- 0:03Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back ESPN insider Jeff Passing on the show. Jeff,
- 0:07Speaker 1: it's good to see you and love catching your show.
- 0:09Speaker 1: The new one sources tell Jeff Passing on ESPNSMLB YouTube channel.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Wherever you get your pods.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Also always reading what you got Jeff, which was something
- 0:17Speaker 1: fresh this morning. One hundred names that are all going
- 0:19Speaker 1: to get traded at the deadline?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Wow, that's a lot.
- 0:21Speaker 1: How you doing and I want to go through them.
- 0:25Speaker 3: I really hope one hundred guys don't get traded to
- 0:28Speaker 3: the deadline like last deadline was wild enough, Like the
- 0:31Speaker 3: Minnesota Twins had a deadline for everyone last time around,
- 0:36Speaker 3: and you know what, they may actually be one of
- 0:39Speaker 3: the busier teams of this time around too.
- 0:40Speaker 2: So it's such an interesting time.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Guys, because we just have no idea right now what
- 0:46Speaker 3: the landscape is going to look like in a month.
- 0:49Speaker 3: And I think we're going to have a better sense
- 0:51Speaker 3: after the All Star break as to who actually is
- 0:55Speaker 3: going to be moving and who's not, but there might
- 0:58Speaker 3: be some decisions that don't have and until even the
- 1:01Speaker 3: week before the August theyird deadline.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So fun times in baseball right now, Ah.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Jeff, I'll start right with the team major team you
- 1:09Speaker 4: brought up, the Twins, Byron Buckston. I think he was
- 1:11Speaker 4: two on your list, right. Byron Buckson says he doesn't
- 1:14Speaker 4: want to go anywhere. Will he actually wave.
- 1:15Speaker 3: His no trade?
- 1:16Speaker 4: And then you go down to like Joe, Ryan, and
- 1:18Speaker 4: there's some other names on this Twins team that could
- 1:21Speaker 4: be valuable to other teams.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Will they do this again?
- 1:26Speaker 3: That's one of the burning questions, Aja, And I think
- 1:29Speaker 3: Ryan Jeffers is another.
- 1:30Speaker 2: One who you didn't mention.
- 1:31Speaker 3: He's gonna be coming back from an injury and the
- 1:33Speaker 3: expectation is he's going to be the best catcher out
- 1:36Speaker 3: there as well. So I think when it comes down
- 1:39Speaker 3: to it with Byron bucks And, it's going to be
- 1:40Speaker 3: a simple question how much do the Twins want to
- 1:44Speaker 3: tear down? And if they do, is that going to
- 1:48Speaker 3: prompt him to say, I'm thirty two years old, I
- 1:52Speaker 3: haven't won a championship yet. The Philadelphia Phillies would really
- 1:55Speaker 3: want me, The Atlanta Braves might want to bring me home.
- 1:59Speaker 3: They're opportunity unities to go to teams that have a
- 2:02Speaker 3: chance to win the World Series this year. Is that
- 2:04Speaker 3: something that's important to me at this phase? In my
- 2:07Speaker 3: career and in my life. And look, if Byron Buckston
- 2:11Speaker 3: wants to stick around in Minnesota and b Joe Mauer,
- 2:16Speaker 3: I have nothing bad to say about that. I love
- 2:18Speaker 3: the idea of somebody spending an entire career with the
- 2:22Speaker 3: same team.
- 2:23Speaker 2: But if, on the other.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Hand, he says, you know what, I'm done with this
- 2:27Speaker 3: last year was enough. It doesn't feel like there's a
- 2:30Speaker 3: light at the end of the tunnel at this point,
- 2:32Speaker 3: and maybe mutually agreed upon separation would be best for
- 2:37Speaker 3: all parties.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I couldn't see him moving now.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I think we we put a percentile likelihood of trade
- 2:44Speaker 3: for all of the players there, and I think we
- 2:46Speaker 3: put Byron Buckston somewhere in like the fifteen to twenty
- 2:49Speaker 3: five percent territory. I don't see him being dealt because
- 2:53Speaker 3: until he indicates that there's even some kind of possibility
- 2:57Speaker 3: that he would be open to a deal, it's moved.
- 3:00Speaker 3: But once that happens, teams are gonna be crawling all
- 3:04Speaker 3: over each other to try and get him, because he
- 3:06Speaker 3: is an impact player at an impact position.
- 3:10Speaker 5: You had him at thirty percent, but I need to
- 3:12Speaker 5: go to the guys who are at eighty five percent
- 3:15Speaker 5: Terrek Schoogle slam dunk trade gotta be traded unless.
- 3:22Speaker 3: What unless the Detroit Tigers sometime between now and the
- 3:27Speaker 3: All Star Break rip off an eight plus game winning streak.
- 3:31Speaker 2: That to me is what it's gonna take to get
- 3:33Speaker 2: them back into things.
- 3:34Speaker 3: And look, I understand guys in the American League, like
- 3:39Speaker 3: all bets are off, we have no idea who's gonna
- 3:43Speaker 3: be in the postseason this year. That's exciting and that's good,
- 3:46Speaker 3: and that's fun. I wish the records were a little
- 3:48Speaker 3: bit better. But beyond the New York Yankees, Like, who's
- 3:51Speaker 3: gonna win the American League Central? Is it Cleveland? Is
- 3:53Speaker 3: it the White Sox? Who's gonna win the American League West?
- 3:56Speaker 2: Is it the Mariners? Is it the A's?
- 3:58Speaker 3: How much do the A's want to push and how
- 4:01Speaker 3: much do they want to go out and get a
- 4:02Speaker 3: starting pitcher? How much did the Chicago White Sox need
- 4:05Speaker 3: to go out and get a starting pitcher? And would
- 4:07Speaker 3: it be somebody more like say Redebtmers who has multiple
- 4:11Speaker 3: years of control as opposed to a rental for this season?
- 4:15Speaker 3: The calculus for all of these things, Eric, it's just
- 4:19Speaker 3: ever evolving, And what It's what makes this trade deadline
- 4:22Speaker 3: so fascinating to me, that we just don't know a
- 4:25Speaker 3: whole lot right now, and until that information is a
- 4:28Speaker 3: lot more solidified, this is all really just speculation.
- 4:33Speaker 4: The White Sox are gonna win that division. Jeff, thank
- 4:34Speaker 4: you question that.
- 4:38Speaker 2: We can we talk about the White Sox for a second.
- 4:41Speaker 5: I would love to talk about the White Sox, dude.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I love watching that team. I think they are so
- 4:47Speaker 3: much fun and they just have an energy about them.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And you know, in a time in baseball.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Right now where we try to quantify everything, the unquantifiable
- 5:00Speaker 3: energy of a team, I think is a very real
- 5:03Speaker 3: thing and something that we don't give enough credit because
- 5:05Speaker 3: we're so used to the idea that we can say
- 5:08Speaker 3: specifically down.
- 5:09Speaker 2: To, you know, the tenth of what a guy is worth.
- 5:15Speaker 3: I'm sorry, but I look at a team that's young,
- 5:18Speaker 3: that gets along, that likes each other, that came up together,
- 5:21Speaker 3: that lost together, and now they're taking those lessons in
- 5:26Speaker 3: turning them into wins. And I think the White Sox
- 5:29Speaker 3: front office has done a magnificent job, not just in
- 5:32Speaker 3: signing them to Tako more Comic, but in bringing Anthony
- 5:34Speaker 3: k back from Japan and Anthony K's throwing ninety eight
- 5:37Speaker 3: mile an hour sinkers now and looking at Grant Taylor
- 5:42Speaker 3: and saying, you know what, he's going to be best
- 5:44Speaker 3: out of the bullpen. His stuff is going to play
- 5:46Speaker 3: like an elite reliever there. And that's exactly what it's
- 5:49Speaker 3: done in fixing Miguel Vargas in identifying Sam Anthonachi a
- 5:54Speaker 3: Juco kid who spent a year at Coastal Carolina and
- 5:57Speaker 3: isn't going to hit a lot of home runs, but
- 5:58Speaker 3: it's just a freaking ballplayer. I like so much about
- 6:03Speaker 3: the White Sox right now, and I think the one
- 6:06Speaker 3: thing they need to caution against is pushing too quickly.
- 6:10Speaker 3: You know. It takes some time, I think, to understand
- 6:14Speaker 3: not just what it's like to win, but what it's
- 6:17Speaker 3: like to win in the postseason. That's a completely different beast.
- 6:20Speaker 3: And if that's a priority to introduce that to this
- 6:24Speaker 3: team right now, then hey, go for it. But I
- 6:27Speaker 3: think the White Sox have a chance to build something
- 6:29Speaker 3: really sustainable, and you don't want the excitement of this
- 6:33Speaker 3: year to overwhelm the long term plan.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Support for today's episode comes from Square, and they've got
- 6:40Speaker 1: big news during Squar's biannual Releases event. They launched a
- 6:43Speaker 1: wave of innovative new tools to help local businesses.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Run faster, smarter, and more profitably.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Square is awesome. Around to Orlando, where AJ and I live,
- 6:52Speaker 1: we go to the farmer's markets around town. I go
- 6:54Speaker 1: to the one near Lake Iola. It's awesome. I use
- 6:56Speaker 1: Square to pay with my phone. I get the receipt
- 6:59Speaker 1: right away.
- 6:59Speaker 2: It's great.
- 7:00Speaker 4: And so many businesses, not just small businesses, uses. So
- 7:02Speaker 4: many restaurants and businesses I walk into, not only in Orlando,
- 7:05Speaker 4: but all over the country have these and you just
- 7:09Speaker 4: use your credit card, pops out, or receipt emails it
- 7:12Speaker 4: right too.
- 7:12Speaker 3: You.
- 7:12Speaker 4: It's so fast, it's so efficient, it's so hassle free.
- 7:15Speaker 4: It's one of the great things that you have going.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Square launched its most powerful tools yet, designed to give
- 7:20Speaker 1: local businesses a competitive edge without the complexity. If you're
- 7:23Speaker 1: ready to sell smarter, run faster, and stress less right now,
- 7:26Speaker 1: you can get up to two hundred dollars off Square
- 7:28Speaker 1: hardware at Square dot com slash go slash foul. That's
- 7:31Speaker 1: Square dot com slash Go, slash foul. Run your business
- 7:35Speaker 1: smarter with Square. Get started today.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Yeah, but if you trade one or two guys, Jeff,
- 7:40Speaker 4: it's worth it. If it's worth it, if you can
- 7:41Speaker 4: trade one or two guys and get some pieces, it's
- 7:44Speaker 4: worth it to go to the postseason and make and
- 7:46Speaker 4: have a chance to make a run, because, like you mentioned,
- 7:48Speaker 4: in the American League, it's open. It's wide open.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I'm sorry, sure is.
- 7:52Speaker 4: So that's that's the only thing that I want to
- 7:55Speaker 4: say about this. The next time, when someone asked you
- 7:56Speaker 4: that question, who's going to win the Central your answer Isardians,
- 8:00Speaker 4: the Cleveland Guardians. That is such crawd Just because just
- 8:05Speaker 4: because Crafts said that to you, I want to go
- 8:07Speaker 4: into some completely different though. Even though I'll saity you
- 8:10Speaker 4: here in talk White Sox all day. I was at
- 8:12Speaker 4: the game on Sunday against the Dodgers. It was unbelievable.
- 8:14Speaker 4: So the name that pops up that you have a
- 8:16Speaker 4: tenth on this list is Sandy al Contra. We've been
- 8:21Speaker 4: hearing for like four years, the Marlins are gonna trade them,
- 8:24Speaker 4: The Marlins are gonna trade them. Now the Marlins aren't
- 8:26Speaker 4: gonna trade them because he got hurt and they had
- 8:27Speaker 4: to see and now everyone's saying, oh, they're gonna finally
- 8:31Speaker 4: trade him. Are they really gonna finally trade Sandy?
- 8:36Speaker 2: I think this with the Marlins is a perfect example
- 8:38Speaker 2: of the standings dictating things and and the Marlins are
- 8:42Speaker 2: a very patient organization AJ and I think they understand
- 8:45Speaker 2: that in the landscape of the National League, it's a
- 8:48Speaker 2: little bit different than the American League. You've got the Dodgers,
- 8:51Speaker 2: You've got the Braves, You've got.
- 8:52Speaker 3: The Phillies playing like a team that looks like it
- 8:55Speaker 3: could be a World Series contender. And among all of those,
- 9:00Speaker 3: what you have are great pitching staffs. The Dodgers top
- 9:03Speaker 3: to bottom. The Brave's bullpen is unbelievable. And I don't
- 9:06Speaker 3: think you know, San Diego gets a lot of the love.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I don't think people recognize how great with Rose ell
- 9:10Speaker 3: Iglesias and Robert Suarez and Dylan Lee and we can
- 9:14Speaker 3: go on and on about how good you know, Didy
- 9:16Speaker 3: or Flintes Like the Braves bullpen this year has been tremendous.
- 9:19Speaker 3: And then the Phillies. When you have Zach Wheeler pitching
- 9:22Speaker 3: the way that he's pitching, when you have Christopher Sanchez,
- 9:26Speaker 3: you know, being sinker god that he is, and then
- 9:29Speaker 3: you throw in you know all the rest of the
- 9:32Speaker 3: arms that they've got their Jesus Lazardo Aaron Nola. Like
- 9:35Speaker 3: the Phillies, it can go into any series and just
- 9:39Speaker 3: bully you with their starting rotation. And so if you're
- 9:42Speaker 3: the Marlins, you have to take all of those things
- 9:45Speaker 3: into account. And as well as they've been playing as
- 9:48Speaker 3: impressive as a middle infield as they have with Otto
- 9:51Speaker 3: Lopez and Xavier Edwards, and with the future that looks
- 9:55Speaker 3: very bright, I'm not sure right now is necessarily the
- 9:57Speaker 3: year for the Marlins to push in And if that's
- 10:00Speaker 3: the case, Sandiel Contra after this year has a twenty
- 10:04Speaker 3: one i think million dollar option for next season, but
- 10:07Speaker 3: he's beginning to lose some of that trade value.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Previously it was down because of performance.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Now it's just a question of how much are we
- 10:16Speaker 3: actually going to be getting out of this guy with
- 10:19Speaker 3: only a year and a half control.
- 10:21Speaker 5: What do you see the overarching works in the trade
- 10:25Speaker 5: at the trade deadline being long term pieces the are
- 10:29Speaker 5: traded because you talked about guys with control debt mers,
- 10:32Speaker 5: you talked about how Ol Contra has it or short
- 10:35Speaker 5: term with the possible looming uncertainty of the CBA.
- 10:41Speaker 3: It's such a fascinating topic, Cratzy, because I just don't
- 10:45Speaker 3: know how much teams are going to penalize the idea
- 10:50Speaker 3: that time can be lost in twenty twenty seven, and
- 10:53Speaker 3: I think it's going to be really interesting, quite indicative actually,
- 10:57Speaker 3: when we look at the return for guys who have
- 11:01Speaker 3: control and not control like debt Mars for a couple
- 11:04Speaker 3: of years, or you know, not control for someone like
- 11:07Speaker 3: Matt Shaw who's got another five years after this year,
- 11:10Speaker 3: but control for guys who are going to be free
- 11:12Speaker 3: agents after twenty twenty seven. If teams are paying the
- 11:16Speaker 3: same price this year that they did for similar guys
- 11:19Speaker 3: last year, that suggests to me that clubs believe that
- 11:23Speaker 3: any sort of labor stoppage that happens is not going
- 11:26Speaker 3: to be as catastrophic and as much doom as some
- 11:31Speaker 3: naysayers are predicting right now. So you know, when it
- 11:35Speaker 3: comes to labor guys, I'm always looking for like little signals,
- 11:39Speaker 3: and I don't know how much noise there's going to
- 11:42Speaker 3: be here, but this, to me is one of those
- 11:44Speaker 3: little signals, one of those little points of emphasis worth
- 11:47Speaker 3: looking at to try and interpret and figure out and
- 11:51Speaker 3: read the tea leaves as to where this whole thing's going.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Jeff, nobody knows. Nobody knows where this is going to go.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I like the positive people. Let's say we're not going
- 11:59Speaker 4: to have a labor stoppage. We've had a few of
- 12:01Speaker 4: them on and then we have some naysayers that say
- 12:03Speaker 4: we're going to be out for four years. So nobody knows.
- 12:07Speaker 4: It's one of those great mysteries of the universe, and
- 12:09Speaker 4: nobody understands.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Aja, I can tell you definitively, we're not going to
- 12:12Speaker 3: be missing multiple years.
- 12:14Speaker 2: That's not going to happen.
- 12:15Speaker 3: It doesn't It doesn't behoove anyone. I think worst case
- 12:19Speaker 3: scenario in my head is back in June. Any missed games,
- 12:25Speaker 3: I think is a real problem. I do think there's
- 12:29Speaker 3: going to be lockout on December first. I do think
- 12:31Speaker 3: it's gonna go down the same path that it did
- 12:34Speaker 3: last time, where we're going to get to February and
- 12:36Speaker 3: spring training is.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Going to be closed down and everyone's going to be.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Like, oh, well, probably you should do something about this
- 12:42Speaker 3: and try and figure this out.
- 12:43Speaker 2: But this reminds me so much of nineteen.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Ninety four, and on my show this week, I talked
- 12:50Speaker 3: with Tom Glavin for an hour plus just to remind
- 12:54Speaker 3: everybody of what nineteen ninety four was like. There's so
- 12:57Speaker 3: much institutional knowledge that's been lost in the game.
- 13:00Speaker 2: There's so few people who are still remaining from.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Nineteen ninety four that I think it's worth a history
- 13:06Speaker 3: lesson to understand that when it comes to labor, guys,
- 13:09Speaker 3: the past always repeats itself. And so if there can
- 13:13Speaker 3: be lessons learned to avoid what happened in nineteen ninety four,
- 13:16Speaker 3: that would be best for everyone, because the reality is
- 13:19Speaker 3: all of us all we want is baseball. All we
- 13:22Speaker 3: want is baseball on the field. All we want is
- 13:24Speaker 3: this very healthy game that has had such a wonderful
- 13:28Speaker 3: renaissance in the last half decade.
- 13:30Speaker 2: To continue on on debated agree.
- 13:33Speaker 4: That was my first professional season, Jeff nineteen ninety four,
- 13:36Speaker 4: so I remember it. I was in the Gulf Coast League.
- 13:39Speaker 4: They shut down baseball. I was like, oh we kept.
- 13:41Speaker 4: We finished our season of like sixty games and fort
- 13:43Speaker 4: myers and then I had to go get a job
- 13:46Speaker 4: at a shoe store because I didn't have instructionally la years.
- 13:48Speaker 4: So I really appreciate that, guys.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I learned how to sell what was your signing bonus.
- 13:53Speaker 4: It was like one hundred and fifty thousand, But that
- 13:55Speaker 4: was nineteen ninety four, so that was like I thought
- 13:57Speaker 4: I was rich as all get out, Jeff Man. I
- 13:59Speaker 4: thought I was never gonna need to work again, and
- 14:01Speaker 4: then all of the yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 2: And then and then you're just going down with stinky feet.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Oh, man, I sold the crap out of them shoes. Man,
- 14:08Speaker 4: we worked on commission. I've told this story. If you
- 14:10Speaker 4: had size eleven and we didn't have it. Oh, they
- 14:12Speaker 4: run big or they run small, depending on which size
- 14:15Speaker 4: we had. They were all from Brazil, man, they didn't
- 14:17Speaker 4: they didn't care. They were shipping into relatives, taking them home,
- 14:19Speaker 4: Take them all, kids, take them all.
- 14:21Speaker 3: But but anyways, fantastic today that they're still honest salesman
- 14:25Speaker 3: in this one.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Exactly exactly, Jeff, exactly right exactly. Hey, just you could
- 14:31Speaker 4: call me, you could call me an MLB on You know,
- 14:32Speaker 4: I never know, Jeff, You just never know where it's
- 14:34Speaker 4: gonna come from. Here. Here's so And by the way,
- 14:38Speaker 4: in nineteen ninety five, I was also my first spring
- 14:40Speaker 4: training with the replacement players, So I do remember all
- 14:44Speaker 4: of that, and I remember what it was like I
- 14:46Speaker 4: was never asked to cross the line. But in the
- 14:49Speaker 4: minor league spring training that they had running at the
- 14:51Speaker 4: same time, we had the big league coaches, and we
- 14:53Speaker 4: had those guys like mixing in with us. And you
- 14:56Speaker 4: had like a carpenter, an electrician that played two years
- 15:00Speaker 4: as a college baseball and then you had Tom Kelly
- 15:02Speaker 4: out there screaming at him to work on their pfps
- 15:05Speaker 4: and you're like, wait, what is happening right, and they
- 15:08Speaker 4: were staying with us in the minor league coach. The
- 15:10Speaker 4: whole thing was surreal.
- 15:11Speaker 2: But that's like a movie.
- 15:12Speaker 3: It was.
- 15:12Speaker 4: It should be someone should have made a movie about
- 15:14Speaker 4: that they had. I guess in football they should have.
- 15:16Speaker 4: I guess they never played real games.
- 15:18Speaker 5: But no money.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Boll No, that's but let's get back to my real question, angels. Okay,
- 15:25Speaker 4: I want to go back to the trades because I
- 15:27Speaker 4: love this stuff you have on here, Jose Soreon on
- 15:29Speaker 4: re demos. Would they really do that? I mean they
- 15:32Speaker 4: have they finally have two guys that are pretty good
- 15:34Speaker 4: as pitchers. Now would they really train them? Because they
- 15:37Speaker 4: both have years of control left, don't they?
- 15:40Speaker 2: They do?
- 15:41Speaker 3: They both have two years of control after this season
- 15:43Speaker 3: and I don't like doing this, aja, but I'm gonna
- 15:46Speaker 3: do it anyway.
- 15:47Speaker 2: What else do they have?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Mike Trout?
- 15:52Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike Trout's awesome. He's also in his thirties and.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Stop. I mean, here's the thing. Yeah, I listen, I
- 16:08Speaker 2: appreciate it.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Zach Metto is a really good player, and I think
- 16:12Speaker 3: the Angels have a bunch of okay guys to complement
- 16:17Speaker 3: those two starting pitchers Mike Traut and Zach Netto.
- 16:20Speaker 2: And frankly, it's just not enough. And how do we
- 16:23Speaker 2: know it's not enough?
- 16:24Speaker 3: Because we look at their record, because we look at
- 16:27Speaker 3: the way that they play, because we look at their
- 16:29Speaker 3: farm system and it's not good, and it doesn't have
- 16:32Speaker 3: a lot of guys who are near big league g
- 16:34Speaker 3: ready and going to be impact type players. So if
- 16:37Speaker 3: you're in that scenario and you're taking an objective look
- 16:40Speaker 3: at how do we get out of it? I'm not
- 16:42Speaker 3: the guy who's going to advocate for straight up tanking.
- 16:46Speaker 3: I think that's a problematic thing in sports, period, and
- 16:50Speaker 3: I think the draft bottery has done a really nice
- 16:52Speaker 3: job of disincentivizing teams from doing that. But how if
- 16:56Speaker 3: you're the Angels, do you not look at your current
- 16:58Speaker 3: state of affairs and say we need to tear this
- 17:01Speaker 3: thing down and start over. I If Arty Moreno is
- 17:07Speaker 3: not going to go out and spend, and it's almost
- 17:10Speaker 3: like Josh Hamilton scared him off of that with the
- 17:14Speaker 3: five year, one hundred plus million dollar contract that had
- 17:18Speaker 3: negative war by the end of it. If Ardi Moreno
- 17:21Speaker 3: is not going to go out and spend, this team's
- 17:22Speaker 3: not going to be any better. I mean, they shopped
- 17:25Speaker 3: in the bargain basement this offseason hoping to land a
- 17:28Speaker 3: guy who could resurrect his career, and none of those
- 17:33Speaker 3: panned out. Now, they were low dollar signings, there was
- 17:35Speaker 3: not a whole lot that they were putting in to
- 17:38Speaker 3: do that. But this Angels team, it doesn't have a
- 17:41Speaker 3: good present, it doesn't have a particularly good future, and
- 17:45Speaker 3: so why wouldn't you start from scratch at this point
- 17:48Speaker 3: because Redebtmers and Jose Soreano both will have a ton
- 17:53Speaker 3: of trade value and bring back the sorts of packages
- 17:56Speaker 3: that can make your farm system good overnight.
- 18:00Speaker 1: With over thirty five million download Seakeeek is the number
- 18:03Speaker 1: one rated ticketing app and crats there are many many
- 18:08Speaker 1: baseball games on the inventory to check out all summer long.
- 18:11Speaker 1: This is the season now, it is baseball baseball season.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Not many other options for you sports wise. I know
- 18:17Speaker 1: you can go anywhere you want to go with Seakeek.
- 18:19Speaker 1: There's so many tickets to choose from. But baseball's center
- 18:22Speaker 1: stage now for the next couple months.
- 18:24Speaker 2: School's out.
- 18:25Speaker 5: I'm going to watch some baseball games, some big league games,
- 18:28Speaker 5: all in my area, and I want to know exactly
- 18:30Speaker 5: what it looks like. And I also want the best deal,
- 18:33Speaker 5: So I'm looking for the green, not the red.
- 18:35Speaker 1: That's right. The green hooks you up with the best
- 18:37Speaker 1: deals on the app. Of course, we have the code
- 18:40Speaker 1: it's Territory ten for ten percent off your next set
- 18:43Speaker 1: of tickets at seakeek. That's ten percent off any MLB
- 18:46Speaker 1: tickets with the promo code Territory one zero. Make sure
- 18:50Speaker 1: you click the link in the description of this episode
- 18:53Speaker 1: that'll download the app if you don't have it already,
- 18:55Speaker 1: and you'll have the code automatically added to your account
- 18:58Speaker 1: so that you can use that code later.
- 19:00Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 19:00Speaker 5: Sink Hardy Moreno wouldn't let his GM trade show hey
- 19:04Speaker 5: at the end, So we're going from talking about a
- 19:07Speaker 5: owner slash team slash GM, who's the least aggressive? Who
- 19:12Speaker 5: do you think is the most aggressive in the GM,
- 19:15Speaker 5: because every team's going to say, oh, man, you know
- 19:18Speaker 5: our team's definitely going to add a big time closer. Well, no,
- 19:21Speaker 5: you're not, because your GM doesn't make those moves. Who
- 19:24Speaker 5: are the top three? I don't need one hundred gms.
- 19:27Speaker 5: I just need three most aggressive gms that you'll see
- 19:30Speaker 5: make moves whether their team is good or not.
- 19:34Speaker 3: AJ Preler is at the top of the list, obviously,
- 19:36Speaker 3: And I think the Padres deadline is going to be
- 19:38Speaker 3: so fascinating this year because when you are in the
- 19:41Speaker 3: same league as the Dodgers and the Braves and the
- 19:45Speaker 3: Phillies and the Brewers, and like the National League is stacked, boys,
- 19:50Speaker 3: it's an impressive group of teams. And if you're aj
- 19:53Speaker 3: Preler and you see the way that your offense is
- 19:55Speaker 3: operated this year, and you look at the top of
- 19:58Speaker 3: your rotation, go get Tarek's scouble. I think if Ethan
- 20:02Speaker 3: Sallas is in a trade at very least Scott Harrison Detroit,
- 20:06Speaker 3: the president of Baseball Operations there, has to listen because
- 20:10Speaker 3: he might potentially be the best prospect back it's offered.
- 20:14Speaker 3: But is it worth renting Tarek's Scooble for a team
- 20:18Speaker 3: like this, a team that has flaws, or do you
- 20:21Speaker 3: look at.
- 20:21Speaker 2: It and say, you know what the.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Truth is, If we have Tarek scoobl if we have
- 20:26Speaker 3: Michael King, if we have this bullpen, we can go
- 20:30Speaker 3: out and beat absolutely anybody.
- 20:32Speaker 2: And it's a fair and reasonable thing to say.
- 20:36Speaker 3: But the Padres have mortgaged their farm system so much
- 20:40Speaker 3: in recent years, and they got Mason Miller out of
- 20:42Speaker 3: it for later debrees.
- 20:43Speaker 2: So that wound up being a win win.
- 20:46Speaker 3: But I just don't know if this is the Padres
- 20:49Speaker 3: team that's going to go out and chase other aggressive
- 20:52Speaker 3: general managers. Eric Neander with Tampa Bay Rays is very
- 20:58Speaker 3: much so. And the way that the Rays operate they
- 21:02Speaker 3: do it in both directions, So I don't think this
- 21:05Speaker 3: is going to be like a buy sell year try
- 21:07Speaker 3: and do both for the Rays. But in years past,
- 21:10Speaker 3: all the Rays are looking for is value. And then
- 21:14Speaker 3: Dave Dombrowski, of course in Philadelphia. You know, last year
- 21:19Speaker 3: John Deran looked like he was going to.
- 21:21Speaker 2: The Seattle Mariners.
- 21:22Speaker 3: The expectation was that was going to happen, and Dave
- 21:25Speaker 3: don Browski comes in at the end and offers make
- 21:28Speaker 3: able and Eduardo Tai and that was an offer of
- 21:30Speaker 3: Minnesota couldn't refuse. And so if Byron Buckson, for example,
- 21:35Speaker 3: gets out there on the trademarket, you know, Dave Don
- 21:37Speaker 3: Browski will be the first call to Jeremy zol Gm
- 21:40Speaker 3: in Minnesota looking to make a deal.
- 21:43Speaker 4: By the way, Jeff, I don't know if you know
- 21:44Speaker 4: this what Trek School can't hit. So if the Padres
- 21:47Speaker 4: get them, they're going to need somebody that can actually hit. Okay,
- 21:50Speaker 4: you know what.
- 21:53Speaker 3: You you are one hundred percent correct in the You know,
- 21:56Speaker 3: Ramon Loreano being out is really problematic for then, but
- 22:00Speaker 3: Ramon Loreano was there in a deal that didn't cost
- 22:03Speaker 3: them a whole lot at the deadline last year. So
- 22:06Speaker 3: I feel like you can get those sort of on
- 22:08Speaker 3: the margin bats at the deadline because pitchers, you know, relievers,
- 22:14Speaker 3: particularly in starters, are the real currency at the deadline.
- 22:18Speaker 3: It's not quite as much the case with bats, just
- 22:21Speaker 3: because you need to have a perfect fit positionally, and
- 22:24Speaker 3: a lot of teams, especially contending teams, especially playoff teams,
- 22:28Speaker 3: just don't match up necessarily with the inventory that's out there.
- 22:32Speaker 3: So I think you can get good deals on position players.
- 22:37Speaker 3: And those are the margins around AJ, around which AJ
- 22:40Speaker 3: Preller does such a great job navigating.
- 22:43Speaker 4: True. True, But if you don't have Tatis hitting, you
- 22:46Speaker 4: don't have Chado hitting, you.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Don't have anybody't have Meryl hitting.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Yeah, that's gonna be so listen the Tigers, Hey, Trek Scoble,
- 22:56Speaker 4: the Tigers had last couple of years and they haven't
- 22:58Speaker 4: done very well. I mean, I know they beat the
- 22:59Speaker 4: Guardian in the playoffs, they couldn't get best the Maritors.
- 23:02Speaker 4: But for me, that's why the Brewers. And I almost
- 23:05Speaker 4: I almost choked on my water when I was doing
- 23:07Speaker 4: a Fox game with Ken Rosenthal and he said on
- 23:10Speaker 4: the thing and they were playing the Dodgers. He said, well,
- 23:12Speaker 4: Trek Scoogles might be on the trading block and one
- 23:14Speaker 4: of these teams in this game might be one of
- 23:16Speaker 4: the teams.
- 23:17Speaker 5: They be the favorites.
- 23:18Speaker 4: And I'm thinking Dodgers dodge and he goes the Brewers,
- 23:20Speaker 4: and I was like, what, why want the Brewers make
- 23:24Speaker 4: a move like that because they have eighty two long
- 23:26Speaker 4: time ago, right, never won a World Series. You put
- 23:29Speaker 4: Scooble miss Harrison together with the way their offense works,
- 23:33Speaker 4: with that bullpen, the way Murph handles it, that sounds
- 23:35Speaker 4: pretty damn good, even in a tough National League.
- 23:38Speaker 2: It does.
- 23:39Speaker 3: And it's just a question of how uncomfortable are the
- 23:43Speaker 3: Brewers willing to get, because what we have to understand
- 23:46Speaker 3: here is that the Milwaukee Brewers guys are in the
- 23:49Speaker 3: position that they're in because they operate in a very
- 23:53Speaker 3: particular and meticulous way.
- 23:56Speaker 2: They are so good at process. When people ask me
- 24:00Speaker 2: why are.
- 24:00Speaker 3: The Brewers as good as they are, it's very simple.
- 24:04Speaker 3: They have processes that they have honed through the years
- 24:08Speaker 3: that they follow to a t and that had been
- 24:10Speaker 3: very successful. And it reminds me a lot, frankly of
- 24:14Speaker 3: the Cleveland Guardians and of the Tampa Bay Rays, and
- 24:17Speaker 3: where the Brewers have supercharged it is, frankly in Latin America,
- 24:21Speaker 3: and we've seen that with Jackson Curio, We're going to
- 24:24Speaker 3: see it with Jesus.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Made and Luis Pana.
- 24:27Speaker 3: And if the Brewers get outside of that realm, it's
- 24:31Speaker 3: just about risk taking. And this is an organization that's
- 24:34Speaker 3: been extraordinarily risk averse over time and that believes in
- 24:39Speaker 3: its evaluatory capacity that they can go out and find
- 24:43Speaker 3: guys and turn them into something. And to me, like,
- 24:47Speaker 3: when I look at that, and when I look at
- 24:49Speaker 3: the success of their player development system, what it says
- 24:52Speaker 3: to me is maybe the Brewers aren't always going to
- 24:54Speaker 3: get it right, but they're going to get it right
- 24:56Speaker 3: more often than most people. And because of that, that
- 24:59Speaker 3: gives them the ability to go out and make a
- 25:02Speaker 3: deal like this, which in the in the algorithm in
- 25:06Speaker 3: their model is going to say no, no, no. The
- 25:09Speaker 3: screen is going to flash bright red, the computer is
- 25:12Speaker 3: going to turn off. When you turn it back on,
- 25:15Speaker 3: it will say, don't do this, this is not good
- 25:17Speaker 3: for us.
- 25:18Speaker 2: But the truth is, what are we here for, man,
- 25:21Speaker 2: We're here to win rings. And the Milwaukee Brewers, with
- 25:24Speaker 2: Terrek's gooople Jacob Mazraski and Kyle Harrison at top of
- 25:27Speaker 2: their rotation, have about it as good a chance of
- 25:30Speaker 2: anyone outside of the Dodgers of winning a ring this year.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Jeff, do you like piggybacking starters? I just have to ask,
- 25:35Speaker 4: because I said it was a bad idency on these two,
- 25:38Speaker 4: these two guys, I'm sitting around, well not really, but
- 25:41Speaker 4: you know, on television say that they love the idea,
- 25:43Speaker 4: So I just want to know you're feeling. Since we
- 25:44Speaker 4: have a second here.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I think piggybacking starter sucks, I miss, I know I
- 25:50Speaker 3: liked you. Yeah, I knew I liked you, Jeff I.
- 25:53Speaker 2: And and here's the thing. I it's a half measure.
- 25:57Speaker 3: And you know, listen, if you ever watch Breaking Bad,
- 26:02Speaker 3: you know half measures don't work. I think Louis Castillo
- 26:06Speaker 3: would be a dynamic bullpen arm. And it's just a
- 26:11Speaker 3: matter almost more psychologically at this point, guys, because you
- 26:14Speaker 3: know how ball players are, and you know how pitchers are, especially,
- 26:18Speaker 3: Their identities are wrapped up in their roles and you
- 26:22Speaker 3: almost take on your personality, you know, in service of
- 26:26Speaker 3: that role. And Louis Castillo his entire career has been
- 26:30Speaker 3: a starting pitchers, So to suggest to him go to
- 26:32Speaker 3: the bullpen, it almost to a starting pitcher, feels like
- 26:35Speaker 3: a demotion. But the Mariners have five really good starting
- 26:40Speaker 3: pitchers in Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Brian wu Emerson, Hancock,
- 26:44Speaker 3: and Price Miller. Frankly, since he's been back, has been
- 26:46Speaker 3: the best of them all, and Luis Castillo has not
- 26:49Speaker 3: been that good this year. And so when you have
- 26:52Speaker 3: a bullpen that's struggling a little bit, it just makes
- 26:55Speaker 3: the most sense. I think that what the Mariners are doing, guys,
- 26:58Speaker 3: is just buying time. They're buying time until we get
- 27:03Speaker 3: to July, get to the All Star break, and then
- 27:06Speaker 3: you're gonna you know, we're going to see Kate Anderson
- 27:08Speaker 3: sooner than later. He's going to come up, and he's
- 27:10Speaker 3: probably going to be in a very similar fireman type
- 27:14Speaker 3: role there. And if you can have multi inning relievers
- 27:17Speaker 3: who can still be effective and can punch guys out,
- 27:21Speaker 3: like Luis Casillo's best stuff this year has come in
- 27:23Speaker 3: that piggyback role, which suggests me that if.
- 27:26Speaker 2: You do put him in the bullpen, we can see
- 27:28Speaker 2: a better version of him than we have in the rotation.
- 27:31Speaker 1: There you go, band Aid probably going to change second
- 27:34Speaker 1: half of the season. I'm not going to run that
- 27:36Speaker 1: the whole second half.
- 27:37Speaker 5: I'm just I'm so excited. I don't just want to
- 27:40Speaker 5: play Nintendo with Jeff all day.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I talk about piggybacking. We were like, let's do six
- 27:44Speaker 1: man if that's what they're going to do, And they're
- 27:46Speaker 1: worried about Louise's feelings, but yes, Jeff is more to
- 27:49Speaker 1: the point. Sorry, dude, you got cut. There's five others
- 27:52Speaker 1: better than you. You're better in the bullpen. Life comes
- 27:56Speaker 1: at you. Jeff, good stuff man. Great to have you
- 27:58Speaker 1: on again for anyone. The latest episode, for sources tell
- 28:01Speaker 1: Jeff Passon was with Tom Glavin, and we do plenty
- 28:04Speaker 1: of CBA talk on this show, so I advise everyone
- 28:06Speaker 1: to check out the back and forth with those two.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Appreciate you man, great catching up
- 28:11Speaker 2: All this pleasure boys, Thanks for having me
