- 0:00What's up guys? Welcome back to the Sacred Men
- 0:02YouTube channel. This channel exists to equip and
- 0:06train and encourage Christian men to be strong, virtuous men
- 0:10in a weak and degenerate culture.
- 0:13I'm the host Pastor Justin Dean and it's a joy to be with you
- 0:16today. And you can hopefully you can
- 0:18notice right away that number one, my face is pretty beat up
- 0:22from jiu jitsu. I get my face just destroyed
- 0:27with the ghee but I'm still here podcasting for you and you can
- 0:32kind of see maybe. I got new glasses and these
- 0:35glasses are supposed to be anti glare and so I can already tell
- 0:39they're they have less glare than they did before.
- 0:41So some of you told me that my glasses drove you crazy because
- 0:46of the glare. Last year I got glasses for the
- 0:48first time, didn't know anything about it, got just the regular
- 0:51ones. Now I've got anti glare.
- 0:53Boom, trying to improve the podcast.
- 0:56I've also got new streaming software and some new equipment
- 1:00behind the scenes. Hopefully things are going to be
- 1:02a little bit higher quality and sound a little better for you,
- 1:05and we're doing our best over here.
- 1:07Now. Today's episode is a little bit
- 1:11different than we've done in the past.
- 1:12I don't really have a script, didn't really write anything
- 1:15because I've been thinking a lot about, obviously we've been
- 1:20talking about virtue, the four cardinal virtues.
- 1:23We broke them down. We want to be virtuous men.
- 1:25We got to know what that means. But in order to become virtuous
- 1:29men, one of the things that we actually need, we need examples.
- 1:35We need virtuous men who come alongside of us and show us what
- 1:40that virtue looks like right now.
- 1:42We can do that by going to the Bible and and learning from
- 1:46things in the Bible, and that's good and we should do that.
- 1:50But there's the power to story, right?
- 1:54There's a power to even movies that can show us a virtuous man
- 1:59and we can want to emulate it. I remember the first time I
- 2:02watched Rocky as a kid. I watch, I don't remember the
- 2:05first time. I just watched it so many times.
- 2:07I remember watching it and, and like learning about
- 2:10determination, learning about working hard and out, working
- 2:14your opponent and having grit and, and being inspired by that,
- 2:18like that, watching that inspired the way that I trained
- 2:21for, you know, competition and stuff.
- 2:24And so I want us to be able to find good examples and we can
- 2:30find good examples by reading, you know, biographies and
- 2:33autobiographies and, and we can find good examples in scripture.
- 2:37But there's one example that anybody that knows me knows that
- 2:42motivates me, that I'm, I'm inspired by, and it is The Lord
- 2:49of the Rings. Now, immediately people who've
- 2:52just seen the movies or something that they, oh, you
- 2:54know, it's a myth or it's fiction and how could it?
- 2:58There's something about reading The Lord of the Rings that makes
- 3:02me want to be a more virtuous man.
- 3:06There's all kinds of virtuous men in Lord of the Rings.
- 3:09And there's people that lack virtue in Lord of the Rings.
- 3:13There's wicked, evil people. CS Lewis once commented about
- 3:17Lord of the Rings. He said he loved the novel
- 3:20because the people's insides were displayed on their outside.
- 3:27So the elves, you know, they're, they're virtuous and kind of,
- 3:32you know, I wouldn't say more morally pure.
- 3:35And so they're brilliant on the outside.
- 3:37And orcs are demonic on the inside.
- 3:40And so they're insides look like they're outsides.
- 3:42They're outsides look like they're insides.
- 3:45So it's most of the time it's pretty easy to spot a good guy
- 3:48and a bad guy. So what I want to do today is I
- 3:54want to talk a little bit about Lord of the Rings.
- 3:56I just finished the Return of the King.
- 3:59I mentioned this in a sermon a few weeks back, sat down.
- 4:04I was, it was cold around here. So I sat down and I just busted
- 4:07out the last half of The Return of the King and I was just
- 4:11deeply moved and inspired in a way that I haven't been before.
- 4:14I've probably read the Return of the, I've probably read The Lord
- 4:16of the Rings 10 times. I've read it more than any other
- 4:21fiction book. I don't like fiction books.
- 4:24Most of the time, the way my brain works, I just want to
- 4:27finish a book. I want to get it.
- 4:29I want to understand what it, what it's about, and then it is
- 4:33what it is. You know, I, I kind of eat
- 4:35fiction books a little bit like candy.
- 4:36They don't really do much for me, but The Lord of the Rings is
- 4:40different. It's something I come back to
- 4:42over and over and I kind of never stop reading it.
- 4:46I finished Return of the King and I walked upstairs and I
- 4:48grabbed Fellowship of the Ring and I came back downstairs and I
- 4:50kept reading and there's something I've learned.
- 4:57The Lord of the Rings is a long book.
- 5:00It's a very long book. It's going to take you weeks,
- 5:03months, maybe a year, depending on your reading speed and how
- 5:08much, how often you read it to get through it.
- 5:11And the first time you read through it, you're going to be
- 5:15like, what is this? You know, it's, it's going to be
- 5:17like, man, he's really descriptive about scenes and
- 5:20flowers and all, all kinds of things.
- 5:24And you're, if you're like me, you're going to be like, get to
- 5:27the point, get to the fights, get to the battle scenes, get to
- 5:31the climax, get to these things. And you're, you're just wanting
- 5:34to read it like you would watch a movie and just kind of gobble
- 5:39it up and then walk away. But this isn't that type of
- 5:42book. It's a type of book that the
- 5:46more time you spend in it, the more it changes you as a person.
- 5:51The darkness gets darker, the brightness gets brighter, the
- 5:58beauty gets more glorious. The virtue starts standing out
- 6:03at you. You start like, really caring
- 6:06about the characters and understanding them more and
- 6:10more. You start seeing yourself in
- 6:13some of the good guys, some of the bad guys.
- 6:15You start picking up things that you have never noticed before.
- 6:20And I started thinking, like developing virtue, becoming a
- 6:24Virtuous Man. I really think that you can.
- 6:29It's like reading through The Lord of the Rings.
- 6:31You know, it's a slow, kind of arduous process and then you get
- 6:35through the book and then if you go back again and read it again,
- 6:40it's, it's like the process of developing virtue, man.
- 6:43Like you, I I think there's some virtues that you can develop
- 6:46just by reading it because you're becoming attuned to light
- 6:50and dark goodness and evil. You're becoming attuned to the
- 6:56deceit of the enemy. You're becoming attuned to how
- 7:00compelling wickedness and darkness and the evil use of
- 7:05power can be, and you also start to crave goodness, truth, and
- 7:09beauty. You start to see how they're
- 7:12actually more compelling, and though they're not easily
- 7:15accessible, you don't just give yourself over to goodness,
- 7:18truth, and beauty. You can give yourself over to
- 7:20wickedness, but you actually have to pursue virtue.
- 7:23You have to actually have to grind and go through the battles
- 7:25and go through the hardship and go through the difficulty and
- 7:28strive with all your might and face insurmountable odds and
- 7:33insurmountable, you know, enemies and think that you're
- 7:36not going to win. And if God doesn't show up, then
- 7:41you will lose. And over and over and over.
- 7:44In the book, God shows up now. It doesn't show up.
- 7:47He doesn't show up as God. He shows up as the author's
- 7:51prerogative. He shows up as, you know, it
- 7:53could be chance or just in the nick of time, but you get the
- 7:58sense that God the you know, the Tolkien here, the author is in
- 8:02control of the whole story the whole time.
- 8:05And each character thinks that that, you know, it's going to be
- 8:09their last moment. And sometimes it is.
- 8:11But you know, the main characters throughout, they're
- 8:14being guided by Providence. And this process is meant to
- 8:19create them, create in them, make them certain type of men.
- 8:24And so I'm going to commend this book to you.
- 8:27If you haven't read it and the first time through, it'll
- 8:30probably be OK. You'll probably, I think you'll
- 8:33enjoy it. It's it's I think it's one of
- 8:34the best stories ever written. But the gold is found in
- 8:40rereading it and rereading it. And I think there's something
- 8:43about its virtue, like the virtue of this book that seeps
- 8:48into the reader who keeps reading and keeps reading.
- 8:50Now let me give a quick kind of overview that I think most
- 8:56people miss. I missed it now.
- 9:00I was late to the game and reading the book.
- 9:02I was late to the game and reading period.
- 9:04I don't think I read a book until I graduated high school
- 9:09when I became a Christian. You know, I don't think I ever
- 9:14read a book before that. So I watched at least the first
- 9:18movie. I watched at least the first
- 9:20movie before I read the book. I might have waited.
- 9:23I might have watched all three movies before I read the book.
- 9:28I can't really remember off the top of my head, but I think I
- 9:33might have watched all three movies because I remember the
- 9:35first time I read through it, I got really confused by the
- 9:39ending because the ending in the book is a lot different than the
- 9:42ending in the movie. So let me lay this out for you
- 9:46really quickly. The whole story begins in this
- 9:50place called the Shire, and it's begins with these creatures
- 9:56called Hobbits. Small, pretty insignificant
- 10:02characters, but they're happy. They're kind of, most of them
- 10:07are pretty joyful. They're simple.
- 10:09They love good food, they love good drink, they love their
- 10:12family. They're kind of protected in
- 10:15this Garden of Eden type of space and they don't really know
- 10:19any battles. They don't really know any
- 10:21enemies. They don't fight.
- 10:23They don't do any. They don't go on any, you know,
- 10:25extraordinary journeys. They just kind of exist in this
- 10:28little garden. What what they don't know is the
- 10:32reason that they can enjoy that peace and quiet of the Shire is
- 10:36that they're hard men out in the surrounding areas protecting
- 10:40them. There's people watching over
- 10:42them and keeping kind of evil things and darkness and evil men
- 10:48at Bay. And so they're enjoying this
- 10:50kind of protected state in the Shire.
- 10:54And because they're so protected, they actually lack
- 11:00many virtues. You know, they lack fortitude
- 11:05for one, right? They lacked fortitude for one.
- 11:09And they don't have to really do much with justice either because
- 11:12there's not much wickedness going on around them.
- 11:14And, you know, they're pretty much happy and they get along
- 11:19relatively well. And so they're, they're actually
- 11:23lacking virtue. And there's this growing
- 11:29darkness coming out of Mordor and coming out of other places.
- 11:36There's this growing darkness around them.
- 11:38And this ring of power, right? This ring of power that is
- 11:45controlled by the Dark Lord comes to Frodo, The Hobbit.
- 11:52And to make a Long story short, he's got to take this ring of
- 11:55power and he's got to do this long, arduous, difficult journey
- 12:04all the way back to Mordor to destroy it.
- 12:08And hobbits don't do this kind of thing.
- 12:11And yet Providence has brought in this ring, and he's got to do
- 12:14it. And, and of course he's got this
- 12:16wise counselor, Gandalf the Grey, who's going to try to help
- 12:21him on his way. But of course he, Gandalf is
- 12:25busy with wizard things and, you know, trying to figure out this
- 12:29everything that's going on behind the scenes.
- 12:31And he's got all of these different pieces that he's got
- 12:33to put together. So Gandalf leaves him alone for
- 12:36a while and he's got to make his way back.
- 12:39And then eventually he gets this fellowship around him.
- 12:43There's a couple men, there's a dwarf, there's an elf, of
- 12:46course, Gandalf. And he's got a few of his
- 12:47buddies, three other hobbits with him.
- 12:50And it's the Fellowship, I call themselves the Fellowship of the
- 12:53Ring. And this is this idea that if
- 12:57you're going to be a virtuous man, and if you're going to do
- 12:59an impossible task, you can't do it alone.
- 13:02You're going to need help from other brothers, even people that
- 13:07you know, elves and dwarves don't get along.
- 13:09And so you've got this kind of unity in diversity going along
- 13:14with that. This is this task is so big.
- 13:17It's going to take kind of all the tribes of men in one sense,
- 13:21all the all the parties on Middle Earth to unite to defeat
- 13:24this great evil. And you know, the, the, the
- 13:31journey to mount Doom is so long and it's so slow that it tests
- 13:38your patience. You get, I mean, there's plenty
- 13:41of action in there, but it's this The Lord of the Rings is
- 13:44not like this action-packed adventure story.
- 13:48There's great battles and, and all kind of stuff, but there's
- 13:50long pieces of dialogue. There's, you know, it, it really
- 13:55kind of drags out this journey. And the whole point is, you
- 14:00know, we're called to, to something like this that's going
- 14:04to take our life. It's going to take everything
- 14:06we've got to accomplish and it's not always done in a week or in
- 14:12a few days. It's not just something you can
- 14:16sit down and watch in 2 1/2 hours and boom, you're there.
- 14:22But Frodo and, and I'm going to, I'm going to just track the
- 14:27hobbits here. There's so many things I can
- 14:29talk about, but I'm going to track the hobbits.
- 14:30These hobbits go from kind of clueless, jovial.
- 14:34They don't, they kind of lack wisdom.
- 14:36They definitely don't have fortitude and not really dealers
- 14:41injustice, OK. And then they have to go through
- 14:44this long, arduous journey that radically changes them.
- 14:51All four of them that go on this journey are radically changed.
- 14:54They're changed through their friendship with one another.
- 14:58This book is a phenomenal book about friendship, about loyalty
- 15:02to one another. You read it and you want to be a
- 15:04better friend. You want to be like Sam Wise and
- 15:06Pippen and Mary. It's about, like I said,
- 15:11loyalty. It's about virtue.
- 15:14It's about facing impossible tasks but doing the right thing
- 15:18anyway. And so they have to face demonic
- 15:23creatures, the Nazgul. And Frodo right away gets
- 15:26stabbed with a Nazgul blade, and it's such a poignant picture.
- 15:32He gets wounded by this invisible blade that damages his
- 15:39body. And yet through kind of Elvin
- 15:42magic, they they heal him, but they can't heal his soul.
- 15:48There's this mark. He's a changed man after that.
- 15:51He's a changed Hobbit after that.
- 15:53He's got an ache that is never going to leave him.
- 15:57And this is what's interesting about The Lord of the Rings
- 16:00compared to The Hobbit. The Hobbit Bilbo goes on this
- 16:03great adventure, all kinds of, you know, Dragons and all kind
- 16:06of cool stuff. And then he comes back and he's
- 16:08pretty much the same man. And not only is the same man,
- 16:11but he's got this ring and basically it just brings
- 16:13blessing into his life. For the most part.
- 16:15He gets a longer life. And so it's like a there and
- 16:18back again story. But Bilbo isn't like radically
- 16:22changed in who he is, but in Lord of the Rings, it's
- 16:27completely different. All the people that go on this
- 16:29quest come back radically changed, but Frodo most of all.
- 16:34And so he's you've got these and then they leave, they leave from
- 16:39there and the Fellowship ends up kind of starting to fall apart.
- 16:43Gandalf, they lose Gandalf and his fight with the Balrog and,
- 16:48and of course Frodo and Sam from that moment on.
- 16:51So in the first book that happens and Frodo and Sam think
- 16:54that Gandalf's dead. And then there's this other
- 16:57thing going on that eventually some of you know, they get
- 16:59reunite. He gets reunited with Mary and
- 17:04Pippin and Gimli and Aragorn and Legolas, and they realize he's
- 17:09back alive and they're fighting all these battles.
- 17:12But if you track Frodo and Sam, they're pretty much alone.
- 17:18They've got, they get some help from Fermere and stuff, but
- 17:21they've got this just impossible journey, step after step after
- 17:26step, encountering darkness the whole way, Incarnate hunger,
- 17:33thirst. Frodo's still dealing with his
- 17:36womb. The weight of the Ring is
- 17:38getting heavier and heavier and heavier.
- 17:40It's taken all of his strength. He'd almost dies several times.
- 17:45Sam has to learn how to fight. Frodo has to learn how to fight
- 17:49a little bit. Sam has to carry the ring for a
- 17:52little while, and then Sam eventually has to carry Frodo.
- 17:55Frodo can't even make it up to Mount Doom.
- 17:58I'm fast forwarding a long ways and they get to the the end of
- 18:04the goal and and Frodo is overcome by the ring and he
- 18:08can't destroy it. And then the mercy that they
- 18:12showed to Gollum, that mercy that they showed by not
- 18:20destroying Gollum, Gollum comes back and bites Frodo's finger
- 18:22off and takes the ring and then dances around and falls into the
- 18:27mountain Doom. And the ring is destroyed.
- 18:30Now, this is where most movies would end.
- 18:32And The Lord of the Rings kind of did end there in the movie.
- 18:36But when you're reading the book, there's still 130 pages or
- 18:39so left. And I remember the first time I
- 18:43read the book, being so struck by this, I was like, whoa, they
- 18:45just destroyed the ring. You know, this should be
- 18:47happily, happily ever after. But this was more, it's more
- 18:53than just, you know, we have to do this thing novel, we have to
- 19:01destroy the ring. That is what the book's about.
- 19:04But again, the book is actually more about these characters
- 19:10going from characters that lack certain virtues to virtuous,
- 19:15strong and virtuous characters. And So what happens there when
- 19:21they destroy the ring, of course, it's reveal, you know,
- 19:26Gandalf flies in on the eagles, rescues them.
- 19:30They find out Gandalf's alive. This is amazing reunion.
- 19:33And then you begin this kind of this trek back to the Shire and
- 19:40Aragorn is crowned king. And it's a glorious ceremony.
- 19:44And you know, you like, this is one of the reasons why he
- 19:47destroyed the ring. Like the rule of men has come.
- 19:51Gandalf realizes that his time, his age is up.
- 19:54The age of Wizards is over. Now it's the time of the Age of
- 19:58Kings. So they kind of leave the king
- 20:00where he's at and the Fellowship kind of begins to to break
- 20:05apart. Legolas and Gimli go do their
- 20:07thing and you get them and they go back.
- 20:12They find Solomon in his tower and he runs off and, and, and
- 20:18there's this sense that we've won.
- 20:22We've won the battle. The king is enthroned and yet
- 20:30there's there's still work to do.
- 20:32There's still something that has to be done.
- 20:35And what that something is, you don't find out until like the
- 20:39second to last chapter. And it's called the scourging of
- 20:42the Shire. And it's become one of my
- 20:45favorite chapters in the whole book.
- 20:48And what it is, is these happy go lucky hobbits have come back.
- 20:54The king is on his throne, Gandalf has left them, Legolas,
- 21:00Gimli has left them. Basically all the tough guys,
- 21:03all the hard men have left them. All the battle tested men have
- 21:09left them. And now it's just 4 hobbits that
- 21:13have to go back to the Shire. And what happened?
- 21:16They didn't know this happened, but what happened is Solomon and
- 21:21Worm Tongue fled the tower and they went back to the Shire.
- 21:26And Solomon's power has been taken from him by Gandalf and
- 21:33because the Ring is destroyed. And so now all he has is the
- 21:38power of his tongue, right? He's got the power of a normal
- 21:41man, the power of his tongue. And what he does is he goes back
- 21:45and through fear and manipulation and, you know,
- 21:49threats, he takes over the Shire.
- 21:52Again, the Shire weren't fight. They weren't fighting folks.
- 21:55They didn't have weapons. They weren't strong.
- 21:56They didn't, they weren't just men.
- 21:58They weren't, they didn't have fortitude.
- 22:00So he conquers the Shire pretty easily.
- 22:03And this is what it looks like. The Shire is what it looks like
- 22:06when you have a culture full of soft men.
- 22:09You have a culture full of men who lack the hard virtues of
- 22:14justice and fortitude. And so he basically takes over,
- 22:21he takes over all the means of production.
- 22:22He basically turns it into a socialistic kind of communistic
- 22:25or place where he's in control of all the harvests, he's in
- 22:31control of all the wine, he's in control of all the the pipe
- 22:34weed. And he gives out a little here
- 22:36and there, but he's basically using it for his own use and,
- 22:38and doing what he wants with it. And the, the hobbits get back to
- 22:46their hometown. The hobbits get back to the
- 22:48Shire and there's gates set up where there was never gates
- 22:50before. But this was what's so beautiful
- 22:54about this chapter. The hobbits are not the same as
- 22:59when they left the battle. They've been through things,
- 23:03right? They've been through loss,
- 23:05they've been through pain. They've had wins, they've had
- 23:09losses. And it's made them into hard men
- 23:15now, right? Or hard hobbits.
- 23:17And so these guys start talking smack over the fence and they're
- 23:20just like, they're different men.
- 23:22They're, they're hollering over there.
- 23:23You better open that gate before I come over there and smack you
- 23:26and, you know, knock you out or whatever.
- 23:28And they're carrying swords now. They know how to use these
- 23:31swords now. They're in armor now.
- 23:33And that's what they do. They hop over the gate and they,
- 23:36they take over and they're like, oh, the big man's going to find
- 23:39out Sharky. And they're like, good, take me
- 23:43to him. And then they, they go back and,
- 23:46and the Shire has been, it's not totally destroyed, but it has
- 23:52fallen from its former glory. You know, vegetation has been
- 23:57cut down, trees have been cut down, different style of
- 24:00architecture has been built up. It's an uglier place than when
- 24:04they left it. And, you know, it's kind of a
- 24:07sad story. It's kind of like going to your
- 24:09hometown and seeing it run over with low income housing and
- 24:14crime in the streets and graffiti and all this kind of
- 24:16stuff. It's that kind of feeling.
- 24:20And the, the best part about this chapter is that these men
- 24:26now, these hobbits, they know what to do.
- 24:29Right before they would have went along with all the other
- 24:32hobbits. They wouldn't have resisted.
- 24:34They wouldn't have spoken up. They wouldn't have, you know,
- 24:37took up weapons and fought. They would have just gone along
- 24:40with it and fear just like everybody else.
- 24:42But now they've seen things. Now they've pushed back the
- 24:45darkness. They fought demons and they've
- 24:47won. They've seen how the light can
- 24:50penetrate the darkness and the light cannot be overcome.
- 24:53And so now they've got experience, right?
- 24:55They've got real virtue. And they, they go back in and
- 24:58they cleanse the Shire. They, you know, take out the bad
- 25:04guys, they, you know, a bunch of guys.
- 25:06They, they rally the troops, they say we're fighting.
- 25:08And you see these hobbits who, like I said, they were, you
- 25:12know, happy go lucky type of people.
- 25:14Finally they have a leader. Finally they have 4 hobbits who
- 25:17come in and say, we're not taking this crap anymore.
- 25:19We're standing up to this injustice.
- 25:21We're standing up to this wickedness.
- 25:22We're standing up to this evil. And we're standing up to this
- 25:25guy that's got no power, but he acts like he does because he's
- 25:27good at talking. And, and ultimately what they do
- 25:31is they, they kick all their butts, but they do it because
- 25:34they have virtue, because they have fortitude down.
- 25:36They've been changed through this great battle and this great
- 25:41quest that they've been through. And then you see evil basically
- 25:49commits suicide. So you've got Solomon and Worm
- 25:53Tongue, and Solomon's always kind of treated Worm Tongue like
- 25:58crap when he starts blaming Worm Tongue for all kind of stuff
- 26:01that Sarman told him to do. And Worm Thumb freaks out, cuts
- 26:06his throat, cuts Sarman's throat, takes off running, and
- 26:10then they shoot. They shoot him with arrows and
- 26:12kill him. And the whole point from my
- 26:18perspective, is that the virtues aren't soft, right?
- 26:27The virtues aren't all empathetic and kindness, that
- 26:32there are virtues that are hard, like fortitude and justice.
- 26:36And if, if, like Edmund Burke said, all it takes for evil to
- 26:43win is for good men to do nothing.
- 26:46And these were good men now and they had to come back and they
- 26:49had to do something. And what?
- 26:51What did they have to do? They had to drive out the
- 26:52darkness. They had to drive out the evil
- 26:55amongst them. They had to regain control of
- 26:59the production, put it back into the hands of the people.
- 27:02They had to beautify the the Shire again.
- 27:06They had to drive the wickedness from it.
- 27:08And in order to do that, they needed to fight, right?
- 27:10They needed to fight. They like if everybody's Mr.
- 27:15Nice Guy, well, the one mean strongman is going to come in
- 27:19there and take over, right? And so they had to become
- 27:23virtuous men that could drive out these people and give them a
- 27:27home again. And that's basically what they
- 27:29do. And then we see with Frodo,
- 27:32Frodo is so changed from his battle, and you could even say
- 27:38his battle with sin, right, If you could, if you see the Ring
- 27:41of Power as kind of a analogy to sin.
- 27:44He's so changed by it. He's so wounded by it.
- 27:46He doesn't even get to enjoy the Shire.
- 27:48Sam and Mary and Pip and do, but he's got to go off.
- 27:54He's got to stay at West with Gandalf because he he basically
- 27:59can't live in that place anymore.
- 28:00He's been so changed by it. So it's a beautiful picture,
- 28:03man. It's a beautiful book.
- 28:05You read it. I just I want to be more like
- 28:07Aragorn. I want to be more like Fermere.
- 28:09I want to be more like, you know, almost all of the virtuous
- 28:13people in the book. I want to be a better friend.
- 28:15I want to be. But honestly, if you're reading
- 28:19it and you're, you're more of a soft man, right?
- 28:23You have the soft virtues when you read it, when you read and
- 28:28you're looking at the hobbits and you're kind of laughing at
- 28:30them and they just want a good, you know, cup of ale and they
- 28:32just want to eat. They just want to have fun.
- 28:34And you see their their arc, their character development,
- 28:37right? That should be our character
- 28:40development as well. We should be men like that.
- 28:44It's good. I mean, the, The thing is when
- 28:46they get back and they're, they're hard men, right?
- 28:48And they're tough and they're strong and they've got fortitude
- 28:51and they, they know how to execute justice.
- 28:53They still know how to have a good time.
- 28:55They're still jovial. They still laugh.
- 28:57They still love a good meal and a good drink and some good pipe
- 29:00wheat. And that's the kind of men that
- 29:02we want to be, right? We want to get, we don't want to
- 29:04get hard and cold and kind of burned out and despondent and
- 29:11bitter. We don't want to be like that.
- 29:13We want to be tough and tender. We want to be strong and joyful.
- 29:18And we want to fight the battles that we have to fight so that
- 29:21our children don't have to fight them right.
- 29:23And so we want to the battles that the Lord's bringing us to
- 29:26right now, we want to face those head on.
- 29:29We want to speak the truth in love.
- 29:31We want to be virtuous men. And we're never going to be
- 29:34virtuous if we keep putting off those battles, if we keep making
- 29:38excuses why, you know, we can't do the hard thing today.
- 29:43We can't put our sin to death today.
- 29:45We can't support our brothers. We can't be a good friend.
- 29:47We can't be a good husband. We can't be a good father.
- 29:49We can't be a good Workman. We keep putting off these
- 29:53battles, these quests that the Lord puts in front of us.
- 29:56We're never going to change. We're never going to grow into
- 29:59virtuous men. And So what I would commend to
- 30:03you is start reading Lord of the Rings.
- 30:09Start reading it. I pray that you would get hooked
- 30:13by it. I pray that it would cast a
- 30:16spell on you and you would want to protect the Shire.
- 30:24That's where I'm at. I want to build the Shire here
- 30:27in the Quad Cities. I want to protect the Shire.
- 30:29I want to make our city a more beautiful, a more truthful and
- 30:39graceful place to live, right? I, I wanted to, you know,
- 30:41beauty, goodness, truth and beauty, right?
- 30:43That's what we want in our city. We want to build the Shire,
- 30:46right? And in order to build a Shire,
- 30:48we're going to have to drive out some wickedness.
- 30:49We're going to drive out some evil, even the evil within us.
- 30:52We're going to have to drive out the weakness, the softness in
- 30:55US. And we're going to have to
- 30:57become a hard man that can do hard things for the glory of God
- 31:00and for the good of the Shire. That's what we want to do.
- 31:03So whether it's just speaking the truth to liberal crazies in
- 31:09our city, whether it's supporting justice in our
- 31:12streets, whether it's teaching our kids the Bible, whatever it
- 31:16is, we want to be virtuous men that can do that.
- 31:19And I think reading Lord of the Rings is a great step in that
- 31:23direction. And the more you read it and the
- 31:25longer you read it, I'm telling you, man, the more you'll be
- 31:29changed by it and the more you'll, you'll be able to see
- 31:31the world through virtue and vice, right?
- 31:35You'll be able to see the world that way and be shaped by it.
- 31:38And you'll be able to, you'll have the discernment to see the
- 31:41difference between virtue and vice, and you'll be able to
- 31:44pursue virtue with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength.
- 31:47And so that's what I'm hoping for you.
- 31:49So guys, that's what I got for you today.
- 31:52If you've got any questions or comments, or if you just want to
- 31:55put down below your favorite part of the Lord of the Rings
- 31:58man, or you got questions on the Lord of the Rings, put them
- 32:00down. I'm not a Lord of the Rings
- 32:01scholar. I've just read it several times
- 32:04and love it. I'm always learning more about
- 32:06it, but again, appreciate it if you liked, if you subscribed and
- 32:11if you shared this podcast with a friend and guys.
- 32:15Next week I, my plan is to talk about discernment.
- 32:19So I've been thinking about this, written some stuff on it,
- 32:22and I want to talk about the, the, the necessity of
- 32:28discernment and the life of a virtuous man.
- 32:31So that's coming next week guys. I hope you enjoyed this.
- 32:34God bless and I'll talk to you soon.
