- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. Hi everyone. It is so good to be here again. Lucas: We have been talking a lot about food lately. We talked about bread and cheese. Luna: Right. And we talked about ordering at a restaurant. Lucas: Today we are going to stay in the kitchen. But we are going to cook. Luna: I love cooking. But my Dutch cooking vocabulary is very small. Lucas: That is okay. We will build it up slowly. Just like a good sauce. Luna: Okay. Where do we start? Do we chop first? Lucas: Actually, before you chop, you often need to peel something. Especially potatoes. Luna: Ah. Potatoes. Yes. That makes sense. Lucas: Let's look at our first phrase. It is simple. It is 'Ik schil de aardappel'. Luna: 'Ik schil de aardappel'. What does that mean? Lucas: It means 'I peel the potato'. Let's break it down. 'Ik' means 'I'. Luna: Yes. 'Ik'. I know that one. Lucas: Good. Then 'schil'. This is the verb. It means 'to peel'. Luna: 'Schil'. To peel. Okay. That sounds like 'shell'. Like a shell on a nut. Lucas: Exactly. A nice connection. Then 'de aardappel'. That is 'the potato'. Luna: 'De aardappel'. Potato. Got it. Lucas: So let's say the whole phrase together. Slowly. 'Ik schil de aardappel'. Luna: 'Ik schil de aardappel'. I peel the potato. Lucas: Perfect. Now try it faster. Normal speed. Luna: 'Ik schil de aardappel'. I peel the potato. Lucas: Excellent. Imagine you are holding a potato and a peeler. You are doing it. Luna: I am peeling the potato. Oh, it is slippery. Watch out. Lucas: Careful. Don't drop it. So now the potato is peeled. What next? Luna: Now I need to cut it. Or maybe an onion? Onions are common too. Lucas: Yes. Onions are very common in Dutch cooking. Let's learn that verb. Luna: What is the word for cutting or slicing? Lucas: The verb is 'snijden'. But when I do it, it becomes 'Ik snijd'. Luna: 'Ik snijd'. I cut. Okay. Lucas: Right. And what are we cutting? An onion. 'De ui'. Luna: 'De ui'. The onion. I remember 'ui' from the supermarket episodes. Lucas: Good memory. So the full phrase is 'Ik snijd de ui'. Luna: 'Ik snijd de ui'. I cut the onion. Lucas: Let's repeat that. Slowly. 'Ik snijd de ui'. Luna: 'Ik snijd de ui'. I cut the onion. Lucas: Now normal speed. Go. Luna: 'Ik snijd de ui'. I cut the onion. Lucas: Very good. Try not to cry. Onions can make you cry. Luna: Oh no. My eyes are watering already. But I did it right. Lucas: You did. Now we have peeled potatoes and cut onions. What do we do with them? Luna: We put them in a pot. We need hot water. Lucas: Yes. So we need to boil the water. The verb for boil is 'koken'. Luna: 'Koken'. To boil. Or to cook generally? Lucas: It means both. But here we are specific. We say 'Ik kook het water'. Luna: 'Ik kook het water'. I boil the water. Lucas: Let's practice. Slowly. 'Ik kook het water'. Luna: 'Ik kook het water'. I boil the water. Lucas: Normal speed. Luna: 'Ik kook het water'. I boil the water. Lucas: Great. The water is boiling. Steam is rising. It looks nice. Luna: It smells good. Like a warm kitchen. What do we add now? Lucas: Maybe we are making a sauce. Or maybe we just stir the vegetables. Luna: Stirring is important. Otherwise it burns. Lucas: True. The verb for stir is 'roeren'. When I do it, it is 'Ik roer'. Luna: 'Ik roer'. I stir. Okay. Lucas: And what are we stirring? Usually a sauce. 'De saus'. Luna: 'De saus'. The sauce. Like gravy or tomato sauce? Lucas: Yes. Any kind of sauce. So the phrase is 'Ik roer de saus'. Luna: 'Ik roer de saus'. I stir the sauce. Lucas: Let's say it. Slowly. 'Ik roer de saus'. Luna: 'Ik roer de saus'. I stir the sauce. Lucas: Normal speed. Go. Luna: 'Ik roer de saus'. I stir the sauce. Lucas: Wonderful. You are getting the rhythm. Peel, cut, boil, stir. Luna: Peel the potato. Cut the onion. Boil the water. Stir the sauce. Lucas: Exactly. Let's review them all quickly. First one? Luna: 'Ik schil de aardappel'. I peel the potato. Lucas: Second? Luna: 'Ik snijd de ui'. I cut the onion. Lucas: Third? Luna: 'Ik kook het water'. I boil the water. Lucas: And the last one? Luna: 'Ik roer de saus'. I stir the sauce. Lucas: Perfect. You remembered every single phrase. Luna: It felt easy because we broke it down step by step. Lucas: That is the key. Small steps. One verb at a time. Luna: I feel like I could actually cook dinner now. In Dutch. Lucas: I believe you. You might burn the sauce though. Luna: Hey. I said I would stir it. I didn't say I would walk away. Lucas: Fair point. Just keep watching the pot. Luna: Always. Thank you, Lucas. This was helpful. Lucas: Thank you, Luna. And thank you to our listeners. Luna: If you are enjoying these lessons, please consider supporting us. Lucas: We don't have ads. We rely on people who want this show to exist. Luna: A small group supports us monthly. It helps cover the costs. Lucas: If you can help, go to buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Any amount helps keep the episodes coming. No pressure at all. Lucas: Just if you feel like it. Now, let's wrap up. Luna: Remember the four phrases. Peel, cut, boil, stir. Lucas: Say them out loud while you cook tonight. Even if it is just pasta. Luna: I will practice. 'Ik kook het water' for sure. Lucas: See you next time. Bye for now. Luna: Bye everyone. Happy cooking.
