- 4:23a book that we did to help bring hope, spread hope, and
- 4:29to spread some love during this holiday season to those that are incarcerated. But
- 4:33then I thought about it. It's not just about those that are incarcerated,
- 4:38because even sometime when we are in the free world, we still sometimes struggle
- 4:44and we're in prison in the mind. So it's for that person that may
- 4:48be struggling in the mind. So tonight, y'all, I have a special
- 4:58guest. She is the reason and why this book was being created. He's
- 5:06one of the inspirations behind why this book is being created, and I am
- 5:11honored to have her on here tonight. I want you guys to really pay
- 5:15attention and listen. I want you all to share this out in your circle
- 5:20of influence because you never know what the next person may be in need of
- 5:25how you can assist in You never know when you may find yourself in this
- 5:29situation. But please share this in your circle of influence. For those that
- 5:33do not know who I am, I'm affectionately known across these social media streets
- 5:40as the Queen of Collaboration. But I'm just Angela Thomas Smith, the little
- 5:44old country girl from leveland South Carolina, trying to be the change that I
- 5:47desire to see in this world, utilizing my voice and my platforms to do
- 5:53just that. So y'all share this, Share this, Share this. You
- 5:58never know who may need. Is again the book that you see behind me,
- 6:03These women that you see behind me. They are the twenty Queens of
- 6:09Hope. They are a part of this book, and this book is dedicated
- 6:13to this queen that is on the line right now to me. Go Welcome,
- 6:18welcome, welcome, Hello, how are you? I am great.
- 6:27We've had a couple of conversations, and I tell you, every time I
- 6:32get off the phone with you, my heart aches and I don't feel totally
- 6:42like complete, like it feels like a piece of meat was left on that
- 6:46phone call because my heart aches for you and those queens that are incarcerated for
- 6:53the things that you guys have to endure. I hear your story and my
- 6:58heart truly goes out to you. We talk about I can't tell your story,
- 7:04so I want you to tell your story to those that are listening tonight.
- 7:10I want to give them a little insight because I've talked about you several
- 7:15times to the young ladies that's a part of this book that you're going to
- 7:19be receiving. The twenty Queens of Hope, we came together to spread a
- 7:26little hope and love during the season to you and those that are encarcerated,
- 7:30and not just those that are incarcested, but those that may be in prison
- 7:35in the mind, because a lot of us that's free in the free world
- 7:40still struggle, and we still go through some stuff and we still have some
- 7:44issues. So I'm gonna turn it over to you because I love the talk,
- 7:48and I'll get the talking. And I know you only got thirty minutes,
- 7:51so I want you to be able to share and to be able to
- 7:57get your story out and to share whatever's layd on your heart because I know
- 8:00it's so much, and I know this is not going to be a chance
- 8:05for you to share everything, but at least you can share enough to where
- 8:09people can get an idea. And I know I'm gonna have to bring you
- 8:11back some more, probably about ten, twelve, thirty times, but yeah,
- 8:18go ahead, introduce yourself and share how you feel led to share on
- 8:24tonight. Well, hell America, thank you for letting it and checking the
- 8:30time. I favor of my story and I hope that I can open the
- 8:33eyesights of a lot of people and they can actually see this is not a
- 8:37joke being in this price. This is very surreal. But Samika Nicole Benjamin,
- 8:43I came to prison from exist insects at the age of fifteen, I
- 8:48committed a crime of capital murder. I have three co defenses that were all
- 8:52three older than me. That ruled out the deffinity. And it's probably based
- 8:56upon the judicial systems. That's the only reason that I'm allowed today. When
- 9:00I came to prison, there was no tuyc for a girl that committed a
- 9:03capital murder of sin. And of course I was judged vice because I came
- 9:07from the Marshall Teks area, which is East Takes nine oh three is not
- 9:11a joke. So I came to prison. I came from a pretty good
- 9:16background, the great mother who did everything she could to take me to great
- 9:20heights in life. I was a while. I want a little rebellious,
- 9:24but I can't admit I committed a crime, and I understand what I did
- 9:28was very wrong. But coming here at the age of fifteen, there was
- 9:31no keyc try to explaining to a fifteen year old what they being wrong.
- 9:37I was lost, I was broken, I was afraid. I came to
- 9:41prison with a license for capital murder. Here I haven't been rehabilitated by the
- 9:48system. I've been deprived, I've been neglected, I've been mistreated on our
- 9:52accounts physically mentally, socially, spiritually, emotionally, and I have to build
- 10:00myself back up in this place. This prison hasn't taught me or offered me
- 10:03anything except for a survival guy. It taught me how to stay out,
- 10:07to not want to be here, to not want to go through any of
- 10:09this. This is cruelty. Well, I got to prison for judge,
- 10:15the DA, the prosecutors. They all know each other. They're all cool.
- 10:18They go to lunch, they go to brunch, they hang out.
- 10:20I would see the life sentence and someone, a boy, a white male,
- 10:24committed the exact same crime. He got twenty years, twenty years because
- 10:31his grandfather, the same one he murdered. Mind, you know, everyone
- 10:33in a system, Judge, Lloyd, District Attorney, prosecutor, they're all
- 10:39in cahoots. Yet again, he got twenty and I got a life sentis
- 10:43the coming year. I came to prison at sixteen, directly the prison.
- 10:46My first union was Mountain View Union. I asked to be reprogrammed to know
- 10:54how to live this prison lifestyle. I'm an only child, I'm not small
- 11:00up brady by far. But the things I've learned in here, it has
- 11:03been instilled in my head that those are comping skills, those are survival skills.
- 11:07So I had to put my childhood behind me and becoming adult real quick.
- 11:13And it's hard being in here. You need family, you need strength,
- 11:16you need wisdom, you need that push. Prison didn't give me that.
- 11:22If your family members are out there listening the bey in here, please
- 11:26help them stand by them. I watch crazy people get assaulted. They think
- 11:30they're crazy. They're not crazy. They hear things in their heads, and
- 11:33we don't what they hear. They put them on this unit. I'm on
- 11:37the higher Union now. I've been on several units to our prison. I've
- 11:41been through our customer levels G four, G five. AD said that I
- 11:45had to change. I had to let go of the anger that got me
- 11:48here because I was misunderstood and misguided, and I was led to believe that
- 11:52I would just do a little time. I didn't even know what a lot
- 11:54of ciness was when they gave it to me. The old hands had to
- 11:58show me what that was. Now I'm considered old head because I've been here
- 12:01so long, but I know how to do this stuff and get out.
- 12:05Now. This is not a joke to me. This is not my life,
- 12:07but my own. I don't know, Tamika. You still there,
- 12:26well, y'all, that's prison life for you. She was on a tablet,
- 12:31I think, and she tells me that they have connection issues if she
- 12:37can well, so she faded out. She's staying out. You're in and
- 12:45out, but she's still hanging in there. Yeah, I can hear you
- 12:50now. But being here, I have to and something and I know it's
- 13:00freedom out there, and I want to give it all coming in here.
- 13:03I have to get my emotionals degree. I have to get my master's degree
- 13:09here, so I'm working under that. But on the education, I seek
- 13:11it because I go and I want that knowledge. I have to seek that
- 13:13knowledge can see doesn't offer me anything in here, and I feel abandoned.
- 13:22It's not easy being here. You see people die. You see the officers
- 13:26that have brutality. They come in here. They treat you like you're an
- 13:28animal, like you're an out head. Yes, I made a mistake,
- 13:31but I undergo the others don't. It's I have to see and watch things
- 13:35that I have no control over. If it's horrible to be here and to
- 13:39see it, Wow, for that person that have never experienced or know anything
- 13:50about what it may look like. Can you draw a picture for us?
- 13:56What is a day to day routine for you? And how long have you
- 14:01been incarcerated. I've been incarcerated since the age of fifteen. I'm now forty
- 14:07seat. I had my sixteenth birthday and they assignment to my first unit here.
- 14:13Coming into this place, you're scared or shook your nerdouess. Is so
- 14:18much to see in here and pay attention to do. You have to remember
- 14:20a TDC number that you will be no notice or known for throughout your whole
- 14:26incarceration. You have to remember this number every single place. You're known by
- 14:31a number. You're no longer a name. They give you what they call
- 14:35basic hog is look for as a green soul. They give you five and
- 14:39they want you to pay with that. They give you toothpowder. Back then,
- 14:43when I first came to prison, they gave you tooth powder. You're
- 14:46not coming in prison. They don't even offer you tooth powder if it's not
- 14:50for the churches don't make anything to these prisons. You don't have anything coming
- 14:54in here, and you have to struggle. Everything is the struggle. The
- 14:58food is discussing sometimes that man, I guess we eat a ton of pork.
- 15:01Everything's left over cold or its bactually looks like grow up. They don't
- 15:05apply themselves to anything that they eat up. These officers, they treat you
- 15:09like trash. They talk to you as if you're beneath their feet, and
- 15:13they demand to stink from you. They brutalize you. They usually and emotionally
- 15:20call you for life by you being comfortable of bees and ages, just for
- 15:24no reasons, because they have the job and they can't and it's allowed.
- 15:31There's no structure. Every day I have to wake up wondering what's gonna happen
- 15:35today. Who's gonna hanging herself today? Because the guards didn't come by and
- 15:39check on them. They don't do security. Security awareness takes it here.
- 15:43I'm looking out the door and I see inmates without soul, inmates without hygienes,
- 15:50inmates that they're the press that are said they're opening. And this is
- 15:56the time, a close to the holidays, where a lot of girls and
- 15:58women they hang up sells the kills that cut, and these officers they don't
- 16:03care. So every day that I wake up in here, it's a constant
- 16:07reminds her of I have to get out of here. I need to help
- 16:11somebody. I need to go tell this officer, this lady need a bar.
- 16:15So I need to go. Try to go in myself to help this
- 16:18lady because she don't have anything, She don't have family, she don't she
- 16:21don't even own the task. Where's her head, where's her support? Every
- 16:26day my routine is her vifle. It's wake up. But I still have
- 16:29to remember I have children, I have grandchildren, I have siblings. I
- 16:33want somebody to help them, don't cast them away and throw them in here.
- 16:37So every day that I wake up, it's a routine. Her vival.
- 16:40Can't up, run out, go to breakfast at dren'clock in the morning.
- 16:44In the world we still eat breakfas at ten o'clock. Ten o'clock takes
- 16:48her team and work eat bricky. You come to prison, there's no more
- 16:51that. It's like boot camp military army with a hint of we're in a
- 16:56concentration camp. It's like you have to come to trade on being good,
- 17:00walking the straight narrow. You're gonna get crossed out to be the case.
- 17:04This boy, I got the attitudes. You're gonna get a case. But
- 17:07this sergeant is after you are you're gonna get a case. They're gonna take
- 17:11it so old, you're gonna get it set out. It's fear it's fearful
- 17:15in this place. I don't wake up with the same smile that I had
- 17:18when I was a fifteen year old. I don't have that same anything to
- 17:22where I can wake up instantly smile or to laugh because there's nothing to laugh
- 17:30about it this place. Prison is serious and the things that go on around
- 17:33people out today it's horrible. The family members to the lock up in this
- 17:40place stands by him cause the unditity to them. If they say they need
- 17:44money sending, if they say they don't have ideas that times I've send me
- 17:48because they don't, Gods will take your part. If they have an attitude
- 17:51that will turn this stuff, throw away, give it away, put your
- 17:55id in the trash so you can't go to come and tear it out of
- 17:57sight. Every day. It's what I wake up routinely trying to stay away
- 18:03from every day since I was fifteen. So how is that? How is
- 18:10that possible? For the guards? What happens if you found agreemance against them?
- 18:17There should be some process to be able to report them because they should
- 18:21not have that much power to where they can and do that. They retaliate
- 18:27everyone on the will p how a unit. It's crooked. So are related.
- 18:33They're either related or they had They have sense with each other here.
- 18:37So if you come put a stargeant right now complaining about anything, I promise
- 18:42you he's going to tell a field yourself gonna get through up whatever you have
- 18:47in there. If you have pictures of your family, they're gonna be the
- 18:49story with going in the toilet. This is what happens down here every morning
- 18:55takes We're so far away, no one likes to come way out here to
- 19:02check on us and Marl. It's horrible here, and they get away with
- 19:04it because I know her, I know him, I'm related to her.
- 19:08The whole chain of commanded related to each other, education, all the way
- 19:12down to simple fields. And how is that possible? While I keep saying
- 19:21trying to stay, anyone can get a job here. The state of Texas
- 19:25truly need to revamp their judicial system and take a look at how they are
- 19:33running this operation. I've noticed that there's a lot of nephew tism and a
- 19:38lot of stuff going on, a lot of cover up, a lot of
- 19:41corruption, a lot of he says, she say, and it's just getting
- 19:47out of control. That it's just like imagine they're not blind, but they
- 19:53wear a blindfold. It's like they covering up their eyes to to stuff that
- 20:02is happening. And it's sad. You know, the basic human rights,
- 20:11safety, hygiene, nutrition, you know that that that's that's the you just
- 20:19consider basic stuff that they should be provided anyway. You know, that's their
- 20:23job, and they're not even doing their job. It's sad. No one
- 20:30should have to, you know, we know that individuals make mistakes. No
- 20:36one is perfect, No one is perfect. And there are a lot of
- 20:38people that it's free in the free world that should be incarcerated, but they
- 20:44slipped through. They didn't get incarcerated, or they found fable however they did,
- 20:49but they didn't get there, so they should be lucky. But the
- 20:53ones that did, there's no reason to treat them. They should be able
- 20:59to do their time, to be rehabilitated, to learn from their mistake,
- 21:03to be able to grow, and to be able to help somebody else move
- 21:07forward to not have to go through it. But the State of Texas don't
- 21:11even offer you guys that opportunity. They don't offer you any type of rehab
- 21:15programs, and they're not making it better by not even staffing the place.
- 21:21And I keep saying, and I'm not gonna let it go. They're gonna
- 21:25State of Texas probably gonna get tired of me. They probably gonna ban me
- 21:26from coming to Texas. They probably not gonna want me to come when I
- 21:30do come. But until they correct some of this stuff, I'm gonna continue
- 21:34to ask the Department of Justice in the FBI to get involved because they need
- 21:40to get involved. And if they need to take over these facilities, some
- 21:42of them need to be shut down, whatever need to be done. They
- 21:45need to make sure that those that are incarcerated are being taken care of,
- 21:52that they're not losing their lives. Because I hear suicide ratings on my on
- 21:57the rise, I'm hearing that some of these so called suicides are not suicides
- 22:03but homicides that are being covered up by the guards. And why is these
- 22:08incidents not being reported? You know, we don't hear I'm hearing these things
- 22:15from inmates, but we don't hear it in the public. And that's another
- 22:19reason why I'm doing a lot of these interviews, giving you guys a voice,
- 22:26giving you an opportunity to share, because a lot of the things that
- 22:29you guys are sharing, we don't hear hear it in the public because by
- 22:33the time we talk to the Unbuzztment, we talked to Brian the Collier,
- 22:37and talk to all these so called representatives, they all want to give you
- 22:41the other side of the long version of the short version of around the corner
- 22:47and up the hill and back down to the valley and all that, and
- 22:51they still haven't got to the point, and things are still not being addressed.
- 22:56But I'm telling you, I don't know how I got involved. He's
- 23:00a nord there, but I'm involved and I can't let it go now.
- 23:04And until I see change, I'll be on it. I am the change
- 23:08that I desire to see in this world, not just something that I throw
- 23:11around, not just words that I put out there. I am a person
- 23:18of action, and I allow my actions to speak. I can't sit by
- 23:22and watch. You know, there's a scripture in the Bible that said,
- 23:26once you come into the knowledge, you are accountable for that. So now
- 23:30that I see this, and now that I know that this is happening,
- 23:34then I have to be a voice and I can't allow it to happen in
- 23:37my presence, so not on my watch. So every time I see something,
- 23:41I'm writing about it, I'm reporting about it, and if individuals don't
- 23:45like it, then they don't have to be a part of the things that
- 23:47I'm doing. Because I'm for justice, I'm for human rights, I'm for
- 23:52what's right, and corruption has taken over three to four year year, three
- 24:00to four decades, not years, but decades. You talk about ten thirty,
- 24:06forty years, four years. You got everybody that I've talked to,
- 24:11the average interview, the average person that's been in prison is twenty years.
- 24:18And then you talk about people that's been in thirty years and forty years.
- 24:22Now, that's unacceptable. These people don't spend most of their lives in prison,
- 24:27and they won't give them a second chance. These people are not gone
- 24:32to offend again when they spent all day life in prison. Do you think
- 24:36they're gonna offend again to go back to a place where they've been done wrong
- 24:41for over twenty thirty years, and half of them been placed in these places
- 24:47wrongfully. It's sad. The state of Texas have felled their citizens and the
- 24:56world is watching, y'all. And I'm gonna say it again. All these
- 25:03elected officials that's that's sitting on their behind and doing on nothing. They're sitting
- 25:10on their hands, twiddling their thumbs, playing with their nose. Y'all need
- 25:15to do your jobs. Y'all need to make sure that these laws that are
- 25:19in place are being upheld and hold these people accountable. You got lawyers and
- 25:26judges. How can these judges sit on judgments and hold them until they expire,
- 25:30until it's almost time for them to run out, and then they dismiss
- 25:33them, and then they don't tell you that they dismissed. How can they
- 25:37do that? How can they lose records? Yeah, we're putting y'all own
- 25:44blasts all those juvenile records that's been lost and destroyed. That's why I'm telling
- 25:51every juvenile that I know, call for your records, get your certified records
- 25:55from your from your clerk court, your juvenile corker court. Get your certified
- 26:00records. They gotta produce your records. Demand that they produce your records.
- 26:04Everybody demanded. Get your family members involved. Like Tamika said, this is
- 26:11coming from somebody on the inside, someone behind prison. Why family get involved.
- 26:18Your loved one needs you, They need you on the outside standing up
- 26:22and speaking up for them, because when they think that you don't have nobody
- 26:26on the outside, they take advantage. I've watched it too many times since
- 26:32the short time that I've been working with these individuals. The last year and
- 26:36a half i've been working with these individuals. I've seen what they'll do.
- 26:41I see how they manipulate the phone system. I see how they do the
- 26:44mail system. I see how they do. But they're not gonna stop me.
- 26:48See one thing that they they just don't understand. I've been through the
- 26:53storm, I've been through the fire. See I didn't understand why I was
- 26:57going through so much as I was growing up. But I see now because
- 27:00it's not a whole lot that I've not been through, so I understand.
- 27:06Ain't nothing that they can do to me that's gonna throw me off track,
- 27:08that's gonna deter me from what I'm doing. But I'm just, I just
- 27:15I can't believe a lot of this stuff. Just hearing you, the conversations
- 27:22that we've had, the interactions that we've had, my heart goes out to
- 27:27you. I knew that during this holiday season that individuals would feel hopeless,
- 27:37that they may feel lonely, disappointed, despair, or whatever the situation may
- 27:45be. They may be battling depression, they may be going through grief,
- 27:48whatever the situation may be. I got with twenty amazing queens and they decided
- 27:55to see a poetry affirmation letters, just words of incouragement from our heart and
- 28:02our souls to you, guys. I hope that you enjoyed this book.
- 28:08This book was prepared with you and mind and those queens that you are incarcerated
- 28:15with, because we want you to know that you are not forgotten, that
- 28:18you are loved, that we care about you, We are praying for you,
- 28:22We're lifting you up, and know that in due time, everything that
- 28:27is done in the dark shall come to the light. I definitely want to
- 28:32thank you for your leadership because you talk about fifteen and having to grow up
- 28:37inside a prison system, having to grow up and not being given the guidance
- 28:45in the direction, But you are a leader. See, sometime we don't
- 28:48understand why we're put in positions and while we have to go through some things,
- 28:55but trust me, it all is gonna be for your good when it's
- 28:59our all said and done, and you're gonna be able to look back and
- 29:03you're gonna be able to tell people how you made it. So you hang
- 29:07on in now with my sister, and you stay encouraged, and you keep
- 29:11reporting and let me know what is going on. And I'm gonna keep being
- 29:15a light on the outside to that dark place until light begin to show,
- 29:22and then and keep and change begin to sprout up, because it has to
- 29:26come. Because when you do different, different things happen. See, we
- 29:30can't keep doing the same thing and expect change. So we're doing some different
- 29:34things and change is about the come. So you just hold on because your
- 29:40help is here. Well, I thank you so much for having me on
- 29:48your show, and thank you for all that you do. They have support
- 29:52a second lookers in prison if that could get passed, and they can pass
- 29:56that bill for the second look as the juveniles, and I'm the older people,
- 30:00the old school. They're doing as much time as I am for less
- 30:04than the crime that I committee. I understand what I did was wrong.
- 30:08I was a juvenile, I was young. I was this guided following the
- 30:14wrong crowd. I'm more mature now, I would not come meet another crime.
- 30:18I know I want because I actually appreciate my life. I know what
- 30:23I have. I didn't know what I had as a child because I thought
- 30:26like a child. But then in here I've had enough time to go up
- 30:30in maturity. I'm on the right hand and I'm on the path to change.
- 30:36I just like to thank you for having me on your show. All
- 30:38the support that you give and offer us. It's amazing and we do need
- 30:42it on this inside. Thank you for being our voice, because we really
- 30:45and truly did not have one, but thank you for making that possible.
- 30:49Well, thank you, and thank you for coming on and being transparent again.
- 30:55I'm gonna be sharing this and and bringing much attention as I can as
- 31:00possible. Those living conditions are horrible. Food is horrible, and these women
- 31:08shouldn't have to live like that. They are denied personal hygienes. They're denied
- 31:15simple the simple human rights, the simple things that they need to live.
- 31:23They're denied on a constant basis. They're not given the opportunity to rehabilitate,
- 31:29and that is the norm in the State of Texas. I look at State
- 31:33of Texas against a lot of the other states. I look at the crime
- 31:38times that were committed, and if these same crimes have been committed in another
- 31:42state, the punishment would have been different. People would be home, they
- 31:48would have the opportunity to be home, they will have the opportunity to be
- 31:52on probation, they would have the opportunity to have time served, different circumstances.
- 31:57But the state of Texas, I look at their pattern. They are
- 32:02one of the highest stakes when it comes to exonerations and execution. I mean
- 32:10that's how they are one, two or three, I can't remember, but
- 32:15they're high that there. They rank high in that. But don't don't best
- 32:22with Big Texas is what they talk about, because they're corrupt and they'll take
- 32:28you down. So I want to encourage you guys to follow this platform that
- 32:36support the things that I do. Y'all share these riels, share these videos,
- 32:42share the blog. Share this because what's happening in Texas could be happening
- 32:46in a lot of other places. We hear about the things that's going on
- 32:51in the state of Alabama. How these individuals have been working and and they're
- 32:55allowed to go out and work in restaurants like Burger King, McDonald's and Wendy's
- 33:02work regular jobs like us in the real world, make money and then the
- 33:07state get their money. How is that possible? Modern day slavery. It
- 33:13needs to stop. It needs to stop a lot of the underhanded stuff that
- 33:19is going on in these prison systems that we don't know about, but it's
- 33:24surely coming to the light. And I want you guys to do your research,
- 33:30stay involved in what's going on in your community. Really look at these
- 33:35people that you are electing into office and understand that these people have that they
- 33:40have the power to make decisions that's concerning your life and your loved ones.
- 33:46Y'all. We can neglect these people, but we can get these people out
- 33:50of offices not doing what they need to be doing. You look at that
- 33:53governor in Texas. That man has been running that state for how long and
- 33:58they've been corrupt for y'all. It's time for change, and change is only
- 34:04gonna come if you decide that you want to see change. Well, y'all,
- 34:09I want to thank y'all for tuning in tonight to another episode of the
