- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medore. The Registered Nurses Union adding its voice
- 0:08Speaker 2: to those concerned about a substantial increase coming to fees
- 0:12Speaker 2: associated with the National Nursing Exam. As of next February,
- 0:16Speaker 2: the National Registration fee to write the mandatory nursing exam
- 0:20Speaker 2: will jump to $ 570 from $ 360. That decision was approved
- 0:25Speaker 2: by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Delegate Assembly.
- 0:29Speaker 2: RNU President Yvette Coffey acknowledges it's the first time the
- 0:33Speaker 2: fee has been increased since the year 2000, but she's
- 0:37Speaker 2: calling on the council to reconsider that decision.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Everyone is suffering from inflation, including organizations, businesses, and the public.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So we do recognize, yes, that they do probably need
- 0:49Speaker 1: an increase, but it doesn't have to be a 58% increase.
- 0:53Speaker 1: When we still have, in this province alone, we're still
- 0:56Speaker 1: around 200, 200-plus nursing vacancies. We have students who have
- 1:01Speaker 1: said very clearly the biggest impediment to their education is
- 1:05Speaker 1: the financial cost. And if we're going to further increase
- 1:09Speaker 1: their financial cost, we're not going to keep them in
- 1:13Speaker 1: the system.
- 1:15Speaker 2: A program aimed at helping children cope with traumatic experiences
- 1:18Speaker 2: is expanding its reach across Newfoundland and Labrador. The Buddy
- 1:22Speaker 2: Bear Program, facilitated through the VOCM CARES Foundation, the RNC
- 1:27Speaker 2: and local fire departments, provides stuffed bears to children who
- 1:31Speaker 2: have experienced trauma. Previously available only through the St. John's
- 1:35Speaker 2: Fire Department, the program has now expanded to police and
- 1:39Speaker 2: fire detachments across the province. RNC Constable Steph Meyer says
- 1:43Speaker 2: the bears can help make children feel more comfortable during
- 1:46Speaker 2: difficult situations, particularly when speaking with police.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Child interviews are typically scary for children. They're intimidating and
- 1:56Speaker 3: often come with heavy subject matter. Children often either don't
- 2:01Speaker 3: trust the police or they think that they're in trouble
- 2:03Speaker 3: when they come to speak with us. And hopefully these
- 2:06Speaker 3: bears can assist us in breaking down those barriers and
- 2:09Speaker 3: providing comfort and support to the children when we interview them.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And the town of Holyrood continues to have serious problems
- 2:17Speaker 2: with its water system. They've now brought in a water
- 2:20Speaker 2: truck to provide services. A water truck will be on
- 2:24Speaker 2: site at the Conception Bay Highway and the road to
- 2:26Speaker 2: the Holyrood Generating Station today. Residents will have to bring
- 2:29Speaker 2: their own containers, though, and they'll have to note that
- 2:33Speaker 2: people should note that water is not for drinking or
- 2:37Speaker 2: consumption in any way. Up next, your weather forecast. Buoyed
- 2:50Speaker 2: by financial support from both the federal and provincial governments,
- 2:54Speaker 2: NordSpace plans to launch a satellite into space in a
- 2:57Speaker 2: couple of weeks. Attempts to do so last summer were
- 3:00Speaker 2: unsuccessful for several reasons, including fog and the presence of
- 3:04Speaker 2: marine traffic, but the federal government is confident in the
- 3:08Speaker 2: company's choice to build the space hub in St. Lawrence.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Ottawa says a more expansive foray into space by Canada
- 3:15Speaker 2: is vital, as it's a growing industry on a global scale.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Minister Sean Fraser says we currently are too reliant on
- 3:23Speaker 2: the United States in this regard.
- 3:27Speaker 4: But this investment is going to create a toehold in
- 3:30Speaker 4: Atlantic Canada for a growing industry, which is currently captive
- 3:33Speaker 4: mostly to American service providers. When we see an industry
- 3:37Speaker 4: that's going to add billions of dollars over the next
- 3:40Speaker 4: number of years, we want to ensure that Canadian companies
- 3:43Speaker 4: in the space sector have an opportunity to support Canadian
- 3:45Speaker 4: businesses to launch their satellites or other materials into space
- 3:49Speaker 4: rather than being captive to players in the American economy.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And the Blue Jays play a suppertime game today after
- 3:56Speaker 2: a big win over Seattle last night as they chased
- 3:58Speaker 2: that last wild card spot. I'm Brian Medour.
