- 0:00Speaker 1: The Cowboy's Christmas Ball way out in Western Texas, where
- 0:06Speaker 1: the clear Fork's waters flow, where the cattle are a
- 0:10Speaker 1: browsin and the Spanish ponies grow, Where the northers come
- 0:15Speaker 1: a whistling from beyond the neutral strip, and the prairie
- 0:20Speaker 1: dogs are sneezing as if they had the grip, Where
- 0:25Speaker 1: the coyotes come a howlin round the ranches after dark,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and the mocking birds are singing to the lovely meader lark,
- 0:35Speaker 1: where the possum and the badger and rattlesnakes abound, and
- 0:40Speaker 1: the monstrous stars are winkin. O'er a wilderness profound, where
- 0:46Speaker 1: lonesome tawny prairies melt into airy streams, while the double
- 0:52Speaker 1: mountains slumber in heavenly kinds of dreams, where the antelope
- 0:58Speaker 1: is grazin and the lonely plover's call. It was there
- 1:03Speaker 1: that I attended the Cowboy's Christmas Ball. The town was
- 1:08Speaker 1: Anson City, Old Jones's county seat, where they raise polled
- 1:14Speaker 1: angus cattle and waving whiskered wheat, where the air is
- 1:19Speaker 1: soft and bammy and dry and full of health, and
- 1:23Speaker 1: the prairies is exploding with agricultural wealth. Where they print
- 1:29Speaker 1: the Texas Western that Heck MacCann supplies with news and
- 1:34Speaker 1: yarns and stories of most amazing size, where Frank Smith
- 1:40Speaker 1: pulls the badger on knowin tender feet the land and
- 1:45Speaker 1: Democracy's triumphant and mighty hard to beat. Where lives that
- 1:50Speaker 1: good old hunter John Millsap from Lamar, who used to
- 1:55Speaker 1: be the sheriff back east in Paris? Suh? Who was there?
- 2:00Speaker 1: I say, at Anson with the lively witter wall shields
- 2:05Speaker 1: that I went to that reception the cowboy's Christmas Ball.
- 2:11Speaker 1: The boys had left the ranches and come to town
- 2:14Speaker 1: in piles. The ladies kinder scattering, had gathered in for miles,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and yet the place was crowded. As I remember well,
- 2:25Speaker 1: bing tea was got for the occasion at the morning
- 2:28Speaker 1: Star Hotel. The music was a fiddle and a lively
- 2:33Speaker 1: tambourine and a viol come imported by the stage from Abilene.
- 2:40Speaker 1: The room was togged out gorgeous, and candles flickered frescoes
- 2:45Speaker 1: around the airy walls. The women folks looked lovely, the
- 2:50Speaker 1: boys looked kinder treed till their leader commenced yellin' whoa fellers,
- 2:57Speaker 1: Let's stampede, and the music started syin and a wailin
- 3:02Speaker 1: through the hall as a kind of introduction to the

- 3:11Speaker 1: from Swenson's ranch. They called him Windy Billy from Little
- 3:16Speaker 1: dead Man's Branch. His rig was kinder, careless, big spurs
- 3:22Speaker 1: and high heeled boots. He had the reputation that comes
- 3:26Speaker 1: when fellers shoots. His voice was like a bugle upon
- 3:31Speaker 1: the mountain's height. His feet were animated and a mighty
- 3:36Speaker 1: move in sight disabled when he commenced to holler, n now, fellers,
- 3:42Speaker 1: stake your pen and russellem like men, salute your lovely critters.
