Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: You just heard the SBA administrator Kelly Leffler say Democrats
- 0:05Speaker 1: hate the Trump agenda and want to punish the American
- 0:08Speaker 1: public with a shutdown as a result.
- 0:10Speaker 2: You react, we want to support the American people. Talk
- 0:13Speaker 2: to people on the ground and communities across the country.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Prices are going up across the country. They're slashing healthcare
- 0:21Speaker 2: for millions of people across the country. People are angry.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Trump promised to lower costs on day one in his administration,
- 0:28Speaker 2: and yet through tariffs, the big ugly bill, costs have
- 0:31Speaker 2: been going up. That's what you hear from people on
- 0:34Speaker 2: the ground. We've got to make sure we're addressing the
- 0:36Speaker 2: needs of our communities. And unfortunately, we've got a bunch
- 0:39Speaker 2: of members of Congress on the Republican side who just
- 0:41Speaker 2: are blindly loyal to Donald Trump.
- 0:43Speaker 1: How does shutting down the federal government solve any of
- 0:47Speaker 1: the things you just described.
- 0:48Speaker 2: What we need to do is make sure that we
- 0:50Speaker 2: are supporting programs that help the American people. We're making
- 0:54Speaker 2: sure that people have affordable, quality healthcare across the country,
- 0:57Speaker 2: and for keeping the government open, something very achievable to do.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Turns out, the fiscal year always starts on October first,
- 1:05Speaker 2: and yet Republicans waited forever to try to work on
- 1:08Speaker 2: funding bills. We shouldn't be doing continuing resolutions. We should
- 1:11Speaker 2: have passed full year funding bills by now. Republicans are
- 1:15Speaker 2: in charge of the House, the Senate, the White House,
- 1:18Speaker 2: didn't come to the table, waited last minute, and now
- 1:21Speaker 2: they're not even in town and we have a shutdown
- 1:24Speaker 2: leaving the House. Republicans aren't even here, and so we
- 1:28Speaker 2: need people who are going to come to the table
- 1:29Speaker 2: and work to make sure we're putting the needs of
- 1:31Speaker 2: the American people first, not folks who are on vacation
- 1:34Speaker 2: and I guess are hoping for a shutdown.
- 1:37Speaker 1: In the last hour or so Senate, my majority leader
- 1:40Speaker 1: John Thune has indicated that if there is a shutdown,
- 1:43Speaker 1: there'll be no negotiations with Democrats.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Does he want to serve the American people? Turns out
- 1:48Speaker 2: that the American people want Congress to work. I think
- 1:51Speaker 2: we've had Republicans in Congresses.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Does that alarm you and fight you about the alarms
- 1:55Speaker 1: me social duration of a shutdown.
- 1:57Speaker 2: It alarms me that Republicans have abdicated their responsibility in Congress,
- 2:02Speaker 2: have just been blindly loyal to Donald Trump, we need
- 2:04Speaker 2: folks who are going to stand up put the voices
- 2:06Speaker 2: of their communities first. Healthcare is critical across the country.
- 2:11Speaker 2: People want to make sure that there's affordable, quality healthcare.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Republicans are ignoring that, and you know, come to the table,
- 2:19Speaker 2: sit down, count the votes. That's what it takes to
- 2:22Speaker 2: pass legislation. That's always been true. They're uninterested in that.
- 2:26Speaker 2: They're just trying to figure out kind of who they're
- 2:29Speaker 2: going to blame and who they're going to hurt. In fact,
- 2:31Speaker 2: if you listen to Russ vot or the President, they've
- 2:36Speaker 2: talked about budget, They've talked about the damage that they
- 2:40Speaker 2: want to do, how they want to hurt the American people.
- 2:43Speaker 2: They haven't talked about how we help folks if there's
- 2:45Speaker 2: a shutdown. They talk about the pain they want to
- 2:48Speaker 2: flipt on the American people. We're fighting to help the
- 2:51Speaker 2: American people, help families, and healthcare is obviously critical to that.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So some Democrats have said, if there is an assurance
- 2:58Speaker 1: from the White House that that will be good faith
- 3:01Speaker 1: negotiations about Obamacare subsidies in the next seven weeks, they
- 3:06Speaker 1: might consider voting for a continuing resolution to keep the
- 3:09Speaker 1: government open. Are you one of those?
- 3:11Speaker 2: I don't even know what that means? First of all,
- 3:12Speaker 2: good faith, have they been willing to negotiate on anything.
- 3:16Speaker 2: They haven't been. They slashed healthcare for the American people
- 3:20Speaker 2: in their big, ugly bill, slash medicaid, half a trillion
- 3:25Speaker 2: dollar cut to medicare as a result, and now we
- 3:28Speaker 2: have the premium tax credits for the Affordable Care Act
- 3:31Speaker 2: for people who buy their healthcare on the exchanges across
- 3:34Speaker 2: the country. Those expired at the end of the year,
- 3:37Speaker 2: but notices are going out in October. Rates are going
- 3:41Speaker 2: up right away. I know in my state, open enrollment
- 3:44Speaker 2: starts November first. We need to deal with this now.
- 3:48Speaker 2: In our state, if the tax credits aren't renewed, premiums
- 3:52Speaker 2: go up by sixty five percent. The estimate is that
- 3:55Speaker 2: eighty thousand people will no longer be able to afford
- 3:57Speaker 2: healthcare as a result. We're talking about And that's not
- 4:01Speaker 2: something that's happening tomorrow or seven weeks from now. That's
- 4:03Speaker 2: something that people are grappling me with right now. And
- 4:06Speaker 2: November first, they're getting to you.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Sure convinced that this particular approach that is so far unified,
- 4:11Speaker 1: House and Senate Democrats will yield political benefits for you.
- 4:15Speaker 2: This is about doing the right thing for the American people.
- 4:17Speaker 2: If you go and you talk to people, talk to
- 4:20Speaker 2: folks what they want to see. They want to see
- 4:22Speaker 2: the tax credits extended. They want to make sure there's affordable,
- 4:26Speaker 2: quality healthcare. They want to make sure their rural hospitals
- 4:29Speaker 2: are going to stay open. We've already seen jobs cut
- 4:31Speaker 2: at hospitals in our region as a result of the
- 4:35Speaker 2: Republican policies that have been put in place. They want
- 4:38Speaker 2: people who are standing up and fighting for the American people.
- 4:41Speaker 2: This isn't just about blue districts. This impacts every district
- 4:44Speaker 2: across the country. And Republicans are hearing it too. Republicans
- 4:48Speaker 2: are hearing these stories, yet they won't stand them. Well,
- 4:52Speaker 2: we need folks to come to the table.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And you need Republicans to We need and we need.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Republic No, we need your repulics even show up House.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Republicans aren't and here we just had a session in
- 5:02Speaker 2: the House. They weren't even there. The government will shut
- 5:05Speaker 2: down tonight. They should be here fighting for policy to
- 5:08Speaker 2: support their communities, and they can't even show up.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Washington Democratic congresome and Susan del Benny head of the
- 5:14Speaker 1: day Triple C. Thanks so much for coming in.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
