- 0:00Gotta ask, you've seen it too, haven't you?
- 0:04Goings-on in France, rioting,
- 0:07vandalism, looting, setting fires to historic
- 0:11buildings, desecrating cultural
- 0:15landmarks. And the question is,
- 0:19why? And who's doing this?
- 0:22And I know I hear it from some Catholics, they're wondering, how this could
- 0:26have happened. Because after all, just a couple of weeks ago, the Pope
- 0:31was in France. There were big crowds. Things were going to get
- 0:35better. The big crowds that the Pope drew was proof,
- 0:38proof that things had changed. The people weren't satisfied
- 0:42with business as usual. And there was in fact a
- 0:46great spiritual hunger.
- 0:50That's one way. Of reading recent events. Uh, I have a
- 0:54slightly different way. Stay with me, I've got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit
- 0:58Father Robert McTeague, your host every day of the Catholic Current, coming to you from
- 1:00the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look.
- 1:05Glad you're here. Depending upon who you believe and what you've been listening
- 1:09to, there were some protests because students were unhappy
- 1:13with the money spent on schools, and some of the schools
- 1:17didn't have air conditioning, etc. And however true that was,
- 1:21this is just spun out of control.
- 1:24All over France, there is chaos,
- 1:29violent, ugly chaos.
- 1:32And that's spreading to Belgium. It's spreading to Italy.
- 1:36Uh, it's spreading to Albania. Will Britain be next?
- 1:40Germany? Spain hasn't been doing well recently either, but I want
- 1:44to focus on France. And again, it's because of the recent papal
- 1:47visits where people thought the This was— dare
- 1:51we hope for it? Dare we say it?— a new springtime.
- 1:55The Pope was there, great big crowds cheering, applause,
- 1:58and then insanity.
- 2:03I think I have an explanation. To just
- 2:07show up and gawk as
- 2:10the Popemobile goes by,
- 2:14that's merely an event,
- 2:18a spectacle. Curiosity or the
- 2:21desire to show up on social media could have driven the crowds, and then
- 2:26they went on their way. And how changed
- 2:30were they for having been there when the Popemobile drove by,
- 2:34or maybe hearing the Pope speak at an outdoor Mass somewhere?
- 2:37How much change was there? You can't
- 2:41really measure those things, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say
- 2:45there was probably as much change from the
- 2:48recent papal visit in France, a change for the good, as much
- 2:53of a change for the good as there was in England after
- 2:57Pope Benedict XVI visited England for the beatification of Cardinal
- 3:01Newman in 2010. Yes, that much positive
- 3:06change. You see, merely gawking at
- 3:10a spectacle doesn't cost anything. It doesn't demand anything.
- 3:14It doesn't plant seeds deep in the soil of
- 3:18the soul. But somebody has been planting
- 3:23seeds deep in the soil of the soul of French children.
- 3:27Why do I say that? Because I was horrified to see a video
- 3:31uploaded by the children themselves, young ethnic French
- 3:35teenagers vandalizing a church in the Vendée,
- 3:39about which more in a moment. And while singing along to a
- 3:43rap song glorifying a man who is a self-described,
- 3:48shall we say, uh, misunderstanding of the
- 3:51religion of peace, who had been celebrated for murdering
- 3:55Jewish children. So these ethnically French
- 3:59kids were vandalizing a church in the Vendée while
- 4:04singing along with gusto to that rap song. Why is
- 4:08the location of the Vendée important? Because that's an area of France,
- 4:12very Catholic area of France, that adamantly resisted the
- 4:17French Revolution, the depredations of the French Revolution,
- 4:20and they paid a terrible price in their own blood.
- 4:24And it was there that those ethnically French children
- 4:27decided to desecrate a church while singing
- 4:31the praises of a man of another religion who murdered children.
- 4:36Someone planted seeds deep in the soil
- 4:40of the souls of those children,
- 4:45and now they're bearing fruit.
- 4:49Bitter fruit, poisonous fruit, but fruit nonetheless.
- 4:54Nobody just drove by and got those kids excited once.
- 4:58There was a plan, and there was a lot of work. And I have to
- 5:01say, There were a lot of failures.
- 5:05Large swaths of the French membership of the People Who Should
- 5:09Really Know Better Club, including senior Catholic cadres of
- 5:13the French division of the People Who Should Really Know Better Club,
- 5:16failed to be salt and light for those
- 5:19children. And now those children celebrate
- 5:24the murders of other children, and they are infected
- 5:28with self-loathing and self-destructiveness.
- 5:32And my fear is that people will
- 5:36be disinclined to talk about how it
- 5:39happened, who was responsible, and what difficult
- 5:44things must be done next in order to correct it.
- 5:48So as I see large swaths of Christian Europe on
- 5:52fire, I have to ask, What do
- 5:55Europeans intend to bequeath to their children
- 6:00at the moment? Remember this basic principle of organizational
- 6:04psychology: the purpose of a system is what it does. So it seems
- 6:07to me the purpose of European culture right now is to
- 6:11hand on debt, destruction, and demographic
- 6:15disaster to their offspring.
- 6:20It doesn't have to be that way. There is
- 6:24an alternative. I'm going to take a risk here
- 6:27and quote myself. This is from a sermon I preached in 2013,
- 6:32and I think it's something that should be on the mind of all Christians
- 6:36everywhere. In 2013, I said this from the pulpit: With
- 6:40God's grace, we can choose who will write the pages
- 6:43of our history. Whether it will be written by our enemies standing
- 6:47upon our graves and the smoldering ruins of our culture,
- 6:51or whether it will be written by our children who learn in our
- 6:55schools and pray in our churches.
- 6:59That's what I said 13 years ago. I don't know
- 7:03how many people listened. Maybe this time it'll
- 7:07be different. We have work
- 7:11to do. Christians have work to do while
- 7:16there is still time. I'll be talking about this more in
- 7:19the near future. Meanwhile, think of these things today,
- 7:23take them to prayer, and talk about it with those you love. Go in peace,
- 7:27and please do pray for me, for I am a
- 7:31sinner.
