- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to another episode of Inside the Data
- 0:13Speaker 1: On Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher and we bring
- 0:15Speaker 1: in our analytics man, Sam, the man Finkle. What's going on, Sam,
- 0:20Speaker 1: There's nothing like going into a game and taking a
- 0:23Speaker 1: deep analytical dive into a game where one team took
- 0:26Speaker 1: the first three quarters off. So I'm sure that didn't
- 0:29Speaker 1: skew the numbers at all, but the Eagles didn't come
- 0:32Speaker 1: out and win thirty three twenty six and probably one
- 0:34Speaker 1: of the more wilder games you'll ever see.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right, and the numbers were you
- 0:40Speaker 2: know what the numbers were.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I can imagine. I mean they won the game, to
- 0:45Speaker 1: be honest with you, because they blocked two field goals,
- 0:47Speaker 1: one right at the as time expired. And I'm not
- 0:51Speaker 1: quite sure what kind of analytical data you get for that.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I mean, it's when we go through offensive defense, it's
- 0:56Speaker 1: gonna probably look like the like they dominated. The Rams
- 1:01Speaker 1: dominated the Eagles in certain areas. But obviously a championship
- 1:05Speaker 1: team makes a championship players to come through, and that's
- 1:07Speaker 1: what the Eagles did. So looking forward to getting into
- 1:11Speaker 1: the numbers and the data and maybe we can all
- 1:13Speaker 1: even forecast a little bit what that might mean for
- 1:16Speaker 1: Sunday's game in Tampa, which is going to be a
- 1:18Speaker 1: hot one. My friend, ninety seven degrees is the expected temperature.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Now here's a good one. Here's a great question for
- 1:26Speaker 1: you going off the rails a little bit because you
- 1:29Speaker 1: coach the Penn State so you've been on the sidelines.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I've never understood why there's a difference between the actual
- 1:36Speaker 1: temperature and the field temperature. Is there something about grass
- 1:41Speaker 1: or turf in particular, or the way a stadium is
- 1:44Speaker 1: built that it's hotter on the field than the actual surrounding.
- 1:48Speaker 2: So I mean, I'm not going to go into the
- 1:50Speaker 2: science of it, because frankly, I don't know the science.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We put that Penn State education in a work, no doubt.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I do know that it feels very differ on the
- 2:00Speaker 2: field than it does in the stands, and what they
- 2:03Speaker 2: do is they try to control that temperature. So like
- 2:06Speaker 2: whether it's a really hot game, which, to be honest
- 2:08Speaker 2: with you, at Penn State, we didn't really have too
- 2:10Speaker 2: many hot games, true, or or a cold game like
- 2:13Speaker 2: we had. We do a lot of you know, climate
- 2:17Speaker 2: control like we have Basically we had heaters everywhere for
- 2:21Speaker 2: like the Winter Games, and I'm sure they have fans
- 2:24Speaker 2: everywhere for the really really warm games. Actually I think
- 2:27Speaker 2: we did have fans for like the earlier games en State.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean that's that's what they say. I
- 2:34Speaker 2: can say from a personal experience, it's true. I don't
- 2:37Speaker 2: know if I can say from a scientific lens at all,
- 2:39Speaker 2: or you know.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I was wondering if if they, if anybody ever
- 2:43Speaker 1: explained why the case was, you know, especially to coaching staff.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Why you know, you see it on TV all the
- 2:47Speaker 1: time they say all their temperature is even last year
- 2:50Speaker 1: in Tampa it was in the mid to upper nineties,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but they kept saying the field temperature was over one
- 2:55Speaker 1: hundred degrees and you saw it, man, I mean that
- 2:57Speaker 1: people were wearing out in that game.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I mean from turf, it makes a lot of sense,
- 3:01Speaker 2: right right, it'll absorb the heat a little bit more.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But grass, I'm not one hundred percent sure of the reason.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I know, heat rises, and it's like a basic thing,
- 3:09Speaker 2: so you think it would be warmer in the but
- 3:11Speaker 2: but I don't. I don't know. That's a fun one.
- 3:13Speaker 2: If anybody knows the answer to that, you know, feel
- 3:15Speaker 2: free to you know, calm it away.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Plus I thought of maybe like the magnifying glass
- 3:21Speaker 1: at impact, where you're in a stadium, there's no trees,
- 3:23Speaker 1: there's nothing block. It's a direct hit from the rays
- 3:27Speaker 1: down to That makes sense purpose. So anyway, that's what
- 3:31Speaker 1: the Eagles will have to deal with on Sunday, And
- 3:32Speaker 1: of course we'll break that down next week, but we
- 3:34Speaker 1: are gonna go inside the analytics here on the eagles
- 3:39Speaker 1: thrilling win against the La Rams. And the Rams are
- 3:42Speaker 1: now two and one. The Eagles remain undefeated at three
- 3:47Speaker 1: and oh. So let's take a look Sam. We as
- 3:50Speaker 1: we always do, we start off a little bit of
- 3:51Speaker 1: the the basic stuff and then we get into the
- 3:54Speaker 1: real advanced analytics. So of the basic numbers as I
- 3:59Speaker 1: have it here on screen, what stands out to you?
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean what really stands out is the time
- 4:06Speaker 2: of possession is pretty close. But the Eagles won, and again,
- 4:10Speaker 2: as we've discussed that, it seems to be their brand
- 4:12Speaker 2: of football.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yep.
- 4:14Speaker 2: One thing I am like now realizing I probably should
- 4:17Speaker 2: have grabbed for this because I think it would be
- 4:19Speaker 2: interesting was the average starting field position. Yeah, I think
- 4:24Speaker 2: the Rams because at Penn State that was one of
- 4:27Speaker 2: the things we talked about, like one of the keys
- 4:28Speaker 2: to winning was also, you know, make flipping the field
- 4:32Speaker 2: and making sure that you win in the average starting
- 4:35Speaker 2: field position. And I can guarantee you the Eagles did
- 4:37Speaker 2: not win on that. They often were backed up and
- 4:39Speaker 2: have bad positions like average starting field position.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it started off great when they picked
- 4:44Speaker 1: off Matthew Stafford and had like a half a field,
- 4:46Speaker 1: not even that a quarter of a field to go with.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And then from there because of the knuckleball, the knuckleball
- 4:53Speaker 1: kickoffs really gave it an issue for the kick returners
- 4:56Speaker 1: as we all saw no doubt.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Is there anything that stood out to you in these stats,
- 5:00Speaker 2: I mean Rams with most of everything and Eagles tie
- 5:03Speaker 2: and some stuff.
- 5:04Speaker 1: So yeah, I was actually surprised at the Eagles one
- 5:07Speaker 1: time of possession only because the Rams are and were
- 5:10Speaker 1: in this game a ball control offense. Their RAMS ran
- 5:13Speaker 1: the ball really well for at least three quarters and
- 5:17Speaker 1: it seemed like when the Eagles did score, like, for example,
- 5:20Speaker 1: take the Eagles second touchdown, which is sort of they're
- 5:24Speaker 1: down twenty six to seven. That came in my I
- 5:27Speaker 1: think it came in two plays. It came basically on
- 5:29Speaker 1: a twenty eight yard pass to aj Brown followed by
- 5:32Speaker 1: a thirty three yard passed to Dallas Goddard. So that
- 5:36Speaker 1: was two explosives in a row and bam. Now I know,
- 5:39Speaker 1: the next two drives they did a much better, well
- 5:42Speaker 1: not better, I mean the next two drives they were
- 5:43Speaker 1: more deliberate with their offense. But I would have fought
- 5:47Speaker 1: the Rams. Like if you just watched the game, it
- 5:49Speaker 1: felt like the Rams had the ball longer than the
- 5:52Speaker 1: Eagles did.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it did feel that way, but it
- 5:56Speaker 2: just goes to show you that, like that is a
- 5:59Speaker 2: big emphasis this Eagles team, is that time.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Of possession, right, yards per past That doesn't surprise me,
- 6:07Speaker 1: because the Eagles did finally get there. You know, I'm
- 6:10Speaker 1: sure through three quarters that number was not anywhere near
- 6:13Speaker 1: five point six and matching the Rams, but obviously the
- 6:16Speaker 1: it's heavily skewed by the last part.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:19Speaker 1: The yards per rush doesn't surprise me, but it might
- 6:23Speaker 1: surprise people to realize that the Rams averaged over five
- 6:27Speaker 1: yards per rush. But I actually did. I mean, anybody
- 6:31Speaker 1: who watched the game could tell the Eagles did not
- 6:33Speaker 1: play good run defense until the fourth quarter. And then
- 6:36Speaker 1: I went through every single Kyrin Williams and Blake Korham
- 6:39Speaker 1: run for a story I did on Philly Voice, and
- 6:42Speaker 1: to look at the breakdowns, and when you watch them
- 6:46Speaker 1: you could see, I mean, the Eagles did not play
- 6:48Speaker 1: good run defense, especially the two guys in the big
- 6:50Speaker 1: in the middle, Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter, until it
- 6:53Speaker 1: mattered in the fourth quarter when they had some nice stops,
- 6:56Speaker 1: But for three quarters they did They were moved off
- 6:58Speaker 1: the ball constantly, are out of gaps, and Williams and
- 7:02Speaker 1: Quorum are both really good sam it like kind of
- 7:05Speaker 1: getting skinny through those holes and wiggling out of something.
- 7:08Speaker 1: So it just wasn't great run defense for the Eagles. No.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Absolutely. You couldn't set it better myself, all right.
- 7:14Speaker 1: So that's a basic look. Now we get into the really,
- 7:17Speaker 1: really juicy stuff that you're gonna have to go into
- 7:20Speaker 1: explain a lot of this to us. The advanced stats,
- 7:24Speaker 1: so remind us here we have for those who are
- 7:26Speaker 1: watching at home, you've got the green column. Well, you
- 7:29Speaker 1: have three columns here. It's what the Eagles season averages.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It's what they did in Week three and what the
- 7:34Speaker 1: Rams did against the Eagles in Week three, and then
- 7:37Speaker 1: you color code things. So if the Eagles were better
- 7:40Speaker 1: in any of the categories, they get a green, if
- 7:42Speaker 1: they were worse, they get a red. What's the in between,
- 7:44Speaker 1: beijus hope.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah, So this analysis really should be done and we
- 7:50Speaker 2: will explain it in two separate increments. Right, So it
- 7:52Speaker 2: should be the Eagles season versus the Eagles performance, and
- 7:55Speaker 2: then it should be the Eagles performance versus their opponent's performance. Right.
- 7:58Speaker 2: So the way that's distinct wished is that darker green
- 8:01Speaker 2: is their season compared to the week and then the
- 8:05Speaker 2: lighter beige is if they're basically if they did better
- 8:09Speaker 2: than their opponent, that's the comparison. And where you see,
- 8:14Speaker 2: you know, the darker the darker green in the middle,
- 8:18Speaker 2: it just means that it was the best out of
- 8:20Speaker 2: It only happened in one. The EPA per pass.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Right, So the Eagles had a better EPA per pass
- 8:27Speaker 1: than the Rams in Week three because they were at
- 8:30Speaker 1: zero which and the Rams were at a minus number.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Right. Well, that that's EPA per play, yeah, per play
- 8:36Speaker 2: per play, right, So that's why.
- 8:38Speaker 1: But in general, the Eagles did not exceed or match
- 8:44Speaker 1: their EPA per play for what the season is. So
- 8:46Speaker 1: they were below their season average but still better than the.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Rams, and they brought their season average down.
- 8:51Speaker 1: So because I would think so, So, when you have
- 8:54Speaker 1: a zero point zero zero EPA per play, it means
- 8:57Speaker 1: that you had the same number of play that did
- 9:00Speaker 1: not result positively toward a score as you did.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Have yeah more or less?
- 9:07Speaker 1: Okay, interesting, what kind of makes sense? I mean again,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you get like first three quarters of just a completely
- 9:15Speaker 1: dormant offense and then you have explosives left and right
- 9:19Speaker 1: for the last you know, eighteen minutes of the game.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Absolutely, so it is that's why the numbers are very
- 9:25Speaker 2: wonky in this one. And honestly, this is a game
- 9:28Speaker 2: that's a perfect example of why you don't just look
- 9:30Speaker 2: at one game, because this game had so many outliers
- 9:34Speaker 2: in it that you really need the rest of the
- 9:36Speaker 2: season to like determine what this team is.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Right, So, I think I'm surprised by the EPA per
- 9:42Speaker 1: pass and per rush you've got. And according to the
- 9:47Speaker 1: next Gen stats, so so, the Eagles EPA pass against
- 9:51Speaker 1: the Rams was minus point oh two, which is that's
- 9:56Speaker 1: actually better than their season average, right of minus point
- 9:58Speaker 1: oh eight. Okay, but it's is it lower back? Now
- 10:04Speaker 1: the negatives are getting to me, and the Rams do
- 10:06Speaker 1: better or worse? Here? They were worse, right, they were worse. Yeah,
- 10:09Speaker 1: that's surprising to me because I just you know, the
- 10:11Speaker 1: Rams seem to move the ball more fluidly through I
- 10:13Speaker 1: know Stafford missed a ton of passes, but that just
- 10:16Speaker 1: surprised me a little.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, it's all it's like an adjusted
- 10:20Speaker 2: based on where you are in the field, what's expected, right,
- 10:24Speaker 2: It's it's really formulaic the way it's kind of derived.
- 10:28Speaker 2: But essentially the Eagles put them. It's putting yourself in
- 10:33Speaker 2: a position to score, and the Eagles bypassing kind of
- 10:37Speaker 2: took a little bit away from their ability to score.
- 10:39Speaker 2: The Rams did a worse job at you know, moving
- 10:42Speaker 2: the ball through the passing, at least in the advanced analytics.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Right, And you would say the same about running the ball. Yeah, yeah, See,
- 10:52Speaker 1: I don't get that because Sequon Barkley had very few
- 10:55Speaker 1: rushing lanes, and Kyra Williams and Blake Krum had a
- 10:57Speaker 1: bunch of really not just good runs, but they were
- 11:00Speaker 1: runs to scoring.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Drives, sure, and those all way in, but there are
- 11:05Speaker 2: a bunch of factors that go into it, and Okay,
- 11:07Speaker 2: you know it's it's not just about good runs, it's
- 11:10Speaker 2: about it can you keep them on schedule? You know?
- 11:12Speaker 2: Is it an ability to put them in a position
- 11:15Speaker 2: to score, Like what's expected at that yard line, what's
- 11:17Speaker 2: expected you know on that field position. It's it's it's
- 11:22Speaker 2: a pretty complicated analysis that we honestly, maybe one day
- 11:25Speaker 2: we'll just go through each play and see like what
- 11:27Speaker 2: the EPA would be.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be a really good idea. Like I
- 11:31Speaker 1: get like, maybe if you have a run that's two
- 11:33Speaker 1: yards and it's it's you know, third and three, then
- 11:36Speaker 1: that's not a good right that that would not be
- 11:38Speaker 1: considered a plus EPA on that rush. But you know,
- 11:43Speaker 1: I would love I just just having gone through every
- 11:45Speaker 1: single Rams run, it seems like they did. They got
- 11:48Speaker 1: the requisite number of yards they would need on most runs,
- 11:51Speaker 1: if not more right, Yeah.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I mean, like for example, if it's if it's third
- 11:55Speaker 2: and ten and you get nine yards, it would be
- 11:58Speaker 2: a negative EPA.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Oh because it's third. Yeah, because it's third and ten.
- 12:02Speaker 1: That makes sense. Yeah, But I felt like the Rams
- 12:04Speaker 1: were constantly ahead of the chains.
- 12:05Speaker 2: That's why they did they did a very good job
- 12:07Speaker 2: of it, but uh yeah, for whatever reason, that's what
- 12:10Speaker 2: came down.
- 12:11Speaker 1: So, Okay, the TTE T S and the TTPIE is
- 12:15Speaker 1: time to throw, time.
- 12:16Speaker 2: To pressure and then my mt BP.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, the category you created. So what did you
- 12:23Speaker 1: determine from all that? Because the Eagles were pretty close
- 12:25Speaker 1: to their seasonal averages on that.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it. The thing is that Hurts had
- 12:32Speaker 2: to get the ball out a little quicker because the
- 12:36Speaker 2: pressure was a little bit it got there a little faster. Yeah,
- 12:40Speaker 2: And I think that it tells a pretty good job
- 12:42Speaker 2: because that's what happened. But what's interesting is that it
- 12:46Speaker 2: was almost the same for the Rams, right, I mean there,
- 12:50Speaker 2: their time to pressure was significantly faster, but so was
- 12:54Speaker 2: Stafford's time to throw. So it was sped up a
- 12:57Speaker 2: little bit by the pressure, but also because Stafford releases
- 13:00Speaker 2: the ball faster than Hurts.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Right right now, the quarterback pressure to your point, I mean, man,
- 13:07Speaker 1: forty eight points, Hurts was pressured on nearly half of
- 13:10Speaker 1: his dropbacks because the Rams sent a lot. The Rams
- 13:13Speaker 1: came into the game. Sam the third had the third
- 13:16Speaker 1: lowest blitz percentage in the NFL, something like twelve percent.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And they blitzed him at a rate like I think
- 13:22Speaker 1: over thirty five percent. Yeah, so you can tell the
- 13:26Speaker 1: teams are doing things differently, they're coming out of their
- 13:28Speaker 1: comfort zone. They're getting out of character to try to
- 13:31Speaker 1: do things to stop the Eagles offense.
- 13:33Speaker 2: One hundred percent. And you're right, you totally can see that,
- 13:38Speaker 2: and it it was pretty effective in the first half, right,
- 13:41Speaker 2: I mean, the Eagles had to make some serious adjustments
- 13:44Speaker 2: in order to you know, put themselves in a position
- 13:46Speaker 2: to even win the game.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Right, right, And then of course the sack percentage way
- 13:51Speaker 1: higher than the season total. He took four sacks Jalen
- 13:54Speaker 1: Hurts on only I think, what do you have, Like
- 13:56Speaker 1: how many dropbacks did he have? If I remember correctly,
- 13:59Speaker 1: it was thirty So yeah, or yeah, that's gonna make
- 14:03Speaker 1: that percentage be high higher than it's it's normally, which
- 14:07Speaker 1: is around eight point three, which is still kind of high.
- 14:09Speaker 1: But we've talked about that Hurts always for the last
- 14:12Speaker 1: few years. Hurts is at a high sack percentage because
- 14:15Speaker 1: he holds onto the ball, but it isn't usually fumble
- 14:17Speaker 1: the ball. He did this game, but ordinarily he does not.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Correct right, average separation here so this is wide receivers
- 14:26Speaker 1: and tight ends and how how will they separate.
- 14:29Speaker 2: How well they separate upon targets. I think it's a
- 14:32Speaker 2: really important distinction that they only track it when they're targeted.
- 14:36Speaker 2: So I think it's like it kind of shows more
- 14:39Speaker 2: than just the receiver. It shows like what where the
- 14:41Speaker 2: quarterback is putting like what kind of windows the quarterback
- 14:44Speaker 2: is putting it right? And so on both sides they
- 14:47Speaker 2: had to do throw in tight windows. I mean, I
- 14:50Speaker 2: think you saw that on both sides of the ball
- 14:52Speaker 2: one percent.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Sure, Like if you think about the two biggest A. J.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Brown catches, the first one where he went for twenty
- 14:58Speaker 1: eight yards that's set up they got her touchdown, and
- 15:01Speaker 1: then the third down one where he kind of muscled
- 15:04Speaker 1: his way to the first, which was some beautiful, beautiful throw,
- 15:08Speaker 1: beautiful catch, beautiful everything, not like there was a whole
- 15:11Speaker 1: lot of separation. In fact, in the twenty eight yarder
- 15:13Speaker 1: he basically had to it was great coverage, he had
- 15:16Speaker 1: a one hand that right. And then in the red
- 15:18Speaker 1: zone touchdowns, they were pretty pretty tight coverage there and
- 15:22Speaker 1: then Nikua and I think the only two catches I
- 15:25Speaker 1: can think of where you had big separation was the
- 15:30Speaker 1: DeVante Adams touchdown against Reid blanket ship and the Dallas
- 15:33Speaker 1: got her touchdown against the inverted Tampa tu.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Look yep, agreed. Everything else was pretty tight and tightly contested. Yeah,
- 15:42Speaker 2: which is a testament to both of these defenses and
- 15:44Speaker 2: honestly both of the offenses.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Yep, yep. I mean, man, I came out of this
- 15:49Speaker 1: game thinking both these teams were really good.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I mean, honestly, if for being fair, the Eagles got
- 15:56Speaker 1: a little I mean, you make your breaks. They blocked
- 15:58Speaker 1: the field goals. That was a breakdown by the Rams.
- 16:01Speaker 1: But that's not going to happen every game.
- 16:03Speaker 2: No, you can't rely on that to win games consistently.
- 16:07Speaker 2: And so you know, I honestly, I was glad the
- 16:12Speaker 2: Eagles faced a little adversity because I think it showed
- 16:15Speaker 2: where their problems were. Yeah, and now the question is
- 16:19Speaker 2: like are you going to fix them? Right? We know
- 16:22Speaker 2: what the problems are. These are things that will lose
- 16:25Speaker 2: you games if you do not address them. So I
- 16:27Speaker 2: think it's interesting to see how they will respond, especially
- 16:30Speaker 2: against the team in Tampa that has given them a
- 16:32Speaker 2: lot of trouble recently.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Just curious if you put your offensive coordinator hat on,
- 16:37Speaker 1: what kind of things would you do differently to get
- 16:39Speaker 1: the offense going faster.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that you need to run a little
- 16:44Speaker 2: bit more play action. I think you need to sorry,
- 16:48Speaker 2: I think you need to also do target intermediate routes
- 16:51Speaker 2: a little bit more. And I think you need to
- 16:53Speaker 2: become a little less one dimensional.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Agree. Yeah, yeah, I think coming out throwing the ball
- 16:59Speaker 1: a little bit to not you don't have to skew
- 17:00Speaker 1: the percentages, but just throw a little earlier so you
- 17:03Speaker 1: can get some gut bodies off the line of scrimmage
- 17:05Speaker 1: and off Saquon probably would help. Yeah, we've done that
- 17:08Speaker 1: before too. I mean I remember the Steelers game that
- 17:10Speaker 1: came out throwing last year. I mean there are times
- 17:12Speaker 1: that they figure it out and then then you start
- 17:15Speaker 1: to ride your running back who's got less on him
- 17:18Speaker 1: and he breaks big plays. Hey, you know that one
- 17:21Speaker 1: guy in the group chat who hit a five leg
- 17:23Speaker 1: parlay Week one and he wouldn't shut up about it
- 17:26Speaker 1: for the rest of the season. Sounds like Kaplan, right, Yeah, Yeah,
- 17:29Speaker 1: it could be him. It could be you, and we
- 17:32Speaker 1: would all want to be you. My bookie makes it
- 17:36Speaker 1: stupid easy. To get in on the action, whether it's
- 17:39Speaker 1: college ball, NFL Super Contest and Survivor pools. All the spreads,
- 17:45Speaker 1: player props and in game lines that you could want,
- 17:48Speaker 1: all under one roof. What more could you want than that?

- 19:32Speaker 1: Speaking of the running back, run success and run stuff
- 19:35Speaker 1: rate not great for the Eagles.
- 19:37Speaker 2: And here's what's interesting, right we look at their run
- 19:40Speaker 2: success it's at sixty one point three percent the rams, right, yeah,
- 19:44Speaker 2: and you talk we talked about the negative EPA per rush, right, yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 2: it's it's again negative zero point zero three is almost negligible.
- 19:52Speaker 2: By the way, it's almost zero. So I think it's
- 19:56Speaker 2: probably skewed by some like really negative running plays. I'm
- 20:00Speaker 2: blanking on.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I give you a two. There was the third and
- 20:04Speaker 1: one that was stopped by Jordan Davis actually had two. Yeah, no,
- 20:10Speaker 1: I'm sorry, the third and two he chased Stafford to
- 20:12Speaker 1: the south. Does that count because that's a Stafford run.
- 20:16Speaker 2: That would probably that would count as as a rush.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I think so it would okay, because it was it
- 20:22Speaker 1: really was.
- 20:22Speaker 2: It was it was a scrambled play, but he scrambled
- 20:25Speaker 2: right right, it probably I think it does count in
- 20:28Speaker 2: pass right.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Well, then they also ran it on fourth and one
- 20:32Speaker 1: and got stuff there as well, and no know it
- 20:34Speaker 1: was a fourth and two that where McVeigh I don't know
- 20:37Speaker 1: he kicked the field goal. He should have gone for it.
- 20:38Speaker 1: But either way, there were some there were two or
- 20:40Speaker 1: three big third and fourth down plays in the fourth quarter.
- 20:44Speaker 2: If you go for a fourth down and don't get
- 20:47Speaker 2: it in a run, it will have a huge effect
- 20:51Speaker 2: on your EPA, especially well especially if you're in field
- 20:54Speaker 2: goal range, right, because it were yeah, so so that
- 20:57Speaker 2: would probably be like a minus four by the way, wow,
- 21:01Speaker 2: because right you're expected to get at least three, if
- 21:03Speaker 2: not more, right, so, anywhere between three and four probably
- 21:08Speaker 2: depending on where they are in the field.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Right. So this is the equivalent of like a dink
- 21:12Speaker 1: and dunk thing where you ran the ball well sixty
- 21:14Speaker 1: one point three percent, but it didn't lead you to
- 21:17Speaker 1: enough big plays and points like that dinks and dunks
- 21:20Speaker 1: the ball but then has to settle for field goals.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Your completion percentage is great, so your success rate might
- 21:25Speaker 1: look good there, but your overall EPA may not be good.
- 21:29Speaker 2: So that exactly makes sense, all right, just trying to
- 21:32Speaker 2: you know, put it together the back way, you know.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, So what do you make of the stack
- 21:37Speaker 1: box and light box percentages?
- 21:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's a little disconcerting that, you know,
- 21:44Speaker 2: I think there was a little bit more you could
- 21:46Speaker 2: say about why the running hasn't been as efficient this
- 21:49Speaker 2: year because they've been facing stacked boxes. But like you
- 21:52Speaker 2: look at it, it was eighteen point five percent stacked
- 21:56Speaker 2: and sixty six point seven percent light, right, and.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Remind everybody what the difference between light and stacked is, please. Yeah.
- 22:03Speaker 2: So it's just about the number of defenders in the box.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I believe it's it's eight or more for stacked, and
- 22:10Speaker 2: then light is six or less.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Right, So that's why these numbers don't equal one hundred
- 22:15Speaker 1: people because there's the seven man box, which is pretty
- 22:17Speaker 1: frequent in common as well, that that is neither stacked
- 22:21Speaker 1: nor light.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Yeah, just the box, Yeah, it just blocks.
- 22:27Speaker 1: The rams against the stack. The rams only saw see that.
- 22:30Speaker 1: That surprised me. The Rams only saw a stack box
- 22:32Speaker 1: on thirteen percent because you know, they ran the ball
- 22:36Speaker 1: so well. In fact, I bet you that number was
- 22:38Speaker 1: lower and then skewed by the second half when Vic
- 22:42Speaker 1: started bringing more defender. He actually started playing a five
- 22:44Speaker 1: man line at times, bringing to hot Campbell down. But
- 22:49Speaker 1: that doesn't necessarily change in numbers. It just changes the
- 22:52Speaker 1: RAMS ability to execute multiple double teams, right yeah. So
- 22:56Speaker 1: if they got five and then a tight end the
- 22:58Speaker 1: blocks that's six and you put six online of scrimmage,
- 23:01Speaker 1: they can still double team one, but then they have
- 23:03Speaker 1: to leave an unblocked defender, you know.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it changes the hat on a hat
- 23:08Speaker 2: analysis for sure.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Right, all right, good stuff, So let's get to the
- 23:11Speaker 1: star of the stat sheet. You I got. I have
- 23:14Speaker 1: a very fun graphic I'm going to put up in
- 23:16Speaker 1: a second here to do a comparison. But AJ Brown's
- 23:20Speaker 1: your man.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I think it's about time he gets up
- 23:24Speaker 2: on this list. You know, honestly, I really could have
- 23:28Speaker 2: went Devoda Smith too. I really could have, But I think,
- 23:32Speaker 2: just from a more meaningful point, I think to put
- 23:37Speaker 2: Aj Brown on here, and the reasons that justify it
- 23:40Speaker 2: ten targets, six receptions one hundred and nine yards, which
- 23:44Speaker 2: is fifth in the league for the week, but eighteen
- 23:47Speaker 2: point two yards per reception, one touchdown. He was plus
- 23:51Speaker 2: eight percent on catch rate over expectation. He was plus
- 23:55Speaker 2: six point three on EPA. He was thirty three yards
- 23:59Speaker 2: after catch plus twenty seven yards after catch over expectation. Wow,
- 24:05Speaker 2: which was third in the league, and one point four
- 24:09Speaker 2: average separation, which was the fourth lowest in the league.
- 24:12Speaker 1: That's incredible. So without much separation, he still made so
- 24:16Speaker 1: much happen after the catch and on the catch. He
- 24:19Speaker 1: willed this game, no doubt, no doubt. So let's take
- 24:23Speaker 1: a look at his route tree. And this is the
- 24:25Speaker 1: fun part, all right. You can see the route tree
- 24:27Speaker 1: right here right everybody. You can see it for those
- 24:30Speaker 1: who are just listening. On the right side when he
- 24:34Speaker 1: lined up, I mean, he's got at least one, two
- 24:38Speaker 1: three on the right side and about two or three
- 24:41Speaker 1: more on left side that are ten to thirty yard routes, okay,
- 24:44Speaker 1: including a forty yard route, So he was sent deeper
- 24:49Speaker 1: in this game. And just to have some fun, Sam,
- 24:53Speaker 1: let's go look at his last week rout chart. This
- 24:57Speaker 1: is aj Brown's route tree from Week two against the
- 25:00Speaker 1: Chiefs pretty different.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Huh, very different.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I meant more different.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Yeah, you really don't. And that's honestly, that's what people
- 25:10Speaker 2: were asking for, right, I mean, that's they unleashed a J. Brown,
- 25:14Speaker 2: which is what they needed to do, and that's what
- 25:16Speaker 2: helped contribute to win the game from an offensive perspective.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Absolutely, just what a glaring difference. A glaring differ. Yeah,
- 25:24Speaker 1: I felt like I had to now you said DeVante
- 25:26Speaker 1: Smith could also have been one of your guys, your stars.
- 25:31Speaker 1: The statuet what number? I mean? I think this the
- 25:34Speaker 1: catch right over expectation really jumps out.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, but that that's Devanta Smith, right, He
- 25:38Speaker 2: makes the impossible catches possible. That that is his That's
- 25:43Speaker 2: the bread and butter, right, I mean he will his
- 25:46Speaker 2: best stat will, probably at the end of his career,
- 25:49Speaker 2: will be that catch right over expect Yeah.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Plus point eight by the way, for those listening, plus
- 25:55Speaker 1: eighteen point eight catch right over expectation and an eight
- 25:59Speaker 1: point zero EPA. So this was fifth among all wide
- 26:02Speaker 1: receivers in the NFL that week.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Correct, Wow? Yeah, because he made plays at critical times
- 26:10Speaker 2: that put the Eagles in position to score points, which
- 26:12Speaker 2: is honestly, there was such a justification to put to
- 26:15Speaker 2: Vada Smith here too. I probably could have done a
- 26:18Speaker 2: co star of the statuet for both of those guys.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, he caught a really nice pass on
- 26:22Speaker 1: and this was really more Jillen Hurts making a great
- 26:24Speaker 1: throw and a great progressionary. It was a backside deep
- 26:28Speaker 1: dig on third and ten and it was went for
- 26:30Speaker 1: sixteen yards and the protection was unbelievable. But you know,
- 26:33Speaker 1: for Hurts to get in there and DeVante to find
- 26:36Speaker 1: that opening and the zone was really good. Yeah, all right,
- 26:40Speaker 1: some notes on the offense go ahead.
- 26:44Speaker 2: After gaining just thirty three yards in the first half,
- 26:46Speaker 2: their fewest to start a game in over a decade,
- 26:49Speaker 2: the Eagles gained two hundred and fifty five yards in
- 26:52Speaker 2: the second half and scored twenty six unanswered to come
- 26:55Speaker 2: back and win the game. This nineteen point deficit was
- 26:59Speaker 2: the largest comeback since the Miracle at the Meadowlands Part two.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I was there in the press box. That was incredible. Now,
- 27:09Speaker 1: is that the game also where they had fewer or
- 27:13Speaker 1: thirty three yards in the first half or fewer or
- 27:15Speaker 1: was there a different game?
- 27:16Speaker 2: I am unsure about that hoky.
- 27:18Speaker 1: I didn't know if they were making the connection there.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think that, so, but don't quote me
- 27:24Speaker 2: on that. I got this this blurb from next Gen,
- 27:27Speaker 2: which is kind of fun. I love when they do these.
- 27:29Speaker 2: I'm always going to throw them in.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, so gohead.
- 27:34Speaker 2: I was gonna say the other There's a couple other
- 27:36Speaker 2: points I have on there, But if you want to
- 27:38Speaker 2: talk a little bit about what you were going to
- 27:39Speaker 2: say first, it's up to you.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I was actually going to get into that specifically, the
- 27:43Speaker 1: no huddle one.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Yeah, in the first half Eagles had one no huddle play,
- 27:48Speaker 2: but in the second half they went no huddle on
- 27:50Speaker 2: fifty three point seven percent of their place.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Wow, that's a big difference. Now, I don't want to
- 27:55Speaker 1: put krt before the horse with this this footnote here,
- 27:59Speaker 1: because I've heard already people say why didn't they go
- 28:01Speaker 1: more no huddle? Why didn't they go more no huddle
- 28:03Speaker 1: in the first half. I mean, from a football standpoint,
- 28:06Speaker 1: a tactical standpoint, you can't go no huddle if you're
- 28:09Speaker 1: constantly behind the sticks. You know you're not going no
- 28:12Speaker 1: huddle on thirty and fifteen, So you can hand the
- 28:13Speaker 1: ball off to Saquon Barkley and get your punter more space,
- 28:15Speaker 1: which they had to do twice, right the three.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Now all the fans, yeah.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Yeah, they're there, they're whatever. I would imagine. Their EPA
- 28:24Speaker 1: on first down for the first two quarters was awful.
- 28:28Speaker 1: So they were constantly behind the sticks. They were constantly
- 28:30Speaker 1: throwing swing passes to Barkley for our yard or two.
- 28:33Speaker 1: They were trying to run. They couldn't go anywhere. So
- 28:36Speaker 1: you know, you're not gonna get a Saquon Barkley two
- 28:38Speaker 1: yard run second and eight and then go no huddle.
- 28:40Speaker 1: It's an't just doesn't make sense. You got it. You're
- 28:43Speaker 1: not hurting the defense at that point.
- 28:45Speaker 2: And so here's the other problem with that, right, we
- 28:47Speaker 2: talked about the Eagles brand of football is that they
- 28:50Speaker 2: want to dominate by running the clock and by maintaining possession.
- 28:54Speaker 2: It's hard to do that when you're in no huddle. Right, So,
- 28:59Speaker 2: I think having it as a situational weapon is great.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Now should it should it always be the case? Probably not?
- 29:07Speaker 2: But I do think Hurts excels at making adjustments at
- 29:10Speaker 2: the line, and I think when they're going to huddle,
- 29:13Speaker 2: he does a pretty good job at, you know, having
- 29:15Speaker 2: that time to diagnose the defense a little bit more
- 29:17Speaker 2: and making those calls. And I think that's what he's
- 29:20Speaker 2: really good at. However, it's antithetical to what we say
- 29:24Speaker 2: the Eagles football is the formula that they've been trying
- 29:27Speaker 2: to do so right, yeah, all.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Right, now, this is the most fascinating charts of all,
- 29:32Speaker 1: the Jalen Hurts spray chart. And for people who are
- 29:35Speaker 1: just listening, I'll go ahead and explain. There are you know,
- 29:39Speaker 1: green is for completions, whites for incompletions. There are green
- 29:42Speaker 1: dots on this spray chart, just peppered everywhere on the
- 29:47Speaker 1: left side, on the right side, even some in the
- 29:49Speaker 1: middle right, an area where we constantly talk about Jaialen
- 29:52Speaker 1: Hurts not wanting to throw the ball, there are green
- 29:55Speaker 1: dots in the middle. And it really this is what
- 29:58Speaker 1: you would say, Sam is just making use of pretty
- 30:01Speaker 1: much the entire field and really only one deep ball
- 30:04Speaker 1: that's the one out of the A. J. Brown that
- 30:06Speaker 1: I mentioned, But a lot of intermediary passing in this
- 30:10Speaker 1: in this game.
- 30:11Speaker 2: This spray shart makes me happy. I mean it just
- 30:13Speaker 2: it shows Jalen Hurts can make any throw anywhere at
- 30:16Speaker 2: any time, and it's something that we know he's capable of,
- 30:22Speaker 2: we've seen him do, but he really is only going
- 30:25Speaker 2: to do it when he needs to right right, There's
- 30:27Speaker 2: no reason to risk turnovers. And that's that's elite mindset
- 30:31Speaker 2: by Jalen Hurts, and this was a situation where he
- 30:35Speaker 2: needed to make plates. And I think it all comes
- 30:38Speaker 2: back to his quote just because we don't doesn't mean
- 30:40Speaker 2: we can't. And I think this is the epitome of
- 30:42Speaker 2: that situation.
- 30:44Speaker 1: And I also think we we when we have the
- 30:46Speaker 1: conversation about jale Hurts throwing in the middle, it's it's
- 30:49Speaker 1: not that he can't or won't. I think the Eagles
- 30:52Speaker 1: have done a really good job in the past. They
- 30:54Speaker 1: don't do as many RPOs as they used to, but
- 30:57Speaker 1: of creating the the route concept that will get a
- 31:02Speaker 1: guy open, whether it's a mesh concept or a slant
- 31:06Speaker 1: which is a one on one for either Asia or
- 31:07Speaker 1: DeVante that you know they're gonna win and the safety
- 31:10Speaker 1: is taken out like that. He's not. None of these throws,
- 31:12Speaker 1: I believe were real tight window throws. We know that
- 31:15Speaker 1: he doesn't like to make those. Most of these were
- 31:18Speaker 1: receiver has a step on the coverage or is inside
- 31:21Speaker 1: the zone and open there, you know, like the Dallas
- 31:23Speaker 1: Gobert one perfect example that wasn't really a tight window.
- 31:26Speaker 1: It was a beautiful throw and the right throat and
- 31:28Speaker 1: the great read. I'm not taking anything away from it,
- 31:30Speaker 1: but the Eagles are good at being able to scheme
- 31:32Speaker 1: up stuff like that where the read is easy, it's there,
- 31:36Speaker 1: the target's there, and Jaleness a very accurate quarterback. I
- 31:38Speaker 1: give him a lot of credit on that.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean Hurts completed seven of his nine
- 31:43Speaker 2: passes over ten yards in the second half for one
- 31:45Speaker 2: hundred and fifty four yards and two touchdowns.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Amazing. You got your attack from the middle and then
- 31:50Speaker 1: you open it up a little bit more. A plus
- 31:52Speaker 1: three point three completion percentage over expectation. I believe he
- 31:56Speaker 1: led the.
- 31:57Speaker 2: NFL in that last year he did.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, do you remember what the number was? Overall?
- 32:01Speaker 1: I don't, Okay, what's typically a good quarterback? Cpoe?
- 32:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, honestly, having it over anything is pretty positive.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, that's what I thought. All right, O line,
- 32:15Speaker 1: We're gonna get to something special on the old line too.
- 32:18Speaker 1: O line has not played great this year. They're dealing
- 32:20Speaker 1: with some things. We know, right, Tackle Olane Johnson only
- 32:24Speaker 1: played what he played what's PBS meaning again past blocking
- 32:29Speaker 1: blocks mat right, so he was only out there for
- 32:31Speaker 1: five before we got hurt. Matt Pryor came in that
- 32:34Speaker 1: did not look good. We know that Lana Dickerson's dealing
- 32:38Speaker 1: with coming back from his knee surgeries and stuff, and
- 32:41Speaker 1: Cam Jurgen's with the back. So it just doesn't look
- 32:44Speaker 1: like the dominant O line that it's been.
- 32:46Speaker 2: No. I one nd percent agree honestly, in both running
- 32:50Speaker 2: and passing. It just it's not what we used to right.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Anything anything jump out to you here. I mean we
- 33:00Speaker 1: know we people saw the game, but from a data
- 33:03Speaker 1: standpoint there.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the only thing that jumps out is
- 33:06Speaker 2: something that we're going to bring up in a minute.
- 33:07Speaker 2: I mean, you look at those pressures. Four of them
- 33:09Speaker 2: came from Lynn Dickerson.
- 33:11Speaker 1: So here it is. This is first of all, I'm
- 33:14Speaker 1: going to give credit to the person, even though you
- 33:16Speaker 1: can't see it on the screen, who put this information out.
- 33:19Speaker 1: His name is Anthony Ryan Hart at ryan Hard NFL
- 33:24Speaker 1: on Twitter at least and probably some other social media
- 33:28Speaker 1: as well. But Sam, what are we looking at here?
- 33:31Speaker 2: Yeah, so you're just going to look at where pressure
- 33:33Speaker 2: has been coming from in the past three weeks, and
- 33:38Speaker 2: there's one really glaring spot and that is right in
- 33:42Speaker 2: front of the left guard.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Yeah, the right defensive tackle pressure rate a ten point
- 33:47Speaker 1: nine percent compared to four point one percent at the
- 33:50Speaker 1: other DT spot. And correct me if I'm wrong, Like
- 33:53Speaker 1: you're expecting to see higher numbers on the edges where
- 33:56Speaker 1: you generate right so differently for the d T to
- 34:00Speaker 1: be at eleven percent and the edges to be at fourteen,
- 34:03Speaker 1: it shouldn't be that that close unless you're facing Aaron
- 34:05Speaker 1: Donald every well, he's retired, but you know what, unless
- 34:08Speaker 1: you're facing every week Jalen Carter or someone of that ILK.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Absolutely yeah, And what's interesting, I also think is the
- 34:19Speaker 2: slot coming from the right defense that I guess the
- 34:23Speaker 2: right tackle side. But essentially they've missed a couple of
- 34:28Speaker 2: corner blitzes. You know they happened I think from the Chiefs.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Yes, I was gonna say, Spags always throws a ton
- 34:36Speaker 1: of slot blitzes and second level blitzer and then I
- 34:39Speaker 1: think I don't know how they There was one sack
- 34:42Speaker 1: against the Rams from Quinton Lake, I think it was,
- 34:45Speaker 1: and he kind of lines up in the slot in
- 34:47Speaker 1: Nickel in safety and he got a few pressures from
- 34:51Speaker 1: Blitzer that way, as did the safety. And it's interesting
- 34:55Speaker 1: they don't have a safety on this chart here, but
- 34:57Speaker 1: as did McCullough, who line up all over their backfield.
- 35:02Speaker 2: My guess for safety, they just included in that linebacker
- 35:05Speaker 2: spot any of those pressures. And honestly, like we like
- 35:10Speaker 2: I said for corner Blitz as we call them cobras
- 35:13Speaker 2: at penn Stee, and they weren't always from the slot
- 35:17Speaker 2: right like they they're coming from the outside a lot
- 35:20Speaker 2: of the time. Right.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Hey, fall is planting season. Did you know that many

- 37:43Speaker 1: and an experience made for Philly fans twenty one and up.
- 37:47Speaker 1: So certainly something to look forward this week, Sam, Because
- 37:52Speaker 1: obviously nobody blitzes from the second level as much as
- 37:55Speaker 1: Todd Bowles does. I mean that's like, as he wakes up,
- 37:57Speaker 1: people probably tired of me hearing as I say this
- 38:00Speaker 1: guy rolls out of bed thinking a second level bletzes,
- 38:02Speaker 1: so they got to watch for that, no doubt. All right.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Another star of the stat sheet on defense, Jordan Davis.
- 38:10Speaker 1: I won't quibble with it because he made huge, huge
- 38:13Speaker 1: plays at the end, but run defense, it would not
- 38:15Speaker 1: be the case. But certainly, although I guess if you
- 38:19Speaker 1: do the whole it's heavily weighted by situational like his
- 38:22Speaker 1: fourth quarter run stops were fantastic.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, he had three defensive stops and
- 38:28Speaker 2: I think one of them was a scramble, which was
- 38:31Speaker 2: the one we talked about, and I think the other
- 38:33Speaker 2: two were in the run game. So I mean, listen,
- 38:36Speaker 2: he made plays when he needed to make plays. Are
- 38:39Speaker 2: you shocked as Jordan Davis? I mean, honestly, no, no, no,
- 38:43Speaker 2: not at all.
- 38:44Speaker 1: I mean it wasn't you know, he had to pick
- 38:46Speaker 1: someone who the defense was not the star of the
- 38:48Speaker 1: show in this game, so he had to pick one
- 38:49Speaker 1: person who kind of came through with some good defense,
- 38:52Speaker 1: and that certainly was Davis in the fourth quarter. And
- 38:54Speaker 1: then of course you add in I guess you can
- 38:56Speaker 1: consider the field goal blocks like defense, even though it's
- 38:58Speaker 1: special teams, because he points off the board like a
- 39:01Speaker 1: defense is supposed to do absolutely.
- 39:03Speaker 2: I mean it could have been balling too, But I
- 39:07Speaker 2: think that Jordan Davis's performance. I mean, let's just talk
- 39:11Speaker 2: about it real quick, right. He had twenty three pass rushes,
- 39:14Speaker 2: one sack, three defensive stops, one game winning field goal block.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Part of two field goal blocks. He was a critical
- 39:21Speaker 2: part of this other one and one touchdown. He reached
- 39:25Speaker 2: my favorite stat, reached the top speed of eighteen point
- 39:28Speaker 2: five to nine miles prowur on their return, the fastest
- 39:31Speaker 2: of a player over three hundred and thirty pounds since
- 39:33Speaker 2: next gen era.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Wow, well that makes sense. He ran the fastest forty
- 39:37Speaker 1: for a guy his size. Right at the combine. I
- 39:40Speaker 1: mean that's where the straight line speed finally came and
- 39:43Speaker 1: helped him out. We always say, who cares what a
- 39:45Speaker 1: defensive lineman can run in straight line speeds? It's meaningless. Well,
- 39:50Speaker 1: for one play of his career, it was not meaningless.
- 39:53Speaker 1: I give you that.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean listen, even.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Though Sam he should have fall he should have taken
- 39:57Speaker 1: a knee or fallen off it. I mean listen. I
- 40:00Speaker 1: got criticized and know YouTube commenters came at me for
- 40:03Speaker 1: saying that. In the postgame show, Nick Sirianni said the
- 40:05Speaker 1: same exact thing, man, if that ever happened again, he
- 40:08Speaker 1: wants Jordan Davis to take a knee.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Sure, I think from the fan perspective, I can see
- 40:15Speaker 2: why they were juiced by this play. Listen, they they're
- 40:19Speaker 2: calling it the Jordan Davis game, like I've heard people
- 40:22Speaker 2: refer to as the which I love. By the way,
- 40:24Speaker 2: it's it's fun, it's it's how you endear yourself to
- 40:27Speaker 2: a city. I mean, it's, to be honest with you,
- 40:29Speaker 2: it's it's such a good chapter in his story, right,
- 40:31Speaker 2: I mean, he came in as like as a top prospect.
- 40:36Speaker 2: He was overweight, he he had some issues with you know, effort,
- 40:40Speaker 2: with endurance, and you come in, he loses the weight,
- 40:44Speaker 2: he does everything he needs to do, and then he
- 40:47Speaker 2: has a play to show it off. I understand why
- 40:51Speaker 2: people are enamored by him and by this play. But
- 40:54Speaker 2: I agree with you from a situational football perspective, you
- 40:57Speaker 2: guarantee a win by taking a knee one hundred percent.
- 41:01Speaker 1: You're right. When you get a game named after you
- 41:04Speaker 1: for a good reason, that's impressive. You know obviously that
- 41:07Speaker 1: we the Sean Jackson, the Miracle, the Meadowlands Averight thinks
- 41:10Speaker 1: about that. People still remember a block field goal against
- 41:12Speaker 1: the San Diego Chargers in two thousand and five. It
- 41:15Speaker 1: was Quentin Michael who blocked it and Matt Ware who
- 41:17Speaker 1: scooped it and returned it for a touchdown to win
- 41:20Speaker 1: the game that was forever known as the field goal
- 41:23Speaker 1: block game until Jordan Davis. Then you have then you
- 41:27Speaker 1: have bad ones, right the Winston Justice Game Sunday Night
- 41:29Speaker 1: Football Giants Eagles and eight sacks from OCU and youurine
- 41:34Speaker 1: justin Tuck because Trey Thomas didn't play. So it's good
- 41:37Speaker 1: that he's It's the Jordan Davis game for a good reason.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and it endears itself defense, especially in this city.
- 41:44Speaker 1: One all right, Eagles d line advanced stats. Now, Nolan
- 41:49Speaker 1: Smith went just went on Ir Sam and that's gonna
- 41:53Speaker 1: be a little bit of a rough deal for the
- 41:55Speaker 1: Eagles for a while until he comes back.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Now I'm interested. Do we know when na Kobe is
- 42:00Speaker 2: supposed to come back?
- 42:01Speaker 1: Well, he's eligible to come back after this game to
- 42:04Speaker 1: practice and get into that twenty one day window. I
- 42:08Speaker 1: have a hard time thinking that he'll be ready in
- 42:12Speaker 1: one week, you know, coming off the injury that he did,
- 42:14Speaker 1: you know, one week of practice and he's often ready
- 42:16Speaker 1: to go. And then the problem for the Eagles is
- 42:19Speaker 1: A that game is against the Broncos, tough game, and
- 42:21Speaker 1: b they have a short turnaround for their Thursday night
- 42:25Speaker 1: game against the Giants. Sure, so if he makes it
- 42:30Speaker 1: back for the for the Giants game, I'd be a
- 42:32Speaker 1: little surprised.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're probably wondering, why are you asking about
- 42:36Speaker 2: an off ball linebacker.
- 42:38Speaker 1: No, I know exactly why you're asking.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Well, I think you move Campbell down. I think you can.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you can, but he's playing so well
- 42:46Speaker 1: at that position. I don't know that you need to.
- 42:48Speaker 1: I mean I think Zarias Smith, sure, Jelex Hunt and
- 42:52Speaker 1: josh Ucha and you probably can activate ojil Ai. Now,
- 42:55Speaker 1: just to give yourself a little more depth, I think
- 42:57Speaker 1: you got to see how that works out first. You
- 42:59Speaker 1: certainly you can use Campbell in a game situationally that way.
- 43:02Speaker 2: That's that's more of what I was thinking, is situational
- 43:05Speaker 2: you know, pass rushing. I mean, he's already done some
- 43:07Speaker 2: pass rushing, but just from you know the edge.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, what jumped out of you from the d
- 43:13Speaker 1: Lin's performance against the rams here from an analytics.
- 43:15Speaker 2: Standpoint, Yeah, I mean it's really Zadarius Smith, right, I
- 43:18Speaker 2: mean that win rate of thirty three point three percent
- 43:22Speaker 2: and the get off of zero point nine to four. Honestly,
- 43:24Speaker 2: the get off was pretty solid for everyone except really
- 43:27Speaker 2: Nolan Smith. I mean, you really won it at one second.
- 43:31Speaker 2: But I mean, listen, he did pretty well. He got
- 43:34Speaker 2: three pressures. But I think those Zadarius Smith wins, I
- 43:38Speaker 2: think they're going if they keep happening, it's going to
- 43:40Speaker 2: turn into pressure sooner rather than later.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Right, because this pass rush per pressure rate is a
- 43:46Speaker 1: little is not as high as his win rate, right, Right,
- 43:49Speaker 1: it doesn't coincide because it's the lower the number on
- 43:51Speaker 1: that is better.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Correct.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Yeah, you got a pass rush. He got a pass
- 43:55Speaker 1: rush once every fourteen pressures, exactly. Yeah.
- 43:59Speaker 2: I do think if he wins at that rate or
- 44:02Speaker 2: even close to that rate, right, Like, even if it
- 44:04Speaker 2: reduces in half, I think it's going to turn into pressures.
- 44:07Speaker 2: You just gotta be patient with it. Yeah, I'm pretty
- 44:10Speaker 2: optimistic about Smith. I'm still very optimistic about and I
- 44:15Speaker 2: mean Hunt was one of the best edge out there.
- 44:19Speaker 2: I mean he had a twenty percent win rate and
- 44:21Speaker 2: he had a pressure every six point three three snaps.
- 44:23Speaker 2: So yep, you feel pretty solid with what you have
- 44:26Speaker 2: as long as it can keep maintaining it or you know,
- 44:30Speaker 2: improve Yeah.
- 44:31Speaker 1: And I think zadarias Smith is the one who sees
- 44:33Speaker 1: the optic in reps here. But again with that heat,
- 44:36Speaker 1: they have to may have to rotate a little bit.
- 44:38Speaker 1: You may want to either Ocuranquo or Ojelari also active
- 44:43Speaker 1: Patrick Johnson, somebody to give you some snaps there in
- 44:45Speaker 1: case you need get kiss guys cramping up or just
- 44:48Speaker 1: needing to come to the sideline.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think you're right. I think that's exactly
- 44:51Speaker 2: what we're going to see in the next game. I
- 44:53Speaker 2: think the chart for our review of next week will
- 44:56Speaker 2: be a little bit bigger because there will be more
- 44:58Speaker 2: bodies for sure, all.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Right, And I love that you point out here elite
- 45:02Speaker 1: win rate is twenty percent, so Jay ex hunt was
- 45:05Speaker 1: did a really nice job. And then obviously there is
- 45:08Speaker 1: Smith a thirty percent, very very good. And I would
- 45:11Speaker 1: say Nolan Smith at sixteen point seven not terrible.
- 45:14Speaker 2: It's not like he oh it's good, it's good, it's right,
- 45:17Speaker 2: it's it's probably in that right before elite category. It's good.
- 45:22Speaker 1: And Uce really did not have it. I mean he
- 45:24Speaker 1: didn't do anything, especially had one hurry on ten pass rushes.
- 45:27Speaker 1: So yeah, it's not a particularly good game for him.
- 45:30Speaker 2: But his get off was good, right, I mean, listen,
- 45:33Speaker 2: he's getting there quickly. He's just not winning, right.
- 45:36Speaker 1: I don't know what that says, Like, does I mean
- 45:38Speaker 1: the lineman recovers faster? Who knows?
- 45:41Speaker 2: I mean it could be a variety of factors that
- 45:44Speaker 2: contribute to it, for sure.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Got it all right? And then this is the interior
- 45:49Speaker 1: defensive line not And again this is where I pointed
- 45:52Speaker 1: out there was just not a lot of great play
- 45:54Speaker 1: on the interior line, especially against the run, but also
- 45:57Speaker 1: even in the pass rush, although I guess Jaylen Carter
- 46:01Speaker 1: with his one one hurry and two hits stands out.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and his win rate was in that elite category,
- 46:08Speaker 2: but his run defense was not pretty great. Yeah, yeah,
- 46:12Speaker 2: it was not great. I mean, watching the film with it,
- 46:15Speaker 2: it's like, all right, you're gonna need to figure that out.
- 46:18Speaker 2: I'm worried that he's just like he needs to get
- 46:21Speaker 2: in better shape too.
- 46:22Speaker 1: Like, well, listen, you're right, Vic s edit. Vic said
- 46:24Speaker 1: after the after it, well he didn't play in the
- 46:26Speaker 1: Cowboys game because he got ejected, and then he played
- 46:28Speaker 1: in the Chiefs game and Vic said he's gotta get
- 46:31Speaker 1: in better shape. You're one hundred percent right, and he
- 46:34Speaker 1: was what really jumps out, And people can read my
- 46:37Speaker 1: story on Philly Voice because I used all Tony two clips.
- 46:39Speaker 1: He got moved, He got moved by single blocks, he
- 46:42Speaker 1: got moved by combo blocks, and in some cases he
- 46:45Speaker 1: got moved way off the ball, which is not something
- 46:48Speaker 1: you're expecting to see. You gotta beat. You have to
- 46:50Speaker 1: at least stalemate double teams and hold your ground so
- 46:53Speaker 1: those linebackers can come in and fill the gaps. And
- 46:56Speaker 1: a lot of times those linebackers were just already taken
- 46:59Speaker 1: out of the play because Carter was moved in the
- 47:01Speaker 1: lineman offensive line. We're getting up to the second level.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, listen, it's not going to be better
- 47:07Speaker 2: in the heat too. Yeah. Yeah, we don't have to
- 47:12Speaker 2: see what happens, all right, Miss Milton Williams A little
- 47:15Speaker 2: bit right.
- 47:17Speaker 1: It does feel like, I mean, Jordan Davis has played well,
- 47:19Speaker 1: but you're right, not at the level consistently with the
- 47:22Speaker 1: pass rush and the run stop that Milton Williams played
- 47:25Speaker 1: at last year, So what is you You have Davis
- 47:29Speaker 1: on a gold line here. The gold line is supposed
- 47:31Speaker 1: to symbolize what.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Just because he was the star of the statuet. I
- 47:35Speaker 2: figured I did it with Lane last week when we
- 47:38Speaker 2: were talking about just you know, from an offensive perspective,
- 47:41Speaker 2: so I figured I'd be consistent here and give our
- 47:44Speaker 2: star a little credit.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Awesome, I love it. Let's go to the secondary. Really
- 47:49Speaker 1: interesting stuff you have because Quinya Mitchell again, like week one,
- 47:52Speaker 1: was a shadower on DeVante. Adams, who is typically a
- 47:56Speaker 1: static receiver lines up at the X, but Davante moved
- 47:59Speaker 1: around little bit because the Rams do a lot of
- 48:01Speaker 1: motion and Mitchell did have to fly. I did see
- 48:04Speaker 1: a snap or two of Mitchell in the slot against DeVante.
- 48:09Speaker 2: HM that that is interesting. I mean, they their game plan,
- 48:14Speaker 2: especially with their injuries at corner that they're going to
- 48:16Speaker 2: be dealing with, is subject to change, right, I mean,
- 48:19Speaker 2: Ja Cory and Bennett going on IR, Dori Jackson dealing
- 48:22Speaker 2: with I believe it was a knee injury. Yeah no,
- 48:25Speaker 2: uh yeah yeah, but he's not on IR. But look,
- 48:29Speaker 2: they're they're dealing with some some injuries in the secondary.
- 48:32Speaker 2: So it'll be interesting to see if they will continue
- 48:34Speaker 2: to shadow the primary receiver. They're going to stick with
- 48:37Speaker 2: what they did last year, especially because Mike Evans is
- 48:41Speaker 2: out next week. You know, I don't think I don't
- 48:44Speaker 2: think Godwin's clear to come back yet he might He
- 48:47Speaker 2: actually might, Oh he might, Okay.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Talking about him being able to play, Yeah.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Okay, well either way and meccabuka is going to be trouble.
- 48:55Speaker 2: So it'll be interesting to see how they deal with
- 48:57Speaker 2: that situation.
- 48:59Speaker 1: And even though Mitchell shadowed Pickens in the opener, this
- 49:03Speaker 1: was the first game as you note that he shadowed
- 49:05Speaker 1: a receiver on more than sixty percent of that receiver's routes.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Yeah, he did it for seventy nine point four percent
- 49:11Speaker 2: of Donte Adam's route and you know, he matched up
- 49:15Speaker 2: in coverage on twenty two routes, allowing just two receptions
- 49:19Speaker 2: for twelve yards and five targets. His only other reception
- 49:22Speaker 2: was the forty four yard touchdown against Reed.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Oh interesting, okay, right, and that was really set up
- 49:28Speaker 1: by motion that made him the number two instead of
- 49:30Speaker 1: the number one, which is what McVeigh does really well. Yeah,
- 49:35Speaker 1: So ultimately, as you wrote right. Six targets against Mitchell,
- 49:38Speaker 1: three receptions twenty yards a QBR fifty seven point six.
- 49:41Speaker 1: That's a pretty good job.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he did a great job, all right.
- 49:45Speaker 1: And finishing it off. So Zach Bond led the team
- 49:47Speaker 1: and covered GPA minus six point nine.
- 49:50Speaker 2: That's pretty where most of that comes from. Most of
- 49:52Speaker 2: those points come from.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Is I was going to be going to point that out.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Suber Dean led the team in tackles with nine Campbell
- 49:59Speaker 1: eight Bond s. I will say this stat may be
- 50:02Speaker 1: a little bit more misleading because some of those tackles
- 50:04Speaker 1: came five to seven yards down the field in run,
- 50:07Speaker 1: but still, I think in general, so one one thing
- 50:11Speaker 1: I did notice is that the Rams funneled a lot
- 50:13Speaker 1: of their when they did run an occasional outside zone
- 50:16Speaker 1: or even if they were in inside zone but used motion,
- 50:19Speaker 1: they ran toward the nickel, which I'm not I don't
- 50:23Speaker 1: think that they ran toward the nickel thinking Degene is
- 50:25Speaker 1: some weakness because he's he's good, but you have to
- 50:27Speaker 1: pick your poison. You would you rather run toward the
- 50:30Speaker 1: nickel or run toward the strong side linebacker and run
- 50:33Speaker 1: toward Bond. That's that's that's your poison that you have
- 50:36Speaker 1: to pick.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think you choose the you know, smaller body.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Not that Koop isn't small at all, but right, smaller
- 50:43Speaker 2: than Bond.
- 50:43Speaker 1: So no, and they got a guy, well, they have
- 50:46Speaker 1: two guys, Whittington their receiver eighty nine eighty eight and
- 50:49Speaker 1: Higbe eighty nine their tight end, who I thought did
- 50:51Speaker 1: a really good job as blockers. They would go in motion,
- 50:55Speaker 1: get their get their you know, momentum going, and they
- 50:59Speaker 1: did good job. The Rams Rams run, that's their bread
- 51:02Speaker 1: and butter. They do an excellent job of it. But
- 51:06Speaker 1: I think their physicality gave the Egles a little bit
- 51:10Speaker 1: more than I expected, because Eagles are some physical players
- 51:13Speaker 1: on defense. But there were some times where guys, not
- 51:17Speaker 1: just Carter and Davis, but even in the second level
- 51:19Speaker 1: got moved.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I one hundred percent agree with you. And and
- 51:23Speaker 2: look there's there's stuff that they're gonna have to work
- 51:25Speaker 2: on for sure.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Absolutely, Sam. Another great breakdown is always look forward to
- 51:30Speaker 1: doing it next week after the Eagles play the Bucks.
- 51:32Speaker 1: And uh, we'll get into that when we do. And
- 51:35Speaker 1: I'm good, all right, So thank you for all your
- 51:37Speaker 1: hard work, all the great crafts, and for Sam Finkel,
- 51:40Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher. You've been watching inside the data on
- 51:43Speaker 1: inside the birds
