- 0:00Speaker 1: A condemned prisoner asks Philip Marlowe to recover stolen jewels
- 0:04Speaker 1: before the execution date arrives. That request carries Marlowe from
- 0:08Speaker 1: a state penitentiary to the Los Angeles waterfront, where former associates,
- 0:13Speaker 1: a warehouse lead, and San Pedro docks become part of
- 0:17Speaker 1: the search. Gerald Moore stars as Raymond Chandler's private detective
- 0:22Speaker 1: in CBS's The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, episode 101, The
- 0:27Speaker 1: Final Payment, first broadcast September 15th, 1950. The script is
- 0:34Speaker 1: credited to Gene Levitt and Robert Mitchell, with Norman MacDonald directing.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And now, the original broadcast.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Get this and get it straight. Crime is a sucker's road.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Those who travel it wind up in the gutter of
- 0:48Speaker 2: the prison of the grave. There's no other end. But
- 0:51Speaker 2: they never learn.
- 0:51Speaker 3: From the pen of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime fiction,
- 0:57Speaker 3: comes his most famous character in The Adventures of Philip Marlowe. Now,
- 1:11Speaker 3: with Gerald Moore, starred as Philip Marlowe, we bring you
- 1:14Speaker 3: tonight's exciting story, The Final Payment.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Uh, yes, sir. I'm Philip Marlowe. Warden Riker said he'd
- 1:54Speaker 2: see me at noon. Oh, yes, Mr. Marlowe.
- 1:56Speaker 4: The warden will be with you in just a minute.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Excuse me, sir.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Warden's office, Sergeant Kennedy speaking.
- 2:02Speaker 6: Who?
- 2:03Speaker 2: Oh, the L.A.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Tribune.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Venera's execution? Okay, hold on. I got the dope here
- 2:10Speaker 5: on my desk someplace. Excuse me, Mr.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Marlowe.
- 2:13Speaker 5: It'll be just a minute.
- 2:14Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Press gets hungry for the gory details about now. This
- 2:17Speaker 5: is third call this morning. Have a seat there.
- 2:20Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, here it is.
- 2:23Speaker 7: Office of the Warden, State Penitentiary, 10 a.m., September 8, 1950.
- 2:28Speaker 5: Subject, press release, paragraph one.
- 2:31Speaker 7: William Arthur Sinero, 24, tried and convicted of the robbery-murder
- 2:35Speaker 7: of Emile Negrotto, Bakers Beach, California, last August 5, is
- 2:40Speaker 7: scheduled to be executed in a manner prescribed by law
- 2:43Speaker 7: at 11 o'clock post-meridian this date.
- 2:46Speaker 5: At this time, no stay of execution is anticipated. Signed,
- 2:50Speaker 5: Stanley M. Riker Warden.
- 2:52Speaker 2: That's it. Huh?
- 2:56Speaker 5: No, you can't talk to the warden. That's why we
- 2:58Speaker 5: go through all this press release junk. Yeah, well, we
- 3:02Speaker 5: got our problems, too, you know.
- 3:04Speaker 6: Goodbye.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Sorry, Mr. Marlowe.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Now, uh, your appointment with the warden, what was it
- 3:10Speaker 5: about again?
- 3:11Speaker 2: William Arthur Sinero, 24. I'm a friend of his. Oh.
- 3:16Speaker 6: Oh, yes, yes, of course.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I forgot to, uh, Well, I hope I haven't offended Mr. Marlowe.
- 3:22Speaker 2: That is.
- 3:24Speaker 6: I'll tell the warden you're here, sir.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I knew I didn't have too much right to be
- 3:30Speaker 2: mad at one Sergeant Kennedy. But today it didn't matter.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Because I was mad at the whole world, and in
- 3:36Speaker 2: particular what it had done to her. It used to
- 3:38Speaker 2: be a nice kid named Billy Sinero. And when I
- 3:42Speaker 2: stood in Warden Riker's far-from-drab prison office and waited while
- 3:45Speaker 2: a dapper man in gleaming hickok cufflinks and soft gray
- 3:47Speaker 2: gabardine got through talking to his wife... In syrups, sticky tones.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Began to get mad at him, too. That drained out
- 3:56Speaker 2: of me fast because when he hung up, he scraped
- 3:58Speaker 2: the goo off his voice quickly. Shook hands like he
- 4:01Speaker 2: meant it and told Kennedy we weren't to be disturbed.
- 4:03Speaker 2: When he spoke of scenario, a lot of sympathy crawled
- 4:06Speaker 2: in between the words. Even when he came to the point.
- 4:09Speaker 4: It's the breach of regulations for a condemned man to
- 4:12Speaker 4: have any visitor other than the prison chaplain on the
- 4:14Speaker 4: day of his execution, Mr. Marlowe.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So first of all, just how well do you know Snero? Well,
- 4:19Speaker 2: he sold papers on the corner near my office as
- 4:21Speaker 2: a kid. We swapped gags twice a day.
- 4:24Speaker 4: And when his father died and he quit selling papers?
- 4:26Speaker 2: I never saw him again until a year ago when
- 4:28Speaker 2: he got over-involved with some tin horn gamblers. I managed
- 4:32Speaker 2: to set him free.
- 4:33Speaker 4: As a private detective?
- 4:34Speaker 2: As a big brother. Went to work at a San
- 4:37Speaker 2: Pedro boatyard after that. I haven't seen him since.
- 4:39Speaker 4: And then you have no idea why he's asked to
- 4:40Speaker 4: talk to you today?
- 4:41Speaker 2: No, I don't. Do you, Warden? Mr.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Marlowe, do you recall the details in this case?
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, more or less. Let's see, an old man named
- 4:50Speaker 2: Emil Negrado and his wife were robbed of 100,000 bucks
- 4:53Speaker 2: worth of uninsured jewels at their summer place at... Bakersby. Yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 2: that's it, yeah. And Emil Negrado was killed when he
- 5:00Speaker 2: tried to interfere. Sonero was tied back to it by
- 5:03Speaker 2: a single fingerprint and later identified by Mrs. Negrado. I
- 5:07Speaker 2: believe she thought there were two more, huh?
- 5:08Speaker 4: Yes, but Sonero denied this. Also, Mr. Marlowe, you may
- 5:11Speaker 4: recall that the jewels were never recovered.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Cenaro said they were lost at sea when the boat
- 5:16Speaker 4: he fled in hit rough water on the way back
- 5:18Speaker 4: to San Pedro. Now, Mr.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Marlowe, do I.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Begin to answer the question I just ignored? The jewels,
- 5:24Speaker 4: I mean? Cenaro may want to tell you that they
- 5:27Speaker 4: weren't lost after all. He may want to tell you
- 5:30Speaker 4: where they are. He may want you to do something
- 5:33Speaker 4: about them.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Sort of last will and testament, is that it? From
- 5:36Speaker 2: his point of view, yes. And from mine?
- 5:38Speaker 4: A very lucrative offer. Perhaps 50%, Mr.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Marlowe. Why not 100%, Mr.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Warden?
- 5:43Speaker 2: Don't be a piker. I could always cross him up,
- 5:45Speaker 2: you know. Anything else? Or were you just letting me
- 5:50Speaker 2: know why the state is allowing this visit? I was
- 5:53Speaker 2: just letting you know what the state knows, Mr. Marlowe. Uh-huh.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I know a little more.
- 5:57Speaker 4: I know that Billy Sinero is through as a criminal.
- 6:02Speaker 2: In his heart.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Not just because he's behind bars with worse to come.
- 6:07Speaker 4: He's ready to die, Mr.
- 6:08Speaker 8: Marlowe.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Almost anxious.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Well, then why the session? Why all the statistics? Why
- 6:13Speaker 2: the invitation for me to play informer?
- 6:14Speaker 4: For two reasons.
- 6:16Speaker 2: First, I may be wrong about the boy completely. Thus,
- 6:19Speaker 2: his repentance is a fake. Which you don't believe. No.
- 6:22Speaker 2: What's the other reason? Look, Marlowe, if anything goes wrong,
- 6:27Speaker 2: you came in here as an informer. That's official. And unofficially,
- 6:32Speaker 2: I want to.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Give the boy a break. Zanaro asked to get you
- 6:36Speaker 4: because he wanted to talk to the only person in
- 6:38Speaker 4: the world he thought he could trust. And right now,
- 6:41Speaker 4: I think he has every right to just such a talk,
- 6:43Speaker 4: whatever it's about. I only wanted to be sure he
- 6:47Speaker 4: talked to the correct party, that's all. Sergeant Kennedy will
- 6:50Speaker 4: show you the way, Mr. Marlowe, to Zanaro's cell.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I was a bit confused. Riker seemed anxious to help
- 7:02Speaker 2: Sonero over some rough hours, and yet at the same
- 7:04Speaker 2: time he was shrewd. In no time he'd work me
- 7:08Speaker 2: around to where I'd be the fastest, most courteous informer
- 7:11Speaker 2: on record if Sonero was a fake. I thought. But
- 7:14Speaker 2: I thought otherwise when I was alone with Sonero. I
- 7:17Speaker 2: knew that the Negrotto jewels did still exist.
- 7:20Speaker 6: Mr. Marlowe, why are you looking at me that way?
- 7:23Speaker 6: To understand what I'm asking, don't you see?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Now, wait a minute. Take it easy, Billy. A step
- 7:26Speaker 2: at a time. Now, you say that the jewels never
- 7:28Speaker 2: went overboard.
- 7:29Speaker 6: No, I never even saw them. That was a cotton
- 7:30Speaker 6: bowl store.
- 7:31Speaker 2: And yet you want me to get them to get
- 7:33Speaker 2: the jewels and return them to Mrs. Emil Negrado. Is
- 7:35Speaker 2: that right?
- 7:35Speaker 6: Right.
- 7:37Speaker 9: And this is Negrado, the woman who identified me.
- 7:40Speaker 6: The widow of the man I killed. Look, Mr. Marlowe,
- 7:43Speaker 6: sit down here on the cot and listen.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Okay. Where's the beginning, Billy?
- 7:48Speaker 6: Last August 5th.
- 7:49Speaker 9: It was me and the other two, a big red-headed
- 7:50Speaker 9: louse named Jessie Tapp and a girl named Gloria.
- 7:53Speaker 6: Gloria Konkowski, a blonde with a little scar on the
- 7:55Speaker 6: bridge of her nose.
- 7:56Speaker 9: Jessie's girl, strictly flashy. We took my boat. It's a
- 7:59Speaker 9: fishing smack, the Lovelady. We sailed from San Pedro over
- 8:04Speaker 9: to Baker's Beach. I was the one who shot him, Mr.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Mono. And the jewels?
- 8:09Speaker 6: They were in the leather bag. Jessie had them.
- 8:12Speaker 9: But after the shot, we split up fast and ran.
- 8:15Speaker 9: I hid until the next morning, then shoved off in
- 8:17Speaker 9: the Lovelady... I don't know about the others.
- 8:19Speaker 6: I was picked up that afternoon. The rest you know.
- 8:23Speaker 2: I'm not so sure. At your trial, you swore that.
- 8:26Speaker 6: That I was alone and the jewels went overboard. Well,
- 8:28Speaker 6: at first I thought that I might get off, so
- 8:30Speaker 6: I had to clam up. But then I... Then everything changed.
- 8:34Speaker 2: The verdict, huh?
- 8:36Speaker 6: No. An old woman whose husband I killed.
- 8:41Speaker 2: See what you mean. But you still didn't tell the
- 8:44Speaker 2: authorities who the others were.
- 8:45Speaker 6: No, and I won't today.
- 8:47Speaker 9: Both Jesse Tapp and that blonde can smell a cop
- 8:48Speaker 9: a mile away. They'd only run and take the jewels
- 8:51Speaker 9: with them. The law would louse it up.
- 8:54Speaker 6: I want the jewels back to.
- 8:55Speaker 3: The little old lady.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I always liked you, Billy.
- 9:00Speaker 6: I know how you work, Mr.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Marlowe.
- 9:02Speaker 6: I've got enough for you to start on. It only
- 9:05Speaker 6: came yesterday.
- 9:06Speaker 9: That's why this last-minute rush, you might say.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Mr.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Marlowe, I know where Jesse Tapp is. That also means
- 9:12Speaker 6: Glory isn't far away.
- 9:13Speaker 2: From where?
- 9:14Speaker 6: San Pedro, down near the dock.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Now, look.
- 9:17Speaker 9: There's a tough old guy who runs a dry dock
- 9:19Speaker 9: and repair lash up for small boats, name of Jomo.
- 9:22Speaker 9: I worked for him a year ago. I also left
- 9:24Speaker 9: him the love lady. He spotted Tap, had his eyes
- 9:27Speaker 9: open for months for me, no questions asked. He was
- 9:29Speaker 9: here to see me yesterday. He's out to find where
- 9:31Speaker 9: Tap hangs out now.
- 9:32Speaker 6: He's the one you see.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but wait a minute. What makes you think Jesse
- 9:35Speaker 2: Tap still has the jewel?
- 9:36Speaker 9: Because I saw him take him and run, and he's
- 9:37Speaker 9: still hanging around San Pedro. Maybe he hit him where
- 9:40Speaker 9: he can't get to, or maybe he doesn't want to
- 9:41Speaker 9: get to him until he's contacted the right fence.
- 9:43Speaker 6: Anyway, Mr. Mallow, the chance I'd like you to take
- 9:46Speaker 6: for me.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Of course, I....
- 9:51Speaker 6: I can't talk about your fee.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Look, kid, don't you think we ought to talk... Mr.
- 9:54Speaker 6: Marlowe, I've done nothing but think.
- 9:56Speaker 9: This is the only way it can possibly work.
- 10:00Speaker 6: The only way it can help me and... Mrs.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Negretto both. Well?
- 10:07Speaker 6: Will you try it? Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I guess so, Billy.
- 10:12Speaker 6: One last thing, Mr. Marlowe. If you make it by.
- 10:17Speaker 9: Before 11 tonight, Get the word to me, will you?
- 10:23Speaker 9: And if you don't make it, or it looks like
- 10:24Speaker 9: you're not going to, don't lie.
- 10:29Speaker 6: Okay?
- 10:31Speaker 2: Okay. Time's up, Mr. Marlowe. Sorry, scenario. It's all right, Kennedy.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Don't mention it. So long, Mr. Marlowe.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Goodbye, Billy. It took five minutes for me to walk
- 10:53Speaker 2: back to the warden's office and five more to lie
- 10:55Speaker 2: to him about what scenario it wanted of me. And
- 10:58Speaker 2: another ten to get outside and head toward my parked car.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I was thinking about what the condemned man had told
- 11:04Speaker 2: me when I suddenly realized I was in the middle
- 11:05Speaker 2: of a busy street and right smack in the path
- 11:08Speaker 2: of a speeding car. What's the matter with you?
- 11:11Speaker 10: What is that?
- 11:12Speaker 5: Hey, mister.
- 11:14Speaker 6: Mister, you all right?
- 11:15Speaker 5: Holy... You okay?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm okay. I'm okay. Much obliged. I'll try
- 11:19Speaker 2: to remember to look where I'm going next time.
- 11:20Speaker 6: Yeah, these jerks figure every street's an Indianapolis speedway.
- 11:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Hey, another thing.
- 11:26Speaker 5: That geezer didn't stop either.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I know.
- 11:28Speaker 8: But if you're interested, I got a squint at him before.
- 11:30Speaker 8: I was in that corner drugstore after a Coke, and
- 11:33Speaker 8: while I was waiting, I happened to see this guy
- 11:35Speaker 8: stand outside his car.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Then all of a sudden, he got in and took off.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Wait a minute, wait a minute. You mean he got
- 11:39Speaker 2: all that speed up just from the end of the street?
- 11:42Speaker 2: Tell me, friend, what did he look like?
- 11:43Speaker 6: He was tiny.
- 11:45Speaker 8: Tiny like your pinky finger. And elevating shoes on. Plus
- 11:49Speaker 8: the fact he needed a shave.
- 11:51Speaker 6: Say, you don't think it was purposeful, do you? Not
- 11:55Speaker 6: an accident, I mean.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I don't know. But either way, I'm much obliged to you, friend. Bye-bye.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I made a mental note about the small man with
- 12:06Speaker 2: big heels and a beard and let it go at
- 12:08Speaker 2: that time. And I took one last look at the prison.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Made me want to drive the 300 miles to San
- 12:13Speaker 2: Pedro fast. It was some hazy place between late twilight
- 12:23Speaker 2: and early evening fog when I located Jomo and his
- 12:25Speaker 2: water's edge dry dock in a repair shop and told
- 12:27Speaker 2: him who I was.
- 12:30Speaker 6: I was fond of that scenario all my life. I'm
- 12:33Speaker 6: glad I can help him some way.
- 12:35Speaker 4: That boat here was his, you know.
- 12:36Speaker 2: The love lady.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Putting her back in the water tonight.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Eh, love lady. That might be what he needed to
- 12:44Speaker 2: keep him out of trouble, isn't it? Hard to say, Jomo.
- 12:47Speaker 2: But look, I don't have much time. Do you know
- 12:48Speaker 2: where I can get next to this Jesse Tapper?
- 12:52Speaker 11: I followed him just this morning from a bar on
- 12:54Speaker 11: Third Street. He's hiding out in a warehouse on Lookout
- 12:57Speaker 11: Hill Road. It's shut down now. It won't open up
- 13:00Speaker 11: again until.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Hold it, Jomo. That noise that came from out here....
- 13:06Speaker 5: Is someone there, Mr.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Marlowe?
- 13:08Speaker 2: No. No, not anymore, there isn't.
- 13:11Speaker 5: And there probably wasn't.
- 13:12Speaker 6: I got me a clumsy little cat, Marlowe.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Always falling over. Jomo, you said Lookout Hill Road, right? Aye.
- 13:18Speaker 11: Yeah, this is only a block long, the highest point
- 13:21Speaker 11: in town. You just head straight up King Street to
- 13:24Speaker 11: the top. You can't miss the warehouse.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Thanks. Uh, Jomo. You have no idea what this is
- 13:31Speaker 2: all about, huh?
- 13:33Speaker 11: Well, I wouldn't say that, Marlowe. But you see, I
- 13:38Speaker 11: don't let myself think of some things too much. I
- 13:41Speaker 11: keep my mind on boats more than people. Easier to understand.
- 13:46Speaker 11: Easier to repair, too.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Good luck, Marlowe.
- 13:49Speaker 12: Here now is the second act of The Adventures of
- 14:03Speaker 12: Philip Marlowe.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I was less than ten minutes finding the deserted warehouse
- 14:10Speaker 2: which ran through the farm. Rust and every other window broken.
- 14:15Speaker 2: When I was out of my car and moving around
- 14:16Speaker 2: toward a side entrance, I saw something else. It was
- 14:20Speaker 2: a girl, tall and blonde, standing in the deep shadow
- 14:23Speaker 2: of a fit shampoo billboard. When I started for her,
- 14:26Speaker 2: she threw one scared look my way, then scrambled into
- 14:28Speaker 2: her pocket for a key. I made it just as
- 14:31Speaker 2: she got it out and it was a door lock.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Let's not be hasty, honey.
- 14:34Speaker 10: Get your dirty mitts off.
- 14:35Speaker 2: When you stop kicking, I will. Not before, sweetheart. Not before, Gloria.
- 14:42Speaker 10: How do you know the name, Dada?
- 14:43Speaker 2: That cute little scar on the bridge of your nose.
- 14:46Speaker 2: You should have ducked, kid. Not that it doesn't add character.
- 14:49Speaker 10: I'll go soak your head. I don't know you.
- 14:51Speaker 2: You should. Jesse does.
- 14:54Speaker 10: Who are you anyway?
- 14:54Speaker 2: Name's Marlowe. Here to see your boyfriend tap her schedule.
- 14:57Speaker 2: It's a business appointment, Gloria.
- 14:59Speaker 5: Business?
- 15:02Speaker 11: Oh, yes.
- 15:03Speaker 10: Fence, huh?
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, fence, huh? Now do we go up or throw
- 15:07Speaker 2: pebbles at the window until Jesse comes out? Which?
- 15:10Speaker 10: We go up, now that I know who you are.
- 15:12Speaker 10: You know, Jesse didn't mention you coming.
- 15:14Speaker 2: That's what I like about working with Jesse. Which way?
- 15:18Speaker 10: Up these stairs. Kind of nice setup we got here, huh?
- 15:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Sweet of the owners to let you have
- 15:23Speaker 2: a key.
- 15:24Speaker 10: Well, it wasn't exactly that way. Jesse had to.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Change the lock, yeah. Is that the door? One Mark President? Uh-huh.
- 15:31Speaker 10: Mr.
- 15:31Speaker 6: Tapp's very own.
- 15:34Speaker 10: Imagine Jesse as an executive.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Funny. Hey, Mr.
- 15:37Speaker 10: Head of the Firm, you got callers. Jesse! They're just
- 15:42Speaker 10: probably asleep. That's the way I figure, to sleep in
- 15:48Speaker 10: a swivel chair.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Hey, Mr.
- 15:50Speaker 13: President, you got company. Hey, Jesse, come on, wake up.
- 15:55Speaker 13: There's a guy here who wants.
- 16:04Speaker 6: What's wrong?
- 16:04Speaker 2: So much to fix, honey. Head of the firm, Jesse,
- 16:08Speaker 2: has been shot to death. No business as usual today. Dead.
- 16:14Speaker 10: How do you like that?
- 16:16Speaker 2: Not much. Maybe it's you I do business with, huh?
- 16:20Speaker 10: What are you talking about?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Now, look, I never liked to get into money matters
- 16:22Speaker 2: with dames, but now I'm stuck. So let's get to work,
- 16:25Speaker 2: you and me. Where are they, Gloria?
- 16:27Speaker 10: Where are what?
- 16:28Speaker 2: Come on, you coy little jerk. The Stones. Nagrato Stones.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I want to see them.
- 16:31Speaker 10: I don't know where they are. He would never tell me.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Don't lie. You were his girl.
- 16:34Speaker 13: Ever since I met that guy, I've been living on
- 16:37Speaker 13: double-talking slaps in the mouth. I spent my nights dodging
- 16:40Speaker 13: my own shadow.
- 16:41Speaker 10: I'm glad it's over.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Why'd you stick?
- 16:43Speaker 10: Because of them Stones. I knew I had them hid someplace.
- 16:45Speaker 10: Figured maybe they'd get us.
- 16:46Speaker 13: Away from here after all. He kept saying he had
- 16:49Speaker 13: to wait until the time was right.
- 16:50Speaker 10: That's all he'd ever say. Even to me, his girl.
- 16:54Speaker 2: You know, with that talent, you ought to be in pictures, kid.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 16:57Speaker 10: Believe me, mister. I learned the hard way not to
- 16:59Speaker 10: try to pin Jesse's hat down. You do whatever you want.
- 17:02Speaker 10: I'm getting out of here. Before the action.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Just a minute.
- 17:05Speaker 14: What?
- 17:05Speaker 2: Somebody did this, baby.
- 17:07Speaker 10: I can name 20 who've been tickled, kid.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but I took a lot of chances setting up
- 17:10Speaker 2: this deal to move those Negrado jewels. I wouldn't want
- 17:13Speaker 2: to be edged out now by cheap competition like a
- 17:15Speaker 2: squirt and built up heels.
- 17:16Speaker 10: What's that?
- 17:18Speaker 2: Nothing. A swing in the dark. Excuse me.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Oh.
- 17:21Speaker 10: Now you excuse me. He's strictly your problem, sucker.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I stood and watched her as she walked away. I
- 17:31Speaker 2: didn't know just what my next move should be, but
- 17:34Speaker 2: then it hit me. Whoever had killed Jessie Tapp would
- 17:37Speaker 2: go for her next. So when she hailed a cab
- 17:40Speaker 2: at the foot of the hill, I ran to my
- 17:41Speaker 2: car and I started after her. But by the time
- 17:43Speaker 2: I got turned around, a switch engine playing shuffleboard with
- 17:45Speaker 2: a string of boxcars cut in between us. When that
- 17:48Speaker 2: was over, Gloria was gone. I spent the next hour
- 17:56Speaker 2: and a half raking the neon-lighted muck along the docks
- 17:58Speaker 2: looking for her with no success. Until finally in a
- 18:02Speaker 2: rancid backwash called the reef, I got a break, but
- 18:05Speaker 2: from another direction. The same unshaven little man with high
- 18:08Speaker 2: heels who tried earlier to run me down was at
- 18:10Speaker 2: the bar, blinking back the sting of a straight shot.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I watched while I picked up a handful of small
- 18:16Speaker 2: change from the bartender, and when he pranced toward a
- 18:18Speaker 2: phone in the hallway at the rear, I followed him.
- 18:21Speaker 2: It was too good to be a coincidence. Yeah, that's right, Alfredo.
- 18:25Speaker 5: San Diego.
- 18:27Speaker 6: Yeah, Christine Fuller, right.
- 18:29Speaker 2: How much? Okay. Hello?
- 18:40Speaker 5: Hello, Christine?
- 18:42Speaker 4: Hiya, baby.
- 18:44Speaker 5: This is Frank.
- 18:46Speaker 10: Hey, listen, honey, I got it all set up.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm going right now, right away, yeah.
- 18:49Speaker 2: It's dark now and everything's ready.
- 18:52Speaker 14: I said everything, didn't I? I'll have them in an
- 18:55Speaker 14: hour and be out of here. Well, just be a
- 18:59Speaker 14: good girl till I get there, understand?
- 19:02Speaker 10: Yeah, I'll see you before morning.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Oh, your little clits wouldn't let you down, you know that.
- 19:09Speaker 6: Goodbye, baby.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Hello, little Fritz. You come back here!
- 19:14Speaker 6: Hey, what is this?
- 19:14Speaker 10: Who are you?
- 19:15Speaker 2: The guy you tried to run over this afternoon. Hey, now, listen, Slim.
- 19:18Speaker 14: There must be some mistake here.
- 19:19Speaker 2: There is, and you just made it when you knocked
- 19:20Speaker 2: off Jesse Tapp. And now that I got you, little Fritz,
- 19:22Speaker 2: I'm going to shake you up and down until a
- 19:23Speaker 2: lot of answers or a lot of teeth start dropping
- 19:25Speaker 2: out of you. Now, make up your mind.
- 19:27Speaker 5: What's it going to be?
- 19:27Speaker 2: Come on!
- 19:28Speaker 6: No, leave me alone.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Stop. What's going on? Run along, Buster. It's private.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Oh, yeah?
- 19:33Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Try to fake luck like you're picking on a little
- 19:35Speaker 3: guy like him, you'll be shying.
- 19:37Speaker 6: Hey, don't you believe in the brotherhood of man?
- 19:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but this weasel don't qualify in upload.
- 19:40Speaker 6: He told me, fellas, he was going to rob me. Oh,
- 19:42Speaker 6: he was, was he? Put him down here.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Come on, come on. Turn loose, you big bully.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Okay, you jerk. Come on. Joe!
- 19:50Speaker 6: Come on, get up!
- 19:51Speaker 10: Oh, nuts, he's all cold.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Let's throw him out in the alley. Come on. Hey,
- 20:17Speaker 2: where'd the little guy go? Hey, he baited.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Oh, you'd think he'd stick around long enough to buy
- 20:24Speaker 4: us a drink.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Judging from the way my face felt, the two long
- 20:37Speaker 2: showmen must have Oh, I had barnacles on their fists.
- 20:42Speaker 2: In the five minutes it took me to climb back
- 20:44Speaker 2: on my feet, I thought some very unpleasant things about
- 20:48Speaker 2: the brotherhood of man, both fore and aft. But I
- 20:52Speaker 2: dropped them when I remembered the time was running out
- 20:55Speaker 2: fast for my client. I still hadn't got beyond the
- 20:58Speaker 2: loose ends I'd started with. Tap's girlfriend, Gloria, and little Fritz.
- 21:09Speaker 2: It was a hunch that took me up the hill
- 21:10Speaker 2: of the old retired warehouse again. I parked a block
- 21:14Speaker 2: away and started toward it on foot when the glow
- 21:17Speaker 2: from a lonely cigarette said that it wasn't quite as
- 21:19Speaker 2: deserted as it should have been. The cigarette belonged to
- 21:22Speaker 2: a woman who was someplace under a lot of makeup.
- 21:26Speaker 10: Well, interesting evening.
- 21:29Speaker 2: You asking me or telling me?
- 21:31Speaker 10: Well, either it is, it has been, or it could be.
- 21:33Speaker 10: Take your pick. You look like a black boy.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Hey.
- 21:38Speaker 15: You look like you fell into a meat grinder.
- 21:40Speaker 2: No, no. Just a philosophical discussion. Oh.
- 21:46Speaker 10: Nice view from here.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Not too bad.
- 21:48Speaker 15: A girl like me needs a view once in a while.
- 21:50Speaker 15: Keeps the past from crying the future. You can see
- 21:53Speaker 15: the whole waterfront from here without smelling it.
- 21:56Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 21:57Speaker 2: That's great, huh? Now look, you haven't seen anybody hanging
- 22:00Speaker 2: around here in the last few minutes, have you?
- 22:02Speaker 3: No kidding?
- 22:04Speaker 15: Nobody hangs around this old dump. First time I've been
- 22:07Speaker 15: up here in a month. Nobody's hung around here since...
- 22:10Speaker 15: Since old Tom died.
- 22:13Speaker 10: Used to be the night watchman. And it was a
- 22:16Speaker 10: lot of laughs for you, old Tom. He had that
- 22:19Speaker 10: upstairs room. That one up there. And he's the time
- 22:22Speaker 10: I've been.
- 22:24Speaker 10: Hey, that's queer. That's real queer.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Look. What? Oh, a telescope. Mounted on the windowsill.
- 22:33Speaker 15: Yeah, well, Tom never had a thing like that.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Who do you suppose put it there? I know who, honey.
- 22:37Speaker 2: My question is why. Telescope.
- 22:40Speaker 15: Well, it seems to be pointed down there toward the
- 22:42Speaker 15: small boat anchorage.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Where a certain boat was in for paint and repairs.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Tap could watch every step from here when the job
- 22:51Speaker 2: was done. Holy smoke, it could be. Thanks, baby. You've
- 22:54Speaker 2: been a big help. Sure.
- 22:57Speaker 10: All things to all men.
- 23:00Speaker 6: Have fun, sonny.
- 23:11Speaker 2: My client's boat was a long shot, but it was
- 23:13Speaker 2: the only bet I had. And it stayed a long
- 23:15Speaker 2: shot all the way down to Jomo's dock. There the
- 23:18Speaker 2: odds began to drop fast, weaving money, when I heard
- 23:20Speaker 2: the motor running and found the door to Jomo's boathouse
- 23:22Speaker 2: half open. It became odds on when I eased inside
- 23:25Speaker 2: and stumbled over Jomo himself, stretched out unconscious on greasy
- 23:28Speaker 2: planks like a beach bull whale. I stepped over him,
- 23:32Speaker 2: got my. 38 in hand, and edged out along the
- 23:34Speaker 2: catwalk to the open dock where the boat scraped restlessly
- 23:37Speaker 2: against the fenders. There were no lights except for a
- 23:40Speaker 2: tiny spot, no bigger than the hole in the candy
- 23:42Speaker 2: lifesaver that probed frantically along the seams inside the cabin.
- 23:46Speaker 2: It was little Fritz with a shielded flashlight, intent on
- 23:49Speaker 2: finding something fast. I stepped into the boat, deliberately kicked
- 23:53Speaker 2: over an oil can and crouched. The light went out. Who?
- 23:57Speaker 4: Who's there?
- 23:59Speaker 5: Somebody out there?
- 24:00Speaker 2: Well, speak up. Throw your gun over the side and
- 24:02Speaker 2: stand real still. Do it now, little man.
- 24:05Speaker 6: Or I'll blow you in two.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Hold on, wait. Now, who are you? Me, Fritz E.
- 24:11Speaker 7: Marlow.
- 24:13Speaker 2: So Tap hid the stones right here on Bill Sinero's boat, huh?
- 24:16Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right. They're still here.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Fortune.
- 24:19Speaker 6: Hey, look, fella, if we play.
- 24:20Speaker 2: It smart, it's time for both. I want a few
- 24:23Speaker 2: things straight first. Correct me if I'm wrong. Tap hid
- 24:26Speaker 2: the jewels aboard here after the robbery without Sinero's knowledge.
- 24:29Speaker 2: After Sinero was caught, he gave the boat to Jomo,
- 24:31Speaker 2: who kept it locked up inside there. Which meant that
- 24:34Speaker 2: Tap had to wait until Jomo had finished his repairs
- 24:36Speaker 2: before he could get back the stones again, huh? That's right.
- 24:39Speaker 14: They were too hot to handle anyway. They had to
- 24:42Speaker 14: be hid someplace. They were safe here, so I stole
- 24:45Speaker 14: up another flush. What else do you want to know?
- 24:48Speaker 2: Are you going to explain to your little sugar in
- 24:49Speaker 2: San Diego that Christine fully accrued to the night when
- 24:52Speaker 2: you don't show up for a few years?
- 24:53Speaker 6: Mama, we can do business.
- 24:55Speaker 2: And another thing. How'd you get into this act in
- 24:57Speaker 2: the first place?
- 24:59Speaker 6: I got ways, Mike. A couple of friends on the inside.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Oh, I figured. One of them must be on the
- 25:06Speaker 2: inside of a state pen. That's how come you're hooked
- 25:08Speaker 2: on to me so fast with that car.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Who is it?
- 25:11Speaker 6: A guard named Kennedy. He's a pig, a cut-rate chum.
- 25:15Speaker 2: The other friend?
- 25:16Speaker 10: He's behind you with a gun.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Oh, fine.
- 25:19Speaker 6: All right, smart baby.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I'll take your gun now, Mr.
- 25:22Speaker 6: Marlowe.
- 25:23Speaker 10: Stop it.
- 25:25Speaker 15: Put it away, Fitz.
- 25:27Speaker 10: You find the stone?
- 25:28Speaker 6: Not yet, but it won't be long now, sugar.
- 25:30Speaker 10: Marlowe, get in that cabin and run this boat. We're
- 25:32Speaker 10: going out. Go on, move.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Oh, no, wait a minute, baby.
- 25:35Speaker 5: We don't know anything about books.
- 25:36Speaker 10: We're not taking any more chances here. Untie that rope
- 25:39Speaker 10: at the back, Chris.
- 25:40Speaker 2: That's called cast off the stern line.
- 25:41Speaker 4: Shut up!
- 25:43Speaker 10: Get inside, Marlowe.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Go on.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Sure, sure. Well, Skipper, where to?
- 25:51Speaker 10: Just head for that open part out there. Hey, it's
- 25:53Speaker 10: gonna be rough. Well, that's warm out of.
- 25:56Speaker 6: House, baby.
- 25:56Speaker 10: We've been through plenty together, huh?
- 25:58Speaker 2: Yeah, like putting Jesse Tapp out of the way for
- 26:00Speaker 2: a starter.
- 26:01Speaker 6: Sure, when he asked for it. He was a pushover
- 26:03Speaker 6: for Gloria here.
- 26:03Speaker 9: Why, you.
- 26:04Speaker 2: So it was little Gloria who killed him, eh?
- 26:07Speaker 10: All right, so it was me.
- 26:08Speaker 13: Chris called me up and warned me you were coming
- 26:10Speaker 13: here to see Joe, and I overheard you when you.
- 26:12Speaker 10: Talked to Jomo.
- 26:13Speaker 13: I knew you'd get to Jesse and make him spill,
- 26:15Speaker 13: so I killed him. It's going to have to be
- 26:17Speaker 13: done sooner or later anyway.
- 26:18Speaker 2: The old double cross.
- 26:19Speaker 10: Yeah, the old double cross. So what?
- 26:21Speaker 6: That's a game the smart ones always play with the suckers.
- 26:24Speaker 6: Always win.
- 26:25Speaker 10: Not always, Fritz.
- 26:27Speaker 6: Oh, often enough to make a.
- 26:29Speaker 10: What?
- 26:29Speaker 2: There you go.
- 26:30Speaker 6: Glory.
- 26:31Speaker 10: Glory, what?
- 26:31Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no, no. Glory!
- 26:33Speaker 10: No, no, no, no, no, no. Keep your hands on
- 26:36Speaker 10: that wheel, Marlowe. I heard Marlowe's crack about that Christine Fuller, Fritz.
- 26:41Speaker 6: You louse.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Glory. Glory.
- 26:46Speaker 10: Straight ahead, Marlowe.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Now what, baby? Still got me to worry about?
- 26:51Speaker 6: Not too bad.
- 26:51Speaker 10: You're a nice guy. Where are we?
- 26:54Speaker 2: Well, the channel's way over there where that buoy is.
- 26:58Speaker 2: That means that a big rock pile called the breakwater
- 27:00Speaker 2: is right off our starboard bow. If I don't turn,
- 27:03Speaker 2: we'll hit it and I'm not.
- 27:04Speaker 12: Those rocks, Marlowe!
- 27:18Speaker 4: Feeling better now, Mr.
- 27:19Speaker 6: Marlowe?
- 27:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Thanks, Lieutenant. That water was awful cold.
- 27:23Speaker 5: You said it.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Have another cup of Coast Guard mud.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Do you good. Oh, thanks. Look, I was wondering if.
- 27:30Speaker 4: If we located the girl you told us about?
- 27:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:34Speaker 4: She wasn't as lucky as you were. However, your boat
- 27:37Speaker 4: hung up on the rocks. The boys found all that
- 27:39Speaker 4: jewelry in the cabin. In this leather bag here. Well,
- 27:43Speaker 4: we'll be in in a couple of minutes.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Good. Good. I'll just have time to call a young
- 27:47Speaker 2: guy and tell him he can close out his books.
- 27:50Speaker 2: They balance now. He's paid up in full. When I
- 28:00Speaker 2: got through to Warden Riker, told him all that had happened,
- 28:03Speaker 2: and gave him the message for Billy Sinero, he thanked
- 28:06Speaker 2: me and said, the kid was facing 11 o'clock like
- 28:09Speaker 2: someone who, who had the weight of the world lifted
- 28:13Speaker 2: off his back. A back that should have been part
- 28:17Speaker 2: of a football team. A back that should be tanned
- 28:21Speaker 2: from the sun at the beach. A back whose arms
- 28:25Speaker 2: should be around a lovely girl. A back melting prayer
- 28:29Speaker 2: for a better world. A back....
- 28:32Speaker 4: A back with the electric chair.
