we
- 8:30were playing very well, so I thought we and we would have scored a
- 8:33hundred, We would have scored one hundred a couple of times, but we
- 8:37blew everybody out so well, then you had to face Saint Mary's. We're
- 8:41gonna go to commercial break, we're gonna get back talk a little bit about
- 8:43that. And I mean, you played some good teams. Come on,
- 8:45Miami, they were the hottest team in that tournament, I thought. And
- 8:48Gonzaga their history, phenomenal history in Arkansas. I mean, they're on the
- 8:54rise right the last couple of years. All that coming up. We'll continue
- 8:56with the Dan Hurley as we bring you the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show hereon leave here
