- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17For those of you watching the video podcast, you might be
- 0:20like, listen, Brian, you're not in your office.
- 0:22That is true. Today I am in the confines of my
- 0:26very own home and looking forward to diving into God's
- 0:29Word with you today. Today we are going to be in at
- 0:32least the last portion of Isaiah chapter 3, Isaiah 3, verses 16
- 0:40through 26th at the least, possibly to chapter 4 and verse
- 0:46#1 we'll see where we get to. The passage says this.
- 0:52Right now Isaiah is preaching against the sinful southern
- 0:57Kingdom of Judah with Jerusalem as its capital, which though
- 1:01they were supposed to be the people of God, the temple of
- 1:04Yahweh was there in Jerusalem. They were not worshipping God,
- 1:09they weren't worshipping Him exclusively, and they were not
- 1:13worshipping Him wholeheartedly or with a pure heart.
- 1:17Instead, they were doing a bunch of religious things and
- 1:21festivals and sacrifices, those things that got it set up for
- 1:25them, but they did it without regard to human life or
- 1:30flourishing care of others. And so it was just religious
- 1:35behavior without a devoted heart to God, to love Him and to love
- 1:41others. And so that's where we've been
- 1:43in verses 1 through 15. This is what we read now in
- 1:47verse #60 Yahweh also says because the daughters of Zion
- 1:52are haughty, they're proud, walking with heads held high and
- 1:56seductive eyes prancing along, jingling their ankle bracelets.
- 2:01Yahweh will put scabs on the heads of the Daughters of Zion,
- 2:05and Yahweh will shave their foreheads bare.
- 2:09On that day, the Lord will strip their finery.
- 2:12Ankle bracelets, headbands, crescents, pendants, bracelets,
- 2:16veils, headdresses, ankle jewelry, sashes, perfume
- 2:20bottles, amulets, signet rings, nose rings, festive robes,
- 2:24capes, cloaks, purses, garments, linen clothes, turbans and
- 2:29shawls. Instead of perfume, there will
- 2:31be a stench. Instead of a belt, a rope.
- 2:35Instead of beautifully styled hair, baldness.
- 2:38Instead of fine clothes, sackcloth instead of beauty
- 2:42branding. Your young men will fall by the
- 2:45sword, your warriors in battle. Then her gates will lament and
- 2:50mourn. Deserted, she will sit on the
- 2:52ground. On that day, seven women will
- 2:55seize one man saying we'll eat our own bread and provide our
- 2:59own clothing. Just let us bear your name.
- 3:02Take away our disgrace. Now these, this is one of those
- 3:07passages in the Bible where we are entering into a totally
- 3:11different society, totally different cultural expectations
- 3:15because any person in 21st century America is going to read
- 3:19through that and go, what in the world is going on?
- 3:23So verse #16 let's begin there. Yahweh says the daughters of
- 3:30Zion are proud. So he's talked a lot about the
- 3:33men, the rulers of Judah, and what some of their sins and some
- 3:38of their problems have been. And so now he draws attention to
- 3:41here's what the women have been doing.
- 3:44He says they are walking with heads held high.
- 3:47So there's pride here. You already mentioned that they
- 3:50are haughty. This isn't, you know, God's
- 3:53admonition against proper, you know, neck posture.
- 3:56This is saying they are proud instead of being humble, instead
- 4:00of realizing maybe who they truly are outside of wealth or
- 4:07status or possessions, even as we would read in verses 18
- 4:11through 23, like they just had an overabundance of riches that
- 4:17did not translate into, hey God, thank you for what you've given
- 4:21me and I'm going to care for others.
- 4:23But just like the men had destroyed the poor.
- 4:27And I think we'd read in verse #15 why do you crush my people
- 4:31and grind the faces of the poor? That there was this total
- 4:37abhorrence and and if you will, persecution of those that were
- 4:42in need. And instead of the daughters of
- 4:45Zion being those that would care poor the poor and give to the
- 4:49poor, instead they just heaped riches on themselves.
- 4:52So there they are. They're proud, heads held high
- 4:56and it says and seductive eyes prancing along, jingling their
- 5:03ankle bracelets. Now seductive eyes.
- 5:06You know, that translates well into today's day and age.
- 5:09You know, everyone kind of knows what that look is when someone
- 5:14is intending to be flirtatious, especially here, someone that
- 5:20they should not be flirtatious with, whether it was that the
- 5:23person doing the flirting was already married or they were
- 5:26flirting with someone that was married.
- 5:29Here you have these seductive eyes that even the way that, if
- 5:34you will, the way that we communicate with our faces, with
- 5:39our eyes, with our eyebrows, with our mouths, can actually be
- 5:44something that God pays attention to.
- 5:46Now, certainly he's not just saying, OK, they have seductive
- 5:49eyes and they're not actually doing anything about that like
- 5:52that. It's not leading them into
- 5:54saying no. No, the import here what God is
- 5:57trying to communicate through this poetic language is they
- 6:00have seductive eyes that even the way that they look at the
- 6:05world and look at people is with intent to be lustful and to
- 6:10destroy homes. And so here seductive eyes
- 6:13prancing along, jingling their ankle bracelets.
- 6:16Now that's not a thing nowadays that someone goes, oh, you have
- 6:20an ankle bracelet. You must be an immoral, A lewd,
- 6:24A lascivious person because you have an ankle bracelet and it
- 6:28doesn't translate 1 to 1 to to nowadays.
- 6:32But here these these women, they were wearing things that
- 6:35communicated to other people. Hey, I'm available and so, you
- 6:41know, flirt with me, spend time with me.
- 6:43And what God says in verse #17 is because of these people
- 6:48operating in pride, operating in lust, he says, what I'm going to
- 6:52do is I'm going to put scabs on the heads of the daughters of
- 6:56Zion, and Yahweh will shave their foreheads bare.
- 7:00God says, OK, you want to play the part of a harlot of a, of a
- 7:05prostitute, He says, I'm going to treat you like that.
- 7:09And so there's going to be shaved heads, which would be
- 7:12kind of a shameful thing. You can think even in our
- 7:14culture, though, an amount of hair thankfully doesn't have the
- 7:18same, like spiritual importance placed on it as another, you
- 7:23know, cultures in human history. You can think back to when
- 7:28perhaps Lindsay Lohan shaved her head and everyone went, wow,
- 7:32this is a giant cry for help from this particular individual.
- 7:37And so God says, I'm going to treat you shamefully as you have
- 7:43treated others with shame, as you have behaved shamefully, I
- 7:47am going to bring shame on you. And verses 18 through 23, God
- 7:51says with that giant list of clothing items, it wasn't that
- 7:56any of these items by themselves were particularly evil.
- 8:00You know, there's nothing wrong with a bracelet.
- 8:02There's nothing wrong with a headdress or a headband.
- 8:05There's nothing wrong with linen clothes or a shawl or a purse,
- 8:11but God says I'm going to take away all of your stuff.
- 8:14Can I ask you? Everything that we have will one
- 8:19day go to someone else. This house that I'm in right
- 8:22now, this microphone, unless it breaks and then no one wants it
- 8:26anymore. This laptop that I'm recording
- 8:28into, unless it breaks, everything is either going to go
- 8:32to someone else or it's going to break.
- 8:35We will not retain a single item that we have forever.
- 8:40Nothing. Everything will pass on whether
- 8:42it breaks or whether it goes to someone else.
- 8:45We can either choose with the stuff that we have that it will
- 8:49go to someone else that is in need, or we can try and hoard it
- 8:55until either we die or we throw it away because we just have too
- 8:59much stuff. Can I encourage you have
- 9:00generosity, not hoarded greed. Be the way that you think about
- 9:06your possessions. If God has given you a lot of
- 9:09clothing, man, praise the Lord. We read in First Timothy 6 that
- 9:13God has given us richly all things to enjoy.
- 9:17So enjoy the things that you have, but I want to encourage
- 9:21you, if you have more than you can use, if you have more than
- 9:27you can, you know reasonably have, then give some away.
- 9:31Like give it to the poor, give it to the needy.
- 9:34Give it to someone within your church that is in need of some
- 9:37clothing or you're like, man, that person is never dressed as
- 9:40good as I'm dressed. Well, help them out and give
- 9:43them some clothing, buy them some clothing.
- 9:45And I, I think far too often we, we value all the stuff we can
- 9:49amass and God would say to us, no, give it away.
- 9:53Like be generous with what I've given to you.
- 9:55I freely gave it to you. You can freely give it to
- 9:59others. Verse #24 he, he mentions here,
- 10:04I love some of the back and forth that he has going in here.
- 10:07Verse 24, instead of perfume, there will be a stench.
- 10:11So for these women that once had everything, God says, I'm going
- 10:15to give you a trade. And before where you perfumed
- 10:17yourself up and you smelled great.
- 10:19Now everyone that walks by you is going to go, oh man, that
- 10:22woman stinks. Says instead of a belt, a rope.
- 10:25So a belt is, you know, it's nice, it's leather, it's well
- 10:29put together for a specific intended purpose.
- 10:32And he says you're not going to get a belt anymore.
- 10:35You're going to get a rope. There could also be kind of a
- 10:38tie in there. A rope would be something that
- 10:42you would lead someone in, you know, slavery with or as you
- 10:47think about the southern Kingdom of Judah, eventually within the
- 10:50next hundred, 150 years after this was written, being deported
- 10:54to Babylon, that it was someone that was taken away.
- 10:58Instead of a belt, they have a rope.
- 11:00Instead of beautifully styled hair, there is baldness.
- 11:04I know many of my friends, even at Tabernacle have experienced
- 11:08this baldness and they would say, yes, I I should have
- 11:11appreciated my hair while I still had it, he says.
- 11:15Instead of beauty branding there, that would be an
- 11:19indication of slavery for these people.
- 11:22That just as they had no regard for the poor or for the needy,
- 11:27they only insisted on building up their own material wealth.
- 11:32That one day they would become a possession for someone else.
- 11:36Verse #25 Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in
- 11:40battle. Then her gates will lament and
- 11:43mourn. Deserted, she will sit on the
- 11:45ground. That as Jerusalem and Judah are
- 11:49defeated and the men, many of the men are either killed or
- 11:53taken away, what would be left in the ruins of Judah and the
- 11:58ruins of Jerusalem? We would read in chapter 4 and
- 12:01verse #1 on that day, seven women will seize one man,
- 12:05saying, we'll eat our own bread and provide our own clothing.
- 12:08Let us bear your name. Take away our disgrace.
- 12:11Basically, women not wanting to be.
- 12:15And I, I want to clarify here, this is not the way that God
- 12:18views women. This is the way often that the
- 12:21world has viewed women. You can read about it several
- 12:25times in in scripture that people did not want to be like
- 12:28the quote UN quote, old true or, you know, an old forgotten maid
- 12:34or maiden that was never married.
- 12:36No one ever wanted her. They don't want to be that
- 12:40person. And so even 7 women to one man,
- 12:43that's seven is you know, that number of completion.
- 12:47It's a a fullness. It's a full week is 7 days.
- 12:53You can think in Revelation 1 where it's mentioned the seven
- 12:57spirits of God. That's actually something that
- 12:59we'll walk through that it's the fullness of who God is and his
- 13:04glory, his justice, his love, his compassion, all of that.
- 13:07And so you're 7 women go to just one guy to say like, hey, it
- 13:12would be incumbent on the husband to provide for the food
- 13:15and clothing and shelter of his wife.
- 13:18And these seven women say, hey, we'll provide for our own stuff.
- 13:22We're we're not not coming to you assuming that you will take
- 13:26care of us will take care of us. We just don't want anyone to
- 13:29say, oh, these women are totally unwanted.
- 13:32There's going to be a large population disparity in Judah
- 13:38once Babylon comes through and demolishes Israel for their
- 13:43wickedness. So what do we do with this?
- 13:47I would say we we need to remember first of all that God
- 13:51is repulsed by pride. We are told in James 4, we're
- 13:56told in Proverbs, we're told in a bunch of different places that
- 13:59God resists the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.
- 14:03God has given us riches in whatever amount so that we would
- 14:10be thankful, we would enjoy them, and we would give out of
- 14:13our abundance to others. That we would never say.
- 14:16Until I have $1,000,000 I'm not going to be generous to someone
- 14:20else. Or until I have $100,000 I'm not
- 14:23going to be generous to someone else.
- 14:24No my friend, if God has given us 2 loaves of bread, then we
- 14:28have enough bread to be able to share with someone else.
- 14:31If God has given us 3T shirts, man, we've got enough to be able
- 14:36to give to someone else. If God gives us $2.00, we have a
- 14:39dollar to be able to give it to someone else.
- 14:42May we realize that who we are as children of God is mere
- 14:47stewards of what God has given. Everything we have belongs to
- 14:51God, and my life, my words, my time, my wallet, everything that
- 14:56I have needs to belong to God. So if God says be generous to
- 15:00that person, if God says go, serve in that area.
- 15:03If God says, I want you to spend time doing this, I want you to
- 15:06spend time in the word, whatever it is.
- 15:09I need to be faithful to say, God, you have given it all to me
- 15:14and to steward it, to manage it for the time being.
- 15:18I don't own it. And so I need to be faithful, to
- 15:22be kind, to be generous to others as you have been kind of
- 15:25generous to me. I need to eschew pride to ever
- 15:28say that I am better than anyone else.
- 15:32I need to love and to care for people.
- 15:35And I think even from this passage, as we'll see many, many
- 15:38times in the coming weeks and months as we travel through
- 15:42Isaiah, sexual immorality is something that God deeply
- 15:46judges. And so in my mind and what I
- 15:50view and what I think about and how I interact with other
- 15:55people, I need to have a purity of soul and spirit to say God
- 16:02put me together in my situation. God put me and Samantha together
- 16:07and till death do us part. That is what the Lord has put
- 16:10together. So I need to value that, not to
- 16:13be one with the seductive eyes or jingling ankle bracelets.
- 16:17So avoid ankle bracelets today, my friends, and may the Lord
- 16:21bless you. Thank you so much for tuning
- 16:23into this episode. Looking forward to continuing in
- 16:26Isaiah chapter 4. We're going to be looking at
- 16:29some great topics beginning next episode.
- 16:32Looking forward to that with you.
