- 0:01Welcome to the. Be forever fast.
- 0:06Podcast with my main guy here. Main man here, TJ from two
- 0:12wheels and coffee what's going on man?
- 0:20Winter is a is winter is here. Not coming to see.
- 0:24I guess the, it's not official until the 21st or something like
- 0:27that. Right.
- 0:28Yeah. So I guess we got some I guess
- 0:30we got some time but she leave already.
- 0:32Yeah. Yeah.
- 0:33And in Boston is definitely a very cold cold morning today for
- 0:39me anyway and I guess for t.j. to But this episode we're going
- 0:44to talk about, you know, track getting to the track and and and
- 0:52how all that works. For those who have have not gone
- 0:55to the track for folks that have gone to the track.
- 0:58You already know how it works. So you know it is what it is and
- 1:03you think it is more than you think, you know it's You know, I
- 1:11guess what, you know, once you decide you want to go to the
- 1:14track, right? Because you already have your
- 1:15motorcycle license you already ride and maybe you haven't
- 1:19ridden at all you just want to do track days because there's a
- 1:21lot of folks that only do track riding and and don't write on
- 1:26the streets at all. So it all depends on which can't
- 1:29be coming from. But at this point, you've
- 1:31decided, yeah I'm going to get into the go to a track and see
- 1:35what happens. All I know is if you do decide
- 1:39to go to the track, best thing is always have a helping hand.
- 1:43We first time, you don't want to drop your bike and there's a lot
- 1:49of equipment involved so you want to burn all your energy
- 1:53transport into my from so it's good to always have someone to
- 1:56help you. Yeah.
- 1:57Always to help you while you on the track as well.
- 2:00Yes it is always nice if you can get there if you can get that
- 2:06and It wil Get to that towards the end of the shoulder.
- 2:08Just get into the track part, but, you know, so we've decided
- 2:12that, you know, yeah, I'm gonna go to the track and and so now
- 2:16you have to go get gear. And you know what kind of guy do
- 2:21you get, right? You know, a lot of people pick
- 2:24and choose what brand they like, you know, a lot of people like
- 2:28name brands, right? And and the thing is even before
- 2:31the name-brand part, you know, depending on where you going to
- 2:35go. So I think First thing you have
- 2:37to do, one of the first things you have to do is figure out
- 2:41which track you want to go to. So depends on where you live how
- 2:44far you live if you look you know you can just Google.
- 2:48You did the track closest to you and then find a school or Club.
- 2:54That's, you know, doing track days and I'll, you know, you
- 2:59know, you know, upfront, you know, I've only done maybe three
- 3:03track days in my 12 years of riding and I started out Tracing
- 3:08and haven't done a track day, but I did attract a in 2019 for
- 3:12the first time and I was racing since 2013, you know, we commute
- 3:17about over an hour almost two hours.
- 3:19So you know, The tracks not going to be too close to you so,
- 3:24you know, just gonna be ready to commute to write a lot of people
- 3:27come from all over, but there's there's track days close by to
- 3:32that you can look up through Facebook to find or even Google.
- 3:35Correct. You know how we?
- 3:36Yeah, I think we can name a couple like and to and Tony's
- 3:41track day up in the well they they kind of go everywhere.
- 3:45There's some writing clubs that, you know, riding school like
- 3:50penguin that that offers You know, track days along with the
- 3:54schools and there's other clubs that offer track days along with
- 3:58their schools. If you want to give you want to
- 3:59go that route. So, figured that out, once you
- 4:01figure it out, look at the rule books or the rules of what they
- 4:05allow on the track because that's going to tell you what
- 4:08you need to buy, because some places a lot will allow, you
- 4:11know, to peace. Let this have, you know, in
- 4:15generally always Leathers I think I've seen a couple where
- 4:18it wasn't in some track days. Or, you know, I've seen photos,
- 4:24you know? Because I haven't done a lot of
- 4:25track days but generally I'm going to just look and see what
- 4:29they allow because that's going to be the easiest thing, you
- 4:31know, age of the helmet. What kind of gloves or kind of
- 4:34boots, what kind of suit, right. There's some, a most important
- 4:38thing is the age of the helmet. You don't want to go with the
- 4:41old helmet found in your basement five years ago, if
- 4:44someone had an old helmet. Just so you get on the track has
- 4:47to be up to date correct within five years of the Next year to
- 4:53that it was it was released released, right?
- 4:55And that's more for race. And I think there's a little bit
- 4:58lakhs on just the track day, but just keep in mind, helmets are
- 5:02designed in such a way to disperse impact and they
- 5:06generally work once, right? And after that, you have to get
- 5:09a new helmet. So, if you have a hard crash,
- 5:11sure, your helmet might looks, we might not have any scratches
- 5:14on it, but if you banged It On The Ground, chances are, you
- 5:16know, the next time, it's not going to work, which means
- 5:19you're going to feel more of that impact.
- 5:22So you don't want to go out with a damaged helmet, old helmet.
- 5:26You know you when you when you're when you're, it's your
- 5:28life. Yeah, gloves and boots that
- 5:31stuff, you know, can last a little longer correct helmet has
- 5:35to be at least up to date, right?
- 5:37And so yeah, so once you know the the okay, I'm going to
- 5:42Tony's track day and this is the rules.
- 5:44So, okay, I'm gonna go get me a suit, I got my boots, I got to
- 5:47get, you know, some some gloves and a helmet.
- 5:52I know there are a lot of shops that, you know, the local that
- 5:57you can go in and get fitted this little cycle gas around.
- 6:02We only have one where we yeah there's one of mass and that the
- 6:06next one is Rhode Island but there's other there's local bike
- 6:09play with local bike shops. If they sell suits.
- 6:12They'll tell you can go get fitted and and I think that's
- 6:15the best way to go to get get instead of just going online and
- 6:19purchase in a suit. Go get fitted because you know,
- 6:22Oh, suits the design differently, cat different cuts
- 6:24on them and stuff like that. Same thing with the helmets, you
- 6:27know, I'd love a AVG helmet, that's one of my favorite
- 6:31Brands, but my head doesn't doesn't work right for the shape
- 6:35of my head. So depending on the type of
- 6:37helmet, you know, you what you like and what you get may be
- 6:39different because I would love one as well and if I got it it
- 6:43was just, you know, sit on a wall or because I can't write
- 6:45can't ride with it. It's like it's not going to be
- 6:47comfortable. So I got a Alpine Star Race
- 6:51suit. I didn't go in the store and get
- 6:53fitted and I actually looked up online and everything and see
- 6:57you in my size was right. And you know, they should suit
- 7:01to me. I got to know and when I say
- 7:03that it was race fit, it was race fit, got you.
- 7:05It was a little bit too tight for me, okay.
- 7:08So I actually had to ship it back.
- 7:09Right, right. Right.
- 7:10They sent me a sighs. Hi, one size higher, and it
- 7:13actually fit pretty right good and, and that's what you're
- 7:16saying. Go get fitted.
- 7:17Yeah, that's that's what you save do you say, you know,
- 7:20buying the wrong suit Especially and and then once you know, your
- 7:23size, it's real easy, and every suit varies to, you know, like
- 7:28on the numbers, exactly the hardest part.
- 7:30Exactly. You know, you got the European
- 7:32suits, Dainese with the European numbers, and them and and, and I
- 7:36think Alpine Star also does that as well, you know?
- 7:42Yeah. You know, there's other brands,
- 7:43like, grab it and stuff like that.
- 7:44So, you know, I think, you know, II use, you know, I have
- 7:50dionysia spacesuits and That's what I prefer.
- 7:52Although next season, I'm going with a different brand, but it's
- 7:58going to be custom. But for the most part in, you
- 8:00know, I've tried Alpine Star and I do like the fitted, the that
- 8:03suit as well. And I kind of leaned towards
- 8:07Alpine Star and and, and, and Dainese because they have the
- 8:11airbags and but, you know, Alpine Star have more Universal
- 8:16suits. Well, the airbag for for Alpine
- 8:20style, you can use another And which is kind of cool.
- 8:23So you know that that's a plus. And I say these Brands because
- 8:27you know, the new Rider I think at this point it doesn't matter.
- 8:30New or not, you know it makes sense to race or ride on a track
- 8:35with a suit that has air bag in it.
- 8:37Oh yeah and you know if you don't have one it's okay you
- 8:41know you just need a chest protector in the back, whatever.
- 8:43They also have airbag vest that you can you know, purchase brand
- 8:49new or its people seldom used the with the headlight and we'll
- 8:55just the other airbag best friend, you know, I will have to
- 9:00look that up. Yeah, exactly exactly.
- 9:06But there were few of them out there.
- 9:07So there you have options where the over the destroy a suit or
- 9:11underneath the race suit, you know, sums that are Tethered to
- 9:14the bike and others that you know, you know, with the GPS in
- 9:18the suit that you got to charge and stuff like that So yeah.
- 9:22So it you know when you just when you find a shop to go to go
- 9:28get fitted and you know your size and you have that all
- 9:31figured out and you have a cost of of how much you're going to,
- 9:34you're going to spend, you know. And you know, I think on
- 9:38average, I think you're going to spend about 1,000 to 1,500 bucks
- 9:43between a suit gloves and helmet.
- 9:46And, and that's, you know, buying a suit that's around, 800
- 9:48bucks. Any boot, you know, and, and
- 9:50yeah, any boot. It's actually I was let's say
- 9:53around 1800 to Grant. You know what I mean?
- 9:57He's like, I can't just buy a regular gloves as for the
- 10:00street, you need Gauntlet gloves.
- 10:03So you know they're larger ones and you should go get fitted for
- 10:09those as well because there's someone to that the ones I
- 10:13purchased the first time they were like winter to style for.
- 10:17I know. But they were track gloves but
- 10:20they were really Tough D like grip and squeeze.
- 10:23You know it wasn't like the gauntlet gloves I have now and
- 10:27then you need some boots as well.
- 10:30Right. They were running about 250.
- 10:33Yeah, exactly. To, you know, 500 bucks, 600
- 10:37bucks depending on what you're going to get or want.
- 10:40Now I will say you can, you know, it's good to check out
- 10:44forms because a lot of people sell use equipment and and stuff
- 10:48like that because some people go out on the track and then You
- 10:51know, it's not for them and then they have stuff that they've
- 10:54born once or twice and and or life change, it happens or
- 10:57whatever, you know, they just do whatever their reasoning that
- 11:00they decide to sell these things.
- 11:01So you could get lucky and get some deals on boots and a suit
- 11:07and that type of thing and that type of thing is okay to buy.
- 11:09Because, you know, you were a base layer underneath your suit.
- 11:12So, you know, I mean some, you know, I don't know how to many
- 11:15people that just go in it and their skin with the suit.
- 11:18Everybody usually have a base layer because just once you
- 11:20start sweating, it's just Easy to get in and out of the suit,
- 11:22then to have your skin against the leather.
- 11:26You know what I mean? So you can always check that
- 11:28out. You know, somebody's bike,
- 11:29places like RevZilla, Psycho Gear, they'll have sales and
- 11:33stuff like that on left over. Yeah, on leftover equipment and
- 11:38stuff and stuff like that. And you know you just gotta get
- 11:41out there too. So you don't need matching gear
- 11:44and trying to look pretty and know is, you know, you just need
- 11:48the equipment to get your feet wet and When I first went to
- 11:52actually watch and I had no equipment and you know, I
- 12:00purchased little pieces here and there to get myself ready for
- 12:04the next next year and and I made it happen but I don't have
- 12:08all the best care. You know.
- 12:10Right made it manageable and you know yeah I think I think that
- 12:15happens over time. He first time is just Justice.
- 12:17Really. Just trying to get out there and
- 12:20just a learning experience so you're not I have all the
- 12:22information. You're not going to purchase all
- 12:24the right stuff for do all the right things.
- 12:26That's you know, the cool thing, though, people help you, when
- 12:30you're there and it will point out the things that that will,
- 12:33you know, save you some time and effort, or money or skill or
- 12:38whatever. So, you know, you gotta admit
- 12:40that prices intimidating, like, I gotta start, hey, what ya know
- 12:46is you have a bike? Yeah, you don't have a bike yet,
- 12:48you're paying, you know, to Grand 2500 just to just to Get
- 12:51in there it isn't. It is a very expensive sport
- 12:56that period. It's a very expensive Sport and
- 13:00you know, it's not for everyone and even the people that want to
- 13:03do it, you they don't you run out of money.
- 13:05You're not going to you just you just going to stop doing it
- 13:07because it's very expensive. But it does, it does.
- 13:10I think it always Street Experience unless you like doing
- 13:15traveling pretty far, like up mountains and stuff like that.
- 13:18You know, right quick rise here and they're fun but Their
- 13:22experience on the track if you just do it in one time, you
- 13:24know? I think it's worth it, right?
- 13:27And then if you have the gear for it, you can also wear it on
- 13:30the street to self-correct. Exactly.
- 13:33I think so. So you know that's the part.
- 13:36So once you have invested your two grand and it will 2500, we
- 13:40got a deal online or got leftover suits or whatever the
- 13:44case may be. You know, you got your suit.
- 13:46I got to figure out if you have the bankroll to buy a bike, Then
- 13:52you know, you look at that route and like I said, I've always, I
- 13:55recommend buying a built race bike.
- 13:59That's somebody's build, you know, and it's worth maybe pay
- 14:02me, you know, do some research on whatever bike it is so it's
- 14:06just a guess about that, you know.
- 14:08So safe I have my six hundred and it's not built and I bring
- 14:13it to the track and then verse built bike, right?
- 14:17Well, you just the difference because you know, there is a
- 14:20difference. You, you cannot race with a
- 14:22street bike. You can do a track day with a
- 14:24street bike and and which there's no competition and you
- 14:29just get time on the track in a group and stuff like that.
- 14:31Yeah, they'll tape up your lights and, you know, a couple
- 14:35of extra things, little white rice necessary, but the track
- 14:39bike is totally different setup, right?
- 14:41Track bike is a different, totally different setup, for
- 14:44sure. And so, you know, like I say,
- 14:48it's if you have the funds to buy a bike by a bike, if you are
- 14:53experienced writer, you know, I always say, start out on a small
- 14:57bike to learn how to ride, right?
- 14:59To learn how to race, it will go to track days, you know, a ninja
- 15:02400, Katie m390, you know, that type of thing, if you're going
- 15:06to raise or even do a track Day on, Especially if you're a new
- 15:10Rider because there's a lot of body position and break-in and
- 15:14lines and stuff like that that you have to learn and it's just
- 15:17better. I started out on a sv650.
- 15:20That's that's a fairly good bike, but in hindsight, I wish I
- 15:24would have started out on the 400 and actually erase a KTM 390
- 15:27now, because and I was racing a 600, you know, and so now I'm in
- 15:32the last year or so I'm racing a small bike to accept,
- 15:36essentially fix all the things, you know.
- 15:39No, that's hamper me from being faster, on on, on our six.
- 15:45So I, you know, so if you if you if you find a small bike that's
- 15:50the way to go. But if you want to start out on
- 15:51a 600, some people do some people start out.
- 15:54I want thousands. I wouldn't recommend it.
- 15:56I wouldn't recommend to 600 either but some people do it so
- 16:01if you can buy a bike great if not you can rent one, right?
- 16:05Oh yeah. Say that the friends I have this
- 16:08started out one. 1,000. We're still trying to get them
- 16:11to the track, you know, they didn't feel too comfortable,
- 16:15right? Because it's yellow.
- 16:18Oh, actually, I started out on the 400 actually went to the
- 16:20penguin track school, right? So, and that makes, and that
- 16:24made all the world difference because you couldn't, you can,
- 16:27you don't have to worry about the power of the bike, you can
- 16:31kind of, you just focus on your body positions, you know, you're
- 16:35lying, you're breaking and and and, and And get that all out on
- 16:40the control. Because honestly, your first
- 16:42time out on the track for me, you know, my first time out on
- 16:46the track was, I was like, what am I doing out here?
- 16:50Looking around, like, it, over my shoulder, like, everyone's
- 16:53gonna cut me off and so it's a little intimidating at first and
- 16:58you don't want to have to be able to control the power of
- 17:011000 or 600, you know, it's different than on the streets.
- 17:06It's easy to go on the street at as You know, top or whatever
- 17:10gear you want to be at and honest in a straight line.
- 17:14And there's one thing you're not going to be the fastest out on
- 17:16the track even though you think he had the fastest out of your
- 17:19group on the street? Yeah, there's 14 15 year-old is
- 17:22that's fascinating, all of us that see it, you know, order,
- 17:26you know, older. Yeah.
- 17:27And they're on smaller bikes. You know, you just got to go out
- 17:29there, you're going to be in the going to be in a categorized
- 17:32group. So you're not going to be out
- 17:34there with experts, when your brand new exactly you know
- 17:37they'll make sure you take care of, you know, there's A lot of
- 17:39support Corner Marshalls every corner.
- 17:43You know, it's medical staff there and everything.
- 17:46So great. You know?
- 17:49And that's the thing. It is very safe, you know,
- 17:52there's definitely Corner workers and and I like itj
- 17:56saying the medical staff and stuff like that.
- 17:58So you know, get your bike, you know, figure out you got to
- 18:02figure out how you going to transport your bike.
- 18:04You got to have a gas container for gas because most attracts
- 18:08don't have a gas pump. Most actually have a gas pump.
- 18:12You still need a gas container to, you know, have gas readily
- 18:16available. All right.
- 18:18The gas pump in it's not like a gas station so exactly.
- 18:22If they don't have it, you got to have.
- 18:23Yeah, it means that you're going to need straps for your bike.
- 18:26If you don't attract day, you don't need to Iowa.
- 18:28Well, if you're running a street bike you don't need to I warmers
- 18:31if you are running a race bike which race tires, you got any
- 18:36taiwan's to heat the bike up? You'll need, you know, Jack you
- 18:39want to stands for the bike to take the bike off the ground so
- 18:42that I won't miss. Can be on you know the track
- 18:45might need a generator. Yeah, depend on track.
- 18:47You might need a Narrator. Fortunately we don't have to
- 18:51bring one right we're at. But right we're very fortunate
- 18:54for that in in New Hampshire but there's a lot of tracks that you
- 18:58needed to do, you know, the outlets a limited and is first
- 19:00come first serve or first Reserve?
- 19:03So, you know what I mean? So you got to plan ahead.
- 19:05If you can get a generator, a lot of people tend to jump with
- 19:08the 1800 or a small generator, but if you think about food, if
- 19:13you're going to cook all those type of things, you know you
- 19:16know your cooler that type of And how you going to cook, how
- 19:21much electricity you're going to burn.
- 19:23And and so it may make sense to get a bigger generator just to
- 19:28just to have more power than less power at the track.
- 19:31You know, you might need a canopy because it's going to
- 19:34rain or the sun, you know? There's the, you know, so the
- 19:40whole lot of the trip, it's a whole lot.
- 19:43Can you do it without a canopy? Can you do it without a
- 19:45degenerate? Yeah, depending on the track,
- 19:47you might be Away without a generator.
- 19:49As long as you have power, if it's just a track day, then you
- 19:53can probably get away without power because you can just run
- 19:55your street tires on your street bike and, and all that.
- 19:58And that's probably the cheapest way.
- 20:01But if you decide to go to track route, you know find yourself a
- 20:05race bike, that's already build. You know, whoever selling the
- 20:08property selling the stands, they may even be selling the
- 20:10trailer because she got to transport it.
- 20:11Right. At least with your street, by
- 20:13you can put your gear on and a backpack and go to the track and
- 20:16race and then right bike back home.
- 20:19But a race bike. You got to take tow it.
- 20:21And for me and I believe you as well, you know, you can rent a
- 20:26U-Haul open trailer for like fifteen dollars a day depending
- 20:29where you are in the country and that, you know.
- 20:31So but your car may need to tow hitch because I had to put a tow
- 20:34hitch on my Audi when I started to be able to tow and again
- 20:39again cost, right? That's that's you know you're at
- 20:42you got 45 Grand and you still haven't gotten on the track yet
- 20:46and you get on. They even like yeah this better
- 20:49be for me but you try to make it worth it anyway and and it does
- 20:54help you in the long run. How was she was a better driver
- 20:57well for sure better Riders. Sure.
- 20:59You know, should I take it to the car?
- 21:01Yes. Yeah it definitely does.
- 21:05And you know, I've been doing this now for almost 10 years and
- 21:09and you're going on your third for third year, fourth year
- 21:112020, I started. So you going on your third year,
- 21:14so he's going on his third year of racing and and have have yet
- 21:17to do a track day, right? Right.
- 21:20Yeah, pretty crazy. When I talk to people, they like
- 21:28this, the only only track you've written that and it's just
- 21:32strictly, you know, we could do like a practice day where it's
- 21:37like, you know, like a track day but you might actually do the
- 21:41races, you know? But yeah, this is the only only
- 21:45track only, right? Yeah, that's interesting.
- 21:53Yeah, for sure. And you know, it is worth it,
- 21:58you know what I mean? And it's a cost and but I think
- 22:02for most people, when they, you know, if they can afford to do
- 22:06it and and the lifestyle you're on it.
- 22:09So, you know, so you know, getting to the track and and you
- 22:14know your first day It's it's something you have never seen
- 22:20before so you know, you just you just got to go in there with an
- 22:24open mind and ask questions and people will help you.
- 22:28And and you know and that's the beautiful part about it because
- 22:31it's a very cool community and and if you don't know something
- 22:35or somebody see, if you need help and like TJ was saying
- 22:38earlier, it's nice if you can go with someone but at the same
- 22:41time, if you went by yourself, you know, you'll get help.
- 22:45You know people who helped you out and And and so, you know,
- 22:49that's the part, that's pretty cool.
- 22:51Everyone's on the same level, no one wants to see anyone failed.
- 22:55Exactly. Or you know, look like they're
- 22:57struggling. You exactly.
- 22:59Exactly. Exactly.
- 23:00And and and that's, and that's not even getting on a track.
- 23:03And so when you get on a track, Whatever you think it is, it's
- 23:10going to, it's going to be more, you know, whatever you think it
- 23:13is, whatever you think it is is going to be more if you're a fan
- 23:16of, you know, right in and and imagining, you know, being on a
- 23:21track and imagine, you know, gasps gear, you know, brake gas
- 23:26gear, break gasket, you know, me and and hidden corners and and
- 23:30leaning over and getting your machine.
- 23:34Yeah, you know, whatever, whatever you do, Don.
- 23:36The streets and you thought, yo, this is so dope.
- 23:39Oh yeah. It's a gazillion times more like
- 23:43again almost to the red line and to be able to do that and and
- 23:52and do it in the safest way. Are you going to fall?
- 23:55Yes. I mean that you you're gonna
- 23:58fall. So it just embrace it.
- 24:01They want to bring that part up. Yeah.
- 24:02But you know it'll happen. Yeah.
- 24:04You're gonna fall like rain. Like going Fallen as part of
- 24:09going fast. Yes, that's just the way it is
- 24:11because you're trying to test the limits of yourself and
- 24:15understand the limits of the bike.
- 24:17So all this gear is very important.
- 24:19So you gotta pick the right gear, make sure you safe out
- 24:21there, right? Like I said, I went to the
- 24:24penguin track school and I started out on the 400 and I did
- 24:29crash on the 400. I did a little side and I was, I
- 24:35was fine. Right - fine but I didn't know
- 24:38what I did wrong and talk to a lot of people and they were just
- 24:42like your tires are cold so you know it's just another right and
- 24:46experience but you will go down. Yeah.
- 24:48And so about you just you get up and keep going.
- 24:52I mean I you know what I mean. That's that's it.
- 24:55At the end of the day, it's like, you know, it's like
- 24:57skateboarding, it's like riding a BMX, you know, I'm saying?
- 25:00It's like walking, I mean, he'll we fall down, we don't stay
- 25:02down, you get back up and keep walking.
- 25:06It's no different. So, you know, and yeah, there's
- 25:09some bad Falls for sure. But usually, they're not usually
- 25:13your you get up and, you know, I've think I've fallen 67 times,
- 25:19maybe eight, you know, I mean and you get up and, and, you
- 25:23know, give us something you have to mend, then you go, man did if
- 25:26it's just, you know, you know, I learned expert.
- 25:30It's always a learning experience because you learn,
- 25:34you know, eventually Been out of beginning, but eventually would
- 25:37help or just do time, you learn what you did wrong.
- 25:41Yeah. You know, you learn what he did
- 25:44wrong and then when you get out there again, you little shaken
- 25:46up. Yep, for sure.
- 25:48I got a little experience that I had even though it's Loft, same
- 25:51time, we but, you know, little more experience now.
- 25:53And I crashed this past season and one of my friends that was
- 25:59behind me, saw the whole thing and ever since that crash he's
- 26:03been following me and he just mentioned how my writing is
- 26:07gone. And I get noticed because of
- 26:08that crash like I've Been a little slower, right?
- 26:12Right. Because you, because you don't,
- 26:13it's it's it's, it's all mental. It's all mental, you know,
- 26:20almost most bikes from At 400 ninja, maybe in the 300 can get
- 26:29within, you know, five seconds of of the lap record of the
- 26:35track record, right? And and so the bikes can do it.
- 26:39It's the rider that has to get themselves to believe that they
- 26:44can do it. You know what I mean?
- 26:45And at the end of the day it's a sport where you competing
- 26:49against other people but it's like golf or tennis wear a lot
- 26:53of its Mental, you got to talk yourself on the ledge, you got
- 26:56talking stuff off the ledge, you know, to get the best out of
- 27:00yourself and and the limits of the lack of experience you're
- 27:04going to fall. Even the top writers, in MotoGP
- 27:08Falls, it's it's part of writing and you know, you will push your
- 27:15own self long as you got the right gear, you know, you'll
- 27:18feel comfortable but then again you just ride to your limit.
- 27:21Yeah, there's coaches. There it is.
- 27:26There's you know there's New Riders who's also have never
- 27:29been on the tree. Exactly.
- 27:30As well. When you start, right?
- 27:32So when you look around you see it and you just you soak it all
- 27:37in and you'll develop a bond with those guys.
- 27:39Yep. And girls it well as I have and
- 27:43as I improved my friends just out there and we're all on the
- 27:47track together and it makes it even better because now, I know
- 27:51they're writing styles and Even more safe and we all want to go
- 27:56to work and we push, but not like we're winning, right 100K.
- 28:01When that own contracts. Yeah, exactly.
- 28:03Exactly. And, and that's the biggest
- 28:05part, it's all for fun. And, you know, we talked about
- 28:09these numbers, right? And, yes, you could invest, you
- 28:13know, two grand, 3 Grand in gear, you can invest in the
- 28:18trailer, you can vent sit in the vehicle.
- 28:21You can invest in a bike and you're at, you know, Depending
- 28:24on who you are, where you are, you could be at 10 15 grand or
- 28:27you could be at 60 Grand up, right?
- 28:30And you can go out there and you can fling your bike down the
- 28:33road. It could be your fault.
- 28:36It could be somebody else's fault.
- 28:38It could be mother nature or just mechanical and you go
- 28:44repair the bike, your P, your self and you try.
- 28:47Go do it again. Yeah, that's that's the that's
- 28:50how it should work but you know it's you never want to fall.
- 28:56That's the goal. That's the it's the goal is you
- 29:00ain't got insurance or someone hit.
- 29:02You can't you can't be like your old man.
- 29:03You owe me for this part, right? Yeah that let's let's talk about
- 29:06that a little bit you when you sign your name at a track I
- 29:12don't care if it's a race but track day.
- 29:16So so if you love your bike in the fine prints, Whatever
- 29:20happened to your machine, you cannot go after anybody at the
- 29:26track anybody. So if somebody runs over your
- 29:31bike purposely or on purpose you can't go after them.
- 29:36Once you sign your name to that piece of paper.
- 29:38So it's it's just the way it is and you might, you have to be
- 29:44willing to check your bike down the road.
- 29:48You can go slow but you can still fall, you know what I
- 29:53mean? So it that's that's that's part
- 29:55of it. You know.
- 29:56It's a very expensive Sport and and I'm just very expensive
- 30:01sport, you know, I mean, and you can ride for you.
- 30:03I've been riding since 2013, I've had Four crashes.
- 30:13In well over 200 races. And so most people don't crash
- 30:23often but it happened as, you know what I mean?
- 30:27So I'm not sitting here saying, you gotta crash every weekend
- 30:29but if you're pushing the limits and if you only way to learn is
- 30:32by crashing, then that's how you got to learn.
- 30:36If you can learn through, you know, watching videos and
- 30:39talking to people and watching the races and and and Absorbing
- 30:43it all then because it's all about your reaction time and and
- 30:47and sometimes you have nothing to do with it.
- 30:48I had two crashes where somebody ran into me, somebody ran to
- 30:52somebody else and put that person in front of me like
- 30:55that's stuff you, it does. Nothing you can do about it and
- 30:58and and that happens to writers and you know what I mean?
- 31:01That's that's part. That's part of it.
- 31:04Yeah we can we can say that for another topic because that's
- 31:07that's called damages. Yeah, it is when you want to
- 31:10continue. If you, when you just got there,
- 31:13And something happens, right? Yeah, and that's the part of it.
- 31:16So, you know, at the, you know, that's definitely will come in
- 31:21more details of just getting bikes together and how you get
- 31:24back out there and that mentality.
- 31:27And for every Rider is a little different.
- 31:28Some people go out there and crash and never show back.
- 31:31It's never come back, you know, other people go out there and
- 31:34crash and come back. It is, you do get butterflies
- 31:39out there and not gonna lie. I mean, it's not like the street
- 31:42where you got you Low line separating road yet much wider
- 31:45right? Track right there is a line to
- 31:48follow, right mate. Yeah, you don't even have to
- 31:50crash Sometimes. Some people just go out there
- 31:52and ride and don't come back, right?
- 31:55So it's not for everyone. But I think the more prepared
- 31:58you are and an understanding that a lot of different things
- 32:03can happen. So when you get out there, if
- 32:05something happens, it shouldn't deter you because it's you know,
- 32:11when you get it right. It's the best thing in the
- 32:14world. What he said, addiction is real.
- 32:19But the good thing is nine times out of ten, you will figure it
- 32:24out and get it. Right.
- 32:25Correct. And he won't be the ones that
- 32:28won't show back up. Exactly exactly.
- 32:31But if you, I will say, if you have a friend of five that go to
- 32:35a track day, I think one's going to show back up, maybe two,
- 32:42maybe two. Maybe too.
- 32:45Because, you know, it's a commitment.
- 32:47And was that, was that before you say that was that was that
- 32:52an example? You know, I'm just saying I've
- 33:01been at it long enough and I've seen, you know, the faces change
- 33:07my crew and I he, I know, I know, I know but I've seen other
- 33:12Crews And go, you know, saying and and and that's why I say
- 33:17that like it's not for everyone like anything else, you know
- 33:20make anything else. It's not for everyone, you know,
- 33:24but it's worth trying because anything in life.
- 33:28I think, you know that you want to do is we're trying as long as
- 33:33the legal, right? I gotta say that but, you know,
- 33:36I mean, I think it's worth trying at least once to see if
- 33:38you actually like it and enjoy it and want to do, maybe not
- 33:40even once because you probably have to use one thing like You
- 33:43have to learn the thing, you have to learn the craft because
- 33:47the learning process for some people may suck and for me, it
- 33:51sucks, you know, I'm saying and so it's like you can't really do
- 33:54it once if you want to do, you know, if you want to do a flip
- 33:57or whatever, you're not going to the first time you can almost
- 33:59break your neck. You know I'm saying but it's
- 34:02doing it over and over and over until you get it.
- 34:04Right? And that's this thing it's like
- 34:06you know if you just accept that, you know it's going to
- 34:09take you. Forever to be a really good
- 34:14motorcycle rider because you always trying to get better and
- 34:16better better even the top right, as the trying to get
- 34:19better and better, it like that and it's not just motorcycle,
- 34:21right? It's also this life.
- 34:24So as long as you go with that and you get to a point where
- 34:27you're like, okay, I know my body position, I know break in,
- 34:30I know, you know, Corner speed. I understand all these things,
- 34:34then you can say and you can go out there and ride and compete.
- 34:39Oh yeah, you got you got to get the basics down before you even
- 34:42think about fun. Think about fun.
- 34:44And yeah, it is actually fun in the basics down for some people
- 34:49for other people. I see, I've seen people flip
- 34:50bikes over school, like I mentioned before, but I did
- 35:01improve every weekend. It wasn't like every time I went
- 35:06out there, right? Proved by like, Overall, during
- 35:09the over the weekend was over. Every time I went, I improved on
- 35:12something whether it was time or always keep my feet on the pegs
- 35:18correctly and when I finally dragged me out excited and then
- 35:21I was trying to drag the knee the same Corner every time and
- 35:25you know and you know the pictures that they send out also
- 35:29helping like I gotta write down more and you know you get a lot
- 35:33of feedback Duffy back. Yeah.
- 35:36So I thought I will say it's If you're going to go, I would say
- 35:40do it track School. If you can for the first time
- 35:45and then do a track day to try to do practice what you learned
- 35:51in the school, because that's going to teach, that's going to
- 35:54make sure you don't have bad habits.
- 35:56If you go out into a track day and pick up bad habits and I got
- 36:00to learn how to undo it. So for mean 2018, I had a bad
- 36:05accident and, you know, I jacked up my hand and and you know, the
- 36:11following year I went back to racing But my hand wasn't 100%
- 36:15And I changed my body position to compensate for that.
- 36:20By the time, when my hand became 100% my body position was all
- 36:23jacked up, and it took me, you know, almost Six months to fix
- 36:32my body position again and and you can learn it on the street
- 36:35but to really get your body position down, you got to get
- 36:38track time. Yeah, pretty much it, you know.
- 36:41And and so you know, I say all that to say is like yeah, if you
- 36:44learn the right way, you know me, you'll save yourself.
- 36:48The time of trying to change bad habits and more see times
- 36:52better. They always say that and I do
- 36:54understand it after being on the track for three years, just ran
- 36:58as much as possible. Is most of us just muscle memory
- 37:02right now. That's that's all you really
- 37:04want and then just become second nature.
- 37:06You don't have to worry about body positions and break Marcus.
- 37:10You just all Focus. Swear you want to get to, but
- 37:14no, you gotta start out on school at least.
- 37:18And I'll track day, like you said or if the school is to
- 37:24racing, you can still do that, right?
- 37:26But as long as you, you know, have a guidance when you start
- 37:30out, There. Yeah, I think so.
- 37:34And you know and you know yeah if you can find a coach, you
- 37:39know, I'll say that part. But yeah I think just getting
- 37:42out and doing it is is just worried that, you know, like TJ
- 37:47just said is it's it's it's an experience and you know, we're
- 37:52not trying to sell it but, you know, I we're trying to just
- 37:56say, you know, learn it the right way to first time.
- 38:01And and it makes it easier. Do your research when it comes
- 38:05to buying gear, do your research when it comes to buying bikes.
- 38:09So let's say I'm going to a track day this weekend.
- 38:13Thursday, I got my helmet. I got my underarms a suit, my
- 38:19airbag suit my gloves. Mmm.
- 38:21So I'm ready to go. Yep, I'm renting a bike.
- 38:24Yep, I don't have my, you know, I have a generator.
- 38:28You know, I got all the tools I need.
- 38:30So I get to the track, you know? So what we do from there, no, we
- 38:36gotta find a, you gotta find out where you go to sign in.
- 38:39Yep, go sign in. You ask them where you can pit,
- 38:43you know, Park. Your stuff is essentially just
- 38:46to get a little map of the area Exact Track map right now.
- 38:49And in most tracks, I'll check all tracks.
- 38:52Have a website and have the track layout on the on the
- 38:56website where you can do all the stuff you need to do.
- 38:59So honestly, We if you print it out or just look at it and have
- 39:03that information, you can you'll have you won't be green as they
- 39:06say, you know? I mean you'll have you'll know
- 39:09how to get to you know, what you need to do, but your pet, you
- 39:12unpack, you figure out what the times to, you know, go through
- 39:15registration go through tech tech as where, you know, they
- 39:18check your bike to make sure your bike is safe to get on the
- 39:22track. Make sure your bike is complying
- 39:24with the rules of whatever you're trying to do.
- 39:28Make sure you have food. Lots of water Gatorade.
- 39:32You need some essential tools as well.
- 39:34I can't just show up without any tools, right?
- 39:36Need some tools to take care, take, you know, take your body,
- 39:39your body parts off the bike or fixed fix it or just it, you
- 39:44know, just the handlebars or whatever the case may, be your
- 39:46brake lever. Clutch, lever, or your yeah, I
- 39:50yeah, I would say change the oil to your bike before you go to
- 39:53the track because you're going to be beating on the engine.
- 39:56So put some fresh. Oil in it, you know what I mean?
- 39:58If you haven't changed your brake fluid in a long time, if
- 40:01you are a street Rider, change your brake fluid, how it always
- 40:05say, make sure your bike got steal.
- 40:07My, you know, if you got a sports car or bike your brake
- 40:12lines, better be steel braided. So Street or not consistency is
- 40:19is the best thing for muscle memory, consistency.
- 40:23So brake line, steel braided Break or brake fluid.
- 40:29You know what I mean? And and and you know something
- 40:32that you can inflate your ties with or deflate your tires test,
- 40:35your tire pressure tires. Also have to be, I think what
- 40:38they said, 70% of 65%. Yeah, 65% something like that.
- 40:42If the street tires track values, if you got tracked eyes
- 40:45on your bike, you already know what it is.
- 40:47And if you're buying a bike that has tracked eyes on it, buy some
- 40:51new rubbers for it. You mean, if you want to go deal
- 40:55T, if you just don't track. They on it, you don't have to
- 40:57keep it with Slicks or something like that or even with Tire
- 40:59warmers if you know you want to do track days like that for real
- 41:03for real, you can keep the tires on it, but if not go d.o.t., you
- 41:07don't want to show to attracting.
- 41:08First time with some mediocre tires, do not hit and all and
- 41:13all the giri rice don't make sense.
- 41:15Yeah, yeah. I will also say this try to be
- 41:19in some type of shape, you know? They mean that's the main like a
- 41:24lot of people get tired quick. Yeah, every turn is pretty much
- 41:29a squat. Yeah, Gemma from side to side.
- 41:31Once you learn how to write, you know, how to write how to ride.
- 41:36But you will be sore after the first time, the first time, the
- 41:40first sessions, but it, yeah, if you watching this, listen to
- 41:43this though, go ride a bicycle, a lot go, workout sit-ups
- 41:47push-ups, you have to go crazy, but if you can do sit-ups
- 41:50push-ups often and and work out like you're playing basketball
- 41:56or football, All, or you going to go play tennis on a regular
- 41:59basis. It is a sport and you know, I
- 42:02sat in the class and and and you know, I asked, you know, it's
- 42:07like you know what happens when you get tired And the answer was
- 42:13work out more, that's it because if you get fit at the, you know,
- 42:19when I first got out there like my arms are so fatigued.
- 42:23When I hit the brakes or break is only from break, my arms
- 42:27wasn't strong enough to hold me. So I would fall onto, I fell
- 42:31onto the tank because my arms were that week, I, I know it's
- 42:36like after a couple of races like laps x 6 or something,
- 42:41coming down the street. Like when I, let go of the
- 42:44throttle, I was just like it was so hard to grab the brake.
- 42:46Yeah. Oh, so hard.
- 42:47So hard. And I'm just, like, I can't have
- 42:49that happen. No, I can't squeeze the brake.
- 42:52Yeah. After, you know, going almost
- 42:54130 like, no, no, just put myself in a yes guy situation.
- 42:59So, work out the offseason workout.
- 43:02Do the exercises work on your reaction, do exercises, that
- 43:05works on reaction time. You know, you don't have to
- 43:08build muscles because you have to be flexible.
- 43:10Right? Lot of yoga.
- 43:13And a lot of leg exercises because you ride with your legs,
- 43:17right? You die, you know, they're going
- 43:18to tell you when you're, when you're on the bike you can your
- 43:23arms should be just limp right? And you can you just doing the
- 43:26controller's? You shouldn't really be stiff.
- 43:29And I had to learn how to relax on a bike ride in because I
- 43:33wrote around stiff all the time, and if you, if you do this
- 43:36clinch, you know, three, four, five minutes, you're done use
- 43:40too much energy. It's all about, Even energy is
- 43:43correct and bar input yet on the bike is very important for us.
- 43:48Another riding position, exactly.
- 43:50But if you put too much input on the handlebars, they will tell
- 43:56you you'd be on the floor. Yeah.
- 43:58So it's really your course, a lot of sit-ups, a lot of
- 44:01bicycling or cycling or squats so lateral squats and and that
- 44:05type of thing because you're turning with your legs, you're
- 44:09breaking with your legs, you know, you Legs are very
- 44:12involved. Your arms are just there for the
- 44:15controller's, squeeze the brake clutch gas, right?
- 44:19And not be a machine. Like that was always intrigued.
- 44:23You know, before I got on the tracked it is like how all these
- 44:27guys do it, you know, so watching the, you know, the good
- 44:30ones, do certain things and on the street, like how they
- 44:34downshift twice at a certain area?
- 44:37Like well, I gotta try that. Yeah.
- 44:39Or when Italy, in this certain way on this corner.
- 44:42I'm like, I got to try that. Right when I get out there, I'm
- 44:44just like, whoa. Exactly.
- 44:46And you know, I try to get myself to that level and
- 44:49brightest, you know, you make a good point, like, go watch other
- 44:53Riders like you watch and see what people are faster than you
- 44:57and how they're doing it. And we're doing it and you may
- 44:59not understand the why? And and and a lot of these
- 45:03Riders you can go up to and just talk to.
- 45:04So if you want to understand the why they're doing it but it is
- 45:08very good to go watch Riders because that's the That you
- 45:12learn a lot. Yeah it's just watching where
- 45:17they break so you got you got to set yourself up for, you know,
- 45:22for each turn and watching where they down, shift up shift, where
- 45:28they where they put the head down, certain breaking markers,
- 45:32you can go to different Corners, it's good to also follow these
- 45:37Riders. Yeah, you know, just a touch
- 45:40limit so you can improve each time.
- 45:43Yes, I'm gonna wrap up the show and saying, you know, there's a
- 45:47lot of information out there and do the research and you know,
- 45:52don't be afraid to ask questions or reach out to different, you
- 45:55know, writing groups and forms with the Facebook or just, you
- 45:58know, just typing in your search bar and try to get as much
- 46:01information as a lot of videos on YouTube that you can watch
- 46:05about, obviously everything in the world.
- 46:07So there's a lot of good on most motorcycle riding and racing and
- 46:09body positions and just getting to the track and And that type
- 46:13of thing. So you know the best thing
- 46:16though was that. So now if they still confused on
- 46:19how to get to the track they can access you can they can watch
- 46:22it, be favored fast. Yeah you know it's very they can
- 46:26send as email. Yeah.
- 46:27Ask questions, you know, give you the right answers.
- 46:31If you can't find anyone your that's right.
- 46:33I should correct. This be forever cool at gmail,
- 46:36you definitely can get that get there.
- 46:38Also on Instagram and everywhere, you know, Just put
- 46:44it in the search bar and it will help you and and that's kind of
- 46:46the goal is we are episodes coming out where we're going to
- 46:49be talking about bike. Bills bike bells for us.
- 46:53So we can go race and and and just how to season is going and
- 46:58how many races are we gonna be racing next year and and all
- 47:01that fun stuff all the pros and cons?
- 47:05I think the only con is the cost.
- 47:11Yeah. And this steps to this because I
- 47:13got, you know, we, you know, out we can keep going on but it
- 47:16really is like there's, there's there's there's levels and, you
- 47:20know, and that's part of the process.
- 47:23And so that's what we're going to try to do with with these,
- 47:26with these show be forever. Cool.
- 47:28And also, two wheels on coffee with TJ where we're going to
- 47:34meet up and do some really cool things and and continue to build
- 47:39the community that we have been part of been blessed.
- 47:42To be a part of, right? That's right.
- 47:44So I am peace. Peace out, guys.
