Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcast on the Brink. Friday,
- 0:23Speaker 1: January sixteenth, our second episode of the week. Yesterday we
- 0:27Speaker 1: were joined by Tyler Tashman to do a brief preview
- 0:32Speaker 1: of the Indiana Iowa basketball game coming up Saturday at
- 0:35Speaker 1: Assembly Hall. We also talked some IU football with Tyler,
- 0:38Speaker 1: who of course covers the Iowah Hawk guys, who gave
- 0:42Speaker 1: Indiana one of their better tests of the regular season,
- 0:46Speaker 1: at least at Kennec Stadium, Indiana. That was really a
- 0:50Speaker 1: pivotal win for them on this run to fifteen to
- 0:53Speaker 1: zero and reaching the CFP National Championship Game. But today
- 0:58Speaker 1: we're going to talk specifically IU football with my dad,
- 1:03Speaker 1: Rick Bozich, retired Basketball Writers Association Hall of Famer, and
- 1:08Speaker 1: as you can see there if you're watching on YouTube,
- 1:11Speaker 1: his title IU Football Observer. Since nineteen fifty nine, you've
- 1:16Speaker 1: covered a lot of bad IU football for many years.
- 1:22Speaker 1: You covered also a lot of bad Kentucky and Louisville football.
- 1:24Speaker 1: But in terms of football stories in this area, I mean,
- 1:32Speaker 1: we've had conversations that this IU football run and this
- 1:36Speaker 1: turnaround is arguably one of the greatest stories in college
- 1:39Speaker 1: football history. But this has got to be the and
- 1:43Speaker 1: coincidentally happens the year after you retire, so you're not
- 1:45Speaker 1: actually covering the team on a day day basis anymore.
- 1:48Speaker 1: But this has got to be the top of the
- 1:51Speaker 1: list in terms of college football stories ever in this
- 1:54Speaker 1: part of the country. Correct.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I don't think you have to limit it to this
- 1:58Speaker 2: part of the country. I think and limited to the
- 2:01Speaker 2: entire country. I can't think of a story more improbable
- 2:07Speaker 2: over the whole season. People have early on when coach
- 2:11Speaker 2: Signetti was changing things, they compared to Indiana, to Kansas
- 2:14Speaker 2: State and what Bill Snyder did. But they never really
- 2:17Speaker 2: got close to winning a national title, and I don't
- 2:19Speaker 2: think they had any undefeated seasons. You know, Miami when
- 2:26Speaker 2: they won their first national title under Howard Schnellenberger was
- 2:30Speaker 2: a remarkable story because Miami had been bad for a
- 2:34Speaker 2: while and some people wanted to sort of either de
- 2:39Speaker 2: emphasize or eliminate the program. They'd already eliminated basketball for
- 2:42Speaker 2: a while if you checked Miami Hurricanes.
- 2:43Speaker 3: They closed down their.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Basketball program for a while and Schnellberger came in. But
- 2:48Speaker 2: it was this fifth year and they upset Nebraska, which
- 2:52Speaker 2: at the time was considered not only the best team
- 2:55Speaker 2: in the country, but maybe the best team of all time.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They upset them in the Orange Bowl and won the
- 3:00Speaker 2: national championship. You know, there are probably other couple, one
- 3:03Speaker 2: or two other stories I can think of, but I
- 3:07Speaker 2: can't think of any, uh that were a title one
- 3:11Speaker 2: by a program like Indiana, which was so far down
- 3:15Speaker 2: for so long.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And the the crazy thing about it is Signetti came
- 3:21Speaker 1: in and talked about all these things, and everyone thought
- 3:24Speaker 1: he was crazy, And now he's been able to deliver.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I mean, I can remember and it still gets played
- 3:29Speaker 1: all the time on TV, on broadcast and gets played
- 3:31Speaker 1: on social media. What he said at that first IU
- 3:34Speaker 1: basketball game about Ohio State, Michigan and Purdue being terrible,
- 3:39Speaker 1: are sucking or whatever he said. You know, he he
- 3:41Speaker 1: came up I think did a hit on it was
- 3:45Speaker 1: a it was a Big Ten show early in his tenure,
- 3:47Speaker 1: where he talked about he wanted to come up to
- 3:49Speaker 1: Indianapolis because he'd be there the next year to coach
- 3:51Speaker 1: in the Big Ten championship game. He only did that,
- 3:54Speaker 1: you know, one year later than he said. But all
- 3:57Speaker 1: of these things, I think, I think in the beginning
- 4:01Speaker 1: were important because he's described when he came into the program,
- 4:06Speaker 1: just the level of despair that he could feel around
- 4:09Speaker 1: campus and the program and changing the attitude. How important
- 4:13Speaker 1: do you think was that the early tone setting that
- 4:17Speaker 1: Signette did in terms of how he wanted to project himself,
- 4:21Speaker 1: how he wanted to be viewed, and getting this thing
- 4:24Speaker 1: turned around, because not only did he say these things,
- 4:27Speaker 1: he quickly backed them.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Up essential And I think I'm not sure he believed
- 4:35Speaker 2: the stuff he said to the degree that he said it,
- 4:38Speaker 2: but I think he believed that he had to say it.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You know, the way I look at it is when
- 4:42Speaker 2: you have big organizations or big corporations, creating change is
- 4:47Speaker 2: a difficult thing to do because the culture and the
- 4:49Speaker 2: mindset has been baked into it for so many years.
- 4:52Speaker 2: So he was speaking to the players who were there
- 4:55Speaker 2: on the program, he was speaking to future recruits, he
- 4:59Speaker 2: was speaking to administrators and people around IU, and he
- 5:03Speaker 2: was speaking to the fans. And the only way to
- 5:06Speaker 2: create change, I think is to shock the system. And
- 5:10Speaker 2: he shocked the system. And I think the first comment
- 5:13Speaker 2: he made was the one on the BTN show from
- 5:16Speaker 2: Lucas Oil that was the day of his original press conference,
- 5:20Speaker 2: and I remember watching it and like when he said that,
- 5:23Speaker 2: it was like when he was leaving, like, yeah, I'll
- 5:25Speaker 2: be back.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Next year because we're gonna play in the Gameless. I
- 5:27Speaker 3: just I just laughed. I said, does you know where
- 5:32Speaker 3: he is? I mean, what is he? What is he
- 5:33Speaker 3: talking about?
- 5:34Speaker 2: And then he doubled down with the comments at the
- 5:38Speaker 2: basketball game, and then he tripled down with the when
- 5:42Speaker 2: he got questioned at the press conference and he did
- 5:44Speaker 2: the you know, I win, Google me. And even after
- 5:50Speaker 2: he won, for a while, I mean, people still weren't
- 5:53Speaker 2: all the way I don't think everybody's all the way in,
- 5:56Speaker 2: even everybody around IU. I don't think it's been all
- 6:00Speaker 2: the way in until maybe this year when they went
- 6:03Speaker 2: on the road and beat Oregon. That was the that
- 6:05Speaker 2: was the last call to get everybody on board, and
- 6:08Speaker 2: from that point forward people believe. But I remember before
- 6:11Speaker 2: last season listening to Gayalen Clavio and Scott Caulfield because
- 6:16Speaker 2: they've done an IU football podcast for a long time,
- 6:19Speaker 2: and they were doing the pregame predictions and they were
- 6:21Speaker 2: already they were ahead of the line in terms of
- 6:24Speaker 2: being believers, and they were picking like ten and two
- 6:27Speaker 2: or eleven and one, and I remember thinking, come on, man,
- 6:31Speaker 2: I mean eight and four would be a great year,
- 6:34Speaker 2: considering it was a new coach, and then it was
- 6:38Speaker 2: what ten and zero? And they never trailed at any point,
- 6:41Speaker 2: So it's important who's done Nobody's done that. I mean,
- 6:44Speaker 2: nobody has ever done that. Nobody what was the first
- 6:48Speaker 2: moment last year?
- 6:50Speaker 1: And obviously I want to talk more about this year
- 6:52Speaker 1: and get ahead also to the game Miami and Indiana.
- 6:56Speaker 1: But I'm curious just you were covering its last year.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I know you went to the playoff game up at
- 7:02Speaker 1: Notre Dame, but during the regular season, was there a
- 7:05Speaker 1: moment or a game where you thought to yourself, Wow,
- 7:08Speaker 1: this team really could be something special. You know. I
- 7:13Speaker 1: remember watching just the UCLA road game and you say
- 7:17Speaker 1: it wasn't a great team. But I remember Signetti saying
- 7:20Speaker 1: something about, you know, we're going out there to we
- 7:22Speaker 1: don't care if we play in a parking lot. We're
- 7:24Speaker 1: going out there to kick somebody, you know what. And
- 7:27Speaker 1: I'm thinking, Okay, we'll see, you know, we'll see how
- 7:30Speaker 1: this all turns out. And he goes out there and
- 7:31Speaker 1: absolutely destroys UCLA. It wasn't even really a competitive game,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and then the Nebraska home game they went I think
- 7:38Speaker 1: it was fifty six to seven and crushed them. But
- 7:40Speaker 1: I'm curious, just from your perspective, was there a moment
- 7:43Speaker 1: or two last season during the regular season where you thought, well,
- 7:46Speaker 1: this is this is different, this is something we've not
- 7:49Speaker 1: seen before.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I don't remember the order of the games last year.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I went to three of them. I think it was
- 7:55Speaker 2: Nebraska first, then uh Maryland and and maybe Washington. But
- 8:03Speaker 2: during that stretch of games is when my mind got
- 8:07Speaker 2: changed to watch of a just how relentless they were
- 8:11Speaker 2: and how dominant they were. B you could more, more
- 8:15Speaker 2: and more people were coming to the games and getting
- 8:17Speaker 2: in their seats early because he got all that stuff
- 8:20Speaker 2: cleared up in terms of you know, when the game starts,
- 8:22Speaker 2: being your seats and don't leave at halftime and see
- 8:25Speaker 2: just to look at the the playmakers they had on
- 8:28Speaker 2: both sides of the ball and Ponds I was there
- 8:30Speaker 2: for Ponds made that long interception and there was a
- 8:33Speaker 2: block pun and some long passes and you know, you
- 8:36Speaker 2: could see what then won one of those games, I
- 8:39Speaker 2: think with Tavan Jackson as the quarterback because work had
- 8:42Speaker 2: gotten hurt, maybe against Nebraska and then Tavan Jackson had
- 8:45Speaker 2: to play I think maybe against Washington, I think even
- 8:49Speaker 2: that didn't slow him down. So for me, that's when
- 8:52Speaker 2: I was like, this is different, but not National Championship different.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I mean you looked at their players and said, yeah,
- 8:59Speaker 2: they got I think got some good players, but they
- 9:02Speaker 2: didn't have any first round draft picks. Nobody really jumped
- 9:05Speaker 2: off the page of like this is a guy that
- 9:08Speaker 2: could carry a team long way. You know through a season.
- 9:12Speaker 2: They didn't have the players Ohio State had and they
- 9:14Speaker 2: didn't have the players Notre Dame.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Haven't it showed up?
- 9:16Speaker 2: You know when they played both those teams, you could
- 9:18Speaker 2: tell last year I think I think that still needed
- 9:21Speaker 2: to do some fine tuning. They need to get better
- 9:23Speaker 2: for sure on the offensive line, and they needed to
- 9:26Speaker 2: get better maybe a little bit on the defensive line too.
- 9:30Speaker 3: And then he's done that.
- 9:32Speaker 1: What do you think the biggest Obviously the Ohio State
- 9:35Speaker 1: game last year didn't go very well out there. You know,
- 9:38Speaker 1: he's talked about not ready for the moment. Same thing
- 9:41Speaker 1: with the Notre Dame game up there in the playoffs.
- 9:45Speaker 1: What do you think the biggest thing that changed from
- 9:48Speaker 1: last season to this season? Because they They were a
- 9:51Speaker 1: great team last season. They made the playoff, but I
- 9:53Speaker 1: think a lot of people coming into the season. You
- 9:55Speaker 1: look at the preseason rankings, they were I think nineteen
- 9:58Speaker 1: or twenty maybe in the AP Coach's poll, and they
- 10:00Speaker 1: even moved down I think a couple of spots after
- 10:03Speaker 1: the first couple of weeks when they didn't beat Old
- 10:05Speaker 1: Dominion very convincingly, and I think people thought, well, this
- 10:09Speaker 1: is kind of a lightning and a bottle situation. There'll
- 10:11Speaker 1: be a good team, but they're probably gonna lose three
- 10:13Speaker 1: or four games and make a good Bowl game. I
- 10:15Speaker 1: even remember looking back to some of the bowl predictions
- 10:17Speaker 1: at the beginning of the season, and they were in
- 10:20Speaker 1: not even being mentioned as in the trust the playoff team. Yeah, well,
- 10:24Speaker 1: what do you Obviously Mendoz is a big deal. Anytime
- 10:27Speaker 1: you can recruit a great quarterback that like he is
- 10:30Speaker 1: and have a Heisman Trophy winner, that's a big part
- 10:33Speaker 1: of it. But what do you think changed from last
- 10:38Speaker 1: year to take them from a really good team to
- 10:40Speaker 1: now a great team?
- 10:44Speaker 3: Probably a lot of things.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I mean, a was it was second year, so a
- 10:48Speaker 2: lot of the players that came back had already been
- 10:50Speaker 2: through what they were doing, and they could work with
- 10:54Speaker 2: some of the newcomers on getting them on board to
- 10:56Speaker 2: do things the way signify and the coaching staff and
- 10:59Speaker 2: wanted to be the strength and conditioning coach had more
- 11:02Speaker 2: time with those guys. Excuse me, I think he's an
- 11:05Speaker 2: important factor. And see they improved their talent level. You know,
- 11:12Speaker 2: you can start on the offensive line, Coogan. No disrespect
- 11:15Speaker 2: to Mike Katitch because I don't want him to pound me. Uh.
- 11:19Speaker 2: If you've watched him celebrate some of the games, he looks.
- 11:23Speaker 2: But Cougan has been tremendous player and a tremendous leader.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Bray Lynch and Evans and Smith came back from last year,
- 11:31Speaker 2: so they're more experienced. And then they brought in Benson
- 11:34Speaker 2: and a Johnny stepped forward, so the offensive line has
- 11:37Speaker 2: been better. Noah Kowski's an improvement at tight end. He's
- 11:42Speaker 2: a really, really good blocker. Nobody talks about that. He's
- 11:45Speaker 2: a tremendous blocker, and he's become a better receiver the
- 11:48Speaker 2: second half of the season. Cooper's another year of experience.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Sarats you know, got a tremendous connection with Mendoza. Charlie
- 11:57Speaker 2: Becker over the second half of the season has become
- 12:00Speaker 2: I'm a very, very you know, productive deep threat. He
- 12:05Speaker 2: allows him to stretch the field and probably makes it
- 12:07Speaker 2: easier for some of the under routes or on play
- 12:10Speaker 2: action passing to take care of that. So yeah, and
- 12:14Speaker 2: Mendoza is better than Curtis Rourke. I mean, you're right,
- 12:16Speaker 2: he didn't start. His first couple of games weren't great,
- 12:19Speaker 2: But in his numbers aren't They don't blow you away
- 12:22Speaker 2: in terms of yards per game or even the number
- 12:26Speaker 2: of touchdown passes he's thrown is it's good. That's not
- 12:29Speaker 2: like super extraordinary. But what is incredible, and it's been
- 12:34Speaker 2: talked about many times, is that he doesn't throw interceptions.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And to have five or six games, however many it
- 12:40Speaker 2: is where he's had more touchdown passes then incompletions is
- 12:45Speaker 2: unheard of. And I'm not even talking yet about the defense,
- 12:47Speaker 2: where you know, Fisher's got another year of experience, Hardy's
- 12:51Speaker 2: become better. Isaiah Jones has become the guy that barely
- 12:57Speaker 2: played to a playmaker who makes big gets and gets turnovers.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Lewis Moore came back and gave him a you know,
- 13:03Speaker 2: a guy who could be a NFL player at safety.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Uh Ponds isn't one of the best cornerbacks in the country.
- 13:11Speaker 2: The defensive line is is solid. You know, they've they've
- 13:16Speaker 2: they've they've got legitimate players at every position.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And the other thing that's that's really impressed me, and
- 13:21Speaker 1: I know this is something we've tested about throughout the season,
- 13:24Speaker 1: just about some of the injuries that they've been able
- 13:27Speaker 1: to overcome, particularly on the defensive line losing daily. I
- 13:32Speaker 1: think a lot of people thought that would be a
- 13:34Speaker 1: problem and remembered how that would turn out. But he's
- 13:41Speaker 1: been able to uh Are Indiana's just been able to
- 13:44Speaker 1: kind of shore shore.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Up any.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Potential weaknesses that they have had from from the uh
- 13:52Speaker 1: the injury perspective, and the same thing with with Becker.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Not an injury thing, but a young player emerging to
- 13:58Speaker 1: me is a good sign of coaching because it's the
- 14:01Speaker 1: next man up mentality of all right, you haven't gotten
- 14:05Speaker 1: a chance to play, but when your numbers called, you're
- 14:07Speaker 1: actually ready to play. That shows me that they're not
- 14:10Speaker 1: just working on developing the starters, and they're also building
- 14:13Speaker 1: a team for the future and developing their younger players.
- 14:17Speaker 3: No question about it.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I mean a defensive end, they're actually down two guys
- 14:20Speaker 2: because Colin Wyatt went down first and then Stephen Daily
- 14:23Speaker 2: went down, and Duke Way comes in, you know, and
- 14:29Speaker 2: blocks a punt and had a couple of sacks. And
- 14:32Speaker 2: he's a red shirt freshman I believe, who was a
- 14:35Speaker 2: three star recruit, wasn't even like one of the top
- 14:38Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty players in the state of Georgia.
- 14:40Speaker 2: He was going to go to James Madison instead when
- 14:44Speaker 2: Signetti came to Indiana, he went to Indiana. So that's
- 14:47Speaker 2: great evaluation, great work in the weight room, and then
- 14:51Speaker 2: great coaching to get a guy to be that much
- 14:53Speaker 2: of a factor. Usually guys that are three stars, you
- 14:57Speaker 2: might not expect them to even become a contributor to
- 15:01Speaker 2: their third or fourth year. This is his second year,
- 15:04Speaker 2: and Becker is another one. He's another red shirt freshman,
- 15:07Speaker 2: I believe, And he's a guy that strikes me as
- 15:11Speaker 2: being tremendously motivated that he feels like when he was
- 15:14Speaker 2: in high school he was overlooked or under recruited, and
- 15:19Speaker 2: he's wanting to show people how good he really is.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I know his dad played at Ohio State, and I've
- 15:25Speaker 2: seen pictures of him going to an Ohio State game
- 15:27Speaker 2: as a kid, and I think he was really motivated
- 15:30Speaker 2: in that game to show the Buck guys that they
- 15:32Speaker 2: missed out on not looking at him.
- 15:35Speaker 1: So both teams as they prepare for Monday night, have
- 15:38Speaker 1: had tremendous runs through the playoffs. It's not just Indiana
- 15:42Speaker 1: beating Alabama like they did in Oregon. Miami equally impressive
- 15:46Speaker 1: by going obviously to Texas A and M and then
- 15:49Speaker 1: beating Ohio State standing toe to toe with him in
- 15:51Speaker 1: many ways that went over Ohio State more impressive than
- 15:54Speaker 1: what Indiana did, just how they blitzed him early and
- 15:57Speaker 1: kind of took over the game and never really lost control,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and then obviously showing they could win a tight game
- 16:04Speaker 1: against Old Miss and knocking the SEC out of the
- 16:07Speaker 1: playoffs for good this season. When you look at this matchup,
- 16:13Speaker 1: obviously Indiana's I think a little bit over a touchdown
- 16:16Speaker 1: favorite right now depending on where you look. So Indiana's
- 16:22Speaker 1: that's a pretty solid number for a national championship game.
- 16:24Speaker 1: But obviously Indiana's earned it with the way they've played
- 16:27Speaker 1: throughout the season and they're two dominant wins. What are
- 16:31Speaker 1: what are your initial thoughts on how these teams match
- 16:34Speaker 1: up with each other and maybe a key or two
- 16:38Speaker 1: for each side if they're gonna win the game.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, the strength of Miami's team is their run defense.
- 16:46Speaker 2: In my opinion, I think they led the ACC and
- 16:49Speaker 2: rushing defense limited teams to under three yards of carry.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And Indiana has been really good at running the ball
- 16:56Speaker 2: against good teams and getting themselves, you know, into reasonable
- 17:02Speaker 2: second down plays and reasonable third down play. So running
- 17:06Speaker 2: the ball on first down is going to be important,
- 17:09Speaker 2: you know. I think the second thing will be how
- 17:12Speaker 2: much pressure they can put on and make Carson Beck uncomfortable.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Carson Beck, you know, as a was he a fifth
- 17:19Speaker 2: or six year player. He played at Georgia on some
- 17:22Speaker 2: really good teams. He's very talented, but he's had some
- 17:26Speaker 2: bad games and if you look, he's he threw the
- 17:28Speaker 2: second most interception or he has thrown the second most
- 17:31Speaker 2: interceptions of any quarterback in the ACC. Know, stats might
- 17:36Speaker 2: be a little skewed because he's played more games, but uh,
- 17:40Speaker 2: he's a guy that has been known to to make
- 17:43Speaker 2: some bad plays, and it will be up to Brian
- 17:47Speaker 2: Haynes and his defense to find some ways to to
- 17:49Speaker 2: get some bad plays, to get some turnovers on him,
- 17:52Speaker 2: because as you saw in the Oregon game, that was
- 17:55Speaker 2: the key reason where that was such a route. If
- 17:57Speaker 2: you get an interception on the first play and what
- 17:59Speaker 2: they're they recovered at least two other fumbles. I think
- 18:03Speaker 2: right that the blocked the punt that that was a
- 18:07Speaker 2: huge advantage for I us.
- 18:08Speaker 3: So I'd say I use ability.
- 18:09Speaker 2: To run the ball and their ability to make Carson
- 18:12Speaker 2: Beck uncomfortable.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Is there any reason to think that I was going
- 18:16Speaker 1: to have any issue running the ball in this game
- 18:19Speaker 1: because we've seen them go up against other defenses and
- 18:21Speaker 1: they've been able to figure out. But is there any
- 18:23Speaker 1: is Miami's run defense on a different level from anything
- 18:29Speaker 1: any Indiana seen so far?
- 18:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it'll it's as good as they faced.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I mean, because they got a couple of guys that
- 18:35Speaker 2: are NFL guys.
- 18:37Speaker 3: They get a I don't.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Know their names, two defensive ends that are.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Right NFL guys. I got linebackers. I mean, if you
- 18:46Speaker 2: go I hate doing this. If you go by the
- 18:49Speaker 2: recruiting rankings, Miami's got better talent according to what the
- 18:53Speaker 2: recruiting people say. And if you go back to the preseason,
- 18:56Speaker 2: I think Miami was pretty much a consensus top seven,
- 19:00Speaker 2: maybe even a top five team. A lot of people
- 19:03Speaker 2: were picking them h to be in the playoff and
- 19:07Speaker 2: to do well. It was it was like Penn State, uh, Clemson, Miami,
- 19:12Speaker 2: and I don't know, maybe Georgia or Ohio State. Those
- 19:15Speaker 2: were the top five teams.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Uh.
- 19:17Speaker 2: And they started out the year by beating Notre Dame,
- 19:19Speaker 2: and they had they beat Florida I think convincingly. They
- 19:23Speaker 2: they they beat South Florida convincingly after South Florida had
- 19:26Speaker 2: started the season with a couple of impressive wins. And
- 19:29Speaker 2: then Miami lost that game to Louisville here and they
- 19:33Speaker 2: lost the game to SMU at SMU, I think one
- 19:35Speaker 2: of them was in overtime, and they lost.
- 19:38Speaker 1: The Louisville game. It was in Miami, I believe.
- 19:40Speaker 3: It wasn't Miami, that's right.
- 19:42Speaker 1: And uh three four interceptions in that game.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Right, So you know, people kind of got off the
- 19:48Speaker 2: Miami bandwagon at that point. And really until the last
- 19:52Speaker 2: week or two of the season, many people were projecting
- 19:56Speaker 2: they weren't going to make the playoff and they only
- 19:57Speaker 2: did make the playoff, uh uh, probably because Duke beat
- 20:01Speaker 2: Virginia in the ACC championship game. If Virginia wins that game,
- 20:05Speaker 2: Virginia goes as the ACC champ And I don't think
- 20:08Speaker 2: the committee would have felt as obligated to put Miami in.
- 20:11Speaker 2: They probably would have put Notre Dame in, but it
- 20:14Speaker 2: didn't turn out that way. So then they go and
- 20:17Speaker 2: you know, they stuffed Texas A and m what was
- 20:21Speaker 2: that tend enough I don't even remember to three end
- 20:24Speaker 2: of three, And then they stuffed Ohio State and then
- 20:28Speaker 2: they you know, they outplayed Old miss statistically, the score
- 20:33Speaker 2: was closer than the statistics were.
- 20:34Speaker 3: But you know, they're a good team.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Uh, you know, if if Indiana doesn't play its best football,
- 20:41Speaker 2: Miami is certainly capable of winning.
- 20:45Speaker 1: One of the things I've I've read a couple of
- 20:47Speaker 1: different previous of this game that kind of mentioned keys
- 20:51Speaker 1: for Miami is being able to stop Indiana getting getting
- 20:54Speaker 1: from getting into so many third and manageable situations. It
- 20:57Speaker 1: seems like every IU game I watched, these long sustained drives.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Part of the reason they're able to do that is
- 21:03Speaker 1: because every time it's third down, it's you know, third
- 21:05Speaker 1: and three, third and four, they're in these manageable situations.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Do you agree with with that being a key from
- 21:12Speaker 1: the Miami side. And also I'm curious what you think
- 21:17Speaker 1: about just the what the atmosphere is going to be
- 21:20Speaker 1: like down there, because it's obviously much different than a
- 21:24Speaker 1: it's in Miami Stadium, but it's not going to be
- 21:28Speaker 1: a home game for them necessarily based on how the
- 21:30Speaker 1: tickets are going to be allotted.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Yeah, indiansibility to run the ball will be critical in
- 21:38Speaker 2: terms of keeping them.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Out of second law or third and long. For sure.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I think Miami thrives on emotion. I think they thrive
- 21:47Speaker 2: on intimidation. They thrive on trash talking, and that's they
- 21:51Speaker 2: embrace that stuff. They you know, they want to come
- 21:54Speaker 2: out on the field and think they're the baddest guys
- 21:57Speaker 2: out there. They've been known to be penalized because of
- 22:00Speaker 2: lack of discipline, and that could be a factor in
- 22:02Speaker 2: the I use favor, but if you let them get rolling,
- 22:06Speaker 2: they kind of feed on that stuff. So it'll be
- 22:08Speaker 2: real important if they can't run the ball that they
- 22:11Speaker 2: can protect Fernando Mendoza because I'm sure that Miami part
- 22:14Speaker 2: of their plan will be the same thing which I
- 22:17Speaker 2: thought Ohio State's plan was was like get to Mendoza
- 22:21Speaker 2: as many times as you can, and even if you
- 22:22Speaker 2: don't sack them, hit him and make the hits accumulate
- 22:27Speaker 2: over the course.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Of the game.
- 22:28Speaker 2: And Ohio State did that as you remember in the
- 22:31Speaker 2: first play of the game when Caden Curry flatten Mendoza
- 22:33Speaker 2: and knocked him out for a play. And I think
- 22:35Speaker 2: Miami will be trying to do everything they can to
- 22:38Speaker 2: sort of intimidate Fernando Mendoza. And what was the second
- 22:42Speaker 2: part of the questioning and.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Just about the atmosphere or what it's could be like.
- 22:46Speaker 2: And I think it's going to be pretty even. I mean,
- 22:50Speaker 2: it's a seventy some thousand seat stadium and it's each
- 22:55Speaker 2: school got twenty thousand tickets, so that only leaves thirty
- 22:58Speaker 2: two thousand whatever tickets are on the secondary market. I
- 23:03Speaker 2: guess some people from Miami might have bought some of
- 23:05Speaker 2: them in advance because they knew the game was going to.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Be played there.
- 23:08Speaker 2: But as we've saw at Lucas Oil, as we saw
- 23:14Speaker 2: at the Rose Bowl, and as we absolutely saw at
- 23:16Speaker 2: the Peach Bowl, that there's a hunger for Indiana fans
- 23:23Speaker 2: to embrace this team and this moment and this journey
- 23:28Speaker 2: and I think there's gonna be a lot of au
- 23:30Speaker 2: fans who are going to be buying these three thousand
- 23:33Speaker 2: or four thousand dollars price tickets and being there because
- 23:35Speaker 2: they want to say they were there to see it happen.
- 23:37Speaker 2: So I'm gonna guess it's going to be pretty even
- 23:40Speaker 2: in terms of the fan representation. It's not going to
- 23:42Speaker 2: be a Miami home game in any way, shape or form.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Yeah, going back to what you said in the first
- 23:49Speaker 1: part of that last question, just about Ohio State gettingdo Mendoza.
- 23:53Speaker 1: If you remember back to the first drive I think
- 23:56Speaker 1: against Alabama, Alabama it seemed like they tried to do
- 24:01Speaker 1: the same thing. Obviously Indiana made the adjustment, but if
- 24:03Speaker 1: you remember that first drive against the Crimson Tin, I
- 24:06Speaker 1: think Mendoza was sacked at least maybe once or twice
- 24:09Speaker 1: on that opening drive. So do you think they're gonna
- 24:12Speaker 1: try to get because you can't just let him stand
- 24:16Speaker 1: back there obviously and pick you apart. So you're gonna
- 24:18Speaker 1: have to try to take something away. And you know,
- 24:20Speaker 1: maybe they have more confidence in their secondary guys to
- 24:24Speaker 1: make some plays on the ball. And because as good
- 24:27Speaker 1: as Mendoza has been in terms of his decision making.
- 24:29Speaker 1: There have been moments. I think it was the Iowa
- 24:32Speaker 1: game and the Oregon game.
- 24:33Speaker 3: On the road.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Both he did throw fourth quarter interceptions I believe in
- 24:36Speaker 1: both of those games and had to come back and
- 24:38Speaker 1: make a drive, so that that too will be interesting
- 24:41Speaker 1: to me.
- 24:42Speaker 3: You know.
- 24:42Speaker 2: The danger in that, though, is that to me, Mendoza's
- 24:47Speaker 2: number one quality is his intelligence, and I think he's
- 24:52Speaker 2: amazing at going up to the line of scrimmage in
- 24:56Speaker 2: knowing what defense he's facing and knowing where he can
- 25:01Speaker 2: take advantage of it. And if he gets in a
- 25:06Speaker 2: situation where he correctly reads a blitz and he knows
- 25:10Speaker 2: which receiver has an edge on the man who's covering him,
- 25:15Speaker 2: I've got tremendous belief that he'll take advantage of that
- 25:18Speaker 2: because he's done it so consistently this year. That's his
- 25:22Speaker 2: greatest attribute. I mean, you can just tell. You can
- 25:25Speaker 2: see the signs on the periphery of him learning his
- 25:28Speaker 2: degree from Callum two and a half years or whatever
- 25:30Speaker 2: it was, and the way he talks in the words
- 25:32Speaker 2: he uses on television. But he's a smart dude. And
- 25:35Speaker 2: Signette's talked about how much time he spends in the
- 25:39Speaker 2: film room, watching games and understanding what the opposing defense is,
- 25:43Speaker 2: and it shows up on the field that he doesn't
- 25:47Speaker 2: He's thrown those interceptions, but he doesn't make dumb plays
- 25:50Speaker 2: or foolish plays, and what we also we don't know
- 25:53Speaker 2: for sure, but he usually makes the correct read on
- 25:56Speaker 2: things in terms of where the ball should go. And
- 25:59Speaker 2: if he can do that for one more game, he'll
- 26:01Speaker 2: find over the course of the game, he'll find a
- 26:04Speaker 2: couple of spots to take advantage of that stuff. And
- 26:07Speaker 2: that's I think that's one of Indiana's big advantages.
- 26:11Speaker 1: No, I mean, that's the biggest compliment. I think there's
- 26:14Speaker 1: a ton of compliments you can give this team, but
- 26:16Speaker 1: this Indiana team over fifteen games, but they've they've never
- 26:20Speaker 1: they've never beaten themselves. Right, if you're gonna beat them,
- 26:23Speaker 1: you're gonna have to do something above you know, what
- 26:27Speaker 1: they're their level of play in order to beat them,
- 26:29Speaker 1: because they're they're not gonna make mistakes. As you mentioned that,
- 26:31Speaker 1: they're disciplined. They don't get a lot of penalties. And
- 26:34Speaker 1: the most recent example of the Oregon game, I mean,
- 26:37Speaker 1: for Oregon to come out and throw that pick six
- 26:40Speaker 1: to start the game, and then the other fumble that
- 26:41Speaker 1: Moore had where the running back kind of you know,
- 26:43Speaker 1: ran by we was trying to throw the ball and knocked.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Indiana doesn't do those kind of things. So if Miami
- 26:49Speaker 1: is going to stand a chance to win the game,
- 26:52Speaker 1: they're going to have to match Indiana's level of just
- 26:55Speaker 1: being having things buttoned up and playing you know, a
- 26:58Speaker 1: clean game. And who knows if they can do that
- 27:00Speaker 1: out of course of sixty minutes. I think Indiana in
- 27:02Speaker 1: a lot of ways. They can play a lot of
- 27:04Speaker 1: different ways. They can obviously have explosive plays, but they
- 27:08Speaker 1: can also you know, long sustained drives. It's not uncommon
- 27:13Speaker 1: to see them go twelve thirteen, fourteen plays down the
- 27:16Speaker 1: field and eat seven or eight minutes above the clock
- 27:18Speaker 1: using both the run in the past. So there's a
- 27:21Speaker 1: lot of That's what makes them such a great team
- 27:24Speaker 1: is that, you know, they don't make mistakes, and there's
- 27:27Speaker 1: a lot of different ways they can beat you. I'm
- 27:28Speaker 1: not sure you can say the same thing about Miami.
- 27:32Speaker 2: No, I don't know the numbers in terms of penalty
- 27:34Speaker 2: yards per game each one averages, but I'm sure Indiana's
- 27:37Speaker 2: is quite less and I'm sure they've made fewer turnovers,
- 27:39Speaker 2: and yeah, that's been the strength of this team. That's
- 27:43Speaker 2: the strength of this coaching staff, and that shows if
- 27:46Speaker 2: they are well coached. It's no accident that, you know,
- 27:51Speaker 2: the one coach that Signetti retained from Tom Allen's staff
- 27:55Speaker 2: was Bob Bostad, the offensive line coach, and the job
- 27:57Speaker 2: he's done, you know, I think he was there for
- 28:01Speaker 2: one year before Signetti got there, but the job he's
- 28:05Speaker 2: done building I use offensive line has been very impressive,
- 28:09Speaker 2: and now only this year.
- 28:10Speaker 3: I think the biggest.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Step forward they've taken on the offensive line is they've
- 28:15Speaker 2: got really seven guys. I mean they get they've got
- 28:18Speaker 2: a couple, they've dealt with injuries and Evans and Benson
- 28:21Speaker 2: and held up okay, And with seven guys, you can
- 28:24Speaker 2: shift around a little bit and keep guys a little
- 28:28Speaker 2: bit fresher for the most part, and I think that'll
- 28:32Speaker 2: be critical against Miami and just have to keep doing that.
- 28:36Speaker 2: There's always you never know, like I always think about
- 28:40Speaker 2: like who who who's reughing this game? I've seen the
- 28:43Speaker 2: name somewhere on some website, but like what conference are
- 28:46Speaker 2: they from and how are they gonna call the game
- 28:49Speaker 2: in terms of holding penalties or defensive pass interference penalties
- 28:54Speaker 2: or things like that. Those those kind of things Canna
- 28:56Speaker 2: can affect the game too, so that that'll be another factor.
- 29:01Speaker 1: The other thing, I'm just assuming Indiana is able to
- 29:04Speaker 1: finish the job and go to sixteen, And I'm really
- 29:06Speaker 1: interested to see just Signetti in the aftermath of this,
- 29:09Speaker 1: because it's been every game, you know, he's he's really
- 29:14Speaker 1: never he's shown he's shown some emotion, you know, I
- 29:17Speaker 1: think he did the whoo hoo hoosiers chin a couple
- 29:19Speaker 1: of the post game on field celebrations, but it's always
- 29:24Speaker 1: such a laser focus on the next thing that he
- 29:26Speaker 1: can't ever really get caught up in the moment. I'm
- 29:28Speaker 1: just curious to see if they are able to win,
- 29:31Speaker 1: what how he reflects on what he's just accomplished, and
- 29:35Speaker 1: if he kind of embraces, you know, what he's been
- 29:39Speaker 1: able to achieve, because you know, part of what makes
- 29:42Speaker 1: him great is staying in the moment and realizing, you know,
- 29:45Speaker 1: there's another task ahead. But if if you go sixteen
- 29:48Speaker 1: and oh and win the national Championship, it's gonna it'll
- 29:52Speaker 1: be an interesting response just to see how he addresses
- 29:56Speaker 1: that he's gonna have to soak up the moment and
- 29:58Speaker 1: enjoy it for there for at least a couple of days.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Oh, I think he'll embrace it a thousand percent. I
- 30:04Speaker 2: mean he's gotten a little bit looser every step of
- 30:06Speaker 2: the way. It was the rose Bolt where I think
- 30:09Speaker 2: he said, and make a hell of a movie right
- 30:12Speaker 2: in the last game. You know, for a long time
- 30:15Speaker 2: when he did the chance with the fans, he was like,
- 30:18Speaker 2: go Iu is what he said, and like it never
- 30:20Speaker 2: really caught on, and I think somebody finally told him,
- 30:23Speaker 2: you need to say who who Hoosiers?
- 30:24Speaker 3: And he said it.
- 30:26Speaker 2: You know, so he's he'll embrace it. He he I mean,
- 30:31Speaker 2: this guy, his story, as much as IU football is
- 30:34Speaker 2: an improbable story, he's an improbable story because he was
- 30:39Speaker 2: sixty two years old when he got this chance. I mean,
- 30:42Speaker 2: he was a he was gonna he was in a
- 30:46Speaker 2: career path to being a career assistant coach, and he
- 30:50Speaker 2: was so self confident that he could do better than
- 30:54Speaker 2: that that you know, people really don't grasp where he went.
- 30:58Speaker 2: He went to Indiana, Penn's Slovenia. I mean that would
- 31:01Speaker 2: be like going to you know Earlham or Anderson College,
- 31:06Speaker 2: and you know, and starting off there as a head
- 31:08Speaker 2: coach or DePaul or whatever. I mean, it's it's it's
- 31:12Speaker 2: improbable that he could. Then he went to Elon, then
- 31:15Speaker 2: he went to James Madison and and then the first
- 31:19Speaker 2: chance he gets to become a powerful coach is at
- 31:23Speaker 2: the worst program imaginable. I mean, that's nobody else was.
- 31:26Speaker 2: There was a lot of other jobs open that year.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Nobody else was talking to him, So at some point
- 31:31Speaker 2: it has to hit him and his whole you know,
- 31:34Speaker 2: psychology and central nervous system of what he did.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I mean, no, I think he I think he knows.
- 31:39Speaker 1: I'm just more curious to see him actually display it outward,
- 31:43Speaker 1: because you know.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I think he will. I think because the players will
- 31:45Speaker 3: make him.
- 31:47Speaker 2: The players will be, you know, a dog, and Scott
- 31:50Speaker 2: Dolson will be a dog and the assistant coach of staff.
- 31:53Speaker 2: And yeah, no, he he does get it, because that's
- 31:55Speaker 2: one of the most impressive things he did, in my opinion,
- 31:59Speaker 2: was after they beat Ohio State in the Big Ten
- 32:02Speaker 2: championship game, and I was listening to the postgame radio
- 32:06Speaker 2: with Fish because I'm I'm really happy for Don Fisher
- 32:09Speaker 2: he's getting to go through this because, like Bob Hamill,
- 32:12Speaker 2: these guys covered year after year after year after year
- 32:16Speaker 2: of disappointing and underachieving IU Football and Signetti took forever,
- 32:23Speaker 2: and they kept extending the postgame radio show, and he
- 32:26Speaker 2: finally came on with Fish for like five or ten minutes,
- 32:30Speaker 2: and one of the things he said was how happy
- 32:32Speaker 2: he was for Fish. So Signetti gets it, and I
- 32:35Speaker 2: think I think you'll see a lot of emotion from it.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I hope hopefully that's what we'll have to look
- 32:45Speaker 1: forward to on Monday. Does it feel weird for you
- 32:49Speaker 1: having such a big game like this that you would
- 32:51Speaker 1: usually be on the spot covering and not being there?
- 32:55Speaker 1: Is it a little bit?
- 32:59Speaker 3: A little bit? You know?
- 33:01Speaker 2: But I've watched It's the first time probably ever, I've
- 33:04Speaker 2: watched every game.
- 33:06Speaker 3: I mean, I haven't missed a game because I've been home.
- 33:08Speaker 3: I've watched them all on TV. Several of them. I've
- 33:11Speaker 3: watched more than once.
- 33:13Speaker 2: I've gone back and watched that drive in the Penn
- 33:15Speaker 2: Date game at least five times to see how they
- 33:17Speaker 2: did that. And as Signetti pointed out multiple times, and
- 33:22Speaker 2: some people forget the first play on the.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Drive was a sack.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Yeah, they got backed up.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Yeah they had to go eight. It was eighty seven
- 33:30Speaker 2: yards I think it was. It was I think it
- 33:33Speaker 2: was a seven yard sack and they did it, you know,
- 33:37Speaker 2: and they were mean.
- 33:39Speaker 1: The Iowa game, the fourth quarter, too, was another one
- 33:41Speaker 1: where it was in the balance where they they've had
- 33:44Speaker 1: so many moments the season where they've definitely if one
- 33:49Speaker 1: or two things didn't go their way, they could have
- 33:51Speaker 1: lost in the Iowa game. The same thing with an
- 33:53Speaker 1: Oregon game. Obviously they won that game by ten, but
- 33:55Speaker 1: there was some adversity in that game they've they've always
- 33:58Speaker 1: been able to overcome.
- 33:59Speaker 2: So to me, for Pivotal, the losing and the tradition
- 34:05Speaker 2: and the not believing is so thoroughly baked into me
- 34:10Speaker 2: that when I watched the first game of the year
- 34:13Speaker 2: against Old Dominion and the first play of the year,
- 34:16Speaker 2: the Old Dominion quarterback, I don't know if it was
- 34:18Speaker 2: a called run or he broke off on the play
- 34:21Speaker 2: and he ran right through the middle for like, I
- 34:23Speaker 2: don't know, sixty yards for a touchdown. And I remember
- 34:26Speaker 2: I texted my friend Ark Burke, who's he was at
- 34:30Speaker 2: IU when they went to the Rose Bowl in the
- 34:32Speaker 2: sixty seven to sixty eight season. It's like back to reality.
- 34:36Speaker 2: You know, Old Dominion scored because it was only two
- 34:39Speaker 2: years ago when they needed four overtimes to beat Akron.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I mean that Old Dominion game was
- 34:45Speaker 1: twenty seven to thirteen. I think a lot of people
- 34:46Speaker 1: thought this team's not going to be very good. There's
- 34:49Speaker 1: a running on our private community on inside the hall
- 34:53Speaker 1: we have. There was a guy we like to give
- 34:56Speaker 1: this thread still going on because it's been a running joke, Ballstez,
- 35:00Speaker 1: and he made a thread after the first or second
- 35:02Speaker 1: game about he wasn't sure that Mendoza was going to
- 35:04Speaker 1: start the whole season based on what he saw in
- 35:07Speaker 1: the first couple of games. And it's like now every
- 35:09Speaker 1: after every game after he wins the Highs and people
- 35:11Speaker 1: like you still think Mendoza is not going to start.
- 35:13Speaker 1: But it's not like this team came out of the
- 35:16Speaker 1: gate with a top five ranking or all these expectations.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Because I remember I was I was tracking the polar
- 35:24Speaker 1: in the season, doing a post every week on the
- 35:26Speaker 1: site about where they're moving. I remember they moved down
- 35:28Speaker 1: for a couple of weeks and it was like, oh,
- 35:30Speaker 1: you know, they've only beat Old Dominion twenty seven. They
- 35:33Speaker 1: had a closer game with Old Dominion than they did
- 35:36Speaker 1: Oregon and Alabama and several other teams.
- 35:39Speaker 3: And the Kansaw game was close for a while, I think.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Right right, Yeah, Indiana State they rushed obviously, but.
- 35:45Speaker 3: They blew Indiana stayed out and then Iowa was They
- 35:49Speaker 3: won by less than a touchdown, right, I think they.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Did, Yeah, less than a touchdown and a fourth and
- 35:54Speaker 1: iOS quarterback got hurt that fourth quarter, and you know,
- 35:57Speaker 1: in many ways, I talked to Tyler about this a
- 35:59Speaker 1: little bit yesterday. Iowa was a team that matched up
- 36:02Speaker 1: really well with them because they are to a lesser
- 36:07Speaker 1: extent obviously than Indiana, but they're another team that really
- 36:10Speaker 1: doesn't beat themselves. You have to beat them. And Mendoza
- 36:12Speaker 1: made the throws in that fourth quarter to get them
- 36:15Speaker 1: that drive and that game winning touchdown. But yeah, they
- 36:18Speaker 1: thrive off other people's mistakes, and they're not gonna If
- 36:22Speaker 1: you're waiting for them to blink and make a mistake,
- 36:24Speaker 1: you're gonna be waiting a long time because they've They've
- 36:26Speaker 1: done it fifteen games in a row. So we'll see
- 36:28Speaker 1: how it goes on Monday. I'm looking forward to watching it.
- 36:30Speaker 1: We'll have Josh Po's of Inside the Hall, he's actually
- 36:32Speaker 1: flying down today. Jamie Owens from Inside the Hall is
- 36:36Speaker 1: also making the trip down to take photos from the sidelines,
- 36:41Speaker 1: and so we'll have coverage all weekend and leading into
- 36:44Speaker 1: next week on the site as well. Obviously a basketball
- 36:47Speaker 1: game as well, but all eyes on football for now.
- 36:49Speaker 1: With the Indiana fan based understandable. What a run happy
- 36:53Speaker 1: for you, someone who's followed IU football as long as
- 36:57Speaker 1: you had watched a lot of bad football, for all
- 37:00Speaker 1: the other fans who've stuck with this program for such
- 37:03Speaker 1: a long time. And hopefully the Hoosiers are able to
- 37:06Speaker 1: go down there, take care of business and win their
- 37:08Speaker 1: first national championship, it'd be quite the story.
- 37:11Speaker 3: Uh, it's be incomprehensible. It is the word I've used
- 37:15Speaker 3: with everybody. It's incomprehensible.
- 37:17Speaker 2: And I know IU fans pretty much any generation, and
- 37:22Speaker 2: they all have stories about AU football of you know,
- 37:25Speaker 2: going to the tailgates but not going to the games,
- 37:27Speaker 2: leaving at halftime, being there, when being there when you
- 37:32Speaker 2: know they played Michigan in overtime and thought they were
- 37:35Speaker 2: going to win, but they couldn't if I mentioned the
- 37:37Speaker 2: Anthony Carter game. People who watched IU football remember what
- 37:42Speaker 2: I'm talking about. And it's it's just.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I went to saw him as a student when I
- 37:48Speaker 1: was there for a couple of falls, and it was
- 37:51Speaker 1: no atmosphere, not much to write home about. People were
- 37:55Speaker 1: after the first quarter or second quarter heading back over
- 37:57Speaker 1: to the tailgate lots.
- 37:59Speaker 2: I mean, he wrote about it in the story he
- 38:01Speaker 2: wrote when he quoted me that I My thing was,
- 38:04Speaker 2: I'd usually go to games and by mid October they'd
- 38:08Speaker 2: be like two and three and they'd make a bad
- 38:09Speaker 2: play and the game was over, and I'd go like this, like,
- 38:13Speaker 2: I mean, we're turning over to basketball season now football
- 38:16Speaker 2: season's over, and not anymore. It's there. They're real. There's nothing,
- 38:23Speaker 2: there's nothing fluky about this. Not one of their wins
- 38:25Speaker 2: has been a fluke, not by they weren't given a
- 38:29Speaker 2: gift by the refs, they didn't make a trick play.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Every win that they've gotten has been earned, and that's
- 38:36Speaker 2: a tremendous that's a credit to it. Just amazing coaching job,
- 38:40Speaker 2: that's what it is.
- 38:41Speaker 1: I think it's so inexplicable to some people too. It's
- 38:43Speaker 1: just like they're trying to figure out ways like how
- 38:45Speaker 1: this happened. And I even saw a story mentioned this,
- 38:48Speaker 1: I think with Tyler yesterday a couple of months ago
- 38:51Speaker 1: on ESPN, like trying to find the programs, trying to
- 38:53Speaker 1: find the next Kurt Signetti. I'm like, there's not another
- 38:55Speaker 1: Kurt Signetti. You can keep trying to look, but there's
- 38:58Speaker 1: not another one. I mean, you can to hire a
- 39:00Speaker 1: great coach. But this is again when he said, you know,
- 39:04Speaker 1: it would make a great movie. It could very well
- 39:07Speaker 1: make a really good movie someday. It'll be interesting to
- 39:09Speaker 1: see how that all goes about. And again, more than anything,
- 39:13Speaker 1: you hope they finished a job. Just so there's not
- 39:15Speaker 1: one thing that anybody can say about the season to
- 39:18Speaker 1: go sixteen and no, I think they'd be the first
- 39:19Speaker 1: team in college football since Yale in eighteen ninety four.
- 39:23Speaker 1: And I'm I'm not sure Yale was playing the schedule
- 39:26Speaker 1: Indiana was to go unbeaten, So it'll be quite the accomplishment.
- 39:30Speaker 2: No, it'd be I don't know when they start ordering
- 39:34Speaker 2: the statues or whatever, but yeah, it's I'm sure they'll
- 39:39Speaker 2: have I would think win or lose that they're probably
- 39:42Speaker 2: gonna have some kind of public celebration in Memorial Stadium.
- 39:45Speaker 2: I think probably, I would think it.
- 39:47Speaker 1: When they need to have a parade through Bloomington, it could.
- 39:51Speaker 2: I imagine they'll have a big celebration of Memorial Stadium
- 39:55Speaker 2: the following weekend. That'd be my guests inside the stadium.
- 40:00Speaker 2: That's what they need to do and win or lose.
- 40:01Speaker 2: I think they'll do that.
- 40:02Speaker 1: But you know, I need to bring the football team
- 40:05Speaker 1: out to the center court during time out to the
- 40:08Speaker 1: basketball games game. It's some atmosphere in the building.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yeah, have Mindoza bring out his heisman or whatever. Yeah,
- 40:16Speaker 2: they need to basketball. Both basketball teams could use the
- 40:20Speaker 2: help for sure.
- 40:21Speaker 1: All right, well, thanks thanks for taking the time. Enjoy
- 40:24Speaker 1: the game on Monday, and we'll be back next week
- 40:27Speaker 1: at some point, either recapping a national championship win or
- 40:31Speaker 1: talking about hopefully not talking about a loss, but either
- 40:35Speaker 1: way we'll have you covered. Thanks everybody, as always for
