- 0:03- Welcome back, Junkies.
- 0:05We are here once again for another episode
- 0:07of the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:10I'm here with the lovely, the beautiful,
- 0:13Shana, turn it in.
- 0:14I love it when she says it like that.
- 0:16- What's your name now?
- 0:17- I'm Olivia Rodi, and I'm, yeah.
- 0:21- Yeah, you are?
- 0:22- Yeah.
- 0:23You know that, like not too much of my girl sound,
- 0:27where she's like, yeah.
- 0:28- I don't, but I like it.
- 0:29- That's how it felt in that moment.
- 0:31- I love your new hair, by the way.
- 0:32- Thank you.
- 0:33If you are on YouTube watching this, I got a haircut.
- 0:37- Yeah, I love this bang.
- 0:38- I bang, but don't worry, everything is a-okay.
- 0:42In my life, we are--
- 0:43- Are you going through any mental stuff?
- 0:44- No, break down.
- 0:45- No, no.
- 0:46- For once, I think not.
- 0:48- You didn't cut them yourself.
- 0:49You had them professionally done.
- 0:50- Yes.
- 0:51- I think that points to mental health.
- 0:53- No, after seventh grade, when I cut my own bangs,
- 0:58I think it's like your bangs.
- 1:00And not the cut for me.
- 1:03We'll say that.
- 1:04I did it myself.
- 1:06We learned a lot of lessons.
- 1:08And that was--
- 1:08- It's a lapse along the way.
- 1:09- You know, professionals are professionals
- 1:11for a very good reason.
- 1:13- I cut my own bangs, but if I have had bangs
- 1:15for like a solid 35 years.
- 1:17- Okay.
- 1:18- So I got it down.
- 1:19- Yeah, I got it down.
- 1:20- Now it's just like, and keeping it--
- 1:22- Yeah, literally, it's just a straight line
- 1:24across my forehead.
- 1:25Like no one's gonna mess that up.
- 1:27- I got fully one day of like, you know, like, you know,
- 1:30like, shaking.
- 1:31- Oh, God.
- 1:32- I cut them too short before and then I just go,
- 1:36"Oh, God, I really don't care anymore."
- 1:38- It's the micro bangs.
- 1:39- It's the micro bangs.
- 1:40- The micro bangs are working in your favor, though.
- 1:43- I think trend right now.
- 1:44- That is true.
- 1:45I mean, there would be a point in my life
- 1:46where that would have made me break into tears.
- 1:48And I just like, myself in the mirror and I go,
- 1:51"Hat to the list."
- 1:52It's fine.
- 1:55- I don't care.
- 1:56- Eging is beautiful.
- 1:58- Eging is so great for it.
- 2:00- Literally, I just don't give a fuck.
- 2:02I don't care.
- 2:03- She says we know she's so good.
- 2:06Saying the most cruel thing to herself in the world.
- 2:09I love it.
- 2:11It's great.
- 2:12- I am very confident.
- 2:13I think I'm beautiful.
- 2:14- Yes.
- 2:15- If I ever have a massive zither cut my bangs too short,
- 2:17I go, "What's the worst that could happen?
- 2:20I don't care."
- 2:22- I think I hear you impress.
- 2:24- I love it.
- 2:25- I love it.
- 2:26- I work from home.
- 2:27My husband thinks I'm cute.
- 2:29Love you, I think I'm cute.
- 2:30- I don't care.
- 2:31- That's true too.
- 2:32- I think you are all of the above.
- 2:35- And you know, in last week's episode,
- 2:37we talked briefly about M Night Shyamalan.
- 2:41- Shyamalan.
- 2:42- And I really cannot say his last name.
- 2:45So I do just call him that.
- 2:47- Shyamalan.
- 2:48- And his kind of career defining obsession
- 2:52with plot twists.
- 2:53- Shyamalan twist?
- 2:54- Yeah, the Shyamalan twist.
- 2:56And I'm kind of left us as we are leaving that episode,
- 3:01wondering what makes a good plot twist?
- 3:05Like what makes or breaks a plot twist?
- 3:07And Shyamalan, I'm curious,
- 3:09in your mind, what makes a good plot twist?
- 3:13- Okay, so I think a good plot twist is twofold.
- 3:17A legitimate twist.
- 3:19Where at the end, you don't see it coming
- 3:21and it leaves your jaw open, you're shocked.
- 3:24But at the same point, it has to be a twist
- 3:27that makes sense in the film
- 3:30and doesn't change the tone of the movie.
- 3:32- Okay.
- 3:33- So we'll have some examples of like good plot twists
- 3:35and bad plot twists throughout.
- 3:37- Mostly movies, but some TV shows too.
- 3:39And I think that if you're watching one movie
- 3:41and all of a sudden a twist comes in,
- 3:42it kind of changes the entire plot
- 3:44or it feels like something was tacked on and it rushed,
- 3:47then I think it's a bad twist.
- 3:49Like a twist for a twist, say.
- 3:51- Exactly, like you can tell that the writer wasn't like,
- 3:54okay, and then this happens, it's gonna be great,
- 3:56it's gonna be crazy.
- 3:57They were just like, yeah, how do we end it?
- 3:58I don't know, do something weird.
- 4:00Like kind of like pretty little wires.
- 4:03Did you watch that show?
- 4:04- I did not, but okay, who was the writer the whole time?
- 4:08- Oh no, I'm thinking of Gossip Girl.
- 4:10(laughing)
- 4:13- I was like, you were close.
- 4:15Is there like a plot master in pretty little wires though?
- 4:20- Okay, so I was kind of running the behind show.
- 4:23- Oh, I think you're like, who was Gossip Girl?
- 4:25- I'm gonna have like millions of YouTube video essays
- 4:30breaking this down for you, but essentially I'm like,
- 4:33pretty little liar.
- 4:34- Oh, we're gonna be talking about spoilers
- 4:36for popular media by the way.
- 4:38We're just throwing that out there.
- 4:40- Yeah.
- 4:40- A lot of it will be things that can't be--
- 4:42- That are very old.
- 4:43- That are older, so we're not gonna say any twist
- 4:45of movies that have been out like two weeks ago
- 4:47and just fuck it up for everyone.
- 4:48- So just disclaimer.
- 4:49- Yes, and so pretty little wires,
- 4:52sums up these four girls who knew this teenager
- 4:56who ends up dead, right?
- 4:58And all of a sudden they start getting anonymous texts
- 5:01from this person named A.
- 5:04- Oh, okay.
- 5:05- And so the through line of the show is who is A.
- 5:10- Okay, I knew there was like a mysterious character
- 5:13who is gossip girl who is A.
- 5:15- Yes, yeah, I guess that through line makes sense
- 5:17and how you saw them together.
- 5:19I forgive you now.
- 5:20- Thank you, thank you.
- 5:21- You're welcome.
- 5:22- And so there's like a million A's.
- 5:25They were just going with it and they did like one
- 5:29of those classic tropes, which I kind of think
- 5:32like Game of Thrones writers, Fel victim too,
- 5:35is they wanted to go for the most shocking thing,
- 5:38but ultimately-- - Not necessarily
- 5:40that made the most sense.
- 5:41- Ultimately created like a plot hole
- 5:44or went against something that is like canon.
- 5:48- Okay, I know.
- 5:50- That's kind of the way that I look at it.
- 5:51- I agree, it's like if there's something
- 5:53that has been building it for years,
- 5:55especially it's hard for a twist in a TV show sometimes
- 5:58because it's like audiences have been with these characters
- 6:01for so many years that you want a satisfying conclusion
- 6:04and you want a good ending for these characters
- 6:06that you've gotten to know for years.
- 6:09Whereas a movie you get to know some characters
- 6:11for what two hours and then if there's a twist,
- 6:13you just leave the theater and you're like,
- 6:14"Oh shit, that was sick."
- 6:15- Yeah, you-- - But if it's like spoiler
- 6:17and how I met your mother, Ted's wife is dead
- 6:19the whole time.
- 6:20- I imagine he's telling his kids the story.
- 6:22How we met their dead mom?
- 6:23- That sucked.
- 6:24- Yeah. - That was a bad twist.
- 6:25- Yeah. - Because for years,
- 6:27like we've established that Robin and Ted
- 6:29are obviously into each other,
- 6:30but probably not the best couple.
- 6:32She marries Barney in like the second to last episode
- 6:36of the entire series.
- 6:38And the finale just undoes all of that.
- 6:39And then it's like, "Oh, your mom's dead,
- 6:40"I'm gonna go with Aunt Robin now."
- 6:41And fans were pissed, right?
- 6:43- Oh wow, yeah.
- 6:44- Yeah. - But yeah, I was never
- 6:46on how I met your mother, God.
- 6:48- Oh man, I love that show.
- 6:49- I think what's the actor's name,
- 6:53the main guy in it?
- 6:54- Ted, the guy who plays Ted Moe's video.
- 6:56- Yeah, I remember the actor's name.
- 6:57- He really liked him as an actor.
- 6:59- Really punchable face.
- 7:01- Really, really punchable face.
- 7:04- Oh my God.
- 7:05- Ted Moe's, we just kind of a punchable character.
- 7:09- Yeah.
- 7:10In hindsight, so is Barney Stinson.
- 7:13It's like at the time we all thought he was so funny.
- 7:15And now you look back and you're like,
- 7:16"Well, this guy's a borderline fucking ripist."
- 7:18- Yeah, I got like, "This guy's creepy as hell."
- 7:21Didn't age too well.
- 7:22- He was the naturel on the slightest.
- 7:23- Yeah.
- 7:24- Yeah, that was a terrible twist.
- 7:25And it's like Dexter becomes a lumberjack in the end.
- 7:28Everyone was pissed.
- 7:30It's like Danny, I don't know if those were twists
- 7:32but it's things that were kind of like disappointing endings.
- 7:35I think like, I don't know.
- 7:36Let's talk a good movie twist.
- 7:38What do you think makes a good twist?
- 7:40And like what movies do you think have great plot twists?
- 7:44- Yeah, so I think a lot of good twists in my mind
- 7:49are things that you saw like very faint
- 7:54or are little cues that they were like ultimately
- 8:00the main twist or you could see it within the story.
- 8:03- Yeah, like you even cut it on your first viewing.
- 8:06- But then after the twist comes you go,
- 8:07oh my god, I wanna watch that again
- 8:09so I can catch all the little Easter eggs.
- 8:10- Yeah, where you're like, "Oh, I should have seen it."
- 8:13I also really love the twist where you initially suspect someone
- 8:17but then you kind of clear the amount of the story
- 8:20but then they end up being really the bad guy.
- 8:22- Yeah, you're like, "How's it trusted my guy?"
- 8:24- Yeah, right, exactly.
- 8:25So I think a lot of the time,
- 8:28you give the audience the opportunity
- 8:30to figure it out ahead of time
- 8:33but it's still unique enough or not.
- 8:36So straightforward that like everybody guesses it
- 8:41within the first.
- 8:42Like, and I think the sweet spot is like,
- 8:45if people start getting it like one to five minutes before
- 8:50you're like, "Oh, okay, that's like the right area."
- 8:52- I agree, it's like when people start figuring out
- 8:54you put on your list of bad twists,
- 8:56- Smollignit.
- 8:57- Which I like.
- 8:58- But I figured that out.
- 9:00I was like, "It's a parasitic twin."
- 9:02- It's parasitic twin.
- 9:03- Oh yeah.
- 9:04- Because it's like the fuck is a parasitic twin.
- 9:04- Yeah, but you said you figured that out
- 9:06on the first like two seconds of the movie.
- 9:08I also have talked about this on the podcast
- 9:10that I have this weird obsession with parasitic twins.
- 9:12If anyone has a parasitic twin,
- 9:13- It is weird.
- 9:14- Please tell me all about it.
- 9:15I wanna know, I wanna meet your parasitic twin.
- 9:17- It is weird.
- 9:18- I don't know.
- 9:19- We can, I liked that movie, but the twist is a little jar.
- 9:22- A parasitic twin isn't weird.
- 9:24Your obsession with it is a little weird.
- 9:27- I know.
- 9:29- But no, I put that as a bad twist.
- 9:31- I also really like a plot twist with an unreliable narrator.
- 9:36And so like a lot of those stories have to occur
- 9:42within the first person.
- 9:44- Yeah.
- 9:45- So like a really great example of that
- 9:47is gonna be like a fight club.
- 9:49- Oh yeah.
- 9:50- Or like a memento.
- 9:52And within a fight club, like you are seeing it through
- 9:57his eyes and he's never named.
- 10:01You just know Brad Pitt, who is Tyler Dirtin,
- 10:04but you never know Edward Norton's character name.
- 10:08- I didn't get that one spoiled for me
- 10:09and I didn't see it until years after it came out.
- 10:11- I was shook.
- 10:12- I was like, oh I love Chuck Palinock.
- 10:15- Oh it was great.
- 10:16- And I actually have a signed book of his.
- 10:18It's not fight club, but.
- 10:20So I really like a twist like that.
- 10:23I think where it's first person,
- 10:25Shutter Island I guess is another one.
- 10:29- Yeah, that one shook me too.
- 10:30- Where I, well I guess it doesn't really fall
- 10:33into the first person narrative,
- 10:36but you are kind of bought.
- 10:39- Would you say, would you agree goes in the first person?
- 10:42- I think well you are watching this movie
- 10:44and you come to trust,
- 10:46I don't remember Leonardo Capriot's character name.
- 10:49But you're seeing you the movie through his eyes.
- 10:51You're trusting him.
- 10:52You're like, oh he's our main character.
- 10:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:54And at the end you're like, oh.
- 10:56- He's been crazy this whole time.
- 10:57- Oh yeah.
- 10:58- And it's one of those things where at the end
- 10:59you're like, okay now I need to rewatch that movie
- 11:01to see if there's any little hints.
- 11:04Throughout, it's like the most famous twist of all time,
- 11:07probably is six cents, right?
- 11:08- Yeah.
- 11:09- And it's like upon rewatch you get to see those little hints
- 11:13of like no one actually talks to Bruce Willis, right?
- 11:16Like no one kind of talks around him,
- 11:19but you don't realize that on your first watch.
- 11:22And then you have to rewatch it and be like, okay,
- 11:24I got this.
- 11:25- Yeah, it is like the part of a good twist
- 11:29is you kind of immediately want to rewatch the movie.
- 11:32- Yeah, yeah.
- 11:32- I think that is a great way to be like,
- 11:35oh what does that mean?
- 11:36Like I've definitely gone and like,
- 11:39so one, one movie that I think like kind of tried
- 11:44to have all these twists and turns,
- 11:46but ultimately like left the audience so confused
- 11:50that it didn't land, because you do risk running
- 11:53into that territory as mother with Jennifer Lawrence.
- 11:58I've never seen it, I've read plots and obses.
- 12:01- Yeah, you've got the plots and obses on it.
- 12:03- I've got the plots and obses on it.
- 12:04- So confused on what do you mean?
- 12:05And so, what do you mean?
- 12:08Yeah, what do you mean?
- 12:09- And so ultimately I think it goes back to that argument
- 12:13of are you just trying to twist a twist?
- 12:16Or is it like ultimately like kind of serving the--
- 12:19- Serving the overall story.
- 12:20- Yeah.
- 12:21- I think one of my least favorite twists
- 12:22and we talked about this earlier
- 12:24is this movie Hancock with Will Smith,
- 12:26where I remember the first half of that movie
- 12:28thinking it was so cool.
- 12:30It's this guy who has superpowers,
- 12:32but he's just kind of like, he got a drinking problem.
- 12:34He doesn't really care.
- 12:35He's like, I don't want to be a superhero.
- 12:37I just have enough superpowers.
- 12:39So he moves in with Jason Bateman and his wife
- 12:41who is Charlie's Theron.
- 12:43And I guess because he saved Jason Bateman
- 12:44from an accident or something, I don't know.
- 12:47Coming to find out, oh, what's a twist?
- 12:48Charlie's Theron's a superhero too.
- 12:51And also it's Hancock's wife from his past life.
- 12:56And it feels like they put two different movie scripts
- 12:59and just smushed him together.
- 13:00- I've seen that movie, but I remember none of it.
- 13:03- I remember watching this movie in the beginning
- 13:04and being like, this is a great movie.
- 13:06And then halfway through, you're like, wait, oh,
- 13:09I'm not enjoying this anymore.
- 13:10It's like a weird rom-comic son.
- 13:13And like, I don't know.
- 13:15Jason Bateman's kind of cocked like--
- 13:16(laughing)
- 13:19- Jason.
- 13:20- Jason, I had a sex dream about Jason Bateman
- 13:22like a couple days ago.
- 13:24Oh my God, I totally forgot.
- 13:26- You're good.
- 13:27- Yeah, he was great.
- 13:28- Oh, okay.
- 13:29- Yeah, he wasn't as good as Seth Meyers, but he was good.
- 13:32- Okay.
- 13:33- Well, okay.
- 13:34- Yeah.
- 13:35- Yeah, well, okay.
- 13:37- But yeah, I could see how that would make sense.
- 13:39And in your--
- 13:41- Seth Meyers being a good lover.
- 13:42- My sex dreams.
- 13:43- Yeah, he's good.
- 13:44Very attentive.
- 13:45- Yeah.
- 13:46- Anyway, watch the first half of Hancock
- 13:48and then just turn it off and don't watch it.
- 13:50- Just do not continue doing the time stamp.
- 13:53- Do not keep stamps.
- 13:54- You can have the last turn.
- 13:54- I can, I'll post it on social media in the episode drops
- 13:57because there's a very hardcore point where you're like,
- 13:59oh, now this movie sucks.
- 14:01And it's when the twist happens.
- 14:02- Oh, okay.
- 14:03So the twist like purely ruins the movie.
- 14:07- It ruins the movie.
- 14:07- In your mind.
- 14:08- Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:09I do have my favorite twist in "Sing of God of History."
- 14:12- Which is?
- 14:13- The Mist.
- 14:14- Okay.
- 14:15- It's a movie based on a Stephen King novel.
- 14:17- Yeah.
- 14:18- Horror movie, this Mist attacks a town, the world,
- 14:22whatever and all these people are hiding in the grocery store.
- 14:25And if you go onto the Mist, you're surely gonna die
- 14:27'cause there's creatures in the Mist.
- 14:29Okay, big spoiler for the Mist.
- 14:31It came out so long ago.
- 14:333, 2, 1, here we go.
- 14:34They get in a car at the end.
- 14:36The main character in his surviving comrades or whatever.
- 14:40And the car runs out of gas.
- 14:42At this point, they're like, well, we're screwed.
- 14:44And we're not, we don't have any food.
- 14:46He has a gun with like four bullets in it.
- 14:49He shoots everyone in the car dead,
- 14:51including his own son.
- 14:53And he doesn't have enough bullets to kill himself.
- 14:54So he's just screaming in agony.
- 14:56- Yeah.
- 14:57- That what he had just done.
- 14:58That very moment, the Army rolls in.
- 15:00- The Army rolls in is like ready to save everyone.
- 15:04I'm relatching that and just being like,
- 15:06oh my God, you sit with that twist for so long
- 15:10and you're just like Jesus Christ,
- 15:11he has to live his whole life now,
- 15:13going through this best twist I've seen, I think.
- 15:16- Yeah.
- 15:17- So the last time I watched the mist, I was in Malibu.
- 15:21And we were staying at like this Airbnb.
- 15:26And it was a former like Backstreet Boy,
- 15:30like owner of the house.
- 15:31- Oh, okay.
- 15:32- So we're like really high in these Malibu mountains.
- 15:35And then you Malibu and then you also yes.
- 15:38- Okay.
- 15:39- And so we are up there.
- 15:41And there's a lot of mist in Malibu.
- 15:44And I was like, you know what we should do?
- 15:46- We should watch the mist.
- 15:48- I tell everyone.
- 15:49- And I was like, why would we do that?
- 15:52- Why would we do that?
- 15:52- I sat there by myself and watched the mist.
- 15:56- I wouldn't watch it with you.
- 15:57I love that movie.
- 15:59I'll watch that movie by myself.
- 16:00- Yeah.
- 16:01- My watch was by myself.
- 16:01- It was great.
- 16:02- It was great.
- 16:04- I remember watching Cabin in the woods
- 16:06in a Cabin in the woods with my friends
- 16:08'cause we were like, we should watch this movie.
- 16:10- Yeah.
- 16:11- Which is also a movie that has a pretty good twist.
- 16:13Now that I think of it.
- 16:14- It does have a great twist.
- 16:15- It does have a great movie with a great twist.
- 16:17- Yeah, that is a good movie.
- 16:19- I love to show Cabin in the woods to people who are like,
- 16:22oh, I hate horror.
- 16:23Or they don't have like a respect for horror movies.
- 16:26- It's actually Camp Horror.
- 16:28- Yeah, because it's funny.
- 16:30It really like, it knows what it's doing.
- 16:34And it's kind of subverting.
- 16:35- It's clever, it's fun.
- 16:37- Traditional tropes and turning them upside down
- 16:41and doing all those things.
- 16:42- And that's a good twist when it like,
- 16:44fucks with like what you expect a horror movie to be.
- 16:46It's like, we think that this Cabin in the woods
- 16:49is gonna be an evil dead situation with their zombies.
- 16:51And like, but no, it's,
- 16:53it's a government corporation.
- 16:55- Yeah, and then to you all from dying.
- 16:56- Exactly.
- 16:57And they're all running bets about if the mermaid man
- 17:00is gonna come this time.
- 17:01Like, I love that movie.
- 17:02- Yeah.
- 17:03I really, really like that.
- 17:05So pro tip, if you have someone in your life
- 17:08who you're a horror lover and they do not love it,
- 17:11like your significant other partner, get them to watch that.
- 17:15It's a really good entry way into,
- 17:19hey, some can be good.
- 17:21And like for me, I like ghosts.
- 17:25I like supernatural horror.
- 17:28- Me too.
- 17:29- I'm not a big rusem.
- 17:31Like, it's totally me.
- 17:32- With its torture porn.
- 17:34- Like, saw, saw one is as a little too much for me.
- 17:39But the twist at the end, it is great.
- 17:41- Incredible.
- 17:42- I do think that I've kept up with the story of saw.
- 17:46I don't really like to watch it because it's so gratuitous.
- 17:49- Me neither.
- 17:50I can't do that.
- 17:51- But I can't do that kind of horror because it's just like,
- 17:53it seems so over the top and then just like,
- 17:56new ways to watch bodies split apart.
- 17:58And I'm not about that.
- 17:59If it's exorcisms and ghosts and demons,
- 18:02oh yeah, let's go.
- 18:04But the first saw is a little more psychological
- 18:06than like the subsequent ones.
- 18:08Where there's actually like a mind fuck plot going on
- 18:12and the twist at the end.
- 18:14- That's great.
- 18:15- So I think it's called CK's world.
- 18:18He does like timeline breakdowns.
- 18:20He does like full horror story like timelines and breakdowns.
- 18:25So I watched his and it's the entire history of saw.
- 18:30- That sounds interesting.
- 18:32- So of like Jigsaw and how he became.
- 18:35So like, I didn't have to watch the gross parts of it.
- 18:38But the story behind it and like they do have some really good plot
- 18:43to us of like the people who ultimately go through
- 18:47this torture like join in.
- 18:49- Why were they chosen to be part of the game?
- 18:52- Yeah, and then as the saws go on,
- 18:55they start to join in and give people these choices.
- 18:59It has to contribute to that larger story
- 19:02and make sense for the character like,
- 19:04why are they doing this?
- 19:06Especially if it's gonna be like a film franchise.
- 19:09Like that brings me to another one of the greatest
- 19:11plot twists of all time.
- 19:12And Olivia and I had to confirm that this was a plot twist.
- 19:15So in Star Wars, the original trilogy
- 19:18when Luke finds out that Vader is his father to us,
- 19:22I was born in '89, you were what, '92.
- 19:24- '93.
- 19:25- '93, Jesus Christ.
- 19:26So we watched Star Wars when it would already been out
- 19:31for a long time for the first time.
- 19:33And so to me, I am your father was not a twist
- 19:37'cause I already, it was so in bed in culture.
- 19:39- Not culture, but I call my dad
- 19:41who went to the Star Wars movies and saw them in theater
- 19:44and said he stood in line for hours.
- 19:46And he said that everyone was shook
- 19:49when that line was dropped.
- 19:50No, I am your father, you know it to be true.
- 19:53He said it.
- 19:53- Audible gas.
- 19:54- Everyone was gasping and just shook.
- 19:56And I was like, that's a great plot twist.
- 19:59- Yeah.
- 19:59- And sometimes that's the unfortunate part
- 20:02of something being iconic and it can spoil it
- 20:06for other generation.
- 20:07- Yeah, like six cents was hell spoiled for me.
- 20:10- Yeah.
- 20:11- To this point, I still haven't seen that movie.
- 20:12I'll be honest, I've never seen it.
- 20:14- It's worth it.
- 20:15- I think it probably is.
- 20:16- It's worth it.
- 20:17- But I was so salty with my friend spoiled it for me.
- 20:20At my hair swimming at my house,
- 20:22in the fourth grade or something stupid.
- 20:24She's like, he said the craziest movie,
- 20:26Embry's Fools was Dead the Hold.
- 20:28- That's like the kid who wants to ruin Santa Claus for--
- 20:31- Oh my god.
- 20:32- Brother.
- 20:33- Yeah.
- 20:33Everyone's older brothers, older siblings.
- 20:36Like, yeah, well, Santa's not real
- 20:38and just really is your entire Christmas.
- 20:40- So my brother took it the other way
- 20:42and would give me coal and be like,
- 20:44see Santa hates you.
- 20:46- Santa thinks you're so bad.
- 20:48(laughing)
- 20:49- And then he was like, volunteer, I get soup kitchens
- 20:52in like the fourth grade.
- 20:53Just like, this is gonna be my year.
- 20:54- I mean, Santa's fight, like it'll like me.
- 20:56- If I'm gonna put it right,
- 20:58like he was, he had a better long term strategy
- 21:01to really add to the torment, you know.
- 21:04- That's a life twist.
- 21:06- Yeah.
- 21:06- When we all found out Santa's the tooth bunny,
- 21:08she's the tooth kidding.
- 21:09I'm kidding.
- 21:10- The tooth bunny.
- 21:11(laughing)
- 21:13- You didn't learn about the tooth bunny.
- 21:15You know what I'm saying?
- 21:16- Is that the movie teeth?
- 21:18- That's a great movie.
- 21:19That's a great movie.
- 21:20- Yeah.
- 21:21- That is a good one.
- 21:22- Oh man, we're gonna talk about feminist film
- 21:24in some future episode.
- 21:26- Yeah.
- 21:27We talked about it and good for her.
- 21:29- That's true.
- 21:30- That's true.
- 21:31- And get to tired trope now.
- 21:34Like we mentioned the sixth sense.
- 21:37- The dead.
- 21:38- The whole time trope.
- 21:39- Yeah, the dead, the entire time.
- 21:41- I'm not sure if I'm trying to.
- 21:42- I'm not sure if I'm trying to.
- 21:43- It was all a dream.
- 21:46- Yeah.
- 21:46- We hallucinated this whole thing.
- 21:49Like even in Twilight when they have that whole segment
- 21:52in the final movie, where like everyone dies.
- 21:55And they're not like, oh no, this was just Alice's vision.
- 21:58- Yeah.
- 21:58- Like, I mean, it's an interesting segment,
- 22:00but like, I don't know, it was all a dream
- 22:02and they were dead the whole time.
- 22:02- Yeah.
- 22:03- It's kind of like that.
- 22:04- I hate that it was all a dream.
- 22:05One movie that I do really like with that,
- 22:07they were dead the whole time though, is The Others.
- 22:11- I've seen The Others.
- 22:13- Okay, well I'm not gonna spoil it then.
- 22:15- Oh my god, yeah, don't spoil it.
- 22:16If it's for me, we can't spoil it.
- 22:17We can spoil it, we can spoil it.
- 22:18- We can spoil it, we can spoil it.
- 22:19- We can spoil it, we can spoil it.
- 22:20- Yeah, yeah.
- 22:21- For each other.
- 22:22- No, it's good.
- 22:22- But it's gotta go to it.
- 22:23- It's a couple of Kidmin, right?
- 22:24- The commercials for that, I remember being young and there's like,
- 22:29this little girl under this like lace like tablecloth
- 22:33and she's like seeing a little creepy lullaby.
- 22:37- Nope.
- 22:37- And it to this day sticks with me.
- 22:39- Nope.
- 22:40- And the twist in the end is very, very good.
- 22:43- Don't tell me.
- 22:44- And so, I'm gonna watch that.
- 22:45That's gonna be my Thursday movie.
- 22:47When I always watch movies by myself on Thursday nights,
- 22:49that'll be mine this week.
- 22:49- Yeah.
- 22:50- Yeah, it reminds me.
- 22:52It's coral but still.
- 22:54- I've sure I've told this story before.
- 22:56I was out walking Buffy and taking her to go pee.
- 22:58It was like starting to storm and like,
- 23:00"We're in a little bit and it's getting kind of windy and dark."
- 23:02And I see this little kid standing in the distance,
- 23:04like in my apartment complex grass.
- 23:07And he's just standing there like a creepy fucking horror movie kid.
- 23:10- And looks at me and goes,
- 23:12"You're going to die tonight."
- 23:13- No.
- 23:15Did I? I've never told you that.
- 23:17Oh my god, I'm just, my...
- 23:19Okay.
- 23:20(laughing)
- 23:24And Andrew's like, "Are you okay?"
- 23:25I was like, "Ahhh."
- 23:28- Can we like make sure all the children are all.
- 23:30- Little kids, like that little kid horror for tonight.
- 23:33- No, little kid horror for tonight.
- 23:35Like the orphan is a really good twist as well.
- 23:38- I've never seen a movie that I just know
- 23:39the twist through pop culture.
- 23:41- Yeah, the orphan has a great twist.
- 23:43But yeah.
- 23:44- And I think it was like a little kid like Damien.
- 23:47- It's open year day.
- 23:48- Yeah, you know, like I always think those are like
- 23:52the iconic ones that are like really old people.
- 23:56- Yeah.
- 23:57- Yeah.
- 23:58- No, I mean, I, okay, I'm gonna put orphan on my list too.
- 24:01The second orphan is very good as well.
- 24:04- I'm just a orphan too.
- 24:05- Orphan two has a great plot twist as well.
- 24:08- Another twist.
- 24:09- Yeah.
- 24:10- Shit, a twist within a twist.
- 24:11- A twist within a twist.
- 24:12- A twist?
- 24:13- Which I guess we can't talk about the plot twist
- 24:16of a movie without mentioning inception.
- 24:19- Oh my gosh, inception is so good with such a good twist.
- 24:22- Yeah, I totally forgot about inception.
- 24:24- Yeah, like a twist within a twist within a twist.
- 24:27- Yes, I love that.
- 24:28- And while when you would explain kind of the levels
- 24:33in the way of it, I think he did a great job on it
- 24:36where it just like created like almost like a tornado
- 24:41of how do you know what exists.
- 24:43- Exactly.
- 24:44- And like you still don't even know
- 24:45what the top of the end.
- 24:46- Yeah, I love those movies too.
- 24:48Where the person that you see them with,
- 24:49you go get like a drink or cup of coffee right after the movie
- 24:51and you both just sit there and like talk about it
- 24:54and discuss it and you're like, wait a minute, wait a minute.
- 24:57Did this mean this and the other person's like,
- 24:59no, didn't you notice this?
- 25:00Like I love those kinds of movies.
- 25:02- Yeah.
- 25:03- I'm just breaking it all down.
- 25:04That reminded me of another great twist that I liked,
- 25:07which is it did fall into their dead the whole time trope,
- 25:10but gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
- 25:15- I've seen it.
- 25:17- Such a good movie.
- 25:19(laughing)
- 25:21For the show you cannot hear our producer,
- 25:23she said there's a twist.
- 25:24- There's a twist in that movie.
- 25:25Okay, so gravity, they're in space like Sandra Bullock
- 25:29and George Clooney are these two astronauts
- 25:31and Sandra Bullock is, do you mind if I spoil this?
- 25:33- Yeah.
- 25:34- So you're good.
- 25:36- I think I actually have seen this.
- 25:38Now that you're saying this face part.
- 25:39- I'm out to fix something on the ship
- 25:41and the cord becomes attached to something
- 25:43and she's essentially floating through space, right?
- 25:46- Yes, or do I know?
- 25:47- Or do I know?
- 25:48- And George Clooney's dead the whole time.
- 25:50She's just hallucinating talking to him.
- 25:52- Oh wow.
- 25:54- I wish I could apparently have producer wasn't she?
- 25:57(laughing)
- 25:59- That sounds like a very distant memory to me,
- 26:02but maybe you were, I did tell you earlier
- 26:05that when people say, oh, I wish I could reread
- 26:09that book again or like,
- 26:11re-remember this piece of media.
- 26:12I'm like, give it a couple of years and I will forget.
- 26:15- It's all gone.
- 26:16- It's just gone.
- 26:17- It's gonna be gone.
- 26:18I'm like, I don't know.
- 26:19- Oh my God.
- 26:20That also reminds me of like movies with good twists
- 26:23that are based on books.
- 26:24So I mentioned earlier that one of my old friends
- 26:27from high school spoiled for everyone
- 26:29that Snape killed Dumbledore at the movie premiere for it.
- 26:33- And I guess half blood friends.
- 26:34Is that the one that killed Dumbledore?
- 26:36And everyone who was in the line who had read the book
- 26:37was like, what a dick, we all know that.
- 26:39But like people, there's people who definitely write
- 26:42all the books who used to like the movies
- 26:44and they're just like, what the fuck?
- 26:46Like they're a real slither in that group of them.
- 26:49- I'm a slither in.
- 26:50- Well, excuse you.
- 26:52We're not all that.
- 26:54(laughing)
- 26:55- They fuck jacket rolling.
- 26:56- Yeah.
- 26:57- I'm a slither.
- 26:58- Yeah.
- 26:59- But that was a great twist, I think.
- 27:00And then you have to wait for the next book to come out
- 27:03to find out, okay, is Snape good or Snape bad?
- 27:05I remember they were like selling merch and you could choose.
- 27:08Like one was like, Snape is a good guy
- 27:10and then it was like, Snape is a bad guy
- 27:11and you had to wait to find out.
- 27:13But yeah, good book twist.
- 27:15You wanna know what the real worst twist of them all is?
- 27:17- I sure do.
- 27:18- JK Rowling becoming a turd.
- 27:20- I'm becoming a turd.
- 27:21- God, watch it twist.
- 27:23(laughing)
- 27:24- Yeah, she could've had it all but she blew it, man.
- 27:27- She fucking blew it.
- 27:28- Yeah.
- 27:29- There's also another twist.
- 27:31- Hmm.
- 27:31(laughing)
- 27:33- I'm actually Nicole.
- 27:34(laughing)
- 27:36- Hey.
- 27:37- Is that you're Nicole impression?
- 27:39- Hey.
- 27:40- You're scuby dude being the center.
- 27:42- I'm scuby dude.
- 27:43- What a guy.
- 27:43- You legally blonde being the scuby dude being.
- 27:46(laughing)
- 27:47- Man.
- 27:49- What a twist.
- 27:50- If you don't remember.
- 27:51- We love you Nicole, we miss you.
- 27:52- Yeah, we do.
- 27:53If you don't remember the legally blonde,
- 27:55is you told me to show up in a costume
- 27:59and I was came in a costume.
- 28:00- Okay, she the fair.
- 28:02I never said come in a costume.
- 28:03I said and I quote,
- 28:05where your best spooky swimwear.
- 28:06- The next swimwear.
- 28:07- The next swimwear.
- 28:08- The next swimwear.
- 28:08- The next swimwear.
- 28:09- It was a Halloween swim party.
- 28:11- I loved your costume and this Halloween,
- 28:13we're gonna have great costumes.
- 28:15- Yes.
- 28:16- No matter what they are.
- 28:16- I agree.
- 28:17(laughing)
- 28:20- The real twist is the memories we made along the way.
- 28:22(dramatic music)
- 28:25- While we could talk on and on about our favorite plot twist,
- 28:31I do wanna get into a little bit of some current pop culture.
- 28:36So what have you been obsessed with this week?
- 28:39- I wanna talk about a movie that I watched very recently
- 28:43that I really liked.
- 28:44- Okay.
- 28:45- It's called The Green Night.
- 28:46It came out in 2021.
- 28:48It stars Dev Patel.
- 28:50- Mm.
- 28:51- Bubba.
- 28:51- Who I love.
- 28:52- What a good-looking man.
- 28:53- He really is.
- 28:54- My great actor.
- 28:55It's a A24 pic so you know it's gonna be amazing.
- 28:58- I mean, it's a media-like gonna be good.
- 29:01- But it's really like,
- 29:03it's got that A24 art style where it's kind of like
- 29:07ominous and dark, but it's not a horror movie.
- 29:10It's very suspenseful, but it's based on an English folklore
- 29:15where it's medieval nights and Dev's character,
- 29:19Sir Goen wants to be a knight, but he's not very knightly.
- 29:23He spends most of his time having sex with his kind of
- 29:27brothel-employed lover.
- 29:30- So he drinks a lot.
- 29:32- Dancer dragons, why am I saying?
- 29:34- Yeah, but he doesn't seem like a crispy call.
- 29:37- He's a little crispy call.
- 29:38- He doesn't seem like a bad guy.
- 29:39He's just kind of like, yeah, I wish I was a knight,
- 29:41but at the same time, I like drinking and smoking
- 29:43and I'm drinking and I like it.
- 29:45- Yeah.
- 29:46- And then one year, Christmas,
- 29:48he is also the King's nephew.
- 29:50This knight comes in.
- 29:51The Green Night, who seems to kind of be like
- 29:54made of trees and leaves.
- 29:56He's one with nature and offers up a game to everybody there.
- 30:01And if anyone is brave enough to face him,
- 30:05they will get honor and riches.
- 30:06I will not spoil it.
- 30:08And of course, Sir Goen is like, I'll do it.
- 30:11Yeah, 'cause he wants to kind of show off how cool he is
- 30:14and brave he is.
- 30:15That's setting forth a wonderful movie with just like
- 30:19action and twists, honestly.
- 30:23- And a two-wheels.
- 30:24- There's twists throughout this movie
- 30:25that I was shook a couple times.
- 30:27And I remember saying out loud at one point, no.
- 30:29- Oh, yeah.
- 30:30- And I was like, okay.
- 30:31All right.
- 30:32So I'm absolutely gonna pop the Green Night.
- 30:35- Okay.
- 30:36- 2021.
- 30:37I don't remember where we streamed it.
- 30:38I think we had to pay like $3.99 a rip.
- 30:40- Okay.
- 30:41- But it was great.
- 30:42- Okay.
- 30:43- I'm compelled.
- 30:43I will check it out.
- 30:45- Absolutely.
- 30:46- I love it.
- 30:47- I watched it 24 good.
- 30:47- And Deft Betel is so, he's such a good character
- 30:50because he messes up over and over again
- 30:53throughout the movie where it's like all these opportunities
- 30:55to do the right thing, keep popping up.
- 30:57- Yeah.
- 30:58- And he's like not doing it.
- 30:59- Do you want to say that?
- 31:00- And you're like, oh, come on, come on.
- 31:02But it's a great movie.
- 31:03- What about you, Liv?
- 31:04- Well, I have essentially an unspoilable show to recommend
- 31:10because it is based on Greek mythology.
- 31:14- Okay.
- 31:15- So we already know what's gonna happen.
- 31:16- So we already know what's gonna happen.
- 31:17- Everything that's going to happen.
- 31:18But it just came out on Netflix, actually.
- 31:21- Oh, I don't care.
- 31:21- It's called K-Ox.
- 31:22- Yes.
- 31:23- So it has a Jeff Goldblum as a Zeus,
- 31:28Janet McTier as Hera, Stefan Delaene as Prometheus,
- 31:33and just a whole host of different characters.
- 31:37It is so funny.
- 31:39It's so good.
- 31:40I love Jeff Goldblum.
- 31:42I think he's only getting hotter as he ages.
- 31:45- Oh, what the hell is he?
- 31:47- He's just like a man from Jurassic Park to, you know,
- 31:52today, he can find a way in me.
- 31:54- But he plays such a good job of like the,
- 31:58his casusean Greek mythology is known as like this,
- 32:01like arrogant, like power under ladies man.
- 32:04- And this whole, yeah, who just like demands respect
- 32:08and is like quite petty.
- 32:09And I think he plays like gives the character
- 32:12like a lot of playfulness where you can still kind of like him,
- 32:16but you know, he's gonna ask whole.
- 32:18And you know, it's just kind of like a hatching lent child,
- 32:21ultimately, but it's so good.
- 32:24I binge it all yesterday.
- 32:26- And that's to give it a lot.
- 32:27- I have 30 minutes left in the ending of it,
- 32:29but it's really good.
- 32:30And as you know, by us discussing all the books we read,
- 32:34we do love a mythology in this house.
- 32:37- Oh, absolutely.
- 32:38- Of course, we're gonna have to pop that one,
- 32:40but very, very good.
- 32:41- I'm gonna get it a while.
- 32:42- I've been saying a lot of good things about it.
- 32:44It's chaos with a K, right?
- 32:45- Yeah, chaos with a K.
- 32:47- Love that.
- 32:48I'm gonna give it a try.

- 32:53and stuff to our reading.
- 32:55- To our reading fans.

- 32:59- Yeah.

- 33:03- Yes, I'm Cheryl Finish, it was in the end five months.
- 33:06- No, dude, I got through fourth wing
- 33:08and like really fast, like a week or two.
- 33:11So I'm gonna speed through it.
- 33:13- Yeah, I just gotta talk shit to you.
- 33:15So that way you'll like read it faster.
- 33:17- Then I'll be guilty.
- 33:18- Yes, mommy.
- 33:18- Yeah, it's like, you know, when your coach is like really mean to you.
- 33:22- Yeah.
- 33:23- But it makes you work harder in spite of it.
- 33:25- It reminds me of the bear, like,
- 33:27- Yeah.
- 33:27- Carly's guy who's like, kill yourself
- 33:30and he's like, "Yes, chef, God!"
