- 0:21Speaker 1: King Arthur and the Round Table by Andrew Lang. The
- 0:24Speaker 1: Quest for the Holy Grail An adventure of Sir Gawaine.
- 0:30Speaker 1: When Sir Gwaine departed, he rode along without any adventure,
- 0:34Speaker 1: from Whitsunday till Michaelmas. He rode and found not the
- 0:38Speaker 1: tenth part of the adventures he was wont to do.
- 0:42Speaker 1: But it befell on a day that he met Sir
- 0:44Speaker 1: Ector de Mars, at which they rejoiced exceedingly, complaining to
- 0:50Speaker 1: one another of the lack of adventure in the quest
- 0:53Speaker 1: on which they were set. Truly, said Sir Gawaine to
- 0:57Speaker 1: Sir Ectar, I am nine weary of this quest, and
- 1:01Speaker 1: I am loath to follow it to further strange countries.
- 1:06Speaker 1: One thing seems strange to me, said Sir Ectar. I
- 1:10Speaker 1: have met with twenty knights, and they all complain as
- 1:13Speaker 1: I do. I wonder, said Sir Gawaine, where your brother
- 1:18Speaker 1: is I can hear nothing of him, answered Sir Ectar,
- 1:23Speaker 1: nor of Sir Galahad, Sir Percival, or Sir Bores. But
- 1:27Speaker 1: they farewell, no doubt, for they have no peers. As
- 1:32Speaker 1: they sat talking, there appeared before them a hand showing
- 1:36Speaker 1: unto the elbow, covered with a red samite, and holding
- 1:40Speaker 1: a great candle that burned right clear. And the hand
- 1:44Speaker 1: passed into the chapel and vanished. They knew not where.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Then they heard a voice which said, knights full of
- 1:52Speaker 1: evil faith and poor belief, These two things have failed you,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and therefore you may not come to the adventure of
- 1:59Speaker 1: the whole grail and thereat. They went to the Holy Man,
- 2:04Speaker 1: to whom they confessed their sins. Said he, this is
- 2:09Speaker 1: the meaning of the vision. You have failed in three things, charity, fasting,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and truth, and have been great murderers, Sir said Gawayne.
- 2:22Speaker 1: By words, it seems that our sins will not let
- 2:25Speaker 1: us labor in that quest, truly, answered the hermit. There'll
- 2:30Speaker 1: be a hundred such as you, to whom it will
- 2:33Speaker 1: bring naught but shame. So Sir Gawayne departed and followed
- 2:38Speaker 1: Sir Ector, who had written on before end of section
- 2:45Speaker 1: fourteen
