- 0:07On October 1, 1954, the New York Giants faced the Cleveland Indians at Cleveland Stadium for Game 3 of the 1954 World Series.
- 0:16The Giants led the best of seven series, two games to none, and this is the mutual radio broadcast of Game 3 featuring announcers Al Helfer and Jimmy Dudley.
- 0:25Good afternoon, fans. And it's really a pleasure to have Al Rosen, all the capable third-best men of the Cleveland Indians, on our direct program this afternoon.
- 0:34Al, they told me you're not going to play this afternoon.
- 0:36That's right, Frankie. Due to this thigh injury of mine, my right leg has been acting up quite bad. You remember seeing me run.
- 0:43And we feel that possibly I'll be of more value to the team in a 10-centers role or even playing in the later innings of a ball game if necessary.
- 0:50And certainly I can't help the ball club by trying to go all the way.
- 0:54Well, I know you would help it if you were in then. Now look, Al, what happened in these last two games from a player's viewpoint?
- 1:01Well, strictly from a player's viewpoint, we feel that one base hit in either ball game or even a fly ball in either ball game, the game might have gone the other way.
- 1:10We ran into Magnuson Fitching, a terrific defensive ball club.
- 1:15Even though I must say for our own sector, I think our pitches were as good as anything we saw from the Giants.
- 1:21We just didn't get the runs that the Giants did. They capitalized more on opportunities than we did.
- 1:25That's right. Winn-Picchi-Cellippi came yesterday. How about that little Adam Ali?
- 1:29Johnny has come a long way since I saw him this spring, and he certainly deserves the reputation we've received, that we've heard about him.
- 1:38Johnny certainly is one of the finer left-handers in the game. He's certainly as good as anything we've seen in our league.
- 1:42Did you hit against him in the All-Star game?
- 1:44Yes, I did.
- 1:45How'd you do?
- 1:46Well, I think John had a bad day, and by the grace of God...
- 1:51I hate him then. You hit two home runs in the All-Star game. Did you hit him all the time?
- 1:57I did.
- 1:58Now, what happened yesterday with the man on second base?
- 2:00Well, I think Johnny was just a better pitcher yesterday. Maybe I was a worse hitter. I don't know.
- 2:05But Johnny fooled me yesterday. I certainly wasn't looking for a fast ball with the man on second base.
- 2:10Al, didn't he throw you two fast balls?
- 2:12Yes, he did. He got one up around my letter, which I think is my long ball, the fast ball up, and then he got another one right down around my knees, and I should have been swinging Frank.
- 2:22Al, you know we've been hearing so much about playing in a certain ballpark. Do you think a ballpark makes any difference?
- 2:29No, I really don't. I think that sometimes a ballpark looks funny to you when you first walk in it, but most fellows have been around a big league for a few years.
- 2:36They've managed to see most of the ballpark. Now, our club has seen the polo grounds. We've played numerous exhibition games there at the end of our spring training season.
- 2:45So, actually, there's no advantage, I don't believe, to any pitcher working in a certain ballpark or any hitter having to hit against a certain wall in a ballpark.
- 2:55Well, it's certainly been a terrific series so far. I know Propeller, in my case, has been in as many world series games.
- 3:01Al, I've been getting a terrific thrill out of this thing. Say Al, I've got a little gift here for you, and it's a new Gillette one-piece razor set.
- 3:10And in the back here is the 1954 World Series record book. I know you'll enjoy that. And just stick around with me for a minute, will you?
- 3:18I want the fans to look for this Gillette display at your favorite store. You will find this big little book filled with baseball bats, and they've got the diagrams of all the ballparks.
- 3:30All the major league ballparks. Now, here's the Cleveland Stadium. Seats 73,500. That's quite a stadium. The seating section and everything is right in there.
- 3:39And you've got 112 pages of real dope on World Series history. And then we turn back here, Al, this is important.
- 3:47I think this is a great little thing in this book. Hands-on winning baseball. And then you've got batting.
- 3:53You know, it's good for little leaguers, good for semi-professional ballplayers, college ballplayers. In fact, I'm going to kick out of reading it.
- 3:58It's got face running, peeling, pitching, and the foil rockers of all clubs. And I hope the fans will get this quick.
- 4:07Last year a lot of fans waited a little too long, and thousands of fans missed out. So I hope they'll bear down this year and get them soon.
- 4:14Al, Rosen, lots of luck to you. And I hope that leg comes along, because fans, here's a great guy on the field and off the field. Thanks for being on our program.
- 4:22Lots of luck to you. And our next guest will be a young fellow that did a courageous job yesterday.
- 4:29I admire this young guy. He walked out his first World Series game. Johnny Antonelli.
- 4:36How old are you now, John?
- 4:38Twenty-four, Frank.
- 4:39Twenty-four.
- 4:40Now I want to ask you one question. I felt for you in that first inning yesterday with the three men on.
- 4:46What did Leo say when he walked out of the mound? Were you nervous?
- 4:49No, I don't think I was nervous. I believe I was trying to be.
- 4:52Well, I would have been out there.
- 4:54But I mean, he just tried to calm me down, I believe. He didn't actually say much about the game. He just came out there to talk to me, and that was it.
- 5:02Dave, in the last inning you had a man on 13th third. One out.
- 5:08Thanks.
- 5:09What were you aspiring to pick worse?
- 5:12Mostly fastballs at that time, Frank.
- 5:15That's when you did a...let me brag about you a little. I know you don't care about it too much.
- 5:20But for a young guy, 23, 24 years old, pitching his first World Series game, this kid, the ninth inning, the Giants leading 3-1, did a terrific job to count 3-2.
- 5:30Right. I think he fell off about five or six pitches.
- 5:33Five or six pitches, and still you didn't walk.
- 5:35Right.
- 5:36What about the double play ball? The ball that Regaldo...wasn't that the fellow Rudy Regaldo hit the ball with the shortstop, John?
- 5:42Yes.
- 5:43Were you ready to go to the clubhouse in that place?
- 5:45Actually, I thought we had it, and I was jumping up and down if you had seen me, but I guess I was set to walk on that one.
- 5:52Say, John, where's your home?
- 5:53Right now I'm living in Weston, Massachusetts.
- 5:55Oh, right outside of Boston?
- 5:56That's right, about 12 miles.
- 5:58You're married, aren't you?
- 5:59Yes, I am.
- 6:00And how about the little youngsters?
- 6:01I've got a little daughter, one year old.
- 6:04And how about Papa and Mama? Are they here?
- 6:06Yes, my father and mother are here at Cleveland, right now.
- 6:09Boy, I bet they got a kick out of that baby yesterday, didn't they?
- 6:11They certainly did.
- 6:12Well, John, you're a good kid. You know, I had on my baseball all summer long 25 wins, and you owe me a couple of Coca-Cola's.
- 6:20You know that, don't you?
- 6:21But look, here's a Gillette Razor, and that little World Series record book, I know you'll like it.
- 6:29I want you to take that little Gillette one-piece razor and a 1954 World Series record book, and you can get your copy at your favorite store.
- 6:37And John, I know you'll get a kick out of that.
- 6:39Thank you very much, Frank.
- 6:40I can certainly use that.
- 6:43There's a lot of good stuff in there.
- 6:45When are you going to pick again?
- 6:47I don't know, Frank. If he needs me Sunday, I'll be ready to pick it now, probably Monday.
- 6:51Fine, lots of luck to you.
- 6:52Okay.
- 6:53Well, fans, the clock says it's time to go until we take you back to Gillette's Broadcasting booth.
- 6:59And now, fans, this is your Philly, Jimmy Dudley.
- 7:01Back to you at New Trolls Readyware booth, and we're ready for today's third game of the 1954 World Series.
- 7:07This broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the Commission of Baseball,
- 7:11sold for the entertainment of our audience.
- 7:13And now, ladies and gentlemen, our national anthem.
- 7:16Oh, can you see by the dawn's early light What the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting In the air, the bombs bursting
- 7:38Through the land, the land of the free, The land of the free, the land of the free
- 7:51And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting In the air, the land of the free, The land of the free
- 8:19And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting
- 8:35Any publication we broadcast to have a use of the description,
- 8:40down the counts of this game, without the exception of the Commissioner, is prohibited.
- 8:44And now turning you over to, just before turning you over to our helpers,
- 8:49here are the lineup for today's game.
- 8:51For the Giants, at first base leading off, Whitey Lockman, at shortstop, Alvin Duff, John Mueller, right field,
- 8:59Willie May, center field, Hank Thompson, third base,
- 9:05Monty Ervin, left field, Baby Williams, second base, Wes Westrom, catching, and Ruben Gomez, the pitcher.
- 9:14He's won 17 in last nine during the regular season.
- 9:17For the Cruze Indians, the home team, leading off, Al Smith, left field,
- 9:23Bobby Avila, second base, Larry Dobie, center field, Rick Wirtz, first base, Hank Madeski, third base,
- 9:35Dave Philly, right field, George Strickland, shortstop, Jim Hegan, catching, and Mike Garcia, the pitcher.
- 9:43Garcia, during the regular season, won 19 in last eight.
- 9:47The umpires for the third game of the 1954 World Series, falling the balls and strikes back to the play, there's Jaco Conlon.
- 9:54At first base, Hegan, second base, Al Barlett, third base, Charlie Berge.
- 9:59On the right field foul line is Ron Warnocky, on the left field foul line is Larry Ness.
- 10:03Now the Indians have taken the playing field, and today's game is ready to get underway.
- 10:07And here is the man who will get today's game underway for us,
- 10:10this was Al Helfer, big Al coming in.
- 10:13Thank you very much, Jimmy Deadley, hi everybody, and we're very happy to say that this speaker,
- 10:18Bill Gray Eagle, is here in person, he's gotten over his illness, and he's showing out the first ball here this afternoon.
- 10:24And this speaker throws the first ball out to Jim Hegan, the starting catcher for the Cleveland Indians,
- 10:28and prior to getting started on this game here this afternoon, we have right now, 10 seconds for our four-station identification.
- 10:36This is mutual, the radio network for all Americans.
- 10:40This is WGN, this is World Fair Station in Chicago.
- 10:44And now the business in hand here at the vast municipal stadium in Cleveland, Ohio,
- 10:55where this afternoon Al Lopez is sending a patched-up lineup to meet the New York Giants,
- 10:59who have won two of the two games already played in the 1954 Classic.
- 11:03At third base we have Hank Fagetsky, as Jimmy Deadley has already told you.
- 11:07Hank Fagetsky, one of the veterans of Major League play, taking over for Al Rosen.
- 11:11Al tried it, his leg was too bad, and he figured that he was in there hurting his ball club rather than helping it.
- 11:16So he and Al Lopez got together.
- 11:18And Al Rosen is on the bench this afternoon and will be utilized as a pinch hitter if needed.
- 11:22Hank Fagetsky is at third base.
- 11:24So let's set the Indians for you defensively now.
- 11:26As Big Mike Garcia, the vice-salely right-hander, is on the mound for the Cleveland Indians.
- 11:30Old Val Jess is throwing down to his battery mate, Jim Hegan.
- 11:33At first base is Victor Wirtz, at second base, Bobby Avila.
- 11:36At shortstop, George Dickens.
- 11:38At third base, Hank Fagetsky.
- 11:40Out in left field is Al Smith.
- 11:41For center fielder is Laurie Dobie.
- 11:43And at right field here this afternoon is Dave Philly, the kid from Texas.
- 11:46And stepping up to the plate is the first hitter here for the New York Giants, batting at 1-1-1 in the series, 1-9, is Whitey Luchman.
- 11:54Whitey Luchman hitting left hand, standing deep at the plate.
- 11:57Now a broad-crossing spot here at Cleveland, who's very fine.
- 11:59We're right behind home plate, just slightly off on the left-hand side of home plate.
- 12:03Yoko Conlon, the plate umpire, looks down over the shoulder of Jim Hegan.
- 12:07And we're about to get started on the third game of the 1954 World Series.
- 12:11Please remember the Giants have won two, and Cleveland has one run.
- 12:15So this is the game, as far as Cleveland is concerned.
- 12:18Big night, right field, the little fastball, Whitey Luchman swings on, there's a line drive in the right center field.
- 12:22It's going to be in there for the base hit.
- 12:23Over is Philly to cut it off.
- 12:24Luchman down the first base to hold on.
- 12:26So the first hit here this afternoon is a long shot single in the right center field by Whitey Luchman.
- 12:32That is the first hit given up by Garth Thayer, who surrendered only 220 base hits all year.
- 12:38Now coming up to the plate batting at 375 is Alvin Dark.
- 12:42He has three for eight in the series so far.
- 12:47Out to a plate from just about straight away.
- 12:49This is a big ball orchard here, 320 feet down the left and right field line,
- 12:53to 410 feet to the restraining tension center.
- 12:57A plenty of room to go get them here in this ballpark.
- 13:02Mike Garth Thayer, the big right-hander from Vitellia, kicks.
- 13:07Third around the mound, looks down at Alvin Dark, who has that wide, straight eagle stance leaning over.
- 13:11Whitey Luchman leads off first down comes a pitch fastball fired in at the knee for a called strike.
- 13:16When Big Mike is right, that fastball of his comes zipping in there.
- 13:19Hank Majewski, expecting a bunt, is throwing a shallow fur.
- 13:22And Bickford, holding Whitey Luchman on the third base, will come charging in when the next pitch is made.
- 13:27They're expecting that the New York Giants will try to get that runner down in scoring position.
- 13:31Whitey Luchman is pretty fast and he's liable to be moving anytime.
- 13:34The pitch is made and this time it's flung on.
- 13:36Alvin Dark hits a foul ball down off the first base line, back into the crowd, out of play.
- 13:40Hank Majewski, number five, moving back there to take a station third.
- 13:43It's been a long time since we've seen Hank Majewski start a ball game, but he's always on tap and ready.
- 13:48You know, I've got an interesting note on Hank Majewski for you here in just a moment and I'll pass it along to you.
- 13:54Like I say, a Texas runner over at first base, that's Whitey Luchman taking a pretty good five lead.
- 13:58Bickford's on the inside corner.
- 14:00We'll look at Alvin Dark now, the pitch is thrown and the swing on.
- 14:02A pretty good hitting run, man trying to punch the right knee and fouls it off again and that's strike two.
- 14:07Hank Majewski, the oldest player among all of today's World Series eligible, is playing a third base for Cleveland.
- 14:14He'll be 38 next December the 13th. Now you'll find the ages, the heights, the weights, and the records of all the
- 14:20first players in the collect World Series books, hope you have yours.
- 14:24Next pitch to play the swing on by Alvin Dark and this is called strike three.
- 14:28That's the first time Alvin Dark has struck out in the World Series, but he strikes out here for big Mike Garcia.
- 14:34Mike Garcia had 130 strikeouts over the course of the regular season.
- 14:39Here's John Mueller, the touchy guy at the plate, nice performance from the standpoint as he's playing that base hit for you.
- 14:45When you're muted the most, John Mueller has two for nine in the series batting a 222, has struck out only one time.
- 14:53Whitey Luchman, who opened with a line shot single into right center field, is still on the first base for the Giants.
- 14:58Mike Garcia has to bear down from the opening pitch.
- 15:01He's ready to go here to the left hand of batting John Mueller, the choke hitter.
- 15:04In comes the first pitch, nice back ball over to him, the first ball strike.
- 15:08Big Mike when he throws is a little off balance, that is when he finishes up he falls toward first base.
- 15:14When he started out in the spring this year he tried to correct that and finish up in a square away position in order,
- 15:20but he may see in front of balls and balls that were hit back to his right, the left of the pitchers mounted will look out from the diamond.
- 15:26But he found that he was not as effective with his pitches so he went back to his old style.
- 15:30He delivers now, pass ball, swing on, hit down off the rubber, a home play to hide down to the availer.
- 15:34The play goes to Stickland for one to throw back, it's gotten time, gets away from Bigfoot,
- 15:38Heaghan is backing up, there goes Mueller trying to check and the throw goes down and he's in there.
- 15:44The throw got away from Nick DeWitt who had to reach for it, it was a hurried throw by George Stickland.
- 15:49And we'll probably have an error charge on the play.
- 15:52So we'll wait for the official score as Mr. MacCarrie and Mr. George and Mr. Caminto to see what their decision is going to do on this one.
- 15:58They're going to go from first down to second. There's going to be an error on George Stickland.
- 16:04So puts John Mueller on at second base on the error, committed by George Stickland on his over throw at first base trying to get a double play.
- 16:13And incidentally we have not had a double play in the World Series up till now.
- 16:19So Mueller will get first on the fourth out of Wiley-Laxman at second base.
- 16:25They went from Avila to Stickland so we have two outs, one on and Willie Mays coming up.
- 16:29We'll get together base at the series.
- 16:31Starkey opposing the fastball and brushes the uniform drive the batter away from the plate, that's ball one.
- 16:37Willie Mays in this series so far has walked three times, he struck out once.
- 16:41He has gone 0 for 5, no hits for 5 official times up.
- 16:46Mays the right handed batter, what a ball hop and the National League Batting Champions.
- 16:53That's away from the plate now, he's down here one ball and no strikes.
- 16:59Up until just this moment when George Stickland committed the error, the throwing error at first base allowing John Mueller to scoot on down to second.
- 17:05The Cleveland Indians were absolutely errorless in the World Series.
- 17:10That's it, Texas running with second, delivers a play to soft curve ball, it's one run by Mays and punches back foul right off the right of our Gillette microphone bouncing up near the first section and bounces down into the television camera.
- 17:23Somebody goes home over there on that camera crew, very happily this afternoon with a souvenir of the World Series.
- 17:29There are two outs here in the top of the first inning, John Mueller is running with second base for the New York Giants.
- 17:35There is no sore here with Leighton overcast skies, sucking the four rings down on us any minute.
- 17:40The bits of the plate are high and inside to Willie Mays.
- 17:44It's now to two balls and one strike.
- 17:46We've got more airplanes flying over this municipal stadium here this afternoon that even Jimmy Dudley, an old pilot himself, can shake a stick at.
- 17:55But he's flying high right here in the broadcast and he doesn't have to be in that plane this afternoon.
- 18:00Jimmy invited me to take a plane ride with him and I said, now what's the simmer down after the series is over, we'll do it.
- 18:06Willie Mays up at the plate with the count of one ball and two strikes.
- 18:09Big Mike Garcia as the winner on his second behind him, there are two outs for the Giants here in the top half of the first inning.
- 18:16There is no sore.
- 18:17Outfield playing fans around the left and deep as Mike Garcia throws the overhand fastball.
- 18:21Mays swings and doesn't get it.
- 18:23That's strike two.
- 18:26The Vice-Valiant right-hander came right back and tore that ball in over the fifth from the inside corner.
- 18:30Mays liked it.
- 18:32Two balls and two strikes.
- 18:33Now on number 24, Willie Mays.
- 18:38Jockel Conlon handling the plate here this afternoon in the third game of the World Series.
- 18:44Down comes the pitch to Mays.
- 18:45Fastball coming on.
- 18:46Hit the right field.
- 18:47The Crandreau.
- 18:48When he comes in, he cuts the ball.
- 18:49It bounces off his chest.
- 18:50He goes to second base as Wheeler comes on in to score.
- 18:52So Willie Mays gets his first thing hit.
- 18:56Willie Mays, the single in the right field, driving the run here.
- 18:58And the Giants lead one to nothing.
- 19:01John Mueller shooting around and coming on in from second base to score.
- 19:05So the air is up and he has hurt right up until now.
- 19:09That's the second hit of Mike Garcia and run number one.
- 19:15So Cleveland's behind here in the top half of the first inning.
- 19:17The Giants have a runner on the first base and Willie Mays, a pretty good hit-and-run guy.
- 19:21Up at the third, a pretty good hit-and-run guy with a stick in his hand is Henry Thompson.
- 19:26He's batting a 333 in the series, two for six.
- 19:29And Eastlake spectacularly appeared defensively.
- 19:32A fastball, Thompson tying outside as the sun breaks out to cast a shadow here at Cleveland for the first time.
- 19:39One ball and no strikes.
- 19:40It's a count on Hank Thompson, a little left-handed hitter, standing deep at the plate.
- 19:44The weatherman said exactly at one o'clock we would expect the heavens to open up and rain the four down on us,
- 19:49but it hasn't happened so far.
- 19:52Garcia leans forward, puts back over his left shoulder, checking Willie Mays at first.
- 19:56The pitch is made to the plate.
- 19:57Thompson takes it high inside.
- 20:01Willie Mays holding right on there at first base.
- 20:04Two balls, no strikes.
- 20:05It's a count on Thompson.
- 20:08Hank Thompson batting a 333 in series play.
- 20:12Hank has walked wide, struck out once in the two games that have preceded this one.
- 20:18Garcia leaning forward to take his sign, checks his runner, Willie Mays.
- 20:21He's always a threat to goal.
- 20:22Down comes the pitch.
- 20:23Mays slips, going, and the pitch is taken at the plate for ball three.
- 20:28Garcia asks Jaco Conlon for another baseball and gets it.
- 20:32We should like to hear the start of the third game of the World Series to compliment the umpires for the work they have done in this World Series so far.
- 20:39We've had two fine jobs behind the plate in the first and second games.
- 20:42Al Bartick of the National League in the first game, a mighty fine job behind the plate.
- 20:45And Charlie Berry, the veteran in the American League umpire, came up with an equal performance yesterday.
- 20:50And here's Jaco Conlon, a very fine veteran, working the plate this afternoon.
- 20:54An overhand fastball.
- 20:55He's in there for a strike, giving a count on Thompson now, a three-and-one.
- 20:59Garcia back to visit the Rosenberg, number 25, standing down there on the mound.
- 21:05Gets up, takes the position on the rubber.
- 21:08Willie Mays will take a lead at first now.
- 21:10The first hole, green side corner on him.
- 21:13The check of the runner, down comes the pitch, taken.
- 21:15It's outside by Scherrard on a leather curveball.
- 21:18So Thompson drives his third base on balls in the series, the first one here this afternoon.
- 21:23The first walk driven up by Garcia.
- 21:25Garcia walks 71 over the regular season.
- 21:28Now hitting right-handed is Monty Urban.
- 21:31Monty has gone 0-4 in the series.
- 21:39He's starting the course at 0-0-0.
- 21:41The right-hand hitter has an opportunity of knocking in his first run.
- 21:44As Willie Mays has moved down to second on the walk, handed by Arturio DeSampson.
- 21:48The first pitch to Monty Urban, a strike.
- 21:52Monty backs his group up a handful of dirt, drives hands.
- 21:56Hudson downlong his uniform trousers, steps back in, beats the bat down on the rubber of home plate.
- 22:01Garcia now standing out the sunlight.
- 22:03The sun is broken forth in all of the printing here for at least a moment.
- 22:06Delivered to the plate.
- 22:08It's taken high and inside for ball one.
- 22:10One ball and one strike to count on Monty Urban.
- 22:13The big left field is the New York Giants.
- 22:16Batting number six in the order.
- 22:18He'll be followed by Davey Williams if he's needed.
- 22:21Five men have come to the plate.
- 22:22One runner has been scored by the Giants.
- 22:24They lead one to nothing.
- 22:27Willie Mays at second.
- 22:28Hank Thompson's run at first, two down.
- 22:31OK, a computer with an overhand let-up that sits outside at the shoulder.
- 22:35Two balls and one strike.
- 22:40And there's going to be some activity down on the bullpen now for the Cleveland Indians.
- 22:44The right-hander up and starting to throw for the Braves.
- 22:48That'll be Art Haldeman.
- 22:50Art Haldeman up throwing for Cleveland in the Cleveland bullpen.
- 22:53Down back, that'll be right field line.
- 23:01Interesting notes that Steve Jess just put up here and I believe that the two as I take the grants back through the books,
- 23:06the first team to score in both games that have already been played blocked the ball game.
- 23:10The book is thrown on.
- 23:11There's a half-foul ball hit off to the right of the plate and way back into the customers.
- 23:16Two balls, two strikes on Monty Urban.
- 23:18Yeah, that's right, Paul.
- 23:19Cleveland scored first in the first game and scored first in the second game and they went on to lose both of them.
- 23:24And now the Giants play the first time here in the top half of the first inning.
- 23:29Jess, I'm going to be going along in the series that we'd like to know for you.
- 23:34Two balls, two strikes to count on Monty Urban with runners for first and second, two down top of the first.
- 23:39The Giants leading one to nothing.
- 23:44Now Garcia as set.
- 23:45Check his runner, Willie Mays as second.
- 23:46Belivers plays an overhand fastball.
- 23:47Monty Urban punches the pile off the first-place line as goes Higgins over near the Cleveland Duggars.
- 23:51And Higgins is back.
- 23:52He's going to make the catch.
- 23:58That's one catch on a fastball by Jim Higgins.
- 24:00So here in the first inning for the New York Giants one run on a fair bay pitch.
- 24:04There was one walk mixed in there.
- 24:07There was another committed by Cleveland and two men were left on.
- 24:10So the score at the end of the top half of the first inning is the New York Giants one.
- 24:15They're now coming to back Cleveland Indians nothing.
- 24:19That's all.
- 24:20This is the got to do it game for the Indians if they want to preserve their World Series win record.
- 24:26If you've had the 1954 Gillette World Series record book handy, you know how it steps up your enjoyment of the game.
- 24:33You'll find it equally valuable this winter and when baseball wins around next spring.
- 24:37This free pocketized book index so anyone can put his finger on what he wants quickly gives all-time series scores.
- 24:44The record of every player modern record breaking performance, basic rules, baseball slang, scoring instructions, and for budding big leaders, there are also hints on winning baseball.
- 24:54Next to a copy by a Gillette Trooper Speed Racer set for one dollar the regular price.
- 24:59The record book is attached and it's free, but hurry they're running out fast.
- 25:08Now into the last half of inning number one here at the Minnesota Stadium in Cleveland.
- 25:12One to nothing in favor of the New York Giants.
- 25:14They scored one time on two base hits.
- 25:16Look at the bandage of a cruiser there.
- 25:20And we have the first unearned run in the 1964 World Series.
- 25:25Now stepping up to the plate hitting right-handed is Al Smith.
- 25:29Young fellow who led off for Cleveland yesterday by poking a home run out of the park at the Polo Ground.
- 25:34He has three hits for eight at-bats batting at 375.
- 25:39He crowds up on the plate, stands three quarters deep and is a joke hitter.
- 25:42Ruben Gomez from Francisco is on the mound for the New York Giants, makes the first pitch, a fast ball that's underneath for ball one.
- 25:52Ruben Gomez on the regular season for the New York Giants, won 17 ball games last night before shutout.
- 26:00His battering mate is the very dependable West Westman.
- 26:04At first base, Wiley Lockman.
- 26:06Second is David Williams, a shortstop captain Al Vandark.
- 26:08At third, Hank Thompson, out of left field, Marty Irvin. The center fielder is Lou Mays.
- 26:12And in right field is Don Mueller.
- 26:16Al Smith up at the plate ready now. Gomez, the right-hander, throws a sidearm fast ball.
- 26:19And the south side, the crossfire, misses the ball too.
- 26:26Two balls, no strikes.
- 26:29Down here on Al Smith.
- 26:31Thompson's playing rather shallow third base on his right-hand hitter.
- 26:35Right-hander throws another sidearm. It's been off the hip, right side up against the batter, the ball three.
- 26:45Al Smith will stand around the left.
- 26:47Al Smith, he'll put that long ball for you.
- 26:51He proved that yesterday, leading off ball three.
- 26:55Aware of number 32.
- 26:58Simon looks down over the shoulder of Westman.
- 27:00Here comes Gomez's pitch.
- 27:01Sidearm let up, it's up side with all four. Maybe it's up for tying on arms.
- 27:06That's the second time Smith has lost in a series.
- 27:09First base on balls given up by Gomez.
- 27:13Here's Bobby Avila.
- 27:25Bobby Avila.
- 27:28He's fighting a 222, has two for nine in the series.
- 27:33One on, nobody out here in the last half of the first inning.
- 27:38Ruben Gomez looks over at first base to see what Whitey Luckman's doing about holding him close for the years.
- 27:44Bobby Avila standing in, batting right-handed.
- 27:47The American League batting champion.
- 27:50Gomez throws the pitch, home is going to break the swing on and foul-kicked.
- 27:54So Al Lopez wanted to get that man down to second, get him around.
- 28:02Right away the gay senior are playing hit-and-run ball here.
- 28:05Before the thousands that have jammed in here through the municipal stadium in Cleveland.
- 28:10The Giants are leading in the ball game one to nothing by virtue of their one run score at the top of the first.
- 28:15And aware of number one himself, Bobby Avila.
- 28:18He'll put in front of the very first Mexico.
- 28:21Out at the plate here for the Indians.
- 28:23Comes in with the pitch, there's the bunt.
- 28:25Down to the left for Mike Gomez, comes off field, throws the first base in time.
- 28:28There's got Bobby Avila and there is the runner moving down to second.
- 28:32Flip over and second, almost thrown out.
- 28:36Whitey Luckman, whips that ball over quickly.
- 28:39He's got Bob Alvin Dark.
- 28:42So Avila's out, sacrificing, very successfully.
- 28:45A very nicely placed bunt for the left-back pitchers now.
- 28:47And if you look out on the diamond, Gomez and a big hurd made to play to Whitey Luckman.
- 28:52There's Larry Dobie.
- 29:00Alvin Dark talking to Wilbur Gomez.
- 29:04As this fellow is in right hand to get ready now to pitch to left hand hitting Larry Dobie.
- 29:09This kind of feeling for the Cleveland Indians has been such a star for them over the years,
- 29:13particularly this year in the run-started-in department and in the home run department.
- 29:19So it snippers on at second base, a pretty free-to-pitch guy who can really move around the bases.
- 29:24Dobie has a chance to find his ball, get him up to him and come through with a base hit.
- 29:27Right on fastball, Dobie's low into the base.
- 29:30And that is ball one.
- 29:43Now Gomez hits.
- 29:45Here comes the pitch, a fastball that drives Dobie back from the pitchers, flipped over the inside center chest,
- 29:49high, right under the level, score called strike.
- 29:54One ball, one strike to count on Larry Dobie.
- 29:57He holds up that way down to the end.
- 29:59Starts to bend his knees as though he were about to get down on him.
- 30:04Opens his stance just slightly down toward first base.
- 30:07The outfield is around right and deep.
- 30:09Hit to him, a let-up curveball is outside knee-high, football through.
- 30:14One ball, one strike on Larry Dobie.
- 30:16One out to the Indians here in the last half of the first inning.
- 30:18Al Smith, the leadoff man, walks with sacrifice by Bobby Adair down to second base.
- 30:23And he's in starting position at second in this one-nothing ball game for the Giants.
- 30:27Tony Cucinello waiting to wave some traffic by third.
- 30:31He yells upwards with encouragement as Gomez pitches outside again to Dobie for ball three.
- 30:36Three balls and one strike.
- 30:46Smith hanging pretty close there at second base.
- 30:48He doesn't want to be caught off.
- 30:50The Giants use the count plate quite often.
- 30:53Takes a little whirl around and makes the cross back there,
- 30:55waiting for the man-designated cover.
- 31:00And in the hopes that he does.
- 31:03The Giants call as Larry Dobie steps away from the plate and Gomez, about ready to pitch,
- 31:06has to break back off the mound.
- 31:08Now he's set.
- 31:09Smith takes his lead and comes to pitch.
- 31:11It's taken by Dobie over on the outside corner for a half-second.
- 31:15That's the second lead.
- 31:17Three balls and two strikes.
- 31:20Well, we've got thousands on fire from the stands here this afternoon.
- 31:23I can tell you that for sure.
- 31:25Oh, everybody sees that pitch just a little bit differently.
- 31:29It all depends on which side you're rooting for, too.
- 31:33It's the bail pitch now to Larry Dobie for in two.
- 31:36Gomez checks his runner at second.
- 31:37Delivers the fake fastball.
- 31:38Dobie swings at the high-fly ball to his short center field.
- 31:40Coming in is Willie Mays, as he has it.
- 31:43And he has.
- 31:44So there's the second out.
- 31:46Dobie flying out to Willie Mays in center.
- 31:48Smith holds on at second.
- 31:49And here is Victor Wirtz.
- 31:52Victor Wirtz carrying the highest batting percentages of anybody on the field right now.
- 32:03For Cleveland in this area, Victor Wirtz, obtained from the Baltimore Orioles
- 32:08about the middle of the summer, has five for eight, including extra base floors.
- 32:14And he is batting right this minute at 625 in World Series play.
- 32:18Big fellow from New York, Pennsylvania, hit from left-handed.
- 32:21Primitually bald guy.
- 32:24Steps up to the plate.
- 32:25He's got pretty good-sized wrists and forearms.
- 32:30Hits him left-handed, stands almost straight away to the pitcher.
- 32:33The outfield comes around slightly to the right.
- 32:35Particularly, right fielder Don Mueller playing deep in right field.
- 32:41Hits his inside off the hip for a ball run.
- 32:47Fast half of the first inning. Cleveland has a tying run on its second, two down.
- 32:51Victor Wirtz up there.
- 32:55Then comes the pitch.
- 32:56Again, Wirtz backs off one inside.
- 32:58That's ball two.
- 33:03Leo DeRosier must really be masterminding the Giants right down to the net field
- 33:07because Westrom keeps checking in for the Giants dugout to DeRosier to make sure what he wants called.
- 33:15Gomez delivers a knucklehead that's hung on the middle of his side.
- 33:18Gomez will flash that knucklehead to you every once in a while.
- 33:21And I notice he throws a sidearm pitch, much in the manner of Larry Janton, who is now on the coaching staff.
- 33:30You know, Larry was taken off of the active staff.
- 33:32He's now coached, but they tell me he's going to make a comeback for next year.
- 33:35He's been working with these pitchers.
- 33:37And one of the pitchers, Gomez sort of emulates the old guy from Forest Grove.
- 33:43The three-one delivery. There's the knucklehead again. It's outside.
- 33:47Three balls and one strike to count on Victor Wirtz.
- 33:55That's the moment I felt a drop of rain.
- 33:57This was my imagination.
- 33:59Three balls, one strike to count on Victor Wirtz.
- 34:02Neff is on his second and scoring position.
- 34:04The outfield around to right and deep.
- 34:06Wirtz comes in free, one with the fastball. Swing on and hits right on the line to Alvin Dark and Short.
- 34:14Wirtz lands out to Dark and Short.
- 34:18There's a dog for Cleveland. That's what goes for the board.
- 34:20No runs. There were no base hits.
- 34:22There were no giant errors.
- 34:24And Cleveland has now left their 27th man on, the first one here this afternoon.
- 34:31As players on the field this afternoon, one guy stands out in my mind.
- 34:36I saw him at the Pittsburgh Magnificent ball game yesterday for five innings before he was dented.
- 34:41And I went down to the locker room and ran into Early Wim in that locker room and he was shaving yesterday.
- 34:47He's a fine guy.
- 34:49He's as fine as you ever heard from me. And he's a real rooter for Gillette.
- 34:53He told me, sure I used the Gillette razor round. There's nothing like it.
- 34:57A quick shave puts me back in form after a tough workout.
- 35:00And finally, here's the stuff, easy shaving, one piece Gillette I've been telling you about, remember?
- 35:05You get the Gillette World Series Record Book with us, please.
- 35:14Now we move into the second inning here, at Cleveland.
- 35:18The first man up for the New York Giants will be Williams, starting the last third of their batting order.
- 35:23Williams will be followed by West Westman, and then will come Ruben Gomez,
- 35:27as Mike Garcia goes back to the mound.
- 35:30Mike Garcia from Visellia, California.
- 35:34Big likeable right-hander, working with his battering mate Jim Hagan.
- 35:39Dave Williams batting in the series at 0-0-0. He's 0-7.
- 35:44He's coming up.
- 35:46The wearer of number ten.
- 35:48Davey stands about three-quarters deep at the plate.
- 35:51Sweetwired spread apart, slightly open, stands down toward bird.
- 35:54The justy comes up to play shallow at third base.
- 35:57The justy expands around to the left for Davey.
- 36:01And all hands are ready to go.
- 36:021-0 in favor of the Giants here over the Indians at municipal stadium in Cleveland in the third game of the 1954 World Series.
- 36:11The justy is ready.
- 36:12Frozen overhand curveball.
- 36:14Touch guard at ball one.
- 36:18The justy will give you a little of that big motion in through that close stuff sometimes.
- 36:22The justy's best pitch is probably quite in the fastball.
- 36:24There's the fastball.
- 36:25It's under the knee.
- 36:27Good ball to strike to count on Davey Williams.
- 36:30Rest him on deck to go next.
- 36:32Herman Francis, his coach for the Giants, down behind third.
- 36:35At first it's ready for Simmons.
- 36:37Oh, that's ready really.
- 36:38It was a picture in his day, wasn't it?
- 36:42Great. Jim is like, you remember him many times.
- 36:44Ticks. A fastball.
- 36:45Fired through the knees for a called strike.
- 36:47He's down to two-and-one now on Williams.
- 36:51He's taken down the comfort line.
- 36:52Garfield leads forward to take it.
- 36:55And they pitch now to Davey Williams.
- 36:57Garfield overhands the fastball.
- 36:59It's just low enough right.
- 37:00That's ball three.
- 37:03Three balls and one strike.
- 37:07Garfield isn't playing his deep for Davey Williams as they would play, say, for a guy like Weston.
- 37:13Williams won't hit that long ball too often.
- 37:15Fastball to him is fired across the knees, an overhand fastball to run the count clean through.
- 37:24Williams moves that stick back and forth rather nervously.
- 37:29Garfield seems to operate the same way.
- 37:32He's a header behind.
- 37:33Delivers three-two to the fastball.
- 37:34Inside off the knees for ball four.
- 37:37So Williams walks for his first time this afternoon and the first time in the World Series.
- 37:42He's got the second base on balls given up by Garfield.
- 37:46And the batter is West Westrom.
- 37:48West has two base hits for sixth at bat.
- 37:52And his percentage for World Series players this year is 333.
- 37:56Right-hand hitter with a slightly open stance down toward 30.
- 37:59So he's headed corners across batter's box.
- 38:03Works up somewhat on the handle.
- 38:05Walks up on the first pitch and takes it under the knees for ball one.
- 38:11Javi Williams opens the second inning by getting a walk here for the New York Giants.
- 38:18He's on the first base.
- 38:19And Pickworks holds the inside corner.
- 38:25Larksy is taking plenty of time.
- 38:28Text is running Williams at first.
- 38:29Delivers the plate.
- 38:30An overhand fastball is through there.
- 38:31First strike right off the base.
- 38:34Westrom just shook his head as if to say he didn't quite think so.
- 38:38He's going out home in Franks to pick up the sign.
- 38:41It's been relayed from the bench.
- 38:43Williams has that sign.
- 38:44He's already been informed as to what it might be from Freddie Simmons.
- 38:49Counted one ball, one strike on Westrom.
- 38:53Garcia settles down, deals it off and Westrom's trying to bunch the ball.
- 38:57Misses it completely.
- 38:58The ball gets away from Huygen here goes to Williams down to the second base.
- 39:01So we'll know in a minute whether it's going to be a wild pitch or a fastball.
- 39:04It's a wild pitch.
- 39:06So we have a wild pitch moving David Williams down to second base.
- 39:10Shrugs the wild pitch to Garcia.
- 39:14So David Williams now is in scoring position.
- 39:28Garcia and Magersky are talking things over.
- 39:30Williams had a wild pitch yesterday if you recall.
- 39:33And Lemonhead won the first day.
- 39:35All three of the Cleveland pitchers have come up with a wild pitch now in one of the third games.
- 39:44Westom at the plate with a count of two balls, one strike.
- 39:46David Williams now in scoring position.
- 39:48One to nothing in favor of the New York Giants.
- 39:50They scored in the top of the first inning.
- 39:52Garcia pitches.
- 39:53Westom tries to bunch this one and fouls it off to the right of the plate.
- 39:56So they're trying to get Williams over to third to score him on that sacrifice fly.
- 40:00It's no other way.
- 40:02But Westom now has a count of strike two so the big danger of the bunch goes to the board.
- 40:08Two balls, two strikes to count on Westom.
- 40:16This Western's a very determined guy.
- 40:21Very hardworking guy.
- 40:24They call him the bulldog behind the plate.
- 40:27I guess he is in a way.
- 40:29He's got his 15-year-old time and hangs on.
- 40:31He's still ready to pitch two and two and two.
- 40:33He's down.
- 40:34The corner of the miss for strike three.
- 40:38Gomez setting that fast ball and got him.
- 40:42That's the second strikeout for him.
- 40:45And Ruben Gomez, a pretty fair-hitting pitcher, comes up to the plate.
- 40:50West Western from Clearbrook, Minnesota.
- 40:52Now living in Hyde Park, New York.
- 40:54Strikes back to the Giants dugout down the third baseline to sit down.
- 40:59Ruben Gomez coming up to the plate.
- 41:11Ruben Gomez hits him right-handed.
- 41:12That's the big swim.
- 41:13Now, quickly for the equal right-hander.
- 41:15He has an overly close stance.
- 41:16Let's look forward to the plate.
- 41:18Fall and slander.
- 41:20Remember, it serves me rightly.
- 41:21Ruben Gomez hit a home run with here for the Giants.
- 41:25And please remember, let's fix it.
- 41:26Remember, he swings on the first pitch and doesn't get it.
- 41:28Let's hear Ruben, point that fast ball in there.
- 41:36Baby Williams still on there at second base.
- 41:40One out here and they talk to second inning.
- 41:42Giants leading one to nothing.
- 41:46As they were working again, take something off the fast ball.
- 41:49And this is with a bow outside to Gomez.
- 41:51He's down.
- 41:52There's one ball, one strike with him now.
- 41:54On back to go next is the Giants leadoff man, first baseman, Whitey Lockman.
- 41:57He started everything off here in this ball game with a line drive single in the right center.
- 42:04Let's hear again a second runner at second.
- 42:06That's Baby Williams.
- 42:08Hooks down to Gomez.
- 42:10Then delivers to him an overhand fast ball.
- 42:11Gomez countered in the center field.
- 42:12Larry Doby offers left to center, takes the line drive, hurriedly rips up the call in,
- 42:16and Baby Williams has to hold on at second.
- 42:20Gomez hit the ball well all right, but lined it right to Larry Doby.
- 42:24They have a second out here in the top half, Albany number two.
- 42:28Whitey Lockman moves in.
- 42:31Here's Carolina Gomez.
- 42:35He's one of the most quiet guys you'll meet in a long time.
- 42:38Whitey Lockman, he and Don Muir, I think if you put them in a room all by themselves,
- 42:42they probably wouldn't have 50 words of conversation in 24 hours.
- 42:50Mike Garcia ready to pitch to Whitey Lockman.
- 42:55Only thing Whitey gets hoppin' mad twice on playing field.
- 43:00And Don Muir only one time.
- 43:05Always steady performance, both of them.
- 43:10Now Garcia gets set.
- 43:13Takes his time from Higginafter, shaking one off.
- 43:16He's ready, looks willing, second.
- 43:19There's the tape.
- 43:20And breaks back off the mound and chases Williams back into second.
- 43:24Mageski is playing shallow at third base.
- 43:36Down comes the pitch to the plate now to Lockman at flow.
- 43:40Count is one ball and no strikes.
- 43:46Can you imagine truly something for Hank Mageski to be down there playing the third base in the World Series?
- 43:51He's been a utility man for several years.
- 43:55He probably figures this is a real opportunity, a rematch, so to speak.
- 44:02The
- 44:04fastball is over for Lee.
- 44:06The first strike now is a count on Whitey Lockman.
- 44:16Garcia taking plenty of time to convert.
- 44:19Two outs, one on.
- 44:20Williams is second.
- 44:21He was lost and was wild-pitched for second.
- 44:24Garcia trying to get out of his trouble here with the Giants leading on the method.
- 44:27Dover, Lockman swings and beats one foul.
- 44:29And while we have the new ball going in play, let's pause for a second for station identification.
- 44:33This is New T.O., the radio network for all of America.
- 44:36WGM Chicago, your exclusive World Series station.
- 44:47Right back to the versus of hand here at Cleveland.
- 44:50It's Mike Garcia picking to Whitey Lockman with the count of one ball and no strikes.
- 44:53And down in the Cleveland bullpen, Art Haldeman.
- 44:57Right hand there warming up for Cleveland just in case Garcia should have any more trouble here in inning number two.
- 45:02Mike has been touched for one run and two hits.
- 45:04All of that coming in the first inning.
- 45:05One error behind him, of course, did not help him.
- 45:07The run incidentally is unearned in case he's feeling in late.
- 45:11Garcia is ready.
- 45:13Delivers a curveball swung on by Lockman and dribbled up the first baseline where Vic Wirtz picks it up.
- 45:19One ball and two strikes.
- 45:20A count on Whitey Lockman.
- 45:22Hanging around, hoping to get a chance to hit the innings, Alvin Dark.
- 45:28Leaves the midfield, Vic to Wirtz at first.
- 45:30Bobby Avila at second, George Dickman at short, and Hank Brzezki at third.
- 45:43Lockman choking up on the handle of the bat.
- 45:45Standing away from the plate with an open stance, flatly down toward first.
- 45:48Outfield playing him as a punch hitter into left field.
- 45:51They're not even playing him straight away.
- 45:53Big hole in the outfield in the right center.
- 45:55Locked the daylight too.
- 45:57Down the right field line.
- 45:59Garcia delivers.
- 46:00Whitey Lockman swings and cuts his foul back to the tree.
- 46:04One ball, two strikes.
- 46:05A count on Whitey.
- 46:09David Williams.
- 46:12Another second base there so long he's about to grow roots.
- 46:17Cuts down.
- 46:18Out takes his lead.
- 46:20Garcia keeps checking back there to make sure Whitey.
- 46:25To make sure David Williams is not taking too much of a lead.
- 46:28Now he delivers the plate to Whitey Lockman.
- 46:30Swung on.
- 46:31There's a high fly ball hung along the right field line.
- 46:33It could be trouble for Tindr, but Avila goes back and slips over in foul territory.
- 46:37Takes that ball and stumbles and turns on there.
- 46:39Tindr's track and goes down.
- 46:40He's all right.
- 46:42A very, very nice play by Bobby Avila in foul territory.
- 46:46Slipped across the line, deep behind first base.
- 46:49Oh, made a great play out of that one.
- 46:51So Whitey Lockman is out.
- 46:53Here's a second baseman, Bobby Avila.
- 46:58Go for the dance.
- 46:59No runs, no hits.
- 47:00No errors.
- 47:01One man was left on.
- 47:02A round of applause for Bobby Avila as he comes off the playing field.
- 47:05He richly deserved it.
- 47:07Well, a score at the end of one and a half minutes of play is New York 1 and Cleveland nothing.
- 47:14My opponent is no good.
- 47:16Hooray!
- 47:19My opponent can't even count.
- 47:21Hooray!
- 47:23You're wrong.
- 47:24I'm right.
- 47:25Ooh.
- 47:27Although we argue politics, on one thing we're a queen.
- 47:32Force make her better looking gay.
- 47:35Kick your ass to proceed.
- 47:37My friend, you came great, 1, 2, 3.
- 47:40And fast, quick, pay your debt.
- 47:43Plus, double-edged economy.
- 47:45The people forced to laugh, to look sad.
- 47:49When you paint the world, you feel sad.
- 47:53On the ball, it's easy to just be sad.
- 47:57Kick your ass to proceed.
- 48:02Your hand raised.
- 48:04Well, don't forget, friends, the valuable Gillette World Series record book is included free when you buy a Gillette Super Speed Racer.
- 48:11Now Hank Majewski.
- 48:14He was used as a pinch spatter over in New York.
- 48:17And Hank Majewski's 0 for 1.
- 48:21So he's coming up for his second time in World Series play.
- 48:26Hank Majewski batting right-handed.
- 48:28He's a little fella, very stockily put together, heavy, he's set through the leg.
- 48:34Pretty good sized chest on him.
- 48:36Gomez tries to pass ball on him and misses with it outside.
- 48:39Low, for ball one, he gets away from Western, shoots back and screens.
- 48:44Majewski came on as a pinch spatter in the ninth inning, the first game of the World Series, and didn't even get a chance to get up to the plate.
- 48:53Mitchell came in to bat for him when Drosser pulled some strategy and shifted pitchers from Little to Grytham.
- 48:58This next pitch is over the low and it counts as ball two on Majewski.
- 49:15Two balls and one strike.
- 49:17Gomez tried on fast ball, plays the two there at the knees for a cold strike.
- 49:23Two balls and one strike on Hank Majewski.
- 49:26I can guarantee you that should the closing Indians pop up with anything in this ballgame this afternoon, this crowd, and there's a good one here, will really tear the place down.
- 49:37The Giants have won a pair and the Indians are trying to dent it.
- 49:41There's the third ball to Majewski, good at the knees for a cold strike.
- 49:45Two balls, two strikes on Hank Majewski.
- 49:48He's the number five hitter in the Cleveland order coming up for his first time in the ballgame, leading off here in the second inning.
- 49:53He's leading one to nothing.
- 49:59Gomez sets the other two to a side on curveball, swung on and bounced foul down to Tony Couturello, approaching behind third.
- 50:06Clips it over to Gomez.
- 50:08Probably you can hear in the background the rattle of the telegraph key sending the description of this ballgame to parts of the world where radio probably has not been able to get to.
- 50:21And that would be pretty small I think because Evans knows this one's going all over the place.
- 50:28Fastball is swung on by Majewski.
- 50:30There's a high tough foul on the first base line.
- 50:32Whitey Rockland gets over under, makes a catch and Majewski is out.
- 50:36Edmunds on Dave Philly.
- 50:39Dave Philly is looking for his first World Series hit.
- 50:42He's also score.
- 50:45The fourth hitter from Paris, Texas will be batting left-handed against Ruben Gomez.
- 50:51He's been quite a defensive man for Cleveland this year.
- 50:55Dave Philly, obtained from the Philadelphia Athletics by the Cleveland Indians.
- 51:01Gomez ready to work to him, delivers a sidearm curve that stays outside of our shoulder high.
- 51:05Gomez will throw you the school ball every now and then and he works it particularly to left-hand hitters.
- 51:12Looks like that's what that might have been.
- 51:16Comes down again with an overhand fastball and misses with it again.
- 51:20That's ball two, low and outside.
- 51:24Two balls, no strikes. One out.
- 51:26Nobody on last half of the second inning.
- 51:28Cleveland up at bat and trailing one to nothing.
- 51:32Gomez, sort of a spindly leg guy, standing out on the mound, leaning forward, taking a side from Weston.
- 51:37Goes to the top of the pump, comes down with a curve ball that Philly strives into and takes shoulder high for ball three.
- 51:49Three balls, no strikes.
- 51:54Continues to be dark and overcast here at Cleveland.
- 51:58Now the three-oh delivery.
- 52:00A fastball inside for ball four.
- 52:03And picks up the second walk, given up by Gomez.
- 52:08Here's George Strickland.
- 52:13George Strickland in the World Series has gone 0 for 6.
- 52:18So he has no batting suspended.
- 52:20George has been a victim of a strikeout twice.
- 52:25He has completely closed stance and bats right hand.
- 52:27All thin color from New Orleans, Louisiana.
- 52:31Gomez, textured runner, the potential tying run for Cleveland at first in Dave Philly.
- 52:36And who is the picker in the plate?
- 52:38Strickland takes it over first strike.
- 52:41No balls, one strike to count on George Strickland.
- 52:44One out, one on here in the last half of the second inning.
- 52:49These Cleveland Indians are grim and determined this afternoon.
- 52:51This is a game they've got to win.
- 52:53Third ball to Strickland is under the knees.
- 52:56Counted one ball and one strike.
- 53:00Gomez bouncing that ball around in his mitts.
- 53:03Steps up, puts his foot on the rubber.
- 53:06Looks around the infield and outfield and then peers down until he's battered George Strickland.
- 53:10Dave Philly takes his lead at first base, whitey Loughman inside on the corner.
- 53:13The pitch is hung on by Strickland in the mitts.
- 53:16Gomez came in with a sidearm medium speed pitch.
- 53:20He throws a lot of his stuff three-quarter overhand with some of it sidearm.
- 53:25Very rarely does he go completely overhand with his pitch.
- 53:29One ball and two strikes.
- 53:32One little bit surprised that Gomez Daddy might be listening in this afternoon.
- 53:35There's an overhand pitch outside.
- 53:38Three-quarter overhand.
- 53:40Ruben Gomez Daddy is the pitcher on his hand down in Puerto Rico.
- 53:46Two balls, two strikes is the count here on George Strickland, the wearer of number two.
- 53:54Two and two.
- 53:56Dave Philly ready to run on anything, takes his plate at first base and drives off a couple of steps.
- 54:02Gomez, two-twos the plate, curve ball, swung on and found it right back to the mound.
- 54:05Gomez is high off the mound, takes the ball close to David Williams.
- 54:08For the outfield, the first base is not in time.
- 54:12Gomez came off that mound like a small kitten.
- 54:15Bounced high on that ball, made the throw back to second base to David Williams.
- 54:18He was taken out of that play very nicely by David Williams, but he got it by Dave Philly, but he got his throw off anyway.
- 54:25Jim Hagan, the batsman.
- 54:31Two down for Cleveland in the second.
- 54:34George Strickland, the runner at first base, and Jim Hagan batting at 125.
- 54:39It's coming up to the plate.
- 54:40Jim has had one base hit, a double.
- 54:42He hit into left center field.
- 54:45That was in the second inning of yesterday's ball game.
- 54:48He was sacrificed down to third, but died there in that second inning.
- 54:53Jim Hagan, right-hand batter.
- 54:58Massachusetts four leaning over the plate.
- 55:00Takes Gomez fastball outside to ball one.
- 55:04Those fast pickers with his gray overcast here today are going to look even faster.
- 55:12George Strickland takes the lead now at first, two down here in the second.
- 55:15Pitch to Hagan is a low curve ball under the knees.
- 55:17That's ball two.
- 55:20Jim Hagan has struck out just one time in the series.
- 55:22He's cut for Cleveland all through the series with the exception of the time he was lifted
- 55:28and mixed with Gretzky.
- 55:29And the first game came on to catch an inning.
- 55:33Two balls, no strikes on Hagan, right-hand batter.
- 55:36Side on pure ball, Hagan goes a little bit too far around trying to check himself.
- 55:40This ball, again, seems to strike one.
- 55:45Cleveland has come up with a pitching here in this World Series,
- 55:48but the highly-fonded bats of the Cleveland Indians have been, in a way, rather silent.
- 55:53So that might be the answer to the edge the Giants now have.
- 55:59Gomez ready with the 2-1 delivery to Hagan.
- 56:01Weaver's a little up there, and Hagan swings on it, sends a bounding ball down to third base line foul.
- 56:06Two balls and two strikes to count on Jim Hagan.
- 56:09Two outs, one on, last half of the second inning, score one to nothing in favor of the New York Giants.
- 56:15It was figured by most of the experts that Cleveland had a pretty good opportunity to win this ballgame this afternoon,
- 56:21going with Mike Garcia, a pretty good fast baller,
- 56:24and they still have a lot of time to win this ballgame.
- 56:26We're just in the last half of the second inning.
- 56:29Two downs for Cleveland, one on, the tying run at first.
- 56:33Gomez, pretty tough right-hander in his own right, delivers.
- 56:39The quarter overhand pitch is outside and low, three and two.
- 56:45Three balls, two strikes.
- 56:46Now George Strickland will be off and moving toward second base when Gomez fires away to Hagan.
- 56:57Strickland about to step off and take his lead.
- 56:59Gomez goes to the top of the stretch, hesitates, and quickly throws over to first.
- 57:03That is, his motion was quick, but his toss was easy because Strickland hadn't wandered away too far.
- 57:09Count remains three and two on Hagan as he digs in his plate.
- 57:12Now Gomez, that delivers.
- 57:13There goes the run of the pitcher, swung run and fouled back to the screen off to our right.
- 57:17Throws right up into the television booth off to our right.
- 57:21There's a good friend, Jack Brickhouse, and that's Hodges working.
- 57:32Count remains three and two on Jim Hagan.
- 57:36Gomez starts to get ready.
- 57:40Checks George Strickland.
- 57:41Down comes Fitzhawker Strickland.
- 57:42The ball is swung on, hit down to third.
- 57:44Deep behind third Thompson comes up with a throw, sends it to the third at first, but Whitey Loughman comes up with it and Hagan is out.
- 57:50Throwed up to Towson's side.
- 57:52Loughman taking out Thompson's low throw at first base.
- 57:55And here in the second inning, again, the Cleveland Indians have a tying run on.
- 57:58Cannot capitalize.
- 57:59No runs, there were no base hits.
- 58:02There were no errors and one man was left on.
- 58:06Well, right here at the end of two full innings of play, it's New York 1 and Cleveland nothing.
- 58:11And a ball game that promises to give us just as many throws as we have had in the first two that were played over at the Polo Grounds in New York City.
- 58:20And while Mike Garcia comes out there, he's got to get ready for any number three.
- 58:25I'd like to switch over here to my sidekick, Jimmy Dudley, and see what his comments in the first two innings might possibly be.
- 58:32Jimmy, how about that? What do you think?
- 58:34Well, Al, I'm getting a great deal of pleasure out of watching this Rielgen Gomez work.
- 58:38This is the first time that we've actually seen him in tough competition.
- 58:41And I'm telling you, that screwball that he has really has the boys up there baffled.
- 58:45They don't know exactly what they're swinging for and so far he's been master of the situation.
- 58:50But the game has started moving along just like the first two.
- 58:55The Giants broke on tap and it's one of those days when you sort of figure that the Indians must have the breaks coming somewhere along the line.
- 59:03Well, all right, Jim, and we can expect this afternoon, as it wears on, to see both of these fellows, Gomez and Garcia,
- 59:10firing that fastball right up until the last minute.
- 59:14One thing we can caution you to watch before as far as Gomez is concerned, as the afternoon goes on, he'll come in more and more spite on with these pitches.
- 59:23Mike Garcia, of course, the biggest benefit of fastball pitching is the overhand variety.
- 59:28And now let's see what he's going to do here with the Giants in the top half of the third inning.
- 59:31He's behind one to nothing as the Giants lead the back margin.
- 59:34Alvin Dark is the back one who struck out the first inning.
- 59:37They'll be followed by Don Mullen and by Willie Mays.
- 59:40Mike Garcia, big right-hander, delivers an overhand fastball. Dark swings it out into left center field.
- 59:45That's going to be in there for the base hit.
- 59:47Coming over is Doby to pick it up on the first skip and fire it into George Strickland.
- 59:51So Dark opens with a single into left center.
- 59:54That'll give him his first hit this afternoon, giving him his fourth World Series hit.
- 59:58And that's at number three of Garcia.
- 1:00:03So Alvin Dark's first, Don Mullen, who forced out Wadie Lachman at second,
- 1:00:08and he himself went on to second when George Strickland committed the only Cleveland error in the series by throwing the wild at first base.
- 1:00:14Down comes the pitcher to win a break.
- 1:00:16Pitcher's one-one and hits through the hole between short and third, not into left field.
- 1:00:19There goes Alvin Dark all the way around the third.
- 1:00:25Don Mueller hitting through the left side of the infield, into left for a single.
- 1:00:29Throw-binding ball that died about halfway out into left field, and the trans-switch got it.
- 1:00:33He was able to make the throw in. Alvin Dark's running on the blow as he moved all the way into third base.
- 1:00:37So now Garcia is in trouble again. That's the fourth hit given up by Mike.
- 1:00:41That's the third hit Mueller has picked up in the series, going to battle 11 times.
- 1:00:47Willie Mays has one base hit for one time up today, and he sees Sammy in.
- 1:00:52Runs the first and third.
- 1:00:54Majeski playing just off-court, works on the inside corner on Mueller at first, and the second base combination playing a double play depth.
- 1:01:00Pitcher's swing on by Mays. There's the drive down to third to Majeski.
- 1:01:03He's got the ball, fires it into Higgins. That's got Alvin Dark and Horsey between home and third.
- 1:01:07There is Higgins, packing him up.
- 1:01:12And while the Horsey was going on for the tag out, the runners moved on down to second and third.
- 1:01:16So Mueller has moved in to third base on the field of choice.
- 1:01:23Willie Mays gets all the way down to second.
- 1:01:27And the play went from Majeski, third baseman, to Higgins.
- 1:01:34Back to Majeski and back to Higgins.
- 1:01:36Finally made the tag on Alvin Dark.
- 1:01:38So we have one out here in the top of the third inning, runners in second and third.
- 1:01:42And the batter coming up now is Thompson.
- 1:01:48Alvin Dark caught in the run down.
- 1:01:50Hank Majeski's first opportunity.
- 1:01:51The infield pulls up tight now and Hank Thompson on there is going to be, the play is going to be put on intentionally.
- 1:01:58They're not going to monkey around with him at all.
- 1:02:00They're going to put him on and set it up for a possible chance for a double play.
- 1:02:08Oh, there is ball three. Now ball four.
- 1:02:12So Thompson is intentionally locked. That will be the third base on balls given up by Garcia.
- 1:02:17And out there at second base, now Barlich, you know fans of second base umpire are standing in third territory.
- 1:02:23And that raises the question, if a batter's ball strikes him before reaching a fielder, is the hitter safer out?
- 1:02:30Well, you'll find the answer in the Gillette World Series record book.
- 1:02:33You get a copy free just by the new one-piece Gillette razor at the regular price.
- 1:02:37Happy
- 1:02:39World Series.
- 1:02:47Well, fans, here's the guy that's been giving the Sweden ending fits.
- 1:02:51Dusty Rose with hammer two home run.
- 1:02:54In world series play for the New York Giants.
- 1:02:56He's fighting for money open with the bases loaded.
- 1:02:58One out here in the top half of third inning.
- 1:03:00Dusty Rose, R-H-O-D-E-S.
- 1:03:03He'll probably stay in the ball game to play in the field.
- 1:03:06First field, delivers for him. Rose swings and it's a base hit for right field.
- 1:03:09In comes John Mueller to score the second run right behind him.
- 1:03:12Some strikes with Willie May. Thompson moves over the first.
- 1:03:15Well, now two more runs batted in.
- 1:03:17Dusty Rose batting here in the third inning.
- 1:03:21Check up on this guy, Rose. He's still batting a thousand.
- 1:03:24That gives him four hits for four at bat.
- 1:03:28He has now batted in seven runs.
- 1:03:30Batted in seven runs for the New York Giants.
- 1:03:33Gets through here this afternoon.
- 1:03:35Hit number five runs two and three up to our stand.
- 1:03:40And he now ties Dr. Bobby Brown, who held the record as a pink batter in world series.
- 1:03:46In three hits, now Dusty Rose has three pink hits in world series.
- 1:03:50Up to the plate is J.B. Williams taking the first pitch over for a called strike.
- 1:03:58Rose is in the right field.
- 1:04:00Moving Johnson around the third and scoring a pair.
- 1:04:04Draw three nothing and play for the Giants over Cleveland.
- 1:04:08That's their deliver. J.B. Williams snaps his head back and takes a fastball.
- 1:04:11It's a ten-point football run.
- 1:04:15And so what was it they said this morning about Dusty Rose?
- 1:04:19Given an inch, it'll take a mile.
- 1:04:22Boy, he's taking a mile against Cleveland this year.
- 1:04:26Cardfield ready. It delivers an overhand fastball.
- 1:04:28The winner breaking from third, squeeze is on, and the run scores.
- 1:04:31There is a throw to first base. It's not in time.
- 1:04:33Not in time to fix the work.
- 1:04:35So the Giants squeeze in their fourth run.
- 1:04:45It's now four to nothing.
- 1:04:47And the official scores are talking over the situation now,
- 1:04:50so whether it's going to be a base hit or not, we'll know in a moment.
- 1:05:10Mike, Jocelyn is going to be charged with an error for holding that ball too long.
- 1:05:14So it's going to be a sacrifice for Williams and an error on Jocelyn.
- 1:05:21But the run has been squeezed in.
- 1:05:28Up at the plate is Lutgren.
- 1:05:34Hit time is over first strike.
- 1:05:39Dusty's next delivery, evens the count of one and one.
- 1:05:46Rhodes on that squeeze play, sacrifice, which was the squeeze play.
- 1:05:51Move to second to hit to question, blow off the ball too.
- 1:05:55Two balls and one strike.
- 1:05:57So the Giants are sort of broken out in a rash here in the third inning,
- 1:06:00taking up three runs to go out in front four to nothing.
- 1:06:10Garcia, Texas runners, bears back, delivers to Westrom, who hits the ball back to the mound.
- 1:06:17Garcia has it close, first base to work for the Albers.
- 1:06:21The runners advance.
- 1:06:26Williams moves down to second.
- 1:06:29Dusty Rhodes, who batted here in the third inning for Marty Irvin,
- 1:06:32singled in a pair of runs, has now moved down on the injured out third base.
- 1:06:41Two outs, two on.
- 1:06:42The Giants have runners in scoring position, second and third.
- 1:06:45About a coming up is Ruben Gomez.
- 1:06:48Probably sees a great deal better about the situation.
- 1:06:51Down the bullpen for Cleveland, Art Houtemann.
- 1:06:54He's throwing again.
- 1:07:00Garcia wheels the pitching there, and Gomez swings on it and doesn't get it.
- 1:07:04Last minute he tried to check himself, but he'd gone too far.
- 1:07:08Rhodes, who batted for Irvin, is on at third base.
- 1:07:16Williams, the second base runner, first is open.
- 1:07:18Garcia delivers a let-up curve.
- 1:07:20Taken. Let-up curve, peak of the cap, runs his count to one and one.
- 1:07:26He's looking through the record book here.
- 1:07:29Garreg has nine runs batted in, going through the let-world series record book,
- 1:07:34to lead in single series.
- 1:07:39Rhodes now has seven.
- 1:07:41Lomax swings on the next 15 spousers down the first base line, way back into the crowd.
- 1:07:46So all those guys Rhodes, the third base, has to do to tie Garreg's record in the way of French batted in the single series and pick up a pair now.
- 1:07:53He's got maybe the rest of today.
- 1:07:55It all depends on what the Roaches are going to do where they're going to allow Rhodes to stay in left or not.
- 1:07:59He's got the day in tomorrow to do it, for sure.
- 1:08:02And if Cleveland should come back and win this one, it'll go more than that.
- 1:08:07The pitch to Blake is on managements over for Carl Stike three.
- 1:08:11Well, that's all. Eight men come to bat here for New York for the third inning.
- 1:08:17Lomax gets his third, or, uh, Cursi gets his third strike.
- 1:08:20I'd roam as the victim.
- 1:08:22And in the third inning, three big runs for the New York Giants, picked up on one, two, three base hit.
- 1:08:31There was one error and there were two men left on.
- 1:08:34So all that's far here, at the end of two and a half innings of play,
- 1:08:37the New York Giants four and the Cleveland Indians nothing.
- 1:08:44Well, Alvin Dark certainly has been sparking the spotlight as far as the Giants are concerned on the end of defense.
- 1:08:50And Alvin not only goes all out in baseball, but Alvin Dark goes all out on what a clean,
- 1:08:55good, relaxed save does for a fellow winning the sport.
- 1:08:58Alvin, and by the way, a quick look for Lou Boudreau, Bob Teller and Charlie Grimm.
- 1:09:03And by the way, a quick clean save with today's Gillette Super Speed Racer is a real break.
- 1:09:09How about doing a real big thing for yourself?

- 1:09:24Buy a Gillette Super Speed Racer set, one dollar.
- 1:09:26Attach three is a pocket size 112 page Gillette World Series record book.
- 1:09:38As we had expected, Jesse Rhodes goes into left field now for the New York Giants,
- 1:09:42playing left and left after third.
- 1:09:44And Bob Lemon comes up to bat for Mike Garcia.
- 1:09:46Bob Lemon the pitcher hits him left handed.
- 1:09:48Romare feeds him the fastball and is taken over to an eight-foot called strike.
- 1:09:53So Garcia is all through here after having hit three and easy with the four runs, five hits,
- 1:09:57walked three, struck out three and wild-pitched one time.
- 1:10:01The pitch to play taken by Lemon is strike two called.
- 1:10:06Time is called for the second while Weston goes out, talks to Romare.
- 1:10:10Actually just forgotten to turn the plate and yelled something up to him.
- 1:10:15Bob Lemon, who we told you on several occasions, has been used as a pinch batter although he is a pitcher.
- 1:10:22He brings in his pitch to miss and strikes three.
- 1:10:24So that's all for Bob Lemon as he goes down pinch batting for Garcia here in the third inning.
- 1:10:29And before we have just the drop of the batting order coming up for Cleveland,
- 1:10:32let's watch ten seconds of station identification.
- 1:10:35This is Newsable, the radio network for all America.
- 1:10:38WGM, the Chicago Tribune station, your explosive World Series station.
- 1:10:49Ruben Gomez ready now to deliver to Smith.
- 1:10:52The first pitch to him is crushed by a low and out strike of ball one.
- 1:10:55One out to Cleveland, last half of the third.
- 1:10:57The score is 4-0 in favor of the Giants.
- 1:10:59They scored one in the first inning, three in the big third,
- 1:11:02which they sent eight men to the plate.
- 1:11:04Gomez delivers, pitch is swung on and hits right back on the line to the pitcher.
- 1:11:09Gomez holds his four out number two.
- 1:11:13Two down, last half of the third as the Giants continue to handcuff the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:11:18Bobby Avila, who sacrificed successfully in the first inning,
- 1:11:22coming up now for his first official out bat of the afternoon.
- 1:11:25Gomez, who has been old man tough here this afternoon,
- 1:11:29he's been ice water personified, is ready to pitch to Bobby Avila.
- 1:11:34Down comes that first pitch and Avila takes the trooper across the corner
- 1:11:41on the outside at about week half, strike one.
- 1:11:44Mike García, in going three innings here this afternoon against the Giants,
- 1:11:50used exactly 61 pitches.
- 1:11:53Gomez uses one up on a curve ball inside to Avila,
- 1:11:57counted one ball, one strike on him.
- 1:12:00Avila wearing number one.
- 1:12:02Bought enough in the score in favor of the Giants.
- 1:12:06Gomez ready, delivers one run aside on fastball at Mrs. Lowen outside,
- 1:12:10and the curve count moves off to two and one.
- 1:12:22Avila back into taking stands.
- 1:12:26Gomez set.
- 1:12:27Rubens fires away.
- 1:12:28There's a sidearm fastball.
- 1:12:29It's over.
- 1:12:30First strike and that's the second one.
- 1:12:34That's a pretty rough pitch to look at.
- 1:12:37Gomez throws it pretty well.
- 1:12:40When he's right, Gomez is right, he's pretty tough.
- 1:12:44Artur's seeing some after here too and gets clobbered on occasion.
- 1:12:49I guess that happens to any pitchers.
- 1:12:51Small is great.
- 1:12:53Avila after the next pitch, bounds one down before baseline foul.
- 1:12:57Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:13:01Last half of inning number three.
- 1:13:03Two outs, nobody on for prison.
- 1:13:06Let's let two men on and let's go on one in the first inning by virtue of a watch and one in the second.
- 1:13:12He got on as a walk.
- 1:13:14Gomez delivers fastball, swung on and hit down a third.
- 1:13:17Thompson waits for it, picks up now her as he throws a first and Avila is out by one strike.
- 1:13:22So Avila grounds out from third to first, Thompson to Lockman to retire the side,
- 1:13:26and to Cleveland in the third inning, nothing across.
- 1:13:28No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on.
- 1:13:31At the end of the third inning, the score is New York 4 and Cleveland nothing.
- 1:14:02Inconvenient dispenses with used-blades compartment.
- 1:14:06Gillette Blue Blades are $20.00 to $4.98, $10.00 for $49.00.
- 1:14:13Now the business of inning number four here at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland
- 1:14:17for the New York Giants fair leadoff man, Whitey Lockman.
- 1:14:20He'll be followed by number two hitter, Al Van Dork, and then by Don Mueller.
- 1:14:25Mueller, Mueller, Al Cleveland.
- 1:14:35Whitey Lockman comes up and the new pitcher for the Cleveland Indians will be Art Hulteman.
- 1:14:40Art Hulteman relieving for Cleveland.
- 1:14:44Right up to the first pitch by Art Hulteman to Whitey Lockman.
- 1:14:50Art pumps twice, first, calls an overhand curve.
- 1:14:54Let up a parade and it's inside, it's ball one.
- 1:14:58Art Hulteman picking up for the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:15:03One fellow born in Detroit, Michigan, now lives in Birmingham, Michigan.
- 1:15:08Goes to fastball and misses with that, that's ball two.
- 1:15:12Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:15:23Art pumps twice, twists, throws an overhand fastball and lays it through there.
- 1:15:28Whitey Lockman for a strike, down to two and one.
- 1:15:34Art takes the time again from Higgins.
- 1:15:39Bears down on the next pitch and swung on as the bonding ball hit the shortstop.
- 1:15:45Hulteman has it, off to his right, up to the first base and Whitey Lockman's up.
- 1:15:50About an hour for Alvin Darks.
- 1:16:10Art Hulteman gets ready to face him now.
- 1:16:12Art took year 115 and lost seven in the pairing 32 games.
- 1:16:16Art can get it over to Nees for a strike.
- 1:16:24Dark stands in late.
- 1:16:25Hulteman comes in with a big curve ball, drives dark back in the plate,
- 1:16:29lifting off the short hit.
- 1:16:30One ball, one strike down on the giant captain.
- 1:16:36About this afternoon has one to two, he's struck out the first inning.
- 1:16:40Hit a single, but left center field.
- 1:16:43He's struck out the third, the third in which the giant scored three times.
- 1:16:49Fastball to Darks, swung on as they fly ball to right field.
- 1:16:52Getting under the sputty on the routine chance and takes it to round number two.
- 1:16:59Two down, nobody on top of the fourth of the giant.
- 1:17:08And with the bases empty, Don Mueller comes up.
- 1:17:11He's not going to do any damage this time as far as driving men from first to third on the single to left.
- 1:17:18That's going to be a fastball inside off the knees.
- 1:17:21Don just sort of jackknifed back in place, keeping it in here.
- 1:17:26One ball, no strikes.
- 1:17:27Don choking up on the wood.
- 1:17:29Hulteman with that jangly pumping motion here delivers and the pitch is outside.
- 1:17:36Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:17:40Four to nothing in favor of the giants.
- 1:17:42They scored one in the first, three in the third.
- 1:17:44It will be four-nothing as we move along in the top of the fourth.
- 1:17:49Hulteman delivers two-nothing.
- 1:17:51Mueller swings and gets just enough of the pippet ball.
- 1:17:56Two and one.
- 1:18:01Now little patches of blue try to peek through the overjazz.
- 1:18:05We might get by without rain here this afternoon.
- 1:18:07No big hand fastball, punched by Don Mueller out by second base and a half-up by Bobby Avila coming on under it.
- 1:18:13He's got it.
- 1:18:14Well, that's all here for the Giants.
- 1:18:19And toward the top, they're pleased with the fact that the Giants go down a one-two-three order for the first time this afternoon.
- 1:18:25Nothing to throw.
- 1:18:27And the score at the end of three and one-half an inch of play remains New York 4 and Cleveland nothing.
- 1:18:34If you're traveling 21 or have just passed that point, grab your time a moment, William, while I have a word about shaving with the younger guys.
- 1:18:42What I want to get across is this.
- 1:18:44Far and away, the great majority of men start with Gillette and rely on the Gillette razor to make the job of shaving as thick, easy, and comfortable as can be.
- 1:18:53And the reason is as simple as all this.
- 1:18:56Day in and day out, only Gillette can give them shaves that feel so good and look so good or last so long.
- 1:19:02You'll go along with this at the best when you try the Gillette Super Speed Racer.
- 1:19:06It's available at only $1 complete with Blue Blade Dispenser and handy traveling cape.
- 1:19:12And remember, you get the World Series record book with it free.
- 1:19:19End of the last half of the fourth inning here.
- 1:19:21It's Larry Dobie shows up to the plate for shaving the face of Ruben Gomez.
- 1:19:25Ruben, like early win yesterday, has been just about as tough as anyone could imagine the pitcher to be.
- 1:19:32If you recall, it was early win, pitching for Cleveland yesterday,
- 1:19:36and he's promoted the Giants down with surprising rapidity until he ran into a pitfall in the fifth inning.
- 1:19:44And let's see what's going to happen with Gomez as he steps into the fourth inning to pitch for Larry Dobie,
- 1:19:49Dobie who has gone over one with a fly ball to center field.
- 1:19:53Gomez throws him the fast ball and Dobie takes it high.
- 1:19:55That's ball one.
- 1:19:58That's a ball game can turn right around and it's winking of an eye.
- 1:20:05Gomez cuts, delivers, Dobie swings on the slow curve and doesn't get it.
- 1:20:08That's like one.
- 1:20:10One ball and one strike.
- 1:20:12Gomez had him completely fooled on the true ball.
- 1:20:22Now the one-one pitch.
- 1:20:23There's the fast ball.
- 1:20:24It's one-one by Dobie.
- 1:20:25Reach out and let's see if that's going to drop in there for the first base hit off, Gomez.
- 1:20:28Dobie is on.
- 1:20:31Dobie comes in, fires that ball back in.
- 1:20:34Dobie opens the fourth with a single, a left field.
- 1:20:39Make the work catch a round of applause.
- 1:20:46The first base hit comes off Gomez here in the fourth.
- 1:20:48First base hit off early wind came yesterday by the Giants in the fifth inning.
- 1:20:53So it may be that the call has gone out just one inning early.
- 1:20:57Well on the minutes, four to nothing ball game in favor of New York.
- 1:21:00Cleveland trying to battle their way back.
- 1:21:01They know this has got to be the game.
- 1:21:06Make the work for the batter.
- 1:21:10Woods came up in the first inning and retired the side by hitting a tough line drive to Shrutched up to Alvin Darks.
- 1:21:17Gomez, Texas runner at first delivers the play.
- 1:21:19Woods takes the screwball outside for ball one.
- 1:21:27Getting a printable lighter here at Cleveland.
- 1:21:29Hope it continues to do so.
- 1:21:32Run up and delivery.
- 1:21:34Third ball looks like another screwball and that's low on that side.
- 1:21:39Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:21:47That's the other playing just about straight away for Woods and their flaming beat.
- 1:21:50Who wouldn't after he drove Willie Mays to a most surprising catch at the Polo grounds in the first game of the series.
- 1:21:56Pick a hung on by Woods and this is a strike one.
- 1:22:05Two balls, one strike on Victor Wirtz, the wearer of number 23.
- 1:22:09Trying to drive the bat handle off now as he steps up to the plate.
- 1:22:13Laces the bat off on the rubber of home plate.
- 1:22:17Takes the preliminary swing, puts the bat up on his shoulder.
- 1:22:20Gomez steps around and delivers to him.
- 1:22:22High inside curve ball.
- 1:22:24That's ball three.
- 1:22:26Third one to count on Victor Wirtz.
- 1:22:28Four to nothing to count in the ball game in favor of the Giants.
- 1:22:32They walked right out and got one in the first inning and added three more in the third to lead four to nothing.
- 1:22:37Cleveland getting their first hit here in the fourth inning.
- 1:22:40Hicks the plate to Wirtz is over.
- 1:22:41Fast ball at the knees, just like he falls.
- 1:22:46Three balls, two strikes from Victor Wirtz.
- 1:22:50The runner at first base is Larry Doby.
- 1:22:52He hit a handle, whooped around in blood field.
- 1:22:56He's on.
- 1:22:58Wasn't a solidly hit ball.
- 1:23:00Sort of loops out there.
- 1:23:02Down comes the pitch three-two.
- 1:23:03Swing on, there's a bounding ball.
- 1:23:04Hicks down to Baby Williams.
- 1:23:05He goes back to dark.
- 1:23:06The one out at second to throw the first not in time.
- 1:23:09So Doby is erased on the fourth out at second base from second base from Williams to stretch up Alvin Duff.
- 1:23:15Victor Wirtz outlegged the throw to first base.
- 1:23:18He's on at first with one down here in the last half before the fourth inning.
- 1:23:22About a reponse for Guckey.
- 1:23:23He's gone over one today.
- 1:23:24He's over two in the series.
- 1:23:26Guckey didn't get a chance to swing one time.
- 1:23:30First time he came up to the plate.
- 1:23:32He used Derrick's immediately for a pinch better.
- 1:23:44One out, one on.
- 1:23:45Last half of the course.
- 1:23:48Thanks for Guckey.
- 1:23:49Wearing number five, steps up to the plate.
- 1:23:51Right hand hitter.
- 1:23:52Guckey seems pretty much together.
- 1:23:54He's going to pitch over for strike one call.
- 1:23:57Ruben Gomez turned that three-quarter flat-on fastball.
- 1:24:03A tail around the left and deep.
- 1:24:04Guckey will hit that long one for you.
- 1:24:07He's got a lot of power in those wrists and forearms of his.
- 1:24:10Stuck a little color.
- 1:24:12Gomez third ball.
- 1:24:13It's hung and fouled on the third baseline.
- 1:24:16Out of all two strikes, Jockel Cronin, left-handed umpire, steps out behind Guckey.
- 1:24:20Guckey hits that ball back to the mound, a new one back to the mound to Gomez.
- 1:24:26That's some combination of left-handed Irishman.
- 1:24:30Now the open pitch here on Hank Budjeski.
- 1:24:33Gomez eyes his runner.
- 1:24:34This works the first.
- 1:24:36Second and third open, one out.
- 1:24:38Down comes the pitch.
- 1:24:39Budjeski snaps his head back and takes a curve right off the corner of the chin for a ball one.
- 1:24:44One ball and two strikes.
- 1:24:54Gomez not in a bit of a hurry.
- 1:24:58Takes not much time, but Budjeski steps away from the plate to get a double handful of dirt to dry his hands.
- 1:25:05Squeezes the neck end of the bat and he's ready to step up there now.
- 1:25:10There he goes, moving into batting spot.
- 1:25:13Rick Wirtz steps off at first.
- 1:25:15Lachman's not holding him on.
- 1:25:17But way back to his depth.
- 1:25:18First swing on by Budjeski.
- 1:25:20There's a two-hopper hit to Doc.
- 1:25:21He's up with a go to Williams who won the first.
- 1:25:23There's the first double play in the World Series.
- 1:25:27Hank Budjeski wrapped into the first double play.
- 1:25:29In the 1974 World Series, it goes to Malvin Doc, to Davey Williams, to Widy Lachman.
- 1:25:36Wirtz fell on the front end of the double play to retire the side here in the last half.
- 1:25:41No running, no runs, one hit, no errors, and there was no one left on.
- 1:25:48So the score at the end of four innings of play now is New York 4 and Cleveland nothing.
- 1:25:56Well, in these days of growing international tensions, national defense is everybody's business.
- 1:26:01And what is more important than a strong defense against atomic attack by air?
- 1:26:05The ground of global core in the United States and Canada
- 1:26:08and thousands of civilian volunteers who learn to spot and identify low-flying planes
- 1:26:13that cannot be picked up by radar.
- 1:26:15Your contribution will be only a few hours a week at an observation post
- 1:26:19or a silver center near your home.
- 1:26:21The silver wings of the DOC will show your neighbors that you are playing a key role in your country's defense.
- 1:26:28Write or call your local Civil Defense Center in Canada
- 1:26:32or write to the Air Defense Command, St. Louis, Quebec.
- 1:26:40Now for inning number five.
- 1:26:42Willie Mays, the leadoff for the Giants.
- 1:26:44He has one for two.
- 1:26:46Hit a single to Redfield in the first inning to get his first World Series base hit.
- 1:26:50And Tom Thompson followed by Dusty Rhodes, who again has been the difference in the ballgame.
- 1:26:54Art Huddleman delivers to Willie Mays.
- 1:26:56He throws the crossfire across the Japanese first strike.
- 1:27:00Art Huddleman and release ball to Mike Garcia.
- 1:27:05So it means that we have an entire new Cleveland, we have a new Cleveland battering.
- 1:27:09The pitch to the plate for Willie Mays is over.
- 1:27:13What low for ball one?
- 1:27:14One ball and one strike.
- 1:27:21Huddleman pumps, kicks and throws one-one curve ball.
- 1:27:23Willie Mays swings on it and hits a high fly ball to the right side off the left field line.
- 1:27:29In a few minutes to go, the Cleveland has a new battery.
- 1:27:32That's right, when one man has changed the battery with you, and Art Huddleman is the pitcher now.
- 1:27:36That's going to be the name of the word battery.
- 1:27:38You know I've been using that term for years without knowing just how it began.
- 1:27:42For years without knowing just how it began.
- 1:27:44And now I know because the answer is right there in the select World Series book,
- 1:27:47along with the answers of other important baseball questions.
- 1:27:50Willie Mays after the next pitch with the high fly ball in the big left center field.
- 1:27:54There goes Larry Doeby back.
- 1:27:55He's still going back.
- 1:27:56He's under it and he makes the catch.
- 1:27:58Well, Willie Mays is out.
- 1:28:02Doeby taking care of that one.
- 1:28:05Doeby slides around out there in center field like Breeze Likens.
- 1:28:09Thompson is about an hour for New York.
- 1:28:11Hank Thompson is in left-handed.
- 1:28:15The Giants have four runs right now and five base hits.
- 1:28:18And that's our clear.
- 1:28:21They've committed no errors this afternoon.
- 1:28:24A slow curve there by Adam Minnis taken by left-handed batting Thompson.
- 1:28:28That's not a run.
- 1:28:30The Giants took their own established game.
- 1:28:32That's 10 to 5 men.
- 1:28:33They're under a total of 17 for the series.
- 1:28:36Adam Minnis is late.
- 1:28:37Thompson takes the curve and it's over.
- 1:28:40One ball, one strike.
- 1:28:41One out, out to the third.
- 1:28:43No base runners for the Giants.
- 1:28:45They're leading here by the score of four to nothing.
- 1:28:48Doeby has no runs.
- 1:28:49On one base hit they've committed a pair of errors.
- 1:28:52And that's 10 to 2 men.
- 1:28:53Thompson swings on the next pitch, loops it out into left center field.
- 1:28:55It's in there for the base hit.
- 1:28:56Doeby comes in quickly to pick up.
- 1:28:57There's no chance he's going to try for two.
- 1:28:59Doeby still comes hurriedly into second slide and Thompson's in there.
- 1:29:10Dora Thompson gets a double into left center field.
- 1:29:15That'll be hit number one off our Haldeman.
- 1:29:17Hit number six.
- 1:29:19That's the first extra base hit other than Dusty Rhodes with two home runs for the Giants.
- 1:29:29They're not going on here.
- 1:29:30Mr. Finney, Dusty Rhodes coming up there.
- 1:29:32Here's a real chem.
- 1:29:33So this time, Dusty, you're not going to talk it for us.
- 1:29:37Dusty Rhodes is bringing in intentional base on ball.
- 1:29:41That'll be the first walk by Haldeman, the fourth walk picked up by the Giants here this afternoon.
- 1:29:47They respect his bat.
- 1:29:50They might not worry too much about him out in the field, but when he comes up there swinging at numbers,
- 1:29:53he's an all-time swagger and they say, uh-uh.
- 1:29:57So he steps out to first base now.
- 1:29:59I'm with one of the runners at second and first.
- 1:30:04The batter is David Williams.
- 1:30:06David, who sacrificed successfully in the third inning, and I was charged to go here.
- 1:30:12He very successfully sacrificed. Please know, I mean, the success of his sacrifice was it was a screen time,
- 1:30:18got the run in.
- 1:30:20Now they're ready for Haldeman's delivery.
- 1:30:22Pass ball, half a fifth on the inside corner today.
- 1:30:25The winnings for Carl Schacht.
- 1:30:28Haldeman's setting up the base of the hand, inspects those runners.
- 1:30:31Overhand pass ball.
- 1:30:32From down his reach, he tries to get a kick and gets it out close to the available one.
- 1:30:35He's going over to first base.
- 1:30:36There's the count in time.
- 1:30:37He comes up for the nice save. A clear into the first.

- 1:31:28He goes for two.
- 1:31:30He's not too comfortable with the ball in the first game of the series.
- 1:31:33Thompson whippers.
- 1:31:37Now the one and old beloved, Haldeman.
- 1:31:40He deals off his dreads, throws the pass ball and whips it in the left hip.
- 1:31:43Great hit.
- 1:31:44Then comes Thompson at the score.
- 1:31:45Williams goes to second to hold on.
- 1:31:48Got some singles in the left.

- 1:32:04Thompson up his back to the ground.
- 1:32:05He's taking up his seventh base hit.
- 1:32:09A lot of coming up to the plate now is Luton-Jomers.
- 1:32:12He's lined up for the field.
- 1:32:13The very good, the good in the middle.
- 1:32:14He's not getting a third and stuck out.
- 1:32:17There's Jomers.
- 1:32:18Thompson's up there now looking for his eighth base hit.
- 1:32:21He's got a hit.
- 1:32:22Haldeman on third.
- 1:32:24And Williams activity down the bullpen now.
- 1:32:26Cleveland-Wilson.
- 1:32:30He's got a second for him.
- 1:32:33Hart-Haldeman gets ready.
- 1:32:35The limits to go now.
- 1:32:36He's going to go down the bullpond on the third base run.
- 1:32:39Raynard-Escie.
- 1:32:40Ricky-Rick-Hander down on the bullpen for Cleveland.
- 1:32:52Hart-Haldeman on the mound.
- 1:32:53Ready to put the ball down there.
- 1:32:56Williams at second.
- 1:32:57Williams on third.
- 1:33:03The first round of eight runs got it in for the Giants.
- 1:33:06That's five runs got it in for the Giants.
- 1:33:09That's 12 all told.
- 1:33:11Jomers and Batten-Levitt are in the Williams is on the second.
- 1:33:14Browns is looking for the Giants.
- 1:33:15Hart-Haldeman settled down to work on fast pass the ball.
- 1:33:19Out charge for the half of that one.
- 1:33:22Jomers half from Belmont-Straight.
- 1:33:32Jomers on the top of the stretch.
- 1:33:33Looks to Jomers.
- 1:33:34A little swim overhand pass ball and pours it right through with the knee.
- 1:33:37That's like two.
- 1:33:40Two balls, one strike.
- 1:33:51Williams ready to step off second.
- 1:33:54That just made Jomers come on.
- 1:33:55There's a bounding ball hit down.
- 1:33:57The first base run gets it all.
- 1:33:58It's a touch of a line.
- 1:33:59Went to the first base ball and kicked out before it went to the back.
- 1:34:04That's what is known as a snake hopper.
- 1:34:08It's wiggling all over the place.
- 1:34:10There's Williams.
- 1:34:11He's running on that one half.
- 1:34:12He's moving all the way back to second.
- 1:34:15Williams got there second.
- 1:34:21Jomers on the top of the stretch.
- 1:34:23Down.
- 1:34:24One run is through the hooker.
- 1:34:26The ball's been up and he's over the ground.
- 1:34:29The runner's got 60 seconds.
- 1:34:30He's down.
- 1:34:31Jomers got the time attack of low and he's on the hard.
- 1:34:35Number 28, the pitch.
- 1:34:36They're made by Hart-Haldeman.
- 1:34:39One and two, three.
- 1:34:45So that's Jomers.
- 1:34:46Right side of the area.
- 1:34:47That's Hart.
- 1:34:48Right side again with the inning by Jomers.
- 1:34:51And that's the pitch from here for number four.
- 1:34:53The Giants are running through the fair for New York.
- 1:34:55For New York, they're sending one run.
- 1:34:57And she bases it.
- 1:34:59There's no worries.
- 1:35:00And she makes the ball out of bounds.
- 1:35:02Seven men have been standing here now by the Giants.
- 1:35:05Going about a third of the time.
- 1:35:07And the second run, at the end, the four and one half and eight.
- 1:35:11The New York Giants five and the three and the Indians nothing.
- 1:35:15All at one stop.
- 1:35:17The difference is three, but you'd better hurry.
- 1:35:19It was a sellout last year and the new and large division was going even faster.
- 1:35:26They're now ready to step into the last half of the first inning and to complete the ball game.
- 1:35:30And that means that our good friend Jimmy Dudley takes over right here in his own stompin' ground.
- 1:35:34So Jimmy, we're ready to listen to you fellas.
- 1:35:38Thank you, Al.
- 1:35:39And here we go into the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:35:41There's Dilley.
- 1:35:42The Indians right fielder leading off of the drive against Ruman Ruben Gomez with one wail of a pitch of that card.
- 1:35:48The first pitch is a strike with a fastball hitting the outside corner of the nine.
- 1:35:52Dilley the first time up in the second inning to a base on ball.
- 1:35:55The only hit given up by Gomez was a pop-flash from Yobaydobi.
- 1:35:59Next pitch is thrown on the ground.
- 1:36:00The ball is passed baby-winner, Bender White-Center for a base hit.
- 1:36:05Dilley coming through with the Indian second hit of the day.
- 1:36:08He's on first with nobody out and the batter is number two, George Strickland.
- 1:36:14Gomez has been a very solid pitcher.
- 1:36:18Just the second hit he has given up.
- 1:36:21He has struck out only one man, walked through, but has been command in command of the situation throughout the entire game up to this point.
- 1:36:29Strickland the right hand got a step turn.
- 1:36:34Wings on the first pitch and hits the far ball into left field.
- 1:36:37Bestie Rhodes moves in.
- 1:36:38Remember this one now.
- 1:36:39He has it easily throughout number one.
- 1:36:41Strickland five-two.
- 1:36:42Bestie Rhodes in left field.
- 1:36:45One out.
- 1:36:46Runner on first and the batter is Jim Hugen, the Indian second.
- 1:36:50May now be a game start to work down on the Indian bullpen.
- 1:36:54There is a possibility that Huddleman may be listed for a pinter.
- 1:36:58The middle inning of the ballgame.
- 1:37:00An hour low pair would like to get something started with a game off to a solid five-to-nothing lead.
- 1:37:08Dilley takes the lead.
- 1:37:09First pitch to Hugen is a set call with a serve getting the outback runner.
- 1:37:14Gomez is not only fast, he has been very quick with all of his pitches.
- 1:37:20The serve ball, the free ball, and the fast ball.
- 1:37:24He won 17 ballgames during the regular season, losing nine.
- 1:37:29Next to Hugen swings and misses a bad pitch.
- 1:37:32Good stop by the catcher, wet, wet from.
- 1:37:36Going through the count on the batter.
- 1:37:41He outfields around to the left.
- 1:37:43Hugen is first time up in the second inning.
- 1:37:45Grounded out to the third baseman, Hank Johnson.
- 1:37:47Boy, what an incident.
- 1:37:48He has played a lot of fine ball in this series.
- 1:37:51That's right.
- 1:37:52Next to Hugen swings and hits the fly ball out into left field.
- 1:37:55Jones moving in fast, on to the track now, close to the foul line.
- 1:37:58He makes the catch, just in fair territory.
- 1:38:01And they're a few out.
- 1:38:04Hugen glides the road in left.
- 1:38:07And the picture of Art Huddeman is blue.
- 1:38:14And we'll catch somebody coming out of there in just a moment.
- 1:38:18It's going to be Rudy Rigolato, number eight.
- 1:38:20Rudy Rigolato, utility infielder, coming in to bat for Huddeman.
- 1:38:32Rigolato is a right-hand batter.
- 1:38:38Roy who played one year of organized baseball before moving up to the playing club.
- 1:38:44Looks exceptionally good in playing games and was given an opportunity to play third base.
- 1:38:50And Al Rosen moves over to play first base for the Indians.
- 1:38:56Now seven into the bat, it's about two out and the runner-on first.
- 1:38:59Cilley let off of the single, but he killed it first.
- 1:39:10Art Huddeman playing straight away.
- 1:39:13From his pick as a strike, the curve ball, knee-high.
- 1:39:17That curve has worked to perfection for him this afternoon.
- 1:39:20We have noted many of the Indian batters looking back to the young fire
- 1:39:24and great goodbyes on the call of the pitch which is in there, just about knee-high.
- 1:39:29The next pick, Rigolato fouls into the bridge, it's like two.
- 1:39:34Going to the count.
- 1:39:38The Giants, after winning the first two games in New York,
- 1:39:41moving out in front of this one, five to nothing.
- 1:39:44We're at Cleveland's huge municipal stadium
- 1:39:47before approximately 70,000 people this afternoon.
- 1:39:54Right to the count.
- 1:39:56Batter and deck is out here.
- 1:39:59Cilley ready to travel, leads off the pitch,
- 1:40:01the point and the ground ball slowly hits to the left out of the infield.
- 1:40:04Thompson charges it up a bit, the photo first and Rigolato is out.
- 1:40:07Another fine play by Hinchom from the third base on a slow roller down the third base line.
- 1:40:12Three guys, man.
- 1:40:14And for the Indians in the fifth, no runs, one hit, one man left.
- 1:40:18At the end of five, the score is New York, five to nothing.
- 1:40:25Early win of the Indians who lost a real heartbreaker yesterday, giving up only four hits.
- 1:40:31It's as if when you're all in, there's nothing more breaking than a quick flick to let it go.
- 1:40:36It really makes you look good and feel good.
- 1:40:39And early's the boy to know.
- 1:40:41You do look better and feel better too.
- 1:40:43Try a refreshing shaving cream shave with today's one-teethed Gillette racer.
- 1:40:54Going into the first half of the sixth inning, we have a new pitcher coming on for the Indians.
- 1:40:58Ray Noleste, young right hander.
- 1:41:00While we're waiting for him, he'll charge now ten seconds for patient identification.
- 1:41:05This is New Toulouse, a radio network for all America.
- 1:41:09Will he be able to?
- 1:41:12And now back at municipal stadium.
- 1:41:16Here in Cleveland, the Giants leading five to nothing.
- 1:41:20The first half of the sixth inning, the new pitcher, Ray Noleste.
- 1:41:24We're leaving on Houghton and we're two innings of the ballgame.
- 1:41:28Gave up two hits, lost one, struck out one, and about one run.
- 1:41:33Four of the dad runs are charged to my daughter.
- 1:41:41Noleste is a member of our Lopez pitching staff in the release department.
- 1:41:50With one of the twin firemen, along with Ray Noleste, is John Martin.
- 1:41:56And those two boys have done a whale of a job with him.
- 1:42:00The pitcher's record is three and three, but he's started only two ballgames.
- 1:42:06Without the regular season, he worked in 42 games and closer to the man's run average of 2.22.
- 1:42:17First man to face him will be Wiley Loughman.
- 1:42:20Outerman came in on the fourth inning, faced the job of the batting order.
- 1:42:25And now Ray Noleste, the third Indian pitcher.
- 1:42:29A giant lead, five to nothing. The first pitch to Loughman is four, one, two, high.
- 1:42:34Noleste is what the boys referred to as a hard nose.
- 1:42:37The lad who comes from there in release just wears back and really fires.
- 1:42:43Next pitch is two high, another fastball taking off.
- 1:42:46High and outside, this time the count is false and no strikes.
- 1:42:50Last year he played under Verdy Kovitz, then manager of the Indianapolis Indians and the American Association.
- 1:42:56Moved up with the fan club this year.
- 1:42:58The two and nothing pitchers are strike.
- 1:43:00Right over about an inch high, the count is two and one.
- 1:43:04Hank Magiacchi, the Indian third baseman, is Ray's ballgame.
- 1:43:08And on the edge of the infield bat, the outfield straight away.
- 1:43:12The two and pitchers high for ball three.
- 1:43:15Three and one the count.
- 1:43:18Loughman led off with a single in the first inning.
- 1:43:22The Giants went on the score run.
- 1:43:24Added three in the third and one in the fifth, the lead by a two and nothing.
- 1:43:29Here's the wind up in the three one pitch.
- 1:43:31A foul hit back into the stand, dropped to the right of the plate.
- 1:43:34Out of play and the count is ball three, strike two.
- 1:43:41It's a very happy, hot baseball bouncing around.
- 1:43:44It's a hot from the upper deck and down below.
- 1:43:56There they pitch to pitch.
- 1:43:57Here's ball four, outside.
- 1:44:00Loughman takes the base on balls.
- 1:44:11Loughman on first with a base on balls.
- 1:44:13He's the first man to show his future as a team Indian
- 1:44:38captain of the New York Giants, one of the two players on this ball club.
- 1:44:45This is a 15th World Series game.
- 1:44:47Next man up is Don Neely.
- 1:44:49He swings on the first pitch and tops it up to the left out of the infield.
- 1:44:52Hank Majeski is under and he has it for the second out.
- 1:44:57They're two gone.
- 1:44:59And coming up there's Willie Maties, number 24.
- 1:45:04The Giants in the field in batting camp in the National League.
- 1:45:07Put out the regular season.
- 1:45:12Neither batting champion has been able to do very much in this World Series up to date.
- 1:45:19Two outs with the runner on second.
- 1:45:21Don has his first pitch.
- 1:45:22May's playing to Mary's face.
- 1:45:23Foul ball's going out into right field.
- 1:45:24It's got a drop and that's a base hit.
- 1:45:26And Loughman raising around third.
- 1:45:28It's coming out of store.
- 1:45:29The throw in is cut off by Wirt holding May's at first base.
- 1:45:33The May's come through with his second hit today.
- 1:45:38And the Giants take a lead of six to nothing.
- 1:45:45The next batter is Hank Thompson.
- 1:45:48He has a perfect day, two outs and a double.
- 1:45:52And give him a lot of credit for legging out that base hit for a double.
- 1:45:56Last time up in the fifth inning.
- 1:45:58Left hand batter swings on the first pitch and tops it up down the third base line.
- 1:46:02Hank Magestue moves over in the foul territory and now straddle line to make sure he didn't say a pair of fairs.
- 1:46:08Thompson tops to Hank Magestue.
- 1:46:12In the sixth inning for the Giants, score one run on one hit, one walk, one man left.
- 1:46:19And we're going to the last half of the sixth inning with a score.
- 1:46:22New York Giants six to seven, Indians nothing.
- 1:46:27And whether you know your baseball inside or out, our adjusted national fans,
- 1:46:32you'll get a real kick out of a new Gillette World Series record book.
- 1:46:36Small enough to fit in your pocket, big enough to answer thousands of questions,
- 1:46:40this handy reference book will get you more fun out of baseball.
- 1:46:44It has the score of every World Series game, winning tickets, all-time record of every player,
- 1:46:49diagrams, dimensions, and shooting arrangements of every clock.
- 1:46:53This year's fair rushes, basic rules, scoring instructions, just about everything.
- 1:46:58To get a copy free, ask for that Gillette Super Speed Racer set we showed you about.
- 1:47:03A dollar takes home a razor, blue blade dispenser, travel suit, book, and all.
- 1:47:08But don't delay, the supply is getting low.
- 1:47:19And now going into the last half of the sixth inning, it will be Al Smith leading off.
- 1:47:30Ruben Gomez has completed his warm-up shows and is all ready to work on Al Smith.
- 1:47:34That's why she walked in the first inning, flying back to the pitcher in the third.
- 1:47:39Swings on the first pitch, it's a bounding ball to the shortstop.
- 1:47:41Big hop taken by a guard to throw the first and the stripper's out.
- 1:47:45One pitch, one man out.
- 1:47:47Six-three in case he is going along with it.
- 1:47:51Give us an idea of how effective Gomez has been.
- 1:47:55The last three, he has thrown just 33 pitches.
- 1:48:02The batter is Bobby O'Helene, 0-1 officially, sacrifice in the first inning.
- 1:48:13He picks it up and Gomez took this ball and went outside, a curve ball breaking away from him.
- 1:48:22The outfield is playing him straight away.
- 1:48:25Bobby O'Helene, Indian second baseman, batting champion of the American League.
- 1:48:32There is ball two, high and outside, two and no count.
- 1:48:40Gomez has given up just two hits, a bargain baseman single for Larry Doby in the fourth inning,
- 1:48:46a single on the ground into right center by Dave Philly to open the fifth inning.
- 1:48:53Next pitch is a strike, hitting the inside corner.
- 1:48:56And that has been Gomez throughout the football game up to this point, hitting that ball just where he wants to.
- 1:49:06Ball two, strike one.
- 1:49:08Into the windup, it's hit there and Gomez now has the count of ball two and strike two.
- 1:49:14A real swung on that ball.
- 1:49:16I believe he foul-tipped it out of the catcher's grab, it dropped to the ground.
- 1:49:21Turn two, umpire Conlon picks up the ball.
- 1:49:28Johnny Cucinello coaching the third base, guarding the third man down to the batter.
- 1:49:33Red press to go through at first.
- 1:49:35One out and nobody on in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:49:39Capella steps out.
- 1:49:45Now in position, the two two-pitchers, one on the left, a five-ball hit into left field,
- 1:49:49but that's DeRose moving back, avenged it, and has it all the way for out number two.
- 1:49:54Two gone, as DeRose fired to left fielder, that's DeRose,
- 1:50:01who has certainly been one of the outstanding performers in this World Series.
- 1:50:08Suggesting to work like magic for Leo DeRose, who's a giant manager.
- 1:50:13Barry Doby steps into the batter's box.
- 1:50:16He has one out of two.
- 1:50:18Left hand batter takes a strike with a fast ball, way through the middle.
- 1:50:22Strike one called.
- 1:50:26Strikes are very much overtaxed.
- 1:50:31Well, great day here at Cleveland.
- 1:50:33The next pitch is ball one high and outside.
- 1:50:35The count is even up, one and one.
- 1:50:43Two out and nobody on.
- 1:50:44They're playing DeRose to pull.
- 1:50:47And well around to right.
- 1:50:49The second one pitch is a change up, ball two, with over but high, ball two and strike one.
- 1:51:01Romesh Dexter-Shine from Shackler-Weston.
- 1:51:06He walks into the windup.
- 1:51:08The pitch and Doby swings, it's a top-five into left center.
- 1:51:11Over under this one is Willie Mays, and he makes the catch.
- 1:51:14Mays back-drops from the ball.
- 1:51:16I think you believe he's having trouble, but he just wants to give it that basket treatment.
- 1:51:20He holds the glove right there and around the belt.
- 1:51:24Most of those catches.
- 1:51:26Doby's drive through Mays and center.
- 1:51:28Three up and three down for the Indians.
- 1:51:30No runs, no hits.
- 1:51:32Nothing is lost, and at the end of sixth the score is New York six, Cleveland nothing.
- 1:51:40Merwin Bessie-Rose blasted that long homer yesterday at the Polar Ground to New York.
- 1:51:45I thought about the chapter called Hempstown winning baseball in the New Gillette World Series record book.
- 1:51:51Among other things, it illustrates the draft-like swing that's best for connection with those long low ends.
- 1:51:57This is just one of the many things that makes this book so valuable to have handy anytime baseball is played or discussed.
- 1:52:09Now to six runs in total.
- 1:52:12The Giants have six runs, eight hits, no errors.
- 1:52:15The Indians no runs, two hits, and two errors.
- 1:52:19The Indians have left three men on the bases.
- 1:52:21The Giants have left a total of eight.
- 1:52:29It'll be Bessie-Rose leading off in the first half of the seven-tenning.
- 1:52:33Many of the fans here at the stadium have come up for the Giants half of the seven-tenning, the old lucky seven-tenning stretch.
- 1:52:46Number 26, Bessie-Rose.
- 1:52:53Wayne Oleski.
- 1:52:55A swing and a miss on the first six.
- 1:52:58Oleski working into the window very apparently came out with a platform.
- 1:53:02Boy, it's over to the window to put it in late years.
- 1:53:06Strike one.
- 1:53:08The next six, a swing and a miss.
- 1:53:10Six, strike two.
- 1:53:16John Fiery, Al Barlich at second base, now moves over to the first-day side of the keystone.
- 1:53:25Here's the windup.
- 1:53:26The next six, a swing and a miss.
- 1:53:39A rookie by the name of Wayne Oleski, caps the mighty Bessie-Rose.
- 1:53:45He struck him out.
- 1:53:48The fans here get a tremendous kick out of it.
- 1:53:52Henry Williams has got a swing to come up first with the miss and he strikes one.
- 1:54:04George, of course, has been the sensation of this World Series thus far.
- 1:54:09Next pitch by Oleski with Williams is ball one, upside and lower the carry.
- 1:54:13Count is even up, one and one.
- 1:54:15One out of the first half of the seven-tenning.
- 1:54:17The Giants lead six to nothing.
- 1:54:21This is ball two, over but low.
- 1:54:24The count is two and one.
- 1:54:26He doesn't waste any time.
- 1:54:29Takes a short windup and gets pumped.
- 1:54:38He had 52 strikeouts in 89 innings in the regular season.
- 1:54:43Williams swings with miss a strike two.
- 1:54:50Ball two and strike two, the count, one out and nobody on.
- 1:54:55Oleski, the third, Henry and Fiction.
- 1:55:01The circle kick, ball three, over but high and the swing is out.
- 1:55:05Full count of three and two.
- 1:55:13Oleski came on in the sixth inning, walked one man and gave up a hit.
- 1:55:18A single for Willie Mays.
- 1:55:20Next pitch, Williams swings with the ground ball to Fiction, it's short.
- 1:55:23Up with it, there's the short of first and Williams is out.
- 1:55:27Grounding out, short to first.
- 1:55:29There too gone and the batter is Wess Wessam.
- 1:55:33Wessam has one out of three.
- 1:55:36A single is last time, up to drive and a run.
- 1:55:39In the second inning he struck out.
- 1:55:41In the third he's rounded out as he attempted to pull away from a pitch.
- 1:55:45He hit a little rounder right back to the pitch and right back here.
- 1:55:49Oleski's first pitch to him is just right for the curve, working to the outside front of Wessam.
- 1:55:58The Giants lead, quick to nothing, the third game of the 1954 World Series.
- 1:56:08Oleski leads our straight away for Wessam.
- 1:56:11Oleski okays the time.
- 1:56:13That's fastball popping out of Heegans glove, rolling off to the left of the plate.
- 1:56:20Ball one and strike one.
- 1:56:26Now Oleski's dad played for the Boston Red Sox quite some years ago.
- 1:56:34He's an infielder.
- 1:56:36Here's the windup, the one and one pitch.
- 1:56:39Wessam swings and misses, it's strike two.
- 1:56:43One and two the count on the batting.
- 1:56:45Two out and nobody on, the first half of the seventh.
- 1:56:56The one and two pitch.
- 1:56:57Wessam swings and misses, he's struck him out.
- 1:57:03A fine performance by the rookie right-hander.
- 1:57:07In the seventh for the Giants, no runs, no hits, nothing across.
- 1:57:11And the fans now come up with a last half of the seventh inning, no home stretch.
- 1:57:18At the end of six and a half minutes, the short is New York six, even nothing.
- 1:57:25There you could have been with us on the baseball front the last night.
- 1:57:28Four teams were aboard and you never saw a finer-looking bunch of young men.
- 1:57:32They're sharp, they're alert, and they have the money to buy the things they want.
- 1:57:36So when I tell you they shave with a Gillette razor, almost to a man, it ought to mean a lot to you.
- 1:57:41I know how they shave because I see them in the club houses.
- 1:57:44They want to look clean, well-shaved.
- 1:57:47They want the refreshed feeling they get from a shower.
- 1:57:50Shaving cream and a fat, comfortable shave with a Gillette Blue Blade in the Gillette Super Speed razor.
- 1:57:56Those are beautiful blades.
- 1:57:58They're nicely honed, smoothly chopped.
- 1:58:00The quality is so uniform that each of them says, you'll never know how easy until you try.
- 1:58:06Let's give them a hand at the sensors with safety compartments for use rates.
- 1:58:10Twenty for 98 cents, 10 for 49 cents.
- 1:58:13$71,500 at this time.
- 1:58:16Applause.
- 1:58:22And now back here at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, the home of the American Legion.
- 1:58:26Applause.
- 1:58:28The attendance, $71,555.
- 1:58:31Last of the sevens in this week's league jobs.
- 1:58:35First pitch during by Gomez is ball one, inside and low.
- 1:58:44Ball on the count.
- 1:58:47Bryant's lead, picked him up, and there's ball two, a fast ball.
- 1:58:51Too close to the batting. Ball cannot strike.
- 1:59:00The outfield is shaded around club right.
- 1:59:02Where's it go for two?
- 1:59:05Connected.
- 1:59:06Press call.
- 1:59:08And in the outside corner with the two balls.
- 1:59:12Ball two, strike one.
- 1:59:19What a maze moving around in Tennessee.
- 1:59:21Now it's just about straight away.
- 1:59:25Next pitch is one, a major drive for and get out of the left corner.
- 1:59:27Maze is chasing after that ball, and it is on its way for a home run.
- 1:59:31Applause.
- 1:59:50Big work. Indian's first baseman coming up with hit number three and the Indian's first run of the day, a home run over the right center field fence.
- 2:00:02The low line drive, not a towering moment.
- 2:00:06Missed the ball. That was a very solid big hit.
- 2:00:09And the next batter is Hank Mageski.
- 2:00:15Oh, buddy out, Mageski, right hand batter, steps in.
- 2:00:17Here's go for two.
- 2:00:19And he's going to a double play last time up.
- 2:00:24Seventy-one thousand, five hundred and fifty-five fans.
- 2:00:29Getting a big kick out of things.
- 2:00:31Work comes through with his home run.
- 2:00:34Now new houses.
- 2:00:36Left handers start warming up on the Indian both ends.
- 2:00:39All right, the first pitch to Mageski.
- 2:00:41Ball went outside with a third.
- 2:00:47Ball on the count.
- 2:00:52Batter on deck is very silly.
- 2:00:55The Giants lead six to one.
- 2:00:57The Indians start supporting the white watch with that home run.
- 2:01:01Next pitch is ball two inside.
- 2:01:04Ball two, no strikes.
- 2:01:11The boys down in the Giants, little game, looking in towards the dugout.
- 2:01:15So far there's been no action in the Giants both ends.
- 2:01:22Nobody out, nobody on.
- 2:01:23The pitch is eight strikes, no mares.
- 2:01:25Play the curve right over the heart of the plate.
- 2:01:29Ball two and strike one.
- 2:01:34Giants lead six to one.
- 2:01:46The Giants lead six to one.
- 2:01:55That brings up number 17, Dave Philly.
- 2:02:05In two trips to the plate, he has a walk and a single.
- 2:02:08His single was a ground ball in the right center.
- 2:02:11Looks at ball one outside and low.
- 2:02:13First pitch.
- 2:02:15Ball on the count.
- 2:02:20Batter on deck is George Strickland.
- 2:02:24Go case to time.
- 2:02:26The pitch is eight strikes with a fastball knee high.
- 2:02:29Even up, ball one and strike one.
- 2:02:37Works his home run where his hit number three off go med.
- 2:02:41The one and one pitch.
- 2:02:42Philly takes the strike with a change up.
- 2:02:46Ball one and strike two.
- 2:02:48Now steps back to talk to the umpire, Jaco Conlon.
- 2:02:58Ball one and strike two.
- 2:03:05Philly asking umpire Conlon where that ball was and he told him.
- 2:03:11Right over.
- 2:03:12Ball two high and outside.
- 2:03:25The outfielders are shaded just a bit toward right for Philly.
- 2:03:29Here's the wind up.
- 2:03:30The two to pitch.
- 2:03:31Just swing and a miss.
- 2:03:32He's chucking out.
- 2:03:34Philly goes down swinging.
- 2:03:40That is the second strike out for Ruben Gomez.
- 2:03:47He has walked only two batters.
- 2:03:53Now it's George Strickland stepping into the batter's box.
- 2:03:56Coming up with two out and nobody on.
- 2:04:01Takes a fastball strike right in there.
- 2:04:07Last half of the seventh inning the Giants lead by a score of six to one.
- 2:04:13Next pitch Strickland swings and pops this one up to the right side of the infield.
- 2:04:17Going back on the edge of the grass is Whitey Lockman and he makes the catch.
- 2:04:22The third out and the Indians in the seventh get one run, one hit.
- 2:04:27Big works his home run.
- 2:04:30At the end of seventh the score is New York six Cleveland one.
- 2:04:36New York's New York City batter, who won the American Lake batting title with a 3.41 average, has gone 2 for 11 so far in this World Series of 1954.
- 2:04:45He has quite a jinx to overcome because batting champions generally do poorly in the series.
- 2:04:51To mention a few from the all-time series roster in the Gillette World Series record books,
- 2:04:56Ted Williams averages 200 and Muzio 256 and Jackie Robinson 242.
- 2:05:05The Gillette World Series is the best four out of seven.
- 2:05:09The Giants won the first two games in New York and lead the Indians on their home grounds right here in Cleveland in this third game by a score of six to one as we head into the first half of the eighth inning.
- 2:05:21The Giants will lead off with Richard Gomez getting a nice hand from the crowd as he comes up.
- 2:05:29He's got him a fine performance.
- 2:05:37Right hand got him. He lined the center field and struck out twice.
- 2:05:42Dallas gets first pitch. He swings and misses. Strike one.
- 2:05:53Next tricks to him. He swings on it and pops it up to the infield. Right by second base is George Strickland. He makes the catch. We're out number one.
- 2:06:03Gomez pops to George Strickland, the shortstop.
- 2:06:10And now the top of the batting order.
- 2:06:13Lockman, left hand batter number 25. He has a single and a walk in four trips to the plate.
- 2:06:25Stands deep in the batter's box and chokes up on the bat. Swings on the first pitch. It's a ground ball to Wirtz at first.
- 2:06:30Wirtz takes it, races to the bag. Ahead of the runner, we're up number two.
- 2:06:34Lockman grounded out to Wirtz unassisted. That brings up Alvin Dock.
- 2:06:42And nobody on. First half of the eighth inning.
- 2:06:51Dock, the right hand batter, has one out of three officially. He sacrificed his last trip to the plate.
- 2:06:58And he tries to hold back with swings and hits and easy grounder. Right back to the pitcher. Now let's get takes.
- 2:07:03First to first ends, the Giants are retired in order. Three up and three down. No runs, no hits for the Giants.
- 2:07:12And going into the last half of the eighth inning, the score is New York 6-3-1.
- 2:07:19Say, have you ever noticed that guys who use Gillette razors are pretty good routers for the kind of shape they get?
- 2:07:25And that goes for the men who use Gillette three-piece razors, too. Now here's a very special, how do you do to them?
- 2:07:32And a very special message, too. The Gillette three-piece razor is a fine shaving instrument. No question about it.
- 2:07:39What we'd like to have you try our one-piece Gillette super speed razor. It delivers the same smooth, refreshing shave.
- 2:07:46But they are so much easier to come by. Please change in an instant. Nothing to take apart. And simply rinse under a faucet to clean.
- 2:07:54One dollar will modernize your Gillette shaving equipment. Buy a Gillette super speed razor and blue blade dispenser in a travel case.
- 2:08:02Right now you get the Gillette World Series record book attached free. A pretty big dollar's worth if you ask us.
- 2:08:14And now before we go into the last half of the eighth inning, let's pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 2:08:20This is Mutual, the radio network for all America.
- 2:08:29WGM Chicago.
- 2:08:36And now back at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, the last half of the eighth and a pinchhead are coming up for Jim Higgins.
- 2:08:42Kyle Lopez calls upon his reserve to get something started for his tribe. Trailing in the series, two games to nothing, and trailing in this ball game, six to one.
- 2:08:53Bill Glenn is batting for Higgins, left-hand batter. Swings on the first pitch and hits the flat ball into right field.
- 2:08:59Coming over hard for it is Gillette. He drops the ball. Gillette's going for two. He runs some under his cap. Gillette picks it up.
- 2:09:05They throw in, but too late. And it's in his second base.
- 2:09:13That is going to be a two-base hit. A fine try by Don Mueller. He got a glove on the ball, but it was a sinking line drive.
- 2:09:24He couldn't handle it. He dropped to the ground for a two-base hit.
- 2:09:30Another pinchhead is coming out. Dale Mitchell, number three, batting for Raynor Lesky. Mitchell is the left-hander.
- 2:09:44Hails from Oklahoma City, product of Oklahoma University. Mitchell, during the regular season, batted 283, but was used mostly in the pinchhead a role.
- 2:09:57Lloyd Wilhelm, a right-hander, and Wendy McCall, a left-hander, starts warming up for the New York Giants.
- 2:10:07First pitch to Mitchell. He swings and hits the ground ball to the first baseman.
- 2:10:10Lachman takes it, races to the bag. As Glenn moves to third, Mitchell is out.
- 2:10:15Mitchell, grounding out on the first pitch. Lachman, unaffected.
- 2:10:21Glenn is on third, and the top of the batting order is coming up.
- 2:10:31Don Mueller, left-hander, is now warming up for the Indians, so is Al Maradon, a catcher.
- 2:10:37Al Smith is the batter. He has to walk in three trips.
- 2:10:46First pitch to him is a strike. Curve ball is good to the knees. Right over, strike one. Glenn is on third with one out.
- 2:10:57Last half of the eighth inning, the Giants lead by a score of six to one.
- 2:11:02Outfield, rolled around toward left. Smith, standing deep in the batter's box, well back of the plate. Takes ball one outside and low with a curve, breaking into the dirt.
- 2:11:21Bobby Avila is on deck. Here's the windup. Glenn makes a false start from third. The pitch is swung on, fouled, down the third baseline. Out of play.
- 2:11:33Ball one and strike two. Gomez, keeping the ball low to Smith. He fouled that one off his foot.
- 2:11:54Quite a bit of pain. He steps again back from the plate.
- 2:12:01Right this way, he was a protected thin guard. Smith is always fouling the ball off onto his own foot, bouncing it up and hitting him in the leg.
- 2:12:11Here's the windup. One and two pitch. Ball two outside. He's started to go forward but held back in time to take ball three.
- 2:12:27Runner on third with one out. Glenn doubles off Mueller's glove and right moved up as Mitchell grounded out.
- 2:12:36The pitch is low into the dirt for ball three. And the string is out. Full count of three and two on Al Smith.
- 2:12:51The Indians bouncing back against the fine pitching of Ruben Gomez, who has given up only four hits.
- 2:13:00Glenn is on third with one out. The count three and two. Here's the payoff pitch. Swung on and fouled off. Down the first baseline, curving back into the crowd. Out of play.
- 2:13:09Whitey Lockman raised over with no chance to get it.
- 2:13:26New ball is tossed into play.
- 2:13:33Gomez is all set. Here's the windup. The three-two pitch. Hit foul down the third baseline and Glenn had to jump out of the way of that ball.
- 2:13:44Dusty Rhodes racing over, taking no chances on whether it was foul. How fair. Feel of that ball right where the boys are warming up. McCall and Wilhelm.
- 2:14:00Smith to bat it with a count three and two. Glenn on third. Yacht field around toward left. Time is called. Smith steps out of the batter's box.
- 2:14:20All right, the three-two pitchers were on the ground ball to the shortstop. Doc is up with it. Glenn is coming on to score. The throw high at the first base. And yellow Smith is second. He races around second.
- 2:14:30Lockman is up with the ball to throw across the diamond. Smith holds up and goes back to second.
- 2:14:41The score is now New York six, Cleveland two, and Smith is on second. That could well be a break for the Indians.
- 2:14:51We'll get the official call on it. It is a base hit and an arrow. A hit to deep shortstop. And an arrow.
- 2:15:06The batter is Bobby Avila. The score is six to two. The run got it in for Al Smith. Glenn scored. Smith is now in second.
- 2:15:18The first pitch to Avila. Ball one high and inside. Smith goes to second on the throwing arrow by Alvin Doc.
- 2:15:31That's the first giant error of the game and the third for both teams. The Indians have two. One out here in the last half of the eighth inning. Smith on second. Takes the lead.
- 2:15:43The next pitch. Avila takes ball two inside and low.
- 2:15:54The Giants now have a total of four errors for the three games of the 54 World Series. The Indians two. Next pitch. Avila takes ball three high and inside.
- 2:16:08Ball three, no strikes. Batter on deck is Larry Dolby. The score is New York six, Cleveland two.
- 2:16:25The outfield playing straight away. Gomez okays the sign. The pitch is a strike. The outside corner, waste time.
- 2:16:41Three and one to count. Avila may not let this one go by. Naturally he'd like to get on if possible. Dolby coming up. There's ball four, too high and Avila takes the wall.
- 2:16:55Coming up is Larry Dolby. And here comes Leo DeRoscia out of the giant dugout.
- 2:17:05We'll have a little conference out there on the mound. Indians have runners on first and second with one out.
- 2:17:11You know fans, this is only the third World Series for Cleveland, yet its players have achieved the greatest single batting and fielding feats possible.
- 2:17:20In 1920, Elmer Smith slammed a homer with the bases loaded. Bill Womgantz made a triple play unassisted.
- 2:17:27Now this is the kind of valuable baseball information that's packed into the 112 pages of the Gillette World Series record book. Be sure to get yours.
- 2:17:42Now umpire Jaco Conlon goes out and it looks like a new pitcher is going to be called into the game.
- 2:17:51Mark Wilhelm. DeRoscia making with the knuckler sign, his right hand.
- 2:18:00And that is going to be all for Ruben Gomez.
- 2:18:16Mark Wilhelm, a knuckleball pitcher, is coming into the game to face Larry Dolby.
- 2:18:27So Gomez, running into a bit of trouble here in the last half of the eighth inning, has worked seven and one third innings.
- 2:18:37He has given up five hits. He has walked three men. He has struck out two.
- 2:18:48And has allowed two runs and is leaving two men on. Should they score, they will be charged against him.
- 2:19:00And now we have a change in our scoring. We've just had word from the official scorers that Al Smith does not get a base hit.
- 2:19:09However, he does get a run batted in. There's a two base throwing error charged to Alvin Dock.
- 2:19:16So Gomez has given up only four hits.
- 2:19:22Got that, and you're scoring seven and a third innings. Given up four hits, walked three, struck out two. Gave up two runs and is leaving two men on.
- 2:19:35Wilhelm, wearing number 49, taking his warm-up throws. He is different from most knuckleball pitchers.
- 2:19:43And that he throws a fast knuckle. It's a knuckleball, but it's very fast.
- 2:19:52Still works the same, and is just as hard, if not harder, to hit.
- 2:19:59Larry Dolby, who was the hitting star of the 1948 World Series against the Boston Braves, now has a chance to come through for his ball club.
- 2:20:12All right, Wilhelm says he's ready to work. Dolby steps in. Smith is on second. Bobby Avila is on first.
- 2:20:21Vic Wirtz is on deck. Indians trailing by four runs.
- 2:20:33Marv Grissom now joins Wendy McCall, the left-hander warming up in the bullpen. Grissom is the right-hander that helped in the first game, actually won it.
- 2:20:43All right, Wilhelm is ready. Here's the stretch. The pitch to Dolby, he swings and misses. Strike one.
- 2:20:49Boy, and there was no question about what he wanted. He was swinging for the distance.
- 2:21:00There's the owl. He was swinging for defense.
- 2:21:06The runners move off. The next pitch, swung around the ground ball is into the first base when Lachman takes it, races to the bag ahead of Dolby, and Dolby is out on a close play.
- 2:21:15The runners move up. Dolby tried a slide into first base, but Lachman beat him there.
- 2:21:26The bullpen is out, and the batter is Vic Wirtz.
- 2:21:35A Giants lead by a score of 6-2.
- 2:21:39Now time is called. Westrom goes out to talk with Wilhelm.
- 2:21:49Wilhelm is in the picture, proving that he can reach into the bag and come up with some fine relief pitching.
- 2:22:02Marv Grissom got credit for winning the first game of the World Series.
- 2:22:06Yesterday was Johnny Antonelli all the way.
- 2:22:09First pitch to Wirtz now, his ball went outside.
- 2:22:12He'll try to keep it away from his power. Batter on deck is a right-hand batter, Hank Majeski.
- 2:22:21Smith is on third, Avila on second. The Giants lead 6-2. They're two out.
- 2:22:26Here's the windup. The next pitch is a strike hitting the outside corner waist-tie.
- 2:22:31Ball one and strike one.
- 2:22:37Wirtz has certainly been the hitting star of the series for the Indians thus far, just as Rhodes has been for the Giants.
- 2:22:44Next pitch fouled back to the screen, and now the pitcher has him in the hole.
- 2:22:50Ball one and strike two.
- 2:22:57One and two count.
- 2:23:00Wilhelm didn't like the ball that he got there, tossed it back into the catcher.
- 2:23:05Another little left-hander, the umpire back of the plate, Jaco Conlon, throws another out.
- 2:23:15Into the windup, the one and two pitch. Wirtz swings and he misses. He struck him out.
- 2:23:20Wirtz goes down swinging, and Mr. Wilhelm did a mighty fine job, a right-hand pitcher against two left-hand batters.
- 2:23:32The Indians in the eighth inning get just the one run on one hit.
- 2:23:37There was one giant error, and two men were left on the bases.
- 2:23:42At the end of eight innings, the score is New York 6, Cleveland 2.
- 2:23:48Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp and listen, mister, how are your picks for blades? Do you have plenty? How are your picks for blades? You better check. Please make sure you have enough, cause a worn-out blade makes shaving mighty tough.
- 2:24:06How are your picks for blades? Better look to let the blades we need.
- 2:24:16And our fans, we're back at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, going into the first half of the ninth inning of the third World Series game between the New York Giants and the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:24:26The new triad pitcher is number 12, Don Mossy.
- 2:24:34Mossy is making his second appearance in the World Series, appeared in 40 ball games during the regular season.
- 2:24:43And young Hal Narragun is the Indian catcher.
- 2:24:51Number 18, Hal Narragun, he has just returned from the Marines this year and was carried by the ball club as that extra serviceman.
- 2:25:07He hails from Bobbitton, Ohio.
- 2:25:14He appeared in 45 ball games, posted a batting average of 238.
- 2:25:21And now in the first half of the ninth, it'll be Don Mueller leading off for the Giants, left-hand batter number 22 against left-hand pitcher Don Mossy.
- 2:25:30Mueller has one out of four and has scored two runs, swings on the first pitch and wraps the line drive out of the third baseman's head into left field.
- 2:25:37A base hit, Smith is up with it, the throw to the infield, holds it to a single.
- 2:25:42Mueller lined the first pitch into left.
- 2:25:46His hit into left field in the third inning was a beautiful thing to see.
- 2:25:51With the hit and run on, dark was moving, Mueller hit one through the hole into left field.
- 2:25:58Now here's Willie Mays, he has two out of four, two singles both into right field.
- 2:26:04He's a right-hand batter, nobody out.
- 2:26:08First pitch is a strike, a fastball, let her hide.
- 2:26:22Runner on first, Don Mueller leads away, nobody out.
- 2:26:26The next pitch is high and outside with a curve that refused, ball one and strike one.
- 2:26:31Mays today coming up with his first World Series hits, has two of them now.
- 2:26:39The Giants have a total of nine, has against four for the Indians.
- 2:26:45One and one to count, here's the stretch.
- 2:26:49The pitch is swung on and fouled back into the stands, out of play.
- 2:26:59Count moves to ball one and strike two on the batter, Willie Mays, number 24.
- 2:27:04On deck is Hank Thompson.
- 2:27:16And Marcy O'Kee's the sign from his young battery mate, Al Narragun, checks the runner.
- 2:27:22The one and two pitch is high, ball two, ball two and strike two.
- 2:27:31Mays has made his hits pay off today, two hits, two runs batted in.
- 2:27:39Mueller takes the lead off, ready to travel.
- 2:27:41The two-two pitch and it is ball three, a bit too high.
- 2:27:46Ball three, strike two.
- 2:27:52Mays almost went through with the swing, but held back just in time, did not break the wrist.
- 2:28:06Ball three, strike two, and now Mueller will be moving.
- 2:28:09The stretch and the pay off pitch is swung on, there's a line drive, hits sharply into left center.
- 2:28:13Mueller makes the turn at second, he's going for third.
- 2:28:15He'll be in there standing up, don't be throwing to second.
- 2:28:18Mays holding it first.
- 2:28:20Three hits for Mays and he has come through each time with men on base.
- 2:28:25That's the kind of a hitter you like.
- 2:28:28The guy that can deliver, and there are runners on the sacks.
- 2:28:36Giant runners on first and third, nobody out.
- 2:28:38The winner is Henry Thompson, third baseman.
- 2:28:42He has two walks and a double.
- 2:28:53Getting more action down in the Indian bullpen now as Bob Hooper starts to warm up, right hander.
- 2:29:00First pitch to Thompson, he hits a line drive to Strickland.
- 2:29:02Strickland's throw back to first and Mays has doubled.
- 2:29:05Mays was halfway to second and had not the slightest chance of getting back.
- 2:29:10And with one pitch, Marcy erases two men.
- 2:29:13Mueller is holding at third.
- 2:29:17That's the first double play for the Indians and just the second of the World Series.
- 2:29:26Thompson lined to Strickland who doubled Mays at first.
- 2:29:30Here's Dusty Rhodes up.
- 2:29:35Two out, runner on third.
- 2:29:37Mays was struck out by Norlesky in the seventh inning.
- 2:29:40First pitch to him, he swings and hits a ground ball foul down the first baseline.
- 2:29:44Lot of play in the counter, strike one.
- 2:29:50Seven runs batted in in this World Series and this is just the third game.
- 2:30:00The Giants are leading by a score of 6-2.
- 2:30:03And unless the Indians can pull their forces together, it looks like an abbreviated one.
- 2:30:09Next pitch is ball one high and inside, one and one to count.
- 2:30:18Neither manager has named a starting pitcher for tomorrow's fourth game.
- 2:30:28Here's the windup.
- 2:30:30The pitch is too low for ball two, two and one to count.
- 2:30:39Mueller on third, he let off of the single, moved to third on Mays' hit into left center.
- 2:30:45Thompson lined into a double play.
- 2:30:50The outfield playing straight away.
- 2:30:54The next pitch to Rhodes is ball three, inside and low, three and one to count.
- 2:31:04Ball three, strike one.
- 2:31:07Rhodes came on in the third inning as a pinch hitter for Monte Irvin, singled into right field, driving in two runs.
- 2:31:18Green run the county, maybe gunning for it, here's the windup.
- 2:31:21And the pitch is a strike call, a little high.
- 2:31:25Full count of three and two on the batter.
- 2:31:31Fans start buzzing a little bit as Marcy gets ready for the big pitch.
- 2:31:36The count three and two.
- 2:31:38With two out in the first half of the ninth inning, the Giants lead by a score of six to two.
- 2:31:44Marcy in action.
- 2:31:46The three-two pitch, a swing and a miss.
- 2:31:48He struck him out.
- 2:31:50In the high curve ball and Rhodes went for it, struck him out.
- 2:31:54Second time.
- 2:31:56And two rookies turn the trick.
- 2:32:00So in the eighth inning for the Giants, no runs, they had two hits, one man left.
- 2:32:05And going into the last half of the ninth inning, the scorer is New York 6, Cleveland 2.
- 2:32:11You know, fans, unless you're an expert, you may have missed a few points of today's game.
- 2:32:18So stay tuned after the last out and hear old man baseball himself, Bill Cobb,
- 2:32:23who reviews the game and points up the day's play as only he can.
- 2:32:37Well, it's the last half of the ninth inning, and the Indians have just three outs to get back into this game
- 2:32:45and to get into the World Series.
- 2:32:47They have yet to post a victory.
- 2:32:49The Giants holding the lead two games to none and leading this game by four runs, six to two.
- 2:33:05The Giants have collected 10 hits off Indian pitching, five of them coming off Scott of Garcia,
- 2:33:11two off Art Hodderman, who relieved in the fourth.
- 2:33:14Naleski gave up one hit, and Marcy gave up two, however the Giants failed to score against Marcy
- 2:33:19in the one inning that he worked.
- 2:33:27Hank Majeski will lead off for the Indians.
- 2:33:32Bottom half of the batting order is up.
- 2:33:35Hort Wilhelm, the knuckleball hurler, pitches a strike.
- 2:33:41Worst pitch was right in their waist high.
- 2:33:44Majeski is looking for his first hit today, his 0 for 3.
- 2:33:47Down it out twice and fouled out.
- 2:33:51Wilhelm pitches a strike to the inside corner, and there's that knuckleball.
- 2:33:55Boy, that's a tough one.
- 2:34:01Indian batters have really been silent.
- 2:34:04Ruben Gomez giving up only four hits.
- 2:34:07Wilhelm coming on in the eighth inning to put out the far.
- 2:34:10Getting Doeby and Worst, two left-hand batters.
- 2:34:13There's ball one inside, and low to Majeski.
- 2:34:15The count moves to ball one and strike two.
- 2:34:25The outfield around Todd Left, Wilhelm takes his time with Kechua Weston.
- 2:34:30One and two pitch.
- 2:34:32Ball two outside, and low with a curveball.
- 2:34:35Ball two and strike two.
- 2:34:3971,555 fans in today's ballgame, bringing the total to 183,405
- 2:34:49for the three games of the 1954 series.
- 2:34:53All right, the two-two pitch.
- 2:34:55Majeski takes strike three to the inside corner.
- 2:34:57He's struck him out.
- 2:35:02Went away.
- 2:35:03Well, the Indians have used four pitchers today.
- 2:35:06They can sure use a pair like Dizzy and Paul Dean, right?
- 2:35:09Remember, they pitched and won all four games of the 34 World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 2:35:14Information like this gives you more baseball pleasure,
- 2:35:17and the deluxe World Series record book is filled with it.
- 2:35:23One out.
- 2:35:24Dave Filiers up.
- 2:35:25Flames on the first pitch.
- 2:35:26It's a ground ball to the second base.
- 2:35:27A knockdown by Williams.
- 2:35:28The third of first, and Filiers out on the close play.
- 2:35:39There's that hustle in that giant infield, and it'll pay off every time.
- 2:35:44When the dice used to say, stop them with your chest, your knee, your elbow, or anything,
- 2:35:48but go and get them and throw that batter out.
- 2:35:52Filiers outing out, second to first, four-three.
- 2:35:57They're two gone, and we're getting a pinch hitter.
- 2:36:02Dave Pope batting for George Strickland.
- 2:36:14Up and two down for the Indians here in the ninth, the Giants lead by a serve, six to two.
- 2:36:30Pope is the left-hand batter.
- 2:36:34First pitch, he swings on it.
- 2:36:35A ground ball to the right side of the infield.
- 2:36:36Williams covers up a pass up at the, but go to first, and on a pretty play.
- 2:36:40Filiers out, Pope grounding out, Williams to first, and the Indians bite the dust.
- 2:36:45One, two, three.
- 2:36:47No runs, no hits, nothing is crossed.
- 2:36:51And the final score, New York, six runs, ten hits, one error.
- 2:36:56Even two runs, four hits, and two errors.
- 2:36:59The winning pitcher, Ruben Gomez.
- 2:37:02The losing pitcher, Mike Garcia.
- 2:37:04Now in just a moment, Bill Corum will review the highlights of today's game for you.

- 2:37:57That's yours today.
- 2:38:00It's the New New Tony, a South Timing Tony.
- 2:38:03It's South Timing, South Timing, South Timing, South Timing Tony.
- 2:38:08Well, these players stop the questions and lead all news, I guess,
- 2:38:15of this third World Series game here in beautiful municipal stadium in Cleveland
- 2:38:20before this great crowd this afternoon was that the Indians finally got Bessie Rhodes up.
- 2:38:26In fact, they got him out twice, Ray Norlesky finding and then Don Morse.
- 2:38:31Last time he was advanced in the ninth inning, the last out the Giants.
- 2:38:37Before that happened, the dusty one had driven in two more runs
- 2:38:41to bring his total up to that point up to seven,
- 2:38:44and the record for four games is only nine held by Lou Gehrig.
- 2:38:48So he was still in there swinging when he went up to pick it, and in this season
- 2:38:53and in this series as a pink hitter he's gone 18-448, and that is some pink hitting.
- 2:39:00And Ruben Ruben, I've been thinking that Gomez was quite a picture out there this afternoon.
- 2:39:05I don't know for sure that when the Indians put on their little serve there in the eighth inning,
- 2:39:10De Roche would have had to take him out, but of course he's got such a tremendous bullpen,
- 2:39:15and that one fellow particularly with the way to go ball that finished up,
- 2:39:19nobody gets him when he's like that much. Tony Cucinelli was over in Brooklyn
- 2:39:24sitting with Tom Kean scouting the Giants, one of those teams over in Brooklyn,
- 2:39:28and Hart came in, Wilhelm, and Presto Thompson, some of them sitting there,
- 2:39:32and they were watching this ball, and if you ever notice it and see Weston try to catch it,
- 2:39:37you have to jump at it, I think. That knuckleball just goes everywhere and anywhere.
- 2:39:41So Thompson said to Cucinelli, said, Tony, maybe you better not knock that starting picture out.
- 2:39:47That's the way Wilhelm finished up here this afternoon for Gomez.
- 2:39:51It was a laughing game for the Giants, you might say, and right now it would look very much
- 2:39:56as if they have the Indians well on the run, even here in their home to feed.
- 2:40:01You know, in mid-rump, they didn't look very good. Their pitching wasn't too strong.
- 2:40:05Mike Garcia, the big bear, just didn't have it this afternoon, and after Roche came in
- 2:40:10and he's daily act, replacing Irving at the bat and made his big pinch hit, driving in the two runs.
- 2:40:16Well, that was pretty much the ball game. Of course, Dick West finally found out how to get a ball
- 2:40:21over Willie May's head. He hit it over the fence for a tremendous home run.
- 2:40:25The ball was really tattooed, and that's one way the Indians can keep from leaving men on bases.
- 2:40:31As things stand now, they've left more men on bases in this series than some armies have told us.
- 2:40:38They have loaded them up and two on and one on right through the series,
- 2:40:42but it seems almost impossible for them to get the big hit when they need it.
- 2:40:47And they needed it badly this afternoon because the Giants had their hitting close on.
- 2:40:51Right down the line, they were whacking that ball solidly.
- 2:40:54Little Willie Mays came up with three rousing hits, good, clean hits, and Darks and all the gang,
- 2:41:01Mueller, the whole bunch, were hitting that ball very well, Whitey Loughlin and West West from driving in the run.
- 2:41:08And it was a team victory for the Giants with a very fine-picking job by Gomez.
- 2:41:13And of course, now tomorrow, DeLotra can do put near anything.
- 2:41:16He's got some other pretty good pitchers in there, and he could use them two or three at a time
- 2:41:20or anything he wants to now. I don't know when an American League team,
- 2:41:25I mean, a National League team ever won four straight from an American League team in the World Series.
- 2:41:29I would have to go back to 1914, the Athletics and Braves, so it probably has happened since,
- 2:41:34but it's been a long time. Now this broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights
