- 2:28out in my book.
- 2:29You can get it on Amazon as well.
- 2:32Our master weekly topic for the season five
- 2:35is of show 36 is Stop Living a
- 2:38Life You Never Chose.
- 2:41I think that's an important piece that a
- 2:43lot of people like, they just don't realize
- 2:46it.
- 2:46They think the life they're in is the
- 2:48one they want, but somehow they got dished
- 2:50that.
- 2:51Today, I'm going directly to something that influences
- 2:55nearly every choice you make.
- 2:58What is that?
- 2:59Your thinking.
- 3:00You can say you want change.
- 3:03All you want.
- 3:04You can set goals.
- 3:06You can change your environment.
- 3:08You can work with vision boards, but if
- 3:13you keep interpreting everything through the same belief
- 3:15and assumptions, you may keep rebuilding versions of
- 3:19the same life.
- 3:21Let's unpack this together.
- 3:23I have 30 ways to change the thinking
- 3:25behind the life you're currently creating.
- 3:29Number one, your patterns begin with your thinking.
- 3:33I've said this before.
- 3:34Everything starts in the mind.
- 3:36All thoughts and things come to fruition from
- 3:39the mind.
- 3:41Our behavior rarely appears from nowhere.
- 3:43It comes from something.
- 3:44Thoughts influence choices.
- 3:48Choices become actions and repeated actions become patterns.
- 3:52If you want to understand a pattern, examine
- 3:55the thinking feeding it.
- 3:57Number two, stop rehearsing reasons you can't change.
- 4:03Every time you repeat why something won't work,
- 4:09you strengthen that explanation.
- 4:11Understand real limitations, but don't spend your mental
- 4:14energy constantly building arguments against your own growth.
- 4:18I think that's something a lot of people,
- 4:20they wrestle with.
- 4:21They don't realize they're wrestling with it, but
- 4:25it's something very important that I think we
- 4:26need to be aware of.
- 4:29We need to be aware of.
- 4:31That's something I want to share with you.
- 4:33Number three, question thoughts you treat as facts.
- 4:40This seems hard because when you accept something
- 4:43as a fact, it's like, well, maybe that's
- 4:45not true.
- 4:47A thought can feel completely true and still
- 4:51be an interpretation.
- 4:55Interesting.
- 4:57Ask yourself what evidence supports it and what
- 5:01evidence might challenge it right now.
- 5:03You got to be willing and open to
- 5:06ask yourself these questions, not the fact that,
- 5:10well, you know, I can't because the way
- 5:14I'm living is perfect.
- 5:15Well, it may not be.
- 5:18Number four, notice the stories you repeatedly tell
- 5:22yourself.
- 5:23Maybe your story is that you're unlucky, too
- 5:27late, not talented enough, or someone who always
- 5:31fails.
- 5:32Repeated stories can become identities if you never
- 5:35question them.
- 5:37We want to question things, not to give
- 5:40ourselves a hard time, but to ask why
- 5:43am I doing something?
- 5:45Why am I going after that goal?
- 5:47I think that's an important one.
- 5:48Number five, stop letting yesterday predict tomorrow.
- 5:54No reason for that.
- 5:56The past contains information, not a guaranteed forecast.
- 5:59Learn from previous experiences without assuming they automatically
- 6:03determine what happens next.
- 6:06All right.
- 6:07A lot of people fall in that trap
- 6:09because someone else says, well, you know, you
- 6:11can't do it that way.
- 6:12The only way through it is this way.
- 6:14And they may be wrong.
- 6:17All right.
- 6:17They may actually be wrong.
- 6:21Okay.
- 6:22That's an important piece, I think, that a
- 6:24lot of people don't realize.
- 6:26Number six, replace automatic reactions with deliberate responses.
- 6:31So, create a small space between what happens
- 6:34and what you do next.
- 6:36That pause gives you an opportunity to choose
- 6:39instead of simply repeating an old reaction.
- 6:42Number seven, challenge beliefs that keep you small.
- 6:47Ask where those beliefs originated from.
- 6:52Were they built from evidence?
- 6:54One painful experience?
- 6:56Somebody else's opinion?
- 6:57Or an assumption that you've never really tested,
- 7:01but you thought was true, right?
- 7:04You thought it was true, but it may
- 7:06not be true.
- 7:07Number eight, please, ladies and gentlemen, think beyond
- 7:09your current circumstances.
- 7:11Your current situation matters, but it isn't necessarily
- 7:14permanent.
- 7:15Think about what could become possible through learning,
- 7:19planning, patience, and consistent action.
- 7:23Number nine, stop feeding problems with repetitive thinking.
- 7:27Thinking about a problem can help you solve
- 7:29it.
- 7:30Replaying it endlessly without producing a decision can
- 7:33simply make it larger in your own mind.
- 7:37Just shift or pivot from repetition toward a
- 7:40resolution.
- 7:42See, when we put ourselves on repeat, we
- 7:47just do, but we don't ask a question
- 7:49how we might be doing the job wrong,
- 7:53right?
- 7:54Number 10, change the question and change the
- 7:58possibilities.
- 8:01Hmm.
- 8:02We change the question, things in our life
- 8:04change, guys.
- 8:05Things in our life change.
- 8:08They change quite a bit, all right?
- 8:11So, this is very, very important to understand.
- 8:14Instead of asking, why does this always happen
- 8:17to me?
- 8:18Ask, what can I learn from this?
- 8:22Better questions direct your mind toward more useful
- 8:25answers.
- 8:28Number 11, notice where fear distorts reality.
- 8:32Fear can make one possibility feel like a
- 8:35certainty.
- 8:37Separate what could happen from what is actually
- 8:40happening right now.
- 8:42So, to do this, you have to evaluate
- 8:44risk without allowing fear to write the entire
- 8:48story.
- 8:48I mean, I know that's what a lot
- 8:50of people do, like, oh my gosh, this
- 8:52is happening.
- 8:52So, I'm probably going down this path, and
- 8:55you may not be going down the pathway,
- 8:57but if you allow your brain to rewrite
- 8:59it, that could be wrong, right?
- 9:05That's important.
- 9:10That's an important piece, guys.
- 9:12A very, very important piece to understand and
- 9:16to be, I'm going to say, aware of.
- 9:20Okay, that's important.
- 9:21Number 12, please stop expecting different results from
- 9:25identical thinking.
- 9:26This gets me back to Einstein's great discovery,
- 9:32and that is insanity.
- 9:35Doing the same thing over and over again,
- 9:36expecting different results, that's insanity.
- 9:39So, we need to change what we're doing
- 9:41if we want to see different results.
- 9:43I mean, that's the kicker here, guys.
- 9:47That's how that works, okay?
- 9:49So, if the same assumptions keep producing the
- 9:52same decisions, something needs to change upstream.
- 9:57New outcomes often require looking at the situation
- 10:00differently, a different perspective, you know, will give
- 10:07you different thoughts, will get you to come
- 10:09to different conclusions, conclusions that you may have
- 10:13never realized before, but they're actually right in
- 10:16front of you.
- 10:18They're right in front of you, guys, right
- 10:20in front of you.
- 10:21Number 13, give new ideas enough time to
- 10:25develop.
- 10:26Don't destroy every unfamiliar idea during its first
- 10:2930 seconds.
- 10:30Explore it, ask questions.
- 10:33Some possibilities need time before their value becomes
- 10:36visible.
- 10:37Number 14, let evidence challenge old beliefs.
- 10:42You know, let the evidence speak for itself,
- 10:44right?
- 10:47And if you could do that, you could
- 10:49change your life, right?
- 10:51You could change your life.
- 10:53I think that's a real important thing to
- 10:56think about, okay?
- 11:01And you could change, okay?
- 11:11That's the key, guys.
- 11:13It's asking these questions and getting answers that
- 11:17could help us change who and what we're
- 11:22going after.
- 11:23What goals do we want in our life?
- 11:26Do we just accept something because somebody else
- 11:28says, oh, you know, that's the goal you
- 11:30need?
- 11:31Maybe we have no interest in that.
- 11:35For example, many parents want their kids to
- 11:39play baseball or football, but they may have
- 11:42no interest in baseball or football, but that's
- 11:44okay, you'll like it later.
- 11:46That's not really the way to go.
- 11:49When reality contradicts something you believe, wake up,
- 11:53pay attention to it.
- 11:55Growth requires being willing to update your thinking
- 11:58when better information becomes available.
- 12:01You know, it's like an update.
- 12:03Are you ready for that?
- 12:04And if you're not, then how do you
- 12:06move forward?
- 12:08I think it becomes a big problem.
- 12:12And people give up because things aren't going
- 12:18the way they want them to go, all
- 12:22right?
- 12:23And that's a big problem, guys, okay?
- 12:30But if you ask yourself these questions, you'll
- 12:33at least be able to make changes.
- 12:38You'll be able to make changes.
- 12:48That's a very important thing, guys.
- 12:56Can you ask yourself enough questions that you
- 13:00can actually get what you want?
- 13:03Can you?
- 13:04Or are you just going to be like,
- 13:06well, I'm just going to accept whatever comes
- 13:08and whatever it is, I'm just going to
- 13:09accept it.
- 13:11That's not a way to do anything, guys.
- 13:14Right?
- 13:16Definitely not a way to do anything.
- 13:20So I think that's an important piece that
- 13:22many people, they forget, all right?
- 13:27They forget.
- 13:28And the reason they forget is because they're
- 13:31told by somebody else that this is the
- 13:33way, but the way may not even be
- 13:35close to what's right for them.
- 13:37Number 15, stop defending limitations.
- 13:41Sometimes we become strangely protective of the reasons
- 13:45we can't do something.
- 13:47Be careful not to turn limitations into identities
- 13:50simply because they feel or sound familiar, right?
- 13:55We fall into the trap called familiarity.
- 13:58And then we're like, oh my gosh, how
- 14:00did I get down this road?
- 14:03You got comfortable and you fell into a
- 14:05pattern and you kept repeating things and then
- 14:07you got stuck into a life that you
- 14:09didn't want.
- 14:11Number 16, train yourself to look for options.
- 14:14When something goes wrong, ask what remains possible.
- 14:18You may not have the option you originally
- 14:21wanted, but that doesn't mean you have no
- 14:23options at all.
- 14:25It's time to ask questions, intelligent questions.
- 14:30A wise person once said to me, John,
- 14:32you know, ask good questions or intelligent questions,
- 14:35you'll get intelligent answers.
- 14:38Garbage in, garbage out.
- 14:40Quality in, quality out.
- 14:43Number 17, build a curious mindset.
- 14:49Instead of immediately being negative, be curious about
- 14:52how things are unfolding in your life and
- 14:54other people's lives, okay?
- 14:56Curiosity creates room for learning.
- 14:58Before deciding an idea is terrible, ask, how
- 15:02does it work?
- 15:03Why does somebody believe in it or you?
- 15:07And what you might be missing to this
- 15:10could be the whole key that changes the
- 15:12trajectory and says, you know what?
- 15:14I'm on the right pathway now.
- 15:18You're on the right pathway.
- 15:19You might've always been on the right pathway,
- 15:21but you might've just been, let's say slightly
- 15:25off.
- 15:27You were in the right stadium, but let's
- 15:29just say you were in the wrong section.
- 15:34I think that happens a lot to us
- 15:36in life.
- 15:36You know, we're in the right arena.
- 15:38A lot of times we're just not in
- 15:41the right section.
- 15:42We're in the right row.
- 15:44Sometimes people are not even in the right
- 15:45building or the right stadium, but a lot
- 15:47of times they are in the right stadium.
- 15:50They are in the right field, but they
- 15:53may not be in the right discipline of
- 15:55the field.
- 15:56Number 18, question your first interpretation.
- 16:01Your first explanation isn't always the most accurate
- 16:04one, guys.
- 16:05Before reacting, consider whether there could be another
- 16:08reasonable explanation for what happened and approach that
- 16:14in a manner that is going to make
- 16:15sense to you, okay?
- 16:21Approach that in a manner that's going to
- 16:22make sense to you.
- 16:24I think that's a real big thing, okay,
- 16:28that a lot of people unfortunately miss.
- 16:32They miss it because their eyes are peeled,
- 16:37unfortunately, and tuned into negativity.
- 16:39A lot of people do this, right?
- 16:42I had somebody a few weeks ago say,
- 16:44oh, John, it's just never going to work
- 16:45out.
- 16:46I'm like, well, with that attitude, of course,
- 16:47nothing's going to ever work out.
- 16:48You're never going to be able to go
- 16:51anywhere because you're always knocking yourself.
- 16:53You're always knocking the possibility.
- 16:55Any opportunity that comes and knocks on your
- 16:56door, you don't even get a chance.
- 16:58You don't even answer the door to see
- 16:59what it is.
- 17:00Number 19, stop assuming difficulty means impossibility.
- 17:04It doesn't.
- 17:05It means different.
- 17:06Hard and impossible are not synonyms.
- 17:10Sometimes we have to understand that something requiring
- 17:13more time and effort, learning, or persistence doesn't
- 17:16automatically mean it cannot be done.
- 17:19It might take some persistence.
- 17:22Number 20, think about who you could become.
- 17:25Don't evaluate your entire future using only your
- 17:27current capabilities.
- 17:29You can learn skills, develop discipline, gain experience,
- 17:33and become capable of things you aren't ready
- 17:35for today, and that's okay because each day
- 17:39you build a new concept, okay?
- 17:43I think a lot of people will get
- 17:52confused because they're not happy with where they
- 17:55want to go, right?
- 18:02That's important, right?
- 18:06Definitely important.
- 18:09Number 21, let experience update your beliefs, right?
- 18:15When you do this, your life can change.
- 18:17Experience should change us.
- 18:19When you've learned something new, allow yourself to
- 18:23think differently.
- 18:24You don't owe permanent loyalty to an outdated
- 18:26conclusion, so don't act like you do.
- 18:30Number 22, stop mentally living in previous failures.
- 18:33So many people do this.
- 18:34Oh my gosh, I guess I have to
- 18:36live like that.
- 18:37No, you learn from it and you move
- 18:38on.
- 18:39Study failure long enough to learn from it,
- 18:42then bring your attention back to what you're
- 18:45doing now, not what you did before.
- 18:49Yesterday shouldn't receive unlimited control over today.
- 18:52I think a lot of people feel, well,
- 18:54it didn't work last week, didn't work last
- 18:56month, so it's never going to work.
- 18:58That's a terrible attitude.
- 19:00Number 23, build thoughts that support action.
- 19:05Useful thinking should eventually help you move forward.
- 19:09Ask what you can do next, what you
- 19:12need to learn, who might be able to
- 19:14help you, and what first step is available
- 19:18to you right now, not tomorrow, not next
- 19:22week.
- 19:23What step is available to you right now?
- 19:31And hopefully that's going to make you think,
- 19:34make you think in a manner that I
- 19:36think will change who you really are in
- 19:39life.
- 19:39But it's got to start with you asking
- 19:42these kinds of questions.
- 19:44If you don't ask these kinds of questions,
- 19:47then guess what?
- 19:48You're just going to become more frustrated.
- 19:52And when your wheels keep spinning and they're
- 19:55not going anywhere, people eventually go through what
- 20:01my book is about, burnout.
- 20:04They don't fall on the ground, but they
- 20:06lose the desire to want to pursue something,
- 20:10something they enjoyed for a while.
- 20:12Now they lose the joys of life.
- 20:15That's not fair.
- 20:17Number 24, catch yourself spiraling.
- 20:20One problem doesn't automatically mean everything is falling
- 20:23apart.
- 20:23Notice when your mind starts turning one setback
- 20:27into prediction about your entire future.
- 20:30Well, I dropped that.
- 20:31The best one is somebody stubs their toe
- 20:33or they break a glass.
- 20:35Oh, the rest of my day is going
- 20:36to be horrible.
- 20:36And the rest of the day does go
- 20:37horribly because they get their mindset that everything's
- 20:40going to be bad.
- 20:41And they just keep looking for things to
- 20:42be bad.
- 20:42And the universe is, okay, I'll show you
- 20:44things are going to be bad.
- 20:45You asked for it.
- 20:46Number 25, choose perspective intentionally.
- 20:50Perspective isn't about pretending something difficult is wonderful.
- 20:55It's deciding which part of reality deserves your
- 20:57attention so you can respond effectively now.
- 21:01Number 26, stop strengthening what you want to
- 21:04escape.
- 21:05If you constantly rehearse fear, resentment, helplessness, or
- 21:09reasons, nothing can change.
- 21:12You may strengthen the mental patterns you're trying
- 21:15to leave behind, but that's it.
- 21:18You won't get any further to your success.
- 21:23Number 27, your thoughts influence what you attempt.
- 21:29If you decide something is impossible before trying,
- 21:31your belief has already influenced the outcome.
- 21:34It's going to make your muscles tired.
- 21:36It's going to give you an attitude that
- 21:37you can't go forward.
- 21:39Give yourself enough openness to test what may
- 21:41actually be possible.
- 21:45Just because somebody said it can't be done
- 21:47doesn't mean they're right.
- 21:51Test it.
- 21:53Number 28, better thinking creates better choices.
- 21:59Thoughts alone don't transform a life, but they
- 22:02influence decisions.
- 22:04Better decisions repeated consistently can create very different
- 22:08outcomes over time.
- 22:10So a perspective, a shift, can actually affect
- 22:15where we are and what we're doing and
- 22:17what we're moving toward or going away from.
- 22:21I think these are hard lessons, and when
- 22:25something's hard, people say, you know what, I
- 22:26don't want to deal with that.
- 22:28It's where things get a little bit uncomfortable.
- 22:32Call it hard.
- 22:33Call it confusing.
- 22:35That we learn, and by learning, like, oh
- 22:38my gosh, I did this so great.
- 22:40I want to do it some more.
- 22:41I want to learn more.
- 22:44There's always going to be people out there
- 22:45that say, you know what, I'm done learning.
- 22:47I finished high school.
- 22:48I finished college.
- 22:49That's a mindset, right?
- 22:52We should be living and learning every single
- 22:54day we're alive.
- 22:56Number 29, a changed life often starts invisibly.
- 23:01Before people notice different results, there may be
- 23:04weeks or months or change thinking, better decisions,
- 23:08stronger boundaries, learning, and disciplined action happening privately.
- 23:15I've said this to you guys many times
- 23:16before on shows, that what we do in
- 23:20private eventually shows in public.
- 23:27So be careful on what you practice alone,
- 23:29because that will become the foresight into the
- 23:33main world.
- 23:36And you might be saying to me, John,
- 23:37well, what do you mean by that?
- 23:39It's very simple.
- 23:40I mean that what you're doing in your
- 23:45spare time, how you're doing things when no
- 23:49one's watching, is the way you're going to
- 23:51do them when people are watching.
- 23:53So let's do things in a way that's
- 23:56going to change and shake up the world
- 23:58for the better.
- 23:59Number 30, change your mind before demanding your
- 24:04life changes.
- 24:05Change your mind.
- 24:06That's it.
- 24:07Change your mind.
- 24:10If you want a different future, examine the
- 24:12thinking you're bringing into it right now.
- 24:14You can't expect every circumstance to change while
- 24:17refusing to reconsider anything inside yourself.
- 24:21And that's where today's conversation becomes so vitally
- 24:25important.
- 24:27Changing your thinking isn't about standing in front
- 24:29of a mirror and pretending, well, everything's perfect
- 24:32today.
- 24:33That's not what I mean.
- 24:36Some problems are real.
- 24:37Some circumstances are difficult or hard to swallow.
- 24:41Some limitations exist.
- 24:43Some setbacks hurt.
- 24:45Better thinking doesn't deny reality.
- 24:47It helps you respond to reality more effectively.
- 24:50Instead of automatically saying, I can't, you ask,
- 24:55what would I need to learn to do
- 24:57this?
- 24:58Or how would I need to approach this
- 25:02so I could accomplish the goal?
- 25:04Instead of saying, this always happens to me,
- 25:08you can ask, what pattern am I repeating
- 25:11that I need to change?
- 25:12Instead of assuming failure means you're finished, you
- 25:15ask, what did this teach me?
- 25:17Now I'm ready to start forward.
- 25:20Now I'm ready to go back to the
- 25:21drawing board with all I've learned.
- 25:22Instead of allowing fear to decide, and what's
- 25:25fear or false, evidence appearing real, what's possible
- 25:28for you, gather evidence on what really is
- 25:31possible.
- 25:32Test, be a scientist.
- 25:33And instead of demanding certainty before you move
- 25:37forward, you identify the best next step you
- 25:41can take with what you know today.
- 25:43That's a very different way to live.
- 25:45That's called intentional living, and most people don't
- 25:47do it.
- 25:48Think about one area of your life you've
- 25:50been trying to change.
- 25:51Maybe it's your career, relationships, health, business, confidence,
- 25:55finances, or something deeply personal.
- 25:57Now ask yourself this, what am I repeatedly
- 26:00thinking about this situation now?
- 26:03Are those thoughts helping me take productive action?
- 26:07Or are they reinforcing the exact pattern I
- 26:12want to escape from?
- 26:13Throughout this week, I'm going to explore what
- 26:16it means to stop living a life you
- 26:18never chose.
- 26:19On Saturday, we challenged the rules you may
- 26:21have inherited.
- 26:23On Sunday, we questioned whether the goals you're
- 26:25chasing actually deserve your life and time now.
- 26:29And today, I'm going deeper by examining the
- 26:32thinking that influences those choices.
- 26:34Because you can walk away from somebody else's
- 26:36rules and still carry their assumptions inside your
- 26:39head.
- 26:40Real change requires more than changing direction, guys.
- 26:44Sometimes you need to think and choose the
- 26:48direction.
- 26:49So question what you've treated as fact.
- 26:52Challenge beliefs that no longer match the evidence.
- 26:56Stop rehearsing yesterday's failures.
- 26:58Become curious about possibilities.
- 27:02Look for options.
- 27:04Ask better questions.
- 27:06And then turn the thinking into action.
- 27:09Your thoughts aren't magic.
- 27:11They don't control everything that happens to you.
- 27:15But they have tremendous influence over what you
- 27:17notice, what you attempt, what you avoid, how
- 27:21you interpret setbacks, and what you do next.
- 27:24That matters.
- 27:25I'm John C.

- 27:27And this has been another amazing episode of
- 27:29Inspirations for Your Life.
- 27:30Remember this, ladies and gentlemen, a changed life
- 27:33often begins before anybody else can see it.
- 27:35It begins when you challenge an old assumption
- 27:38and belief set.
- 27:39When you ask a better question.
- 27:41When you see another possibility.
- 27:44When you make a different choice.
- 27:47And when you stop allowing yesterday's thinking to
- 27:51automatically design tomorrow.
- 27:54Your life won't change until you change this.
- 27:57The thinking behind the choices you're making today.
