Latest / That Car Show / Jeff Bezos’s Key Party
Transcript
- 0:00You'll get there one day, Ryan. I believe in you.
- 0:02This week, Lindsay doesn't miss a beat with dispatches from both
- 0:06air, water and the exclusive Slate truck launch.
- 0:10The end discovers that he's not really a Bronco Raptor guy,
- 0:13despite his hairy chest and tough guy demeanor.
- 0:16I get Bougie and Boulder with the fuel fed set and we debate
- 0:19the car we choose from Hell's own rental counter.
- 0:23It's that car show. The kids are all right, and we
- 0:25are coming for your forerunners, Eli.
- 0:29All right, well, welcome to this week's episode of that car show.
- 0:32The Gang is All Here, but I wanted to start off by
- 0:35introducing a phrase and a little bit of information.
- 0:39In the UK we have a phrase called parish notices.
- 0:41What does that mean? Well, that means it's a
- 0:43traditional British phrase that's often used to make a few
- 0:46announcements before things start.
- 0:48So in British tradition, I'm going to start with some parish
- 0:52notices and the very first one, yeah, you guys will be using it
- 0:56in all the meetings that you go to and it'll be like, what's
- 0:58this, become more British it? Beats housekeeping.
- 1:02Yeah, it does. It does.
- 1:02I love it. All right, let's hear it.
- 1:05So yeah, I want to hear why you've used it.
- 1:08So firstly, on a serious note, on the 28th of April, the
- 1:15legendary engine builder Ed Pink passed away and we just wanted
- 1:19to send our respects. I don't think any of us actually
- 1:22knew Ed himself, but we were familiar with his work.
- 1:26We were aware that he had a, a reputation and was known as the
- 1:31old master. I think anyone in life, if you
- 1:33get a reputation, you get some sort of, you know, some sort of
- 1:37recognition as being called the old master.
- 1:39You know that you've, you've really kind of hit your craft
- 1:42and, and made it. We didn't know him, but we did
- 1:47know the impact of his work. You know, he built engines for
- 1:51IndyCar, for Porsche, some of the Kramer engines, Interscope
- 1:56engines, and more recently he worked on the Singer, the Singer
- 2:01DLS. Is that right?
- 2:03Let's get that phrase, the Emory cars, the Emory cars.
- 2:07So we send our respects to his family.
- 2:11He also passed away at the age of 94.
- 2:12So, you know, as we would say in England, a fantastic innings
- 2:16referring to cricket. So so that was the first one,
- 2:20the second parish notice and I'm going to wear a dog collar next
- 2:23week. I think is that we had a lot of
- 2:27people on the social medias either give us feedback.
- 2:31They shared some of our posts and I just wanted everyone to
- 2:35know that that didn't go unnoticed.
- 2:36We're incredibly grateful of everyone who, you know, has
- 2:39shown, you know, real interest in this podcast really early on.
- 2:42So thank you. Please keep going, please, you
- 2:44know, continue to subscribe and add comments, reviews, all that
- 2:47sort of stuff really helps us. But thank you for everyone so
- 2:49far, right? This is where I say Amen.
- 2:52Yes, it is and I wanted to say specific thank you to my friend
- 2:55Wendy, who's her Instagram is Brit Porsche girl.
- 2:58She has been an immediate early supporter and just so genuine
- 3:03and I think friend of the show Tori Alonso as well, like
- 3:07they've, they've both been immediately on board and genuine
- 3:10and very helpful and we appreciate it.
- 3:13So you said Wendy, Yes. So Wendy's going to get the
- 3:16parish notices straight away without any.
- 3:19Right, exactly. And Wendy lives in Sheffield.
- 3:23That's perfect. They make watches up there.
- 3:27We've heard, I mean, I think we know a guy, right?
- 3:29By proxy. So last week was a big week in
- 3:34the car world and in particular a new manufacturer came to the
- 3:38table and they brought potentially what is going to be
- 3:41one of the most revolutionary cars to market to awareness.
- 3:46And we were lucky enough that Lindsay was there on site, got
- 3:50an invite to the the press launch.
- 3:52So, Lindsay, tell us all about Slate Automotive.
- 3:55So Slate Automotive, they had their reveal on Thursday night.
- 4:00It was at the Long Beach Airport in one of the warehouses there.
- 4:04And it was very, you know, cloak and dagger.
- 4:07You had to respond with a password to RSVP you.
- 4:11Didn't even tell us for the record.
- 4:14I didn't tell anybody. I had my dear friend Derek
- 4:18Powell. Everybody knows Derek Powell.
- 4:20I feel like there needs to be a bell.
- 4:22Hey, Derek. When we say Derek Powell, so
- 4:25Derek and I knew that we were going.
- 4:28He was the only person that I even acknowledged that I was
- 4:30going to everybody else found out after.
- 4:33So anyway, thrilled to be there. Thrilled to be included.
- 4:37Our friend Kat Savile who was at the Peterson included me.
- 4:40She was a Tesla. Now she's at Slate and so they
- 4:44had their several of their executives, the head of design,
- 4:48Tisha Snyder, Jeremy Snyder, who's the CCO and Tisha, I don't
- 4:55know that that's her last name now that I think about it,
- 4:57because they're not related, so they may have the same last
- 5:00name. And I didn't pick up on it, so I
- 5:02apologize if that's not the right name, but she's the head
- 5:04of design. And it was really fun to see a
- 5:06woman speaking. And then their CEO is a woman,
- 5:09Chris Barman, and they all spoke about the company and the
- 5:13mission and that they want to bring an EV option to the under
- 5:2025,000 range of the market because there's a lot of people
- 5:23that would be interested. But so far, EVs have been
- 5:26inaccessible to them simply because of the cost.
- 5:29And so it's under 25,000 after government rebates.
- 5:32The trucks are all assembled in the US and they have 4 different
- 5:36variations. They have a single cab.
- 5:38It's like a short bed pickup truck, but then you can either
- 5:42configure it and have Slate assemble it the way that you
- 5:44want it, or you can buy the pickup truck itself and buy the
- 5:47parts and put it together yourself also, which is an
- 5:50interesting concept. Will that still be under
- 5:52warranty? So that was part of the
- 5:54discussion afterwards with several of my friends who are
- 5:59automotive journalists in LA was if you have people that are
- 6:02installing it themselves, how does that impact or does it
- 6:05impact, can you still claim they have a five star crash rating?
- 6:09Like if if you're not the one installing it, you know, where
- 6:12does it change to? Well, this was an aftermarket
- 6:15part. So that's one of the early
- 6:18stage, kind of like, OK, there's definitely some questions that
- 6:22people have, but in general, I think everybody loves the idea
- 6:26of expanding the accessibility of EVs.
- 6:30And this one is particularly cool because it's so versatile.
- 6:34There's the single cab pickup truck, then you can add a shell
- 6:37on the back and a second row seat and it makes it kind of a
- 6:39new Bronco two row SUV, very similar.
- 6:43Yes, I said Bronco. What are we 3 minutes in and
- 6:46I've already said this week, yeah.
- 6:49So I'll be looking out. Then they have another one where
- 6:53you can add a second row seat and basically roll bars.
- 6:56So it makes it kind of Wrangler esque or you know, new Bronco
- 6:59where they make the over landing type.
- 7:03Oh, we have a new buzzer this week, I think.
- 7:06And then the last one reminded me of either the big Range Rover
- 7:11or Range Rover Sport because it has a cab on the back, but it's
- 7:13sloping. So it's another two row SUV, but
- 7:17the lines are a little more luxury SUV.
- 7:19So there's all different configurations you can add, you
- 7:23know, different levels of trim. You can buy a design A wrap, you
- 7:27can have Slate apply it, you can do it yourself.
- 7:30It's a modular sort of taken to the.
- 7:32Very modular, yeah. And so you can design it to fit
- 7:35your life and what you need. So one of the things that they
- 7:38talked about is that, you know, the way they describe it is that
- 7:41they're built in the US, assembled in the US.
- 7:45And not just the US, but Indiana.
- 7:47That's like the extra US, right? Extra America.
- 7:50Ultra Ultra America. Exactly.
- 7:53So. They say that they are
- 7:55manufactured here. One of the points of discussion
- 7:58afterwards among the people in attendance was some of the
- 8:01parts. The US has not had the
- 8:03capability to actually make those parts in 30 years.
- 8:06Yeah, but it's anything, right? Right, exactly.
- 8:09So it's a little bit semantics because they are being assembled
- 8:12here, which is super cool. And you know that like I love to
- 8:15see that because obviously hopefully it helps create jobs
- 8:18and all of that. I think that's I think that's
- 8:20only positive. So it's more like what's, I
- 8:23guess you can parse out what your definition of manufactured
- 8:26versus assembled. And then, yeah, I mean,
- 8:31definitely some early stage questions.
- 8:33But their team, I mean, listening to them was really
- 8:35inspiring. They all have like several of
- 8:39the executives and a lot of the team have EV experience,
- 8:42especially at Tesla. So they've been in the space for
- 8:44a long time. They've seen an organization
- 8:47like that grow, and I think they're applying everything
- 8:50they've learned, you know, what to do and what not to do.
- 8:53And they just really seemed excited to bring this to the
- 8:58market. And it was really, really well
- 9:01done. The excitement, you know,
- 9:04everybody was very palpable. Some people had seen spy shots.
- 9:08They had done a, they dropped one in Venice, CA the week
- 9:12before. And again, you know, I'm not
- 9:14telling anybody. So I'm like, wait a minute,
- 9:16let's go. So I sent it to Derek and I'm
- 9:17like, is this what I think it is?
- 9:19What's going on here? How big is this thing?
- 9:22Like what is this? It's?
- 9:23Not big like it's. It's tiny.
- 9:26Because it I'm sort of under the impression that's the size of
- 9:29like one of the old school Ford Rangers or something, if not the
- 9:32new one, I think, but a small I. Think it's in between.
- 9:36It's a it's like a light truck size.
- 9:38Yeah, OK. Like a Is it Suzuki chimney the
- 9:42new one? Not that small, right?
- 9:44It's not that small, but it's definitely it's it's yeah, it's
- 9:49light truck class. Like it's not a full size pickup
- 9:52truck. And I think that is going to be,
- 9:55I think that's going to help because it may have a broader
- 9:57audience. Not everybody wants to drive a
- 9:59full size pickup truck, you know, or doesn't need it
- 10:01necessarily. Dan, can you ask our off camera
- 10:04assistant when the last car available in the US was where
- 10:08you you could opt for roll windows, roll down windows
- 10:12versus electric windows? Because I believe that you can
- 10:16actually get rolled out in windows.
- 10:17That's how functional this. Is on.
- 10:20The right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:22I don't remember. Yeah, because like this is very
- 10:26much a form follows function vehicle probably more than just
- 10:30about anything else we've seen. I think we have a lot of
- 10:32vehicles that are designed to look that way, right?
- 10:35But this really is, I wouldn't say it's the prettiest thing in
- 10:38the world, but I kind of love it for that.
- 10:41Right, it's sort of it's like it's so functional, it's cute
- 10:44and it's like and the size it's very adorable and it's like the
- 10:48little engine that could because it's like I'm here and I'm super
- 10:51capable. What's not to love?
- 10:53And they it was, they had a great swag bag at the event and
- 10:59we got. Was in this swag bag.
- 11:00Well, we got. But those of us who weren't it.
- 11:03That was part of the mystique, they said in the RSVP forum.
- 11:06They said if we were to surprise you with something with like,
- 11:11your name or whatever, what would you put on it and what
- 11:13size are you? So we got jackets with whatever
- 11:17name or phrase or whatever you wanted embroidered on them.
- 11:20And then we got slate hats and then a really fun little
- 11:23activity book, which my junior car reviewer immediately took.
- 11:27And then, yeah. And just there were a lot of,
- 11:32you know, who's who of LA Automotive Media, Mark Vaughn,
- 11:35who does a radio show and he's running for Auto Week.
- 11:37And then Derek Powell, you know, obviously and John and Mira
- 11:41Childenko and Jeff Glucker of Universe and Sean Winograd from
- 11:47Carn Driver and I think Monder trend maybe and Cat.
- 11:50And then, yeah. Fantastic, So.
- 11:53What did you learn, Dan? Yeah, I kind of feel like we
- 11:55should be paying our researchers and then we're not at the
- 11:57minute. So, so let's let's maybe all
- 12:00chip together and and tip them a little bit.
- 12:02You won't believe the last time. Let's just start with a year.
- 12:07So the last car you could buy with roll down windows.
- 12:10The car stopped selling in 2023. So up to 2023 you could still
- 12:14buy a car with roll down windows.
- 12:16It's a car versus a light truck. Well, I mean, it's a Wrangler
- 12:19Sport, so it's both, right? OK, OK.
- 12:22OK, that's yeah, that makes. Sense, Yeah, OK, interesting.
- 12:26OK, so. You could buy a new car 2023
- 12:29brand new. Yeah, and an honourable mention
- 12:33to the Chevrolet Spark. The base LS trim had manual
- 12:39windows, but was discontinued in 2022.
- 12:41Have either of you driven a Chevy Spark?
- 12:43I have not have you? And those, those stuck around
- 12:46way too long. 2022 they were Would you say I?
- 12:49Think I would rather walk. Well, no, I that's it.
- 12:53That's I think that is a a viable alternative if you've
- 12:57ever they're tiny, if you've ever been in a Lotus Elise, if
- 13:01you're driving, your shoulder will be next to the shoulder of
- 13:04of your passenger. And that's the only other car
- 13:06that have ever driven had that experience well.
- 13:09Isn't that what they said about the Gordon Murray car though?
- 13:11That like they when Dario was driving it like I know Johnny
- 13:16said, I thought he had to put his arm around Dario almost to
- 13:19sit in the passenger seat. Well.
- 13:20That's different. Lindsay Gordon Murray Car I'll
- 13:25do whatever. I'll sit in someone's lap at the
- 13:28Gordon Murray car, but a Chevy Spark?
- 13:30Right. Did you ever think you hear a
- 13:32Chevy Spark and a Gordon Murray? Car.
- 13:35Not at all. Not at all.
- 13:37So, yeah, it was great that you were there, Lindsay.
- 13:39And yeah, it's cool. It was cool to to be, you know,
- 13:42at the forefront of the action. Happy.
- 13:44To represent the team, right? I do have more questions though
- 13:47if I may. This is a rear wheel drive only
- 13:50vehicle, at least at first. Or can you opt in a front like
- 13:54an all-wheel drive module or? So they didn't go into that much
- 13:58detail at the launch, but I yeah, so I don't know about that
- 14:03specifically. Because I'm thinking, you know,
- 14:05rear wheel drive electric truck Donuts, right?
- 14:09What's not to love? Yeah.
- 14:10You know, and anything about it where you think they missed the
- 14:15mark, like was it I, I'm shocked that they kept it the secret
- 14:19that they did. Really, for as long as they did.
- 14:21Really remarkable because I know it was something certain people
- 14:24have known about it for years at this.
- 14:26Point. Yeah, so.
- 14:28Well, no, I just, I mean, yes, you're absolutely right.
- 14:32That's exactly correct. No, I think, I think as they
- 14:39start to roll out that may those types of things, you might go,
- 14:43oh, they could have done that differently.
- 14:44But at least for right now, because it is still, it's not a
- 14:48concept like they will be building them, but because it's
- 14:51not live yet, everything so far seems like they're like it's
- 14:58aligned with what they are trying to deliver.
- 15:01And hell of timing with the tariffs, Jeff Bezos.
- 15:05Yeah, it's. Probably a conversation there
- 15:07for a. Few the man can build a rocket
- 15:10and launch a car, huh? And that's political as we're
- 15:13going to get. It reminds me like if if IKEA
- 15:18made cars. Yeah, it's that idea.
- 15:20It was like you, you take only what you need and you can.
- 15:24Basically. Heavily configurable to whatever
- 15:27your purpose is. I mean, that part of it is
- 15:30incredible because there's so many people that have different
- 15:33needs and jobs and to find something that you can customize
- 15:37exactly for what you want, That's the only vehicle like
- 15:40that new right now without having to do a bunch of work.
- 15:43I think they're great. I'd love to have them as a third
- 15:45car, go to the hardware store and all that kind of stuff.
- 15:47You don't, you know, I don't want to throw a bag of mulch
- 15:49into the Porsche or the Pole Star, but you know.
- 15:51Yeah, yeah. Well, and I just.
- 15:52Ran the slate. We talked so much about, you
- 15:55know, re bodying when Logan was on and how much that happened.
- 15:58And I'm sure you could do a version of re bodying with the
- 16:04slate like so. This might be the new coach,
- 16:06Bill. Wouldn't even have to be a
- 16:07truck, right? No, like you could decide for
- 16:11whatever reason I don't need the pickup truck right now or maybe
- 16:14go back and forth. Yeah, and that would mean that
- 16:16Ryan would have to update his article about convertible
- 16:20electrics, maybe. The master of the of the Segway.
- 16:23There we go. I got it in there.
- 16:25Are we getting? Is it $10 per?
- 16:28I mentioned the fact that he's a published writer.
- 16:30Is that how this is going to work?
- 16:31Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah. Make it if you if you speak it,
- 16:33it's so right. Here we go.
- 16:35I. Think that works?
- 16:36That works. Manifesting Baby.
- 16:39Now in Denver, I think there was a launch, is that right, Ryan?
- 16:43You attended the launch of it was a kick off?
- 16:48Was it fuel fed kick off? Oh yeah, yeah, good link.
- 16:54I then go bad link, right. I love Colorado.
- 16:57Not a whole lot of new car, you know, launches here though
- 17:01apparently I I know Slate Motors was like Denver, LA.
- 17:04Denver, LA. Hotly contested debate about.
- 17:09Yeah, You know how much I love Fuel Fed and Fuel Feds is is is
- 17:13this group that I, I've been a member of since I was the very
- 17:15beginning back in Chicago. And now they have a an arm down
- 17:19in Fort Lauderdale. And then Mike Burroughs started
- 17:21up fuel fed Boulder out here a few years ago.
- 17:25And for for a group that's still kind of under the radar, it was
- 17:30a huge, huge turn out. We had a beautiful day.
- 17:34I think this was the first year that they did this with the
- 17:36blessing of the city, right? Lesson learned.
- 17:40If you want to do something, don't ask for permission, right?
- 17:43If you want to build that addition to your house, you
- 17:45start building and then you, well, now we're building it.
- 17:47You can't tell us to stop now. And that's kind of what they
- 17:49did, right? Obviously, this is a much more
- 17:52benign, sort of, you know, benefit beneficial sort of
- 17:55event. But but yeah, sure enough, they,
- 17:57they, they had the official barricades and, and a couple
- 18:01streets open much more room. And the cars that show up are,
- 18:04are just incredible. Obviously there's some good,
- 18:08some good money in Boulder, right.
- 18:10But also the enthusiast scene is, is, is incredible.
- 18:13And, and, and just, it's always, it's always amazing what rolls
- 18:16up and just seeing, you know, all the, the friends and, and
- 18:20folks you haven't seen all winter.
- 18:22It was just great. It was great.
- 18:24I I only wished I'd had stickers to hand out for that car show.
- 18:28This didn't arrive till today. If you want one slide into our
- 18:32DMS, I guess, and we will send some off or just find us at the
- 18:37next fuel fed event or Crystal Cove or exotics right in in
- 18:44Seattle. So, but to bring it back to fuel
- 18:46fed, just a great event if you're in Colorado.
- 18:48I mean, it's worth the drive. It's I think once a month now
- 18:52through fall on Pearl Street and in Boulder.
- 18:56And it was just, I mean, just fantastic.
- 18:58There was a, a Testarossa next to a TR, right, a 512 TR.
- 19:02So I've never been able to sort of compare and contrast, you
- 19:06know, and especially in real life.
- 19:08With your own? Yeah, in person.
- 19:10Yeah, yeah, it's and you realize, Oh yeah, there's some
- 19:12significant differences, right? Like the the engine cover in the
- 19:16back is painted black on the 512 TR and it's also about half the
- 19:19height. You don't pick up on that stuff.
- 19:21Scene 1. You know in isolation, right?
- 19:23The lights at the front, the lights are different, aren't
- 19:25they? That's the lights are different
- 19:27pop up to glass. Perspective.
- 19:29Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then there was what was that
- 19:31final 512 TR that had the twist wheels and everything.
- 19:34It was the really special one. I I don't know what that.
- 19:36Was it? Was the M that's what it was.
- 19:39That's what it was. So maybe next fuel fed there
- 19:42will be one of those and you can see them all, but just stuff you
- 19:44just don't see anywhere else. You know, got a buddy who
- 19:48brought his his Lotus Elite, right?
- 19:51Just I don't know that's where you'll see an Ariel Adam or, you
- 19:55know, a random vintage Bugatti. You know, may or may not be
- 19:58drifted for Logan, but you know, it's just.
- 20:02It's an elite group. You know, you know, it's one of
- 20:06the special events that hasn't been commercialized, right?
- 20:09You know, it's, it's, you know, it's still fun.
- 20:13You know, it's a mature group. No one's ripping out of the, you
- 20:15know, the lot. At the end of the day, it's just
- 20:18it's just a great group of like minded people there.
- 20:21There are people, they're that car show people, right?
- 20:23If you if you follow so. Speaking of kudos car show
- 20:26people, you also bumped into a friend of Lindsay and mine,
- 20:30right? Oh yeah?
- 20:32Well, a couple of them, but I think you're referring to Eric.
- 20:36Eric, right? Eric from Dream Drives for Kids.
- 20:39He had the shirt on and everything and he recognized me.
- 20:43I put two and two together with the shirt and he and his wife is
- 20:47Amity. Is Amity I think.
- 20:49Yeah, lovely people. Really, really cool people.
- 20:51Yeah, I love. That Yeah, yeah.
- 20:53It's such a small world sometimes, and it.
- 20:55Really is. They went on and on about you,
- 20:58Dan and, and, and how much you've helped them with their
- 21:00fundraising and all that. You're too modest.
- 21:02So, well, I didn't even know the half of that.
- 21:04But Lindsay was there as well. I think Lindsay actually was one
- 21:07of the few that bid when I was. I kept my hand in my pocket.
- 21:11Well, the funny part was there were, yeah, there were a few
- 21:14things that really kind of hit home for me.
- 21:16And, you know, especially they had the one where you could just
- 21:20bid to put together the boxes that they give the kids and get
- 21:23to go do the tours. And I had my daughter with me at
- 21:26that event, and she started getting into it.
- 21:29She's like, Mama, I want you to have this auction item.
- 21:31We got a bit. Yeah, yeah, Yeah, it was.
- 21:34Prompted some interesting discussions about fiscal
- 21:38responsibility versus charity versus, you know, what's the
- 21:41happy medium and also helping people.
- 21:43And auctions are dangerous. Well, no.
- 21:45Say it goes to a good cause. The one that really caught my
- 21:48attention was the photo shoot for your car and I bid on it and
- 21:51then I immediately got outbid, which is what you hope, right?
- 21:54Because. They're raising more money and
- 21:56but then my daughter said, no, I really want you to have it.
- 21:58And she kept trying to raise her hand.
- 22:03It's a little bit. About the actual charity
- 22:06because? You'd be the best one to do
- 22:08that, I think. So I mean, Lindsay could
- 22:10obviously do it as well, but so Eric has been very fortunate
- 22:16enough to collect a large number of fantastic cars, but he made a
- 22:21decision to do something with them as opposed to just showing
- 22:24them off the cars and coffee or, you know, taking them for
- 22:26drives. So we got in touch with local
- 22:30hospitals in his area and, and basically said if there are
- 22:33children that are on a journey of, of sickness, so, you know,
- 22:37they're either fighting something terminal or long term,
- 22:41he wanted to put a smile on their faces.
- 22:44So he would turn up with one of his supercars and take the kid
- 22:48out for the day in the supercar. And the, the, the auction item
- 22:53that we're referring to is that at the end of this experience,
- 22:56the child gets a replica of that car as something to kind of
- 23:00keep, keep them motivated, keep them thinking.
- 23:02And, you know, he's gone beyond that now.
- 23:04He's signed partnerships. We were help, we helped sort of
- 23:08sort out the partnership in Redmond, Lindsay and I.
- 23:10But there's partnerships all over the US now.
- 23:12And it's only getting bigger. They went to some Porsche racing
- 23:16at Kota with Patrick Dempsey and he's now supporting the charity.
- 23:19So yeah, dream join kids. And my friend, my friend Andrew
- 23:24Florin, who puts together the Ollie and Bob cars and coffee in
- 23:26Santa Monica, is connected with Children's Hospital in LA.
- 23:30So he and Eric are now connected.
- 23:32And we're building that. We they are building that one
- 23:34out. So that's going to be amazing.
- 23:36But it's, yeah, it reminded me, you know, listening to Eric and
- 23:41Amity talk about all the kids that they've met and, and we
- 23:43all, you know, you can imagine the impact that has not only on
- 23:47the child, but the whole family is impacted, especially if
- 23:50they're siblings too. It just changes everyone's
- 23:52lives. And it reminded me, the school
- 23:56that I've driven with up here, Performance Racing school, they
- 23:59used to take a team to Daytona and do the 24 hour circuit,
- 24:04Daytona Lamar. And so when my daughter was a
- 24:08year old, we went to the Daytona 24.
- 24:11And I remember standing there because they raised money for
- 24:13children's for Seattle Children's Hospital and the
- 24:16cardiac care unit. And it hit me, you know, I'm
- 24:19incredibly lucky that my daughter's healthy.
- 24:21But people donate. I think you, you get involved if
- 24:25you've experienced something like that with your child or if
- 24:28you realize how lucky you are that your child is healthy, you
- 24:30donate to help the families that have are dealing with these
- 24:33situations. So it's, I love the work that
- 24:36they do. Yeah.
- 24:37Can you imagine, you know, if you're a kid and you're sick
- 24:40and, and that comes into your life?
- 24:42I mean, it would just, I think it would just, it would be
- 24:45healing, right? I mean, it would be, it would
- 24:47just, it would just change everything.
- 24:49You know, it's, it's just and they're lovely people and just a
- 24:52great organization and, and yeah, so need to finally meet
- 24:56them. Yeah.
- 24:58That's more fun. Small world when it comes to
- 25:01good car people, right? That's true.
- 25:03There was some other, I think chance meetings though, over the
- 25:06last week, if I'm not mistaken. I want to hear about Air Water,
- 25:10Lindsey too. But but you ran into our pal Dan
- 25:12Mcinnis. I did.
- 25:14I was going to say there was a lot of like cross pollination,
- 25:17Pacific Northwest, California. Yeah, yeah, everybody was in the
- 25:21wrong. Yeah.
- 25:23Bermuda Triangle going yeah, don't we?
- 25:25It's. I know.
- 25:26Well, I mean, I've said it before, you know, Crystal Cove
- 25:28is my favorite spot in the whole world.
- 25:30I was very lucky to grow up there in my detective trailer on
- 25:33the beach and then. We need a theme song whenever
- 25:37that gets mentioned, right? Yeah.
- 25:40Yeah. And so, you know, I had the
- 25:43unique luck to be able to walk up the hill and cross PCH to one
- 25:49of the original cars and coffees in Southern California or one of
- 25:54the bigger ones that then went to the Ford headquarters.
- 25:56But Crystal. And so the shopping center is
- 25:59kind of that's what's left as far as places I can go there.
- 26:03And there's no formal cars and coffee there anymore.
- 26:06But it's an amazing car show any day of the week, anytime.
- 26:10And then I was there Friday afternoon and, you know, it's
- 26:13just unbelievable. There's a Super 90 like pulled
- 26:16in, and there's a Porsche Super 90 Speedster next to a like 65
- 26:21convertible Mustang and then an Urus and all kinds of stuff.
- 26:27But yes, so I got a cup of coffee and I'm walking out and I
- 26:31hear my name and I think, what's this?
- 26:33And it's Dan McGinnis, of course.
- 26:36And he was with our our friend John Nasser as well, I think
- 26:39right it. Was a whole crew.
- 26:40There were two Johns and then David Reichman, who's.
- 26:44Wonderful and so much. Fun.
- 26:46He's got a gorgeous. It was his speedster.
- 26:48I didn't know that. OK.
- 26:49But I had seen in the parking lot.
- 26:50It was so funny because Dan said, you know, we connected.
- 26:54And then he said, yeah, And she's on the podcast with Ryan.
- 26:56And everybody perked up. Well, I know, Ryan, wait a
- 27:00minute. Yeah, you're being kind.
- 27:02But it's funny because I was walking the dog here in the
- 27:05neighborhood. I guess it was probably a few
- 27:07days before that. And who did I see but John
- 27:09Nasser walking down the street? And John, you don't live
- 27:12anywhere near here. He said, well, I just, I went, I
- 27:15went to to go up to this place up the street.
- 27:16It's an ice cream shop. And he's going to walk back to
- 27:18his house. It's like 2 miles.
- 27:22It's like these guys get around, you know, that's so fun.
- 27:25Get out more. But now I love those guys.
- 27:26David's a neat guy, too. And.
- 27:28Yeah, I ended up talking to him for a bit at Auto Kennel.
- 27:32OK, the morning after Air water. Excuse me, but it was so funny
- 27:37once I saw Dan. Then I realized because I'd been
- 27:40going South on PCH coming up to Newport Coast Road or yeah,
- 27:46Newport Coast Road, which is a really fun driving Rd.
- 27:48That's where I took the Gunther Works Speedster, one of the
- 27:51first places. It's big sweeping turns and just
- 27:54amazing. Wait, we're playing that now for
- 27:56the Gunther works? I just felt like playing it,
- 27:58yeah. You got to hold it closer to the
- 28:00mic. We need the full impact.
- 28:01I have the the. Voice of the audience, you see.
- 28:04Right, like. There we go, There we go.
- 28:07Like, we get it, you got to drive the Gunther.
- 28:08Works, yeah. So anyway, I had been driving
- 28:11South on PCH and I saw the screen Porsche turn from Newport
- 28:16Coast onto PCH, but it was far enough.
- 28:18Yeah. And then as soon as I saw Dan,
- 28:20I'm like, I saw Dan like an hour ago.
- 28:23I didn't. And that guy, this car, everyone
- 28:26takes a picture of his car. I know.
- 28:28So anytime he's anywhere, I turn on Instagram, I turn on
- 28:30Instagram, I open Instagram. I guess you could flip the
- 28:33switch to Instagram. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:35And his car is everywhere, right?
- 28:37You know, he always, he always makes the Instagram reels.
- 28:40He's got 100,000 now, hasn't he? 99 just turned over 90, but
- 28:46yeah. Super.
- 28:47He's been to like Denver and back since then.
- 28:50He came, yeah. He left.
- 28:51He went back Saturday. Yeah, I think he sent.
- 28:54Me, a picture from the road right and it was 9009.
- 28:57Wow. Or I'm sorry, 90,000 and nine.
- 28:59It's not quite. So funny boobs.
- 29:02Upside down or whatever, but it's, you know, it's it's.
- 29:04Not quite a Helen. It's pretty impressive.
- 29:06Well, and Dan and I mean, that's what's so insane is that I, you
- 29:10know, my official address is Seattle, Dan's is Colorado.
- 29:14And we run into each other at Crystal Cove regularly.
- 29:17Yeah, I don't know what you do with that, but I'm.
- 29:20Some people have it figured out I think, and I'm still working
- 29:24on it myself. So another event that was taking
- 29:27place in Southern California last weekend started with a damp
- 29:31outlook, didn't it? The the air water started with
- 29:33more water. What was going on?
- 29:35Yeah, everybody was was calling it like, OK, when you know, it's
- 29:39just water, water. This time it was, it was cool in
- 29:43the morning and then it started spitting and it was like, all
- 29:47right, well, and then just real downpour.
- 29:50So it definitely, you know, drove people inside.
- 29:53The nice thing about the fairgrounds is that it's a mix
- 29:56of interior and exterior. So especially the, you know,
- 30:00broad arrows, the auction partner and they have a big
- 30:02auction room where they hold it. So you could get in there and
- 30:05and stay dry, be comfortable. And I actually got to go to the
- 30:10auction preview on Friday and just check everything out, which
- 30:12was nice because it's it's quieter, there's fewer people
- 30:15and you can really see the cars and like, I got to catch up with
- 30:19some of the Broad Arrow and Haggerty people.
- 30:22And yeah, I mean, it was a good mix this year.
- 30:25They had a real nine O 6, which was one of the cars that was
- 30:28featured in Ford versus Ferrari. And but my favorite, favorite
- 30:33was an 87 dark blue turbo with like a marine and beige leather
- 30:38interior. Wow, I could not get enough of
- 30:41this car and I thought yeah it was non metallic.
- 30:44So is this a 3.6 or something? Is this like a really special
- 30:48that's I? Think it was just a regular
- 30:50turbo. I mean, those are special,
- 30:53obviously. But 3.6 would have been later I
- 30:54guess 964 but. Yeah, it was.
- 30:57I mean, I just like, it kept drawing me back to it.
- 31:00Like I'd go to walk away and I'd realize I had walked back to
- 31:02this car. I mean, it was just stunning,
- 31:04but that, that. Turned about the car, the color.
- 31:07Was it the? Color was what drew me in and
- 31:10then yeah, I mean it was the the dark blue and it was a non
- 31:14metallic blue. Oh, interesting.
- 31:16So there and then the next day at auto kennel there was a 996
- 31:21dark blue turbo. So that was the energy of my
- 31:24weekend was flat, you know, non metallic Navy turbos, I guess.
- 31:30But yeah, just it's just such a beautiful body style.
- 31:34It was very like it was a color still, but it was understated
- 31:39and it just like it really spoke to me.
- 31:42I mean, it seemed like you could just sort of be under the radar.
- 31:46It's very car enthusiastic. You know, you could just drive
- 31:50it and you could kind of, you could get attention if you
- 31:53wanted to, but you could also just.
- 31:55If you know, you know. Yeah, exactly.
- 31:57Yeah, It was a good mix of that, Yeah.
- 32:00And then they had a yellow GT4RS, which was beautiful.
- 32:03They had a silver Carrera GT. You know, those are always
- 32:06stunning to see. Another favorite was, I don't
- 32:10know if you remember a few years ago, Porsche redid one of the
- 32:13Carrera GTS like took it down to the metal, took everything apart
- 32:17and redid it so that it was as if they had built it, you know,
- 32:22like 3 or 4 years ago. But it would be and they
- 32:25finished it in this color. That is it's a little, it's a,
- 32:30it's slightly less bright than like a Miami or Mexico blue.
- 32:33They called it Speedster blue and it was very like it was all
- 32:38over, you know, social media at the time.
- 32:40Broad Arrow auctioned it then, but it was actually there too.
- 32:43It's up for sale again. So I got to see it again.
- 32:46It's just familiar. Now this is coming back to me.
- 32:48Yeah, yeah, it's it was a unique story.
- 32:52They had a 911 E, which is like that's kind of a cool story.
- 32:55They had a roof and then I don't know if you remember the story
- 32:59of that. I think it was a Speedster that
- 33:00Jerry Seinfeld had bought that turned out to have some, you
- 33:03know, it was the Franken car, the Oratio Green.
- 33:05So they had an O1 Oratio Green Carrera 4 with that's what was
- 33:11interesting this time is a lot of the cars in the auction had
- 33:13really unique interiors, so it was fun.
- 33:17There's a theme here, yeah, picked up on that at Retromobile
- 33:20and. Right.
- 33:21It was like a little more visual interest.
- 33:24You know, there was one really beautiful red 911 and it had the
- 33:28interior was a mix of this like red and black houndstooth and
- 33:31then tan leather, which was a really interesting combination.
- 33:34You know, drew in the red from outside and this Erasium green
- 33:38one had this beautiful green and blue Plaid interior.
- 33:41So it was just a lot of interest when you got up to the cars too,
- 33:45then it drew you in even further.
- 33:47Didn't Porsche just announce that they're bringing Pasha back
- 33:50is like a standard option? It's an extra, it's not
- 33:54standard. It's an extra, but sure, right?
- 33:56But it's not. Available I.
- 33:57Think it's like $8000 or something isn't it?
- 34:00You know, worth it. By the way, when I saw Eric and
- 34:03Amity, she had a shirt on a blouse that was was Pasha.
- 34:07And it took me a second to realize like, Oh my God, that's
- 34:09I. Know what that is?
- 34:11Yeah, Sly, Sly, Yeah. You staring at her blouse for 5
- 34:15minutes trying to work it out right.
- 34:18I was going to say I was looking eye to eye for 5 minutes and
- 34:20then I happened to, you know. There we go, there we go.
- 34:24The Did the general consensus to the auction?
- 34:27Was it successful? Did most cars sell?
- 34:30I don't. I haven't.
- 34:31Seen you buy? Actually, yeah.
- 34:33What did you buy? No, I mean, I was sorely
- 34:36tempted, but. Oh.
- 34:37But what I was going to say was it was fun to go to the preview
- 34:39on Friday and then get to walk around the grounds a little bit
- 34:42too, because they had a 935 that was in one of their, you know,
- 34:45their iconic kind of platform displays.
- 34:48And they also had the AO Racing, Rexy and Roxy dinosaur Porsches,
- 34:53which are those are my daughter's favorite.
- 34:54We let go. So I got to see those up close
- 34:57before the event. And yeah, I mean, it was fun.
- 35:00Well, you know, you know, got to see Trent Abbott, which is
- 35:03always a treat, Like he's hilarious.
- 35:05And then Paul Kramer was there. Matt Farah.
- 35:08So Saturday it was nice in the morning.
- 35:10I got there really early and then started to rain.
- 35:13But before it started raining, we got to see Matt Ferris, Sarah
- 35:16Trimble, and then Peter Brotman, who is a friend of mine that I
- 35:20saw at Retro Mobile. So that was really fun and he
- 35:23was just about to go on the Calmile, so he's.
- 35:25Gonna have yeah from the grand so.
- 35:27Yeah, yeah, he's awesome. He's his mirror is my daughter's
- 35:31favorite car, so it's a good car.
- 35:33Well, because, yeah, I mean, it's almost like the people are
- 35:35the best part, right? Like with anything, right?
- 35:37Right. It's it's the cars are just the.
- 35:39Well, and with the rain, it's sort of illustrated that even
- 35:42more because like, it dampened it a little bit in the sense of
- 35:46you couldn't just move freely. You had to be a little more
- 35:48strategic. But it also didn't really
- 35:51because you're running into people.
- 35:52You know, I saw Dan McGinnis again, we had talked about it.
- 35:55He was going to be there. But my two favorite cars that
- 35:59they are, I should say, 4, two favorite displays.
- 36:02They had two of the GT3 RR, the Ren Sport version that they
- 36:07debuted at the last Ren Sport at Laguna Seca.
- 36:10So they had two of those. One was full carbon and one was
- 36:13this really beautiful blue, you know, graphic livery gorgeous.
- 36:18And then on the other side of the wall they had a liquid
- 36:21cooled car. And then have you heard of the
- 36:23artist? It's Joshua Vitas and he does
- 36:25the black, it's a white background and then black like
- 36:29it makes, he makes the cars look like drawings.
- 36:32Like a cartoon car. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:34And. We had one of his cars there,
- 36:36and I had seen, you know, pictures and articles, like
- 36:38Derek Powell wrote an article about them, and it's the videos
- 36:43I'd seen. You know, you see somebody get
- 36:44in and they start to drive it, and it's like an optical
- 36:47illusion. You're having to tell yourself
- 36:49it's a real car because of the effect and the impact it has.
- 36:52So they had one of those and it was really cool.
- 36:54Very cool. So cool.
- 36:56So air, water, is this, is this like, is this something that you
- 36:59feel like you need to go to every year?
- 37:01Is this like, you know, because you can only do so many things
- 37:04each year, right? Is this?
- 37:07I think it is because it's one of the few that's actually in
- 37:11Orange County and you know, I've known some of the people on the
- 37:15team over the years. And so that was I want to go and
- 37:18support my friends obviously. And you know, in the Broad Arrow
- 37:23and the Haggerty team, I know a lot of that team as well.
- 37:25So it's also, again, going back to the people, like it's a good
- 37:28way to see a bunch of people that are not normally in the
- 37:30same place all together and catch up, which is really nice.
- 37:35But yeah, I mean, it's really nice because a lot of the events
- 37:38do take place in LA, which is still accessible for me.
- 37:41But it's much more of a drive, like to be able to go 15 minutes
- 37:44down the road and be at this one, you know?
- 37:47And I went last year with my parents and my daughter and we
- 37:50had a great time. And I think that speaks to the
- 37:53event because my parents Focus is more Ford and Shelby.
- 37:57And they left and they said that was delightful.
- 38:00Like it was really fun. They put together good displays
- 38:02and and the people. And I like the new stuff too.
- 38:05Like, you know, I like the old stuff, but I also like the new
- 38:08stuff, Right. Yeah, it's, it's what I buy,
- 38:11right? Well, and they had what was cool
- 38:13this year, and I don't remember if they had this last year, but
- 38:17they had a Myers Manx display in the mix, which was really fun
- 38:22and they had all right, did you get there you go.
- 38:25I had yes. Magazine here.
- 38:26Yeah, which is not out of aunts. Well, and that was a recreation
- 38:29of a magazine cover from the 80s.
- 38:31That really that photo? It was a Carmen Ghia.
- 38:35If you can't, yeah, if you're not watching the video,
- 38:38apparently very few of you do. I'm sorry about last week where
- 38:41there wasn't a video, but there is.
- 38:42It's the latest of Aunts magazine and there's like a guy
- 38:45in a BMX bike, I don't know, about 12 feet up in the air,
- 38:48flying over a Myers Manx with a man and then Myers Manx who
- 38:52looks as amazed as he just afraid.
- 38:56But it's a great thing. Cool mix.
- 38:57Great photography, isn't it? Yeah, it really is.
- 39:00It really is. Yeah.
- 39:01So that one, you know, Ryan, you got to go to Bassem's book
- 39:03launch with Myers Manx. And so it's again, I mean, we
- 39:07always say the car world is so connected people wise and even
- 39:09all the vehicles are so connected.
- 39:10So they had they had their bus, which was also featured in Ford
- 39:14versus Ferrari in the background.
- 39:16And then they had three Manx. One had a radial engine, one had
- 39:20the four Cam Porsche engine, and then one had the VW.
- 39:22Cool, cool. And yeah, I mean, it's so fun.
- 39:25I got to meet Mike from Manx and then Matt was there and he's
- 39:28getting his radial. And so then he came over and
- 39:32yeah, we got to see. His little story.
- 39:35Yeah. And we got to see his spec and
- 39:37it's it's in process. So yeah, it was just really fun.
- 39:41You just realize how important sound is in a car, right?
- 39:45And I just can't imagine what that sound right behind your
- 39:48head must be like, right? I mean, you're like, you know, a
- 39:50Red Baron or something. I don't know.
- 39:52It's. I know that engine in a vehicle
- 39:55that light, Yeah. I mean, it's got to be a hell of
- 39:57an experience. For sure, absolutely.
- 39:59Should I bring us back to reality for a little while?
- 40:03We. Have to kind of.
- 40:05Have to, I think it's, you know, we get all these great
- 40:06experiences, but also our audience, but they, they want
- 40:09advice, they want insights. They do, and they came here.
- 40:13Right. I mean, I guess.
- 40:15Our heads are in the clouds. Come.
- 40:17On a last chance saloon, that's that's the car show.
- 40:22So I had a dilemma this week. I was down in LA for business
- 40:26meetings and I got to the rental car lot and I want to know what
- 40:31you guys would do. I'll explain my process
- 40:33afterwards, but. You get to.
- 40:35The rental car lot, yeah, yeah, you get to the rental car lot
- 40:38and they say right here is your row and you can pick any car
- 40:42from the row. And the row was right near the
- 40:46front, so it means it wasn't a great row.
- 40:49These are the soccer cars. Immediately.
- 40:51No, I'm lucky when. It's really how we all
- 40:54understood. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:56But. It was like.
- 40:57To me and said, yeah, just yeah. And it was like, no walk at all,
- 40:59right? But the road consisted of a few
- 41:03cars. And I'll name them and tell me
- 41:06like, which would you pick? What's what's the one that
- 41:08really, you know, you would go for and maybe even fight someone
- 41:11else with their luggage? Trying to get the president's
- 41:13circle. OK, this is a.
- 41:15Car cage match going. On I thought my Rd.
- 41:19Maybe we can make the next UFC millions out of that.
- 41:21Right. So the cars were, and I say
- 41:24cars, they're kind of more like mini SUVs.
- 41:26The Hyundai Kona, OK, The Chevrolet Equinox.
- 41:33Oh, no, yeah. Yeah, Ryan has a story about
- 41:36that. The Jeep.
- 41:37Compass, Yeah. Also no.
- 41:40The Kia Sportage, Yeah, that's. That sounded better in this in
- 41:45this group sounds. Like cheese?
- 41:47Let's go. Yeah.
- 41:48From us. Let's go.
- 41:49The Ford Escape or the Nissan? Rogue.
- 41:54Oh man, that is like a what was the last one?
- 41:57A Rogue A. Nissan Rogue.
- 41:59It was like a Rogue's gallery, right?
- 42:01Yeah, this is. This is.
- 42:03Rogues Gallery. It's like.
- 42:06This is. The one time ever it's.
- 42:08Like, careful here, right? Because two weeks before I went
- 42:11to Enterprise and I'd use points and I'd booked myself a Corvette
- 42:15and I ended up driving off the parking lot in a brand new 911.
- 42:18So just Enterprise are great. Just this week I was on a
- 42:21budget. Right.
- 42:23Well, yeah, sometimes you hit it and sometimes you don't.
- 42:26I will say I was just talking to someone who has a Kona and had
- 42:31had an EV before that and was raving about it, she said.
- 42:35For what it is, it's very simple.
- 42:37It gets me around. It charges quickly, it's
- 42:40comfortable, you know it's it does a good job.
- 42:44I do the Kona in that group too. Yeah.
- 42:46Have you? Ever.
- 42:46Driven it, but I've driven every other one of those.
- 42:49It's by process of elimination, Kona, it is.
- 42:54Yeah, are you? I know as well, Lindsay.
- 42:56I would, I would take the Kona. I did have a Jeep Compass.
- 43:00I mean, in 2015 as a rental car and I had a little bit of AI
- 43:06think I have a soft spot because I had a little bit of a final
- 43:08destination moment in that car where traffic suddenly came to a
- 43:13stop and I looked in the rearview mirror and there was a
- 43:15semi fishtailing towards me from behind.
- 43:18And I was able to get myself out of it.
- 43:21So the compass, you know, did its job.
- 43:24Yeah, OK. Yeah.
- 43:27So so would you go for the compass or would you go for?
- 43:30I think I would go for the Kona because I would want to try
- 43:32something new. Interesting.
- 43:33Do you want to break down while each one of those models is
- 43:35awful? Well.
- 43:37I don't think we've got enough time on the podcast, Daphne, but
- 43:41let me explain my process. Yeah, what was your what?
- 43:43Did you? Yeah.
- 43:44So how did this how did this all shake out?
- 43:46Well I I landed in LA and it's sunny it is.
- 43:51As I'm walking along the line, the first thing I'm looking for
- 43:53is a sunroof. I actually don't care what
- 43:55badges on the front sunroof and none of them had a sunroof.
- 44:00OK, so I'm like so immediately. Fresh off the 9/11.
- 44:06Yeah, fresh off the 9/11, which was convertible.
- 44:08Yeah. Immediately I rolled out the
- 44:10Equinox. I don't know why.
- 44:11It just does not appeal to me. Maybe I'm a brand snob, I don't
- 44:15know. But like that was straight out
- 44:17the window. So then the Ford Escape.
- 44:20I've got friends of a big engine problems with their Ford Escape.
- 44:22So I was like, no. I take.
- 44:25I'd actually take the Equinox over the escape at this point.
- 44:28Yeah. I just haven't seen one of the
- 44:30current Gen. Like I drove one of the first
- 44:32generations for a bit and I used to joke that it was made of
- 44:35Legos and I love Legos, but. Yeah, those first generation
- 44:39ones were kind of cool, the boxy ones.
- 44:41But now they're just like they're they're.
- 44:42Like they were just. Super like the dead like there.
- 44:45Wasn't a whole lot to it, you know, not no pickup.
- 44:47You're talking escape? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:51Not much escape in the escape. I once took one of those first
- 44:54generations off roading and it ripped off the whole underbody
- 44:57and I returned it and no one was the wiser.
- 45:00So I don't know if I'd do that in the new escape, though that's
- 45:03a little too. Statue.
- 45:04Crossover than I. Mean you're well.
- 45:07That was like 2004, right? Maybe earlier, yeah.
- 45:11Was it? Back to the.
- 45:13Yeah. Was it an escape we took to
- 45:14Pike's Peak? No, that was an edge.
- 45:17That was an edge, edge, edge that made a terrible car in this
- 45:21company. Yeah, that's yeah.
- 45:22The edges are good. Yeah, so the Equinox was out,
- 45:25the Escape was out, the Sportage was out.
- 45:29I'd had Rogues before and I thought, what's going to be the
- 45:33most comfortable to sleep in? And it's got to be.
- 45:38The country, we need our own numbers, but I went for the I
- 45:44went for the Jeep just because, you know, it's, it's a known
- 45:47quantity, it's relatively comfortable, right, you know.
- 45:51Those aren't terrible. Yeah, it was a amount of space.
- 45:57Yeah, it did the job great. These are like, these are like
- 46:00threes, right? For cars, though, all of them,
- 46:03right? Yeah, it was.
- 46:04Like a row 3. It's like better than slightly
- 46:07better than nothing. It wasn't plain strains and
- 46:09automobiles and you couldn't get a rental car.
- 46:10He's like, I'll take a Datsun, I'll take a a Toyota, I'll take
- 46:13a a Ford, I'll take anything, right?
- 46:15I mean, that's these are those cars, right?
- 46:17Yeah. Just need to get somewhere.
- 46:20Yeah. Your case a very important
- 46:21business meeting. A really important business
- 46:23meeting. But yeah, so there's no wrong
- 46:25answer, right? I mean, everything is getting
- 46:27you for A to B these days. Modern cars are good, but.
- 46:31Yeah, but it is, yeah. I mean, it's always interesting.
- 46:34Like sometimes you really hit it like with your 911 and sometimes
- 46:38you don't with the rental cars. I mean, I had one, yeah, a
- 46:41couple years ago in Monterey, I was chatting with the rental,
- 46:44with the counter agent. Oh, I see.
- 46:46Are you the cutest rental travel agent in the world?
- 46:50I bet you get that all the time, but I got I ended up getting a
- 46:54brand new forerunner with only. Nine Wow, there we.
- 46:57Go nice. I have yet to get a Forerunner
- 46:59from a rental counter. Well, and then when I went back
- 47:02for Rentsport that year, the guy was still there and I thanked
- 47:05him. I said it was so, you know,
- 47:06really made the week and he's like, well, I don't have that
- 47:08one, but I do have another one. Would you like it again?
- 47:11Yes, I was. Nice, this one's a TRD pro.
- 47:15Right, she'll, she'll work her magic and.
- 47:19Chat right? This is why we all need to
- 47:21travel together. Yeah, Eli at the Hertz counter
- 47:23in. Modern Eli.
- 47:24What's API? You know Eli probably listening
- 47:28so. Right, obviously.
- 47:29So I had to say hi. He's manager now, yeah.
- 47:31He's got all she got. Fired after slipping these
- 47:35forerunners to all the pretty ladies.
- 47:38You know that's custom the rental company, right?
- 47:41Yeah, shoot, man. That's a good time.
- 47:44Yeah. Rental cars.
- 47:45It's a weird lottery. Well, if you've flown into
- 47:47Monterey, like for car week, it's a tiny airport, right?
- 47:50Like, you know, it'd be that's it's in, in notoriously bad
- 47:54rental cars because they're just like, yeah, beaten to crap.
- 47:58And, you know, yeah, that's well.
- 48:00I think they. Threes.
- 48:02It's a fleet. I think they step it up for car
- 48:04week because I was. Walking down.
- 48:05Not for me. They had there was a Maserati.
- 48:09Oh, there was. There was, yeah.
- 48:11And there were. I actually think that Eli was
- 48:15showing Lindsay a different part of the parking lot to where we
- 48:18went. Yeah, that was just somebody's
- 48:19car. No.
- 48:24You Yeah, I think we got the budget end of the car park,
- 48:26right, Right. Yeah.
- 48:28Car rentals. What can you do?
- 48:30It's I've got an English phrase when I go to my check in at the
- 48:34car rental and I just say, have you got anything fun?
- 48:38And usually they kind of go, OK, well, this person might be a car
- 48:41person. Let's see what we can find out
- 48:43for them. Well, aren't you pulling the I'm
- 48:45a car journalist thing like I I did.
- 48:48I I'm not as well published as you, Ryan, unfortunately. 55
- 48:54articles I'm up to. Come on.
- 48:56At what point is it official? But I think you should when you
- 48:59slide over one of those new stickers.
- 49:02Yeah, I but yeah, I work with Ryan Barky.
- 49:05That's right. Yeah.
- 49:06Yeah. You may have heard of a little
- 49:08show called That Car Show. I don't.
- 49:10Know if you know, I'm kind of a big deal.
- 49:12Yeah, also I'm British. That's kind of carish.
- 49:16Notes and all the rest. The yeah, the adventures in car
- 49:19rentals continue. Watch out for the the next
- 49:22installment. Sorry.
- 49:23Also, do you have anything fun as a British ISM?
- 49:27I don't know whether it is or not.
- 49:28But I think OK it. Kind of feels like the person at
- 49:32the car rental place is like, oh, maybe this person's a car
- 49:35person, maybe like. Get more of a car.
- 49:36Like to surprise and delight or something.
- 49:38OK. But yeah, I'll let you know how
- 49:40that goes, yeah. Well, let's, let's just throw
- 49:43down this as a challenge, right? The next time we travel, OK, Fly
- 49:48to an airport or something, Get a rental car.
- 49:50Who can come back with the best rental car without paying extra?
- 49:55Yes, without. That's the.
- 49:56Key OK, so it's an ongoing challenge.
- 49:58Yeah. So it might not be, you know,
- 50:00I'm not going anywhere tomorrow, but you know, maybe next month
- 50:03or maybe. Next one of us?
- 50:05No. And we need to make sure that
- 50:09Eli is not included in this or else we're going to lose
- 50:12straight away, right? I can't use.
- 50:15I can't. I can't leverage my resources.
- 50:18Right. Well, Eli, I'll never forget
- 50:20that name. Now that's a good one.
- 50:22Yeah, right. Well, and he was so nice, you
- 50:24know, and yeah, just super helpful.
- 50:26And it really did because it was a brand new carpet practically.
- 50:30And you know, you hear things about Forerunners, especially
- 50:33the first Gen. like underpowered or whatever.
- 50:36This one was perfect all the way all the way all the way around.
- 50:40Eli, we'll see you in August, buddy.
- 50:42Yeah, I love. Him best to see him.
- 50:46I test drove a car last week. Oh, what did you drive?
- 50:51So you know how sometimes you kind of look at a car and you're
- 50:53like, I wonder if it drives as it looks?
- 50:56Yeah. And I, I managed to get my keys,
- 50:59the keys, too. And I don't know.
- 51:01We should use a buzzer here because it's me saying it.
- 51:03Not you, Lindsay, but the Bronco Raptor.
- 51:07Oh. Wow.
- 51:08Or the Barraptor Raptor. And it's a divisive, divisive
- 51:12car. Divisive.
- 51:13OK, So what did you think, Dan? Yeah.
- 51:16So my expectations were incredibly high.
- 51:20Yeah. I told a couple of friends that
- 51:22I was going to test it, and both of them said exactly the same
- 51:26thing. It's too big.
- 51:28Yeah. It's too big for you.
- 51:29You won't like it. It's too big.
- 51:31So were you test driving it with an eye to possibly purchasing
- 51:34one or was it just the opportunity to drive it?
- 51:36Yes, it's just what Dan does for fun.
- 51:37Yeah, I mean, me too. That's why I'm clarifying.
- 51:42So I I was thinking about swapping in the Audi and the
- 51:46Corolla and getting one do it all car.
- 51:49Yeah. So it's something that has
- 51:50performance that you can take the top off and you know, can
- 51:53store your tires all that sort of I'm not sure that you get the
- 51:57tires from the Bronco in the Bronco because they're I.
- 52:00Think they're not on the barometer?
- 52:02Yeah, thirty siblings. Tires.
- 52:04It's almost like Lambo. Rambo.
- 52:06Lambo size. Yeah, massive.
- 52:10So anyway, I went to the dealer and I'd specifically asked for a
- 52:14used Bronco Raptor to test drive.
- 52:17I get there and the dealer has the brand new car waiting for
- 52:20me, so clearly he's already thinking about the upsell.
- 52:25So I'm like how many miles have you got on this thing?
- 52:27I'm really happy to drive the used one.
- 52:30And he's like, Oh no, it's here now.
- 52:32So. So we get out to the car park
- 52:34and this thing was, yeah, you have to climb up into it.
- 52:38And I Lindsay, you drove one of the Seattle.
- 52:42Auto show when we were there, yeah.
- 52:43Yeah, so you literally, you almost need to take some
- 52:47crampons with you to get into this thing because it's so high.
- 52:51So that was the first thing. I didn't realize how high they
- 52:53are. And you then get in it and it's
- 52:58very familiar. Forward controls, paddles, all
- 53:01that sort of stuff. You've got all sorts of extra
- 53:03buttons for auxiliary things like lights, etcetera.
- 53:07But you're pretty high up, you know, you kind of truck level,
- 53:09high output there. So took it down the road.
- 53:12My expectations were that this thing was going to really,
- 53:15really RIP. And it didn't really, really
- 53:19RIP. Did not.
- 53:21No, I mean, you you think that because it's got the the Raptor
- 53:24brand associated with it. Yeah.
- 53:26And it was nippy, but it wasn't like I was kind of like hoping
- 53:30for a kind of holy shit, this is quick.
- 53:32Right, right. Like.
- 53:33Pull. Your hair.
- 53:34Back. Well, it's not 500 horsepower.
- 53:35It's like 470 or something, right?
- 53:37It's not. It's a crazy.
- 53:38V6 isn't it? They didn't put AV8IN it because
- 53:41it wouldn't. Fit right, but the V6 S are
- 53:43faster than the V eights if I'm not mistaken.
- 53:45Is it the V6? Is it the EcoBoost?
- 53:48I'm not sure now you're testing me out.
- 53:50It's I remember it's AV 6. You know what EcoBoost means?
- 53:53Honestly, I think it's just the turbo, right?
- 53:55Yeah. That's just that's the name that
- 53:58they came up with for the V6 Turbo.
- 53:59Engine ecologically boosted. Yeah, that's what's in my truck.
- 54:03OK, yeah, so I, I don't know if it was, but anyway, so this
- 54:06thing, it didn't RIP like I wanted it to RIP.
- 54:10It didn't. I can imagine it handles really
- 54:12well in the sand. You know, I can imagine that you
- 54:14just don't realize that you're going over sand, etcetera.
- 54:16When? You're right.
- 54:17Which? I.
- 54:18Care. Not at all.
- 54:20Right. And how often do you find sand
- 54:22in the car park? Right, but.
- 54:24You're going to the wrong car parks.
- 54:26Right. I hate to admit it to Jeff
- 54:29Lincoln and everyone else that told me, but it was just too
- 54:31big. Just.
- 54:33But really? Is that because it's the Raptor
- 54:35like extra wide or with the standard Bronco?
- 54:38Because you can't get the Raptor with the manual right, but you
- 54:40can the regular. Correct, but the width it's got
- 54:44extra width. Even with the standard is it's
- 54:47just OK because in my mind's eye they're closer to like a
- 54:50Wrangler, but I guess they're not.
- 54:51I've never driven 1. The Raptors are there's, they
- 54:54have a volume to them because of the the additional.
- 54:58Like the? Fenders and the yeah,
- 55:01everything, everything is, it's like jet puffed a little bit.
- 55:07The last week it was constipated, this week is just.
- 55:10Like me. Love it, absolutely love it.
- 55:14Stay puffed Marshmallow. Bronco.
- 55:20If you're in Montana or if you're somewhere like where
- 55:23there is a lot of space, I can imagine it's a great car.
- 55:26Yeah. But yeah, it just wasn't for.
- 55:29Well, and if you're you know when you look at where you're
- 55:32going to be driving it, you don't want to have to pause at
- 55:35parking garages and. Right am I going to fit right
- 55:38you? Know yeah, you.
- 55:40Want to be out mending fences in that thing?
- 55:43Right, right. Well, and that's, I know it's
- 55:45interesting Dan, cuz I know we talked about it at the time and
- 55:48I was also very excited to try it out and had high
- 55:52expectations. And that was probably one of the
- 55:56most interesting car test drive days for me because I drove the
- 56:00F-150 Lightning, the Raptor, the Explorer St., and then the Mach
- 56:07EGT. And if I had had to rank them
- 56:10ahead of time, probably the Bronco and the Lightning would
- 56:13have been tied in what I expected to be first, and then
- 56:17the Explorer, and then the Mach E And the Mach E was my favorite
- 56:20and the Bronco was my least favorite.
- 56:22And what's a Bronco? What's a Raptor go for?
- 56:24Is it about 7080? It's a bit weird at the minute,
- 56:27I didn't want to answer that but.
- 56:28No, I don't know. Actually, so to counteract with
- 56:32tariffs, Ford are doing something called employee
- 56:34pricing. Yeah.
- 56:36So in essence, you're getting, I think, between 15 and 20% off.
- 56:39OK. But also, yeah, these cars
- 56:42aren't selling. So, yeah, So there are bigger
- 56:46deals to be had on these things. So I think you could pick a new
- 56:50one up for probably about 85. OK, But but an MSRP would be
- 56:54about 100. OK.
- 56:56And and there's a lot available at that price point as we know.
- 56:59And I think that's maybe the thing working against it the
- 57:01most. I mean, you're talking about, I
- 57:04don't know, Yeah, G Wagon now. I mean, you're getting close to
- 57:09right. What's AG Wagon Star?
- 57:11The Jeep has the what you call it the is it the 392?
- 57:13Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:16So that would. Be also like kind of panned
- 57:17though, like people never really got crazy about those.
- 57:21But I think people like that because it is AV8, right, versus
- 57:24the the V6, you know, you could have something very quick from
- 57:28Porsche. Yeah, I'm sorry.
- 57:31The G Wagon starts at $148,000. So nearly double OK.
- 57:37Yeah. Ryan's ability to stay with.
- 57:40The common people. Twisting about slowly.
- 57:43#Unrelatable. Well, I've never priced the
- 57:45basic, you know, the base G wagon.
- 57:47It's, it's, you know, the G63 or nothing.
- 57:50Well, and I will say when I did the the women's off road day at
- 57:54Dirt Fish with Avant's, there were several Raptors there and
- 57:58they were amazingly capable. Like they chewed up the course.
- 58:02The people had so much fun driving them.
- 58:04They looked really cool. So I think it's one of those two
- 58:07where. They do look cool.
- 58:08They're they're really designed to be off road and that kind of
- 58:12thing. And so when you drive it on the
- 58:13street, it's a little neutered. You're not really fully
- 58:16experiencing what it's been designed to do.
- 58:19But yeah, you know, but that's tricky because if you're buying,
- 58:22if you're going to have one car, you're going to be driving it in
- 58:25context that it wasn't necessarily driven for if it's a
- 58:27purpose designed vehicle like that.
- 58:30Yeah. And you want to be able to enjoy
- 58:31it, especially people like us. Right, right.
- 58:35I do not have an assistant. I have to type my questions in.
- 58:39I don't have a. You'll get there one day, Ryan.
- 58:41I believe in you. Yeah, I'm sorry, now I'm
- 58:46punching in G550 prices and it's talking about Gulf Streams and
- 58:49that's a whole other. But according to this, an AMG is
- 58:51only 40,000 more. So why?
- 58:54Why, why limit yourself to the G550?
- 58:56Just just saying. I mean, while we're at it,
- 59:00that's pretty funny. Well, and one thing, I mean,
- 59:03Speaking of like crazy cars, there was one last little
- 59:06footnote I wanted to say about all of my visits to Crystal
- 59:09Cove. I met a group of young kids.
- 59:13I mean, they're probably 18 ish but young as far as compared to
- 59:17me. But you know, there's a big
- 59:19discussion and we've all talked about this about like our, our
- 59:22cars are kids interested in cars these days and kids not getting
- 59:26their licenses and whatever. And these kids were so fun and
- 59:30so enthusiastic, just like TrueCar people.
- 59:34One of them was named Kendall, and she has a Supra that's
- 59:38wrapped half and half hot pink and matte black.
- 59:41And she ended up walking us around the car and showing us
- 59:43all the little Easter eggs. And they had put, you know,
- 59:46stickers under the wrap. And then they put the wrap on so
- 59:49it looks like it's embossed. Wow.
- 59:51And just super cool. And then one of her friends has
- 59:54a Mercedes convertible that's covered in purple Muppet hair.
- 59:57Oh boy. So very distinctive.
- 1:00:02Yeah, good. Hey, good on them.
- 1:00:03Good on. Them, I know they were just, you
- 1:00:05know, and then, yeah, it was it was very fun and very, you know,
- 1:00:10good to see like, OK, the next generation is alive and well and
- 1:00:14kids are still into cars and. Yeah, all of that, 100%,
- 1:00:17hundred, 10%. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:20Super fun. And then we saw him the next day
- 1:00:21and we're like, Oh my gosh. How do you wash that thing?
- 1:00:25Oh, that, that was the thing. So we saw it Saturday and
- 1:00:28they're like, it's a little dirty from the rain.
- 1:00:31It had gotten rained, so all the fur was kind of deflated.
- 1:00:34I mean, do you use like detergent then like laundry?
- 1:00:37Detergent. This is like a.
- 1:00:38Conditioner. Yeah, yeah, from getting, you
- 1:00:41know, dry and brittle. Come on.
- 1:00:44But yeah, so car girl Kendall with AK.
- 1:00:46She was right on. OK, cool.
- 1:00:48Yeah. Yeah, and they were about to
- 1:00:50swap out the. Fur kids are all right, aren't?
- 1:00:51They exactly. The kids are all right.
- 1:00:54Have we got a show title in that?
- 1:00:56Yeah. Maybe.
- 1:00:57I think I used that once for the roadshow.
- 1:01:00The kids are all right and. Steering committee or something?
- 1:01:02Yeah. And Muppet Mercedes.
- 1:01:05Yeah, Muppet hair. I think we're at a show, aren't
- 1:01:09we folks? I think we are.
- 1:01:11What do you think, Ryan? We.
- 1:01:13Oh, we can keep talking on that. I.
- 1:01:18Think I'm all hopped up on any beers.
- 1:01:20I mean, it's just getting getting going.
- 1:01:21We had. At least a half a case of non
- 1:01:22alcoholic beer left. What am I supposed?
- 1:01:24To do with it. Well, now he's going to knock
- 1:01:26three of those over at least, isn't he?
- 1:01:30So. 2 down, 1 to go. For our listeners, let us know
- 1:01:34where else we should introduce the buzzer.
- 1:01:36I'm thinking Dan McGuinness, Yeah.
- 1:01:39And maybe Derek Powell, because they seem.
- 1:01:41To come up alone. This week's I'm Maybe.
- 1:01:43Crystal Cove. Crystal Cove.
- 1:01:46I mean, we could end up with a show that's just buzzer, buzzer,
- 1:01:48buzzer. One for every time I spill a
- 1:01:50beer. That's yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:51Well it's like, you know, John and Justin had to do that AI
- 1:01:54show. We might, we're like, we may
- 1:01:55have to fall back on just a show that's an entirely the buzzer if
- 1:01:58we have an issue. Wild noises.
- 1:02:01We'll get there. So that's a show, I think.
- 1:02:03Who is gonna leave us with our famous catch phrase?
- 1:02:07Ryan, would you like to? Yeah, this is that car show.
- 1:02:11Always be driving for next time. Excellent.
- 1:02:16Thanks everyone. We'll see everybody next week.
