Transcript
- 0:04Welcome to the USA Cabinet Store podcast. I'm
- 0:07Chris, and today we are talking cabinet door
- 0:10styles, but not the way most articles talk about
- 0:13them. Because if you specify kitchens for a living,
- 0:17this is not really a taste question. Jessica,
- 0:21you have been through the showroom data on this
- 0:23one. I have, and that reframe is the whole thing.
- 0:26The pretty photos answer a question contractors
- 0:29are not actually asking. What they need to know
- 0:32is what their supplier can deliver on their timeline,
- 0:35what survives 10 years in a family kitchen, and
- 0:37what the homeowner still likes when they go to
- 0:39sell. Those are three different questions. Most
- 0:43trend coverage answers none of them. Okay, so
- 0:45let's start at the bottom. How many cabinet door
- 0:47styles are there, really? Three. That is it.
- 0:51Strip away the marketing names and every door
- 0:53is defined by what the center panel does. A slab
- 0:56has no center panel at all, just one flat face.
- 1:00A recessed panel sets it behind the frame and
- 1:02that is what a shaker is. A raised panel steps
- 1:06it outward. Everything else is a variation. Slim
- 1:09shaker is a recessed panel with narrower rails.
- 1:13Fluted is a slab with milling. Glass is a frame
- 1:16with the panel taken out. Once you see that,
- 1:20every catalog gets easier to read. And there
- 1:23is a second thing worth separating because it
- 1:25causes most of the change orders. Construction
- 1:28is the box, framed or frameless. Overlay is how
- 1:32the door sits, full, partial, or inset. Profile
- 1:36is the face of the door. You can put almost any
- 1:39profile on almost any box. Say more on inset
- 1:42because clients ask for that by look rather than
- 1:45by name. They do. And it is worth being blunt
- 1:48with them. Inset is an installation method, not
- 1:51a door style. and it is the most expensive way
- 1:54to hang a cabinet door. The tolerances are tighter,
- 1:58the face frame has to be dead square, and any
- 2:00seasonal movement in the door shows immediately
- 2:02as an uneven gap. Never assume a client asking
- 2:05for the flush look understands the premium. All
- 2:08right, the profiles themselves. What is actually
- 2:10winning right now? Flat slab, clearly. In the
- 2:14NKBA 2026 Kitchen Trends Report, which surveyed
- 2:18634 North American kitchen and bath professionals,
- 2:2369 % named flat slab a growing style. That is
- 2:27the strongest single directional number in the
- 2:29data set. And it makes sense once you look at
- 2:31what is happening with appliances. That same
- 2:34survey found 72 % of professionals specifying
- 2:37panel -faced refrigeration and 85 % panel -faced
- 2:41dishwashers. Once the appliances disappear behind
- 2:44matching fronts, slab is the profile that lets
- 2:47an entire wall read as one continuous surface.
- 2:50If a client wants integrated appliances, the
- 2:53door choice is close to made for you. And the
- 2:55catch? Install tolerance. With no frame line
- 2:59to break up the elevation, an uneven reveal reads
- 3:02across the whole run. Budget the alignment time
- 3:05or price it in. And on the build side, the edge
- 3:08banding, not the face, is what decides whether
- 3:10that door survives a decade. Run your thumb around
- 3:13every sample edge before you commit an order.
- 3:16Then there is shaker, which everyone keeps telling
- 3:18me is dying. It is not dying. It is getting narrower.
- 3:22Traditional shaker frames run roughly two and
- 3:24a quarter to three inches. Slim versions bring
- 3:27that down to about two to two and a half. And
- 3:30here is the part almost nobody publishes. There
- 3:33is a hard floor on how narrow a style can go,
- 3:36and it is set by hardware, not by taste. A standard
- 3:40concealed European hinge cup needs enough style
- 3:43width to sit behind it. At around two inches,
- 3:45you run out of material to cover it. So the articles
- 3:48telling you to specify half -inch rails are describing
- 3:50what, exactly? A showroom sample. Not a hinged
- 3:54door on a working kitchen. So we went and read
- 3:57what cabinet shops say to each other rather than
- 3:59what trend reports say to homeowners. On the
- 4:02cabinetry forum, asked directly about rail and
- 4:05style dimensions for shaker doors, the shop consensus
- 4:09lands between two and a quarter and two and five
- 4:11eighths inches. One comment put it plainly, two
- 4:15inches isn't enough for a Euro hinge to cover.
- 4:18Another said, two and a half for shaker, knobs
- 4:21looked lost at three inches. Our advice is to
- 4:24specify in the two and a quarter to two and a
- 4:26half range and let the finish do the modernizing,
- 4:29rather than chasing the narrowest rail on the
- 4:31sample board. Which brings us to finish. And
- 4:34I think this is the actual story of the last
- 4:35two years. It is, and it is bigger than any profile
- 4:39shift. Wood grain has overtaken paint. NKBA has
- 4:4359 % of professionals calling wood grain a growing
- 4:46finish, with white oak the top species at 51%.
- 4:50Howe's found wood cabinetry reached 29 % of renovating
- 4:54homeowners against white at 28%. That is the
- 4:58first time wood has edged ahead. And when one
- 5:01survey puts a single species at 51%, that is
- 5:04not a vague wood is popular signal. That is a
- 5:07stocking instruction. And gray, clients still
- 5:10ask. Gray is finished, but the answer is not
- 5:12white, which is what everyone assumes. Cool gray
- 5:16is being replaced by grayage, taupe, and mushroom
- 5:19on the neutral side. and by sage and olive where
- 5:22the client wants color. Howes has rust up 178%,
- 5:27chocolate brown up 153%, mushroom up 69%, olive
- 5:32up 57%. The common thread is a neutral with warmth
- 5:37underneath it rather than blue. And that is exactly
- 5:40why Whiteshaker has not gone anywhere while looking
- 5:42noticeably different than it did five years ago.
- 5:46The profile survived. The white changed. A warm,
- 5:50creamy white on a narrower rail still sells constantly.
- 5:54The same door in a blue undertone white is the
- 5:56one that now reads dated, and clients usually
- 5:59cannot articulate why. What about the fun stuff?
- 6:02Fluting, reeded glass? Accent only. One island,
- 6:05one pantry, one bank of uppers. Never the whole
- 6:09run. The appetite for texture is real. Hoos has
- 6:13searches for sandstone up 257 % and Venetian
- 6:17plaster up 94%. But wall -to -wall fluting is
- 6:20the detail most likely to be regretted, and we
- 6:23expect it to be the clearest that was the mid
- 6:25-2020s marker a decade from now. Sell it as jewelry,
- 6:29not as the outfit. And on glass, two things.
- 6:32Specify safety glass and rate the hinges for
- 6:35the added weight. Underrated hinges on glass
- 6:38doors are a predictable failure and a completely
- 6:41avoidable callback. Let's talk 2027. What should
- 6:44people be expecting? I want to be careful here,
- 6:46because anyone publishing precise 2027 percentages
- 6:49is inventing them. That data does not exist yet.
- 6:53The full NKBA 2027 report has not been released.
- 6:58What we have from High Point Market is thematic,
- 7:01bold color, the purpose -built kitchen, and lighting
- 7:04treated as the most powerful design tool. So
- 7:07everything I am about to say is our projection
- 7:09from those signals. and our own order book. It
- 7:12is reasoning, not research. And I would rather
- 7:15say that than dress a guess up as data. Understood.
- 7:18Go ahead. We expect color to move onto the cabinet
- 7:21itself. For years, bold color lived in the backsplash
- 7:25and the accessories, where it was cheap to change.
- 7:28We expect it on islands, pantries, and bar runs
- 7:31well before it touches perimeter cabinets. We
- 7:34expect warm to keep deepening rather than reverse.
- 7:38Sherwin -Williams published a 2027 forecast called
- 7:41Rewild, built on mosses, clays, and mineral blues,
- 7:45which extends the warm, earthy direction rather
- 7:48than correcting it. And worth saying plainly,
- 7:51as of right now, neither Benjamin Moore nor Pantone
- 7:54has released a 2027 color of the year. If you
- 7:58see an article claiming otherwise, be suspicious
- 8:00of the source. The profile a contractor can put
- 8:10in a client's kitchen next month usually wins
- 8:12over the profile they have to wait 11 weeks for.
- 8:15And that is going to bite harder as more of the
- 8:17interesting work moves toward textured and machined
- 8:19fronts with longer lead times. His advice is
- 8:22to build your standard offer out of what is stocked
- 8:25and treat the special order door as the upgrade
- 8:27you sell deliberately, not the default you get
- 8:30talked into. On the numbers, and these are supplier
- 8:33snapshots we checked in September 2026, so confirm
- 8:37against your own supplier. Stocked RTA is same
- 8:41day to about four weeks. Semi -custom, four to
- 8:44nine plus. Custom, six to 16. Imported European,
- 8:5011 to 14. That last one you plan around from
- 8:54day one. It is not a mid -project change of mind.
- 8:58Give me the takeaways. Three. Spec Slim Shaker
- 9:01and Flat Slab with Confidence. Between them,
- 9:05they cover most of what walks through the door,
- 9:07and neither is a resale risk. Use fluted, reeded,
- 9:11and glass as accent only. And the stocking call.
- 9:15Woodgrain now outsells paint, and warm neutrals
- 9:17have replaced cool gray, so stock accordingly
- 9:20or you will be reordering. One more from Emin,
- 9:24because it is the most practical thing in the
- 9:26piece. When a client wants a bold cabinet color,
- 9:29put it somewhere replaceable. An island, a pantry
- 9:32run, a bar. Then the kitchen has personality
- 9:36and the client has an exit if they tire of it
- 9:38in four years. That is a good place to stop.
- 9:42The full guide is on our site written by Helen
- 9:44Yassar out of our Fairfax showroom and reviewed
- 9:47by Emin Halleck. It has the full contractor spec
- 9:50comparison, the lead timetable, and a 12 question
- 9:54FAQ. Thanks for listening. Bring measurements,
- 9:58leave with real samples. See you next time.
