- 0:12Hello friends, it is shown here. It's Wednesday, it's the 27th of
- 0:17March and we are getting real close to the Easter weekend
- 0:23here, only for two more sleeps to go until it is Good Friday.
- 0:28It's not long at all, is it? And today?
- 0:31Today we have a reading from Mark that really causes a bunch
- 0:34of consternation. It's it's a chapter where Jesus
- 0:37talks about the future. And there are a lot of very,
- 0:41very wise bowlers who have spent their careers dissecting this
- 0:46chapter, trying to work out exactly what Jesus meant in each
- 0:51of the the things that he talks about and looking for evidence
- 0:54to support the fact that what he said has come true or will come
- 0:57true and what historical things he might be referring to.
- 1:02And that's great because they have achieved many PHD's doing
- 1:06that. But I think the the purpose of
- 1:09Mark writing this chapter is for us to know, not not to get
- 1:12freaked out, but for us to know without a shadow of a doubt that
- 1:17Jesus holds the future in his hands and he knows everything
- 1:22that happens throughout time. So we don't need to get bogged
- 1:27down by all the details, because all the smartest people in the
- 1:30world haven't been able to work that out with any kind of
- 1:33cohesion or collective clarity. But we can sit at the feet of
- 1:39our Saviour and be in awe. The fact that he lives outside
- 1:44of time and space and knows everything?
- 1:47Ohhh let us read it together. Let's read together.
- 1:50Mark chapter 13 as Jesus was leaving the temple
- 2:04that day, one of his disciples said.
- 2:07Teacher, Look at these magnificent buildings.
- 2:10Look at the impressive stones in the walls, Jesus replied.
- 2:15Yes, look at these great buildings, but they will be
- 2:19completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on
- 2:23top of another. Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of
- 2:28Olives across the valley from the temple.
- 2:30Peter, James, John and Andrew came to him privately and asked
- 2:34him, tell us when will all this happen?
- 2:38What sign will show us that these things are about to be
- 2:41fulfilled? Jesus replied.
- 2:44Don't let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name
- 2:48claiming I am the Messiah. They will deceive many, and you
- 2:53will hear of wars and threats of wars.
- 2:57But don't panic. Yes, these things must take
- 3:00place, but the end won't follow immediately.
- 3:04Nation will go to war against nation and Kingdom against
- 3:08Kingdom. There will be earthquakes in
- 3:10many parts of the world, as well as famines, but this is only the
- 3:14first of the birth pains, with more to come.
- 3:18When these things begin to happen, watch out.
- 3:21You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the
- 3:25synagogues. You will stand trial before
- 3:28governors and kings, because you are my followers, but this will
- 3:32be your opportunity to tell them about me.
- 3:36For the good news must first be preached to all nations.
- 3:40But when you are arrested and stand trial, don't worry in
- 3:44advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at
- 3:48that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy
- 3:53Spirit. A brother will betray his
- 3:56brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and
- 4:00children will rebel against their parents and cause them to
- 4:03be killed. And everyone will hate you
- 4:06because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the
- 4:10end will be saved. The day is coming when you will
- 4:15see the sacrilegious object that causes desecration, standing
- 4:20where he should not be. Remember, pay attention then.
- 4:25Those in Judea must flee to the hills.
- 4:28A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the
- 4:32house to pack. A person out in the field must
- 4:35not return, even to get a coat. How terrible it will be for
- 4:40pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days.
- 4:43And pray that your flight will not be in winter, for there will
- 4:47be greater anguish in those days than at any time since God
- 4:52created the world, and it will never be so great again.
- 4:56In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity,
- 5:01not a single person will survive.
- 5:03But for the sake of his chosen ones, he has shortened those
- 5:08days. Then if anyone tells you, look,
- 5:12here is the Messiah or there he is, don't believe it.
- 5:16For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and
- 5:20perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even
- 5:24God's chosen ones. Watch out.
- 5:28I have warned you about this ahead of time.
- 5:31At that time, after the anguish of those days, the sun will be
- 5:35darkened, the moon will give no light.
- 5:39The stars will fall from the sky, and the powers and the
- 5:43heavens will be shaken. Then everyone will see the Son
- 5:48of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory, and he
- 5:54will send out his angels to gather His chosen ones from all
- 5:58over the world, from the farthest ends of the earth and
- 6:01heaven. Now learn a lesson from the fig
- 6:05tree. When its branches bud and its
- 6:08leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near.
- 6:12In the same way, when you see all these things taking place,
- 6:15you can know that his return is very near, right at the door.
- 6:20I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from
- 6:24the scene before all these things take place.
- 6:28Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never
- 6:32disappear. However, no one knows the day or
- 6:36hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in
- 6:39heaven or the sun himself. Only the Father knows, and since
- 6:45you don't know when that time will come, be on guard, stay
- 6:49alert. The coming of the Son of Man can
- 6:53be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip.
- 6:56When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about
- 7:00the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for
- 7:04his return. You too must keep watch, for you
- 7:08don't know when the master of the household will return in the
- 7:12evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at Daybreak.
- 7:17Don't let him find you sleeping. When he arrives without warning,
- 7:21I say to you what I say to everyone.
- 7:25Watch for him, Lord, reading these predictions
- 7:38about the future, it's it's enough to bring any of us
- 7:42anxiety. And Lord, as we think about our
- 7:45futures, there is so much about them that can fill us with
- 7:48anxiety. But here you give us such clear
- 7:53instructions. Just set our hearts on you,
- 7:59Follow you. Everything else is secondary.
- 8:03You are our priority. Help that clarity sink deep into
- 8:10our souls so that as we walk through our days here in our
- 8:15lives, it can be you who always remains our true North Star.
- 8:23We love you, and we know, we know that you are the most
- 8:27glorious thing in our lives. But sometimes the other voices
- 8:32are so loud and they're hard to ignore or hard to put into their
- 8:37place beneath your sovereign throne and our lives.
- 8:41So once again we offer our lives to you.
- 8:46We place everything below your throne, and we worship you above
- 8:50all others. For you hold the universe and
- 8:54all time and all things to come in your powerful, loving,
- 9:00gentle, sacrificial hands. Thank you.
- 9:06Thank you that you hold all of this, and you hold us so gently
- 9:12with so much love, and we pray all of this in your name.
- 9:17Jesus, oh man.
