- 4:24I mean, I don't really hate my day job. I like my day
- 4:28job. Speak for yourself, I mean, sexy, y'all. Can't relate,
- 4:32can't relate. It's like I get paid a decent wage and the people
- 4:39that I work with are very you know, all the people that I help,
- 4:44you know, are great. So customer service sucks. Everything else that
- 4:49deals with people outside of your own comfort, your own home sucks. I
- 4:55want to do stuff like that's the rest of my life. This would be
- 4:58fun. This making movie ease or YouTube or whatever, something a little more
- 5:02on the creative end. So one day I will get that dream. I
- 5:06just want to run days. I just want to sit at home read books
- 5:10and then just talk about it and you know, go sleep, prince,
- 5:14repeat period. So welcome to the book Watchers. We're back again, even
- 5:21though I'm ac night. We haven't recorded in forever, but yet I haven't
- 5:26post started posting the anything about this podcast since fucking god almost last time.
- 5:31I posted an episode of this podcast because this thing has been on hold until
- 5:35we get enough episodes, because I am a what stickler. Last episode we
- 5:41posted on this was January twenty twenty three. But of course we wanted I
- 5:47wanted to do we do. We're in the midst of prerecording. So if
- 5:49you're listening to this now, hey, congratulations, we have gotten enough episodes
- 5:55to start posting again so we can get ahead of the curb. Any.
- 6:00So yeah, so today's episode we finished Jurassic Park franchise. That was the
- 6:08last episode we did. Now we are gonna be doing thumbing over to the
- 6:14ooky, spooky side of things today. We're gonna be talking about with our
- 6:21guest Tiff. We're gonna be talking about The hell Bound Heart by I f
- 6:28fellow gay Cli Burker ya yah, our fellow British gay. And we're gonna
- 6:39be in the realm of horror for quite a while for Lowell, you know.
- 6:44So that's gonna be fun. So Clyde Barker, where do I begin
- 6:51with that? Man? Where do I begin? I had stuff up,
- 7:00but let me let me just let me this stuff. So The hell Bound
- 7:10Heart is a novella, a horror novella created by Clive Barker. Clive Barker
- 7:16is a English novelist, playwright, author of film director, visual artists whose
- 7:23prominence was most was started coming about in the mid eighties with a series of
- 7:30short stories known as the Books of Blood Blood. He's a horror He's done
- 7:42a lot of horror stories and stuff, hell Raisers from the hell Bound Hearts.
- 7:47He's done stuff like there's a British horr film called Underworld that he's writing
- 7:54for. He also directs movies. Nightbreed is his creation, if you ever
- 7:58seen that, that's based on his novella The Cabal. There's a bunch of
- 8:05things. There's also an executive producer on the Candyman movie, the original one.
- 8:13So he's he's he's been around in the world of horror at ooky spooky
- 8:20shit. But today we're talking about The hell Bound Heart that was released back
- 8:26in November nineteen eighty six. Is considered a horror gothic gothic horror fiction.
- 8:39This is his third volume this story. This novella is placed in the third
- 8:43volume of his Night Visions anthology series and say Oh That The novella is released
- 8:52in nineteen eighty six but then it was rereleased as a standalone title because originally
- 8:56it was part of the anthology series. And then it was released by it
- 9:00ELF in nineteen ninety one as a little book and the book is fairly small
- 9:05by the way as well, if you're wondering, if you want to go
- 9:07check out and read yourself. This is the story that has Pinhead and the
- 9:13cindebytes that we know from the movies, but the Cinabytes there's a whole I
- 9:20have a whole conversation I want to do about the Cindabytes, but I must
- 9:22save that film. When we talk about the hell Raiser films, the friend
- 9:28the film series as a whole, on how they interpret on how Clive Barker,
- 9:33Clive Barker takes the Cindabytes and brings them to the to the big screen
- 9:41with the first film, and how he adapts his own story, because if
- 9:43you didn't know, he also directed the first film, so that's one.
- 9:48This is one of those few things a few times that the writer actually directs
- 9:52the film. Who wants to start us off on the journeys through the help
- 9:58Bound Heart? Yeah, if I'm glad you volunteers. Damn again, this
- 10:09is my first time on here. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going
- 10:11to do for my books. Okay, just just talk about it, like
- 10:16what so like your biggest takeaways, just a little bit about the plot and
- 10:20your biggest tech takeaways. We're pretty we're pretty like impromptu here, okay,
- 10:28like we're just vibing, see, because like my my thought processes. I
- 10:31was like, is this like spook do we tell like do we like?
- 10:35Okay, so this is like the whole plot of the book, and then
- 10:37we well, I mean, yes, I do talk about it. Yes
- 10:41we did do that. But okay, I take it because Jacob's usually one
- 10:48that does that. I take it. You're not You're not prepared for that
- 10:52today. No, I was not prepared for that today. Something that Jacob
- 10:56not you. Oh, I mean I could do it because like, like
- 11:00I mean, I listened to the book. I didn't. I didn't get
- 11:03a chance to like buy the book or like sit down and actually read it.
- 11:07I listened to it. And the way that they that you know,
- 11:15the audiobook is m you can only take so much from it, you know,
- 11:20then actually sit down and read it or reread it. Okay, well,
- 11:26I guess before we get into the plot. I have our residential plot,
- 11:33Bear go over the plot? What were yeah? What were your thoughts?
- 11:37How did you initially? What did you want to read this book or
- 11:45or in this case listen to it? Did you want to get into this
- 11:48before we came up to and be like, hey, you want to be
- 11:50you want to do the hell about heart? Uh? Yeah? It was
- 11:54on my to read list. I have like thirty or more books that was
- 11:58ahead of it because I was reading a whole series, so it was on
- 12:05that like I'm going to read it eventually. I don't really consume horror novels
- 12:16all that much. I'm more of like a fantasy, a fantasy and or
- 12:22oh gosh, what is it like? Uh? I wouldn't say post apocalyptic,
- 12:30but like like Hunger Games was a series that I really enjoyed. There's
- 12:35one called Matched, you know, nineteen eighty five, Like those kind of
- 12:39books to where like you know, like government controls everything and there's like ways
- 12:46are divergent like those kind of books. Those those are ones that I lean
- 12:50a lot towards, or like extreme like high fantasy, like like the like
- 12:56the like the Drifts books, ones that I've been like constantly reading on or
- 13:05I was leaning towards the Magic the Gathering books as well, things like that.
- 13:11So, I mean, I have read Stephen King, which I think
- 13:15is like the only few horror books that I have read, or from Stephen
- 13:18King himself. So it was a oh, I'm trying to think of a
- 13:26word. It was something that I'm not uncomfortable with. It's just I wanted
- 13:33to read it, like actually sit down and read a physical copy of it.
- 13:37Hearing someone read a book to me, especially on certain parts, made
- 13:41me feel extremely uncomfortable because when I don't know this dude who's reading to me,
- 13:48so I was like, uh uh, I would deposit, I gotta,
- 13:52I gotta step away. And it's not like the parts that were raunchy
- 13:56were I read very very adult books as well, so it's not like,
- 14:03Okay, I'm pulling out his penis and stroking himself while he's getting torn apart.
- 14:09Was uncomfortable for me. It was just like a stranger was reading in
- 14:13my ears. Yeah, and I was like, no, I don't want
- 14:18to hear you tell me about this. We stop. Yeah, that's a
- 14:22that's a difference scenario because I actually, well, I kind of read this
- 14:26book. I read along because with my dyslexia, reading I have addressed before
- 14:33in this podcast, reading is a pain in the ass for me. Sometimes.
- 14:35I luckily have a boyfriend who we FaceTime every night and we sometimes like
- 14:41to read books together. Well, he'll read Timmy and that was one of
- 14:46the books that he read, Jimmy's. We read The Ring together like that
- 14:48and he's like, hey, you want to hell about Heart And I'm like,
- 14:52fuck yeah, I've never read any read the thing that inspired the hell
- 14:56Raizor film, and of course with a new one that came out in not
- 14:58to longbo four, I was like, fuck yeah, let's read it.
- 15:01And then that's how I got to read it. And it was well again
- 15:07because like you had someone that you trusted it up and that you're comfortable with,
- 15:11and like I said, we kind of have the same situation at the
- 15:13same time, you have a stranger read it to you. Well, I
- 15:16had somebody that I'm like dating someone that I know, so same same but
- 15:22different, same same but different. Yeah, but I mean the overall take
- 15:28of it like it was it, It was a I enjoyed it. I'm
- 15:35trying to like think of like words and like they're not coming to me like
- 15:39I really enjoyed the book the way that the way that it was paced.
- 15:45It was a short read, you know, like I'm pretty sure that I
- 15:48could have finished it in one day, but I didn't. Whenever I go
- 15:52work out, I like to listen to audio books a lot, so like
- 15:56at the beginning, I listened to some music because it keeps me, like
- 16:00keeps the the pace going. And then once I get into like weightlifting and
- 16:06I'm not having to like force myself to run longer than what I'm comfortable with,
- 16:12I just sit there and I listened to my books while I'm while I'm
- 16:17doing my reps. So I think I finished it in about a week or
- 16:23so, because forty five minutes to an hour hour and a half is like
- 16:30my workout time usually. So and like the last like let's say, like
- 16:37thirty minutes of the book, like it was either I was in my car,
- 16:41sitting in my sitting in my driveway listening to it, or you know,
- 16:47taking the post workout shower. And I loved I loved the slow decline
- 16:56of Gosh. I can't remember her name. Oh, I can't remember her
- 17:03name. What was her name? Uh, let's see, it was I'm
- 17:14I'm opening up my book app now because I do have it on my book
- 17:17app. I have a book. I have a book right here. Uh,
- 17:21let's see Julia? Was it? Julia fucking I hate Julia. She
- 17:26is such she is such a fucking slut. We don't sludge shame here on
- 17:33this podcast here, but she's just trash. She's fucking trashy as all hell.
- 17:41Like, Okay, well why why I want to know why you think
- 17:45Julia is slutty? For a second, because like from my with her fucking
- 17:49brother in law before she even got married to his brother, that's just a
- 17:55cheater. That's just trash, not trash as in sexual, trash as in
- 18:00a trash person. Okay, yeah, that's just a trash person. But
- 18:08like I got, I got that part of it. But from what I
- 18:12could tell was that she wasn't really happy in her marriage and that she did
- 18:17have a connection with uh what's his tits? And Frank Frank, Yeah,
- 18:23Frank, like she she wanted she like, but words what are they?
- 18:32Today? I feel like she felt like it was too late for her,
- 18:37that she was already getting married to Frank's brother. So and the whole conversation
- 18:42between her and Frank whenever he was coming back, you know, like it
- 18:48felt a little manipulative, but at the same time, like he could have
- 18:56been meaning what he said whenever He's just like if if I had you,
- 19:00if you were married to me instead of my brother, Like like I would
- 19:04have had a reason to live, Like I wouldn't have searched out what I
- 19:10what, what was my what was basically my demise? Okay, so ill
- 19:17it seemed a manipulative, you know, I was just like, but at
- 19:21the same time, I'm like, let's give him the benefit of the doubt.
- 19:22Maybe he thought that way. You know. Well, here's the thing.
- 19:26I want to take back what I said about Julie being a slut.
- 19:30She's just trashy, all right. She could have if she wasn't happy,
- 19:33like even before she got married to Rory, Frank's brother. Yeah, she
- 19:40could have just left. She could have just left him either way, but
- 19:44she stuck it out, and now she's in she's in a marriage that she
- 19:48feels trapped in and like it's just one of those things like if she wasn't
- 19:53happy, she should have just left, but instead, to be honest,
- 19:59yeah, a good guy. Yeah, he's a good guy. And he
- 20:03doesn't. He didn't deserve what happens to him in the end, which we'll
- 20:06get to in a few minutes. But yeah, it was just really shitty.
- 20:11And then the real slat in this whole book is Frank. Because Frank,
- 20:19he's living his whole era, his whole era, hits his whole lifestyle.
- 20:30Shit, it's not, it's not. He literally got into that position
- 20:34because he's all like, he's just all like, no woman is able to
- 20:38be a pleasure me. I need like pleasure coming from the gods. Basically,
- 20:44it's like, so this is a perfect see this is a perfect segue.
- 20:48Let's to the plot of the story. So literally, the book's the
- 20:53very first chapter of this book is of Frank trying to solve the puzzle of
- 21:00the what do they call it? The is it the lamberkan the lemercans box?
- 21:04All right, So he's literally trying to solve the puzzle, right,
- 21:11and he does. He opens it and summons up the Cenobites. Now the
- 21:15description, nah, I don't know, like I must have misread it because
- 21:19when the cinabites popped up, like, they weren't exactly what I expected them
- 21:26to be. Let me see, there was like four centabites that popped up.
- 21:36Let's see. Let me just like look at the description. Let's see
- 21:44it's close someone which were soon too and through its skin head's nothing. I
- 21:49think the like pinhead was the one that like was the one that talked to
- 21:53him. It's like, what is your desire? And like he was so
- 21:57shot, he was so shocked that he couldn't really respond. But like I
- 22:03found the description of the one he was talking to. Yeah, so it
- 22:07says like it's clothes, some of which were sewn to and through its skin
- 22:11hid its private parts. There was nothing in the dregs of its voice or
- 22:15in its willfully disfigured features that offered the lap the least clue when it spoke.
- 22:22The hooks that trans fixed that, that transfixed the flaps of its eyes
- 22:26were wed and by intricate system of chains passed through the flesh and bone light
- 22:32to similar hooks through the lower lip. We're teased by the motion exposing the
- 22:37goal listening meat beneath talk to him. Yeah, it isn't that. We
- 22:41do see that one in the movie. Though. It's but it doesn't even
- 22:45talk. It's just like chitters its teeth, does it yeah, I wanted
- 22:51to go back and watch. Well you're talking about the talk about the original
- 22:55of the remake, the original original, Well, in the original, yeah,
- 22:59we do see and we do technically see it in the in the remake,
- 23:03that's the one where that we're just constantly just chitters its teeth. There's
- 23:08because there's a lot of there's some of the semites they mentioned that don't even
- 23:12appear in any of the movies, like the well is it the Engineer is
- 23:18what they call her. The Engineer I think is like the leader of the
- 23:22scena bite. Yeah, but that one doesn't appear in the movies, like
- 23:26some of them don't appear at all, And the Hell of Priest is only
- 23:29shown maybe once or twice throughout the book twice at least. And it's just
- 23:34yeah, they do describe Pinhead. They do describe the Pinhead. It's literally,
- 23:40it's literally the one. It's it's the second one that talks like it's
- 23:45like, do you understand? Do you understand? The figure beside the first
- 23:48speaker demanded. Its voice, unlike that of its companion, was light and
- 23:51breathy, the voice of an excited girl. Every inch of its head had
- 23:55been tattooed with an intricate grid, and at every intersection of horizontal, horizontal,
- 24:00and vertical access a jeweled pin driven through the driven through to the bone.
- 24:07Its tongue was similarly decorated. Do you even know who we are?
- 24:11It asks, So like that's Pinhead right there. So the thing about the
- 24:15remake of Hell Raiser is that that was the most faithful description of the of
- 24:21Pinhead, because like here Pinhead is described as feminine, but in the original
- 24:26movie it was portrayed as a more masculine figure, which we'll get into in
- 24:32the movie when we talk about for the next episode, we talk about the
- 24:34movies because I have some contexts for that why they did what they did right
- 24:40too, A lovely mega fan, I know, right, So anyway,
- 24:44to like get on with the plot, like this is like he interacts with
- 24:48this after he solves the Lemmercan box. As he's like getting close to solving
- 24:52the puzzle and opening the box, he begins hearing ringing of bells, like
- 24:57kind of like church bells, and when he finally solves it that everything goes
- 25:02silent. The lights in this in the room he's even goes off, and
- 25:03then finally like a light appears, and that's where the cenobites are, and
- 25:07we see I believe there was four centavites, and there were supposed to be
- 25:11five, but it said one of them tells him that the fifth one hasn't
- 25:15appeared yet because it's supposed to be the engineer. And yeah, and they
- 25:22offer him, they do offer him like untold ecstasies like because that's what that's
- 25:30the whole reason why Frank got the damn box in the first place was so
- 25:36that way he can experience new levels of basically just sexual pleasure. All right.
- 25:42We're not talking about drugs, We're not talking about like alcohol or like
- 25:48anything else. It's just pure sexual desire. That's what drove him to get
- 25:52to like solve this box. And he gets it, and he gets even
- 25:55more than what he asked for. And that's a scene that Tiff was describing
- 25:59or earlier at the whole like, you know, he's basically experiencing like the
- 26:03most like excruciating pains, but yet somehow he finds pleasure in it and just
- 26:08ends up masturbating through the whole thing. And I'm gonna be honest, like
- 26:12I made the mistake of bringing this book with me to work, because when
- 26:15I'm at work there's times where it's just dead. So I'm reading it and
- 26:18when I got to that scene, I'm like, oh, oh, oh,
- 26:22okay, I'm gonna put this down. This is I just realized it's
- 26:26not safe for me to have out here. I made a mistake. I'm
- 26:30sorry, like nope, like please nobody. Like I'm just so glad mind
- 26:34reading doesn't exist because if people who were reading my mind, like as I
- 26:37was reading it, I'm just like, oh, oh god, no,
- 26:41where were you reading it? Well, like okay, so like so we
- 26:45set up at events outside of like stores and gas stations, right, and
- 26:51like my book the book cover isn't even isn't conspicuous, right, It's just
- 26:55a dark book cover. It's not flashy, and like the words are pretty
- 26:59small. Some no one can like see what I'm reading. But as I'm
- 27:02reading it, I'm like, oh no, no, I'm putting this away.
- 27:04I can't read this here. I didn't I didn't expect it to be
- 27:07that graphic. So I realized my mistake and I put the book away for
- 27:11the rest of the day and did not touch it until I got home.
- 27:15But I was like, oh, no, what what am I doing?
- 27:22Fuck? Can't can't relate. I read like Ronte fan fiction out in public,
- 27:26and if you read what's on my screen, that's your fault. I've
- 27:34read other books that have pretty like erotic, uh like pretty erotic scenes,
- 27:40and I'll just read it without like without like any shame, right, But
- 27:45just this, just reading this book and that scene here, the mutilation and
- 27:51the freaking uh just the just the self pleasure from the middle mutilation was like,
- 27:56oh oh god, no, this is like, oh oh why,
- 28:03oh god. I was just like, no, no, I can't keep
- 28:10a straight face while reading this. Like people would like walk by me and
- 28:14they would just see the look of just like disgusted on my face as I'm
- 28:18reading that scene. I'm just like, uh, not gonna lie. I
- 28:21made that kind of face at the gym today. Well, let's to the
- 28:25book because I was and it was like really right after like my last set,
- 28:30before that exercise, and I was going to go on to something else
- 28:33and you just hear go to daddy, and I was like, I know,
- 28:37I was like that too. I was like and like I made eye
- 28:41contact with the dude who was next to me, and I would just have
- 28:45this like like this ill face, and I was like, oh my bad,
- 28:48funny funny thing when that scene came up here, my belavor was reading
- 28:55it to me. He's like, come to Daddy, and I'm like,
- 29:00hey, bo oh my god, let's see. Let me see here.
- 29:07I'm just gonna like, let's see. He begs, he basically begs them
- 29:12to like to show him like the just the pleasure that they offer, right
- 29:21yeah, And then they do and he just starts like basically all his senses
- 29:25get dialed up to a million, so he feels everything around him. He
- 29:30experiences everything like extreme to the like the most extremes and it's just pain and
- 29:37let me see, let's see here. I'm not gonna read it. I'm
- 29:40not gonna read it a passage out of this, but I'm gonna see,
- 29:41oh my god. He like flooding his system from each nerve, ending a
- 29:45taste bud like like fresh sensations flooding his system series were no less sensitive and
- 29:52then like, h yeah, I was just like just oh so yeah,
- 30:07moving on. Yeah, he basically just like it ends with how you expect,
- 30:15and like in the end, the zenobytes just duce out and he's launder,
- 30:18and like only one of them's left, and I think it's the I
- 30:22think it was the Pinhead one. And like I think she's the one that
- 30:30takes him back to their reality and he's basically trapped in this other reality where
- 30:37the Zenobytes dwell. Yeah, and so basically they continue to give him the
- 30:45pleasure that he was looking for, but it's just just torture twenty four seven,
- 30:51Right, pain and torture, pain and pleasure are one and the same.
- 30:56Yeah, that's what the Zenobytes believe, and that's what the that's why
- 31:03they call they call themselves explorers to the most like deepest regions of playing of
- 31:07pain or like of pleasure. Right, and just yeah, yeah, chapter
- 31:15one is not safe to read. Like it's a very disturbing chapter, So
- 31:22just be warned. And so moving on from that, like that's when we're
- 31:27introduced to Frank's brother and sister in law. His brother's name is Rory,
- 31:33his sister in law is Julia. And as you as we already said,
- 31:38we think very little of Julia. She's just a very overall trashy person.
- 31:44I mean, there you could you could find sim you can sympathize with her.
- 31:47Because like, some people just find themselves in those situations and it's out
- 31:49of their control. But for me, like I just I just don't have
- 31:53a great opinion of her. She seems she seems to me like very high
- 31:57maintenance. I mean, what she does later on the book, what what
- 32:02she becomes as the characters like, yeah, if she wasn't trapping, if
- 32:07she wasn't a fucking shit person before she is by Dan, the book,
- 32:10oh yeah, and so like it talks so like. The next few chapters
- 32:16are just about them getting situated into their new house. So Rory and Frank,
- 32:22after their parents died, they inherited their house and basically shared ownership of
- 32:27their parents' house and but things it's been empty for years. Occasionally Frank will
- 32:34show up and use it as like a trap house for his little sexual escapades.
- 32:39And in fact, this is where Frank was when he summoned the xenobites.
- 32:46So they move in, and uh so Frank and Rory they move in.
- 32:52I'm sorry Rory and Juliet. They move in, and she's not exactly
- 32:57happy that they moved there, but at the same time, like she wants
- 33:00she's giving it a shot because like Rory thinks that moving into this house would
- 33:06be exactly what they need to, like, you know, spice up the
- 33:08relationship, do something different, what what have you. And they also meet
- 33:15another character who's basically becomes uh, she's basically this little, this little love
- 33:24sick local girl. Her name is Kirsty in the movie. In the book,
- 33:30she's a neighbor. But in the movie she's actually there. She's actually
- 33:37she's Rory's daughter. Yeah, well into that, Yeah, we'll get into
- 33:43that. But she's just a neighbor. Yeah, she in the book,
- 33:45she's a neighbor, and she's actually she has a huge crush on Rory and
- 33:50she she's she thinks that he could do so much better than Julia, even
- 33:53though she's even though she's envious of Julia's look because looks, because Julia is
- 34:00what she would call a natural natural beauty doesn't really have to put much effort
- 34:05into looking good, while Kirsty is just kind of plain looking, but that's
- 34:08not important. So she tries to be friends with Julia, mainly just because
- 34:17she wants to get closer to Rory, and Julia is more it's just more
- 34:22closed off about it. But throughout the book, for the next like couple
- 34:29chapters, Julia becomes fascinated and enamored with this one room in the house.
- 34:35It's the it's actually the master bedroom, but because of how like when they
- 34:39find it it's in, it's pretty damp. It's old, dirty and musty,
- 34:45and even though Rory says that they can fix it up, Julia convinced
- 34:50them not too because it's too damp and she doesn't really want to make that
- 34:53into their personal bedroom. So they set up shop somewhere else, and she
- 34:58like makes it her personal product to slowly clean up the room. At one
- 35:06point though, Rory tries to help her clean up the room and he accidentally
- 35:10cuts himself on a rusty nail in one of the support pillars in the room,
- 35:15and his blood gets gets all over the place. And let me tell
- 35:21you something, Rory is a is an upstanding guy. He's really cool,
- 35:23doesn't deserve what he what happens to him, but he's a bit of a
- 35:27bitch when it comes to blood. Dude almost like passes out at the side
- 35:30of his own blood, and so she ends up taking him to the hospital
- 35:37to get stitches. When she comes back and she comes into the room,
- 35:40who does she find but the just desiccated corpse of Frank. And yeah.
- 35:51So Frank basically even though he was trapped in that he was trapped in the
- 35:58other planet existence with the cenobites because his brother's blood got spilled in that room.
- 36:04It gave him enough energy to escape. But when he escaped, he
- 36:08was just this like pile of meat and bones, all disgusting and ugly.
- 36:16It's like, it's just one that was like one of the other scenes in
- 36:19this book that made me go like, like visibly I made a face when
- 36:23that's at this scene because like when he reveals himself to Julia, she freaks
- 36:28out and he tells her, no, wait baby, it's me Frank.
- 36:34You know the guys you know, your your husband's brother who you slept with
- 36:37before you actually married my brother. Wow. And yeah, so he convinces
- 36:45her to help him. So he tells her that he needs more blood because
- 36:52blood was his brother's blood was what made him strong enough to escape the cenobites,
- 36:55and he's gonna need a lot more blood if he's going to be able
- 37:00to like fully recover and escape the influence of the cenobites. So, and
- 37:07this is the part that like got to me about Julia, because even though
- 37:10she was disgusted and horrified by the fact that her brother in law slash Lover
- 37:21is now this horrid creature, like, she actually helps him without without much
- 37:30resistance. She's just like, oh, well, I guess I just I
- 37:35want to help him. And how does she help him? By luring men
- 37:39into this house, drawing them up into that room, and then she would
- 37:45kill them and when their blood is spilled in the room, Frank will absorb
- 37:50the blood and he slowly reconstitutes himself. So she does this to like I
- 37:57think she kills what like three or four men. Yeah, yeah, so
- 38:07she and she would do this by like whenever Rory's at work, she would
- 38:12go out to like a bar, meet a guy, convinced him to go
- 38:15back to the house, and once they're in the room, Like the first
- 38:19time she killed somebody, it was like, really she killed a guy.
- 38:22It was really messy, and it's like she got blood. There was blood
- 38:25everywhere, and the dude, I think the dude almost escaped the house.
- 38:29And then Frank showed up and like just murdered the ship out of the guy
- 38:36and like and then she rinsed and repeat with like three other guys, and
- 38:42I think the and then the very very last man that she ends up killing
- 38:47was Rory himself, which is sad. But before that happens, Kirsty she
- 38:59she was coming thinking about Kirstie is that she was becoming a bit obsessed with
- 39:04Julia and Rory, Like she was very infatuated with him, and she was
- 39:08always trying to like really like get closer to Julia and and Rory by extension.
- 39:15And at one point when she was coming, stopped stopping by their house
- 39:19for a visit, she sees Julia taking one of the men into the house
- 39:23and she was really shocked and realizing because like she assumed that I was that
- 39:28Julia was having an affair, which kind of do you think about it?
- 39:36But it's not important. So she ends up Kursy ends up sneaking into the
- 39:44house and she stumbles upon the crime scene like they just killed a man,
- 39:53and she barely manages to escape. And when she escapes, she actually she
- 40:04snatches and steals the Lemurcan box and Frank freaks out and he's like, no,
- 40:10don't do anything with that. If you do, it'll, like you
- 40:14know, if he just gets really he gets really freaked out. She does
- 40:16manage to escape, like the way she manages to escape from Frank. When
- 40:22she grabbed the box, he was gonna he was coming at her, but
- 40:24he stopped when she had it, and he tells her, like, put
- 40:27it down, it's not safe, right, give me the box, and
- 40:30she's like, oh you want this, ye. She eats the fucking box
- 40:35out the window and he freaks out, and then that momentary distraction was enough
- 40:38for her to escape the house, and she does escape. The thing is
- 40:43she is. She does get hurt in her escape, and she ends up
- 40:46in the hospital. And when the thing is when the paramedics found her,
- 40:52she was clutching lemercan box with a death grip and they couldn't pry out of
- 40:55her hands. So when she comes coherent, she wakes up to the hospital.
- 41:00Doctors ask her a few questions, and she's very she plays dumb.
- 41:04She actually she doesn't remember who she is to avoid revealing like like what she
- 41:09saw and risking Julia and and by extension, Frank figuring out where she is.
- 41:17So when the doctors leave her alone for a minute, she starts studying
- 41:21the box and like a moron she's she opens it she like figures out the
- 41:27puzzle and opens it and summons the Cenobites. And because when you open the
- 41:34Lemmakins box, you either accept the Centavites offer of pleasure or they'll just simply
- 41:39just take your ass to their to their reality and give it to you anyway.
- 41:50So here this happens. The Centavites all appear in her hospital rooms.
- 41:57She freaks out. They try to offer her their their pleasures. She refuses,
- 42:00and they're like, all right, well you summon us, so we're
- 42:04taking you anyway. And she's like, no, no, don't I know
- 42:07where Frank is And they're like, yeah, right, we know where Frank
- 42:13is too, and he's currently experiencing the pleasures he asked us for. And
- 42:16she's like, no, Frank is not. He's not in his prison.
- 42:20He escate And the Cenobites are like, if this is true, you need
- 42:25to get you need to bring us, you need to provide proof. She's
- 42:30like, I can get the proof for you, just let me go.
- 42:31Let me go get it. And I'm like all right, well, we'll
- 42:36give you twenty four hours and if you don't and if you don't find him
- 42:38within that time period, we're taking your ass, So they let her go
- 42:44and she ends up sneaking out of the hospital and going back to the house.
- 42:49When she gets there, she's greeted by Rory and Julia, who are
- 42:53both acting like nothing's wrong, and she confronts them and she tells Rory everything
- 43:00about how Frank is like this desiccated corpse upstairs and Julia has been helping him
- 43:05by killing by killing people, but Rory just brushes it off, and she's
- 43:08like he's like, yeah, oh yeah, I know about I know all
- 43:13about that, and it's been handled. Frank's Frank is dead, and Uli
- 43:17and Kurt and Kirstie's like oh shit, like no, oh my god,
- 43:23I needed him and he even Rory even shows her the dead body, and
- 43:29she sees the body and like it's convincing, but she starts noticing something's enough
- 43:32about what's up. I knew exactly whenever she walked in and that was happening.
- 43:38Was like, dude, I was like they did it because did oh
- 43:44gosh. He's like, well, I still need skin, Yeah, I
- 43:49still need a skin so I can't walk around like this. And she's like,
- 43:52well, what do you suggest And I was like, oh no,
- 43:54oh no, yeah. Yeah. The thing is is that when she does
- 44:01see Rory, she notices that he's pretty much covered in blood, and she
- 44:07tells her that's when she confronts them both on like Frank and he tells her
- 44:10like, yeah, he's upstairs. He's dead. I killed him. And
- 44:14she sees the body and she's like, it's convincing. But when she looks
- 44:17at Rory and the way he's acting, he's acting like really weird, and
- 44:25I forgot what he said. I think he goes, come to day.
- 44:29I think he says, come to daddy, right he does, Yeah,
- 44:32he says come to daddy, come to Daddy. And that's when she's like
- 44:37ooh, and she that's when she realized it was actually Frank. Frank wasn't
- 44:45dead. He killed Rory and skinned him and now is wearing Rory's skin.
- 44:51And I was just like when I read that, I was like, no,
- 44:54no, not my boy, Rory. Oh these bastards. So now
- 45:06Kirsty has to like is now in deep shit because Frank is gonna kill her
- 45:10again. And the thing is is that when he's about to like he's about
- 45:17to kill her, and she realized and that's when she realizes that that's that.
- 45:22That's Frank, and she basically, uh, like Kirsty's running out of
- 45:29time. The center bites are slowly starting to close in on her. She
- 45:32can hear the bells and she can feel like it's like for her, it's
- 45:37like there's chains constricting her throat and she knows she's about to get taken by
- 45:43them. So she reaches out and she grabs him, and let me see
- 45:52here, what does she do? Oh? Yeah, so she reads she
- 46:00rips the face off of him. Yeah, she rips the face off of
- 46:04him, revealing like his real face, and like the bells that she was
- 46:08hearing, like she was only hearing them in her head, so no one
- 46:12else could hear him. But then, like when she rips off the skin
- 46:15on his face, the bells stop bringing in her ear and now she can
- 46:20actually hear him in the house around her, and it's like, uh oh,
- 46:25And that is when the cenobites up here, because that's when the centa
- 46:36bytes appear. Because the chain that she felt around her neck is relaxed and
- 46:40completely gone. She does have to like, she does have to like run
- 46:47from Frank because he's still the cenobytes don't exactly close in on him right away.
- 46:55He does attack her, and she has to avoid she has to avoid
- 46:59him. She feel I was like, they're just playing with them, are
- 47:02just playing with them? Yeah, And I think the I think the reason
- 47:08why they didn't come for him right then and there is because they probably couldn't.
- 47:13They wanted him to, like, they just wanted her to like yeah,
- 47:16like you said, they were playing with them, But it wasn't until
- 47:20she lures him back into that room. It's the master bedroom that they reappear.
- 47:24Let's see. Let's see here. Let me let me double check them
- 47:27a jump the check I in my book right here, if iron works still
- 47:37exploding, the bill is still really she started upstairs and blah blah the stairs
- 47:43flooring in and oh yeah, and uh, Frank kills Julia. He ends
- 47:53up sucking the life out of her, full on mummy style, just like
- 48:00even though Julia like was trying to help out, I was trying to help
- 48:05him by stopping Kirsty Kirsty Like, Frank was gonna stab Kursty with a knife
- 48:15and Julia was gonna hold her down, but Kirsty like sidesteps her and Frank
- 48:21ends up stabbing Julia instead. And he doesn't really care. He just ends
- 48:25up sucking the life out of her and continues his little game of cat and
- 48:29mouse with kurtsty and let me see yep, cat and mouse. Blah blah
- 48:37blah, la la dug where is the siege? She has a little bit
- 48:50sorry just yep. Yeah, she lures him back into the main room,
- 49:08so she hides. She hides in that in that like extra bedroom that they
- 49:14kind of use as a storage room. Yeah, and she discovers the dead
- 49:17body of one of the men. Yeah. It was like just like horribly
- 49:23stuffed into one of the trunks. Yeah. But when she thinks that he
- 49:28like that what that Frank is like no longer like in this this like in
- 49:35that area of the house. She slips out and tries to go back down
- 49:38the stairs to get out of there, but Rory ends up like popping out
- 49:43of one of the other rooms and it's like there you are, come to
- 49:46daddy, Yeah, because she started hiccuping. Yeah yeah, he finds her.
- 49:52H anyway, so she ends up getting cornered in that in the master
- 49:58bedroom. And also, like this is another reason why the center bites didn't
- 50:02exactly go for Frank right off the bat it's because they wanted to hear him
- 50:07say it's him, Frank. So when she got cornered in the master bedroom,
- 50:13that's where Rory's corpse is, and when she accidentally trips over the corpse
- 50:17and she looks at it and she says, oh, Rory, like,
- 50:22and Frank is all like, that's right, Rory, and she said and
- 50:28she's all like, Rory's dead. And he's like, hush, baby,
- 50:35You're not Rory. We know that, but nobody else does. Who are
- 50:40you then, poor baby losing your mind? Are you good thing too?
- 50:45Who? Though it's safer that way? Who hush baby? Oh my god?
- 50:49Like this dude was just gross. Yeah. Eventually he does say,
- 50:53yes, Frank's here, baby, Frank, that's right, I'm Frank.
- 51:00And that's that's exactly what the centa bites we're waiting for, because, uh,
- 51:08you know, a second, a second after he says that, the
- 51:13bell the bells start ringing again, and the and the light bulb in the
- 51:17room flickers to life, and there she sees dun dun, dun, dun,
- 51:24duntun. Let me see yea he hears a voice. He in trouble
- 51:31now, yep, he hears a voice. It says it set his name
- 51:37lightly, as if calling a child out to play. Frank and his face
- 51:42dropped for a second time that night and put a look of puzzlement. A
- 51:45flittic flitted across it and on its heels horror. Slowly, he turned his
- 51:51head round to look at the speaker. It was a cento bite. It's
- 51:53hooks sparkling behind it. Kursey saw three other figures, their anatomies catalogs of
- 52:00disfigurement, and he Frank looks at Kirsty's like you did this. At this
- 52:07point, the Centabites tell her to get lost. This is the this is
- 52:12It's no longer her problem now, and Frank tries to attack her, but
- 52:19he gets caught by a bunch of hooks and chains by from the centa Bites.
- 52:23She ends up fleeing the room and h let me see here. She
- 52:30looks back. She looks back and as she closes the room. He as
- 52:35she closes the door, and she begins to hear him scream and like I
- 52:39believe there's a point where she just sees him get completely ripped apart yea,
- 52:45And she as she's fleeing from the house, it's starting to like basically like
- 52:51destroy itself. Like, uh, let me see here. Yep, she
- 52:58sees him get torn apart, and she's dagger downstairs. Those were tolling everywhere.
- 53:07She used the bottom of again in the hall of the front door.
- 53:08But as she came within splitting distance of freedom, she heard somebody call her
- 53:12name. It was Julia. There was blood in the hall floor, marketing
- 53:15the trail from the spot where Frank had abandoned her. And let's see here.
- 53:23I believe one of the zenobites was like puppeting her Julia's body. Yeah,
- 53:31it was. It was the main one to hit the creed or whatever.
- 53:37The engineer, yeah, the engineer, yeah, the engineer. Yeah.
- 53:43So it was puppeting her. And I think it wanted to, like
- 53:45even though the cena bites promised to let Kirsty go, I think one of
- 53:49them was going to try to like trap her anyway. Either way, the
- 53:58the last thing Kirsty here's out of Julia's mouth is I'm the I am the
- 54:02engineer. She did not wait for She did not wait to see what else
- 54:09happens, because like Julia looked like she had her wedding dress on, but
- 54:14she was all grotesque and just broken looking and just ugly and kirsty. She
- 54:22instead runs out of the house and she breathes in fresh air. She looks
- 54:30back at the house. She like runs down the street, and like,
- 54:34when she comes to the end of it, she looks back at the house,
- 54:36but it doesn't look any different. It's like, even though there was
- 54:38all this crazy shit going on on the inside, the outside look completely normal.
- 54:44And when she turns to to keep going, she ends up running into
- 54:53a pedestrian. But it turns out this pedestrian was actually another puppet of the
- 55:00Cena Bites, because when when this pedestrian bumps into her, he ends up
- 55:04dropping the Lemurkin box in her hands. And so, yeah, so she
- 55:10still has it, and let me see what does she do with it?
- 55:19So it looks so it basically ends with her just she ends up keeping the
- 55:24Lemrikin Box and she basically safeguards it to make sure that nothing like this ever
- 55:31happens again. And and if it does, she wants, I guess,
- 55:37like she wants to like make sure that nothing comes out of it. But
- 55:42yeah, that's pretty much where the book ends. It was pretty gruesome and
- 55:46like, yeah, so I know like there, I know there other like
- 55:53plenty of other better they're better ways to describe the plot of the book.
- 55:57And there's a lot of and there's cement. There's some other information that was
- 56:00left out, mainly because some of it was too gruesome or too perverted to
- 56:07actually share in this episode. This is a very adult themed book, very
- 56:15like kids should not be reading this. No, it really and the movies
- 56:22really don't do it justice. It really doesn't because well, I mean honestly
- 56:28American, like Hollywood, any like movie Studio, They're not going to produce
- 56:35a movie this gruesome, though I think they have before they have. Yeah,
- 56:40well, you know this is I think the first one came out in
- 56:43the eighties, but I think it's just like the first movie. Yeah,
- 56:47didn't it come out in like the eighties or was the first Eraser? Yeah,
- 56:52it was eighty seven, literally a year after the book was published.
- 56:57Yeah, so I don't know, they've produced really fucked up movies, but
- 57:01yeah, I think like none of them had Well wait, did they have
- 57:05this much? Did those other movies have this much? Like erotic like body
- 57:09horror, I mean grindhouse films, that genre of like exploited exploitive horror was
- 57:19all kinds of like stuff similar to that that was like grotesque for the time.
- 57:23So I mean this, yeah, so this I mean I would say
- 57:25Hell Razor Or, the Hold on Heart's not so like its I wouldn't say
- 57:32it's out as out of pocket. I don't know, man like with with
- 57:37Hell Razor, Like I I there's literally been movies that have been worse when
- 57:46it comes to body horror. I can list one franchise in particular, which
- 57:52is the Palm Movies, because there's so much body horror in it that,
- 57:55like I've only watched the first one all the way through. I refuse to
- 58:00watch all the other ones just because I walked in once with my family watching
- 58:04it and the dude's arms or somebody's arms were like in this contraption and the
- 58:09arms were like turning slowly and you just you all this skin rip and then
- 58:16the muscles, and I was like, like I couldn't. Like this was
- 58:20like I was probably no more than like twelve years old, and I could
- 58:23I could not. I could not handle it. And I realized real quickly
- 58:28body horror is not really a thing for me. So like, if they
- 58:30could make movies like that, like the Saw movies, then they could they
- 58:36could have done the same thing with Hell Razor, to be honest, because
- 58:38Hell Raiser, I don't think it's as extreme as it's just the sexual nature
- 58:44of its sexual nature. Yeah, yeah, I don't think that any of
- 58:47those other body horror movies really like incorporate that sexuality into it. The euroticism.
- 58:53Uh yeah, Like that's an image I have, like a very like
- 59:05visual I'm a very visual thinker, so I can imagine almost perfectly how a
- 59:09scene is portrayed just by reading the book, and just that scene of the
- 59:15paint of just the grotesque experience and rahnessism that subscribed in this book, I
- 59:21could picture it, and I'm just like, oh, that's That's not an
- 59:23image I'm gonna get out of my head anytime soon. So yeah, I
- 59:31feel like, uh, I know you said, I know you said,
- 59:36like one like production company in particular would be like fine for doing this,
- 59:44But like in recent events, watching a few a twenty four films like fucking
- 59:52Watching Men just kind of sealed the deal for me with that because I'm like
- 59:55that was body horror that was I was like, oh, God, like
- 1:00:01it. That movie will make you uncomfortable, so uncomfortable. Uncomfortable. Yeah,
- 1:00:08it makes you extremely uncomfortable. And I was like, and I'm pretty
- 1:00:12sure that that's what they were going for, But I'm pretty sure that they
- 1:00:15could do. They could probably make this book into like the movie that we
- 1:00:20that people who have read it wants to see. H That being said,
- 1:00:28though, that remake, Oh that wasn't that was a great remake. Yeah,
- 1:00:32that remake was good. I really like how they made it to where
- 1:00:37like every time you solve one the like each configuration of Lemercan's box, it
- 1:00:45transforms into another configuration and you have to like solve it again, and then
- 1:00:52it also involves a sacrifice. I mean they talk about that in the book
- 1:01:00though, because in the first chapter, whenever Frank was like solving it,
- 1:01:05they do say how Frank had lured other people to solve this box. Yeah,
- 1:01:12and like how many times he's had people solved this box to get to
- 1:01:15the one that he wanted, because the one that he wanted was like was
- 1:01:22the one where the cinabytes would come out and asked them like, what,
- 1:01:25well, what do you want from us? So he had people solving this
- 1:01:31box for a while until he got the centabytes. Yeah, fat so everyone.
- 1:01:47So everyone liked the book. What was your thoughts on like, did
- 1:01:51you like this? Was? Let this is everything I wanted in a hell
- 1:01:54rasor book. I mean pretty much kind of like the first movie pretty much
- 1:02:01so outside of like a few things that difford, but we'll get into that
- 1:02:06when we get into the movie. But overall, I mean I liked the
- 1:02:07book. It was it's like gay, it's so no, I wouldn't say,
- 1:02:15well kind of gay, kind of the little gayness is in there.
- 1:02:20Something it's in there, very sexual, which I mean five, are you
- 1:02:27okay, mister Barker, are you all right? Like sir who hurt you?
- 1:02:36He was gay in the eighties. I mean he was gay in the
- 1:02:40eighties. I think a lot of things. Yeah, yeah, it's true.
- 1:02:45Yeah, it's like you could only succeed as a gay man if you
- 1:02:50were in Hollywood and he wasn't even in Hollywood. I know, I mean,
- 1:02:57I know it's true either way. Yeah, any final thoughts on this
- 1:03:02episode talking about The hell Bound Heart as a book, I loved it and
- 1:03:07was great. I want to read the Scarlet Gospels, which is like,
- 1:03:15but there's also something else you have through before you read the Scarlet Scarlet Gospels
- 1:03:17and it's another book of C. Barker's work the inroduces another character. Because
- 1:03:22the Scarlet Gospels is like the hell Bound Heart and another book because the characters
- 1:03:29from both of those are in that books. I need I have some reading
- 1:03:31to do same here. But yeah, if no, if now y'all guys
- 1:03:38have any more, have any more final thoughts of big guys listening today's episode
- 1:03:45and the hell Bound Hearts catches next week, if you will talk about the
- 1:03:49hell Raiser franchise films, mostly talking about the first and the newest one,
- 1:03:55mostly because honestly, two is okay, three is okay, and then after
- 1:04:08that it just gets kind of bonkers the last one. So there's the hell
- 1:04:15Bound Heart, there's the Scarlet Gospels, and there's hell Razor the Toll mm
- 1:04:21hmm. Those are the three in the hell Razor series. Yeah, but
- 1:04:29for these Scarlet Gospels, you need to read one another book that introduces another
- 1:04:32character, because it's like it's it'll be Pennhead versus another character from a totally
- 1:04:38different book that he wrote too. So I don't know, I'll have to
- 1:04:40ask my boyfriend the reading order of stuff because he knows the reading order of
- 1:04:43all this, and he gave me a whole spiel and I'm like, oh,
- 1:04:45I remember that. I don't remember that. Someone need I'm gonna need
- 1:04:48to find out. I'm gonna find out because I was paying attention and then
- 1:04:56foof gone. So but yeah, so thank you guys listening today's episode.
- 1:05:01Catch us next time. Let's talk about the movies. Until then, Bye
- 1:05:08bye bye, Pain and pleasure the same thing. I don't like pain.
- 1:05:15I don't do that. Oh my god. The audio book was narrated by
- 1:05:19Tom Holland. Tom, No, it wasn't was. I'm reading it right
- 1:05:28now. It says it was released in audio book format on November six,
- 1:05:32twenty eighteen. Narrated by horror film director Tom Holland. Oh it's a different
- 1:05:40Tom Holland. Yeah, there's two Tom Hollands. There's the okay, not
- 1:05:45the Little Boy Tom Holland. No, and we're not talking about the Spider
- 1:05:47Man Tom Holland. We're talking about the director. Tom Holland. Yeah.
- 1:05:51Like Psycho to Child's play, this man read to me. Yeah, Oh
- 1:06:00god, I don't know how I feel about that now. Oh No,
- 1:06:06year by all
