- 0:01All it took was 12 seconds off the ground to change the world.
- 0:06There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:09Chad, your 1138 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:13yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.

- 0:31Here's the upgrade. The world may be certain you'll
- 0:33fail, but upgraded thinking knows you don't have to fly
- 0:35across the Atlantic to prove them wrong.
- 0:37You just have to get off the ground.
- 0:40Here's the story. In 19 O3, The New York Times ran
- 0:44a headline. Flying machines which do not
- 0:46fly. The smart money agreed.
- 0:49One professor called fly to Myth.
- 0:51The professionals had already declared that man wouldn't fly
- 0:54for a million years. Those were the headwinds, and
- 0:57two brothers from a bicycle shop in Ohio decided to fly straight
- 1:01into them. Wilbur and Orville Wright had
- 1:04almost nothing on paper. No college degrees, no powerful
- 1:08friends, no government money. Their rival, Samuel Langley, had
- 1:13the Smithsonian behind him and nearly $70,000.
- 1:16The Wrights spent $1500 funded by fixing bicycles.
- 1:20Langley's machine crashed into the Potomac River.
- 1:24But here's what the Wrights understood that the experts
- 1:26didn't. Everyone else was chasing power.
- 1:29Bigger engines, more thrust. Wilbur decided the real problem
- 1:33wasn't power at all. It was control.
- 1:36Anybody can get thrown into the air.
- 1:38The trick is staying up there and steering.
- 1:40So they did the opposite of everyone else.
- 1:43While rivals built machines to be stable, the Wrights built
- 1:46one. They could balance in motion the
- 1:48way you balance a bicycle. They read every book they could
- 1:52get. Then when the accepted science
- 1:54failed them, they stopped trusting it and build their own
- 1:57wind tunnel. Tested 200 wing shapes, made
- 2:00their own data. They chose Kitty Hawk, NC
- 2:03because the wind and sand gave them the most tries, not comfort
- 2:07feedback. Four years it was crashes,
- 2:10storms, mosquitoes and neighbors who called them the two poor
- 2:14nuts. Then on December 17th, 19 O 369
- 2:19days after the New York Times ran that article claiming man
- 2:22wouldn't fly for a million years, Orville adjusted the
- 2:25wings and the machine lifted off the sand under its own power for
- 2:2912 seconds. 120 feet. That's shorter than the wingspan
- 2:34of some planes flying today. It changed the entire century.
- 2:39Here's what I want you to take away from those 12 seconds.
- 2:42It didn't have to be a transatlantic flight.
- 2:45It didn't have to silence every critic at once.
- 2:48It just had to be real. It just had to leave the ground.
- 2:52The better story to tell yourself is I don't have to
- 2:54cross the ocean today. I just have to get off the
- 2:57ground. You're carrying something right
- 3:00now that the smart money says won't fly.
- 3:03You've been telling yourself you need a grand, undeniable victory
- 3:06to prove them wrong. You don't.
- 3:08You need 12 seconds off the ground.
- 3:11Tell me a story of getting off the ground at from
- 3:13chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and tell
- 3:17them what are you trying to get off the ground.
