- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Uh guys, here we go.
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Salt Company.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: So good to be back with you guys.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: It feels like we're finally in kind of the swing of things with Salt Company, which is so exciting.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hopefully you guys are also in the swing of things with classes and and all that.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: But if you have not met yet, my name's Owen.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I get the privilege of being on Staff here, leading this thing with the best uh group of people uh in the world.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: But hey, I'm I'm excited because we're uh jumping into a brand new uh sermon series, just like Olivia said, uh and we're calling it I Am.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, we're calling it I am.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And this past few weeks, guys, if you've been here, uh we've been covering what it takes um to be uh or what is essential uh rather in uh the life of Salt Company and we think in the life uh of you guys as students uh with as your time here in in uh in college kind of uh hopefully starts and then maybe is coming to an end.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: We got any seniors in the room?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Anybody?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Hey, you guys can make it.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I believe in you guys.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: So uh guys, we wanted to uh kind of piggyback off of our last series, calling it essential, because uh even though we're not calling it essentials and we're continuing, this is still very an essential part of uh our our ministry.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, you see, if you come to Salt Company, guys, we like to have a lot of fun.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: You guys know that, okay?
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: If you've been around for more than like five minutes, um you know that we like to dance, we like to laugh, um uh we play hacky sack all the time.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Occasionally someone will get up and chug a half gallon of milk uh just randomly, spontaneous.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Um but seriously, uh guys, in a sentence, salt company is this uh we we don't take ourselves too seriously, but we do take Jesus and the words of Jesus uh very, very seriously.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, there's never gonna be a week of Salt Company uh where we do not talk about Jesus.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's just not who we are, it's not who Salt Company is, now not who we are as a ministry.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: We will always talk uh about Jesus on Thursday night in connection group, uh, when we worship on Sunday.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: There it's always Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, and there's that's for a reason.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, in this next sermon series, because we're we're we're taking a look at what like who exactly Jesus is.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, here's what I don't want your relationship with Jesus to be like, guys, anyone been on a first date recently?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: You know, an anything fun?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: It's like, no, no one's dating in this room.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Uh fellas, we need to talk.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Boyd, he re that guy back there rose his hand, okay?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Uh good for you, my guy.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Good for you.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Um, yes, boyd.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Um, boyd, uh come come talk to me.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I'll reimburse you for your coffee that you took this girl on a date with.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Guys, if anyone, uh, do I want to do this?
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Anyone tonight who asks other girl, uh, I'll pay for their coffee, okay?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Um, but you have to give me proof.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, guys, here we go.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you've ever been on the first date, you know that like things can be like so awkward, okay?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: So awkward on the first date, because uh in one sense, you're like, okay, I don't really know this person.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Still trying to get to know like what they like, they're trying to get to know what I like.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: It's like, should I say this?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Should I bring up the ex?
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: No.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's like, I mean, I don't know if I'm gonna like uh or if if if they're gonna like me.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Are they gonna like the place that I chose dinner?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like, do they like pumpkin spice lattes?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Do they not?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Is it Starbucks?
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Are they against Starbucks?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: There's so many things that we're trying to figure out.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Man, do they like it?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Do they not like it?
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: And and here's what I don't want.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I don't want your relationship to f uh with Jesus to be like a first date.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, seriously, if like the rest of your life, you were just like kind of in this, man, I kinda know him, but like we're still, I'm still trying to figure it out, or it's like I kind of know him.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: He's been on a couple dates, but we don't, we don't really go deep at all, then that would be a failure for you, in my eyes.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: That would be a failure.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: You know, for you to live a life and in a relationship with Jesus that honestly isn't quite really a relationship at all.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Where you don't really know the person super well, you don't know Jesus very well, and you never like actually get to the important stuff in life.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: So here's here's what I'm trying to do.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, for the next six weeks, we are gonna be studying the book of John, and we're gonna be going through what is the I am statements.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Okay, seven statements that summarize exactly who Jesus is.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, as much, as much as you know, uh all of the social media dating apps can tell you who a person is, uh I don't want uh our view of who Jesus is to be uh whatever social media, whatever TikTok comments, um, you know, the like the social media warriors, I don't want that to be our view of Jesus.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I want Jesus to be our view of Jesus.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: So in the I am statements, we get seven statements coming directly from Jesus, explaining who he is, why he came, what he offers, and how our lives today are directly impacted by them almost 2,000 years later.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, by the time that we get to Fall Retreat, which will be our last uh I am statement.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, my hope is that you'll have a better understanding of who Jesus is and how we can all be better disciples of him.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: That's what we're doing.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: That's my goal for this sermon series.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: So what we're gonna do, we're gonna hop right in.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Normally we start with like a big story.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: That's it for intro today.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: We're going straight into the meat and potatoes of this thing.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: So here's what you can do.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: You can go to the book of John.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Most of you are already there.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Uh, but if you don't have a Bible tonight, they'll be up on the screens uh as well.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: And you go to chapter six, chapter six of John.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Okay, and the book of John is the gospel, meaning that it's a testament, okay, a testament of Jesus through the lens, through the eyes of one of his disciples, that being John.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: He's following them around, he's uh you know, following Jesus with the other 11 uh broskies, and they're they're seeing everything that Jesus would teach, all that uh, you know, him talk with people, perform miracles.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: And in John 6, this specific chapter, we actually get a lengthy piece of dialogue between Jesus and a large group of people, uh, most likely Jewish uh people, right after Jesus miraculously feeds 5,000 people.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: So what happens is Jesus he feeds 5,000 people, and everyone is like blown away by this.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Obviously, it it he takes some fish and some bread and he uh prays over it, blesses it.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I do this with my Chick-fil-A.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: It's like, Lord, if you're gonna be good to me, you know, you'll turn this into five uh, you know, uh Chick-fil-A sandwiches.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Uh just kidding, don't do that.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Don't do not subscribe to that version of Christianity.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Um but that's what he does, and man, it it blows up, he feeds all of them.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: There's 12 extra baskets, and these people are like, oh heck yeah, I'm in.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Imagine walking in the dining hall and they're just like, nah, no need for a swipe today.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: You're in for free, okay?
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: No free food when you're around Jesus.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: But but seriously, Jesus sees, like, like this happens, people are astounded, and then Jesus sees exactly how they're responding to uh the free meals.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Uh and the people, he notices that, man, they want they want to make Jesus king.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, they want to make Jesus an earthly king because uh they have these hopes that maybe maybe he will be the one to overthrow the Roman government and then uh we'll we'll live in harmony for the rest of our days.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: You see, at the time, the Roman government, big, they were oppressing people, high taxes, okay, and it's like you guys don't really have to worry about taxes right now, but high taxes, low uh you know, low, low living standards, and they they weren't loving it.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, and they're like, maybe this Jesus guy can change the whole narrative of our life right now.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: So, what does Jesus do?
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Of course, he doesn't want to be king, at least uh not in an earthly sense.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: He already is king over everything, but he goes and he flees to the away from the crowd and across this sea, across the sea of Galilee.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Jesus goes and he's by himself for a little bit.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Well, obviously, when you give someone free food, uh they're probably gonna come back.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So, what do these guys do?
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Man, they like beeline straight for Jesus.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: They go either uh across the sea, they they walk around it, anything to get close to Jesus, these guys follow.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, so for a couple of days, man, they're they're following after Jesus, trying to find him on the other side.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: And this is where we see the real motivation, the real heart posture of the people in John 6.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: You can look at verse 26.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: This is what it says.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: We pick up right uh where we left off with people coming in.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Jesus, he answered them.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: He says, Truly, I tell you, you are looking for me not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: It's like this truly just uh goes past everything on the outside, goes straight to their heart because uh they wanted to find Jesus purely for like uh what he could do for them.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Okay, they got free food and and they were going to find him.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Not because they wanted to hear him uh talk, hear him teach, do like they purely wanted him for the miracles that he could do and what they could do for him.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, guys, it's it's a lot like you guys, uh maybe, maybe ladies, uh anyone big into cars or shoes, like I see the same, like one and the same.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Um, but seriously, like if you love your car uh or if you love your shoes, it's like man, you you get no creases in the J's, okay?
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's pretty uh that's like uh universal.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: You don't crease the J's, you keep them nice and clean.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, if you if you love your car, it's always clean.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: No dense, you're paying extra at the apartment to keep it in a garage.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: It's it's never getting hurt, it's always up on its oil change, and it looks pristine at all times, right?
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And then there's other people who are just like, man, my car, my shoes, uh, I don't really care.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: It's like it gets me from point A to point B, and it's alright.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, some people are like that, some people love it.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: But but those people who don't really care, it's like it's purely a means to an end.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: That that's the only reason that you wear shoes, is because you have to.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, the only reason you have a car is because you have to.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, it'd be uh hard to live life without one.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: But this is exactly where these people, like this people's hearts were in the same exact place.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: In the same exact place.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Their view of Jesus was what can this guy do for me?
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Right, and thus far, he's done a lot.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: They've fed him, I mean, he's turned water into wine, he's doing all these miracles, but but they're wondering, man, what else can Jesus do for me?
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So they seek after him.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Right, and I wonder, like, man, how often do do we ourselves do this?
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, there might be some people in the room right now that are thinking, yep, that's me.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: I know at a time in my life, this was absolutely me.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: I grew up in a church, I grew up in it going to church.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Both my parents, all my sisters, we would pile in the car.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: I did all of the things.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Youth group on Wednesday nights, okay.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: I I was there.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Um but my little seven-year-old brain at the time, and all even as I entered into high school, I was mainly using Jesus as like my get out of hell free card.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: So like some call it the Jesus uh insurance policy, but also just like taxes, you guys don't know anything about insurance.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: You don't have to do that.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: All you know that is like your dad pays for it, which is a good um, but seriously, that that's how I thought it was.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm doing my own thing.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Jesus is like kind of like the side piece in my life.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: It's like I would sometimes hit him up uh if I needed to, but but not too often.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: But he just wasn't the main thing in my life.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: But I really only was using Jesus as like a safety net in my life.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Like as long as one day I enter into heaven, right, there's no pain, no sickness, my family's there, I'll be good.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: That was purely my view and what the relationship I had with Jesus.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: And it wasn't, it wasn't until college that my whole view of who Jesus was changed drastically and for the better.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: When I realized that without Jesus in my life, or Jesus in my heart and he was Lord over my life, that if I didn't have that, everything was pointless, pointless.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Some dude actually had to sit me down and say, Owen, if you don't have Jesus in your life, what's the point?
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: But but seriously, how often do we use Jesus in this same exact way?
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Where we put an outward facade on for for the people around us that were like looking like we're pursuing after Christ.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Because the people in the story, man, they were doing it.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: It seemed like they were running after Jesus, right?
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: They were seeking after him, they were willing to walk miles to go after Jesus across seas to be near him.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: They might have been running after Jesus on the outside, but on the inside, and what their heart said, I mean, it they they were stagnant.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: They were like feet in some quicksand.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: And maybe you want nothing to do with Jesus tonight, because you came simply to you you came here tonight simply as a vice to fill you in in an empty way.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Or you're coming to Salt Company to appease your parents, because you can tell them I went to church on Thursday.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Maybe you signed up for fall retreat because there's a bunch of fun games, or maybe you want to hang out with the people here at Salt Company so you know you have friends, but you don't want Jesus.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Right now, if that's you, I'll tell you, man, you're coming to Salt Company for the wrong reasons.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, you don't just come to come, but man, you come for Jesus.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Christianity isn't just a religion that you practice, but it's a relationship with the God of the universe.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: If the only thing that describes your relationship with Jesus is the attendance in church, you're missing out on a lot.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And guys, it's it's not just the the new people.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Guys, so often, people, even in uh our church today, man, myself included, we we think that we can pick and choose what we want when it comes to Jesus.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Like we want, we I mean, we for sure want the power of Jesus, but maybe we don't want the person of God.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, we want the blessings of God, but we don't want the burden that's often attached with it.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: All right, we want the cross, but we don't want the crown.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: Because we we either have all of Jesus or you have none of it.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: You either have all of Jesus or you have none of him.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: This describes the heart of the people that were uh in John 6.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: So here's how Jesus continues on.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: He says this in in verse 27.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: It says, Don't work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which is, or which the Son of Man will give you.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Because God the Father has set his seal of approval on him.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: And here's the people respond.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: What can we do to perform the works of God?
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: They asked.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Jesus replied, This is the work of God that you believe in the one he has sent.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Verse 30.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: What sign then are you going to do so that we may see and believe you?
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: They asked.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: What are you going to perform?
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just that it is just as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Jesus said to them, Truly, I tell you, Moses didn't give you bread from heaven, but my father gives you the true bread from heaven.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Then they said, Sir, give us this bread always.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: So the entire crowd, who, by the way, has been witnessing everything that Jesus has been doing so far.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Like, heck, he just made food appear out of nowhere.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: He turned water into white, he walks on water, everything.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: But apparently for them that that wasn't enough.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, you read it and they're like, man, what sign are you gonna do for us?
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Like, are are you can you do something else like uh that that that we might know what kind of bread that you're talking about?
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: We want it, uh, but can you just like show us one quick sign?
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Because what you've done so far hasn't uh you know been enough.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: And honestly, they refer back to what they know, right?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: These people would have been Jewish, they would have known their past, and and they refer back to something in Exodus in verse 31.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: It says, Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness just that is written.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: So, what does this mean?
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: This is referencing, like I said, back in Exodus.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Man, God provides in a miraculous way for the people of Israel.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: For 40 years, man, they're in the desert, they're wandering around, and what does God do?
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Man, he provides for them.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Every single day, bread rains down from heaven.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, I know we haven't seen rain in a long time, but man, it'd be pretty crazy.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Like, what would be crazier?
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Rain coming down from heaven or bread?
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Right now, honestly, it's close.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: But seriously, like this is what happens for 40 years.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Bread rains down from heaven, manna.
- 15:05unknown: Right?
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: So you can you can you guys see like like Jesus, can you do something like that?
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: We we would love to see that.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Man, these people, man, they have no eyes to see like who Jesus actually is.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: They can see what Jesus is doing, but they don't see who Jesus really is.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: And just man, he plainly comes out and he just says it.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: In verse 35, he just says it.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: He says, I am the bread of life.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Jesus told him.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: No one comes, no one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be ever be thirsty again.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: So finally, Jesus mean he just he just says it.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: He's like the bread, that's me.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, the bread is me.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: I am the main dish at dinner.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: I'm not the side chick, okay?
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: At Chipotle, I ain't the chicken, I'm the steak, queso, guac, everything good on it.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: I'm chips.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: It's like I'm the bread.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: This it's talking about me, guys.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Like I am the man that came down from heaven, not back then, but I am sent by the Father as the bread of life.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: What you guys are searching for, what I'm speaking of, this is about me.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: So here's the first I am statement from Jesus.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: It's that I am the bread of life.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: You guys are gonna see the the entire series of the I Am series throughout John.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: We see that Jesus, I mean, he's using like our everyday things, everything that we can see, experience, all of that, he uses it probably because we're not God ourselves and we can't see it.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: We're like the people who are like, I mean, I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: You're talking about bread.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: But when in reality he's talking about Jesus, he does this so often where he connects with us in in our eyes, in our view of what uh eternity is, and he uses it to deliver a deep message to the story that he's telling us.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: And the first one, it's bread, okay, not Chipotle bread or not uh Panera bread.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: This is much better bread.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: So here's what I want to do.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, rest of our time tonight, I'm gonna keep reading and take a look at what the bread of life really means and what it does for us, how we can relate to it today.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: So here's what you can do.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Look back at verse 29.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Here's the first thing it says Jesus replied to the to the people, this is the work of God that you believe in the one he has sent.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Jesus as the bread of life saves.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: The bread saves, or in other words, Jesus saves.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Guys, this is this is the beauty of the gospel.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Like, like normally in sermons, uh we're we're taught, and we're like, as we're raising up it to be uh preachers, it's like, okay, here's what you want to do.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: You want to build tension, you want to leave the gospel, you know, towards the end, and then there's this big like connection of everything.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Not in this one, okay?
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Guys, gospel first in this one.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: This is the gospel uh right here.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: We we're gonna get to it nice and quick.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: The first thing that we need to see that Jesus being the bread is that the bread saves us.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: But in order to really appreciate the sacrifice of what Jesus has done for us, him coming as the bread of life, we must first know exactly what we're being saved from.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: To in in to in order to appreciate the life wrath that's being thrown out to us, we have to acknowledge the storm that we've gotten ourselves into.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, we we see this clearly painted uh by Paul in Romans 3.23.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: It says this, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: And when it says all, I mean it means all.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Trust me.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: There's not a single person in this room, in the state of Texas, on this planet, that this verse does not apply to other than Jesus.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: From almost the very start of the Bible, we see that sin has plagued humanity.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Plagued it.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Adam and Eve, disobeying God, eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, has set a stain on all of humanity.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Not one person is not affected by this.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: It was the sin of one man that cursed humanity forever.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: And every single day we we feel this effect on us.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, the feeling of loneliness because the community that we were supposed to have has now been broken by drama and gossip.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: The relationship with the girlfriend or the boyfriend ends because our view of what love is has been skewed by what pornography and what social media tells us.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Disease, war, death, these are all consequences of the sin that we experience every day.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: But what Jesus says here is the truth, guys.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: That the work of God is that we would believe.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: And so come in, this is how you receive the bread of life.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: The bread that according to Jesus will both satisfy the wrath of God and gives eternal life.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: The gospel is that even though sin has stained us, Jesus' blood has covered us.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: In verse 28, or in verse 48 of John 6, Jesus says, I am the bread of life.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness and they died.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone who eats of it and not die.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Because this is the gospel tonight.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: I saw a company that if you believe in Jesus, man, he saves.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: The bread saves.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: He is the living water that will never run dry.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: He is the bread that will never leave us hungry.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: So the bread saves.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Let's keep reading in John 6.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: You can go back to 38 quickly with me.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Jesus has come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: This is the will of sent me, uh, of him who sent me, that I should lose none of those he has given me, but should raise them up on the last day.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Because this is the second thing that the bread does for us as believers today is that the bread also seals us.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, Jesus saves us.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Jesus as the bread of life saves us.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: Jesus as the bread of life also seals us.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: And what what this verse is basically saying is that, hey, once you're saved, once you have uh like genuinely professed your faith in Jesus, you can never lose that salvation.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, that this idea is taught all over scripture.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: There's so many places you could go.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Here's one, okay?
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Romans 8 30 says this and those he predestined, he also called, and those he called, he also justified, and those he justified, he also glorified.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of fides.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: But seriously, this is what it means.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: It follows the progression of the life of a Christian, right?
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: In which we're saved by God and leads us all the way to the end until we die.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, you can see it here.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: Predestined by God.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Man, before the start of time, he knew us and he chose us.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Man, amen to that.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: And then we come to know him.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden we're justified, instantaneous, legal standing before God, and then one day we die, enter into heaven, and we're glorified with him forever and eternity.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: This is something that truly only believers in Christ, man, we are able to be secure in our salvation because of what Christ has done on the cross, because of what his word says.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Once we are saved, Christian, you gotta know this.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: You cannot lose that.
- 21:59unknown: Okay.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: This reminded me of what I saw.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know if anyone follows some college football.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe let's go.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Excited.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: UNT is going to beat Texas State this weekend, I believe.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: But yes, go mean green.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: But seriously, I think it was last year.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: SEC football, there's this guy.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: His name's DJ Lagway.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: He uh was the quarterback for the Florida Gators.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Now he is just down the road in Waco at Baylor.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: So pretty much what happened last year.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: LSU comes to town and it's like, hey, Florida, LSU, this should be a great game.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Should be a big matchup.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Although Florida hasn't been great the past couple of years.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: So they're kind of looking, they want to be on the up and up.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: So here's what happens.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: DJ Lagway, man, he gets in this game, five interceptions, and they lose by like almost 100, which is just, man, sucks for him.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: But seriously, five interceptions.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: This dude is like, seriously, 18 years old, and he's got to go in front of a bunch of media people, and they're going to ask him questions.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Hey, why do you suck pretty much?
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: That's what they're going to ask him.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly what they do.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: He gets in front of all these people and they say, like, man, how like how you taking it?
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: You know, what's going on?
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: And he described it in this way.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: He describes a conversation they had with his mom.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: And basically he's telling her, Mom, like, yeah, didn't go great.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: She's like, Yep, I know.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: But at the end, she tries to console him.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: She's like, babe, God's got you.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Like, honey, like, God has got you.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Like, no matter how many interceptions you throw, he's got you.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: And here's how DJ Lagway, here's how he responds.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: He says, I think God has forgotten me.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Like, that bad.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Five interceptions bad.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: I think God has forgotten me.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: And some of you guys, man, you need to hear that more than you need to hear anything else tonight.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: And it's this is that God loves you.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: God loves you, He has forgiven you, and He will never unforgive you.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: I know that in the Christian life, man, there are some hard times.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Times when it seems like we're unable to shake a sin that just continues no matter what we do, how hard we try to fight it.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Times when it doesn't really feel, when it does feel like God has forgotten us and forsaken us by what's going on in our life.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Man, no matter what situation you are in, you could have just committed the worst sin.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: The thing that you promised, man, I will never do this in my life ever.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: You might have just committed that.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: God does got you.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: He will never unforgive you.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: He has forgiven you.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: His blood does cover you.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: God loves you.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: John 10, 28, reaffirms this strongly, that once we are saved, we are always saved.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: We can never lose our salvation.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: It says this in John 10.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: It says, I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: No one will snatch them out of my hand.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: My Father who has given them to me is greater than all.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: No one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: I and the Father are one.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: You can never sin so much that Christ's blood cannot cover you.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: You can never run so far that Jesus will not chase you down.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: And so coming, if you are a believer, you are forgiven, redeemed, and by God, you are secured in Christ.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: And how we ought to respond and how the people respond.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: You can go all the way down to verse 66.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: And at this point, a lot of people who are following Jesus have brought up, like, man, okay, uh, he says all this stuff, and they're starting to think, like, okay, is this dude crazy?
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: He's telling me I gotta eat his blood and eat his body.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Like, that's um a little interesting thing to tell me to do.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but they're starting to ask themselves a question, like, man, is this guy, is this Jesus dude really worth it?
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Is it worth uh following this God?
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: And see how it turns out for them.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: It says in verse 66, it says, From that moment, many of his disciples turned back and no longer accompanied him.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: And so here's what happened is that these people following Jesus around, man, they get they get to the point where they gotta make a decision.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, they gotta make a decision to follow Jesus, not to follow Jesus.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: And when they look at their life, they they make the decision to chase after the things that aren't Jesus, to chase after the things of the world.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: They take an honest look at their life, and when they're forced with a decision to either follow Jesus or to follow the desires after their heart, they choose the world.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: They think, hey, maybe the things of this world are gonna satisfy, maybe the things that Jesus doesn't have, maybe I can find something better.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: You know, maybe if that's you tonight, maybe you've got one foot in the world and one foot with Jesus, and you're here tonight trying to decide, man, is it worth following after Jesus?
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Then I hope you would hear this and see what's happening here tonight because I think that's a pretty scary place to be.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: One foot with Jesus, one foot in the world.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And these people they leave Jesus.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: They do, they say, it's too hard for me to continue.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: I can't do it.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: They think that there's the the grass is greener for them on the other side of the hill.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: But in in reality, you gotta see what's happening here.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Because they're chasing after the things that will never fulfill them.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: It will never be enough.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: These people, they leave Jesus, they're chasing after money, success, power, influence, sex, you name it, whatever it is, they are chasing after it.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: And it's never gonna be enough for them, right?
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: At one time it's man, if I got 50k in my bank account, that's good.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, and then uh all of a sudden it's not good.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: Then it's 100k, then it's 200k.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Man, if I have the new car, then I'll be good.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: If I have the new iPhone, the new house, whatever it is, man, they're trying to fill a hole in their life that only Jesus is able to fill.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Because then if that's you, you gotta see the words of Jesus.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: You gotta see what has truly worked in life and see and take into account what Jesus says here.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Because he says, Man, whoever eats the bread of life will never hunger or thirst.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: His fulfillment is forever.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: It's eternal, the bread of eternal life.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: It leads us to how Peter responds here in verse 67.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: So Jesus said to the twelve, You don't want to go away too, do you?
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Simon Peter, he answered.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: He says, Lord, to whom will we go?
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: You have the words of eternal life.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: I can just imagine like this situation here.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Like Simon Peter, there's 12 guys left.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: And the Jesus is like, You guys want to go too?
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: And I mean, they're just looking around, they're like, Well, we got nothing else.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: It's like, our families are back there, our jobs are back there, any uh life of success and wealth, in prosperity is back there.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: But in in that moment, not only was they had nowhere else to go, but in that moment the disciples understood something that 4,988 other people were unable to understand.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: They had tasted, they had seen, they had heard the words of Jesus, but they understood that Jesus didn't come to satisfy their desires, he came to change them and then to fulfill them.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Jesus has come not to fulfill our desires, but he has come to change them and then fulfill them.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Guys, when we when we follow Jesus, the desires of our heart starts to change.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: The things that we start to think about change.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: What we desire, change.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: What once was sweet is now better.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: We see the things of God as something to pursue.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: He didn't come to satisfy our desires, he came to change them.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: He came as the counselor, counselor who will always hear us, and guys, he came as the savior who will forever save us.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: And guys, he is the bread that satisfies us.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Every desire of our heart that we could ever want is satisfied in him.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: But more importantly, every desire in wrath of God has been satisfied on the cross for you.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: He offers you a free eternal life that you might accept him.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: The invitation is free, but guys, the cost of it was not.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: I pray that you would.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: Let's bow and we'll sing.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: God, I'm grateful for your word.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: God, I'm I'm more grateful that you would humble yourself to come down to earth in the likeness of sinful flesh, yet you weren't sinful yourself.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: How beautiful is that.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: God, remind us every day, man, of how hungry we are.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: Man, it just be a testament to how uh we are unable to be God's ourselves.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: We have a need to hunger, right?
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: Breakfast, and then uh we get a break.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: I'm hungry at lunch, and then Lord knows I'm hungry at dinner when I get home.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: Lord, would that just be a testament to remind myself, man, we are a hungry people, often pursuing after things that are unable to satisfy that hunger.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: But Lord, your word is true.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: We know that in John 6, you call yourself that you are the bread of life.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: And Lord, I pray that myself, everyone in this room, would we just feast on your bread day in and day out?
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Know that you have come and you have satisfied the wrath of God, that you have redeemed us, you have saved us, and Lord, that you have secured us in your set in your sacrifice.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: God, I pray that that would be true tonight.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: And Lord, would you just put that on our heart as we leave here tonight?
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: God, pray all this in your name.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: Amen.
