- 0:00Facing the difficulties and obstacles presented by the
- 0:04external world to our ego personality, we frequently
- 0:08become disturbed and react with anger, frustration or some other
- 0:14indication of a lack of peace. We tend to become the reaction
- 0:20someone cuts in front of us on the road and we become angry, in
- 0:24some cases expressing ourselves through what is known as road
- 0:28rage or at least mentally engaging in some type of upset
- 0:32reaction. If we reflect on our daily
- 0:35reactions, we can easily identify situations where
- 0:39someone has angered us, someone has insulted us, where things
- 0:43occur that distress us, where we have relationship, financial or
- 0:48other setbacks, where flights get cancelled, where we get
- 0:53delayed for a meeting, etcetera. Each of these situations creates
- 0:58ripples in the mind stuff and the nerve channels.
- 1:02These ripples disrupt our ability to perceive and channel
- 1:07the higher energies with light, clarity and serenity.
- 1:12For the spiritual seeker, therefore, it becomes even more
- 1:15essential to be able to separate oneself from the external
- 1:20personality and its reactions and maintain calm, peace and a
- 1:25serene receptivity to the spiritual forces that are the
- 1:29focus of the aspiration. Practitioners of the Integral
- 1:35Yoga who aspire to transform life rather than escape from
- 1:39life are faced with the practical need to stay securely
- 1:43in a spiritual consciousness while engaging the external
- 1:48being in the actions of the body, life and mind in the
- 1:52external world. When the seeker slips into an
- 1:55external consciousness, he is subject to all the disturbances
- 2:00that take place in that arena. If he is fixed in the uninvolved
- 2:05witness consciousness, he can observe the play of nature
- 2:09without being upset, depressed or discouraged.
- 2:15The best way to develop the serenity, actually, is to face
- 2:18the situations and observe and modify the reactions.
- 2:23Withdrawing to The Cave, the forest, the monastery, the
- 2:27desert, the mountains, or going on retreats may be useful for a
- 2:33short time to tune the being to the peace and serenity needed.
- 2:38But over the longer perspective, the opportunity to remain calm
- 2:42in the midst of pressures represents the best way to
- 2:46measure 1's progress, Shiorobindo observes.
- 2:51Quote. There can be no firm foundation
- 2:54in sadhna without equality. Samita.
- 2:58Whatever the unpleasantness of circumstances, however
- 3:02disagreeable the conduct of others, you must learn to
- 3:06receive them with a perfect calm and without any disturbing
- 3:10reaction. These things are the test of
- 3:13equality. It is easy to be calm and equal
- 3:17when things go well and people and circumstances are pleasant.
- 3:21It is when they are the opposite that the completeness of the
- 3:25calm, peace, equality can be tested, reinforced, made
- 3:31perfect. End Quote Reference Srioro Bindo
