- 0:09state of Iowa, we are grateful that you are.
- 0:12We'll take you until 2:00. At that time, turn things over
- 0:14off the bench. I'll come.
- 0:16Lucas Strain, David Eichel from 2:00 until 5.
- 0:20Let's continue with our NFL theme today.
- 0:22Dalton Wasserman covers the league for profootballfocus.com.
- 0:26He's with us. Dalton.
- 0:27Trent Condon, this is Ken Miller.
- 0:29Good to talk to you again. Dalton, how are you?
- 0:32Oh awesome, the seasons coming right around the corner.
- 0:34Feels good. Feels good.
- 0:36Absolutely. Hard Knocks episode 1 tonight,
- 0:38we check another box on our way to opening night.
- 0:41Well, I want to start with you. I want to go out West because
- 0:44this is was a really chic pick when the sports book operators
- 0:48began to post their numbers for this year's Super Bowl.
- 0:51As soon as last year's Super Bowl, the Lombardi Trophy was
- 0:54passed out to the Eagles. Boom, you could bet on next
- 0:56year. And one of those teams that took
- 0:58a lot of money right off the bat was the Rams, because it's top
- 1:01mind that they were the team that pushed the Eagles more than
- 1:04anybody in the playoffs. Now comes word that Matthew
- 1:08Stafford has serious back injuries.
- 1:12Sean McVeigh was asked about it yesterday and he immediately
- 1:15changed the subject to answer a question about Jimmy Garoppolo,
- 1:18which was not taken as a positive sign.
- 1:22If Stafford is hurt and it's a back so we know how quickie
- 1:26those can be, what does that do to the Rams chances?
- 1:30Well, if if he's out for an extended period of time as
- 1:33severely enters their championship hopes, right.
- 1:36And I think this is a team when you talk about an aging
- 1:38quarterback who already isn't that mobile if you're talking
- 1:41about now having a back injury. And the whole key is to have a
- 1:44lead pass protection in front of him that that's really the key
- 1:47to their season. So I mean, they need Stafford at
- 1:50100% and they need him upright in the pocket in order to be
- 1:53able to contend for a championship because he him and
- 1:56those receivers are really the difference when you talk about
- 1:58offensively that team being able to to compete at the top of the
- 2:01NFC. When you look at the NFC, the
- 2:03Eagles are a behemoth. When you just talk about the
- 2:05roster, talent, obviously what we saw from them a year ago, who
- 2:09else do you put in the conversation is are you down on
- 2:13the Lions? Taking a step back, What do you
- 2:15look at the NFC as a whole, knowing that the Eagles roster
- 2:17is ridiculous? Who else do you like overall?
- 2:21Yeah, it's tough because you've got the Rams, but they've got
- 2:24Matthew Stafford in his injury, the entire AF.
- 2:26Sorry, NFC North, when you talk about especially Detroit and
- 2:30Minnesota and Green Bay are all extremely talented.
- 2:33All three of them made the playoffs last year and they all
- 2:35have a ton of talent, but question marks of their own.
- 2:37Then you look at the South with teams like Tampa Bay or maybe
- 2:40even Atlanta with their explosive offenses.
- 2:42And then within the Eagle Zone division, you still have Jayden
- 2:45Daniels and the Washington Commanders who were playing in
- 2:47the NFC title game too. So I think you have a bunch of
- 2:50teams with a lot of talent, but also one or two flaws that
- 2:53really put them a full step behind Philadelphia.
- 2:56So there's going to be, I think, a wide open race both in the
- 2:59other 3 divisions and just for the speed, the pecking order in
- 3:02the NFC in general, because the Eagles pretty clearly have the
- 3:05best roster, but there's a lot of teams with a lot of talent.
- 3:08If the Rams do take a step back because of an injury, so let's
- 3:11say the the Niners were so banged up last year, they
- 3:15finished last. They've got an easy schedule.
- 3:18If there is such a thing in the NFL, statistically says that
- 3:20there is Purdy's back for another year.
- 3:23He's got his new contract. There's a lot of love out there
- 3:26for the Niners. A, to win the division and B,
- 3:28for Kyle Shanahan to be coach of the year.
- 3:30We know God, those wins, those awards.
- 3:32It's never an Andy Reid or, you know, one of the upper echelon
- 3:36coaches gets his team to the best record.
- 3:38It's a team that comes from nowhere.
- 3:40Where are you on the Niners? Could they?
- 3:42Could they they win the West this year, do you think, Dalton?
- 3:46They could, but they need all of their stars healthy, right?
- 3:49When you look at last year, Trent Williams was hurt,
- 3:51Christian McCaffrey was hurt, Brandon Iuke, Ricky Pierce saw.
- 3:54I mean, they just had so many injuries, right?
- 3:56I think even Nick Bosa missed a couple of games that they don't
- 3:59have enough depth to be able to sustain multiple injuries to
- 4:03their star players. Their their starting lineup,
- 4:06their first 22 when they're all fully healthy is as good as
- 4:09anybody in the league. But what we've seen the last
- 4:10couple years of the Niners is the depth deteriorate, right?
- 4:13You talk about the offensive line doesn't have a ton of
- 4:16depth. The defensive line doesn't have
- 4:17a ton of depth. There's only so many injuries
- 4:20to, you know, especially your running back core.
- 4:22And when you're so reliant on Christian McCaffrey, there's
- 4:24only so many injuries you can handle.
- 4:26So if they're 100%, I think absolutely they're a playoff
- 4:29contender. But even just a month out from
- 4:30the season, there's still questions on multiple players
- 4:33there. I think McCaffrey especially is
- 4:35a big X Factor. So I do like them provided they
- 4:38can be healthy. But we don't have proof yet over
- 4:41the past year really that they can stay healthy like that.
- 4:44The Atlanta Falcons, Ken, I don't know, a month or two ago,
- 4:47he came charging in here. He he found the dark horse and
- 4:50then a day or two later, he had relented on that one.
- 4:53And I've been the same way I look at it for a while.
- 4:55You get them maybe at the right angle, you get the right
- 4:58sunlight on. I mean, yeah, I like the skill
- 5:00positions. I think we saw it a lot out of
- 5:02Pennix. They maybe fix the pass rush and
- 5:04they can actually get to the quarterback.
- 5:06And then you come back the other way.
- 5:07You can talk yourselves in circles.
- 5:08So what part of the circle are you in right now with the
- 5:11Atlanta Falcons? I mean, there's two big ifs and
- 5:14you mentioned them both. 1 is if Michael Pennex can perform the
- 5:17way he did in his three starts for a whole season.
- 5:19And honestly, he's got a very good supporting cast to do so.
- 5:21You got a really good offensive line.
- 5:23I think Drake London out wide is aiming for a massive season with
- 5:26the way Pennex was throwing him the ball last year.
- 5:28But the bigger question to me, and you mentioned it there was
- 5:31the pass rush, right? It was one of the two or three
- 5:33worst pass rushing teams in the league last year.
- 5:36The back seven on defense is pretty good, but you're playing
- 5:39so many good quarterbacks in the NFL now that if you can't
- 5:42generate any pressure on them, then you're at a distinct
- 5:44disadvantage, right? Especially when you're talking
- 5:47about having your own young quarterback that's trying to
- 5:49develop in his own right. So I do think Pennex is in for a
- 5:52Goodyear. I'm a big fan of their offense.
- 5:54But that pass rush and the kids, you know, coming in as rookies
- 5:57with Pearson Walker and then guys like Braylon Trice coming
- 6:00back who were hurt last year, they really needed a lot better
- 6:02pass rush in order to compete with those top teams in the top
- 6:05quarterbacks. Where were you when Kyle Pitts
- 6:08is coming out of college and from Florida where he's just
- 6:11tearing up college football? I'll be honest, all I I thought
- 6:14they could start working on his bust already because this guy
- 6:16looked as though he was, you know, going to be at the end of
- 6:19his career. Wouldn't be long before he's
- 6:21going to make his way to Canton and try and agree a a a Jack
- 6:26gold jacket. He's been awful.
- 6:28He's not lived up to expectations.
- 6:30Maybe a little bit better last year.
- 6:32So is this just a case of a guy taking a while to get
- 6:35acclimated? Would you buy a buy stock on
- 6:37Kyle Pitts having a Kyle Pitts type of year when he was back in
- 6:42college? I mean, it's tough because the
- 6:44trajectory has been moving downward.
- 6:47His best season in the NFL was his rookie season when he had
- 6:501000 yards. And I think it's just a matter
- 6:52of when you have a guy like Kyle Pitts who's not a particularly
- 6:55good blocker and it's hard to use him in line closer to the
- 6:58offensive line, then you're really talking just about a guy
- 7:01who's a big receiver, right? And those guys can succeed.
- 7:04But you know, it's just a matter of finding the right role for
- 7:07him. And if he's the liabilities of
- 7:08blocker, then it's hard for him to be on the field as much.
- 7:11He's still obviously very talented.
- 7:13The Falcons don't have a huge depth of weapons and they don't
- 7:16have another tight end like him on the roster.
- 7:18So they need him to be better this year.
- 7:20But time is ticking, honestly. And maybe it's going to take a
- 7:23guy like Panics who can work the ball better vertically downfield
- 7:26in the last few Falcons quarterbacks.
- 7:28But I I really think you're really on the fence here with
- 7:31Kyle Pitts in his production this year.
- 7:32It's he's one of the biggest make or break players in
- 7:34football. Green Bay has been a team that
- 7:37has been such a wide range of opinions and I've heard it all
- 7:41from this team's going to finish 4th and decide 4th after going
- 7:44one and five in the division a year ago to this is a team that
- 7:46can win this division and maybe even contend for a top couple of
- 7:49seed in the NFCA. Big part of that is obviously
- 7:53the development of Jordan Love and taking yet another step
- 7:55forward this year. What do you look at this team
- 7:57though overall? Where are you on the Packers?
- 8:01I don't see them as as right now as good as Philadelphia in the
- 8:05NFCI do think they can win that division.
- 8:07I think any of the four teams in the NFC North have a chance to
- 8:10win that division. But to me, Jordan Love has to be
- 8:13a little bit better with the decision making.
- 8:15I know he was hurt a bit last year in the first half
- 8:17especially and it got better down the stretch, but not
- 8:20forcing those home run shots downfield.
- 8:22And then as far as the Packers as a team, I I have my concerns
- 8:25about their past defense as well.
- 8:27I don't think it's being said enough that their past rush when
- 8:30when halfway wasn't blitzing was not good enough.
- 8:33And their cornerback room is extremely thin.
- 8:35You've got Jair Alexander and Eric Stokes both gone now.
- 8:38Nate Hobbs is out for the rest of training camp with an injury.
- 8:41I'm a little worried about their past defense, both their
- 8:44secondary and their inability to rush to rush the passer with
- 8:47four. But obviously, look, they've got
- 8:49a ton of weapons on offense. They've got a very good
- 8:51offensive line. They've got a high floor because
- 8:53of just all of the talent they have.
- 8:55But there's a few things on that team that would worry me.
- 8:57Let's get to the AFC Dalton Wasserman Pro Football focuses
- 9:00joining us. I want to start out West with
- 9:03you. I'll phrase it this way.
- 9:04Do the Chiefs repeat? Or if not Kansas City, who's
- 9:08ready to claim the West? I I will not be the team to pick
- 9:12against the Chiefs. They've won.
- 9:14What is it now, nine in a row or 99 in a row?
- 9:17Now I won't be the team to pick against the Chiefs.
- 9:20It's just like all those old days in the AFC East, the Tom
- 9:22Brady and the Patriots, just there's no sense in picking
- 9:25against them, right? Because it feels like they're
- 9:27going to win it every year until somehow they don't write
- 9:29something drastic. What happens?
- 9:31But no, I mean, I, I really like what's going on both in Denver
- 9:34and in LA with the Broncos and Chargers, right?
- 9:36You've got young quarterbacks, you've got ascending defenses,
- 9:39you've got very, very well coached teams with Sean Payton
- 9:42and Jim Harbaugh. It is going to be tighter than
- 9:44ever, especially with all the one score games that the Chiefs
- 9:47won last year and at times even a little bit of luck working
- 9:50their way. But I I still have to pick the
- 9:52Chiefs until further notice. I don't know if I got into the
- 9:55wrong drink, but I I'm starting to maybe talk myself into Aaron
- 10:00Rodgers working in Pittsburgh. I don't know what it is, maybe
- 10:05it's been the long and offseason, but I find myself
- 10:08more and more maybe this can work.
- 10:10Can you see this working at age 40 and a guy that is not going
- 10:14to take any crap in Mike Tomlin? It can work if they protect him,
- 10:18right, if the supporting cast is good enough, especially on the
- 10:21offensive line. I'll say the first thing,
- 10:23though, is that their defense is so good and it's much better
- 10:26equipped than The Jets was last year, that Rogers should not be
- 10:29expected to go in there and be the highest scoring, you know,
- 10:32quarterback, highest scoring team in the NFL.
- 10:34He scores 24 points. They're going to win ball games
- 10:37with that defense in the way they've stacked it up.
- 10:39But offensively, to me, he's got to be protected, right?
- 10:41He's older than Russell Wilson. He's less mobile than Russell
- 10:44Wilson. And the Steelers, to me, the
- 10:46biggest weak spot on their entire team is their offensive
- 10:49tackles. You got Broderick Jones going
- 10:51into year three now to back in the left side at a new position.
- 10:54He struggled his first two years and Troy Fautano on the other
- 10:57side who only played one game last year.
- 10:59So if they protect him, I think it can absolutely work.
- 11:02I don't know. I don't think necessarily
- 11:04they're a championship contender.
- 11:05But if you're talking about working in the sense of the
- 11:08Steelers can win that first playoff game since 2016, yeah,
- 11:11it can work to that extent. But they need to protect him
- 11:14because Rogers, at this point, with the lack of mobile Odie, is
- 11:16not going to protect himself much back there in the pocket.
- 11:19A couple more minutes with Dalton Wasserman.
- 11:21Dalton, what am I missing? It seems like the Houston Texans
- 11:24should be everybody's pick to win the South.
- 11:27I know maybe Stroud took a bit of a step back, but he bent some
- 11:30injuries at the wide receiver position certainly didn't help.
- 11:33I think the Texans are a free square.
- 11:36Where are you on Houston winning the South?
- 11:39I think they're very clearly the favorite, but they do have the
- 11:42kryptonite of that offensive line and some think including in
- 11:45our unit rankings, we have them right now, is the worst
- 11:47offensive line in football. Just not a whole lot.
- 11:50There's just not really any premier talent down there now
- 11:53that they've traded Laramie Tunsil to Washington.
- 11:56So when you talk about any team that you have, you know, whether
- 11:59you have an elite quarterback and all these things.
- 12:01And I love their defense, especially their past defense
- 12:03with all the stars they have. But anytime you have a team that
- 12:07has a potentially bottom 5 offensive line, we see the same
- 12:10thing up in Cincinnati. You could lose the game any
- 12:12given week because you're losing the line of scrimmage, right?
- 12:15So I think that is they are, I think the clear favorite in that
- 12:18division. They do have a clear kryptonite.
- 12:20If the Colts could figure out their quarterback situation, I
- 12:23think they have a very dangerous offense.
- 12:25Who knows if Liam Cohen can jumpstart that thing in
- 12:27Jacksonville. So I don't think it's 100%
- 12:30guaranteed. I do think they're the most
- 12:31talented team, but when that offensive line is your biggest
- 12:33weakness, you're always liable to lose a game week to week,
- 12:36maybe even ones that you shouldn't.
- 12:38You mention offensive line and that brings me to something with
- 12:41Pro Football Focus. I love the numbers that you guys
- 12:43put together and trying to figure out how to grade things,
- 12:46but by far the most difficult football people tell you is
- 12:49grading offensive line. Can you take us under the hood a
- 12:52little bit and explain how you guys over at Pro Football Focus
- 12:55do it? Because Ken knows, I mean, I
- 12:57bring up those numbers all the time because look, we watch
- 12:59football. You can tell a wide receivers
- 13:01doing his thing, a quarterbacks doing his thing, offensive line
- 13:04is difficult. How you guys grade things on the
- 13:06O line at Pro Football Focus? Yeah, it's difficult because of
- 13:10one, the camera angles and things that are harder to see on
- 13:13TV and, and two, the amount of context that goes into it and
- 13:16the amount that you have to really interpret each guy's
- 13:18assignment and the unit's assignment, whether that's a run
- 13:21concept and what they're trying to accomplish there or passing
- 13:24things off in pass protection. But you know what I can tell you
- 13:27is we go through everything twice, right?
- 13:28We have our live run when the game is going and then we do get
- 13:31the all 22 in and we and we rework a little bit of it, you
- 13:34know, once we get that in and we get the end zone shot.
- 13:37So really when you talk about having to integrate the context
- 13:40of of all five guys assignments up there on top of the
- 13:43dominance, right, if you're blowing guys 5-6 yards off the
- 13:46ball in the run game or if you're really keeping things
- 13:48clean and pass protection, then that all starts to work into it.
- 13:52So it does it takes in every snap approach to it.
- 13:55It takes a lot of detail and a lot of interpreting even, you
- 13:58know, the certain teams with different protection schemes and
- 14:00how they want to do things in the run game that it does take a
- 14:03lot. But we do go through it twice
- 14:05over every single game. Like, you know, the second time
- 14:08when we get the all 20, we get that end zone shot of every
- 14:10single place. So it's certainly a lot of fun.
- 14:13I, I did it for three years and, and there's certainly a lot that
- 14:16goes into it. It's it's honestly, it's my
- 14:18favorite thing that we do because I don't think anybody
- 14:20else has that sort of context in the trenches like.
- 14:22That no, we all rely on you to get our information before we
- 14:26regurgitate it. Last thing for me, let Trent
- 14:28finish up with the Dalton episode 1 tonight of Hard
- 14:31Knocks. Buffalo is in the spotlight this
- 14:34year. They're going to win the East.
- 14:35I don't know who's going to be who's going to finish second,
- 14:38third or fourth, but I'm I'm pretty sure that the Buffalo
- 14:40will prevail. Is this a Super Bowl team in
- 14:43your mind if they've done enough to finally, finally win a Super
- 14:47Bowl? Look, it's all about the
- 14:49defense. Look, Josh Allen is he's ready
- 14:52to win a Super Bowl. He's been fully ready to win a
- 14:54Super Bowl. He's undoubtedly one of the four
- 14:56best quarterbacks in football. But it's all about this defense,
- 14:58right? There's too many times in the
- 15:00postseason where they have given up too many points.
- 15:02They haven't made big stops in big moments.
- 15:05And I know people like to get on the quarterback in the and all
- 15:07of that, but their defense was the fifth lowest graded unit in
- 15:11our in our grading system last year, right?
- 15:13They just have Sean McDermott, Bobby Babbage in this defense
- 15:15have to be better in big moments.
- 15:17But I do like that they've attacked it this offseason. 5 of
- 15:20their first six draft picks were on the defensive side.
- 15:22A lot of their free agent signings were on the defensive
- 15:25side, especially the defensive line.
- 15:26So if they can improve and at least get to something average
- 15:30to above average on that side of the ball, then Josh Allen can
- 15:33carry them the rest of the way. That's what I'm looking for.
- 15:35You're right, they're the prohibitive favorite in the AFC
- 15:37East. But it's a matter of making
- 15:39stops when it matters in the postseason.
- 15:41I love PFF, makes us smarter football fans.
- 15:44We get to these preseason games. What should we be watching for
- 15:46just in general when we're watching this preseason games?
- 15:49By the time we get to the second-half, a lot of these guys
- 15:51are not going to be on any active rosters.
- 15:54How should a football fan watch pre season football?
- 15:57As long as your favorite team isn't involved.
- 15:59I think the most, the most important part for me at this
- 16:03point, the pre season is watching the young guys, the
- 16:05rookies that you do know. Lost them.
- 16:12Lost them. Watch the rookies.
- 16:18Yeah, watch the rookies. Don, if you can hear us, We lost
- 16:21you, so we appreciate what you do for us.
- 16:23Good stuff out of this. Good.
- 16:24Really good, isn't? He is, and he also does college.
- 16:27Stuff over. I know he does yeah.
- 16:29And and they've got a sale Pro Football focus on college that
- 16:32does Chris Collinsworth own this or has ownership in it or he did
- 16:36yes. Yes.
- 16:37I think they're based in Cincinnati, if memory serves.
- 16:40Oh, really? I think and that's what
- 16:42Collinsworth lives, right. I think so.
- 16:44Donald Wasserman lost, you guys, not sure what happened.
- 16:47We'll take a time out. We'll come back.
- 16:48Trent and I will. We've got a number of topics
- 16:51we're going to get to and we come back.
- 16:53Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 17:07Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 17:09Coming up on 1:30 on a Tuesday, Trent's Plays of the Day, Circus
- 17:13sports sponsor, those get to those in about 20 minutes or
- 17:16thereabouts. Did you have a winning day
- 17:19yesterday? I know you had.
- 17:21You had the Reds, you had the Blue Jays did you had.
- 17:26There was no WNBA. Nope, I ran the board 3 and O.
- 17:29That a boy I knew you were two and O.
- 17:31That's how we start off the week.
- 17:32What was my other one yesterday? How do we pull up the app here?
- 17:35We also had, oh, Houston, it was plus money against the Marlins
- 17:39and the Reds were plus money. They were had it all together.
- 17:42Even with that -200 with your Blue Jays plus 3.19 units.
- 17:47Well done. That's a winning day.
- 17:48Yeah. And.
- 17:49By by any any count, no doubt about that All right when totals
- 17:53in college football you want to take a look at the locals Yes,
- 17:56absolutely because I I'm just I'll tell you the one that's got
- 18:01me baffled. I think I was going over by the
- 18:02way that one to me was it came easy.
- 18:05Iowa State is confounding for a number of reasons.
- 18:09OK, I, I think they could be as good as eight and four, nine and
- 18:15three, or the ceiling falls out and they're six and six, five
- 18:18and seven. I think there's somewhere in
- 18:21there. Iowa, on the other hand, I just
- 18:22can't see Iowa crashing and burning.
- 18:24And I've changed because I could have back in the day.
- 18:27I'll be back earlier, you know, went after the season.
- 18:29In January we were this is going to be a struggle to get to say.
- 18:32Absolutely. And I think the country felt
- 18:34that way, but I but I don't feel that way anymore, Trent.
- 18:38I feel better about Iowa than I do about Iowa State's chances of
- 18:43having a nine and three type of year.
- 18:45Is the Iowa side, Is it just Gronowski or is that a big
- 18:50piece? I'm still not sold.
- 18:53I keep everything I keep hearing.
- 18:54Well, it's a, it's a Phil Parker defense.
- 18:56You know they're going to be good.
- 18:58Did You Know? 2014, they went young linebacker
- 19:02because of injuries and they sucked, right?
- 19:04They took a huge step back. Right.
- 19:06And that's a huge unknown this year.
- 19:08It is huge unknown. Secondary Phil Steele has them
- 19:13the number 8 in the country ranked defensive line.
- 19:17That happens. They'll be fine.
- 19:19They'll be. Fine.
- 19:19If they can get to that level we know they're pretty good at,
- 19:22they're set at special teams, we think.
- 19:25I keep hearing about the left tackle.
- 19:26They'll find somebody play that position.
- 19:28We know they can run the football.
- 19:29The wide receiver room is as deep, fair to say yes, as it's
- 19:33been in a long, long time. The question maybe, and it's
- 19:37never the question that I was a tight end, right?
- 19:40But I still think because Gronowski is going to be such an
- 19:42upgrade that that gives me utmost confidence that this team
- 19:46is going to, you know, not crash and burn, that you're not
- 19:49sitting here in November when you've got Michigan State,
- 19:52Nebraska next. The last two games, they have to
- 19:55win one to get the ball eligibility.
- 19:56I don't see that. That they're already have that
- 19:59hay. They'll have that hay in the
- 20:00barn and that means going to USC and that's not going to be easy.
- 20:04It never is going West. Their final four games, Oregon
- 20:09at USC, Michigan State, Nebraska.
- 20:12When we get to that point, coming off the Minnesota game at
- 20:15the end of October, are those games going to matter big
- 20:20picture for playoff? You mean like is there going to
- 20:23be a path? Well, if they win them all,
- 20:26they'll be fine. So you can see this team sitting
- 20:29going into that final stretch, they're six and two.
- 20:31Yes. And it's a bye week before that
- 20:34org and that's a conversation that we're having.
- 20:36Yeah, but but I want to stop everybody right now because I
- 20:38know people are going crazy. Miller's got him going to the
- 20:40no, I don't have him going to the playoffs.
- 20:42Your question was, is when we get to November, is it still a
- 20:46possibility? And yes, Trent, I see it as a
- 20:49possibility now. I don't see them winning enough
- 20:51games in November to make that a reality, but that's a
- 20:54conversation. Yes, if they run the table, yes,
- 20:59they will be a playoff team. The one game they're going to
- 21:04lose to Penn State, yes. I mean, I know that Kenny comes
- 21:08alive and we've seen it before with heavy heads come to town.
- 21:12There's no there's been no kick off time announced yet, correct.
- 21:15If it finds a way to be under the lights, you know that like
- 21:19Iowa a little bit better. I still don't like him enough.
- 21:22I think they could be unbeaten when they get to that point.
- 21:25Not a stretch. Because I have the winning
- 21:28Cyhawk. This year they go well, a place
- 21:30that they haven't lost since 2011.
- 21:32That's Jack Trice Stadium, as they continue to RIP off
- 21:35victories there in some incredible fashions throughout
- 21:39the time at Rutgers. Short week Kirk's been good at
- 21:42short weeks. He's been good on Fridays.
- 21:44Especially when he goes east. I got to see it from Indiana
- 21:47I'm. With you and we both like
- 21:49Mendoza, but I got to see it. And you got a road trip, but off
- 21:52a by at Wisconsin. Wisconsin might win 4, might win
- 21:57four games. And I I can absolutely buy that
- 22:00that they are 6 and O and that will set up a showdown at State
- 22:04College because Penn State before that, where's Penn State
- 22:06have well, they do have a game to get to Oregon.
- 22:09So but if they win that one, it's a Beaver.
- 22:13They also might be that's the white out.
- 22:15That's the white out. Yeah.
- 22:16I mean, we could be talking 6 and over six and O another top
- 22:19five matchup that will be compelling.
- 22:23I think I. Would start too far out of the
- 22:25top five to be a top five matchup, but at that point you
- 22:27never. Know never know, right what what
- 22:28could happen and it's going to be a big one.
- 22:31So we're laying out a case that November is really going to
- 22:34matter for. Us.
- 22:34Well, what do they do against Minnesota?
- 22:37They beat the Gulf. Yeah, I agree.
- 22:38Yeah. Are you buying P JS team?
- 22:41I'm buying that they're going to be better.
- 22:44But not They're fine. They're fine.
- 22:46As as much as I hate Phil Fleck because he's just, he's not my
- 22:49kind of person. He's a football coach.
- 22:52He's not the Tim Brewsters of the world.
- 22:55That was all it was, was the flash and there was no some.
- 22:58There is substance behind it. I don't like the way that he
- 23:00drives at it, but he is a football coach along with all
- 23:03the other crap that he throws out.
- 23:04There, I agree. I wish I will give him credit
- 23:06for that. I would too.
- 23:08I wish he'd put a a stocking cap on when it's November.
- 23:11I got to go for ball 10. I feel terrible.
- 23:13That's got to be tough for you to say.
- 23:15Look, I had their way up there with them last year.
- 23:18They had their way. I think they'll I think Hawks
- 23:20find a way to win a close game. So here we are back to November,
- 23:25and if we're right at that point, they would be 6 and 1,
- 23:29seven and one. Seven and one in that scenario,
- 23:32yeah. And then here comes Oregon and
- 23:34then they go to USC and then here comes Sparty on Senior Day
- 23:38before you go to Nebraska. And a lot of folks think that
- 23:41the how many times have we heard the year three met rule year and
- 23:44it's been true to this point. It is.
- 23:48I could see one and three in the month of November.
- 23:50That's not a stretch either. I think Aiden Childs is going to
- 23:54take a big step forward as Sparty's quarterback.
- 23:56This year, and if that happens and they finish eight and four
- 23:59after a 7 and one start, which I don't think is a huge stretch
- 24:02that that could play out in that fashion, November has normally
- 24:07been a strength. And Michigan State beaten pretty
- 24:08easy last year. They did, but that was by far
- 24:11the best offensive game that Michigan State had all year
- 24:13long. That's true.
- 24:14The defense looked inept. I did against Michigan State.
- 24:17I. Have all teams of all teams.
- 24:21If that happens, 8 and four a nice year.
- 24:24But it it won't feel great, will it?
- 24:25It'll feel too, because of the way that you're finished.
- 24:27What could It's the schedule. I mean, if you were, if you
- 24:31were, if you came out of nowhere to get to 8 and four by winning
- 24:34your last three out of your last four, Rutgers, Indiana,
- 24:36Wisconsin, Penn State, you feel better about that.
- 24:39Eight and four look shinier because it's here and now.
- 24:41I mean, you just flip it the other way and your final three
- 24:43games are Rutgers, Indiana, Wisconsin.
- 24:45There you go. It's different.
- 24:47It would feel a whole lot. There it's getting figuring it
- 24:50out November if we see it every year.
- 24:53No, not this year. The schedule is not, it's not
- 24:56conducive to that. So let's take a look at Iowa
- 24:58State because I think Iowa State is going to lose in Dublin.
- 25:03I think they beat South Dakota. And again, that's closer than it
- 25:06should be because of the coming back.
- 25:08I think they lose Seihawk, they win at Arkansas State and then,
- 25:13well, they get they they beat Arkansas State and then they
- 25:16continue their role in the Big 12.
- 25:18They'll beat Arizona, they'll win at Cincinnati, they'll win
- 25:21at Colorado. I don't understand the BYU love.
- 25:25They don't have a quarterback. Well, they got this guy that's
- 25:27like 5-7. Right I saw the pictures tiny
- 25:33little he's a little guy so it's at that point they've reeled off
- 25:37five straight wins if we're right here before Arizona State
- 25:40comes to town and that to me is a toss up I.
- 25:43Don't believe in Arizona State? I like Sam Levin.
- 25:45I do too, but he doesn't. Did you see?
- 25:50And they've got a bullseye on their backs.
- 25:52Did you see after practice the other day the way that
- 25:54Dillingham was calling out his team?
- 25:57Big time was he. I got to find the clip again
- 25:59because it was not just a you know, he didn't have a great
- 26:02pet. It was calling out his team.
- 26:04It reminded me of very much of the fat cats.
- 26:07Kirk Ferd's statement. He was calling out his guys for
- 26:11him big time way that though maybe fueling the fire a little
- 26:16bit more. Arizona State.
- 26:18That is not a place where you stack up.
- 26:21Lean Iowa State. Everybody loves TCU and Hoover,
- 26:24and you love Hoover. I love Hoover.
- 26:26That's a tough game. You might have to win that
- 26:2814240. OK, you can though.
- 26:30You know, again, here we go to here Kansas and here's the
- 26:34here's the algorithm that got me yesterday that this team is 7
- 26:37and O after they leave. No, they won't be, but I think
- 26:40they're going to be better. This is this has to be Daniel's
- 26:43last year. He's been there since before
- 26:44COVID and he's a good quarterback when he's healthy
- 26:49and Oklahoma State is awful. This will be Gundy's last game
- 26:53as the head coach of the Cowboys.
- 26:55So when you add it all up, they've got one win in their
- 27:00first 3, then 23456. Let's say they beat Arizona
- 27:05State 7, Oklahoma State 8 at TCU Kansas.
- 27:11Do you split to get the 9 or does or does Arizona State go
- 27:15against? You see, that's where I'm at.
- 27:17That's where I'm kind of. But you're well over, you're
- 27:19well, you're feeling confident on over with both teams.
- 27:23And when I look at Iowa State and I like and look at the
- 27:25schedule, I, I, I like them in the Kansas State game.
- 27:30I just looked again, we're going through and during the break I
- 27:34thought, what are the places? I think it might have been
- 27:36Fianduel on the money line. They're like plus 138.
- 27:40Iowa State is. Iowa State is against case.
- 27:42That's too much. That's a coin flip game plus
- 27:45138. Yeah, I'm going to invest.
- 27:47Maybe Matt Campbell's better at week 0 than he is at week one.
- 27:50That's. And last year, did they figure
- 27:52it out a year ago? We're hearing those positive
- 27:54trends that they feel like at least they have a path now of
- 27:57getting off to better starts to the season.
- 27:59I like them a lot more than you. Do.
- 28:01You like K State in that game? I like Iowa State in that first
- 28:04one. Now, I do have more concerns
- 28:06about that back-to-back road trip to Cincinnati and Colorado
- 28:09than I think you do. Which one of the two?
- 28:12Either one of the two, you know, it's just I put them in the same
- 28:15bucket and I think that's a split though they're better on
- 28:20paper than both those teams winning both of them on the
- 28:23road. That's where it becomes a little
- 28:25bit more difficult for me. So I got AL there.
- 28:28When it comes to Colorado, I just don't really think about
- 28:30the quarterback. Well, they brought two of them
- 28:32to Media days, yeah. I would brought none.
- 28:38OK, That's that's that's, that's not, that's not unfair because
- 28:41that's. Salter, right.
- 28:42Yes, Kaden Salter. Salter, Who?
- 28:44Huge numbers at Liberty. It was huge.
- 28:46And had them in what the Fiesta Bowl?
- 28:49Is that where they played Oregon two years ago?
- 28:51I think that's. What?
- 28:51It was not last year, No. Yeah.
- 28:53Two years ago he had he had liberty in the Fiesta Bowl.
- 28:56No different world, different environment, but still that's
- 28:59something that really truly happened.
- 29:01BYU huge step back. Arizona State, step back.
- 29:05TCU better. Kansas, They lost close games
- 29:09last year. Didn't go their way, but.
- 29:10Still, what did we start the show with?
- 29:12Oh yeah, that starts to even out a little bit more.
- 29:16They're over. Both teams are over.
- 29:18Both teams over. Optimism about reign supreme on
- 29:22August 5th, now come back August 15th.
- 29:26We might go the other way because that's also what starts
- 29:29to happen is you hear one thing, you get a report.
- 29:34This isn't going very well. Iowa hasn't found it.
- 29:37Left tackle, that defensive end position for Iowa State.
- 29:40Still, nobody's getting to the quarterback in practice.
- 29:42That's just that's a huge and we.
- 29:44Hear those little and then all of a sudden then you start
- 29:46talking the other way and I jump off the K state and you find a
- 29:50lawsuit either Colorado or Cincinnati and you know what
- 29:52Arizona State I think they are getting and you go back the
- 29:55other way and very quickly. On your 6:00 and 6:00. 6:00 and
- 29:586:00 when you're going to the Reliquest Bowl.
- 30:01We're back to Memphis. Whatever it is, hey, I found one
- 30:05other thing. Now this is offshore, but I
- 30:08thought this was interesting because the prop bet menu for
- 30:12the NFL is so overwhelming. It's crazy.
- 30:16The amount of things that you can bet on, including individual
- 30:19player props. So that's what this is,
- 30:21individual player props for the Big 10 and the Big 12 to lead
- 30:25the conference each of their conferences in passing yards,
- 30:29receiving yards and rushing yards.
- 30:32So the reason this popped into my head is I just want to see
- 30:35where the local guys were involved, right?
- 30:37So let's start with the Big 12. In a quarterback league that is
- 30:41so ridiculously. It's it's so it really is,
- 30:43Trent. It really is.
- 30:44Where in the Big 10, the SEC, there's so many question marks
- 30:47at that position and then you get to the Big 12.
- 30:51So a guy like Jalen Daniels, who we just talked about in terms of
- 30:56leading the conference and passing yards, he is like the
- 30:5810th betting choice. Really.
- 31:01Josh Hoover is the betting favorite.
- 31:02Plus 150. OK.
- 31:03Morton of Texas Tech 2 to one big drop.
- 31:07Where's Levitt? Six to one for Sawyer Robertson
- 31:11of Baylor. There is Rocco.
- 31:13He's 9 to one along with. So he's the fourth choice.
- 31:16Kaden Salter of Colorado, both of them, at 9:00 to 1:00.
- 31:20Then you get to Sam Levitt at 11 to 112 to one for Noah Fafida.
- 31:24Avery Johnson's 20 to one. Really.
- 31:27How about Jalen Daniels at 40 to 1?
- 31:30Brendan Sorsby of Cincinnati, who I kind of like, maybe have a
- 31:33little crush on him. He's 40 to 1 now.
- 31:37Devin Dampier's not going to throw for a lot of.
- 31:39Yard. No, he's going to run.
- 31:40For a lot of he absolutely is. He's 60 to 1 ego from there,
- 31:42which was eye opening. Here's another eye opening one.
- 31:46Let's go to receiving yard leader Jordan.
- 31:48Tyson's the betting favorite. As he should.
- 31:50Yes, he's a stunt. Your 4th betting choice is the
- 31:54guy that's never played in the Big 12, but he's the big
- 31:57receiver for Iowa State. Jay Sole is the 4th betting
- 32:00choice to lead the league in receiving yards.
- 32:04The betting markets are brewing with what we're hearing again is
- 32:07they found another one and we shouldn't be surprised, should
- 32:10we? No, I, I know.
- 32:11I just see, I, I think Bramer's going to lead the team in, in
- 32:14receiving yards this year. I think he's going to have a
- 32:16breakout year. Have you ever seen a tight end
- 32:19though in this offense do? We have but, but Brocco Becht
- 32:24had, he had two blankets, security blankets, right?
- 32:28Fine #3 find Jane Higgins. Those guys are found in Houston
- 32:33now. I don't know.
- 32:34That's 167 combined catches that are in the NFL.
- 32:39That's asking a lot. Maybe maybe he isn't, but
- 32:41they've done it continually. I know it's.
- 32:44It's after El Hazard left. They're not going to find
- 32:46another El Hazard. We, we played this game, four
- 32:48straight turnovers of that big receiver position and they find
- 32:52another guy every single team. Butler, yes, that's it.
- 32:55You're not going to replace him. I thought he'd play in the NFLI,
- 32:58really did. Rushing leaders Dylan Edwards
- 33:01and K State's the favorite but your fourth choice, the guy you
- 33:04mentioned earlier, Devin Dampier, the quarterback of
- 33:07Utah, he's 12:50 so these are kind of fun I just maybe a
- 33:11different way of kind of looking at each of the conferences let's
- 33:14jump over the big 10 let. Me stop you real quick.
- 33:16Do you think you talk and win the Big 12?
- 33:17Yes, I do too. Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:19I'm with you. I don't like the price I was.
- 33:22What is it? Because I've already.
- 33:23Plus 550, something like that. I bet it was somebody else.
- 33:26I put a couple of things together.
- 33:28Big 10 passing yard leaders. OK, this kind of shocked me, but
- 33:33it went back to the conversation.
- 33:34I just said where the Big 12 in the SEC has these question marks
- 33:37at quarterback. Jade Maeva is the favorite.
- 33:42Now he's playing for Lincoln Riley at USC.
- 33:44Speaking of bad luck in one score games, which been kind of
- 33:47our thesis throughout the course of today, they had awful luck a
- 33:52year ago. And think of that Maryland loss,
- 33:53the Minnesota loss. They just had some incredible
- 33:56ones A year. Penn State, Penn State beat
- 33:59anyway. Naeva -150 No thanks.
- 34:02Dante Moore is the second choice.
- 34:04You know I don't. You don't like him at all?
- 34:05Oregon's new QB. Julian Sayin is plus 650.
- 34:10There's Mendoza of Indiana. But Julian Sayin's got maybe the
- 34:13best receiver in college football.
- 34:15As I might have to throw up again, here's a bet that I would
- 34:18take Dylan Rayola at 12 to one. That's a great price Hogle for a
- 34:26full year, a wide receiver group that.
- 34:29Way better if. You is going to be a lot.
- 34:31Better they are. Now I wish maybe we could end
- 34:34this bet like through October, because I don't know how he's
- 34:37going to look come November, but.
- 34:40They have their open practice on Saturday.
- 34:42We should reach out to Sip and have him on.
- 34:44Thursday, 12 to one for Damon Williams.
- 34:47Like him of Washington. Aller's 14 to 1.
- 34:49Where's Underwood? Is he listed?
- 34:52Underwood. I think I saw him.
- 34:54Let me scroll through. No, they have Mikey Keane listed
- 35:01at 100 to one along with Mark Gronowski.
- 35:04That's where he's at A. 100 to 1 to lead the Big 10 in passing
- 35:07yards this season. Where's Joe Aller?
- 35:09What did you say? 14 to 1, check that.
- 35:12Yeah, 14 to 1. Altmire right behind him at 22
- 35:14to one Illinois QB. There was an Iowa receiver
- 35:18listed. It's Jacob Gill.
- 35:20He's like the 15th guy that is listed there.
- 35:23But this was maybe of all these surprises and I I think there's
- 35:27been a few eye opening ones. The biggest one rushing yardage
- 35:31leader in the Big 10 this season.
- 35:33Now, my behind first went to the Penn State guys, but there's
- 35:37two. Of them they should, yeah,
- 35:38they're split them. With Singleton and and
- 35:41Singleton, what's the other Kirk's name?
- 35:43Allen Catron Allen. But they're not because again,
- 35:47they're splitting it up. Darius Taylor in Minnesota, I
- 35:50like him a lot. He is the 6th betting choice.
- 35:54Your betting favorite is Kamari Moulton.
- 35:58Really Kamari? Based on last year's results,
- 36:01maybe he averaged what, 5.8 yards per carry?
- 36:04Obviously in a backup roll. Offensive line returns to All
- 36:07Americans. OK, 3 starters.
- 36:10Another guy that was the six offensive lineman Kamari Bolton,
- 36:137 to 1 batting favorite in the Big 10 rushing yardage.
- 36:19And you know, I mean, it's not crazy, I guess, right?
- 36:23Now here's the guy I love, Jonah Coleman, that big back for
- 36:25Washington. He's on.
- 36:27Yeah. He's he's alone.
- 36:29Christian Akoye reincarnated 40 years later.
- 36:32He is. And these are all offshores.
- 36:34These are offshore, but they're fun to look at and if you're so.
- 36:38Inclined. And where do you have the do you
- 36:40have the receiving numbers for the Big 10?
- 36:41Yeah. And and how big of a how short
- 36:43of a price is Jeremiah Smith? Let's see it here plus 350.
- 36:48That's a pretty good price. I'll Lemon of USC along with LZ,
- 36:52the two transfer receivers plus 859 to 1, Sarah of Indiana Moore
- 36:58of Oregon, another USC guy. Boy, they must be loaded.
- 37:02Tell me USC is going to win some games this year.
- 37:04I think USC is going to sneak up on some teams.
- 37:06I liked him a lot. They are.
- 37:07We'll take a time out Transplays of the day or next, Miller and
- 37:10Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 37:13Hi, Miller. Condon, welcome back.
- 37:14Final couple of minutes here on a Tuesday.
- 37:18Back to Rayola and your thoughts.
- 37:20Simple. Just tweeted this covers
- 37:22Nebraska. We'll have him on Thursday if
- 37:24his schedule allows. When it comes to wide receiver,
- 37:26he says depth is real and size and speed stand out.
- 37:31So we'll talk to Sip about the Huskers.
- 37:33They have that open practice and the media just loved him.
- 37:36Well, of course, of course they did.
- 37:37That's been the case for the last.
- 37:38Four my 60 your whole life, yeah.
- 37:40Let's They're fanboys. They're not real.
- 37:42They're not. Sip now.
- 37:43Come on. Yeah.
- 37:44He's kind of a fan. He's better than most.
- 37:48That's true. Where are you going baseball
- 37:51wise? WNBA, What are you doing?
- 37:53Both. We got two in the West and three
- 37:55in Major League Baseball. Let's start things off as Chris
- 37:59Paddock will face his former team, the Minnesota Twins.
- 38:02I do not believe in Zebby Matthews.
- 38:04I will lay the -141 with the Tigers tonight.
- 38:08Freddy Peralta slowing down a little bit.
- 38:12You look at his range over his last, I think 5 starts has not
- 38:15been great. On the other side it is Wentz
- 38:19for Atlanta. Not great in his own right.
- 38:20Going to grab the plus money here plus 1/27 just to feel that
- 38:24the Brewers finally slowed down. Give me Tampa, it's Peepo.
- 38:27That means I'm bored with Tampa plus 112 against the Angels.
- 38:31Two at the West. I'm going to lay the 1 1/2 with
- 38:33Seattle tonight as Minnesota comes to town and the straight
- 38:37comes to an end. Fever.
- 38:38Lose Gibby LA on the money line plus. 115 Lucas String comes off
- 38:46the bench with David Eichelt, their next Miller and Condon
- 38:49with you every Monday through Friday, noon to two Iowa Sports
- 38:52Radio Network.
